Welcome to the district... Congratulations on choosing to live in this vibrant and multicultural area of Auckland – the south is a diverse community with a wealth of facilities and amenities for every age group.

which has been welcoming settlers for 150 years. Now, 2016 sees a new dawn as housing projects escalate, attracting families looking for value without sacrificing lifestyle.

From Manukau in the north, through to Papakura in the south, the region is enjoying a resurgence of growth as prospective homeowners discover affordable and attractive housing among a range of properties within new and existing suburbs.

With its proud heritage, Papakura is facing a vibrant future boosted by its growing population and new neighbourhoods including those in Takanini, Karaka Lakes and Drury.

At Manukau, new apartments are springing up in close proximity to its comprehensive and central shopping city. These are also close to the new train station and new Manukau Technical Institute campus situated at Hayman Park (at the corner of Manukau Station Road and Davies Avenue), directly above Manukau Station. Just a stone’s throw away is the Manukau District Court, the long-standing fun park, Rainbow’s End, the architecturally relevant, Vodafone Events Centre, the Manukau SuperClinic which provides specialist outpatient appointments and day procedures and the new Vector Wero Whitewater Park. But the wonderful facilities of South Auckland go beyond central Manukau. To the east there still remains easy access to the countryside and facilities such as pony clubs and sports parks. As one heads further south, the magnificent Auckland Botanic Gardens at Manurewa is free to the public and offers many hectares of gardens, walks and recreational areas as well as cafe facilities. At the other end of the road, so to speak, is Papakura, a district

SETTLING ETTLING IN N 2016-17

At the centre of this population growth is its great location on the Manukau Harbour, with easy access to the Southern Motorway, being a real bonus. The area’s amenities also offer varied lifestyle opportunities with key facilities such as Massey Park Stadium and pool, McLennan Park and the world-class facilities at Bruce Pulman Park, fast making Papakura the sporting hub of South Auckland. New locals will find a museum, art gallery, markets, theatres, plenty of dining facilities and much more. With a train station virtually in the heart of Papakura, rail links to Auckland’s CBD and centres such as Manukau, Sylvia Park and Newmarket are excellent. Shopping, schools, medical facilities and professional and trade services abound ensuring the many new developments are already served by essential amenities. Other residential suburbs, lying between Manukau and Papakura, all offer their own particular appeal. So, enjoy your new home – you are living in a fascinating part of New Zealand – here’s to settling in quickly and best wishes for the future.

HIS TORY

Papakura’s rich history all in a name The explosion of housing growth in and near Papakura, especially in the Takanini area, heralds a new lifestyle age but the district is steeped in history. Papakura is a Maori word believed to have originated from papa, meaning earth or flat and kura meaning red, reflecting the rich, fertile soil upon which the community was founded. An early frontier settlement, the first Europeans made their home there some 150 years ago under what was then the Waikato Immigration Scheme. Many of those original 4000 immigrants, tempted by the offer of free land, settled in wider Papakura and also further south in the Franklin district. They came from Scotland, Ireland, England and the Cape Colony, leaving behind families and all that was familiar to them. The voyages were long and arduous and some arrived in their new homeland having lost loved ones en route. On arrival they faced long delays before even setting foot on ‘their’ land with most living in disused army barracks, tents, or shacks at best.

Aviation history made in Papakura Aircraft and flight enthusiasts will be fascinated to learn that the first controlled powered flight in New Zealand took place over Papakura in February 1911.

Port Waikato

6

SETTLING IN 2016-17

Pioneering aviators, Vivian and his brother, Leo Walsh built a British-designed Howard Wright biplane from imported plans. When it was completed, a small group of spectators watched Vivian fly the ‘Manurewa’ more than 350 metres at a height of 20 metres over Glencora Park – an amazing feat. The brothers went on to found the New Zealand Flying School, with Vivian becoming the first New Zealander to obtain an aviator’s certificate and, of course, today, the Ardmore Airfield and local flying clubs continue the area’s long association with aviation.

Peace tree stands test of time We think of our schools as places of learning but when the Reverend W.C. Wood planted an acorn in the Papakura School grounds on July 19, 1919, as a contribution to the local peace celebrations after the First World War, the school yard took on new meaning. This ‘peace oak’ was intended not so much as a war memorial but as a symbolic commemoration of peace and victory. The tree and accompanying plaque can still be seen near the north-western boundary of what is now Central Park, within view of the Papakura-Karaka First World War memorial.

H I ST O R Y

Manukau For many years the wider Manuaku district was mostly rural with settlement escalating after the Second World War. The 50’s then the 60’s and 70’s saw development of suburbs such as Manurewa, Hillpark, Totara Heights and later The Gardens plus other new housing subdivisions. With the amalgamation of Manukau County and Manurewa Borough in 1965, Manukau City was formed but it wasn’t until New Zealand-wide reorganisation of local government took place in 1989 that Manukau City absorbed Papatoetoe City and Howick Borough too. However it lost some land to the newly formed Papakura District. For the next 21 years it thrived and under progressive mayors saw burgeoning growth across its multi-cultural region especially in the east. But then, on November 1, 2010 Manukau City Council was abolished and the governed area was amalgamated into the Manukau, Howick, Manurewa-Papakura, and Franklin wards of the new Auckland ‘SuperCity’.

Manukau Train Station New infrastructure has seen the completion of a new southwestern motorway from Manukau City almost to Avondale with further extension underway to provide a loop road from the north-western motorway to the southern. This link provides easy access to Auckland Airport. The name Manukau, from the Manukau Harbour west of the city, is of Maori origin, and means ‘wading birds’ although it has been suggested that the name of the harbour was also sometimes rendered as Manuka, meaning a ‘marker post’ with which an early chief is said to have claimed the area.

Auckland Botanic Gardens

Manurewa – a central hub Lying between Manukau centre and Papakura is the suburb of Manurewa with its well-furnished town centre housing a number of professional services such as accountants, lawyers, physiotherapists and orthodontists. In addition there are essential services such as libraries, schools, and the Local Board office. Manurewa has a varied retail offering which includes a variety of cafés, and beauty services and the town centre itself has a large number of medical and personal services. In particular Manurewa is well known for the Auckland Botanic Gardens

and also the Nathan Homestead, home to the Manurewa Community Arts Centres, both on Hill Rd. Manurewa Town Centre is proud of its Sunday market in the Northcrest Shopping Centre. It boasts ample parking both for shopping locally and for those travelling from its centrally located train station to other parts of Auckland City. Education - pre-school to high-school Education is one thing new South Auckland families don’t have to worry about. From childcare and pre-school facilities through to secondary college, as well as extra-curricular activities and tuition, the district is well catered for. When it comes to pre-school care, parents can be confident that they will find something to suit their personal needs. In addition to playcentres and kindergartens, there are numerous childcare centres that offer all day care for children from working families. Some of these cater for very young babies and some may take primary aged children after school has finished. Centres adhere to strict regulations and offer proper sleeping arrangements for young infants. Some provide hot meals during the day and most have excellent indoor/outdoor facilities. All employ trained staff and work to government guidelines when it comes to teacher/child ratios, social programmes and developmental skills. Newcomers to South Auckland can be confident about local

schools too. The wider area is well endowed with quality primary and secondary schools, some in rural districts which offer a touch of country to their focus. While most secondary schools and many primary schools are subject to zoning, it is possible in some cases for out of zone pupils to be placed in a school of choice if there are unfilled places. Some have no zoning restrictions. Most local schools have an open door policy when it comes to community interest and parental enquiries are welcomed. When seeking an appropriate school enquire about special programmes such as music, drama, catering, science, environmental sustainability and sports programmes. As well as formal state and private education facilities, there are also opportunities to attend hobby classes and special interest groups with tuition on a variety of subjects. Without doubt, South Auckland offers people of all ages and cultures many exciting and satisfying ways of learning in a structured or informal environment.

Plenty of health practitioners New residents seeking professional services from health, beauty and wellbeing experts will find plenty of choice locally. There is no need to travel far for quality health providers such as dentists, doctors, podiatrists, dieticians, personal trainers or beauty therapists, South Auckland offers plenty of choice. Of course, skin and hair care, inner health, sound feet, beautiful hands, a fit body and a pain-free existence are all part of general wellbeing and these areas of life take precedence for some. In addition to general practitioners and medical centres, South Auckland is home to the Manukau Super Clinic, offering an outpatient service and day procedures. There is no emergency department as this is located at Middlemore Hospital in Papatoetoe. For those wanting private hospital treatment then Ormiston Hospital and the Specialist Centre at Botany South is perfectly situated. However, at Awhinatia Health, in Papakura, Counties Manukau Health provides a wide range of dedicated mental health services for Manukau, Papakura and Franklin residents.

The Papakura Primary Birthing Unit with associated midwifery service, is located in Clevedon Rd, providing yet another valuable health facility in the district. In addition to medical and counselling services, there are, of course, pharmacies, beauty and massage therapists, hairdressers, nail technicians and various health practitioners, including acupuncturists and more throughout South Auckland. Whether one is seeking a deep cleansing facial, invigorating or relaxing massage, traditional Chinese medicine or a pedicure, there are clinics, studios and salons to choose from. Natural health therapists offer many forms of relief for different and often distressing conditions while for some a spa treatment, inner cleansing, hair appointment, exercise workout, skin rejuvenation or massage is a regular ritual never to be missed. Explore your local area and discover a wealth of health practitioners, across a broad spectrum, who make treatment of illness or accidents and relief from stress, tension and worries, their client priority.

Eye health Regular eye testing will help ensure good eye health especially if there is a family history of poor eyesight or eye disease. In the industrial workplace, eyes at risk can be protected by wearing safety glasses and, remember, driving is impossible if eyesight fails. Holding a driver’s licence is dependent on good vision and motorists are advised to have an eyesight test every two years. Failing eyesight or other severe eyesight problems may be prevented or rectified by consulting an optometrist regularly. While biennial eye testing is recommended there are times when more frequent testing may be required. These include during a child’s growing years when the eye is also growing; in middle life when the focusing system begins to weaken; and in later years when eye health problems begin to occur such as cataracts and glaucoma. Regular eye checks can help preserve eyesight but injuries can still occur. The eye is extremely sensitive and it is easy to aggravate an injury. In almost every instance proper medical aid is advised.

Final farewell Discussing funerals and death is seldom easy but working through this process with reassuring and approachable professionals helps put people at ease. Families place considerable trust in funeral directors at an extremely difficult time and, fortunately, South Auckland is privileged to have the services of long standing and reputable companies which offer practical and emotional support. Flexible and culturally sensitive, local directors can help with suggestions for venues, caskets, flowers, service details, brochures and more. They can also advise on ways in which to involve family, friends and grandchildren in the service and can, generally, take care of special burial or cremation requests too. Those in need of professional yet dignified assistance after a death in the family, have plenty of help at hand.

We're here to help you through a difficult time Our caring team will look after your wishes and help you plan a memorable, affordable service with attention to every detail. Two excellent locations with 24 hour care: Cnr Wood & Elliot Sts, Papakura Ph (09) 298 2957

Dining and entertainment There is a diverse range of excellent entertainment and dining venues throughout South Auckland. While dining out can be a haphazard affair when patrons are unfamiliar with their local restaurants, by taking a drive around the local district, newcomers will not only become familiar with the area but will gain a feel for the many and varied dining options available. What’s more there is something for all tastes and budgets. New residents will find local café owners and restaurateurs to be accommodating and willing to oblige special requests such as vegetarian, gluten-free or dairy-free meals if advised early enough. However, most venues already have a range of vegetarian choices on their menus. Remember too, come public holidays, many waiver surcharges and at Christmas, a number of restaurants remain open throughout the holiday period. Regardless of whether one is seeking a laid-back family restaurant which is priced accordingly, casual BYO wine café, a local ‘drinking hole’ with great bar snacks or an upmarket venue with top of the range cuisine, the local district has it all. In fact, with its selection of contemporary and ethnic cafes, trendy bars, coffee houses and diverse takeaway outlets, not to mention that the friendly Manurewa Cosmopolitan Club and the

22

SETTLING IN 2016-17

Weymouth Cosmpolitan Club both offer locals loads of choice. But beyond the dining scene, South Auckland also offers pub gigs, concert venues and cinemas. In addition, The Hawkins Theatre community cinema and performing arts venue has been an essential part of Papakura for the past 25 years. It provides a venue for everything from local theatre to touring shows of all description. It also hosts a season of films, with a particular focus on New Zealand, overseas festivals and ‘arthouse’ films. At Manukau the Vodafone Events Centre hosts many concerts as well as sports, cultural and corporate events. In addition there are various markets to choose from including the Manukau Markets on a Sunday at the Vodafone Events Cente and The Market on Broadway in Papapkura every Saturday morning. The latter offers a selection of food, health, beauty, clothing, arts and gifts, and entertainment for the whole family. The whole of Broadway between Great South Road and O’Shannessey Street is closed to traffic to create the market environment. These are but two markets; others are held in various parts of the wider district. Indeed, throughout South Auckland, new residents will find a meld of rustic and sophisticated ways to socialise and enjoy life.

Renovations With house prices climbing dramatically in recent years, many local homeowners have opted to renovate their existing home rather than sell and buy again. Often the most important areas to update are bathrooms and kitchens. Fortunately the local district is well endowed with highly professional kitchen, bathroom and building companies staffed by experienced people. Before starting a renovation scour magazines for ideas. Be sure to get several quotes and be sure each company is quoting on a level playing field – the same materials and the same quality of fixtures and fittings. Allow for extras and price rises. Many local companies will provide a free measure and quote and most will be happy to assist with ideas and practicalities that might change your initial thinking to some degree. If a garden renovation is on the agenda, enjoy exploring local nurseries and garden centres where you are sure to find landscaping supplies and garden art as well as a plethora of plants to transform the outdoors.

Home décor Whether moving into an existing property or a new build, most new home owners will be thinking décor, furnishings and landscaping. For a lucky few everything will be perfect. But for most there will, at least, be a little (or a lot) of redecorating in store. It may just be a new carpet, a splash of paint or a change of drapes or it may be a total makeover – complete new bathroom and kitchen plus every room revamped. In a new house, the colour scheme may be in place or you may be in the throes of bringing it all together and need to use local suppliers. Whatever the case, South Auckland offers excellent home décor and maintenance shops and services for every need. Naturally, when everything is finally done, it is important to protect one’s investment with ongoing maintenance and refurbishment. What’s more, because the home revolves around individual family needs that will change with time, it may become necessary to make major changes. Rumpus rooms and swimming pools which seemed a good idea when children were young may no longer be required

when reaching retirement age? However, before undertaking major alterations take a good, impartial look around and decide whether you can do the job yourself or need professional help. Whether recreating space for a new use, extending the home to accommodate a growing family or ageing parents, or remodelling for a more contemporary look, it pays to have a sound plan. Fortunately, South Auckland is blessed with tradespeople and companies, such as kitchen and bathroom specialists, who can assist. Most cater for various budgets and some will bring samples to the home. Regardless of what type of job needs to be done – accessorising, restyling, extending, landscaping or total makeover – new residents will find reputable people in the interiors/exteriors industry to help.

RURAL

Maintaining a lifestyle block For some people the move to South Auckland may also mean relocating to one of the area’s small blocks with enough land to keep a few animals or a large garden. But a small block of say, between two and 10 acres, still means work even if it isn’t big enough from which to make a living. There will be fences to build and maintain, hedges to cut and possibly hay to make. You may even have a small arena to maintain if a pony is part of the package. There could be a need for chicken coops or animal shelters as well as sheds to house specialist tools and equipment. Think about security, veterinary services and the many other jobs which come with owning a lifestyle property. Fortunately, the South Auckland area is home to many rural orientated businesses which can provide the proper advice, services and expertise needed to ensure small blocks and the

animals they support, remain in peak condition. While many landowners are also able handypersons, others work during the week and may need to employ experts to do those ‘must not neglect’ jobs. Before starting out on any project, and certainly before bringing in animals you may know little about, ensure you are fully prepared. Seek the advice of knowledgeable and experienced local people. You’ll find everything you need nearby from experts on animal care and feed right through to a mountain of services to keep your property and equipment in good order.

PE TS

Help pets settle in Pets love routine and stability in their lives, so moving home can be a stressful time for them (and you!) But there are some simple steps pet owners can take to help them adjust. Check out the following tips: ■ Be sure to microchip. It’s a great idea to microchip pets (your vet will do this for you), and update their details on the NZ Companion Animal Register (www.animalregister.co.nz). This will help you find lost pets if they wander off from their new home. ■ Have everything ready. If there’s going to be a lot of disruption at your new place, consider boarding your pets in a kennel or cattery for a few days, while settling in.

where this new home is located. Don’t rush things with your cats – they will explore outside when they’re ready.

■ Provide a refuge room. When your cats move to a new home, keep them confined indoors (with a litterbox) for at least a week. Also provide a quiet ‘refuge room’ where they can avoid the stress and noise of unpacking.

■ Keep things familiar. Unpack your pet’s things straight away. Familiar items such as beds, bowls and toys will help them feel at home. ■ Be prepared. Establish yourself with your new veterinary clinic as soon as possible. Don’t wait for a medical problem to arise. Call in, have a look around, and register your pet’s details.

■ Explore slowly. Take your dog on regular walks around the new neighbourhood so it can identify smells and start learning
