CONFLICT OVER USE OF COMMUNITY BUILDING By CHRIS HARROWELL

T

here’s strong disagreement over how a historic east Auckland community asset should be managed. In the first half of 2020, the Howick War Memorial building, formerly known as the Howick Information Centre, closed along with most other Auckland Council facilities when New Zealand went into a Covid-19 lockdown.

In September the Howick Local Board publicly called for expressions of interest from groups keen to be involved with running the Picton Street facility, which is yet to reopen. A recommendation put to the board at its December business meeting advised it to approve the Howick Village Association (HVA) “as the preferred applicant at this stage” to manage the building, for several reasons.

They included that the association is well-established and has strong organisational and financial capability to manage a community facility, among others. However, when the board arrived at that item during its meeting, member David Collings moved an amendment to the recommendation, which was seconded by member Katrina Bungard. Collings’ proposed change gave approval to council officers to talk

to multiple groups about the prospect of working together “for the overall benefit of the Howick community” and report back to the board in February next year. The groups include the HVA as well as applicants such as the Manukau East Council of Social Services (MECOSS), OneAfrica Incorporated, Uxbridge Community Projects Incorporated, Howick Tourism and the Pakuranga Chinese Association, among others.

Collings declared an interest in MECOSS to his board colleagues. He said he understood council staff wanting to have one head group in charge of the building but he disagreed with that approach as “it makes it harder for individual groups to work together” if there’s one primary tenant. “They are always on the back foot and it doesn’t matter who they are. ➤ Turn to page 3

he Auckland Brit and Euro Classic Car Show scheduled for early next year has been cancelled. Organising committee chairman Rev Dr Richard Waugh made the announcement yesterday afternoon. “The organising committee of the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show regrettably informs you that the show planned for Sunday March 6, 2022, has been cancelled. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly,” he said. “Unfortunately, the B&E is unable to go ahead under the current Covid Protection Framework (CPF), unless the ‘traffic-light’ setting is at green. “With Auckland currently at red, soon to go to orange, the organisers face ongoing uncertainty. This means we are not able to commit to expenses, nor can we then expect to be able to put on the show we want in the time remaining. “It is highly unlikely that a decision by the Government to change Auckland City’s setting (to green) will occur in good time for the show to proceed. Furthermore, the emergence of the Omicron variant creates further doubt.” Waugh said in arriving at their decision, they also considered the degree of additional work required by their volunteers at green too onerous to continue to deliver the Southern Hemisphere’s largest free British & European Classic Car

It’s not yet known when the Howick War Memorial building – aka the Howick Information Centre – in Picton Street will reopen to the community; Below: Members of the Howick Local Board disagreed over the best way for the building to be managed. Times photo Wayne Martin/supplied

COUNCIL

FRUSTRATION AT BOARD VOTE ➤ Continued from page 1 “If there’s a head group it feels like they’re taking control. “I would like to see different groups in there working in the interest of the community.” Board deputy chairman John Spiller spoke against Collings’ amendment. Spiller said the building has been shut for 20 months and the board’s been working for nearly a year to get an outcome for it. “The council said they need a legal entity to enter into an arrangement and that already exists with the HVA. “It could take another six months to cobble together a legal entity with eight other groups.” Board chairperson Adele White also spoke against Collings’ amendment. “I was originally in favour of applicants jointly occupying the building,” she said. “However I have accepted that the group, the HVA, have stated they will be welcoming others to use the facility. “That is the better option and it gives the whole nine applicants the opportunity to utilise the building, and in fact others that didn’t get to apply.” Voting for Collings’ amendment were himself and board members Bungard, Bo Burns, Bruce Kendall, Mike Turinsky and Bob Wichman. Members White, Spiller, and Peter

person and deputy chairperson of MECOSS respectively and both serve on its executive committee. Scott says he’s talked to a council officer and pointed out the board’s decision to have multiple groups work together to manage the building may delay its reopening. “Our intention right from the outset, as quickly as possible, was to have that facility open for community use. “One of the issues is what is going to be the legal entity that is going to sign this documentation [to manage the building]? “If they’re looking at an incorporated society of nine organisations I would imagine all those will have to go back and get legal clearance and that’s going to be a prolonged

Young opposed the amendment, which was carried by six votes to three. The board then passed the full motion which included Collings’ amendment. Following the meeting, HVA chairman Ken Scott told the Times the association is disappointed with Collings’ amendment and the board’s decision to pursue the option of having multiple groups work together to manage the building. Scott says the amendment is additionally disappointing given Collings’ and Bungard’s ties to MECOSS, which is one of the organisations included in the amendment and a competing applicant to manage the building. Collings and Bungard are chair-

period of time. “The concern we have is this could drag out for some time to come before the public get access to that building. “It’s been over two years already.” Scott’s sentiment is shared by fellow HVA executive committee member Gerald Patterson, who says he’s “extremely disappointed” with the board’s vote on the matter. Patterson’s comments are his personal opinions and not made on behalf of the HVA. He says the HVA’s application to manage the facility was the strongest and was well supported. “I believe there’s a risk the building will carry on being closed until this gets sorted out. “You’ve only got to look at the state of the old [Howick] library building and how that’s been left unused. “I would like to think the board could revisit their decision.” Collings says he understands Scott’s disappointment, but the original recommendation put to the board wasn’t going to pass as a number of members had indicated before the meeting they didn’t support it. “Our [his and Bungard’s] involvement had no bearing on the outcome of the vote, as with neither of us included there were four members of the board that did not support the recommendation, as obviously it would have passed

otherwise. “I don’t feel Katrina or myself have any conflict of interest as neither of us have any pecuniary interest in any matters relating to MECOSS. “We are volunteers giving our time freely and are proud to work amongst a fine group of people that do much within the community.” Bungard says since she was elected to the board in 2013, its members have wanted the building to serve as a mixed-use community hub utilised by a variety of groups in the Howick ward. “The majority of the board had concerns over granting the lease to one particular group as we felt, over time, the idea of a facility used by multiple groups working together as a community hub may be lost, with one group assuming possession rights. “We voted on a motion that allowed for all the groups that put forward applications to be contacted to initiate discussions on how such a community hub may be run collectively. “I do not believe I have a conflict of interest on this vote as I was certainly not advocating for any particular group to assume the rights to the lease. Quite the contrary.” White says she’s unable to comment on the matter as the board “is now awaiting further information before a decision is made” on the building’s management.

Tend Health buys Pakuranga Medical Centre

P

akuranga Medical Centre has been sold. Tend Health – a primary healthcare provider which offers GP services online and in-clinic – has purchased of two major medical centres – Auckland’s Symonds Street Medical Centre and Pakuranga Medical Centre. It says it is part of its strategy to build access to “high quality inperson clinical care, integrated with Tend’s smart technology”. Tend co-CEO Cecilia Robinson says the two clinics see the company grow its fully integrated, in-person and online primary healthcare service. “Symonds Street and Pakuranga Medical Centres are important milestones for Tend as we work toward our goal of making New Zealanders the healthiest people in the world through improving access to high-quality clinical care with the help of world class technology,” says Robinson. The acquisition of the two clinics follows Tend Health’s recent capital raise, which supports the company to continue acquiring medical practices

across Auckland and throughout the country and grow Tend’s physical footprint nationally. “Our GP workforce is ageing and many practice owners are struggling with succession planning as they approach retirement, with a shrinking pool of potential general practitioners willing or able to buy-in. We believe we can be part of the solution to this problem and are actively seeking further opportunities throughout the country as we continue on our growth journey,” says Robinson. Symonds Street Medical Centre has been fully refurbished and reopens as a brand new Tend Medical Centre in early December. Centrally located near two major university campuses, the clinic will serve a significant portion of inner-city Auckland residents as a primary care and immigration medical services provider with onsite X-ray facilities. “Symonds Street Medical Centre complements Tend’s existing clinic in Kingsland and the two clinics will work together to offer more options

for Aucklanders to see a doctor when they need to and how they want to,” says Robinson. “The population of central Auckland is growing, and it is a diverse population that is not currently well served with nearly 50,000 people not enrolled with any general practitioner in the Auckland District Health Board region. “The acquisition of the Symonds Street Clinic will allow Tend to offer those living in central Auckland easier access to innovative primary healthcare on their terms.” Complementing Tend’s existing in-person clinics in Kingsland and in the central city, the Pakuranga Medical Centre is a modern, full-service clinic serving a large area of east Auckland. Following its acquisition, the Tend team will work to integrate the Pakuranga Medical Centre in 2022 with the Tend platform as its east Auckland medical hub. One of the former owners of

local artist has impressed morning walkers with her Chorus cabinet artwork. Pakuranga-based Laura Young, 25, has recently painted the Chorus box by the roundabout on Pigeon Mountain Road in Howick. Her artwork is labelled ‘Never a Dull Day with a Gull’, inspired by the infamous Finding Nemo scene with the seagulls squawking “Mine!

Mine! Mine!” The concept was then put into a Half Moon Bay context, Young says, with the bay behind the seagulls. The fun personalities of the declining native Red Billed Gull hanging out “creates a sense of community and memorable times”. Young has been into art since she was a child. “It’s gone into my adult life,” she says. “I do it quite often. It’s my downtime, my relaxation.” She graduated in visual communication design at Massey

University. “I’m a designer,” she says. “I’m always constantly being creative and using that side of me.” Her art style, she says, is fun, has personality and is more on the ‘cuter’ side. She’s also varied the kind of medium she uses – from acrylics to watercolour. “I enjoy painting animals,” Young says. “I was really excited for the Chorus opportunity and to make a positive impact for the community and to do my first proper large mural. I was quite overwhelmed by how many people were supporting me that weekend. [I received] A lot of supportive honks and compliments.”

Honouring and Celebrating Life

the Pakuranga Medical Centre GP, Eileen Sables, says, “We are very excited to work with the Tend team over the coming years to build the future of primary healthcare in this country and to continue to serve the local Pakuranga community. “We were impressed by their vision and technological capabilities to deliver high quality primary healthcare services that make it easier and more convenient for people to access a GP. Tend’s also about utilising technology to reduce admin so we can spend more time with our patients – in-person or online.” Tend was founded in 2020 by Cecilia and James Robinson, the founders of My Food Bag, alongside Harvard-educated and public health expert Dr Mataroria Lyndon and Pushpay’s former tech executive Josh Robb. Typical conditions treated include mental health, women’s health, sexual health, pediatrics and repeat prescriptions.

Goodman Property Trust, New Zealand’s leading warehouse and logistics space provider which owns Highbrook Business Park, has conditionally acquired the Sky Network Television (SKT) Campus in Mt Wellington for $56 million. The purchase includes adjoining properties at 10-16 Panorama Road and 34 Leonard Road with a combined site area of 4.45 hectares. SKT is committing to a lease-back over a proportion of the 17,251 sqm facility. Goodman CEO John Dakin said the purchase of the Mt Wellington Campus complements its existing portfolio. “We expect the remaining space to lease quickly but, ultimately, these sites will be amalgamated and redeveloped into an urban logistics estate that maximises the value of the central Auckland location.” With settlement expected in March 2022, the acquisition remains conditional on further due diligence and Goodman board approval.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

HOME ALONE, NO MORE By REV BRETT JONES

A

bout this time of year, the great debate starts. What is the greatest Christmas movie of all time? There are plenty of contenders with some of them even being actual Christmas movies. There are the old classics like Miracle On 34th Street or White Christmas. Or the new classics like The Grinch or Elf. But then there are those movies whose claim to Christmas fame seems to be that they happen at Christmas rather than being about Christmas like Die Hard, Love Actually or Home Alone. This year Home Alone stands out as one of those movies with a particular 2021 echo. Not that any of us have actually had the opportunity to be on a flight to Paris, only to realise we left “Kevin” at home! It’s not because many parents have enjoyed the “peace on earth” moments of finally having their kids head back to school. Home alone has never been so good! It’s not because we all spent way too much time home alone, for many a testing experience of isolation. It’s not because family reunions are still a way off for some, with New Zealand still home alone when it comes to international

travel. It’s not even because we shared our own “KEVIN” moment when we realised we were headed back to lockdown. It’s because this year many of us will share precious moments of reconnection with family and friends as the country opens up. That moment of family reconnection in the original Home Alone movie sits at the centre of human experience. We were made for connection. It’s one of the reasons why lockdowns are so difficult for us. We were made for connection with each other. But the greatest Christmas story of all time (before we even had the word) makes the same point about connection. We were made for connection with God. Now it’s not that God had his own “Kevin” moment and realised he had left humanity home alone. God has pursued us throughout the course of history. The Judeo Christian origin account found in Genesis paints a picture of intimate connection between God and humanity that is only broken when humanity decides to go its own way. We’ve been hiding ever since. The stories of the Jewish Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all speak to this pursuit of humanity. Jacob, on the run, in

the wake of dysfunctional parental relationships and a sibling rivalry that started in the womb, encounters the pursuing God who promises, 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go… (Genesis 28:15). This is the central promise of the Bible: I am with you, I will never leave you, you don’t have to do this, alone. The Bible throws out a big hint that this God is going to do something unique in Isaiah 7:14:

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Immanuel, literally ‘God with us.’ It’s a long wait, nearly 800 years between these words of the prophet Isaiah and the arrival of Jesus. But the wait is over. The Christmas story is a story of reconnection with its own Home Alone moment. Except, there’s a reversal. It’s Jesus who embraces the home alone experience that

we might be reconnected with God. It’s Jesus who embraces the vulnerability of coming to us as a baby, born into a low-status family in a nation struggling under the colonising influence of the Roman empire. It’s Jesus who lives his early life as a refugee escaping Herod’s attempts to procure a political assassination. It’s Jesus who becomes flesh and blood and moves into the neighbourhood. So that we never need to be home alone again. This Christmas you are invited to join with thousands of Christians across the Howick Ward who will be living out the reality of connection with each other and God as they gather for Christmas services. Some will be gathering online, others in-person, but however the connection is being made, you are welcome. That each one of us might not be home alone this Christmas. ➤ Rev Brett Jones is pastor to Cession Community and part of the East Auckland Ministers Association. East Auckland Ministers Association includes over 70 churches in the wider Howick area. This Christmas, Howick churches are looking forward to gathering in-person and online. You’re welcome to join us.

Sink Skin is the People’s Choice T

he People’s Choice artwork for the 15th Estuary Art & Ecology Awards was ‘Sink Skin’, by artist Alby Yap. The award is proudly sponsored by the Rice Family Partnership who recognise the importance of the Estuary Art & Ecology Awards in bringing awareness of the damage to the estuary caused by urbanisation and development.

This year the award was late in presentation because of the Auckland Covid-19 lockdown. ‘Sink Skin’, the selected artwork, comprised an enamelled domestic sink, draped with latex, talc and rust. The artistic concept, described by Alby, was that of “the enamelled metal basin being converted into plasticity, rendering the unloved and overlooked object surprisingly

fleshy, sensual and vulnerable, a little reminder of mortality”. In making the award Wally Rice said, “It is always good to see so many creative entries wellsupported by public votes which resulted in a tight contest amongst the participants.” Rice congratulated Alby and said he enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about Alby’s work and aspirations.

Covid-19 has not deterred east Auckland’s community radio station from broadcasting and having its annual Christmas (socially-distanced) get-together. With the sun shining outside the studio, there was plenty of merriment going on as every-

one caught up with one another, including the 30+ volunteer DJs, without forgetting social distancing protocols. It’s good for local people to hear familiar and friendly voices on the airwaves. East FM can also be heard at www.eastfm.nz.

local company is continuing its quest to teach children code through their upcoming hybrid robot and established online game. Pakuranga-based Kai’s Education was founded with the aim of merging the physical and virtual worlds to become an ‘interactive learning playground’ with the goal to ‘nurture an interest for coding in children’, an aim that is the focus of their robot KaiBot and

web-based game Kainundrum. “Teaching kids to code opens up a lot of avenues for them,” Kai’s Education CEO Bruce Jackson says. “I’ve always had a passion for it.” The KaiBot is a coding robot that “creates a rich and engaging way to teach and learn coding”. It is aimed at parents and teachers, combines physical and virtual activity and is set to be released in April of next year. The physical comes in the form of the robot and its deck of playing

cards and lay-out tiles that comes with it. The virtual is in the form of the free multiplayer game, Kainundrum. Kainundrum is free-to-play and involves battling friends as robots – from solving puzzles to completing weekly challenges. The KaiBot, when released, will be able to connect virtually to Kainundrum and participate. “You can build your own game and code your robot,” Kai’s education manager Ronel Schodt says,

Merry Christmas and season’s greetings

I

t’s been just over 12 months since I was elected the MP for Botany and just a few weeks ago I became the Leader of the National Party. I’m humbled to have received so many messages of support and encouragement and I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who has sent me a note or come up to see me out and about in the community. It has been an incredible privilege to represent you over the last year. As I’ve said, I will be no less dedicated to our communities and my team will be just as accessible and available as ever. By working together, we have managed to secure some great wins for Botany, like getting the Government to scrap their ridiculous $785 mil-

lion cycle bridge idea and reprioritise funding towards the Eastern Busway. New Zealanders have done it extremely tough this year under the impacts of Covid-19 and under a complacent and incompetent Labour Government. There will be empty seats around the Christmas dinner table because a million missing Kiwis won’t be able to get home thanks to our broken MIQ system. Aucklanders have got podium fatigue and, after 15 weeks in a “short and sharp” lockdown, we’ve had endless announcements of announcements and inconsistent rules and messages. The squeezed middle are being squeezed harder. Groceries, pet-

rol and other living costs are only getting more expensive, yet our wages aren’t keeping up, so people can’t get ahead and they ultimately end up with fewer choices and opportunities. Now more than ever, New Zealand needs a National Government with an ambitious, confident plan for the future, and the ability to actually deliver on its commitments. Under my leadership, National will be a government of action – unlike our current government of nice ideas and good intentions. The next National Government will create a more productive economy that lifts incomes so people have more choices to live the lives they want to lead. We

will build a world-class education system, we will reduce crime and keep our neighbourhoods safe, we will support our farmers to remain world leading, we will protect and enhance our environment and we will unleash enterprise and back small businesses. You’ll hear more about National’s vision and plans from me in the New Year but you can rest assured that while we will continue to hold the Labour Government to account for their wasteful spending and their inability to deliver, we will also be listening closely to Kiwis and developing the smart and practical policy to be a credible alternative government. I hope that you and your family get the genuine break that you

“or join in the online adventure with virtual robots. We would love to see parents join in and play with their kids.” The KaiBot, Schodt says, is all about mazes, puzzles, escape rooms and hide and seek games. “We want to give every kid in New Zealand and the rest of the world the chance to learn how to code,” Schodt says. “It’s super cool and very engaging for kids.” For more information on the KaiBot, visit https://kaisclan.ai/ main-kaibot-page/

VACCINATION

CRICKET

Cricket winds up for the year Saturday’s matches were the last of the club cricket for 2021. PREMIER MEN – JEFF CROWE CUP | ROUND 3 Howick Pakuranga 194/7 (L Winn 43*, D Young 43, D Winn 35) lost to East Coast Bays 200/5 (M Ross 73*, L Watson 41, S Langridge 31, R Schierhout 30) by five wickets. With victory over Howick Pakuranga at home, East Coast Bays picked up their first win of the summer. It was steady as she goes for Howick Pakuranga, batting first at Windsor Park. Liam Winn (43*), Daniel Young (43) and David Winn (35) were the best of the Alpaca batters, but little came easy as a committed Bays attack stuck to their task. All six of the host’s bowlers picked up a wicket as the visitors scraped their way to 194/7 from their 50 overs. Despite starts by Seb Langridge (31) and Ryan Schierhout (30), Bays response was a little shaky. At 95/4, the match was in the balance, only for debutant Luke Watson (41) and Michael Ross to put together an 89-run partnership to all but extinguish the Alpaca’s hopes of victory. Ross remained unbeaten when victory came in the 44th over, having hit a brisk 73 off 55 balls in a knock that

included 6 fours and 4 sixes. BARFOOT AND THOMPSON ROYAL OAK PREMIER WOMEN Howick Pakuranga 115 (S Shahri 39, F Trussler 6-22) lost to Takapuna 116/4 (A Browning 38) by six wickets. It was a happy return to Hobsonville Domain for Takapuna, who go into the Christmas break as the only undefeated side in the Prichard Cup after a six-wicket win over Howick Pakuranga. Shahri Shahri played a lone hand at the top of the Howick Pakuranga order as the Ponies kept the pressure on the opener’s batting partners. Though there could have been further polish to the Takapuna performance, with a few chances going down, Finty Trussler picked up the outstanding figures of 6-22 to run through the Llama’s lower order. The hosts made relatively simple work of chasing 115; Anna Browning set the Ponies on their way with a patient 38 off 61 balls while Trussler remained unbeaten on 23. For Howick Pakuranga, Josie Penfold bagged a couple of Ponies’ wickets, but it wasn’t enough to stop the defending champions from taking a perfect 3-0 record into 2022. Auckland Cricket

Bruce McLaren residents bounce in for boosters W

ith more than 43 people getting vaccinated per hour, Bruce McLaren residents and staff rolled up their sleeves in droves on December 14 to be part of the booster vaccination roll out around the country. The Howick village was among the first of Ryman’s villages in the North Island to roll out their booster programme, with high participation rates. Beginning at 9:30am and working alongside Ryman staff, Pharmacy Care Group managed to vaccinate more than 300 residents and staff in seven hours. Serviced apartment resident Georginne Pratt was one of those submitting her consent form to receive the jab, saying she was doing her bit for the community. “I was happy to get my booster. I would like to protect those around me and those most vulnerable.” Getting her first vaccination in May, and her second dose in June, Georginne said getting vaccinated through Ryman had been a smooth process.

“The clinics are organised so well, it’s a really easy process and we don’t have to go very far,” Georginne said. While 296 residents and staff booked 10-minute slots for their vaccinations, clinical manager Riffy Jahan-Khan said more turned up than they had booked. Upon arrival, residents submitted signed consent forms and had

their details checked, before lining up to receive their shots. The whole process took around 20 minutes, including wait time afterwards. Another getting their booster on the day was village manager Chantelle Hand who credits her team for managing to run a successful clinic right before Christmas. “As soon as the government announced the booster shots, our team worked hard to make sure the clinic here was run as smoothly as possible. “Many thanks to our residents as well for a great turn out. Everyone played their part and did what they needed to do to help get it done,” Chantelle said. A bonus for the day – was how little she felt it! “Have you done it? Was that it? I didn’t feel a thing,” exclaimed Chantelle. Another clinic is planned this week which will see the remainder of staff, and any residents who couldn’t make the clinic get their booster shots.

Aspiring paralympian Gabby recognised for her courage By ZOE GARDEN

A

n inspirational east Aucklander is being recognised for her courage and determination in the face of adversity. Pakuranga College student Gabby Wright won the 2021 Attitude Awards. The event was held on Saturday [December 18]. Wright was just 12-years-old when she contracted a cold. When her immune system overreacted, it caused an inflammation of her spinal cord leading to a disorder called Transverse Myelitis (TM). The condition led to her being paralysed from the waist down. Her aspiration to be a Silver Fern netballer was dashed. “I was disappointed I couldn’t play netball again,” Wright, 17, says, “but I’ve always looked at the positives. I’ve changed my goals so I can still achieve things.” Wright has since taken on wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis. A year ago she found her ultimate passion in wheelchair racing for North Harbour Bay Athletics. She races in a special wheelchair in short distances down a track. “I love it,” she says. “It allows me

to be competitive. I really enjoy it.” Wright wishes to represent New Zealand in the Paralympics in wheelchair racing. She’s hopefully heading off to Sydney in February to get classified as a part of competing internationally - the pathway to the Paralympics and being eligible for selection. Wright currently holds New Zealand records in her classification (T54) for under-17 in 100m,

200m, and 400m distances in wheelchair racing. “I’m hoping to beat my records in Sydney,” Wright says. She also recently won a Young Sportsperson of the Year Award in the Athlete with a Disability category. Wright has worked with Auckland Netball to develop an adaptive form of the sport called No Limits Netball, an opportunity

for individuals with an intellectual disability to engage in the game. She also took an umpiring course. On June 14, 2019, she took to the netball courts to umpire her first competitive game. She is an active member of sport organisation Parafed Auckland, encouraging other people to get involved in sport and to find new ways of achieving their goals.

Wright says she’s really grateful to be nominated for the Attitude Awards 2021. “There are so many amazing things in the community,” she says. “I’m chuffed to be one of them. It’s a real honour.” Her mother, Vanessa, says Pakuranga College has been hugely supportive and encouraging of Wright. “They’ve been amazing.”

P

akuranga Tennis Club has just completed a publication tracing its 100 Year history from 1922 – 2022 which is due to be printed this month. The book will feature 70 bound pages, extensive black and white and full colour illustrations and eight chapters plus four appendices. Every section and aspect of the club’s activities is covered, from juniors to veterans, championships and tournaments, interclub achievements, social play and other activities. “Our club has a fascinating history and it was a great journey researching club records and beyond to produce this publication” said author, Laraine Mills.

“Stand-out milestones such as an application for permission to play on Sundays, an initial restriction of juveniles and funding a fence to keep the neighbouring cows out reflected the times and illustrates the point,” she said Pakuranga Tennis got off to a promising start following a public meeting on April 13, 1921 called (according to the hand-written minutes reproduced in the book) to forming a tennis court in the district. Two asphalt courts were actually formed and by 1948 club membership had steadily grown to 51. Hard times were to follow however with restrictions relating to the Second World War, a polio epidemic, fluctuating membership

local farmer, Mr R. A (Dufty) Bell called the meeting which was attended by 20 people and held in the ‘Pakuranga Pavillion’ (now the Pakuranga Hall).

The meeting decided to approach the Domain Board for permission to lay two asphalt courts opposite Pigeon

Mountain Reserve (Ohuiarangi) on the corner of Bucklands Beach Road.

A ladies committee was formed to raise funds by canvassing the dis-

trict for subscriptions to belong to the newly formed tennis club. The

club also held weekly card evenings and dances that were held in the local

cricket pavilion in the winter months to supplement the subscriptions. These dances proved very popular and enough money was raised to start

building the courts which were laid down the same year. At the same time a payment of £1 (NZD2) was paid to the Pakuranga

Road Board for the current post office building and the club relocated it on the site for a pavilion. Sir Frederic Lang, the first presi-

dent of the Pakuranga Lawn Tennis Club was asked to open the courts officially on 7th January 1922 and Miss. M. Paton served the first ball.

The committee and its members chose the club colours of black and

gold and these became the official colours on 1st November 1921.

club rules The earliest club rules were initi initiated later at a public meeting on 31st December 1921 They were recorded as: 1. ‘No person shall join the club under the age of fourteen years.

2. Every member must be proposed and seconded or by a written application to the secretary.

3. All subscriptions shall be paid on or before January 31st 1922. 4. No members should play more

than one set when others are wait-

ing.

5. Each player will be responsible to

the club for balls and nets used’. These were later revised at the very first Annual General meeting in 1922 and included another rule which

stated that when playing matches with other clubs, the names of the team picked to play any match should

be placed in the pavilion not later than the Tuesday night previous to the match. Any player unable to play ‘must immediately let the selection

committee know’.

Later on it was decided that if any

member was not satisfied with their place in the team they would need to ‘play off on the ladder’. It was also decided at this meeting

to re-surface one court and that the gentlemen would ‘do the work’.

The minutes stated that the membership had grown to 11 ladies and

and inability to attend to essential maintenance. Despite support from the Domain Road Board (predecessor of the Manukau City Council), falling membership and lack of participation in local competitions and the club’s own championships caused the club to go into recession in the 1955/56 season. Determined efforts by a small group of members resulted in a transformation of the club. Over the next 20 years, an additional court was formed, the clubhouse was extended and a car park formed. Membership increased dramatically (reported as 155 at the 1973/74 AGM) and success in local competitions followed. At one stage, membership was actu-

ally suspended due to the popularity of existing facilities. The 1980s saw the greatest advance in the club’s fortunes. With support from the Manukau City Council’s ‘Share Responsibility Scheme, three new courts were laid, a new two-level clubhouse was built, synthetic grass was laid on three of the six courts and night lighting installed. Success on the court followed with many interclub teams winning their sections, the stand-out achievement being promotion of the Caro Bowl Reserve team to Auckland’s top interclub grade, the Caro Bowl, in 1995. Junior tennis has always been a success story at Pakuranga with strong numbers participat-

ing in regular play, coaching and interclub competition. Individual players have performed well in regional competitions with some achieving national junior rankings. Tennis Auckland awarded the club ‘Junior Club of the Year’ in 2002. The club celebrated its 100-year history this year with the Tennis Auckland Award of 2021 Club of the Year. ➤ Copies of ‘….to form a tennis court’ will be available at $25 per copy and can be pre-ordered now from the Pakuranga Tennis Club Secretary paktennis@xtra.co.nz. OPEN LETTER: Outdoor education in jeopardy

POSITIVE OUTCOME FROM LOCKDOWN FOR HOWICK MAN

THE PROBLEM:

1. The framework classification of outdoor education providers – Under the MBIE Covid-19 Guidance outdoor education providers are strongly incentivised to require vaccine passes of their clients, facing restrictions in numbers or activity. 2. Access of students to outdoor education – Schools are not permitted to discriminate on the basis of vaccination status. Therefore schools face a policy dilemma when planning outdoor education delivered by an outside provider. They are choosing to cancel their outdoor education plans, which results in students missing valuable learning opportunities and the providers losing much (or all) of their business.

T

he people of Aotearoa New Zealand place a unique connectedness to the outdoors. In Te Ao Māori, everything is connected to the land, the sky, the sea, and the forest. We value outdoor adventure, and we particularly value the shared experience aspect – a group of friends all knowing what it feels like to sleep under the stars, swim in the river, or paddle away from the beach… together. It is in sharing and remembering these experiences that they are transformed into life-long learning opportunities that help to shape and define who we are. Many New Zealand rangatahi only access these things through school outdoor education and the loss of these opportunities will have an extensive and lasting impact. As New Zealand starts to cautiously re-open under the Covid Protection Framework, a whole sector is at risk. The current requirements for outdoor education providers place their survival under threat. The Covid Protection Framework means that for most to operate, they will need to require students to have a My Vaccine Pass. This means students without passes will be left at school and miss these valuable, in some cases life changing, experiences. Schools who don’t wish to single out and leave behind students are choosing to cancel their outdoor education altogether, meaning all the students miss out. For much of the past two years, our young people from ages 5 to 18 have had schooling interrupted, face-to- face contact with friends or family removed, and sports or creative outlet opportunities lost. Outdoor education through school camps allows students to rebuild confidence and reconnect with others, learn life skills and resilience, and supports hauora, mental and physical health. Also at risk are the NCEA assessments of the senior students, out-

Stuart Neels with his book Earth’s Acrobats.

door education assessment cannot be replicated at school. School groups on school camp typically have students who are from a single cohort, undertaking activities, eating, and sharing accommodation together. They typically do not mix with others during their stay. In essence, this is a mini lockdown where the total possible interactions with others remain static, with the added benefit of most activity being held outdoors. Both school staff and provider staff are required to be vaccinated. The hypothesis that outdoor education at camps is somehow of greater risk than normal school is not correct. The benefits of personal and interpersonal growth far outweigh any perceived risk. The guidance and advice from government is not clear, different departments offer conflicting advice. Advice to school boards and principals proposes a precautionary approach, often resulting in no approval of outdoor education camps and Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) activity. The Covid Protection Framework settings hamper outdoor education sector capability. Centres are no longer eligible for the wage subsidy yet without school groups they are unable to pay the bills. These providers need to survive to continue to support schools to deliver outdoor education and EOTC into the future. Pre-Covid, hundreds of thousands of school students experienced outdoor education and EOTC as part of their education. This was enabled by the professional services of our sector, delivered by experienced, skilled, and passionate educators. ORCA providers inform best practice through safety management plans, child protection policies, and youth development practice. Examples include keeping school groups separate, excellent implementation of public health measures, and staff practices ensuring successful delivery throughout

Alert levels 1 and 2. For the sake of youth wellbeing, we want to safeguard against capability loss in the outdoor education sector. Its continued viability will provide rangatahi their right to connection with the natural environment and the many taonga of the sea, the mountains, the bush and the land. We must provide the opportunity for all young people to push their boundaries, grow their confidence, become more independent, and share life-long memories with their peer group. In New Zealand, no child should be denied access to the mental and physical benefits of outdoor education. Please provide certainty to schools and providers planning school camps and outdoor education for 2022. This will enable the retention of staff, appropriate recruitment, and the continued servicing of rangatahi through outdoor education and EOTC in 2022 and beyond. ➤ Request: Implement wellconsidered changes to the Covid Protection Framework to allow all school students to access curriculum learning experiences wherever those experiences occur – on the school site or with an outdoor education provider. ➤ Question: Why can school students without vaccine passes attend school or tertiary institutes, but not curriculum-related offsite education with external providers?

WE DID THIS TO THE EARTH In reply to Ian George (Times, December 8), “Climate change religion”, blind faith can be terribly misguided and inaccurate. He disclaims climate change as man-made and places it squarely on the sun. No mention of man’s abuse and misuse of the earth’s

bounty and environment, the disrespect of man in polluting the atmosphere we breathe, the soils we plant in, the seas where much of the order of nature’s stability originates from. “God flooded the earth 4200 years ago so that we may live on this beautiful earth” ... figures are totally imaginary! Yes, the Bible says there was a “great flood”, and if scientists, archeologists can say it was 4200 years ago, which they haven’t, when and where it would most likely have occurred, would be the region of the Middle East. Aborigines of Australia have inhabited that Continent for at least 65,000 years and (were) originally from Africa, where humanoid remains have been dated at 150,000 years. A very simplistic and erroneous statement, in other words, excusing man from any responsibility to care and respond to “God’s gift”, Earth.

THANK YOU AND MERRY CHRISTMAS Many thanks for giving our Christmas cakes a plug in your paper a few weeks ago. This help our sales as I received numerous calls from your readers seeking to purchase one or more. We have now sold out this year’s stock. Your help is very much appreciated. Best wishes for Christmas.

VAX DISCRIMINATION I agree with Nigel Keyes and I’m also against vax discrimination, except when it comes to the hospital bill. The non-vaccinated should be made to pay their bill for not wanting the free medication and maybe pay for R&D if they create a mutation.

When Covid-19 hit Stuart Neels’ beloved tourism industry and the international borders were closed, he had to pivot to keep himself busy and sane. For the last over 30 years, Stuart has headed up one of NZ’s largest inbound tourism operations, bringing tourists to New Zealand from, mainly, Britain, the rest of Europe and the US. He decided to formalise a story he had told his children more than 25-years-ago and write a children’s book. The book about another planet and unique creatures called ‘Neeble Nobbers’ was created. This is his first book. This fast-paced sci-fi is a comedy and adventure story for children aged 6-12 years. Stuart’s idea is that it should be read by children and parents together as there are many levels of originality for all to enjoy. As the story developed, he realise that illustrations would really enhance his story and a family friend, recently returned from New York University, Abu Dhabi, was keen to make her lockdown experience more interesting too. The quirky sketches by Katie Glasgow Palmer, a delightful cover and writing by Stuart Neels (Stu Sleen) is definitely a positive to come from Covid lockdown experience. ➤ Earth’s Acrobats is available from all major online retailers.

IS THIS A SIGN? Has anyone else noticed that we are slowly losing our letters off the Howick Library building? Let’s hope someone will tidy this up before our 175th next year.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS LUNCH IS OFF For nearly 20 years, St Columba Presbyterian Church has held a free Christmas lunch on Christmas Day for those in the community who would love to socialise and share Christmas lunch with others in the community. All these years the Christmas lunch have been well attended and appreciated by those that were present. Regrettably, this year, because of the Covid 19 and government regulations, the Christmas lunch has to be cancelled, especially with the rules imposed under the traffic light system. To all those in the community who asked and were looking forward to attending the lunch, our apologies – perhaps next Christmas, if all goes well. In any case, have a lovely Christmas.

CRICKET

Search on for female cricketing superstars

A

s New Zealand prepares to host the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, official sponsor ANZ is seeking the next generation of female cricketing talent from Auckland to join the ANZ Next XI. Eleven young women, aged 12-18, will be selected from across New Zealand to join the ANZ Next XI. They’ll be invited to an exclusive White Ferns junior training academy, where they will meet the players, train with the team, attend expert-led master classes and learn valuable skills to inspire them to become the very best cricketers they can be. As long-time supporters of

women in sport, ANZ wants to make sure that nothing can stop the next generation of sportswomen from pursuing a future in cricket and has created this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to help encourage them to get there. White Ferns all-rounder Suzie Bates said she can’t wait to meet the ANZ Next XI “An opportunity like this would have been a dream for me as a kid, so I know it’s going to mean so much to these young cricketers. It’s amazing to see ANZ support the next generation of female cricketers in the same way they back the White Ferns,” said Bates. ANZ is on the lookout for cricket

fanatics of all abilities, ranging from passionate beginners to the talented few who eat wickets for breakfast and always try to smash it out of the park. These young women will be dedicated to spending time on the cricket pitch and be determined to improve their skills. Applicants will be judged on the passion and determination they can demonstrate in their application. ANZ New Zealand CEO Antonia Watson said it is important to con-

tinue to create opportunities for young women to succeed. “I’m a firm believer that if you can see it, you can be it. The opportunity to spend time with some of our most inspirational female athletes is something these young women will never forget,” said Watson. She said ANZ has been a strong supporter of women in sport for more than 10 years from grassroots to elite level athletes. “That’s why we’re proud to be

putting our support behind the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase our women athletes and provide important opportunities to grow the next generation of cricketers.” ➤ To apply for a spot on the ANZ Next XI team or to nominate a deserving young sportswoman head to www.anz.co.nz/worldcup/ next-xi. SEA SCOUTS ALL SMILES WITH SAILING HELMETS

9. Out of sight, out of mind.

10. You make more money when you do! It’s plain and simple.

By ROGER ROBINSON Last July the Bucklands Beach Sea Scouts approached our Club seeking our help for the provision of sailing helmets for their group. Their Group was planning to attend a 10-day National Regatta in Picton in December. The Scouting Group had made it mandatory that all participants

wear sailing helmets for safety reasons as in the past scouts have been injured by the swinging boom. The scout group had identified a supply source for the helmets at $50 each and they required 30. The Bucklands Beach Lions Club considered their request and agreed to fully cover the $1500 purchase price and the helmets were ordered. Each helmet bore a

small label acknowledging the Bucklands Beach Lions Club’s support. However, Covid breached our county’s border and in August we moved into Level 4 lockdown. This has only recently been lifted to a level where it has been possible to formally hand over the helmets to the Sea Scout Group. Unfortunately, the National Regatta in Picton has been

cancelled. Last Saturday members of the Buckland Beach Lions Club met up with the members of the Bucklands Beach Sea Scouts outside their scout den in Bucklands Beach and officially handed over the 30 helmets They will be a requirement for ongoing sailing activities. Roger Robinson is president of the Bucklands Beach Lions Club

NEIUFI NOMINATED FOR HALBERG AWARD P

aralympic gold medalwinning swimmer Tupou Neiufi, who trains at Howick Pakuranga Swimming Club, is among 79 nominees for the Halberg Awards. Neiufi, 20, who won NZ’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympic Games in August, is one of 11 athletes nominated in the ISPS Handa Para Athlete/ Team of the Year category. The Halberg Foundation said 79 nominations have been submitted from national sports organisations and an independent nominations board for the 59th ISPS Handa Halberg Awards. Created by Olympic gold medallist Sir Murray Halberg (ONZ) in 1963 to honour and celebrate sporting excellence, the awards are the major fundraiser for the Halberg Foundation – the charity he founded which aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled young New Zealanders by enabling them to participate in sport and recreation. board, comprising respected individuals from the sports sector, has confirmed the nominations in six categories. The winners will be announced at the awards at Spark Arena, Auckland, on Wednesday February 23. The nominations come from 24 sporting codes for achievements within the last two years

(December 1, 2019 to November 30, 2021). This is a change from the standard 12 months due to the impact of Covid-19 on global sporting competitions with Halberg hosting a Decade Champion ceremony instead in March 2021. Other nominees in the ISPS Handa Para Athlete/Team of the Year category are Anna

Grimaldi (Para athletics), Danielle Aitchison (Para athletics), Emma Foy & Hannah van Kampen (Para cycling), Holly Robinson (Para athletics), Lisa Adams (Para athletics), Nicole Murray (Para cycling), Sarah Ellington (Para cycling), Sophie Pascoe (Para swimming), and Will Stedman (Para athletics).
