FROM THE

EDITOR ON THE COVER TOP DOG: It’s said every dog has it’s day and for Luna, a deaf blue heeler, today is her day, or rather November is her month. This five month old ‘cover girl’ was rescued by her ‘mum’ Courtney when the breeder thought to have her euthanased because of her deafness. But, Courtney wasn’t having a bar of it. She gave Luna a loving home then entered her into a calendar promotion to help other rescued animals. Luna was one of 12 dogs to make the cut. See story pages 22-23. Win!

AFTER THOUGHTS The nation has voted and, as has been well documented, Labour was returned to Government in a landslide victory largely based, I suspect, on the huge popularity of Prime Minister Jacinda Adern, who so many people see as saving us from ‘the end of the world – that is, Covid-19. To be fair, there were few, including myself, who did not doubt a Labour win but, now, it’s to be seen if the Government will break hard left, veer slightly to the right or sit firmly in the centre. While voters have clearly voted Red have they thought how long we will remain in the ‘red’. Providing the future is rosy, borrowing now is, perhaps, not much of a problem but how confident can we be that the future remains bright.

WIN! A PRIZE BUNDLE FROM RADIANCE

Keen to light up your life? If so, Radiance is on hand to help! Produced using natural health formulas, Radiance products are intended to help us lead happier, healthier lives. What’s more, as products now come in reusable and recyclable aluminium tins, they really can be gifts that keep on giving. Thanks to the bright sparks at Radiance, we have a prize bundle (valued at more than $130) up for grabs featuring: Radiance Hair, Skin and Nail Gummies, Hemp Seed Oil, Magnesium Effervescent, and Adult Vitamin C and Zinc Gummies. To be in to win, complete the form at www. southmagazine.co.nz.

Back at Christmas, 2019 we never expected the global disaster that descended just weeks later and 10 years ago we never expected a Christchurch earthquake. Many economists are saying there is no time like now to borrow; that we can go higher than 40% of GDP. However, others have said that may be okay for bigger economies such as the USA but ours is still a very small economy and another natural disaster, such as a Wellington earthquake, (and I don’t mean rumblings in The Beehive) could

see New Zealand in a precarious position. With many community leaders holding forth on the need for more money, more assistance, more input in areas such as education, health, housing and social welfare in general, it seems this country has problems a plenty which need fixing. In my mind that needs a strong economy – and some caution when it comes to incurring more debt. Therefore, I hope this government with so many young, eager but novice politicians, won’t let election night success go to its head and that New Zealand will see policies to help it prosper and not become a nation dependent on welfare and unhealthy borrowing. Finally, congratulations to all candidates who were returned to parliament and also to those heading there for the first time; I’m guessing we’re all in for a, interesting but turbulent, three years.

Absolutely Fabulous A young mother’s near- death experience left her with a vocation to brighten even the darkest of days for those nearing end of life. Helen Thompson-Carter tells ANGELA KEMP how suffering a cardiac arrest in her prime helped to make the strong and successful woman she is today.

She was a healthy, happy mother of two girls aged four and seven when the unthinkable happened. “I went to bed on a Friday night as normal, woke up and had a heart attack. I had no chest discomfort or pain before the heart attack. I was just 37. I wasn’t supposed to make it but I did and it’s made me very passionate about life and doing the things which are important,” says Helen. In 2014 she launched her own jewellery business, Fabuleux Vous, or FV Jewellery as it’s better known, based out of the family’s Drury home. Her mission was to design and create emotionally empowering jewellery as well as giving back to charities close to her heart. A businesswoman who began her working life as a registered nurse, Helen says she fell in love with the jewellery industry and recognised a niche that wasn’t being filled. “It wasn’t for the beauty, or for the material pleasure, but for the story that went with each piece,” she says. “I wanted to have a jewellery brand which was innovative, inspiring and accessible and to share my love and story with many others. It could be honour, play, bravery, faith, celebration or remembrance. I wanted to connect jewellery to the owner.” About 18 months ago she www.southmagazine.co.nz

South November 2020.indd 9

launched the ‘Always’ collection, a collaboration between FV Jewellery and Hospice. Several thousands of dollars have been raised so far with Helen donating $20 from every bracelet and $5 from every charm sold to the hospice of the buyer’s choice.

“I do as much as I can to support the Heart Foundation including getting in touch with young mothers who’ve had heart attacks and public speaking to women’s groups. The really scary thing is that 56 women die each week in New Zealand from heart disease.”

in a lifetime. But I was given it too fast and that nearly killed me.’

She named the collection ‘Always’ because she says jewellery is one of the few things that is often passed from generation to generation.

It’s 20 years since Helen’s heart attack but she remembers it as if it were yesterday.

“Some might say I was the unlucky one but on the other hand, I think I’m actually one of the lucky ones to be given the gift of fulfilling my life.

“Jewellery is a very powerful, emotional connector. I created a story board where people could share and celebrate life’s special occasions while giving back to hospice. It’s not a collection about death and dying, it’s a collection of celebration.” A former palliative care nurse at Middlemore Hospital, Helen says she disliked most nursing roles but “absolutely loved the privilege of looking after someone, and their families, at the end of their life”. It’s something she intends returning to one day. “I absolutely loved my nursing career I just hated places such as A&E, theatre and ICU; but geriatrics, medical and surgical – being on the ward with patients and their families – was what I loved”. Helen’s other charity of choice is the Heart Foundation for Women.

“Although it came out of the blue there was a history of heart disease in the family,” she says. “The afternoon before it happened we had been in the cardiac surgeon’s room with my mother. She was due to go into hospital the following week to have a double coronary bypass. “No-one could have guessed the family would be visiting not one but two heart patients at the same time. We were in different hospitals – mum was private at the Ascot – I was at Middlemore. “It must have been horrendous for my father and siblings: they were going to coronary care to coronary care. Mum was in her 60s and I was 37. “I was very sick for about three months and was left with a lot of residual pain in my left arm. They couldn’t work out why I had the heart attack. I was given a drug that you can only have once before you’re 65 and only twice

Eventually Helen learned that she had Cardiac Syndrome X or microvascular angina. She has never had another incident and says she is completely well.

“My life completely changed but it made me treasure and appreciate the smaller things. I love birthdays because every birthday means I’ve lived another year. I look for reasons to celebrate.” The first collection Helen designed was named ‘Declaration’ which tells her own story – a journey of love, loss, hope, faith, peace and a life changing event. She describes it as 12 elements of life being woven into one collection. “For me it tells my story but it could in fact be anyone’s story. My favourite piece in this collection is the heart, Inscribed on the reverse side are the words ‘Love, Life, Live’. For me this piece says it all.” FV Jewellery is sold throughout New Zealand as well as stockists in Australia and the Cook Islands along with a distributor in The Netherlands. south | november 2020 | 9

THE BRIDGES OF

Irene & Max Brit

The upcoming Franklin Hospice Garden Ramble (Nov 14-15) will showcase some of the finest gardens in the region, thanks to the support of Barfoot & Thompson, not to mention many a keen gardener. Ahead of the ramble, JON RAWLINSON was treated to a tour of one garden which expects to be a star of the show.

Birts’ country Even in the most troublesome times, bridges connect us. While Max and Irene Birt’s garden does not follow any particular theme, its three stunning bridges and meandering paths deliver a sense of freedom, encouraging visitors to explore it their own way and in their own time. “I guess the theme of this garden is just a lovely, peaceful place to be,” says Max, with a characteristically understated summation. The bridges are a key feature; two of them are built atop logs from trees felled soon after Max and his wife, Irene, moved to their Karaka property. “When we cut them down, I thought we may as well get some use out of them,” he explains. “We own the [Max Birt Sawmill in Mangatawhiri] so wood plays a

big part throughout. I guess some of the ideas come from my years working [in forestry] too.” With ferns and palms prominent, the garden offers an eclectic mix of exotics and native plants, as well as paddocks where Max (who worked as a shearer in his youth) raises sheep or, as he describes them, ‘organic lawnmowers’. The property’s waterway, replete with a veritable carpet of lilies, adds to the rich and varied palette of colour. While aesthetics play an important role, the property includes an orchard growing a range of fruit. In the veggie garden the couple grows everything from tomatoes and lettuces to pumpkins and corn, depending on the season. “Since the children left home we

don’t need to grow as much as we may have in the past. In saying that, we still grow a fair bit of fruit and veggies because we enjoy giving them to friends and family. Futhermore, fruit trees add extra colour as well,” Max says.

The most recent upgrade to this country garden has been undertaken for practical reasons, although the result appears to give the garden a new lease on life, contrasting with some of the longer established sections.

Although his efforts have been behind much of the work in the garden, Max credits his wife, Irene, as the other major architect of its development.

“We had a lot of Leyland cypress planted as windbreaks but then canker got them.

“Together we have designed and organised the garden but we’ve had help with the more physical stuff over the years, mostly from contractors,” he confirms. “I’ve been a keen gardener most of my life. Even when I was a kid I had veggie gardens, and I was involved with growing pine trees when I was younger, so I’ve always been very hands-on.”

“So, the latest burst of work has involved removing those – more than 400 trees – and replacing them with palms. It was about this time last year we started taking the old trees out so people who have been here before then will see that a lot has changed.” Interestingly, removing dead wood was also one of the first tasks the Birts set their skills towards approximately 30 years ago, Irene recalls. www.southmagazine.co.nz

ax Brit

“When we moved here there was no garden; about a dozen dead trees and that was it,” she says. “There was no fencing and a lot of gorse. We’ve added to it bit by bit over the years, as money and time have allowed. The kids – all four of them – helped early on as well.” Max jokes: “In their early years, they used to help out for pocket money, but as they grew older, they became more interested in going out with boyfriends or girlfriends and ‘to hell with the old man’s garden’!” Irene’s eye for design certainly appears to have been invaluable. “Max is great [with design] too but I have a fair amount of input. It’s been a joint effort, design-wise, but that’s still mainly down to him. He’s better in the garden and I’m www.southmagazine.co.nz

South November 2020.indd 11

better in the house.” With qualifications from the respected Nanette Cameron School of Interior Design under her belt, Irene runs Gorgeous Homes, a business specialising in drapes and also offering home staging to ensure homes up for sale look their best for marketing. “I think I have a better eye for colour, though, and Max listens. I’m creative and he’s very regimented – which is good but it drives me crazy sometimes!” she adds. “We may have the odd argument along the way, but there’s nothing unusual about that! We end up agreeing in the end.” Looking around this spacious, colourful garden, it would be hard to disagree with the results.

GARDEN RAMBLE ON TRACK Max Birt might be happy to ramble on (in a good way!) about his glorious garden but when visitors on this year’s Franklin Hospice Garden Ramble drop by, Irene has other plans. “I’ll be here but Max probably won’t be, he’s a bit shy,” she jokes.

“This is the first time our garden has been in this ramble but we’ve been part of other charity events in the past,” Irene says.

“I’m not shy,” Max retorts, “I think I’d just rather be fishing than ‘networking’!”

“One of the organisers who’d visited us during Christmas in Karaka asked if we’d like to take part. We work on the garden for ourselves but if we can help out such a good cause along the way, we’re happy to do so.”

The opportunity to soak up inspiration by the wheelbarrow – by the viewing the gardens and chatting with the gardeners, including Irene – is a major drawcard for the ramble, which supports the Franklin Hospice.

The Birts’ property may also host a market day for the event, although this is subject to pandemic restrictions. For more information, including details of all gardens on show, visit www.franklinhospice.org.nz. south | november 2020 | 11

Like father, like son teacher to child ratios also mean children are not just numbers; they’re getting the attention they need to learn and grow. It enables the teachers to deliver their best.”

Codie Banks was one of ACG Strathallan’s founding senior students – and 18 years later his son, Cooper, is following in his footsteps at ACG Strathallan Preschool.

And deliver they do, even during Covid-19 lockdowns.

“It was pretty neat that Cooper could be one of the first second generations to attend the school,” says mum, Lauren.

“Despite being only a preschool, the staff arranged two or three zoom calls every day to keep in contact with the kids while we were in lockdown,” Lauren says. “They also had daily activities which not only helped the children learn but assisted parents in entertaining them!

“Strathallan Preschool is much more than just a day care; everything it does creates incredible learning opportunities. The environment is warm and inviting, and staff members are nurturing. Cooper has grown in confidence because he’s always encouraged and made to feel comfortable.”

Lauren & Codie Banks with children Cooper and Harper.

Cooper started in the Infant Preschool at 13 months, and hasn’t looked back.

Now aged two-and-a-half, and in the Junior Preschool, Cooper is still engaged and inspired.

“The bond he formed with teachers and the low staff turnover meant he always felt settled and happy. Learning opportunities were created from things he was interested in and not just generalised. This taught him that learning is fun, and it’s great to try new things,” Lauren says.

that Lauren believes really set ACG Strathallan Preschool apart.

“He’s building on the strong foundations he gained in the infant centre and is adding to this at an age-appropriate level. He loves being with the bigger kids and having a bigger playground to run around in.”

“Teachers use an app called Storypark to keep parents updated with what their kids have been up to. They put so much time and effort into this – updates are often done out of hours which shows how committed they are and how much they care.

But it’s the host of other benefits

“Small group sizes and excellent

“No one else I spoke to had anything close to this with their early childhood facility, so it shows how far ACG goes to support children’s learning.” It’s safe to say that the Banks family’s experience at ACG Strathallan Preschool has been nothing but positive. “We couldn’t be more impressed with how ACG Strathallan Preschool is nurturing our little boy. You know it’s a quality centre when the first thing he says at pick up is ‘I had a good day today, Mummy’.”

THE KIDS LIT TLE HECTOR MEETS MINI MAUI As his name suggests, Little Hector is not used to being the biggest dolphin in the sea. So, when he meets his smaller cousin, Maui, Ruth Paul’s playful hero can’t help but be a little bit bossy. The latest addition to a series best suited to readers aged 3-5 years, Little Hector Meets Mini Maui demonstrates that friendship isn’t about size, it’s about how well we share.

itchy dogs Dr Nikki Frost BSc BVSc MANZCVS (Medicine of cats) suggests ways to control allergic reactions such as itchiness in dogs.

Spring and summer mark a time of increased itchiness in dogs. Not only does the flea population explode, so does the pollen count which can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive dogs.

Unlike people, in which pollen allergies tend to manifest as hay fever, in dogs it tends to manifest as itchy skin and is known as atopy. Atopic reactions can be caused by allergens such as grasses, dust mites, moulds, storage mites and even the dog’s own yeast.

AMAZING AOTEAROA ACTIVIT Y BOOK

Typical signs are itching/ scratching/licking/rubbing/ chewing one or more of the following areas: feet, groin, under the tail, axillas (armpits), neck, ears, and face.

During summer New Zealand can be a most wonderful place to explore. However, if the weather doesn’t play ball young Kiwis can continue the outdoor fun indoors thanks to this book. Featuring more than 60 games, puzzles and activities, Amazing Aotearoa Activity Book is specially designed to help young readers (aged 6-12) learn more about our country, it’s people, our cultures and more.

Because these are allergic reactions, we can’t cure this disease, only manage it. Avoidance is the best method, but of course to achieve that we need to know what to avoid and, given that pollen allergy is so common, this may not be possible. It is possible, however, to desensitise the animal against those items they are allergic to with a process called allergen specific immunotherapy.

dampen down the immune response but can have potential side effects, some of which can be quite serious. Newer treatments include Apoquel, a daily anti-itch tablet which doesn’t have the side effects steroids can have or Cytopoint, a canine monoclonal antibody which works against the enzyme which creates the itch. It is given as a monthly injection. Other things, which are important in controlling itchy dogs, include: • Regular good quality flea control. While some dogs can be allergic to fleas, in those who are not, one flea on an already itchy dog can send an itch into overdrive. • A high quality skin diet, high in omega 3 fatty acids such as Royal Canin Skin Support which also contains turmeric and other ingredients designed to help repair the skin’s barrier function. • Shampooing with an appropriate shampoo such as the dermatologist created Virbac range. • Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation such as Coatex to reduce inflammation, moisturise the skin and aid in the skin’s protective barrier.

Zinnias

Suited to almost any type of soil, ideally zinnias require freedraining, rich soil, with a pH level of roughly 5-8.

– ON TO A WINNER! A little colour goes a long way; a lot goes, well... even further! Renowned for their vivid blooms, zinnias can become a focal point in the summer garden.

From yellow and white, to pink, red, purple and orange, these annuals produce a vibrant mixture of blooms, providing a resplendent splash of colour.

zinnias should be planted from spring until early summer. While seeds may be started indoors if frosts are a problem, provided the soil is warm, they can be sown directly into the garden.

What are zinnias anyway? Quick and easy to grow, zinnias (Zinnia elegans) produce an abundance of brightly coloured blooms, with one flowerhead on each stem.

Zinnias prefer hotter conditions (at least 15 degrees Celsius) with limited humidity. Choose the location carefully; once established, they don’t usually respond well if transplanted.

There are three basic varieties of zinnia, dwarf, intermediate and tall. Tall varieties tend to grow to about 80cm in height; however some leggy ladies, such as Gold Medal or Giant Wine, can actually top the one metre mark.

If planting tall zinnias be conscious of their expected height, otherwise other plants may be left jaded by the shade. Intermediate and dwarf varieties, on the other hand, are most suited to borders and containers.

In most areas of New Zealand,

soil, ideally zinnias require freedraining, rich soil, with a pH level of roughly 5-8. Although height ranges considerably, many of these blooms have legs up to there, so be sure to check seed packets before planting to allow plenty of space in which to grow. This can range from just 10 to 60cm. However, as a general rule of thumb, 15-30cm will be sufficient. Sow seeds just below the surface of the soil – at a depth of roughly 5-7mm. Add compost when planting to speed germination. Remember to deadhead zinnias to extend flowering and as long as the soil remains moist, but not boggy, there beauties can be expected to

thrive. A little fertiliser will assist growth. If humidity is too high, powdery mildew may result. Keep an eye out for tell-tale signs (white powdery spots on stems and leaves) and treat accordingly. Some insects, such as caterpillars, can also prove problematic. Germinating in approximately one week, zinnias are quick to stand up and be counted; depending on conditions, most varieties will bloom within just over two months. Beyond their good looks – either as cut flowers or in the garden – zinnias serve another, quite important role – they attract bees so they can actually help improve pollination of other plants. www.southmagazine.co.nz

Papakura VIBRANT

Beautiful Papakura is a place to gather, shop, eat at any time of the year with its colourful planter boxes, and bright bicycle ‘gardens’ all adding extra ‘bloom’ to the town. But, now, as Christmas approaches, a truly festive air is set to dress this busy precinct. Students at 28 schools are dressing trees in keeping with the spirit of the season and these, together with more than 100 Christmas flags, will line Papakura streets as part of the Papakura Business Association’s yuletide decorations. The big tree near Farmers will be lit up and there’ll be Christmas swags and decorations under verandahs

and on building tops all adding a note of festive cheer.

What’s more, you can’t miss the #Live Papakura sign on the top of the fountain which is back lit at night and also highlighted by more gorgeous planters. Other hasthags to visit include #EatLocal and #ShopLocal. Of course, there are plenty of good reasons for visiting Papakura any day (or night) of the year– the township is home to more than 400 businesses and the Papakura train station is the sixth busiest in Auckland. When it comes to dining out (or

in) you can’t go wrong – some 65 food outlets include a selection of restaurants, cafes, bakeries and takeaways. Menus range from Thai and Japanese to Indian, European, Turkish, steak house, pizza and much more – something for most tastes.

However, if a little exercise is on your mind be sure to look for the 18 stunning murals which feature throughout the town – discover the route by visiting www.papakura. co.nz/art-trail-map-papakura/ Created by local artists, the mural trail is not only impressive but some of the murals are interactive where you can have your photo taken – see Davis Street Carpark

and Angel Wings. Feel free to post them on Instagram with #livepapakura Remember, too, Papakura has two Facebook pages with information about events, promotions and all things happening around the town – see PapakuraTownCentre and LivePapakura while instagrammers might like to use #LivePapakura on Instagram Finally, visit the website www. papakura.co.nz which lists businesses and their contact details – it’s a go-to for all you need to know about Papakura but best of all, head into town yourself and enjoy all that’s on offer!

Christmas PAPAKURA’S

HITS

It’s a hard road to ho (ho ho) finding the perfect Christmas event. However, thanks to the ‘jolly’ good folk at Papakura Business Association, we have made a list (which our editor has checked twice!) featuring some of the best festive events on the calendar.

ROTARY CHRISTMAS PARADE & CHILLING IN THE PARK Beginning and ending at Central Park, one of SOUTH’s favourite local parades offers all the fun of the fair. On from 3pm, December 6, the parade is followed by Chilling in the Park (4-6pm), which will see festivities continue with live music, children’s activities, food stalls and much more on the menu.

SANTA’S GROTTO & SATURDAYS IN TOWN

Come all ye faithful to see Santa and place your orders with the big man at his local grotto (182 Great South Rd, Papakura), December 16-23. Aside from Sunday, December 20, Santa will be available for photos each day. Bring your gifts to be gift wrapped for a small donation to a local charity. What’s more, Santa and a host of entertainers will be at Centre Court (11am-2pm) every Saturday in December.

LATE NIGHT FESTIVE FUN

Phone 09 298 8996 www.papakura.co.nz

When it comes to finding the perfect gift, better late than never! While some early birds will have their shopping done by December 10, this event sees shops open late (until 8pm) and also features entertainment from musicians and street performers at Centre Court.

Canine posers, CALENDAR CHARMERS! It’s been tough times for many this past year but family and businesses aren’t the only ones to have suffered from financial downturns created by Covid-19. Many pets have been given up by struggling owners unable to keep them but a community initiative is set to help a charity doing its best to rescue abandoned pets. When three local businesswomen decided to produce a 2021 calendar to help an animal charity in these Covid-19 times their focus wasn’t on muscled firemen, cute kiddies or even ageing ‘calendar girls’. Rather, the trio looked to feature much loved rescued dogs on every page.

talents which we could use to give back to the district we love.

Katrina Johns, together with friends, Chanelle Reid and Vicky Wallis, all members of All Round Networking decided it was time to action their thoughts on helping some arm of the community.

As a result the girls called for dog owners to submit for consideration a photograph or their pets with a few words about them.

A photographer and graphic designer, Katrina said she was happy to use her camera skills to produce a fundraising calendar with 100 percent of the profits going to charity. “Vicky owns Pet Connection and Chanelle is from Ice Marketing – we felt a calendar suited our combined www.southmagazine.co.nz

South November 2020.indd 23

“This is not a commercial enterprise; it’s a labour of love, a chance to do something useful and to help a charity which might, itself, be struggling for funds.”

“We received more than 180 entries, all dogs with a story to tell as they themselves had been rescued,” Katrina says. “Subsequently, it was really difficult narrowing the choice down to just 12 dogs. They all were so lovely and deserving but, finally, after much discussion, we settled on 12 which I’ve been photographing for the calendar.

“Local businesses have each generously sponsored a page which will pay the printing costs and ensure all monies from sales will go to our chosen charity, Hope Rescue South Auckland, which helps animals in need, unwanted, abused, stray or abandoned.” A dog owner herself, Katrina owns Accent Photography and says the project has been fulfilling. “Being around happy dogs, which display a love of life, has given me great pleasure. Being able to put these photographs into a calendar to help others is the icing on the cake.”

The trio has also ensured each dog owner will also receive a photograph which shows their pet at its best.

The calendar, priced at $15, will go on sale mid November and can be purchased either online via the Facebook page or from Pukekohe businesses, Printing. com and RazorWeb and from Frog & Lily Café (Wrights Water Gardens, Patumahoe). Go to: www.facebook. com/franklindogscalendar for all information and to watch for the calendar’s release. south | november 2020 | 23

COCONUT LATIK PARFAIT Thanks to another team effort – this time involving top chef, Sachie Nomura – we have a tempting recipe drawing on the intriguing flavours of The Collective’s Vietnamese Coffee Yoghurt. What’s more, as proceeds from this yoghurt will go to Fertility NZ (Ms Nomura’s chosen charity, through the Chefs for Good initiative) we can all help spread the love! 24 | south | november 2020

INGREDIENTS • 80g crushed biscuit • 500g tub of The Collective’s Vietnamese Coffee Yoghurt • 1/2 cup cubed sponge cake • 1 425ml tin coconut milk

To serve: • Latik – toasted coconut crumbs • Fresh berries • Chocolate fingers (optional)

it off. Stir occasionally. Cook until the coconut separates from the oil and turns into a nice light brown colour. Use a strainer to remove the coconut oil and retain the crumbs. Cool it down and store in an airtight container. Tip: You can also store the coconut oil for future cooking.

To make Latik (makes 60g of crumbs): pour the coconut milk into a frying pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium high (make sure you see gentle bubbles on the surface) and cook

To assemble: put the biscuit crumbs in a serving jar or glass and pour 1/4 of The Collective’s Vietnamese Coffee Yoghurt on top. Add cubed sponge cakes and cover with another 1/4 of the yoghurt. Garnish with seasonal fruits, latik, and arrange chocolate fingers before serving. Serves 2. www.southmagazine.co.nz

ROUNDUP

SLICE OF JENNY

PASSIONFRUIT SLICE

Wine columnist and connoisseur, DENNIS KNILL, gives his view on new releases and award-winning vintages. Church Road is not only one of the oldest and most popular tourist wineries in New Zealand it’s also the forefront of the Hawkes Bay winemaking region made famous by the late Tom McDonald. Established from humble beginnings in 1897 the winery today is much more than a historic cellar door which has preserved its self-contained history and strong presence but continues to produce some of the best wines that money can buy. It was almost a century ago, at the age of 14, that Tom McDonald decided to get his education on the land by starting his working life as a cellar hand at the winery. In 1936 Tom purchased the winery enabling him to further his passion for producing red wine. In 1949 he released the country’s first commercial cabernet sauvignon and before long he was known as the father of red wine. Tom passed away in 1987 leaving behind a legacy of quality winemaking.

INGREDIENTS Base: • 1 cup self-raising flour • 1 cup desiccated coconut • 1/2 cup castor sugar • 125 butter, melted

Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease an 18cm x 28cm slice pan and line it with baking paper. Combine the flour, coconut and sugar in a bowl. Stir in the butter; mix well. Press evenly over the base of the prepared pan and bake for 15mins or until lightly browned. www.southmagazine.co.nz

South November 2020.indd 25

Passionfruit topping: • 395g can condensed milk • 1/2 cup strained fresh lemon juice • 1/3 cup passionfruit pulp

Meanwhile, combine condensed milk, lemon juice and passionfruit pulp in a medium bowl. Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth. Pour passionfruit mixture over the hot base. Bake for a further 15 minutes or until just set. Cool in pan and cut into pieces when cool.

In 1995, as a tribute to Tom McDonald, the first TOM cabernet sauvignon vintage was produced followed by TOM chardonnay 15 years later. Since joining Church Road in 1998, winemaker Chris Scott has continued the TOM journey and etched the winery into the list of great New Zealand vineyards with the introduction of new varietals such as syrah and viognier together with winning numerous awards along the way.

Virtual fashion week

GLOBAL SUCCESS A virtual week of fashion shows instigated in California, and featuring collections from international and emerging designers, has given EastLife readers a bird’s eye view of sensational styles from innovative designers.

While in a normal world, fashionistas would be attending fashion shows and shopping the new collections, this year the global market was faced with a new reality due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the USA’s award-winning Fashion Community Week featured its first ever virtual four-day event in September, attracting views from around the globe. A global fashion tech conference, with two days of runway shows, it included an interactive shopping event, featuring ‘Hot off the Runway’ collections. Throughout the four days, a wide range of fashion, from leisurewear to evening couture and bridal gowns, was under the spotlight, the event being premiered every day through five social media platforms and websites, making it accessible for everyone to view from different parts of the world. Although unusual, it proved highly successful for both the viewers and the creators.

inspired tones of fuchsia, coral and teal; highly saturated yet still feminine and classic.

At Mikko Shoes, ‘must-have’ footwear colours embrace two ends of the colour spectrum, the cornerstone being ‘poolside daydream’ – punchy, playful, 60s

But those who love a neutral will enjoy ‘design emotion’, a Nordicinspired, earthy palette; think jute, woodgrain and cork featuring a blend of sophistication and warmth.

Check out interesting silhouettes, textures and features introduced in winter and now evolving into beautiful summer styles – large scale exotic prints, the 90s square toe, brushed metallics and the architectural heel. Look for corsage trims, with glamorous oversized adornments.

On the leisure front, sneakers remain seasonless but come with fresh interpretations, including platform soles, touches of metallic, animal prints, lace-effect and retro influences. Add to that, feminine shades and styles for casual outings.

Every corner of this extraordinary flower boutique exudes quality and refinement and why wouldn’t it? Owner Melanie Kennerley (whose own garden is a rural paradise) and her team of four florists have, in just 18 months, earned a reputation for exemplary floral design and flawless presentation.

“Corporate giving is a big part of our service but, naturally, we create for all occasions and special events,” she says. “Regardless of whether a client simply wants a charming posy or a room full of flowers to add the finishing touches to an event, we put the same effort and love into every creation.

While a visit to The Wild Rose is an excuse to admire and mull over the many different floral and gift ideas, the shop’s website also provides ideas and makes placing an order super easy. “Our site shows a wide range of styles and price options but orders are not limited to what can be seen online. We accommodate specific requests every day,” Melanie says. “Sometimes customers want a particular flower or colour, sometimes companies (and private clients) wish to include items which represents their product or has either corporate or personal significance; it’s our job to source, design and deliver the very best. We love adding a splash of colour to people’s lives, we hope our customers love it too.” www.southmagazine.co.nz

CHAIRS? CHEERS! Pulling up a pew and parking one’s ‘derriere’ around a kitchen island or home bar is a common practice in Kiwi homes. However, not all perches are created equal. Standing (or should that be sitting?) in testament to this Mezzo Collection range of bar chairs.

BEST BAR NONE?

In homage to mid-century furniture design, this range recalls an age of

rat packs, playboys and soup cans. And, yet, it combines this with the shape of things to come as well; effectively, it’s a modern take on a bygone age. DECK THE HALLS! It’s nearly Christmas and time to add some extra cheer to the home so why not deck the halls, the walls, floors and the whole Christmas table with Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

These divine images and homemade projects show Annie Sloan’s latest creative ideas to help celebrate Christmas in style; with just a touch of paint and easy DIY. No matter what the project or look for the season, Annie Sloan Chalk Paints have a colour to match and the good news is that these paints are available from Zelda’s Daughter Painting Studio in Hunua and can be used on various items. Here is the Annie Sloan beginner’s guide outlining the basics of chalk painting furniture: • Remove any hardware from your furniture if possible.

• There’s no need for priming or sanding! Just make sure the piece is clean and wiped down with no harsh chemicals. • Stir your chosen Chalk Paint colour. Dip brush in, and apply paint straight onto furniture. Paint in every direction and all over the piece. • Wait for the first coat to be touch dry. Depending on your climate, this could be 1-3 hours. Once dry, apply a second coat in the same manner. • Wait for the paint to be fully dry. Next, apply the wax in the same manner as the paint.

Use a brush or lint-free cloth to apply in all directions. Work in sections so you know where you’ve been! • Once applied, use a lint-free cloth to remove any excess wax. Do not rub too hard, as you could remove all the wax. • And that’s it, finished. You can use the piece of furniture as soon as the wax is touch dry, but please note it will take up to two weeks to reach full hardness (known as the ‘curing period’). During this time please be careful with the piece.

Zelda’s Daughter Painting Studio not only stocks these paints but also runs regular painting classes.

PRIVACY ACT CHANGES Wynyard Wood solicitor, ZAID MOHAMMED explains the new Privacy Act 2020. A lot has changed since the Privacy Act came into effect in 1993, including the evolving use of the internet and data storage. A new Privacy Act 2020 (the Act) will come into effect on December 1, 2020. Whilst the Act retains the 12 key privacy principles found in the Privacy Act 1993, changes reflect the major developments that have occurred over the last three decades. The new Act brings New Zealand in line with international privacy and data protection laws.

KEY CHANGES: (a) Notifiable privacy breaches – If a business or organisation has a privacy breach which it believes has caused, or is likely to cause serious harm, it must notify the Privacy Commissioner and the affected individuals. The commissioner will provide an online privacy breach notification tool to give guidance to assist businesses and organisations with this new obligation. (b) Compliance notices – The Privacy Commissioner can issue compliance notices to businesses or organisations for a privacy breach. The notice will set out steps required to remedy non-compliance with the Act and will specify a date for making the necessary changes. (c) Enforceable access directions – The Privacy Commissioner can

direct businesses or organisations to provide individuals access to their personal information. Access directions will be enforceable in the Human Rights Review Tribunal. (d) Disclosure of information overseas – If your business is based overseas, but you deal with individuals in NZ, you might be caught by the new Act even if you do not have a physical presence in NZ. The change introduces regulations on the disclosure of personal information. Under the new Act, NZ business or organisations will need to ensure overseas agencies have similar levels of privacy protection as those in NZ. If the overseas service provider doesn’t offer similar protections to those in NZ, the individual concerned must be fully informed that their information may not be adequately protected. (e) New criminal offences – There are two new criminal offences. It will now be an offence to: (i) Mislead an agency to obtain someone personal information; and (ii) Destroy documents containing personal information knowing it has been requested. The maximum penalty is a fine of up to of $10,000. With the new Act effective in less than three months, it’s timely to review your existing practices and check privacy policies will comply with the new Act.

IT IS NEVER TO L ATE TO... PART 1 (BILL POTTER — Personal Power Coach. Thought Leader. Global Speaker. Bill has already made personal presentations in 57 countries... so far. http://www. speakers.co.nz/our-speakers/all-speakers/bill-potter/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToRhF22nARM Those of us who have lived a year or two on this crazy Planet Earth thingie, may have experienced directly or indirectly, learnt about it when studying history, or even heard the stories from others, who had lived through it, that this human journey of ours, has been disrupted by just about everything! In case you don’t understand the concept of ‘disruption’, here is a timely reminder for you. It starts the moment you open your eyes each morning. Which, by the way, is a blessing because you’re still here! Kapeesh. The key disruptors are your phone, radio and alarm clock. Blame them. Go on! In case you haven’t really noticed, here are some of these mean ‘disruptors’ that we have lived with forever : work; rain; exams; artificial intelligence; social media; neighbours; illness; cancellations; redundancy; elections; dead batteries; new babies; accidents; homework and sleep disorder. And, don’t forget chocolate deprivation. Just kidding. Or, maybe not... And, now, to Pandemics. A pandemic is a

worldwide spread of a new disease. Like ‘social media’ for example. It is a cocktail of disease, reaction, panic, fear, stark reality, danger, investigation, ingenuity and frontline heroes. Along with ‘war’, it is the ultimate wake-up call! It is the revelation of complacent meandering and ignored mismanagement. For you and me... it is an opportunity to believe, understand and create a new ‘life formula’ for ourselves. It is never too late to... do many new things. I’ll tell you in Part 2. In the meantime, be positive, be thankful we live in New Zealand and start planning your 2021 now! I have created my new, international ‘after Covid-19’ Course... LeaderSpeak©. It is for achievers who want to become leaders, but are not yet sufficiently confident to lead or make a difference. I introduced the ‘2020-2030 : the tumultuous decade’ challenge, in early 2019. GARDEN THOUGHTS

– H E D G E S, F O U N TA I N S While beautiful gardens are an essential part of landscaping one’s property it’s not always about shrubs, flowers and trees – hedges and water features can play a most effective role. Planting a hedge is a traditional but attractive way to delineate your property. However, doing so also has a number of other benefits including: • TO MAINTAIN PRIVACY – A hedge will provide a natural barrier around the property, blocking the view of your yard and outdoor entertaining space and often muffling sounds from other properties. Griselinia is a popular hedging material which can be kept trimmed to almost any height or perhaps try camellia setsugekka which makes for an easy to manage hedge, its white flowers adding a pretty note to your garden mix. • TO BLOCK WIND, DUST AND SOUND – In addition to diverting strong gusts, a hedge will soften the breeze in your yard, creating a comfortable microclimate. Shrubs such as photinia, michelia figo and dogwood are good wind, dust and sound breakers. • TO DETER PESTS – A hedge made of thorny plants such holly will help keep unwanted animals off your property. Additionally, plant around vegetable gardens to protect them but remember to be careful when pruning or working nearby. Before planting a hedge, be sure to consider the required maintenance. Most types need to be pruned and www.southmagazine.co.nz

shaped at least once a year Fountains have long been a popular garden feature but do consider style, location and upkeep. When it comes to style, some fountains are freestanding, which means they can be placed in the middle of your lawn or within a large garden area. Others are wall-mounted and may be incorporated into another water feature such as a pond or even a swimming pool. Also think about the fountain’s size and shape as well as the durability of its material. Don’t forget to consider the amount of noise the fountain will make – what may seem soothing at first can become annoying after time. Aside from size and style, homeowners need to consider location. Most fountains need to be installed near a watertight electrical outlet, protected from the wind and moderately shaded. Finally, think about upkeep – fountains and other water features need to be maintained. Check the water level periodically and replenish it as required. Remove debris from the pump and clean the filter on a regular basis and, additionally, special products may be needed to help control moss, algae and plant growth. While some fountains are good to operate year round, at the end of the summer, you may prefer to empty the fountain, clean and store the equipment and cover the outdoor structure until the follow spring.

BEWARE ASBESTOS

W H E N R E N O VAT I N G Smith & Sons Pukekohe owners, Lane and Melissa van den Brink outline the need to address health and safety when renovating. Who else has been enjoying this warmer weather as we draw closer to Christmas? The Christmas rush started much earlier than normal for us. We are in the thick of it and trying to deliver some beautifully renovated spaces prior to Christmas. Amid all the rushing around, one thing we have been talking about is health and safety. It is of prime importance that all our contractors go home safely at the end of the day and that our clients are safe while we are renovating their homes. Health and safety is a big part of what we do, and it should be for everyone within the Industry. Part of health and safety measures is looking at what could happen and what we can do to prevent or reduce risks. We examine all this before we come on to a site to start construction. We ensure all our staff has

current first aid training and we work closely with our contractors to ensure we are all on the same page. We also do a ‘run through’ with our clients to make sure they are aware of onsite risks and we look at ways they can stay safe. One of the big items on the list is asbestos awareness. This is becoming more and more widely found as we renovate older homes. An experienced, responsible builder will advise that any home built pre-2000 should be tested. Asbestos was used in a wide range of products within the building industry from cladding and roofing through to the vinyl on floors and in ceiling products. Once asbestos is found, only specialist crews can come and remove it then dispose of it. It cannot just be taken down and thrown in the skip! For more information feel free to pop down and see us at 19 Manukau Road, Pukekohe
