akuranga MP Simeon B r o w n has said the latest lockdown will be a devastating blow to Kiwis as Auckland faces its second day at Alert Level 3 shutting all but essential businesses. At 11.59pm Sunday night, Auckland moved to Level 3 for a period of 3 days, until midnight on Wednesday. The rest of New Zealand moved to Level 2 for the same period. This will be reviewed on a 24-hour basis and we will provide daily updates. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said three days will give the Government time to gather further information, undertake large-scale testing and establish if there has been wider community transmission. “The levels remain the same as you will recall from August,” the PM said. “That means the main thing we are asking people in Auckland to do is stay in your bubble other than for essen-

tial personal movement.” Simeon Brown said news of the change to Alert Level 3 in Auckland following news on Sunday of three new Covid-19 cases in the community will not be the news that Aucklanders will have wanted to hear. “It is important we all follow the public health advice and to get tested if required,” said Brown. “It will be an anxious time for many people and I encourage you to reach out to family, friends and neighbours who may need some reassurance or support. “The latest lockdown will be a devastating blow to New Zealanders who have sacrificed so much to keep this country Covid-free. “I feel for those who have already sacrificed their livelihoods, their jobs and their businesses to keep Covid19 out. This will be difficult news for all New Zealanders. “The Government must now move quickly to find the source of this latest community outbreak and to vaccinate our border workers as

a matter of absolute urgency.” Meanwhile, Botany has been identified by the Ministry of Health as a current location of interest related to Covid-19 in the community. Anyone who was at Bunnings Warehouse in Botany at 320 Ti Rakau Drive, Burswood on Saturday between 1.30pm - 4.30pm is being asked to stay at home and get a test on February 18 and call Healthline on 0800 3585453. Meanwhile, Howick Local Board chair Adele White said the board office is currently closed and the board has reverted to conducting its workshops and meetings online. “We can still be contacted by email or phone but, most importantly, I wish to remind residents to contact Auckland Council’s call centre (phone 3010101) with any queries or issues requiring urgent attention.” These can also be reported using “Report an Issue” on Council’s website. ➤ Turn to page 2

Police are reminding Aucklanders that checkpoints have been re-established under Alert Level 3 in and out of the Auckland region. The boundaries will be set mostly in the same locations as the last time Auckland was in Alert Level 3 in August. Eight checkpoints on the outskirts of Auckland will be stopping vehicles and questioning drivers, ensuring there is no non-essential movement through the region. From midnight, anyone attempting to travel across the regional boundaries should expect to be stopped and asked for proof of essential travel. The exemption process will run the same way as it has previously. More information is available on the Covid-19 website (covid19.govt.nz). HEALTHCARE

East Care petition backed by thousands of local residents By CHRIS HARROWELL

M

ore than 10,000 people signed a petition calling for what was east Auckland’s only overnight medical service to be reinstated. The 11pm-7am service provided by East Care Accident and Medical in Botany Road ceased operating on December 18 last year. East Care Group chief executive Gordon Armstrong said at the time that it was a move “taken with enormous regret”. “We have found ourselves increasingly caught between a rock and a hard place, to the point where we can no longer provide a safe and high-quality overnight operation.” Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) funded the overnight medical service from 2014-2018. East Care funded it since then but shut it down last December. Botany MP Christopher Luxon and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown have collected 10,454 signatures on a petition calling for the service to be reinstated. They’ve met with Counties Manukau Health chief executive

Margie Apa and her executive leadership team as well as the DHB’s board to discuss the issue. “It was a pretty constructive meeting,” Luxon told the Times about the face-to-face with Apa. “We outlined our concerns around the loss of the service and they shared with us how they thought it would work running the emergency service out of Middlemore Hospital.”

Luxon says several constituents recently told him about negative experiences at the hospital’s emergency department. “It’s just a poor customer experience, with people sitting on the floor or being told to go away and come back later when a doctor’s on. Middlemore is overwhelmed.” He points out east Auckland is the only part of the city without local afterhours or 24/7 care.

“People are travelling a long way to Middlemore and often these people are in quite a lot of pain and discomfort.” Brown says people who live in suburbs such as Beachlands and Maraetai will have to travel even further to get to Middlemore Hospital. “That’s where East Care played an important role, not just for our suburbs but communities further away. “It provided access to health care when people needed it.” He says the DHB is “short of cash” and “looking to save money where they can”. “Their view around waiting times and service delivery and staffing is quite different to the community’s expectations. “We are talking about a cut in service level for our community, which I don’t think they fully appreciate.” A spokesperson for Counties

Manukau Health says it reviewed its services in 2017 and worked with providers to ensure it could concentrate them where they’re most needed. That saw it increase its investment in after-hours clinics, doubling the number available to the community to eight. That number includes East Care, which continues to be funded by Counties Manukau Health until 11pm. “These clinics are open on weekends / public holidays and up to 11pm on weekdays,” the spokesperson says. “They provide free or low-cost care for children under 14 years old, adults over 65, and Community Service Card or High User Health Card holders. “We’re confident this investment best meets the needs of the Counties Manukau community. “There are also a number of general practices in the local community which operate extended hours into the evening and on weekends. “This year we’re undertaking a scheduled review of our urgent care service offerings to ensure they continue to best meet the needs of our community.”

TRIBUTE

Keon larger-than-life community man By NICK KRAUSE

L

ong-time former Manukau City Councillor Barry Keon, who with his wife Suzi raised their family in Beachlands for 35 years, has died. Keon, referred to by his family as a larger-than-life character in the community, was a Manukau City councillor from 1989 to 2004. He passed away at the Howick Baptist Home on Friday, February 5. A Times feature piece written in August 2010 by former Times journalist and deputy editor Marianne Kelly marking Keon and his wife’s golden wedding anniversary goes a little way to painting a very good picture, Kelly writes: “For some councillors and community board members, he’s a pain in the butt for his “kick-ass” Aussie approach to getting things done, but his wife of 50 years loves him dearly. “He’s wonderful,” says Suzi Keon of her husband Barry. “I hear him on the phone. Nobody gets things done like he does.” The couple were celebrating their golden wedding anniversary (2010) in the midst of Keon putting his hat in the ring for a Pakuranga subdivision seat on the

new Howick Local Board. At the time it was close to five years since the couple had moved from their beloved Beachlands clifftop home to Half Moon Bay. They quickly became involved in community affairs and were a force behind establishing Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association which he chaired. Keon and the ratepayer group were instrumental in the development of the Half Moon Bay to Bucklands Beach walkway. Barry is a Sydneysider and Suzi is originally from Melbourne. In 1968, Barry was seconded to New Zealand as sales and marketing manager for New Zealand and the Pacific for bio-pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers. They settled in Beachlands and only go back to Australia for holidays. They were only in New Zealand on transfer from Australia for two years, but loved it so much that Barry left his company and started five businesses in 1971. He also dived into community affairs with the Beachlands Residents and Ratepayers Association and then served on Manukau City councillor for 15 years.

Sailing also became a passion for the Keons. “The happiest day of my life was when our son traded a pony for a P-class,” said Keon, who became a volunteer skipper of New Zealand Maritime Museum’s scow Ted Ashby when he retired from the council. In 1995, he and his 21.3m trimaran yacht Triptych hit the headlines when they sailed to Mururoa Atoll, France’s nuclear test site in the South Pacific, as part of a protest flotilla. Kelly adds: “His cheeky Aussie ways got him into a brief fracas with armed French naval authorities when the yacht, with partying sailors from the rest of the flotilla on-board, “accidentally on purpose” floated into a no-go zone.” Suzi, told the Times last week that Barry was a great grandpa and great-great grandpa. “He was very proud of his family and his grandchildren particularly. He loved them dearly.”

Being active members of the community is something that Swee Han Lim, branch manager of Davis Funeral Services Pakuranga and receptionist Dale Neil pride themselves at. They have both lived locally for over 20 years. Swee Han, who is married to school teacher Natalie Baker Lim, is a member of the Highbrook Rotary Club, volunteers at his church and has been a street collector for the Pink Ribbon Street appeal for the last four years. “Being a funeral director means that when someone loses a loved one, I’m able to be an adviser, organiser, administrator and supporter, making sure that this incredibly difficult time is as easy as possible for those left behind,” says Lim. “Holding a funeral is an incredibly important step in the grief journey and it is a privilege to help create the perfect goodbye so that families can rest assured that their loved one is honoured and cared for all the way.” Davis Funeral Services has been honouring lives of loved ones for generations as they support the grieved family every step of the way. Dale points out that a lot of the stress associated with funerals is the unknown. “Not knowing what a recently deceased family member would have liked at their funeral can be upsetting and confusing. The relief we see in people when they find out that the deceased family member had preplanned their funeral with us, is immense. It allows families to focus on spending time together and with friends, sharing stories

and celebrating the life of the departed loved one,” says Dale. Swee Han and Dale both agree that one of the most important things that the caring and experienced team at Davis Funerals do offer is choice. “This allows each funeral to be as individual as the person it’s being held for. Everything can be personalised, from the venue to the music, flowers, colours and service sheets. We even offer a hand-painted casket. There are so many options available – making it easy for anyone to thoughtfully preplan their own funeral” says Swee. “We always have a good supply of biscuits and a tea or coffee on the boil so feel free to pop in for a chat.” Davis Funerals, 2A Udys Road, Pakuranga. CRIME

Man charged with Zhong’s murder By CHRIS HARROWELL

P

olice have arrested and charged a man with murder following the violent killing of east Auckland woman Elizabeth (Ying) Zhong. Zhong, 55, was found dead inside her vehicle on November 28 last year. Her Land Rover had been parked in Roadley Avenue, Sunnyhills, a short distance from her three-storey Suzetta Place home. The last confirmed sighting of the businesswoman was at about 4.30pm on November 27. On February 12 Counties Manukau Police publicly announced the arrest of a 47-year-old man in relation to Zhong’s death. He appeared in the Manukau District Court the same day. A court charging document seen by the Times states police believe the man killed Zhong in Sunnyhills between November 27 and November 28 last year. His occupation was not stated on the document. News media reported the man was granted name suppression during his court appearance. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear next at the Auckland High Court on March 10. Detective inspector Shaun Vickers led the inquiry into Zhong’s killing,

News bites MOTORCYCLIST DIES IN PAKURANGA Police have confirmed one person has died following a crash in Pakuranga on Sunday morning. The motorcyclist died at the scene. Emergency services were alerted to the crash at the intersection of Pakuranga Road and Ti Rakau Drive at around 7:56am. Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

named Operated Attina. “We know the community expected police to get on with the investigation and bring about justice for Elizabeth,” Vickers says. “From the outset of this investigation, the team of detectives working on Operation Attina have worked diligently to bring about a result in this case. We hope this will bring some reassurance to the community and Elizabeth’s family.” Following Zhong’s death, police publicly appealed for sightings of her Land Rover in the days leading up to

her disappearance. Investigators conducted an area canvas and spoke to her family, friends, and associates. Members of a specialist police forensics team wearing white hazmat-style suits were seen working in what appeared to be her property’s kitchen as an armed officer stood guard in the driveway. Police have described Zhong’s family as being “devastated” by her death. She was the director of the company Digital Post Limited, which is based in Epsom, central Auckland.

Former St Kentigern College schoolboy Finn Allen has attracted a lot of attention with a sensational campaign for the Wellington Firebirds in his first Super Smash Twenty20 season with the team. Media commentators believe Allen, 21, has put himself in contention for a possible call-up for the Black Caps’ T20 match against Australia next week (more, p20).

SWIMMER SAFE

Police were called to Bucklands Beach on Sunday (February 7) after a report a swimmer was in trouble. A swimmer was reported to be in difficulty in the water at Bucklands Beach. Police confirmed the first call came

through at 6.11pm on Sunday. “On arrival to the area, the Police Maritime Unit observed the male swimmer exiting the water after being assisted by a member of the public,” police said. “There is no report of him requiring hospitalisation, though he was spoken to by police at the time following the incident.”

CROQUET SINGLES

Retirement is not a time to stop being physically active, says Ken Holmes, spokesperson for Bruce McLaren Villages, part of Ryman Healthcare which sponsors the Annual Howick Croquet Club’s regional singles tournament. Howick Croquet held their 2021 Auckland-wide Ryman singles challenge over the weekend, February 6 and 7 which attracted 24 experienced players aged over 65 to show their ability at golf croquet. All matches were very competitive, with group winners being Scott Martins (Pukekohe), Neal Henderson (Pakuranga), Ngaire Newdick (Howick) and Roger Kennedy (Manurewa). Group runners-up were Roger Adamson (Howick), Rob Bawden (Pakuranga), Pam Shoebridge (Pakuranga) and Jill Groenestein (Howick).

Comedic stage battle all over prized property nyone who’s ever felt an intense desire to possess a particular property will be able to relate to the emotions at the centre of Howick Little Theatre’s first production for 2021. Entitled The House, the play is written by Brian Parks and directed by Ashton Brown. It tells the story of the Redmonds, a couple who love their house possibly a little too much. They sell the home to a younger couple, who have plans for it that the Redmonds disagree with. When the two couples meet at the house to exchange keys and celebrate with a glass of bubbly, things don’t go as planned. The Redmonds are played by actors Catherine Maunsell and Stephen Diver, with the younger couple played by Izzy Renton and James Calverley. The play is a return to Howick Little Theatre for Brown, who appeared on stage in its 2020 production of Dead Simple. He grew up in Howick, acted at the theatre for the first time at age 13, and directs middle school drama productions at Saint Kentigern College in Pakuranga. Brown says The House is set in a nice suburban

home in an unspecified part of the United States and all the action takes place in the living room. When the two couples meet, their interaction is friendly, but “those masks start to slip and it unravels into an absolutely chaotic and offensive war of words”, he says. “It’s very funny but these aren’t the nicest people. “Once that becomes clearer the journey gets a lot darker and a lot funnier.” Brown says the production’s cast has to use the script’s dialogue to create momentum for the audience. “Like all conversations it builds and drops and then builds again. “We had to find that rhythm ourselves because there are no scene changes. “When I go to a play if there is a moment I’m not enjoying, the scene will change and it almost refreshes your experience of the show. “When you don’t have that option it really makes it more about the dialogue

and the focus is on the actors.” Brown says the play will appeal to anyone who enjoys character-driven comedy. “It’s four people in a room and they’re trapped in a circumstance. “Once the facade comes down, reality sets in. “It’s definitely for people who are very open-minded in terms of comedy. “It might make people cringe as much as it makes them laugh. “It has elements of stuff like the British version of [TV show] The Office, in that you don’t know if you’re laughing or wholly uncomfortable with the situation.” ➤ The House ➤ Directed by Ashton Brown ➤ Howick Little Theatre, Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga ➤ Season: February 27 to March 20 ➤ www.hlt.org.nz

After-hours service essential MP for Botany

Happy New Year! While the holidays may seem a dim and distant memory now, I trust that you had a wonderful break with your family and friends. Delivering better health services to east Auckland is a significant issue and will remain high on my list. Late last year my colleague Simeon Brown and I launched a petition to save the after-hours service at East Care. Unfortunately, two years ago Counties Manukau DHB cut funding for the overnight service, meaning East Care has had to run this service at a loss. This, coupled with staffing challenges, forced East Care into a position where they could not continue operating overnight. Simeon and I launched a petition to ask Counties Manukau DHB to urgently step in to help keep this 24/7 service going for our community. We ended up with an incredible 10,454 people signing the petition in a very short time before Christmas, making this is one of the most significant local petitions in the country. I recently presented this petition to the DHB Board

Christopher Luxon

and spoke about how East Care’s 24/7 service was a valued part of the East Auckland community and how the Middlemore Hospital Emergency Department was overwhelmed with a sub-optimal customer experience. Sadly, the bottom line is that the board said they would not support the service due to funding pressures and their belief that Middlemore can easily accommodate the East Care urgent care customers. The confusing thing is Middlemore Hospital has even acknowledged how stretched their Emergency Department is with a statement released earlier this year requesting people not to come unless needing emergency care. This decision is deeply disappointing and gutting to me, Simeon Brown and no doubt all of you. I went on to raise the broader opportunity of building a properly resourced Botany Super Clinic so that the 130,000 east Aucklanders do not have to travel outside the area. Imagine if we could have more basic health care

services like rehab, spirometry, ophthalmology, oncology, day surgery, expanded specialist units and an upgraded birthing unit all available in east Auckland. The board, while interested in building a broader Super Clinic strategy for the region, gave no commitments or deadlines for an upgraded Botany Super Clinic. We discussed the need for the board to properly engage and hear the concerns of east Auckland residents and the board chair proposed that he would like to hold a board meeting in Botany in the coming months. While that is a start, Simeon and I think a public meeting would also be helpful so the DHB could outline their vision of delivering improved health services to the residents of east Auckland. We will keep you informed of progress on this. Until next time, have a great week. Christopher Luxon MP for Botany

Bucklands Beach Yacht Club was officially formed back in 1949 by a few pioneering sailors looking for a base for their racing, although sailing and racing started off Bucklands Beach back in the early thirties. The families in those days were not necessarily financially privileged but rather inspired to be creative and ingenious in supplying themselves a sea worthy craft for family and neighbourhood enjoyment. This fellowship still flourishes and has rubbed off through the generations of many sailors who sail from Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. Fast forward to now, and the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club is a great family club that provides a diverse range of boating and social interests. The club has its own marina and haul out facilities with a hardstand enabling members to perform maintenance on their own vessels. Members enjoy a full calendar of boating and social events, including cruising to various destinations in the Hauraki Gulf. The social activities include the famous brunch on the Spit, where the top half of the dress is formal to go with casual down

There is no time like now to touch up the exterior and the interior of your home.

Before autumn sets in, a fresh coat of paint with some tender loving care, will add to your home value and appeal. As the to-do list around the home builds up, refreshing the interior and exterior becomes a top priority. Naturally, a fresh coat of paint is often the way to go. But with summer being the prime time for recreation, homeowners who prefer to enjoy their spare time relaxing, may be better off leaving their painting jobs to the experts from East Auckland Painting Ltd. Debbie and Greg Mustill employ an experienced team whose skill and knowledge are second to none. They offer a diverse painting service ranging from simple repaints of single rooms through to full interior or exterior work including doors, windowsills, surfeits and roofs. “In today’s working family scenario it so easy to let maintenance slide,” says Greg. “Unfortunately, when paintwork deteriorates it can downgrade the value of a home, and if you’re thinking of selling it’s a turn-off to buyers. Peeling or grubby paint can make people wonder if there are bigger maintenance issues at stake. Also it is much more effective to keep on top of small jobs than put off maintenance until suddenly one is confronted by a big and costly bill to put things right.” Debbie says now is the ideal time for painting houses, fences, garages and other buildings. “We tackle every job, no matter how big or small, with the same thorough professionalism, starting with proper surface preparation and

undercoating then carrying through to the final topcoat and finish. Importantly, we don’t keep our customers waiting,” she says. As an added bonus for customers, East Auckland Painting Ltd has a great all-year round special and is offering FREE pre-paint washing with all exterior repaints (conditions apply). “In fact, now’s a good time to plan ahead and take advantage of this special,” says Debbie. As always before painting, Debbie and Greg consult thoroughly with clients as to colour, the type of paint most suited to the job and the number of coats required. “We use all major paint brands, such as Wattyl, Dulux and Resene, and work with oil and water-based paints. We also advise on the correct sheen to use as this can make a big difference in high traffic areas, wet rooms, or where exterior walls are exposed to the worst of the elements.” All East Auckland Painting Ltd., clients’ receive an on-site consultation and FREE, written, no-obligation quote so there are no surprises. “Whether we are painting a ceiling, refreshing interior rooms or tackling a full exterior repaint, we take pride in our workmanship,” they say. COMMUNITY

Residents fighting to stop sale of public reserves By CHRIS HARROWELL

I

rate residents are battling to stop the proposed sale of four east Auckland public reserves. Auckland Council wants to dispose of green spaces it owns at 111R Golfland Drive, 9R Fortyfoot Lane, 76R Aberfeldy Avenue, and 31 Aspiring Avenue/17R Hilltop Road. The Howick Local Board voted late last year to retain the reserves, but the council’s finance and performance committee overrode it and voted to put them up for sale. A lengthy legal process, which involves final signoff by the Government, must be worked through before that can happen. The move is part of an effort by the council to raise money through its emergency budget, which requires $224 million to be realised from “asset recycling”. Opposing the sale also are Howick ward councillors Sharon Stewart and Paul Young, and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Botany MP Christopher Luxon. Determined locals are also working to keep the reserves in public hands. Among them are Golflands residents Neil Pinkerton, Roger Schneiderman, and John Mooney,

and Sue Goldwater, who lives in Sunnyhills. They’re circulating a petition objecting to the proposed sale that’s so far been signed by people from more than 450 local households. “We’ve been doorknocking,” Mooney says. “A very high percentage of the neighbours agree with us.” They’re concerned the land could be used for high-density housing and say such a development would not be in keeping with the character of the existing neighbourhoods. “It’s a public reserve that’s used by our children and for recreation,” Schneiderman says of the park in Golfland Drive. “To take that away from people would be hugely disappointing. The council has to see that. “There’s enough traffic congestion here already with the schools [in Golflands] and it will cause people to be late for work.” Pinkerton says he wonders what the council will do next if it’s able to sell the reserves. “This is one thing now but how far does it go, and what else are they going to do after that? “Is it going to continue right through until every green space is gone? Where does it stop?”

S AR

Among the locals opposing the potential sale of public reserves in east Auckland are, from left, Neil Pinkerton, Sue Goldwater, Roger Schneiderman, and John Mooney. Times photo Chris Harrowell

Goldwater says selling the reserves will set a precedent around how the council can effectively raise money to cover a budget shortfall. She says housing intensification is happening “dramatically” across Auckland, including in her community. “One of the things we talked

about in our area is that it’s an Auckland-wide problem. “We are making a noise about it out east, but it’s going on all over Auckland. “We need to think about our city, how we want it to go forward, and whether we want green spaces. “People will say you just don’t want it [housing intensification]

in your backyard, but the council needs to think about the city and what are we doing to it. “We will pass it on to the next generation.” A spokesperson for Auckland Council says no date has yet been set to notify the public about the intention to dispose of the four public reserves.

ROADING

Councillor: Residents concerned by AT’s road works ‘overkill’ By CHRIS HARROWELL

A

n east Auckland elected representative says she’s heard from residents concerned about the “overkill” of road works and orange cones in the local community and the impact it’s having on traffic congestion. Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart is speaking out on the issue after Eastern Beach resident Alex Simich told the Times last month he couldn’t understand why Vivian Wilson Drive was being resurfaced when to his eyes it looked to be in perfect condition already. “It’s a mess [now] but it was good, it was 100 per cent before they started,” Simich said at the time. “They ripped the road up. What you see [with the new seal laid] is exactly the way it was, only black. “It’s a waste of money and you see it happening everywhere.” In response to Simich’s comments, Auckland Transport (AT) spokesman Mark Hannan said a short section of Vivian Wilson Drive from Bucklands Beach Road to Aylmer Court was included in AT’s 2021-21 resurfacing programme. The section had been examined by the organisation’s engineers and the work was needed to keep the surface waterproof and to main-

tain good skid resistance. AT’s budget for resurfacing works in the Howick Local Board area for the 2020-21 financial year is $3.8 million, Hannan said. “We can assure residents AT endeavours to maintain the road network to the appropriate standards and in the most cost-effective manner for residents and ratepayers.” The Times asked Stewart and her fellow Howick ward councillor Paul Young if they have concerns about ratepayers’ money being spent on road repairs or resurfacing in east Auckland. Stewart says locals have contacted her to share their views about

what they describe as the “overkill” of such work. Road maintenance is important

for the community’s mobility and to ensure safety for pedestrians and motorists, she says. “In this difficult time, however, when we have an [Auckland Council’s] emergency budget, it is imperative Auckland Transport prioritises which road maintenance they undertake due to costsaving measures. “Communication of road works early to the community will also help to alleviate any concerns residents in the area have and will help them to plan their journeys accordingly. “If there are concerns from the community with road resurfacing on roads that appear to be in good

condition, the community should contact their nearest local board or council-elected member to find out more information.” According to AT, road resurfacing and maintenance is scheduled to be carried out or has recently been completed on, numerous local roads. Among those being resurfaced are Middlefield Drive, Dannemora, Minerva Terrace, Howick, and Westview Court, Somerville. Those having maintenance work carried out are Amon Avenue and Barcaldine Road, and Maghera Drive, Dannemora, and Paparoa Road, Picton Street, and Water Macdonald Street, Howick.

Trolley derby fun GJ Gardner and Franklin Local Board, in conjunction with the Pohutukawa Coast Rotary Club, are running the 5th Maraetai Beachlands Trolley Derby on March 7 at Omana Regional Park, Maraetai, commencing at 10am. the park. As well as exciting racing culminating in the King of the Hill race, there is entertainment for the kids, pony rides clown show, face painting and bouncy castle. Grandad’s last wish M

y Grandad Bruce Woskett was a resident for the past four years of the Lansdowne Rest Home in Howick and peacefully passed away surrounded by family this month on February 1 aged 90. Grandad was also a resident at the Ambridge Rose rest home on Pakuranga Road with my Nana who sadly passed away four years ago. They had been together since they were 16, a beautiful love story. In his early years he used to be a truck driver and always had a love of trucks ever since. When my Dad was choosing songs for Grandad’s funeral, my Mum suggested we choose a truck song for one of them after his love of trucks. After trying for a while with no luck, I said ‘Come on Grandad, help us’. Straight away a song came up with a title along the lines of ‘Last ride home’ with a coffin on a truck. As fast as it came up, it disappeared and I said, “Grandad wants to go on a truck!” to which they said, “He always said he wanted to go on a truck!” Obviously it wasn’t the song he liked but it sure was a message from him. My Dad later found a truck song that suited perfectly. My husband works for Smith Cranes and we had taken a photo of a truck before Christmas with our children in front to show Grandad. I rang my husband and said, “No pressure, but pressure – Grandad wants to go on a truck! Are you able to make it happen?” Glen and his team were amazing organising a truck and spending the week getting it all ready and looking immaculate for Grandad. My brother even had Grandad’s name printed and it was put on the door as the operator. Last Friday (February 5) Grandad’s last wish came true – after a wonderful service, thankyou to Robert and his team at the Howick Funeral Home, Grandad had his last ride – on a truck, and what a truck it was. He would have absolutely loved it. My husband and brother drove

AN ISSUE WITH GRAMMAR

Shame on you. Getting grammar right these days is difficult enough without the Times not being careful enough, especially on the front page (Times, February 2 – Big mystery surrounds eels’ death’). Eels plural means death should be deaths.

A reader ➤ Editor’s note: Thank you for that however many newspapers view the collective as singular so death would be correct. Both work depending on which option you choose.

LOST DEMOCRACY

Up until recently, if the ratepayers objected to a proposal by their Council, the proposal could be challenged by a call for a referendum by the ratepayers.

playing the history of racial segregation. Racism was rife in Pukekohe and in pockets around the country during the segregation era. I wrote the book to raise awareness and correct the historical record with the hope that what, until recently, has been considered a taboo subject, will be taught in our schools. To move forward as a country, we must be willing to acknowledge past wrongs. For someone who professes to be keen on providing a balanced view of history, Mr Howard conspicuously omits the key message of the book: the preventable deaths of hundreds of Maori infants and children in Pukekohe as a result of the segregation they encountered. He is entitled to his own opinions, but he is not his own facts. As an apologist for racial segregation, he is attempting to rewrite the story. He is on the wrong side of history.

Robert Bartholomew, Flat Bush

PROMENADE AT HOWICK BEACH

It is such a shame when strolling by Howick Beach to have to walk in the road. I strongly believe we would enhance our lives if only cars were parked two meters further back from the beach and a nice walkway were constructed. At present, we must walk in the danger zone behind the parked cars. Why is that? So many other beaches have walkways where pedestrians can walk in safety.

Chris Wordsworth, Cockle Bay

Grandad on his last journey and they mentioned the many toots they got from drivers passing by. We also heard of many people in Howick saying they had seen the truck. Our family have a lovely history with Howick. My Nana’s father, who served in World War I and was a prison guard for the This democratic right has now been taken away by the Minister who did not like the outcome of these challenges as in most cases the proposal by the said council was overturned at the ballot box. How many more democratic rights are we going to have taken from us?

Arthur Moore DSM, Pakuranga

OUR ANTHEM IS JUST FINE

When the author of the lyrics of God Defend New Zealand wrote these words, he obviously did so out of love and respect for his country. Are we going to have every Tom, Dick and Harry changing words that might, for some obscure reason, offend them (Times, January 19, “Our anthem needs a tweak”)? What on earth is wrong with

Auckland prison, used to cycle from Mt Eden to Howick to start his vegetable garden before moving to Howick. After the funeral, all the family went for a drink at the Howick RSA and one of my Dad’s cousins told of remembering going to the RSA as a young boy with his father (my Nana’s brother) who is “men”? Now don’t be silly Milton Everson. The world is already full of dissension. Why try and create more? It’s just non-sensical.

Maryke Ponse, Cockle Bay

RACIAL SEGREGATION VERY REAL

David Howard made several claims about my book, No Maori Allowed (Times, August 26) including the suggestion that my description of racism in Pukekohe was exaggerated. Claim #1. “There was no enforced racial separation in education.” False. Beginning in 1952, Pukekohe became the site of the only racially-segregated Maori school in the history of New Zealand. This is based on records from the National Archives and includes documents from the Education Ministry and

the school itself. It is indisputable. Claim #2. “Maori children were free to attend the other schools if their parents wished.” Not in Pukekohe. Again, this is not open to interpretation. It is a fact. Claim #3. “As for bars refusing to serve alcohol, I’m sceptical.” Government records, firsthand accounts, dozens of press reports from the period, and statements from a variety of public officials – all contradict this assertion. The refusal to serve Maori alcohol was not only a common practice in Pukekohe, it was also noted by numerous government agencies in pockets across the nation. Mr Howard makes several other unfounded assertions and attempts to ‘blame the victim’ for the unhygienic conditions Maori encountered. He does a disservice by down-

Ref the article on page 3 of the Times, February 2, (Campaign for new skate park ramps up), there’s a far more urgent need in Lloyd Elsmore Park than a skate park do-up. The paths leading between the swimming pool and the Howick Historical Village are urgently in need of refurbishing before somebody breaks bones on them while avoiding the cracks and broken surface. Far more people walk in the park than skate, including many chronically-enhanced, like me!

Joan Gilchrist, Sunnyhills

‘I’M NOT MOVING THE BERM’

Ref. Article by Adele White (Times, Dec 22). Who has decided that I should mow the grass berm that does not belong to me. This is a liberty following the history below. HISTORY: In the past I foolishly mowed the whole corner berm and the bagged cuttings were picked up by the council. Then without warning the bags were ripped open by the refuse collector and tossed to one side making them useless. Remember, I paid for the bags, used my mower, my petrol, my time. You can now realise why I refuse to cut the berm. I am far from being alone with this feeling of disgust. Look around the area uncut berms, vegetables planted on them and various other growth appearing. I am in my 80s and this grass area does not belong to me and is not my responsibility.

rofessional golfer Ryan Fox, of Beachlands, is celebrating a strong finish at the Saudi International European Tour event in Saudi Arabia where he tied for sixth. Fox, 34, reportedly earned around $133,000 (€79,422.12) tying with Tyrell Hatton (England), Rasmus Højgaard (Denmark) and Viktor Hovland (Norway). 2020 Masters Tournament winner Dustin Johnson won

the event for the second time in three years. He shot a two-under 68 in the final round on Sunday to finish four shots behind Johnson. Fox had shared the lead after the second round after securing two consecutive 65s, but he slipped down the leaderboard with a one-over 71 in the Ryan Fox had shared the lead after the second round after shooting two consecutive 65s. A little bit of what if on the weekend as I felt like I played much better than I scored. “Nice to finish the trip on a good note before my two weeks of quarantine. “Also very happy to be about to get on a plane home.”

COMMENT

Allen’s star shines bright M

uch as I admire Martin Guptill, I don’t believe his dismal form this summer warrants him retaining his Black Caps T20 opening spot for the series against Australia ahead of 21-yearold former St Kentigern College pupil Finn Allen. An attacking batsman who scored a magnificent unbeaten 237 against the West Indies in Wellington during the 2015 ODI World Cup, Guptill is also an exceptionally gifted fieldsman. At 34, however, age and injury are beginning to take its toll on a man who failed to reach double figures in three of his last four Super Smash matches for the Auckland Aces. Before that he totalled just 46 in three T20 innings against Pakistan. Contrast that form with the hardhitting Allen’s 56.88 Super Smash average. Allen scored 512 runs at a strike rate of 193 and took just 19 balls to score one of his 50s. With Guptill missing his last two matches for the Aces with a hamstring injury, he will need to pass a fitness test to retain his place against standby Allen whose move to Wellington was a major loss for Auckland.

Agnew’s Angle

Left to right: Who would have predicted Luna Rossa (above) would lead Ineos Team UK 4-0 in the best of 13 Prada Cup America’s Cup final?; Ex St Kents student Finn Allen scored 512 runs at a strike rate of 193 and took just 19 balls to score one of his 50s.

With South African-born Devon Conway’s bat also blazing, the Wellington Firebirds have been an exciting batting side. Auckland’s Glenn Phillips is another fast scorer, as is Colin Munro who wasn’t selected despite his outstanding form for the Perth Scorchers. The squad is: Kane Williamson (c), Hamish Bennett. Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Martin Guptill, Kyle Jamieson, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodi, Tim

Southee. The five-match series against Australia starts at Christchurch’s Hagley Park on February 22. Meanwhile, who would have predicted Luna Rossa would lead Ineos Team UK 4-0 in the best of 13 Prada Cup America’s Cup final? Or that aggressive Jimmy Spithill would outwit Sir Ben Ainslie at every start? With mastery of the start so important the Italian entry has been able to dictate throughout despite the fact Ineos Team UK were unbeaten in the round robin thus earning

strong favouritism for the final. However Luna Rossa gained on every mark, were superior in the tacking duel and looked more stable with Ainslie’s yacht almost capsizing on one occasion. The racing experience gained by the challengers should give the eventual winner a huge advantage against Team New Zealand’s crew when they challenge for the America’s Cup. Mastering the start is something the otherwise brilliant Peter Burling has yet to master.

Finally, at last New Zealand has found an exciting middle-distance runner to continue Nick Willis’ legacy. In finishing third in the New Balance meeting in Staten Island, New York, Tauranga’s Sam Tanner clocked 3:34.72 to better seventh placed Willis’ NZ indoor record of 3:35.8s set in Birmingham 10 years ago. Tanner is only 20. Another who would have got tremendous satisfaction from his win over South Canterbury’s world shot put champion Tom Walsh was Takapuna’s Jack Gill who threw 21.52m in the Porritt Classic in Hamilton. A former multiple world age group champion and record-holder, Gill won by 7cm. It is the kind of competition both will relish leading up to the Tokyo Olympics if they are not postponed once more. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author.

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
