WHO WE ARE AND WHY THIS
COMMUNITY RESOURCE GUIDE This is the third year our all-volunteer group of the South Shore Coalition for Mental Health and Aging has published this Resource Guide. A large number of resources are updated from year to year and so many new organizations come into being to provide assistance that an annual publication is a must. The Coalition is pleased to provide this needed service. Just take a look at our grid, starting on page 4 and you’ll see the names of those nonprofit organizations that provide service(s) to South Hillsborough (mainly everything we could find from the Alafia River to the Manatee county line). From the grid – which tells you what each organization provides – you can look up the organizations that would be most useful in the Categories Section, starting on page 22

The coalition itself is composed of organizations and volunteers whose work is to provide assistance for people who need it – whose lives or well-being, for any number of physical or mental reasons, is troubled. Whether it is people going hungry to discovering dementia or Alzheimer’s or a deeply troubled child, this Resource Guide is able to point you to where help may be found.
By Bob Black, Coalition for Mental Health and Aging
Editorial Supervisor Karen Ryan kept us on track with writer Bob Black leading the writing team. Bev Hiller, Director of Education for the Computer Club was vital for editing content along with Paula Moore with Sunshine Senior Movers and Daisy Vega from the Freedom to Walk Foundation. Karen Fredricks, president of the Tampa chapter of NAMI led the committee again this year with Diane Tottrup who orchestrated the computer programming. The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay provided invaluable funding to ensure those in need in our area would have access to resources offered by local organizations at their fingertips. You’ll find that neighbor helping neighbor is a recurring theme throughout this guide. We’re all volunteers and giving our time provides a benefit to those who need assistance and, truly, to ourselves. Finally, if you can find anything we have missed or needs changing or updating, please let us know. Send an email to the Mental Health Coalition at office@mentalhealthandaging.org and we’ll update it in the next edition. – The Editors
The coalition is grateful to its president, Debbie Caneen, Director of Admissions for Sun Towers Retirement Community who has led the Coalition to producing this Guide since inception.

Sun City Center Resource Deputy Outlines Sheriff’s Office Job Working With ‘Community’ By HCSO Deputy Jeff Merry The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is a full service law enforcement agency composed of more than 4,000 law enforcement deputies, detention deputies and civilians. It is one of the largest community resources for those who live, work and play in Hillsborough County. The Sheriff's Office is committed to reducing the crime rate for Hillsborough County, and does so with ongoing cooperation with citizen support groups, neighborhood associations, civic groups, and community leaders.
Most of these can be prevented with some training and education. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office provides education and awareness through various mediums, including brochures and seminars, to help people avoid being victimized.
Call 813-242-5515 for more information.
This community resource guide is a perfect example of the community collaboration required to make an area a wonderful place to live. Nevertheless, Sun City Center and the surrounding communities are targets for financial and economic scams. These scams usually victimize seniors, but the perpetrators are not picky and will be happy to elicit money from anyone. Some of the most prevalent scams in the South County area include the IRS impersonation scam, identity theft, investment scams, lottery and sweepstakes fraud, Internet fraud and telemarketing scams.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Community Resource Deputy, Jeffery Merry
County Parks, and Other Places to Play Local county parks offer a wonderful opportunity to get outside and explore the beautiful scenery the SouthShore area has on display. From nature parks and preserves to skate parks and parks for our four-legged friends, you’re sure to find something to your liking. Complementing Hillsborough County’s parks are other local destinations that provide fun for all. Check out the YMCA or Camp Bayou when planning your things to do.

Eight Hours That Can Save a Life:
THOSE EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS:
By Marcia Doscher, Coalition for Mental Health & Aging
What 211 and 911 Really Get for You
It Could Even Be Your Own The newspapers are filled with it and television thrives on it. Every day we hear or see stories on desperate acts of violence committed by people against themselves or others.
THEY NEED MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID. Now there is a path for each of us to be able to help, to act in a way that will save lives and help prevent immeasurable damage. It’s all in an eight-hour seminar called, unsurprisingly, “Mental Health First Aid.” I took the course. I’m a trained social worker. I even teach in the field, but the eight hours of learning about the mental health first aid action plan taught me things I’ve never known, and it taught me in an easy way. The seminar is intended for nonprofessionals. It is designed so we can understand mental illness and learn to be aware of changes in a person’s behavior that may signal an upcoming mental health crisis. Five hundred thousand—half a million—people have taken this training. If a member of your family or a friend, grabbed at his chest, or started choking, or fell and broke an arm you’d have an idea of what to do: Administer first aid and call for medical help. But how about a co-worker or even a relative who suffers with depression, is bi-polar, is ridden with anxiety or even PTSD – whose behavior changes from stable to irrational. Someone who is talking about suicide or harming someone?
WHAT DO YOU DO? WHERE DO YOU TURN? That’s what you learn in this
eight-hour seminar. It provides you with the tools and knowledge of what you can do. The mental health professionals leading the seminar teach you to be aware. To be aware of a person’s change in behavior, how to listen to his/her words and intervene calmly by listening to what’s been said. It teaches us to be calm and reassuring and how to encourage someone to seek professional help. If someone you know appears at risk of harming themselves or others, the mental first aider must find professional help right away, even if the person doesn’t want it. I took this seminar and I recommend it to you. I hope I never need to use what I learned, but if I do, it’s perfectly possible I can make a difference. I may be able to avert a tragedy. In Hillsborough County, the phone number for the National Alliance for Mental Health is 813273-8104. The address is P.O. Box 17856, Tampa, FL 33682. The 24/7 manned line is at the Crisis Center: just dial 211. For groups who want to have a class or join a class, call 813-4194902. The SouthShore Coalition for Mental Health and Aging can cosponsor a class at your house of worship or other location.
In a world filled with numbers and odd combinations of letters, 911 and 211 are the ones that count the most. Every man, woman and child, no matter what language they speak, should be taught these numbers because they are, literally, lifesavers. • Call 911 in an emergency for fire, police, an ambulance or anything in which you need an emergency responder to come to your location. 911 links you immediately with a dispatcher who can send an emergency vehicle to you. (There is also a nonemergency number if no threat is pending: Call 813-247-8200.) • The 211 number is not as well known, but also functions 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It’s the Crisis Center number and caring and trained specialists will answer and help support you or your family through whatever difficult times you may be facing by providing you with emotional support, crisis intervention, and suicide prevention. With 211, people are never alone. For instance, help is available for housing and homelessness, for childcare and early learning, for food and meals, for disaster information. There are even people at 211 who will provide tax return assistance, diabetes health and control, healthcare and insurance and early childhood development. (For those readers of this Resource Guide, if you would like to become a Community Partner or an affiliate of 211Tampa Bay, call 727-210-4239.) There are other -11 numbers that are useful. • 511 will give you emergency and travel information – where the accidents, the highway delays are. • 711 is for people with a hearing or speech disability to use the telephone system by texting to call people with or without disabilities.
Much of the proceeding story was written by Lenny Bernstein of the Washington Post. The coalition reprints with permission.
20 SouthShore COMMUNITY RESOURCE GUIDE
• 811 is a required call for digging projects large and small to avoid underground lines, pipes and cables in your yard or construction site.
Hillsborough Community College
Provides Education Opportunities By Bob Black Dr. Allen Witt has presided over an almost unprecedented student growth at the South County Hillsborough Community College in Ruskin. From 1,500 students at start-up nine years ago, to 8,133 students last year. And it’s still growing. The South County campus, the fourth such campus in Hillsborough, is heavy on the sciences, particularly on the health sciences which are much in demand throughout Florida. For instance, the campus turns out registered nurses in ever increasing numbers and has an agreement with the University of South Florida to move these RNs to BSNs—a full Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Then there’s the ‘emergency’ programs: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) which is the largest vocational program on campus and which is laddered into the next step, Paramedic, from which a student can keep going to
get to the third step: An Associate’s degree in Emergency Medical Services. And are these your typical college kids? No, indeed, says Dr. Witt. The average age of his students is 30, and 40s and 50s are not uncommon, Sun City Center has produced EMT students in their 60s and 70s who take their newfound certifications to the SCC Emergency Squad, a volunteer organization that provides emergency ambulance services in the area.
In the summer of 2016, the South campus began adding criminal justice to the mix, Dr. Witt says, adding that 90 percent of his students are aiming at a four-year degree from one or another of the Florida universities. Also, there is now a staffed Veterans’ desk to help former vets find their benefits. Dr. Witt says SouthShore HCC is offering heavy support and tutoring in mathematics, science, writing and reading skills. Free tuition is offered for Florida Senior Citizens under the Senior Fee Waiver program. Top high school students can also take free classes through the dual enrollment programs. “No one, he says, “Should be turned away.

Services Available in South County from Disabled American Veterans By Bob Black, Coalition for Mental Health and Aging DAV Chapter 110 in Sun City Center is typical of many chapters of the Disabled American Veterans organizations around the county and state that provide actual services to veterans.
The ride-scheduling phone is 813-642-0302, and a meeting with the service officers can be scheduled by calling 813-331-3871. The office is at 1002 Cherry Hills Drive in Sun City Center. If you’re calling for a ride from Ruskin, Sun City Center or Gibsonton, it’s best to call a week ahead of time to ensure a seat in the van. The DAV asks that when scheduling your appointment at the VA, you let them know you’re riding in the van and they will try to make sure the schedules work together. The van drivers and the service officers are all volunteers, so there is no cost to the veterans.
There are two main ongoing services or programs for residents of lower Hillsborough County. The first provides no-cost transportation to ambulatory veterans who have medical appointments at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa. The van makes pickup stops in Ruskin, Sun City Center and Gibsonton every weekday. The second program provides veterans or their spouses/families with information on benefits and services they may be eligible to receive. This program includes the filing or assistance with filing claim forms for benefits as well as helping navigate the VA system. This is important, as many of the forms are for benefits to cover the cost of care needed as a result of a physical decline by either the veteran or the widow/widower. Furthermore, should a veteran need financial help with paying for assistance in dressing, bathing, meal preparation or medication management, these fine volunteers will help.

Where to go for information about services for people with disabilities By Marcia Doscher People with disabilities (or their families and caregivers) who are seeking help or information on what is available should contact The Division of Disability Determinations of the Florida Department of Health. The Division of Disability Determinations makes the decisions on medical eligibility for Florida citizens who apply for disability benefits. Programs such as Social Securi-ty Disability Title II and Supplemental Security Income Title XVI are under the “state medically needy program. These services are also managed by the Adult Protective Services Programs through the Florida Department of Children and Families which monitors and supports case management and in-home services. It sets guidelines for family living arrange-ments such as private homes as an alternative to institutional or nursing home care. Home care for eligible disabled adults provides case
management and a limited subsidy payment intended to offset the cost of housing, food, clothing and expenses re-lated to their medical disability not covered by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance.
