Welcome to the district Congratulations on choosing one of the city’s most wonderful locations to call home. This beautiful corner of east Auckland offers a wealth of lifestyle options in a vibrant and diverse community that prides itself on its many man-made facilities and stunning natural heritage. East Auckland is a safe and welcoming area which is home to a flourishing multi-cultural community. More than 50 per cent of people in the Howick Local Board area were born overseas – most commonly in China. In fact, recent census data shows 38.8 per cent of people in the Howick Local Board area belong to the Asian ethnic group, compared with 11.8 per cent nationally. Pacific peoples make up 4.6 per cent of the Howick Local Board area compared with 7.4 nationally, while Maori make up 5.2 per cent of the area and just under 15 per cent nationally. A further 2.2 per cent of the area identify as Middle Eastern, Latin American or African while 1.1 per cent identify as other ethnicity. The area is continuing to grow – the Howick Local Board area alone saw an increase of 13,617 people (12 per cent) in between the 2006 and 2013 census. Its growing popularity is no wonder, with unparalleled views of the beaches, estuary and countryside. It also has comprehensive public amenities which include several large shopping centres and malls, excellent sports clubs, swimming pools, libraries,

Stockade Hill kindergartens, schools, movie theatres, community centres, arts centres and more. Keep an eye out for various events throughout the year – the Howick Village Markets, Midnight Madness, Brit and Euro Classic Car Show, an annual Anzac Day service on Stockade Hill and the always popular Howick Santa Parade which draws thousands of people each year, are just a few. Its settlers’ past can be explored through the Howick Historical Village where local history is brought to life through local re-enactment days. Close enough to motorways, hospitals and major transport links, yet just far enough away to relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle of city living, it’s an unmissable opportunity. New residents are encouraged to talk to their neighbours, visit information and community centres and explore the wider area including the rural route to Beachlands and Maraetai and nearby Clevedon. Discover an array of weekend markets and watch for special events. Most of all, just enjoy your new home and district – you are living in a wonderful part of Auckland.

Fascinating hive of places to visit The region’s history brings with it much character. Howick is named after the third Earl Grey, formerly Lord Howick, who was Secretary for the Colonies in the British Parliament and was responsible for the Royal New Zealand Fencible Corps immigration scheme. His family home is Howick Hall, Northumberland, England and the present Lord Howick still takes an interest in this small town named for his forbear. Howick’s Maori history and pioneering past is well documented and remnants of both form places of interest today. Some sites visitors may enjoy are: ALL sAINTs CHURCH is considered to be one of New Zealand’s outstanding early buildings. Designed by the Rev F Thatcher, it was pre-fabricated at St John’s College in Auckland and brought to Howick by sea. Completed in November 1847, it was the first building to be erected in Howick, and is now the second oldest church in New Zealand. THE GARDEN OF MEMORIEs in Uxbridge Road was land originally bequeathed to the council by the late Miss E M Nixon. Today it is used as a memorial to the Tainui Maori of the district and the early European settlers. sHAMROCK COTTAGE in Selwyn Road, just down from the village, was Howick’s first inn, called “The Royal Hotel”. Built in 1848, it is thought to be the second oldest building in the village, having originally been built as a “wet canteen” (liquor store) for the Fencible soldiers. The cottage was purchased in 1894 by Captain William C Daldy. He gave it its present name, after his first command, the schooner “Shamrock”. This unique building is now used as a restaurant. HOWICK HIsTORICAL VILLAGE. Visitors just love the chance to step back in time and experience the past at this wonderful Fencible settlement located within the boundaries of Lloyd Elsmore Park next to the Pakuranga United Rugby Club. Walk around the seven-acre site, and explore gardens and buildings from the 1840 to 1880 period. There are more than 30 original colonial buildings collected on site, including schools, a church, forge and general store. Chat to costumed staff in this living

Howick Historical Village museum, or take a break to savour home-style food and real coffee in the neighbouring cafe. The museum, cafe and shop are open 7 days from 10am to 4pm. Closed Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day. MUsICK pOINT beyond Bucklands Beach on the promontory at the end of Tamaki Estuary was a Maori stronghold until 1821, when the Ngapuhi tribe from the North descended upon the district and decimated the local population. The radio station situated on the point is named after pioneer aviator Captain Edwin C Musick. The point provides spectacular views of the harbour. FO GUANG sHAN TEMpLE offers a taste of the serene side of life and can be found on the corner of Stancombe and Chapel Rds, Botany South. As well as a place of worship, the Buddhist temple has become a hub for the entire community and a tourist attraction. It hosts many community and cultural events, has a variety of programmes ranging from a Chinese school to calligraphy and traditional folk dancing. The temple’s followers have also built up relationships with many local authorities including the police and city councils to ensure their messages reach the Asian community. A magnificent architectural feat, it is well worth a visit. All Saints Church

Head to the top of Stockade Hill for impressive views of Howick’s coastline, the harbour and islands and main road, Picton Street. Having earned its name from a stockade erected in the nineteenth century to protect settlers, Stockade Hill hosts regular events including annual Anzac Day services (April 25) in remembrance of New Zealand’s fallen soldiers. For those settling near Botany, head to Barry Curtis Park on Chapel Road. Named after a former mayor of Manukau, the park offers a range of amenities and events. The 94 hectare park is one of New Zealand’s largest and is an ongoing development, with wetlands, sports facilities, picnic areas and a large playground and has quickly become a favourite amongst locals. ST JOHN’S LOUNGE TOP OF THE LINE FACILITY Purewa Cemetery and Crematorium is proud to have been an essential part of Auckland’s eastern suburbs for nearly 130 years. With the opening of the St John’s Lounge in January 2017, Purewa is the first in New Zealand to offer families two after-funeral function lounges, as well as two chapels. Full service professional catering ensures families are able to have the type of function they choose. The St John’s Lounge offers the latest in after funeral-function comfort with spacious indooroutdoor facilities, state of the art audio visual technology and underfloor heating. Automated outdoor louvres can be opened or

closed depending on the weather, allowing funeral guests to use the outdoor deck in almost any weather. As well as providing top class catering services, the St John’s Lounge also offers very large funeral groups a peaceful place to view the funeral, if the seating capacity of the two chapels is exceeded. Purewa recently won an Australian audio visual industry award for the technical innovation and expertise behind its superb quality pictures and sound, available in both chapels. eFuneral live streaming is now part of many funerals, especially where families may be spread across the world. Purewa offers family and friends who can’t be physically present, the opportunity to take part in real time from wherever they are, and on a range of devices such as iphone, ipad, laptop and computer.

PUREWA EXPANDS TO MEET INCREASED DEMAND Purewa’s constant striving to be the best cemetery and crematorium in East Auckland, continues this year with two major refurbishment projects. The Lounge of Remembrance, which has been providing after funeral catering services since 2003, is to have a new roof and a major makeover, to be able to continue to offer families excellent hospitality services. The administration building will also be extended and upgraded to meet increasing public demand for expanded services. The redesign will include two new interview rooms and a Quiet Room, where families who have just lost a loved one can have a private, quiet space to sit.

Artist’s impression of the redesigned administration building. The redesigned administration building is currently undergoing the resource consent process, with construction planned to start in May - a four to six month project.

MOSAIC BUTTERFLYS MEMORIALISE LITTLE LIVES LOST A beautiful mosaic butterfly pathway has been created at Purewa to remember new born and still born babies. Well-known mosaic artist Joy Bell was commissioned by the Purewa Cemetery Trust Board last year to design and lay the pathway in the existing new born and still born area of the cemetery. The 95-metre long pathway will provide spaces for 93 memorials. The mosaic tile pathway is in shades of blue, green and white, but families purchasing memorial spaces will be able to choose individual butterfly shapes and colours, created by Joy Bell, to remember their precious little one. Purewa General Manager Clifton Thomson believes the artwork is an important public recognition of little lives lost. “Historically parents were rarely granted any contact with still born and new born babies that died. Thankfully things are different now, but we still feel it’s important that families have some special place to come back to and visit,” he says.

Everyone needs to “cover up”. Whether lying on the beach, gardening or painting the roof, use sun blocks, wear hats and reduce the time bare skin is exposed to the sun.

Specialising in:

CD1895

New Zealand has one of the highest melanoma death rates in the world. More than 2000 people are diagnosed annually with the disease and about 200 die from melanoma every year. Malignant melanoma is potentially fatal but early detection can avoid tragic outcomes with surgical removal of lesions being both simple and, in most cases, curative.

Eye health We all know the importance of regular eye testing, especially if there is a family history of poor eyesight or eye disease. In the industrial workplace, eyes at risk can be protected by wearing safety glasses and, remember, driving is impossible if eyesight fails. Holding a driver’s licence is dependent on good vision and motorists are advised to have an eyesight test every two years. Failing eyesight or other severe eyesight problems may be prevented or rectified by consulting an optometrist regularly. While biennial eye testing is recommended, there are times when more frequent testing may be required. These include during a child’s growing years when the eye is also growing; in middle life when the focusing system begins to weaken; and in later years when eye health problems begin to occur such as cataracts and glaucoma. Regular eye checks can help preserve eyesight but injuries can still occur. The eye is extremely sensitive and it is easy to aggravate an injury. In almost every instance proper medical aid is advised.

Spiritual life “I never weary of great churches. It is my favourite kind of mountain scenery. Mankind was never so happily inspired as when it made a cathedral,” said celebrated 19th Century novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. There is certainly no shortage of those in this neighbourhood – whatever your religion. Churches, temples and places of worship abound – Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist (just five of the mainstream Christian denominations) a member of one of the inter-denominational churches, or a devotee of any other religion. New residents will love All Saints Church in Howick. Completed in November 1847, it is the second oldest church in New Zealand.

Fo Guang Shan Temple

The Fo Guang Shan Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in the country. Designed in the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty, it took seven years to build and now stands tall on Stancombe Rd in Flat Bush. Featuring a large Buddha statue and a two-tonne bell, the mission of the temple is to promote Humanistic Buddhism but it is also open to and intended to benefit non-Buddhists.

East Auckland is a wonderful place to live, we know because we have been here for over 30 years. As a church, we offer a range of programmes and services that cater for the whole family. Whether you are a regular church goer or even if you have never stepped foot in one before, we would love to invite you to one of our services. You can expect encouraging messages, inspiring worship, exciting children’s & youth programmes. Come on down and say hi. Everyone’s welcome. Whether travelling by private car, bus, taxi or even bicycle, Howick Ward is easily accessed and not difficult to explore. The highways of Pakuranga Rd, Chapel Rd and Ti Rakau Dr essentially form a loop which, if followed, takes visitors past all major shopping centres and many of the area’s attractions. Transport links to or from Auckland’s CBD and across the city are good with various bus companies providing services. There is no rail access but visitors can travel by ferry from Auckland’s CBD to Half Moon Bay where there is a bus service available to central parts of the ward.

out & About

A near drive to everything local The Howick Ward and its many developing subdivisions continue to attract new residents who love the district’s mix of historical roots and modern urbanisation, seaside living and rural surrounds. And the great thing about the region is that it takes no time at all to access any of the area’s many attributes if you own a car. Of course, Howick and Pakuranga have grown beyond their original borders to take in Cockle Bay, the Peninsula area of Bucklands and Eastern Beaches , Half Moon Bay, Somerville, Meadowlands and the areas of Dannemora, Botany, Mission Heights, Ormiston and more. Newcomers love the proximity to all kinds of sport, health and public facilities as well as the district’s many natural resources – parks and beaches. And it takes no time to access the motorway at either Highbrook, Manukau, East Tamaki or the eastern arterial route. All part of a growing and diverse community, nevertheless these vibrant suburbs are just a stone’s throw from rural Whitford, Pine Harbour, Beachlands and Maraetai. A further short drive and one can soon be in the quaint village of Clevedon. Whitford village is

just a few minutes’ drive from Howick and Botany Town Centre. While some folk have opted for a rural lifestyle choice – large blocks of land of mostly five acres or more – many new residents just enjoy having the country on their doorstep. The district is named after Richard Whitford, who operated a flax mill in the area. The first European settlers were George and William Trice, who started farming in Clifton Rd in 1843. However, most settlers didn’t arrive until the mid 1850s. Over the decades, industries have included ostrich farming, quarrying, a brickworks, timber mill and more. Today the village is a meld of old-world charm and contemporary retail and it’s just ‘over the hill’ from Howick, a mere, 10-minute drive. From Whitford it’s not much further to Beachlands, Maraetai and Umupuia/Duders Beach. The round trip will take day trippers through to nearby Clevedon and it’s possible to return to Howick/ Botany over the West Road via Brookby. If totally new to the area, do take time to go exploring – you’ll come across beaches, markets and speciality shops on a Sunday afternoon drive – so just go and enjoy, it’s a breath of fresh air.

Area delivers on education Schools are generally top of the checklist when moving into a new district. Howick Ward is well endowed with many fine schools and in most cases, children attend the school closest to them. However, they can attend any state school, which does not have an enrolment scheme. Where there is an enrolment scheme, home zone children are taken first. If more places are available candidates are usually chosen via a ballot system. When considering a school, check its proximity to home or perhaps to your work place. Find out if the route is safe to walk or whether children take a school bus or public transport. Ask about uniforms, the cost of fees and donations and, perhaps, whether there is an after-school care programme nearby.

Arrange to visit the school, meet the principal and to tour facilities and classrooms. Ask if there is a buddy system in place and what happens when a child is sick at school. Read the latest Education Review Office report and visit the school website if it has one. Best of all talk to other parents who have children at the school. Ask if their queries and concerns are dealt with to their satisfaction and ask them what their children especially like about the school. If the school has an open day or information evening, be sure to attend. Every school has its own philosophy, strengths and special atmosphere. Be sure you are comfortable with the way your chosen or home zone school operates.

Ask yourself what you expect from a school such as emphasis on music and drama, a strong sports programme or extra support for special needs such as remedial reading, English as a second language, or a gifted children’s class.

Once you have made your decision, support the school and its teachers in every way you can. They have the education of your child/children in their hands so you should show your confidence.

around the home

Maintenance pays Refurbishments and renovations are generally an ongoing task as a homeowner and are essential to protect a property investment. Because the home usually revolves around family needs that change with time, maintaining and adapting a home can alter with the passing of years. Rumpus rooms and swimming pools which seemed like a good idea when children were young, may no longer be required when a couple reaches retirement age. Before undertaking any major alteration, take a good look around and decide whether to do the job yourself or to employ expert help. Busy professionals may decide to employ a project manager to source products, organise consents, book trades and supervise the whole job. The newly retired may opt for the same track if the job seems too big for them. On the other hand, with more leisure time, they may enjoy sourcing their own materials.

Whether recreating space for a new use, extending a home to accommodate a growing family, tackling landscaping or just revamping the interior, it pays to have a sound plan. Compare quotes and ask for recommendations when new to an area. The local district is blessed with tradespeople, landscapers and specialist companies such as kitchen and bathroom experts, who can assist with every type of home maintenance. Most companies work within a range of budgets and willingly provide in-home consultations with a free measure and quote. Some will even bring sample materials to make choosing easy.

But for most there will, at least, be a little (or a lot) of redecorating in store. It may just be a new carpet, a splash of paint or a change of curtains or it may be a total makeover – complete new bathroom and kitchen plus every room revamped. In a new house, the colour scheme may be in place or you may be in the throes of bringing it all together and need to use local suppliers. Whatever the case, south east Auckland offers excellent home décor and maintenance shops and services for every need. Naturally, when everything is finally done, it is important to protect one’s investment with ongoing maintenance and refurbishment. Fortunately, east Auckland is blessed with tradespeople and companies, such as kitchen and bathroom specialists, who can assist. Most cater for various budgets and some will bring samples to the home.

Often, bathrooms and kitchens are the most important areas to update. Fortunately, the local district is well endowed with highly professional kitchen, bathroom and building companies staffed by experienced people. Before starting a renovation, search for inspiration in magazines and pamphlets. Get several quotes and be sure each company is quoting on a level playing field – the same materials and the same quality of fixtures and fittings. Allow for extras and price rises. Many local companies will provide a free measure and quote and most will be happy to assist with ideas and practicalities that might change your initial thinking to some degree. Once you have made up your mind to do a renovation, enjoy exploring local businesses where you are sure to find only helpful, friendly service.

The centre also includes a Hoyts Cinema, food courts, cafes, banks, medical facilities and supermarkets with a Wednesday night market from 5:30pm. Residents will also find a welcoming village atmosphere at Howick which prides itself on its ambience and a largely owner-operated retail environment with many cafes and upmarket bars. Both a library and Uxbridge Arts & Culture are in the heart of town. Markets are a part of weekend life in Howick Village. On Saturdays the popular farmers’ market with food, produce, plants and gifts operates outside the Information Centre in Picton Street. Pakuranga Plaza is a busy, cheerful mall with an easy to access mix of shops and convenience services.

A library, community centre and Te Tuhi Centre for Arts is just a step or two away. Pakuranga Plaza encompasses a busy food court, gym, supermarket, post shop and banks with a petrol station on the outer fringe. The Pakuranga Night Markets operate under The Warehouse on Saturday evenings. At Highland Park, you’ll find courtyard style shopping with library, medical facilities, supermarket and postal services, along with a fire station and ambulance station just across the road. This centre is popular with retirees and shoppers who want quick, easy access with public amenities close by. The district enjoys several smaller satellite shopping centres, including Meadowlands with its supermarket and service facilities and shops and Botany South and Bishop’s Gate where there is also a Mitre 10 Mega DIY store. With shops covering everything from clothing and footwear through to food, beauty, gifts and much more, it’s hard to not find exactly what you’re looking for.

Factory bargains Money-wise shoppers can save dollars by doing the round of factory outlets where end of lines, seconds and overuns make for excellent buying. Throughout our local district, including the commercial/ industrial areas of East Tamaki and Highbrook, it is possible to source everything from clothing and footwear through to housewares and food. Factory shops range from small rooms out back of a commercial operation, to well set up showrooms. But one still has to know where they all are. An exploratory jaunt in the car can also prove an enjoyable day out. Before long you’ll discover it is possible to buy icecream and frozen foods, sweets, bulk foods, knitwear, fashion clothing, underwear, rugs and carpet, garden accessories, toiletries, gifts, baby clothes and products, children’s books, luggage and more at reduced prices. Once you know where to go, outlet shopping will be a must.

PETS

Help pets settle in Pets love routine and stability in their lives, so moving home can be a stressful time for them (and you!) But there are some simple steps pet owners can take to help them adjust. Check out the following tips: n Be sure to microchip. It’s a great idea to microchip pets (your vet will do this for you), and update their details on the NZ Companion Animal Register (www.animalregister.co.nz). This will help you find lost pets if they wander off from their new home. n Have everything ready. If there’s going to be a lot of disruption at your new place, consider boarding your pets in a kennel or cattery for a few days, while settling in. n Provide a refuge room. When your cats move to a new home, keep them confined indoors (with a litterbox) for at least a week. Also provide a quiet ‘refuge room’ where they can avoid the stress and noise of unpacking. n Explore slowly. Take your dog on regular walks around the new neighbourhood so it can identify smells and start

learning where this new home is located. Don’t rush things with your cats – they will explore outside when they’re ready. n Keep things familiar. Unpack your pet’s things straight away. Familiar items such as beds, bowls and toys will help them feel at home. n Be prepared. Establish yourself with your new veterinary clinic as soon as possible. Don’t wait for a medical problem to arise. Call in, have a look around, and register your pet’s details.

On the water There are a plethora of leisure activities to keep eastern district residents happy. In particular, this area enjoys a beautiful coastline with sheltered beaches and harbour access, making water sports and related activities popular. Sailing in its many forms occupies both young and old, and there are yachting and sailing clubs with opportunities to learn. Fishing is a major past time in the area with a number of fishing competitions held throughout the year. Many locals own leisure craft, however, those without a boat can take advantage of local charters, which operate day and night fishing trips. Moorings and a hardstand at Half Moon Bay Marina and Pine Harbour Marina plus associated businesses help make life easy for boat and yacht owners. There is a passenger ferry service to the city and to Waiheke from both Pine Harbour and Half Moon Bay marinas. A vehicular ferry to Waiheke Island also operates from Half Moon Bay. Other water sports include windsurfing, water skiing and scuba diving with affordable P.A.D.I. diver training available.
