Need to replicate Gandhi Nivas across NZ By FARIDA MASTER

G

andhi Nivas, which helps prevent family harm in New Zealand by providing men with early intervention services, could be expanded throughout the country. After a five year independent Massey University report of Gandhi Nivas, Pakuranga’s Ranjna Patel, the driving force behind an innovative early intervention pro-

gramme for family harm, hopes that government agencies including Health, Social Development, Justice, Corrections, Police, Education, Housing and Whanau Ora can work together to replicate it across New Zealand. Now that the initial ground work has proved that it has helped reduce family harm by 60 per cent, Ranjna, founder-director of Nirvana Health Group, hopes that the government picks up the ball and

runs with it to make it a national programme. The Massey University evaluation report (fifth year in a row) was recently presented at Parliament House in Wellington. The event was attended by government agencies, ministers, and NZ Police Commissioner. Police Minister Stuart Nash said, “Family harm is our nation’s shame. We have 150,000 call outs every year. Ranjna you have saved

lives of women and children and saved families.” Launched in December 2014, Gandhi Nivas was set up to meet the counselling and housing needs of men who are bound by Police Safety Orders (PSOs) and cannot return home. The free service provides 24/7 assessment and counselling to clients in addition to free accommodation and wrap-around support to victims and children.

Intervention services are provided to clients and their families by Sahaayta Counselling Services. It began with one house in Otahuhu in 2014 and soon grew to include houses in Te Atatu and Papakura. The target group was initially Indian men but now, according to the findings, a third of the people they serve are Maori and a third are Pacific men. ➤ Turn to page 3

The Howick Sports Awards were held on Monday June 29 at the Pakuranga Rugby Club. Winners from 15 categories were chosen from the many nominations received and included individual sports people, teams, and the coaches, administrators and volunteers who also make a significant contribution to local sport. The Howick Local Board constantly aims for a ‘Healthy Howick’ - with an active community where our people have good physical and mental health. They believe that participation in sport can contribute to both these outcomes and build other great qualities. The Local Board congratulates all nominees and winners - you make our community proud!

Students help the homeless for all involved, the students says. To combat this issue, the two sociology classes put out a call to the Howick College community for donations of warm clothing, bedding and small household items and have been thrilled by the response they received. “It has been really rewarding to see the donations from our community piling up in the back of our classroom,” says Year 11 student Amelia Carr.

Let’s change the shame “Gandhi Nivas comes in at a point where change can be made. One of the things that strikes me is the ability to innovate - to see a gap and find a solution. The pieces were in place.” At another event the following day hosted at Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) guided by MC Rachel Smalley, the former TV presenter, said it was an honour to be in Parliament where ministers and agencies collectively agreed that this service has changed lives. The MIT theatre was packed with supporters of the programme including business woman Theresa Gattung. District Commander for Counties Manukau Superintendent Jill Rogers, said that in the last

12 months, police have responded to more than 46,000 events. “Counties Manukau makes up nearly 25,000 of these occurrences. Our staff is called to a family harm episode every four minutes,” Rogers said. “I would like to make a very special mention of Ranjna Patel, who has long been a partner with Police, and who is an inspiration to us all. I would like to acknowledge the ground-breaking work that you began with the previous District Commander Deputy Commissioner John Tims.” Rogers said that the wrap-around service for victims, perpetrators and their families was an area that was missing in the police response

Visibly impressed by the work done, NZ Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said, “Ranjna you are a powerful force for good in the community and I would like to thank you for your commitment to working with partners and police on family violence prevention. “This is an example of what can be achieved when communities take the lead. One of my priorities is focussed prevention through partnership.” Emma Powell, chief customer officer ACC said, “We intervene at a point where harm is often occurring with survivors, victims. We have a significant role to play when it comes to prevention of harm.

South Asian Advisory Board. “Four out of 14 women killed in the previous year were Indian. Assistant Commissioner John Tims asked the advisory board to give an insight into the cultural aspect of this data. “Standing on the sideline, what I heard was men need help, they need counselling, without being in the system, and women need space to feel safe. “With the support of Sucharita Varma and Zoya Salim Kara of Sahaayta Counselling Service, the seed was planted. “Now we have a 150-page report that says it works. Family harm costs over $4b to our economy. Each intervention house costs $650,000 working with around 350-400 families. “Let’s try to change the shame we have with our family harm stats in New Zealand.”

to families. She also made a special mention of ACC who had the foresight to invest in this service and to Sahaayta Counselling for its dedicated service. Talking about a different approach to family harm, Sucharita Varma of Sahaayta Counselling Service said that a lot of their work is to do with unpacking. “Instead of questioning the perpetrator of crime we first sit them down and provide a hot meal and a bed. We focus on families to let them know that they are safe. We try and find out the triggers that lead to violence and make them aware of it.” Ranjna said it was a collective effort with so many innovative leaders involved in the journey that started in 2014, when Inspector Rakesh Naidoo presented some data to the Counties Manukau

The items collected were then donated to the Auckland City Mission, who will put them to good use, helping both homeless people and those who are moving into their own homes all around Auckland. “We have worked hard for this outcome and are proud of what we have accomplished. We hope that we have made a change in the lives of the individuals who received our contribution,” says Amelia.

Due to the shortage of affordable housing, there has been a significant rise in the number of homeless people in New Zealand and learning about just how severe the situation really is has been an eye-opening experience

A wealth of legal experience The oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan has seen many a Howick resident pass through its doors, as with any rite of passage. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the proudly local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method of resolving the difficulties they may have with property, family and business affairs, and know how they should best protect

their assets for their children and for their future.” Local businesses recognise this long-standing legal practice as somewhere they can look to for reliable advice when complications arise from business activities such as taxation, trusts and leasing premises.

We also offer all-encompassing law services that include; trust, wills, estates, matrimonial property and residential and commercial conveyancing. The practice has also opened an office at Beachlands in the Pohutukawa Coast Shopping Centre (behind Countdown) in order to provide

OPINION

Transport minister considering Busway

P

arliament has recently been legislating measures to fasttrack infrastructure projects as an economic booster in the wake of Covid-19. With all infrastructure, particularly roading projects, consent delays are costly and take considerable time. The Government’s fast track consenting bill was passed to allow for a shortened process where panels are set up and can approve projects in about two months. Legislation like this is an admission that the RMA is broken because every time there is a natural disaster or crisis, Parliament passes special laws. The Eastern Busway and Reeves Road flyover would have benefitted significantly from fast tracked consenting. That’s why when the law was being considered I put up amendments in Parliament to fast track a range of projects in east Auckland. The National Party failed to get an amendment to the Bill in on time for the Eastern Busway but fortunately they still were able to vote for the proposal I put forward. This was not successful with the coalition government voting down all proposed additions to the Bill. However the Government has set up a process in the legislation for new projects to be added as fast track projects in a second tranche at a later stage. I’m pleased to have secured a

MP for Botany

Jami-Lee Ross commitment from the Transport Minister Phil Twyford to have the Ameti Eastern Busway considered as one of these second tranche projects. I have been lobbying the Transport Minister on east Auckland transport issues. His office has advised me that Mr Twyford raised AMETI with David Parker, the Environment Minister, to see if the Busway could be fast tracked. I have been told Mr Twyford himself “is very keen to consider the AMETI busway as part of the second tranche of projects”. Transport in our community is always the number one challenge we face. The Eastern Busway has now started being constructed so if we can successfully convince the Government to fast track the Ti Rakau Drive portion of the project, that will enable it to be completed faster. I will keep working constructively with the Government to press forward with projects that benefit Botany. ➤ Jami-Lee Ross is the MP for Botany

First concert after lockdown gets rousing welcome By FARIDA MASTER

T

who was awarded an MNZM for services to music and seniors in this year’s New Year’s Honours List “Today, we are probably the first in the world to perform live during these times,” said Susan. The Stage and Screen concert started off on a cheerful note with a rousing performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Changes Everything. With brilliant performances by Amanda Atlas, an internationallyacclaimed opera singer who outdid herself with a rendition of Don’t cry for me Argentina — there were several performances that deserve a mention including Karl Perigo’s rendition of all-time favourite ‘If I were a rich man’ from the movie Fiddler on the Roof; and theatre personality Russell Dixon’s enter-

taining performance of Me from Beauty and the Beast. The duet by one of New Zealand’s finest operatic tenors Bonaventure Allan-Moetaua and Russell Dixon, struck a poignant chord as they performed This is the moment. Every performer, be it the gifted and beautiful Kelly Lim Harris’ slick performance of Roxie from the musical Chicago or Susan Boland’s Just you wait from My Fair Lady— was outstanding. Accompanied by Grant Winterburn on piano, the fitting finale was a trilogy of We’ll Meet Again — a tribute to wartime singer, songwriter, the late Dame Vera Lyn; followed by One day more and the foot-tapping Amigos Para Siempre composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

here was no keeping the more mature people away from a Stage and Screen Operatunity Daytime Concert on Tuesday July 7. Going from the standing ovation that Susan Boland, co-founder Operatunity Daytime Concerts got as she walked on to the stage, it looked like the seniors were having the time of their lives. After a logistical nightmare that involved cancelling 59 pre-booked concerts during lockdown and refunding 16,000 tickets that were bought in advance, Operatunity resumed its tour of daytime concerts, starting with St Columba Church in Botany. Susan is a former geriatric nurse

and has been a professional singer for 30 years and created Operatunity Daytime Concerts to cater to her passion for music and care of seniors. She said they wanted to find out how their patrons were doing during lockdown and decided to pick up the phone and check on them. “We, along with our office staff, called over 5000 individual patrons during lockdown. If you didn’t get a call, we are sorry.” Another bonus for their loyal patrons was the ‘Operatunity Happiness Half Hour’, a free, half hour weekly concert on the Operatunity YouTube channel with 40+ homegrown artists. “This is our way of giving back to our seniors who may feel isolated or scared at present,” said Susan,

Ross appears in High Court I

ndependent Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross appeared in the Auckland High Court last Wednesday for a pre-trial review hearing on charges related to the National Party donation scandal. Jointly-accused businessmen Yikun Zhang, 48, Shijia (Colin) Zheng, 34, and Hengjia (Joe) Zheng, 34 also appeared.

Independent Botany MP JamiPhoto supplied Lee Ross.

Justice Simon Moore set a trial date for September 6, 2021. It is expected to take at least six weeks. The charges stem from an

accusation by Ross against his former National Party leader, Simon Bridges. A subsequent SFO investigation resulted in charges being laid against Ross. He has pleaded not guilty to two charges of deception under the Crimes Act and one of ‘providing false or misleading information’ under the Serious Fraud Office Act.

On August 9, 2019, Mark Siviter, died at the scene Siviter, 37, had been sitting of the crash while Aickin

was seriously injured and received treatment at Middlemore Hospital. Aickin’s initial explanation for the crash was that he only had “one or two beers” at the bar and that another car had hit his. Judge Bergseng said neither of those things were correct. The courtroom for the sentencing was full of family members of both Siviter and Aickin. Siviter’s mother, Renee Kelly, told the court her life had changed forever on the day of her “cherished son’s” death, Stuff reported.

Co-written by playwright Frank Vosper (who disappeared at sea in 1937 in an incident that would not be out of place in an Agatha Christie tale) from a story by the legendary playwrighter, Love from a Stranger tells the story of Cecily Harringdon (played by the magnetic Phillippa Hibbs), a young woman of new-found means courtesy of winning a sweepstake. Set in 1930’s London, Cecily is yearning for adventure outside her job and the social restrictions that came with the time, Cecily meets and instantly falls in love with a charming American named Bruce Lovell (the suitably slimy Erik van De Wijdeven), who answers an ad for a room to rent in the Bayswater apartment Cecily shares with her aunt Loo-Loo (Catherine Maunsell) and friend Mavis Wilson (Rosheen Leslie). Their courtship moves rapidly in spite of the fact Cecily is engaged to Nigel Lawrence (Matthew Cousins), who has returned to London after fulfilling colonial duties on a 3-year tour of the Sudan. The second act sees the couple move away from the capital, and after exchanging vows wind up in a West Sussex cottage destined for domestic bliss as the years pass. Dr Gribble (Andrew Maher) and gardener Hodgson (Barrie Graham) are introduced as characters in the country setting, and prove perceptive as they soon discover chinks in Bruce’s charming veneer. The confident American’s slick guise also gradually becomes exposed to Cecily, and the audience is offered hints to his true manipulative intentions and sinister past.

A scene from the play Love from a Stranger. Photo supplied

After a slow, but enjoyable burn establishing the scene, the plot picks up pace in the second act and lovers of the mystery genre will be indulged with a plot twist for the ages. The responsibility of making a period-piece relevant to today’s audiences is done brilliantly by director Laurie Mills, a veteran of Noel Coward and Christie productions. The cosy atmosphere of the theatre was the perfect antidote to the chill outside, and a glass of reasonably priced red from the well stocked bar added to a great night out. ands up those of you who have no idea there’s loads of kilometres of hiking trails in the Hunua Ranges? We all know there are dams up there which hold the city’s drinking water (there’s more up in the Waitakeres of course and don’t forget some is drawn from the Waikato River). The Hunua Ranges are

easily accessible and wellsign-posted and you can pick the length of your walk to suit. We parked at the waterfall carpark. After a quick look at the waterfall (there’s a picture frame there too which tourists love), the gateway to the hiking trails is right there in the carpark. The tracks are gravel and well-maintained so are excellent underfoot – even after rain (we only had a

sprinkle on Saturday). We stopped for lunch at Cossey Dam which is scarily low. My app said we’d walked 10.4km at just over three hours. There were a couple of good climbs but we took our time. There are a few little tracks to lookouts which are worthwhile looking into for different photo opportunities. I’ll need to go back to walk some of the other tracks.

Dam levels (as at yesterday morning) were at 57.4 per cent compared to 80.7 per cent which is normal for this time of year. There was no rain in the Hunua Ranges yesterday with 34.5mm falling there in the past week. Just 1.5mm fell in

the Waitakere Ranges yesterday with 48.5mm recorded for the past seven days. Since the start of the drought in November, water catchments have received around 24 per cent less rainfall than normal.

Meanwhile mandatory water restrictions remain in place. The water consumption target for July is 409 million litres or less a day. Sunday’s consumption was 385 million litres with the seven day rolling average 394m litres.

Your opinion matters to us. Email us at editor@times.co.nz; comment on our Facebook page, facebook.com/ timesonlinenz; or write to us at The Editor, Times Newspapers, PO Box 38232, Howick, Auckland 2145. Reader Glen Ponse reckons our waterways could be used in times of water shortage. Photo supplied

WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE Some 20 years ago, when the public learned that the waterways, or drains really, running through the Howick/Pakuranga area’s parks would rise dangerously during rainstorms, I wrote to the Times, pointing out that while these flash floods had always occurred, these drains used to be streams, winding through farmland, and punctuated by deep tree-edged pools, which served to buffer the flooding effect. Although these certainly rose quickly in sudden storms, the danger was minimal. I suggested installing a series of small dams at intervals to emulate the original landscape which would also create natural beauty spots. Fast-forward to early this year, I was disappointed - if unastonished – to return and discover no such catchment measures – only warning signs at strategic points and, more worryingly, that the climate

had become drier, the population had increased and public water supplies were now under stress. I will therefore now add that the aforementioned dams would provide obvious points of emergency water extraction and a lot closer than the Waikato. At the moment, there’s an awful lot of grey water literally going down the drain. Surely holding some of it back isn’t out of the question?

Glen Ponse, Howick

REGURGITATING THE ALARMISTS Re: The Essence of Science (Dennis Horne, Times, July 7 Feedback) This is a particularly detailed regurgitation of several alarmist beliefs which appear to be superficially but unscientifically true but for which there is growing opposition. Recent renunciation of these alarmist views by Michael Shellenberger and Zion Lights (of Extinction Rebellion) is showing the way.

Dennis Horne would have fitted in very well with the established authorities in the 17th Century who insisted that Galileo was wrong and punished him for claiming that the earth revolved around the sun. We know, of course, that Galileo was completely correct and all those established authoritarian bodies were incorrect. As Mr Einstein pointed out, it only requires one proof to disprove any hypothesis. Today, many bodies, such as were quoted by your correspondent, are certain in matters such as Global Warming (now changed to Climate Change since there has been virtually no Global Warming) and Accelerating Sea Level Rise (of which there is no acceleration). They are so certain that that minimal invisible life-giving carbon dioxide is responsible that they choose to describe it now as “carbon” (yes, dirty black sooty carbon). In fact, CO2 is slowly rising from a disastrously low level of one-part in 4000 to a marginally better 1.5part in 4000, when in past millennia all life flourished when it reached very much higher levels. Sea Level Rise is NOT accelerating but is about 150mm per 100 years – nothing much to worry about as demonstrated when such alarmist celebrities as Barrack Obama and Al Gore recently bought seaside homes in the USA! Then, as a final indication of his irrationality, he describes his opponents as “flat earthers, anti-vaxxers

Seeking Serenity? It’s yours, with 50% off.

and deniers” which is the usual hint that non-alarmists should be associated with the Nazis. This merely demonstrates, as usual, the weakness of his arguments.

GET FACTS RIGHT ON CANNABIS The MakeItLegal campaign has today (July 7) welcomed the website www.pmcsa.ac.nz/topics/cannabis/ on cannabis legalisation from the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor. It is essential that people have reliable and factual information to help them decide how to vote in the cannabis referendum. The benefits of cannabis legalisation are pretty clear and the evidence is consistent, although there remains a lot of confusion among the public. Some of this confusion has been deliberately created to sow fear. Having an independent and impartial guide to what the evidence says will help New Zealanders to make up their own minds. Most of us agree about the basics. We want to make it harder for young people to get hold of cannabis. We want those few people who do experience problems as a result of their cannabis use to get help, not a criminal record. We want adults to be able to make their own decisions, as long as they are not hurting others. This report reinforces that a ‘yes’ vote in the referendum is the best way to achieve all three outcomes.

CHECK KIWIS BEFORE THEY RETURN I have been listening to the National Party Leader Todd Muller and his comments on the Covid-19 handling of by our Prime Minister was irresponsible. I am sure, nay, confident that he and his party would not have done any better than what is being done by Labour, who I (and many others) think are doing an excellent job. Mr Muller, in a democratic set up the opposition too has a major role to play in helping the Government in a crisis and not just find faults. We should be united and fight the crises as one. A humble suggestion – make it mandatory for any Kiwi to have an all-clear certificate from the authorities at the port of departure and then only can they board a plane. Moreover, anyone flouting the rules of isolation must be fined and made to pay for their isolation and treatment. This will deter others.

Some of those campaigning to keep prohibition seem to intensely dislike people who enjoy cannabis for some reason. We hope that this website helps move us towards a more adult debate. This is not about what you think of cannabis, or how you think other people should live their lives. It’s about the right regulatory framework for a substance that a majority of New Zealanders have used.

ing between spectators some minutes after the final whistle. Police say they were called to the fight at Shadbolt Park in New Lynn about 4.30pm. A police spokesperson said, “Police followed up the limited lines of enquiry available however there weren’t any positive IDs made as to who was involved. There’s nothing to suggest there were any serious injuries to any party.”

LOCAL LEAGUE

Fox Memorial winners Howick Hornets went down to Northcote 28-6 at Birkenhead War Memorial on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers remain undefeated through the opening month of the competition after powering past Howick in a soggy encounter. Centre Casey Smith scored a double for the Tigers, while back-rower Pierre Pili was among the standouts for Geoff Morton’s side. In division 2, Pakuranga held on to beat Hibiscus Coast 18-16 after turning an 18-12 half-time lead into an eventual two-point victory. Second-rower Tony Siligi was among the standouts for the Jaguars in the win.

Pakuranga United Rugby Club was on the losing end of a 23-8 scoreline away at Suburbs. It was a disappointing day for the Access Solutions Pakuranga Premier side (and their large crowd of travelling spectators) who after a scrappy first half on a very saturated field (down 3-8) failed to gain field position in the second spell to go down to a determined Suburbs side. Although drawing level at 8-all midway through the 2nd spell Pakuranga went on to commit way too many errors and gave away silly penalties in their own half which were expertly converted into points by Suburbs 1st Five Eighth Carl Perry who controlled the game throughout. In the curtainraiser, the Marie Raos Raw White Premier Development side came back from a slow start (down 0-12) to make it 4 from 4 this season with a determined effort winning 36-15 against a very experienced Suburbs side. This week both teams are on Bell Park in the annual East v West battle against Waitemata. The premier game’s aftermath was sullied by reports of fight-

OPINION

Mo’unga magic foils Blues’ bold challenge I

t took Richie Mo’unga’s magic and the Crusaders’ strong bench to deny the much-improved Blues a Super Rugby Aotearoa win before a full house at Christchurch on Saturday night. The win, the Crusaders’ 36th unbeaten home trot, was deserved. But the 26-15 scoreline failed to do justice to the Blues bold display. Blues loosies Hoskins Sotutu, Dalton Papalii and the rejuvenated Akira Ioane worked tirelessly with Sotutu’s all-round game and lineout work continuing to mark him as a likely All Black No 8 successor to Kieran Read. Inside backs Findlay Christie, Otere Black and Harry Plummer were tidy while centre Rieko Ioane and right wing Mark Telea were dangerous runners who reeked power and pace. Yet Telea was edged in the second half by the overall excellence of George Bridge whereas powerful Blues left wing Caleb Clarke was starved of ball. However, at times, lack of disci-

pline at breakdowns killed Blues momentum although there were a few occasions when it was impossible for the so-called culprit to roll away. There were also majestic moments in a thriller that fulfilled its high expectations. Telea scored a wonderful corner try from a huge Black skip pass which Black converted before Mo’unga replied with two easy penalties to reduce the lead to 7-6. Only a great Bridge covering tackle saved a dazzling breakout from Telea who beat three defenders. And by half-time the Blues had made 70 tackles compared with the Crusaders 40. Black and Mo’unga traded penalties, the latter converting his after a crunching Papalii tackle on Sevu Reece from which he couldn’t roll away. At last reward for the Blues from Akira Ioane’s quick tap and drive. The ball swept wide for brother Rieko to crash through three tackles for the touchdown.

Agnew’s Angle Incredibly Braydon Ennor charged down Black’s attempted conversion in a pivotal moment to leave the Blues 15-9 ahead. Then Mo’unga produced his magic by regathering his short, straight kick-off and only desperate covering tackles from Ofa Tu’ungafasi and Akira Ioane stopped him and Jack Goodhue from scoring . Mo’unga’s long skip pass released Bridge down the left before his inside pass brought reward with Mitch Drummond’s converted try; 19-15. That would have been a fair result but the gifted Will Jordan emphasised Crusaders depth with the final try from Mo’unga’s delayed pass before Mo’unga’s inevitable conversion. In the end only two tries each

Richie Mo’unga’s brilliance was the difference between the teams.

with Mo’unga’s superior goal kicking, daring and skill the difference. What the Blues required was the same kind of unpredictable brilliance from champion fullback Beauden Barrett. He has given direction and stability but not the flair and pace expected since joining the team from the Hurricanes. Would he have fared better if placed face to face with Mo’unga? Possibly but would that have been fair to Black who has grown so much this season? Possibly, possibly not. Sometimes, however, a gamble can change fortunes and Barrett was a

wizard who was twice been named world rugby’s best player. And against a champion team like the Crusaders wizards need to work their magic in the manner of Mo’unga. Meanwhile the Blues can take comfort their coaching staff under Leon MacDonald has worked wonders in producing a tough, hardworking forward pack and fast and aggressive backs. However something extra is needed to topple the champion Crusaders. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
