‘Development from hell’ By NICK KRAUSE

eighbours are at the end of their tether after a year of torment living next to a building site on Union Road in Howick. Two neighbours say they have had a gutsful of the excessive noise coming from the site outside of the development’s hours of consent. They’re also extremely unhappy with heavy vehicles frequently blocking their driveways. One woman, who asked not to be named, is so incensed she is moving out of her flat next door and she claims her neighbour moved out six weeks ago and another across the road from the site “sold and moved because of this”.
“We knew they were building – it’s just extreme,” she said. The site at 133 Union Road has four double-storey garage townhouses. “Over the past year there have been a series of events at site 133, first the removal of the original homestead that was halted on a o public holiday (Waitangi Day 2019) as the contractors had no legal paperwork…consent to remove it from the site,” the woman said. “There have been a number of police, council and WorkSafe interventions associated with the developer and his contractors, builders over the past 12 months. “The building (work) is no longer tolerable to myself and some sur-

rounding neighbours. It’s a development from hell.” The main gripe is contractors continually working outside of consented start and finish times as well as on Sundays and public holidays, again, breaching their consent regulations. The parking issue and a broken fence containing asbestos have tipped neighbours over the edge. “We have voiced valid concerns in regards to the times in which the builders are working and this has resulted in complaints to council and noise control,” she said. “Who needs that after work and at the weekends? I’m moving out. I’ve had enough.” George Vaculik-Hamilton lives across the road. “I’m staying put
because I like the place,” he said. “I’m extremely p*ssed off with the situation. Every single contractor has breached consents. There have been 13 incidents at that site over a year now.” Vaculik-Hamilton claims he was also assaulted. “I was punched and pushed. I basically asked them to stop working on public holiday,” he said. “Cops have refused to do anything. The first time I had cops come, it was a response when I forced a reaction from the authorities. “Council have been no help. One owman has come out.” He praised WorkSafe though who have shut the site down six times, he said.
He is also concerned with parking and traffic flow once building is complete, exacerbating an already busy piece of road with a neighbouring rest home. “I’ve had to calm down two other neighbours,” he said. “I wanted to sabotage the site to try to stop work. Bugger off and leave us in peace.” Police told the Times it is a civil matter. “We are not immediately aware of an incident or report based off of that information,” a spokeperson said. “The issues appear to be of a civil matter and, as such, any consent breaches should be directed to council.” ➤➤Continues on Page 3
Café News Maree Keane of Foodco tells us that Muffin Break, one of New Zealand’s most loved cafés, is returning to the area later this year. Loyal customers were devastated when the Botany café closed recently but residents will be delighted when they hear that Muffin Break is under construction at the Ormiston Town Centre. There’s an opportunity to join them as Maree is searching for an ambitious local to become the Muffin Break Franchisee at the centre of this community.

➤➤From Page 1 Auckland Council also responded. Max Wilde, Team Manager Compliance Response, said: “The complaints we have received for this property are all in relation to construction noise complaints. A few have been during the day and our policy with noise complaints during the day is that we don’t attend on the first call, but if the noise continues after 30 minutes and the customer calls back, then an officer will be asked to attend. The customer/s did not call back for any of the complaints made during the day and so our officers did not attend the site on these occasions. All other jobs showing on the system for 133 Union Street were attended and outcomes were no noise or not excessive according
to the Auckland Council Unitary Plan noise levels or section 16 of the RMA.” In section E25.6.27 of the Auckland Council Unitary Plan (AUP), it lists the level of noise allowed at different time periods during the day. “When the noise is outside of these timeframes and noise limits, and instruction from our officers to reduce the noise is ignored, then this can result in either an excessive noise direction or an abatement notice being issued and enforcement action being taken,” said Wilde. “A $500 infringement fine can be incurred for the issue of a noncompliance notice or the noise makers can be prosecuted and be liable upon summary conviction to a further fine of up to $10,000. “We understand the frustration
with neighbours making “excessive” or “unreasonable” noise, and we can be called on 09 301 0101 to respond and take action when required.” Developer Ross Wang of Tang Investments said he knew some people were unhappy with noise levels. “We’ve tried our best not to bring any trouble to the neighbours. Some people are sensitive to any noise - sometimes neighbours are a little bit too sensitive,” said Wang. “We tried our best to follow council rules. Some suppliers would do deliveries outside of council hours.” But he said it seldom happens. “The neighbours have their rights, We fully understand that. We’re doing our best.” The project is expected to be finished in two to three months.
All on for Euro classic car show
S
helly Park local Bruce Cooper used to drive tanks in the South African Army. His love of all things mechanical has continued over the years, and he has amassed quite the collection of vintage cars, functioning model steam trains, and remote-controlled boats. His garage is a engineer’s dream, adorned with classic motorcycles, and working-on projects. The upcoming Brit-Euro Classic Car Show (March 1st), will be Bruce’s 5th appearance, he will be bringing his prized 1925 Austin Clifton. The Clifton has had eight owners over the past 95 years, and Bruce has rebuilt the engine. He acquired it after childhood memories of Gumdrop, a series of children’s books penned by Val Biro which featured a similar
model which went on adventures. Amusingly, “Gumdrop” is an example on onomatopoeia representing the sound made by the Austin starting up. The Times was lucky enough to be given a ride in the grand old lady, which chugged it’s way down to Cockle bay Beach, and attracted curious looks from bystanders. Bruce says “he gets used to the attention of people seeing something from yesteryear” making its way around the quiet streets of Shelly Park. He has even taken it as far as Northland, aided by its recommended cruising speed of 80km per hour. The Brit-Euro classic Car Show is a free event, held annually at Lloyd Elsmore Park, and this year a record 1140 classic cars and motorcycles have signed up, pushing the show to capacity.

Sweet, sweet music The sun was out and the crowd arrived to enjoy an afternoon of Kiwi music at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Sunday. The star-studded programme opened with AutoMatic 80s followed by Jason Kerrison and Anika Moa who had the crowd singing and dancing to wellknown songs. It was fun and the line-up of Kiwi artists certainly didn’t disappoint with singalong
hits. The final band The Feelers treated the crowd to some of their fabulous back catalogue of NZ rock anthems. Lloyd Elsmore Park rocked and even the vicious wind could not dampen the enthusiasm of the fans. Times photographer Wayne Martin was there to cover the Music in the Park event which is part of the Howick Local Board’s events.

Many residents in Whitford, Beachlands, Maraetai and Clevedon are feeling the effects of the drought and some have run out of water or are perilously close. The heavy rain on Saturday failed to put much water in tanks. The problem is exacerbated as water suppliers have become overwhelmed by demand with waiting times of up to five weeks. On Friday the PlaceMakers Pakuranga branch invited drought-affected residents to take water with a maximum limit of 1000 litres. Fifth Annual Auckland Brit & Euro Car Show coming up! Sunday March 1 will be the fifth annual Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car with special festivities to mark the occasion. The public are invited to Pakuranga’s Lloyd Elsmore Park from 10am to 3pm. Following a small Jaguar car display at East Auckland’s Lloyd Elsmore Park in December 2014, Rev Dr Richard Waugh (chairman of the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show Committee) and Laurie Hayward worked with other volunteers to organise the first classic car show event in March 2016. At the inaugural event 440 cars were displayed with several thousand of the public attending. Howick Local Board’s sponsorship was very important to help launch the event. For the 2020 event 1140 classic cars and motorcycles are expected. For the first time the car show will not conflict with

the large Round-the-Bays event and a record crowd of more than 10,000 people are expected to attend the British and European themed classic car show event, adjacent to the Howick Historical Village. The car show committee,
which includes representatives from five car clubs (Citroen, Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, MG and Mini) has made good progress working with over 120 volunteers and many local organisations including Howick Local Board, East FM, Howick Historical
Village, Rotary Clubs of East Auckland, Howick Menzshed, local Scout and Venturer groups, LifeGrowth Community Trust, Pakuranga United Rugby Club and Howick Tourism. With the likely biggest turn-out yet, careful organisation is required to manage the large number of vehicles and public expected. The car show continues its unique distinctives being themed for British and European cars (and motorcycles), noncompetitive, and free to participants and public alike. It is now considered to be one of the largest classic car shows in New Zealand and possibly the largest free classic car show in the Southern Hemisphere. The show also features a range of special food and East FM are renowned for their musical repertoire of British, German, French and Italian music. The 2020 event will have new
features including a story circle of interesting cars, some classic racing cars, microcars and more cars from Auckland’s vintage car clubs. Alvis is a marque that will be celebrating its 100th anniversary, with a special display, including Clive Butler of Dannemora’s recent restoration work on a New Zealand-new rare 1952 model. In recent years enthusiasts and their cars have been attending from outside Auckland including from Northland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty. Last year, one car travelled from as far as Timaru! It would seem the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show at Lloyd Elsmore Park is becoming New Zealand’s main British & European car event. n For more information go to: www.briteurocarshow.nz. I notice dredging has started at Half Moon Bay. Is this dredged material being dumped at sea (which is an old antiquated process that destroys all sea life)? If yes, I suggest that an embargo is put
on that by council immediately. Our harbour has been heavily damaged by silting over many years and it should be stopped. If they can afford to make a marina, then they can afford to dump it on land.

Call for council water rates relief?
In the Times (February 11) you led with a story about the plight of Beachlands residents who have run out of water and have to purchase at around $22 per 1000 litres, about 15 times as much as Watercare charge when piped to your home at $1.55. To add insult to injury, residents are still having to pay for waste water charges at the Auckland average unless they wish to pay for their own water meter (only sourced from Watercare of course) and have to pay $15 a month for it to be read, while they do not charge for town supply households. And did the rapidly-growing Beachlands area residents have a choice on tank vs town supply... apparently not, it seems that the council surveyed the existing residents before the major expansion began and they said they wanted to stay off town supply.... so the council said OK and then allowed the subdivision. In my humble opinion the council needs to take a look at itself and decide what is really fair rather than just convenient. Come on councillors. Do your job and give these Beachlands residents some water rates relief at least!.

Ghost house insanity
It can be shown statistically that the number of ghost (empty) houses (Auckland alone having more than 33,000) being the tip of the iceberg. Across all of New Zealand the figure would be close to 100,000 which comes perilously close to the shortfall of houses that the government is now trying so desperately to fill which is testimony to the head-in-the-sand approach by the ministers of housing from the moment when the floodgates to immigration began in 2009 and which has escalated ever since. If the avaricious frenzy by wealthy New Zealanders, wealthy new immigrants and foreign investors sensing the resulting housing bubble and consequent opportunity to landbank houses for significant capital gain had been nipped in the bud back then, there would be no shortage of housing in New Zealand today. London, with a population of 8.9 million, has 60,000 ghost houses which in relative terms means Auckland has three times the number of ghost houses than London. London’s mayor Sadiq Khan who has a law degree and an attorney as a background (he’s no fool) describes London’s 60,000 ghost house scenario with so many people desperate for houses is insane so I wonder how Auckland’s mayor Phil Goff views Auckland’s current ghost house situation.

Bumblebees decline
The world is of the opinion that the loss/decline of bee numbers is driven by climate chaos. Perhaps we need to open our minds a little to look beyond the climate. The climate has run its course since the beginning of the world and I presume the bee, whether it’s the bumblebee or otherwise, would have the innate resources to adapt to the climate. Could it be the toxic pesticides, herbicides, insecticides as well as the genetically modified produce that’s causing the deaths of

To fight the epidemic we cannot afford to have Taiwan left out again. In November 2002, the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), originating in southern China, recorded 8098 cases and claimed 774 lives worldwide, including 73 deaths in Taiwan, the third highest toll next to mainland China and Hong Kong. When SARS broke out, due to international politics involving China, Taiwan was deprived of direct access to firsthand medical information and got no medical assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO). Taiwan had to fight the disease alone. It is fair to say that if WHO had have been put politics aside in face of the threat of SARS, many Taiwanese could have been saved. Needless to say, when WHO chose to leave Taiwan out of the global network, it created a loophole in containing the spread of virus and posed a grave threat to the health for all. Taiwan is located at a strategic node as well as a flight hub where northeast Asia meets Southeast Asia. As people and goods are constantly entering and leaving Taiwan. Before the outbreak of coronavirus, there are nearly 600 direct flights per week between Taiwan and China. Even though Taiwan adopted all necessary precautions at the onset of the outbreak of coronavirus, there are still 18 recorded cases. When people are now reflecting on what lessons we can learn from the previous SARS tragedy, to redress the mistake of putting Taiwan on the sidelines should be one of them. Some may argue that Taiwan has been represented by China in WHO. However, the simple reality is that Taiwan is never part of the PRC. Taiwan is not under China’s jurisdiction. Taiwan’s health and China’s are administered by separate and independent authorities. Diseases do not discriminate, nor do they know national boundaries. Coronavirus, SARS and measles are just few of the many vivid examples. If the motto of the WHO is “health for all” and “leaving no one behind,” I regret to point out that the 23m Taiwanese people
bees and the decline of bee numbers? These are all man-made products that have not been tried and tested for hundreds of years before they are put on the market for money and the poor insects, not just bees haven’t had the time to get used to them. Across my neighbour’s fence is a row of plants – no sprays of any sort – and the hum of the bees are a joy to my ears. In my own backyard, again, no sprays of any sort, where some pumpkins have appeared, as well as the clover and dandelion flowers on the lawn. The bees are a very welcomed sight. Oh yes, the bees are very vital to human survival and without them the possibility of pollination and food supplies faces a bleak future. Toxins or climate change? You decide.
are certainly not treated that way. It is undeniable that the exclusion of Taiwan from WHO creates dangerous loopholes in global disease prevention system. To combat the coronavirus epidemic (COVID-19), we cannot afford to leave Taiwan left out again.

Transforming patient’s journey at one-stop-shop diagnostic service `We see you clearly’ is a catchphrase that sits well with Mercy Radiology, one of the leading providers of advanced diagnostic imaging and treatment services in New Zealand with sites across Auckland. It is easy to see that CEO of Mercy Radiology and Clinics and head of Digital Health for Healthcare Holdings Ltd, Dr Lloyd McCann is passionate about digital health and using these approaches to improve patient experience and outcomes. Sensitive to patient’s needs, the young and driven CEO of Mercy Radiology is clearly working towards bringing cutting-edge technology, professional expertise and a human touch, to providing one-stop diagnostic and treatment imaging solutions. With many firsts to its credit, one of the areas Mercy Radiology has led the way in is nuclear medicine imaging with Auckland’s first dedicated state-of-the-art PET-CT facility. “Before we introduced PET, people jumped on a plane to Australia if they had to have a PETCT scan,” says McCann of the PET-CT facility. McCann takes pride in the spectrum of diagnostic and treatment services Mercy Radiology offers that includes the most advanced MRI and CT technologies. The first in Australasia, Siemens Lumina 3Tesla MRI scanner and new Siemens Go TOP CT scanner at the Mercy Radiology Botany Rd branch accompanied by the ultrasound, mammography, interventional radiology, CT and X-ray services, practically caters to all imaging needs. The good news is that faster diag-
nosis results in faster treatment and better patient outcomes. McCann, who used to work in Emergency Medicine, who also used his clinical experience in start-ups, leadership and consultancy roles in the health sector says, “By combining high tech with high touch, we aim to ensure that people get the right information to inform the treatment journeys.” Citing the example of Tomosynthesis at Mercy Radiology, Botany he explains that it gives a highly detailed three-dimensional view of breast tissue enhancing the traditional two-dimensional views captured using mammography. “Tomosynthesis gives us a better chance to detect small abnormalities, offering the opportunity for earlier diagnosis and in some cases, less invasive forms of treatment. This has the ability to improve outcomes. “We take our role as a diagnostic and treatment partner in the delivery of care, very seriously,” he says of Mercy Radiology. “Our Botany branch is the only full-service radiology location in South East Auckland.” Talking about the “awesome team” at Mercy Radiology that is constantly striving to put “patients first”, he points to the easy access they provide for patients by partnering with urgent care and GP clinics. “At our Botany branch, everything you need is there,
with all modalities in one place next to your doctor,” he points out. The one-stop-shop with integrated models of care where advanced imaging, diagnosis and treatment planning happens in just one visit, saves on waiting time, energy and unnecessary worry.
Mercy Radiology’s focus on consumer and patient needs has meant they have become the first radiology provider in New Zealand to offer online bookings for scans. “We’ve also got a series of patient videos detailing what you can expect from your scan or procedure which proved popular with our patients available on our website,” he explains. “People are ultimately at the heart of everything we do,” McCann says as he talks of the team of radiographers, sonographers, radiologists and administrators committed to providing the best clinical service and diagnosis as well as the highest standard of patient support. Constantly introducing new models of care and services to improve outcomes, Mercy Radiology has also introduced game-changers in prostate imaging and treatment to New Zealand. McCann talks of the PSMA PET Scans and Theranostics Programme their Medical Director Dr Remy Lim introduced to New Zealand. Theranostics is a late-stage treatment for men with advanced prostate cancer aimed at improving quality of life. “We’ve seen some great results,” he says. Mercy Radiology part of the Healthcare Holdings Limited (which includes Mercy Ascot Hospitals, Kensington Hospital, Auckland Radiation Oncology and other healthcare organisations) is future-focussed and will continue to focus on the needs of consumers and patients to improve their experience and outcomes. 0800 497 297

T
he cancer treatments of tomorrow are being studied today by two young scientists who have each received one of the country’s most prestigious awards, a Rutherford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr Emma Davison and Dr Lisa Pilkington from the University of Auckland’s School of Chemical Sciences are at the forefront of cancer therapy development. Dr Davison’s work is in one of the breakthrough areas in cancer treatment; immunotherapy. Immunotherapy works by using the bodies’ white blood cells to recognise cancer cells so that the patient’s own immune system can seek out and destroy them. But the immune system is not very good at doing this by itself and needs to be stimulated using vaccines. In the most advanced area of cancer immunotherapy, these vaccines can be personalised so that the patient’s immune system is instructed to kill a specific type of cancer but currently they take on average 3-4 months to design and manufacture. “That’s far too long for a newly diagnosed patient to wait for treatment,” Dr Davison says. “We need to
dramatically speed up the process so that eventually, the patient can receive their personal cancer therapy on the same day as their diagnosis.” She is working to achieve this using what scientists call automated flow synthesis, another leading discovery in chemistry whereby chemical compounds are joined together in a continuous stream which is many times faster than traditional ‘stopstart’ methods. Traditional methods of making vaccines involve a lot of trial and error in the laboratory so they not only take a long time but are extremely labour intensive. Dr Davison’s work with automated flow synthesis will not only produce vaccines faster - in a few hours - but will also be cheaper, reduce chemical waste, and is able to incorporate computers and robotics. “Automated flow synthesis is a very exciting area of chemistry and I believe it has huge potential in the future to help with the rapid discovery and delivery of new drugs,” Dr Davison says. “I’m incredibly grateful to be given the opportunity through a Rutherford Fellowship to focus on this

research.” Dr Pilkington’s work is also in medicinal chemistry but at the forefront of new drug discovery. She is utilising some of the newest statistical technologies to increase the efficiency of one of the key processes in drug development, creating a quantitative structure-activity relationship or QSAR. A QSAR is the relationship between the structure of a chemical compound and its biological activity and is essentially a representation of the way chemical compounds interact with living matter. Understanding a QSAR and using it to optimise biological activity of a
chemical compound is at the core of developing new drugs that have the desired effect in humans. Using machine learning techniques and R, a statistical software programme first developed at the University of Auckland, Dr Pilkington’s work will incorporate features into the QSAR process that haven’t been applied to the problem before and which should help make drug discovery much more efficient, saving both time and money. This could mean that new drugs are discovered and get to patients far faster that they currently do. “The new methodology will create a new tool to bring
about a paradigm shift in the way medicinal chemistry researchers do their work and I find that really exciting and challenging,” she says. “I am extremely honoured to be awarded this Rutherford Fellowship and am very determined to make the most of this fantastic opportunity. I am delighted to be given the means to work on this research, it feels like such a privilege.” Rutherford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships provide up to $170,000 over two years to allow researchers to do full-time research and are administered by the New Zealand Royal Society Te Aparangi.

BOTANY HEARS IT FIRST!
Local audiologist celebrates Grand Opening in New Zealand first

Botany leads a revolution as research reveals four in five Kiwis concerned about hearing On Thursday 20th March local audiologist, Columba Park, celebrated the opening of her new business in Botany, the very first Specsavers Audiology in the country. The opening came as research revealed that an estimated 1.9 million New Zealanders (83%) over the age of 40 have felt concerned about their own hearing, yet three in five (60%) of these people in Auckland have put their hearing at risk by not seeing a medical professional. Columba, who has worked in the industry for nearly ten years, commented; “I am thrilled to be joining the team at Specsavers Botany to offer my audiology services to the local community and help even more people to find affordable options for their hearing loss. It is extremely rewarding to become a part of a patient’s journey and see a change in their lives. “Our research shows that there are lots of people in the community who are concerned about their hearing but so many who have not done anything about it. “If left untreated, hearing loss can have a devastating impact on a person’s life, leading to mental fatigue and sometimes even depression. “Studies have also shown that in older people hearing loss adversely affects cognitive performance and can increase the risk of dementia.” The research also showed that less than half (43%) of Aucklanders over the age of 40 have had their hearing tested in
Audiologist Columba Park celebrates opening with Specsavers Country Director Brendan Thompson, Audiology Manager NZ Paul Rolfe, and local resident Brian Williams. Photos supplied the last three years, the timeframe recommended by audiology professionals. Local Howick resident, Brian Williams, is one of the many people who will benefit from Columba’s new business. Speaking about his hearing, Brian said, “I’ve been having trouble with loss for a few years now, but I’ve been ignoring the fact that it’s been getting worse – I’ve probably been in denial about it. “My wife has been encouraging me to have a test done and she’s pretty sure I need hearing aids as I have the TV up quite high and have trouble hearing her. I don’t know what I’m missing out on really, so hopefully it’ll make a big difference if I
Health, ACC or Veterans’ Affairs and Columba, who is a fully qualified audiologist, can offer assistance with the process of applying. Columba finished; “My advice to anyone is to come for regular checks over 40, but to see your local audiologist if you notice any changes at any time. The earlier we detect loss, the more we can do to help.” Data from YouGov study prepared for Specsavers, November/December 2019. The study was comprised of a nationally representative samples of 1,008 New Zealanders aged 40 years and older.
need hearing aids.” Specsavers’ Executive Director of Audiology, Darrel Magna, says the new offering is giving New Zealanders a more accessible solution to hearing loss by providing clear, low prices and the expert service that the team at Botany has become well-known for. Specsavers Botany is taking bookings for free 15-minute hearing checks. If further testing is required, comprehensive hearing assessments are being offered for $59. aping regulation that balances helping cigarette smokers quit while not encouraging new users, will be introduced to Parliament today, Associate Health Minister Jenny Salesa said. “The Bill aims to strike the right balance between making sure vaping is available for smokers who want to use it as a quit tool for cigarettes while ensuring vaping products are not marketed or sold to children and young people,” Salesa said.
The new law will:
■■ ban the sale of vaping products to under-18-yearolds ■■ prohibit advertising of vaping products and smokeless tobacco ■■ restrict the sale of flavoured vaping products and e-cigarettes to R-18 specialty stores ■■ limit general retailers, including dairies and service stations, to only sell three flavours ■■ introduce a product safety system – which enables the Ministry of health to recall, suspend and issue warnings about vaping products “This is a considered
approach that responds to many of the concerns regarding vaping,” Salesa said. “Our Government has heard from a large number of smokers who say vaping is helpful for them to able to quit cancer-causing cigarettes. “However we have also heard from parents, teachers and principals who want to make sure vaping companies are stopped from marketing to kids. “I am proud our Government is introducing a Bill that helps New Zealand achieve our Smokefree 2025 Goal by giving smokers choices in how they give up, but that it also discourages our kids from taking vaping up if they’ve never smoked before.” The Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products (Vaping) Amendment Bill will be introduced to Parliament on Monday, 24 February. It will receive its first reading in March when the Bill will then be referred to the Health Select Committee. “The Government is keen to hear from New Zealanders about where they think the

harmac has reached a provisional agreement with medicine supplier Pfizer to fund palbociclib (marketed as Ibrance) for firstline and second-line treatment of certain types of breast cancer. Consultation has gone out to health professionals and is available on their website for anyone wanting to have their say about the proposal to fund Ibrance. “Consultation is a very important step in our process. It’s how we check that what we are proposing can be implemented by the health sector and that the people who will get the most benefit from the medicines will be able to access them, says Pharmac’s chief executive Sarah Fitt. If the feedback from the consultation is positive, and the proposal is approved by the Pharmac Board, then patients could be prescribed Ibrance from April this year.

It is estimated that over 2000 New Zealanders will be eligible for the first and second line treatment in the first year of funding, and up to 950 New Zealanders eligible over each subsequent year. Our clinical experts have told us that these types of medicines (CDK4/CDK6 inhibitors) can stop or slow down the progression of the cancer, giving people more time to spend with their loved ones. “We are here to make more medicines available for more New Zealanders,” says Ms Fitt. “We do this by negotiating with medicine suppliers and running competitive pricing processes. In this instance we ran a request for proposal process and Pfizer offered the most competitive package. To date, Pharmac has approved the funding of 9 new medicines and widened access for 26 medicines in this financial year starting 1 July 2019.

Celebrating fun Children’s Day Expo at St Columba By FARIDA MASTER

id you know that there are more than 2500 social service providers in Auckland? Yet there are so many vulnerable people who are disenfranchised and don’t get linked, says Reverend Chris Barnard, minister at St Columba Presbyterian Church, Botany. A former Minister of Religion at Whakatane Presbyterian Church, Rev Barnard moved to east Auckland eight months ago and is excited about hosting a Children’s Day Expo and Fun Fest on Saturday March 7, a community focussed event that serves not just Christians but the community at large. “There will be an abundance of fun and food, carnival rides and performances by dance groups. We want to invite families from all walks of life from Howick and the wider Manukau area,” he says. Passionate about reaching out to the wider community, the main aim of the community event is to celebrate children and focus on their wellbeing. “We particularly want to focus on the vulnerability of all children in our area. Statistics show that many of our children are just

surviving instead of thriving,” says Rev Barnard, also a former headmaster and founder of a college in South Africa. “There are many social service providers and agencies in Auckland eagerly wanting to help families and children to thrive, however many of our whanau and children are living on the margins because they don’t know how or where to access help and support in hard times.”
This is not just about those living under the breadline but for the growing young New Zealanders battling with psychological distress, says Rev Barnard. The aim of the Children’s Day Expo and Fun Fest is to connect people with social service providers so that those with the right skills and resources can help make life better for children and families. The event invites Social Service Providers and agencies to come and display their services, skills and resources. “We have designed a treasure hunt which will encourage ever family/child to connect and engage with every stall holder. Each service provider will be given tokens which can be handed to the child/family once the social service provider is satisfied that they had made their service adequately known to the enquirer,” says Rev Barnard. Children with the required number of tokens will qualify to register their name in the draw to win a prize. try, 10 out of 16 regions saw annual increases in the number of properties sold, with particularly strong uplifts in sales volumes in most of the middle of the North Island and the top of the South Island,” Norwell said. “Sales in Auckland were the highest for the month of January in four years, with particularly strong uplifts in sales volumes in North Shore City (+29.0 per cent), Waitakere City (+28.6 per cent) and Rodney District (+21.1 per cent).” ADVERTORIAL CP2546A

here is no time like now to touch up the exterior and the interior of your home. Before autumn sets in, a fresh coat of paint with some tender loving care, will add to your home value and appeal. As the to-do list around the home builds up, refreshing the interior and exterior becomes a top priority. Naturally, a fresh coat of paint is often the way to go. But with summer being the prime time for recreation, homeowners who prefer to enjoy their spare time relaxing, may be better off leaving their painting jobs to the experts from East Auckland Painting Ltd. Greg Mustill employs an experienced team whose skill and knowledge are second to none. They offer a diverse painting service ranging from simple repaints of single rooms through to full interior or exterior work including doors, windowsills, surfeits and roofs. “In today’s working family scenario it so easy to let maintenance slide,” says Greg. “Unfortunately, when paintwork deteriorates it can downgrade the value of a home, and if you’re thinking of selling it’s a turn-off to buyers. “Peeling or grubby paint can make people wonder if there are bigger maintenance issues at stake. Also it is much more effective to keep on top of small jobs than put off maintenance until sud-

denly one is confronted by a big and costly bill to put things right.” Greg says now is the ideal time for painting houses, fences, garages and other buildings. “We tackle every job, no matter how big or small, with the same thorough professionalism, starting with proper surface preparation and undercoating then carrying through to the final topcoat and finish. Importantly, we don’t keep our customers waiting.” As an added bonus for customers, East Auckland Painting Ltd has a great all-year round special and is offering FREE pre-paint washing with all exterior repaints (conditions apply). “In fact, now’s a good time to plan ahead and take advantage of this special,” says Greg. And, as always before painting, Greg consults thoroughly with clients as to colour, the type of paint most suited to the job and the number of coats required. “We use all major paint brands,
such as Wattyl, Dulux and Resene, and work with oil and water-based paints. We also advise on the correct sheen to use as this can make a big difference in high traffic areas, wet rooms, or where exterior walls are exposed to the worst of the elements.” All East Auckland Painting Ltd., clients’ receive an on-site consultation and FREE, written, noobligation quote so there are no surprises. A fastidious tradesman, Greg is proud of his team’s reputation for working efficiently and leaving everything clean and tidy at the end of the day. “Whether we are painting a ceiling, refreshing interior rooms or tackling a full exterior repaint, we take pride in our workmanship.” To give your house a facelift with a fresh coat of paint, call Greg at: East Auckland Painting Ltd, P: 536-4356 M: 027- 619 2619 E: eastaucklandpainting@xtra.co.nz

Howick’s last Fencible passed away in 1902 As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017.
C
orporal Thomas Heath died in January 1902 aged 87 and was buried in All Saints Anglican cemetery with full military honours. Thomas came from Trowbridge, Wiltshire in England. He joined the Royal Marines as a young man but was wounded fighting in Syria for which he received a Silver Medal and was discharged when only 27-years-old. Only six soldiers per regiment of 100 men were allowed to marry while on service. When they were discharged, they looked for a wife. Thomas married Jane aged 22 years six months before sailing to New Zealand. His pension for military service was five pence a day for life which was a paltry income. The Fencible soldiers and fami-
lies on the Sir George Seymour sailed from London in August 1847. Thomas suffered from dysentery and the ship’s doctor gave him small doses of turpentine with opium with good results. Sailing down the coast of Africa, a well-armed pirate ship circled the Sir George Seymour, forcing the captain to order all women and children below decks and soldiers in uniform to parade on deck. The pirates demanded, “what are you carrying and to where?” After three days the pirates gave up and sailed away. The Sir George Seymour’s captain was greatly relieved as in the ship’s hold he had wooden crates of gold sovereigns and half sovereigns for 700 soldier’s pensions over their
ANNIVERSARY seven-year term of service in Auckland. Thomas, Jane and other passengers were trans-shipped from Auckland to Waipaparoa-Howick Beach on December 16,1847 where local Maori helped build raupo whares until the Government built their wooden cottages. Corporal Thomas Heath and his wife Jane lived in Wellington Street

and soon had seven children. After Sergeant Patrick Pearce died, they moved in 1861 into his larger cottage in Nelson Street. Thomas was able to buy five acres in Gills Road, Pakuranga, for 10 guineas [just over $20] and grazed six head of cattle. Making butter was a good income in the early years. Later potatoes and cabbages were profitable crops. Thomas Heath was one of the younger Fencible soldiers and worked as a labourer for Anglican Reverend Vicesimus Lush on his Cockle Bay farm where he dug ditches for drainage and boundary fences, as well as harvesting wheat and oats. His youngest daughter Sarah Heath used to clean All Saints Church and launder the priest’s
surplice using the old-fashioned iron with a curved funnel kept hot by using red hot coals from the kitchen fire. Their cottage and garden in Nelson Street (opposite Owairoa School of today) was bought after Sarah died in 1957 by the Howick Play Centre. But in 1968 the old cottage was demolished for a new building as well as the old orchard behind with camellia and holly trees that were in front of the cottage. Thomas Heath’s wife Jane died in 1913 aged 88 and many of their descendants still live in the area today. Many of the hard-working but moderate drinking early settlers lived long and productive lives. Alan La Roche Howick Historian

Rotary Community River Carnival The weather gods were smiling and the sun was shining bright this year at the Rotary Community River Carnival recently hosted by the Pakuranga Rotary Club. Every man, woman, child and their dog was there at the Bramley Reserve to enjoy the perfect family day out at the event supported by the Howick Local Board.
The free community event had lots of children enjoy the magic show, jump slide and the animal farm as well as the air trick mat, water sports and yummy food on sale. Adding a green lining to the event were students from Enviroschool Farm Cove Intermediate managing the colour coded bins to help people with waste man-
agement. Rotarian Sylvie Wilkinson from Rotary Club of Pakuranga said that at the last minute they pulled the plug on some of the fun water activities for kids. “We had booked the Zorb and water walkers but decided to drop it at the last minute, due to the water shortage and prolonged dry conditions.”

Eastern Busway on schedule
P
rogress to build stage 1 of the Eastern Busway is within budget and on schedule for completion in 2021. Work to build the new busway bridge reached a major milestone recently with the delivery of the beams that will span the length of the bridge. Two beams are currently on site, delivered independently by road from Whangarei. The delivery by truck was the largest ever single haul delivered from Northland. These are the largest single steel beams ever to be fabricated in NZ. The rollers required for the bridge to be launched into place are manufactured in Germany and weigh 6 tonnes each. There are currently 2 rollers on site with 2 more to be delivered next week The steel for the beams is manufactured in Korea, laboratory tested in both Korea and on arrival in New Zealand. The steel plate is cut and beams fabricated, painted and
transported by Culham Engineering in Whangarei. There are three main beams; The river edge beams are 66.5m each and the middle beam is 73.5 m. Each beam weighs more than 100 tonne Two piers are under constructed in the estuary. Each pier encompasses 8 foundation piles to hold the bridge. Each pile is 360 cubic meters of concrete poured in a single placement. The piers are formed by constructing a temporary steel boat weighing 75 Tonnes which is floated into position and lowered to bed of the estuary. Each pier has 2 columns constructed on top, each 7 m in height. Other key recent milestones in the project include the new layout of Panmure Roundabout into an intersection and laying the first concrete along sections of the new busway.
Drone footage shows the project is well on its way to completion in 2021.

Carpark baby assault An incident where a man was alleged to have assaulted a baby in a car on Monday February 17 in Howick is now before the courts. According to eyewitnesses, a man reached inside a vehicle window and attempted to grab a child who was seated. The child’s grandmother pulled the man’s arms down, and a member of the public subdued the attacker by punching and tackling him.

Late blooming sunflowers delight kindergarten kids Three kindergartens – including one in Flat Bush – were declared winners in the Daltons Late Bloomers Competition, part of the much-loved Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project. The kindergartens received awards for the Late Bloomers Tallest Sunflower and for the first time, there was a tie for the Widest Sunflower Head Award, with two kindergartens growing the same massive sized sunflower head. The Late Bloomers Widest Sunflower Head Award winners were KiNZ Mission Heights in Flat Bush, part of the Auckland Kindergarten Association, and Central Kids Putauaki Kindergarten, part of Central Kids Kindergartens, who both grew sunflower heads that are 36cm wide – that’s bigger than a large dinner plate. KiNZ Mission Heights teacher Rahimah Milatu says; “For the past four months, our akonga engaged in the Daltons Sunflower Project and researched the best conditions and actions that could affect the growth of our sunflower plants. Throughout the project they tested various theories and
observed how the temperature, insects, birds and human actions impacted the plants. “We predicted which sunflower head would be the widest, but unfortunately missed the moment when they bloomed during the holidays. “Since we’ve returned, our akonga have explored the finished sunflower heads. They watched birds eating the sunflower seeds and discovered for themselves that they are indeed delicious, with many “This is tasty!” comments. “This journey of learning has really strengthened our tamariki’s understanding and relationships with nature and we are delighted to be one of the Widest Sunflower Head winners.” The winning kindergartens will receive a Daltons prize pack which includes a voucher for products they can use in their gardens; plus, a framed photo of their stunning sunflowers. Waimea Kindergarten, part of Nelson Tasman Kindergartens Association, took out the Late Bloomers Tallest Sunflower Award with their sunflower plant measuring in at 3.20 metres.
Police arrived soon after and arrested the man. A police spokesperson has issued the following:
“Police have charged a 33-year-old man following an incident on the morning of February 17 in Howick. The man has been charged with assaults child, assault with a weapon and threatens to do grievous bodily harm.” “He will next appear in the Manukau District Court on February 25. “As the matter is before the courts we are not in a position to comment further.”
New GM at helm as village turns 40 K
rissy Perrett is the new General Manager for the Howick Historical Village. Krissy has had extensive overseas experience in museum roles, including London sites The Garden Museum in Lambeth, and The Bermondsey Fashion & Textile Museum. Most recently she has been the Retail Operations Manager for Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki . This year the popular local living museum is turning 40. On Sunday, March 15, The village will be celebrating the milestone by putting on a Fete day for all the family to come and take a trip back in time, and experience what life was like for the early pioneer inhabitants of Howick & the east. In an extrapolation of the regular ‘Meet the villagers day’, visitors will be able to enjoy a fun filled day with pony rides, farm animals, fairground games, butter-churning displays, and enjoy tea, coffee, and delicious lunches and snacks at the famous Homestead cafe. Krissy says the village is also a great place to hold wedding receptions in its Bell House function area. “The authentic Victorian homestead dates back to 1851 and caters for up to 70 people. The historic Church dated to 1852, adorned with painted white walls & wooden pews, is a great place to exchange nuptials. “
Krissy perrett is the new GM at the HHV.
The village is also a popular filming location for local and overseas productions. For the future, Krissy has big plans for the village “The phenomenal effort of so many people have created this wonderful Village over the last 40 years; with continued strategic thinking we aim to further develop our selfsustaining income by increasing visitor numbers and providing an

enhanced visitor experience. We aim to bring village more alive during the week with more volunteers, adding activities for visitors to participate in, more frequent activation of facilities such as the printing press and adding daily guided tours to the Village.” This is a place for the whole community, schools, local residents and a key part of bringing tourism to East Auckland.

wins, 21 by knockout and one draw. For Wilder it was his first loss in 44 fights, all but two won by KO. Having been the undisputed champion upon beating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 after the Ukranian giant had ruled for almost a decade, Tyson forfeited his fist-full of titles because of his addiction to drugs and alcohol. That allowed Anthony Joshua, Wilder and Joseph Parker to divvy them up. Parker has since lost his and Joshua has regained his five after losing them to Andy Ruiz jnr. who turned up fat and unfit for the return. Hopes that Joshua and Wilder

would clash in a winner-takeall contest never eventuated, presumably because neither wanted to gamble his world championship status at the cost of millions. However the super confident Tyson is likely to call Joshua out in an attempt to unify the heavyweight crown. That would make a pleasant change and give boxing back the credibility it lacks. An enigma who talks like a crazy man but boxes smart and can be genuinely funny, Tyson deserves credit for overcoming his previous addictions and getting himself fit. Having played the cocky clown by dropping his hands and inviting Wilder to hit him
in their first fight, he kept his promise of taking the fight to the champ in the second. He also tired Wilder by applying headlocks in the clinches, a la Muhammad Ali when he stopped floating like a butterfly. Having lost just one fight, Wilder is not a spent force and is still capable of lowering the boom on anybody with his right. Ruiz Jnr is also a danger if he prepares properly and Joseph Parker will need to get stronger to complement his speed if he is to be a genuine contender. Meanwhile full marks to 6ft 8in Kyle Jamieson who took four wickets and scored 44, including four sixes, in his first crack with ball and bat in the Basin Reserve cricket test over the first three days. His was a dream test debut after he was called in for Neil Wagner who stayed home to witness the birth of his first child. It was also pleasing to see Colin de Grandhomme pace himself sensibly in reaching 43 before Trent Boult produced a sharp 38. ■■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer.

After a record 46 days of no rain in Auckland, the morning of the event was met with showers that did little to deter the crowd who were there to enjoy the polo and all the event had to offer. The side-lines were packed for the infamous car versus horse race. First place went to the mighty BMW 8 Series Coupé with its powerful turbocharged V8 engine, that can achieve 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds. The Fashion on the Field competition was extremely strong boasting a colourful contingency of fashionable pieces and classic style. · Best-dressed woman was Julia Ford; best-dressed man Nathaniel Bryant and best accessory went to Jesper Lagerbaeck. As the sun set on the 43rd NZ Polo Open the evening kicked on with guests enjoying the George FM afterparty on the Chukka Lawn.
