from the editor

CELEBRATING YOUR OWN WAY … NOT NECESSARILY THE PINTEREST WAY As the holidays have become packed with parties, must-haves, must-gives, pageants, parades and intimidating Pinterest posts, November and December have earned the reputation for being the busiest and most overwhelming months of the year. Magazines, including this one, enhance the pressure by filling glossy pages with images of tables sagging with fabulous food, beautiful people at beautiful parties, stockings filled to the brim and someone looking like the happiest person in the world as they open the perfect present. So I’ll start by apologizing for contributing to the chaos on one hand and on the other hand tell you this edition of Bay is filled with images of beautiful people, beautiful parties, beautiful homes and great gifts to give and receive. While that all makes us feel stressed in some ways, it’s also fun to see how others celebrate — and to gather helpful ideas. And let’s face it, the holiday hoopla isn’t changing. There’s no taking the season back to simple popcorn strung on a tree and one small but meaningful gift for each person in your immediate family. But you can change your frame of mind and your expectations. Instead of trying to have three dozen of the prettiest, most complicated creations at the cookie exchange, try to have three meaningful conversations with other guests and catch up with an old friend or make a new one. Your teenage daughter or granddaughter is probably going to roll her eyes at all the clothes you give her unless she ordered them herself, but she might actually enjoy getting hot chocolate at a cool restaurant with you after you promise not to ask about boys or college aspirations. You can spend all of Dec. 24 cooking and sweating or you can pick up several pre-made entrees and spend the day wrapping so you aren’t up past midnight washing dishes and fighting

NOVEMBER 2017

with ribbons that won’t curl. Or better yet, buy gift bags and spend the day enjoying friends and family. As I write this, I think of the best Christmas card we got last year. The picture on the front featured three teens. Two were looking away from the camera and one was looking straight at it but was clearly angry. The dad was smiling and the mom looked like she was telling the kids to shape up. The update on the back made almost every recipient laugh and breathe a sigh of relief. Dad was never home because he travels for work. Oldest son never called from college. Middle son never smiled because of the stress of applying for college. Youngest daughter never thought she’d be so tired of high school as a junior. Mom should have never gone back to school, gotten her master’s degree and started a new job. My friend told me three or four people who received the card were seriously worried about her, but the vast majority made a point of telling her they loved her honesty and it made them feel better about their far-from-perfect life and holidays. As I wear my editor’s hat, I’ll say we really do have a magazine filled with interesting stories about interesting people, including a Jewish woman who has spent 35 years working hard to cook and raise money for the Christmas Toy Shop, which provides gifts to low-income families. As I put on my realist’s hat, I’ll say don’t expect your holiday to be magazine-perfect, but focus on connections with people instead of the chaos. Thank you for reading. — Katherine Snow Smith Have comments, questions? Let us know. Contact Katherine Snow Smith at (727) 409-3642 or kssmith@tampabay.com.

cott Wagman enjoys smoking good cigars when he’s not working as president of HW Properties or supporting local nonprofits. His wife, Beth Houghton, executive director of the Free Clinic, got him interested, he said, to the point that he has a humidor with capacity for 1,000 cigars in their St. Petersburg home. Bay editor Katherine Snow Smith talked with Wagman about cigars, humidors and more.

What I’ve learned over 15 years of smoking cigars, any cigar — cheap or expensive — is it gets better if it sits in a humidity-controlled humidor for at least six months, preferably a year. There is some chemical reaction where any kind of chemical used in the curing practice dissipates.”

SCOTT WAGMAN

Why do you like having a humidor? How much humidity do they need? I keep my humidor at about 70 to 72 percent humidity. If it gets below 55, the cigars are going to crumble and die. So should customers only buy from stores that have humidors? Most good stores have them. If you look around and see stacks and stack of boxes in an air-conditioned shop and don’t see any humidification, the cigars are going to be dried out. Now I’ve bought some boxes at shops in Havana. In some Cuban shops, the humidity is so high they don’t need it. In Florida in summer, the humidity runs 65 to 90, but the heat isn’t good for cigars even if there’s humidity.

A selection of Wagman’s hand-rolled cigars that includes, from left, Montecristo #2, Nat Sherman Host Maduro, CAO Consigliere, Cohiba Robusto and a Drew Estate Undercrown.

You have bought cigars in Cuba, where else do you get them? I buy online. I like Thompson Cigar in Tampa. Rocky Patel makes a cigar called Decade that Cigar Aficionado ranked a 94, which is a great rating. Thompson sells those for about $11 to $12 each. But they also sell them in bundles with no label, and they are less. How did you start smoking cigars? My wife brought back a box of cigars from Honduras (where she went on a church mission trip) about 15 years ago, and I tried them and I liked them. She got me hooked. I’ve never smoked cigarettes in my life. You don’t inhale cigars. But cigars are not a healthy alternative.

At right, the humidor includes drawers that hold loose cigars and shelves that hold cigar boxes. The box of Montecristo #2 cigars is from Cuba. At far right, Wagman with his 1,000-capacity cigar humidor.

What do you like in a cigar? Some taste like burnt hay, not that I’ve ever tasted burnt hay. Cigars have different combinations of nuttiness, oakiness, chocolate. They can be fruity. There are all these subtle flavors. A really good cigar isn’t bitter. It’s just like taking a very smooth swig of single malt Scotch without drinking. The aging is critical, all the bitterness goes away. So what are your favorite cigars? The Rocky Patel Decade is a real killer that I like. Nat Sherman Host is a great one. Romeo Y Julieta is a Cuban cigar I’ve had the privilege of finding and having. I got Montecristos on my second trip to Cuba.

A bottle of hard-to-find Pappy Van Winkle bourbon

38 bay

NOVEMBER 2017

entucky born and reared, Carter McCain knows (more than) a few things about bourbon. Every chapter of his life has a bourbon page, beginning as a toddler watching his mother make chocolate bourbon balls at Christmas. He easily pictures the small distillery that operated on the farm property his father owned in Winchester, near Lexington, where the family lived until he was 16. His memory is less sharp recalling the countless bourbon and Cokes he drank at Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity parties during his University of Florida years. And plenty more while pursuing a juris doctorate at Stetson University College of Law. The McCain Law Firm in South Tampa specializes in private equity and international business transactions. And as a 20-plus year member of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla? Arrrggh, let’s just say he’s downed his share of bourbon grogs. “I’m not an expert on bourbon. I’m an expert on bourbon consumption,” jokes McCain, a thoroughbred racing enthusiast who rarely misses the annual Kentucky Derby. McCain’s taste matured as he started a family of three daughters. These days he favors Woodford Reserve’s Double Oaked and Maker’s Mark Cask, neat or on the rocks, many evenings sipped on the dockmaster’s porch at the Tampa Yacht and Country Club. “There used to be a stigma attached, as an old man’s drink,” he said. “Hardly any liquor stores carried bourbon when I came to Florida.

“Now bourbon is the cool spirit. … Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, premium cocktails because people want a drink full of flavor and bourbon has a full-bodied taste, not unlike red wine,” he said. “A lot of people think of bourbon and Coke and a football game, but it’s so much more than that.” Having always been a bourbon man, sometimes the resurgence surprises McCain. “Since the ’80s when Asia discovered bourbon, it’s on a rocket path, just booming.” Pappy Van Winkle is the hot ticket now, made by Buffalo Trace Distillery. It’s almost impossible to find retail and goes for well over $2,000 at auction, he said. McCain, 54, has traveled the Kentucky Bourbon Trail three times, touring and tasting at least a dozen distilleries. “You watch the product being barreled and bottled, and of course, the countryside between the rivers and farms is absolutely gorgeous. Bardstown is ground zero, and you want to stay at the Jailer’s Inn B & B.” The intricacies of production, barrel preparation and the highly specific aging process, a minimum of two years, continues to fascinate McCain. “All bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon,” he said, launching into the history and the formula mandated by federal law: At least 51 percent corn, plus barley and either rye (spicier) or wheat (sweeter). “No additives allowed. No colors, no flavorings are permitted,” he continued. “Jack Daniels, for example, is filtered through sugar maple charcoal, which is outside the process of being a bourbon.”

Kentucky native Carter McCain says he’s not an expert on bourbon, “just on bourbon consumption,” he said, sipping one of his favorites at the Tampa Yacht & Country Club.

Now bourbon is the cool spirit. … Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, premium cocktails because people want a drink full of flavor and bourbon has a full-bodied taste, not unlike red wine. A lot of people think of bourbon and Coke and a football game, but it’s so much more than that.” CARTER McCAIN

CHRISTMAS BELLES

RINGING IN THE SEASON FOR 55 YEARS BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH PHOTOGRAPHS BY SCOTT KEELER

T

he annual tasting session for the Christmas Belles is a cross between the final night of Top Chef and a girls’ night out. “These are called Lemon Meltaways,” said Deann Coop of shortbread cookies rolled in powdered sugar and lemonade mix. “You know, just a little sprinkle of grated lemon rind on top of those would add some nice color,” commented Iris Salzer. “This looked a lot better on Pinterest,” laughed Sue Knipe, who made jalapeno, cranberry and brie biscuits. “I had to use my 1 1/2-inch biscuit cutter because I looked everywhere this morning and I couldn’t find my 1-inch one.” “I think that’s because it’s at my house,” confessed Judy Holland as the crowd laughed.

Grandma Betty’s Butterscotch cookies, center, were one of the sweet tastes sampled by members of the Christmas Belles.

Look, I was raised that it doesn’t matter if you are black, white, Catholic, Baptist, Jewish. Whatever you are, if you are helping your community, you do it.” IRIS SALZER

For more than 50 years the Christmas Belles have hosted a coffee of great food for 200 or more women. Since 1981, Iris Salzer, who is Jewish, has been one of the Christmas Belles, cooking away and wishing guests Merry Christmas.

“I think they would be better a little smaller. And with a little sprig of thyme on top,” suggested Tina Douglass. “These are paleo and gluten-free,” Martha Buttner said of her creation. “They are made of pear, almond and coconut with cinnamon and nutmeg.” “Do they have to be served in a wrapper? Because that’s a pain. They are going to be all over the house,” Salzer pointed out. The Christmas Belles aren’t cutthroat chefs competing for a grand prize. They aren’t even professional caterers preparing for a big job. They are a committee of 30 women who serve more than 2,000 individual homemade delicacies at an annual Christmas party that brings in hundreds of toys plus $30,000 or more every year for the Christmas Toy Shop. This December will mark the 55th Christmas Belles Coffee, where coffee is an afterthought compared to the food and the setting. Each year, the event takes place at a house that’s big enough to accommodate 250 or more guests. Belles host sometimes, but often ask someone in the community to volunteer their home. The spread of gourmet treats, inside a grand home decorated to the hilt for the holidays, draws guests who donate checks for the Christmas Toy Shop. This almost century-old nonprofit gives more than 2,000 toys to low-income children in Pinellas County, including more than 500 bikes and trikes. The Belles pay from their own pockets, not the funds raised, to rent tables, china, silverware and linens, but bring their personal silver serving platters. Have caterers ever even been considered? “Nooooo,” Ruth Piper, a longtime Belle, said emphatically. Every casserole and salad, and more than a dozen different savories and sweets, are made by hand. Each woman makes 12 to 16 dozen of their assigned items, which change every year. “We would never consider having the same menu,” said Piper. “Would you want to go to the same party year after year?”

Pimento cheese squares were made by Christmas Belles member Lynn Denson.

Thus the tasting session, which is held in September each year to try out new recipes. Out of the 20 new items made by various Belles, four or five are selected to work into the rotation and join past successes. Douglass keeps a list of close to 100 sandwiches, canopies, cookies, bars, tarts, toasts, casseroles and salads and what year each one was served so nothing is repeated too often or forgotten for too long. Open-faced tomato sandwiches and cucumber sandwiches, however, have been awarded a permanent place on the table. “In the years that we didn’t serve them, guests would ask where they were and say, ‘Oh that’s what I always look forward to,’ ”Douglass said. (Also, there is never a crust on any sandwich.) Piper and Salzer, both Belles for around 35 years, mused at how the menu has changed. “There was a time when we’d have lots of casseroles and the more sour cream and cheese the better,” Piper laughed. “Younger people just aren’t eating as much,” Salzer added. “We used to do Jello molds, we could make them very colorful, but now I understand that’s passe.” About five years ago, the words “gluten,” “paleo” and “vegan” started being bandied about planning meetings. Now there are crustless, vegetable quiches and sweets made with almond flour and no eggs in the lineup. Another change is the addition of valet parking. “Some of the girls wear heels this high,” Piper said,

Fig and creme fraiche canapes were made by Deann Coop.

spreading her thumb and forefinger 4 inches apart. “And I don’t think any of the younger girls would ever wear the same thing to a coffee. They get a new outfit,” added Salzer. Then the two women laughed at which green or red cotton shirt they planned to wear this year. Salzer, who is Jewish, has devoted herself to the Christmas Belles ever since she was asked to join the elite hostess group in 1981. “I don’t do bathrooms really well, but I was a pretty good cook,” she recalled. “Look, I was raised that it doesn’t matter if you are black, white, Catholic, Baptist, Jewish. Whatever you are, if you are helping your community, you do it.” (Salzer, a Tampa native, is the sister of former Mayor Sandy Freedman.) “I have enjoyed every minute of it all these years,” Salzer said. Her husband, Stan Salzer, who died last year, even took his turn playing Santa. Belles’ tradition calls for a husband to dress up in the red suit and beard each year and collect toys with a hearty “ho, ho, ho” as guests file into the coffee. One Belle is charged with recruiting a willing actor, but nobody else knows who’s playing the role. “We always have one of the Belles take a shift standing out there with Santa, so one year I did my turn, then went inside the house to the rest of my chores and asked who was playing Santa and people started laughing,” she said. “It was Stan and I had no idea.” Another year, Grace Elizabeth Cooper, who has since passed away, pulled Salzer aside and whispered: “I don’t know what to do. That Santa Claus just patted my behind,” Salzer recounted. “She had no idea it was her own husband, Frank Cooper.”

Public relations and marketing consultant Renee Vaughn and University of Tampa president Ron Vaughn go all out decorating their Tampa home.

f universities awarded degrees in holiday decorating, Ron and Renee Vaughn would graduate summa cum laude. Ron takes an academic approach, optimizing ornaments and allocating assets for a dozen Christmas trees like the business professor he was prior to being named president of the University of Tampa in 1995. Infrastructure and zoning throughout their Beach Park home falls to wife Renee, the “dean of Christmas and a former city transportation planner.

By the end of Thanksgiving weekend, the Vaughns will have gingerbread men climbing up the kitchen tree. Red cardinals will roost on the dining room tree; cats of glass, ceramic and fur will prowl the back porch tree. Mark Roberts limited-edition fairies, elves and Santas, packed away for a year, will be primped and posed, as if they were going to a college reunion. The collection has surpassed 70 pieces. Peppermint-striped balls will adorn the biggest tree, 11 feet high. And pretty soon, an entire gingerbread village will arrive, a gift from university food service provider Sodexho. You can’t miss the minarets, shimmering on the foyer tree, miniatures of the silver onion domes atop the stunning 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel, home to the university since 1933. As the campus is renowned for its Moorish/Turkish architecture, Renee will be forever known for her bear collection. “I probably have a thousand bears,” she said, noting two favorites: A pair of Robert Raikes carved wooden Santa bears and a fluffy Steiff bear reading to his cubs. Since her Oklahoma City high school voted her “Miss Bear” during a basketball season homecoming, the nickname stuck and friends gift her with bears on any occasion. Her bear obsession actually played a role in the couple’s courtship. “I lent about 100 bears to the Victorian Christmas Stroll display at the Henry B. Plant Museum,” she said, an annual fundraiser featuring holiday vignettes throughout the museum wing of Plant Hall. Bears are apropos any time of the year since Col. Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt stayed at the historic hotel in the spring of 1898 en route to Cuba to fight in the Spanish-American War. His nickname launched the iconic toy. Years later, as chairman of the Stroll in 2007, “I was there almost every day,” she said, “and I would run into Ron quite a bit.” The two were well acquainted from her many years on the Board of Fellows (from 1994 continuously to today). “The core success element of a downtown is a university,’’ said Renee, a campus booster from almost the minute she moved to Tampa 30 years ago. She formed her own public relations and marketing business, Williams Consulting Group, in 2003.

President Vaughn joined the UT faculty in August 1984 as the coordinator of the marketing department, later directed the MBA program and was dean of the College of Business and Graduate Studies. His presidency is credited with quadrupling enrollment to 8,900, adding 200 new areas of study and increasing annual revenue tenfold, from $28 million to $280 million. Renee stops just short of labeling him a perfectionist, teasing that “he likes to adjust.” In his “man cave” office, Ron oversees two trees reflecting his love of the outdoors. A shark, barracuda, clown fish and other aquatic ornaments swim on the tree near fishing rods, lures, antique creels and his precious stone collection. Squirrels, hedgehogs and other woodland critters will be dangling from the other tree, in front of a shelf of Hardy Boys books. “And my token bears,” adds Renee. “Whether it’s minarets or bears or fairies or all the other critters, we have a lot of fun decorating together and sharing Christmas with a lot of friends,” said Ron.

Bears are everywhere at the Vaughns’ home, this fellow reading The Night Before Christmas to his cubs is a favorite.

SUCCULENT WREATHS Succulents, little plants with fleshy leaves and stems that store water, have been around since ancient times, but are now experiencing huge popularity largely because of social media pictures of the pretty, low-maintenance cuties. This holiday season you can think outside of the little ceramic containers they usually come in and try a succulent wreath for your front door. O’Berry’s Succulents hosts workshops throughout the year for enthusiasts and novices to make wreaths, candle boxes, terrariums and more. Creations can last six months with proper care. 50 shades of the

little black dress BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH PHOTOGRAPHS BY CHRIS URSO

Ruffled, embroidered, strapless, off the shoulder, low cut, high neck, open back, lace, satin, velvet, silk. There are so many versions of the little black dress that women can express their own style no matter how many are at a party. Complement a black dress with a bauble from Tiffany & Co. and it’s even more distinctive. The newly relocated Tiffany store at International Plaza seemed like the perfect place to present a few favorite black dresses. The store’s exterior channels the look of the granite and limestone store at Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in New York City that opened in 1940. The Tampa store’s interior has American Deco style with polished black granite, marble, walnut paneling, crystal chandeliers and gold accents. The trademark Tiffany blue threads its way through the store with accents on the floor, lighting and textiles. Tampa Bay’s first Tiffany & Co. debuted elsewhere in the mall when International Plaza opened in 2001. The new store has more retail space, including two private sales salons.

This will be the first holiday season since Tiffany introduced its HardWear Collection (at right) in May. The designers were inspired by the construction of New York City with pieces channeling building beams, wrecking balls and more. “It’s modern, it’s edgy, it’s bold,” explained Jonathan Bruckner, Tiffany’s vice president for the southeast. “There are great layers in this collection where you can kind of mix and match.” Certain pieces offer versatility in how they can be worn, such as long or short, single- or double-wrapped. With pieces in sterling or gold and some with diamonds, there’s something for a wide range of customers “whether you are someone starting off building your jewelry wardrobe or adding to it,” he said.

sophisticated There’s really no need to check your reflection if you’re wearing this dress and these shoes because you can trust that your look is flawless. T

ampa Bay residents who decorate and open their homes to the public for holiday tours provide an annual activity that helps everyone get in the spirit and gather decor tips. The real purpose of holiday home tours, however, isn’t so we can all snoop a little inside beautiful homes, it’s to raise money for nonprofit organizations. The Florida Orchestra Guild raised more than $25,000 through its tour of homes on Snell Isle last year and has a goal of $35,000 this year, according to co-chair Bette Dolinsky. There will be performers in each house, some from the orchestra, entertaining guests as they tour the homes. Dolinsky moved from Syracuse to St. Petersburg several years ago and knows firsthand how vital an orchestra is to a community. Financial problems forced the struggling Syracuse Orchestra to restructure in 2011. “We were very involved in the orchestra there,” she said. “It was quite an eye-opener. They need every cent they get. Once you lose your arts you lose your ability to recruit major businesses.” Music also played an even more vital role in her

personal life after her husband had a stroke five years ago. “There was a point when he was in a wheelchair and he couldn’t talk but he could get up and march to the music,” Dolinsky recounted. After working with a physical and musical therapist, her husband, Joseph, is now speaking with no problems and walking with a cane. Proceeds from the Old Hyde Park Home tour support Hyde Park Preservation, which works to ensure the preservation and beautification of the historic Tampa neighborhood. This year’s tour features six homes, spanning 100 years between the oldest and newest, including a newly constructed house on Bayshore Boulevard with a historic feel.

Tree tips & trends

Lights, ribbons, tinsel, flowers — how do you get that perfect look? Bay creative director Pegie Stark asked designer Ken Neddo of Classic Florals in St. Petersburg to help with this yearly decorating event.

What do you see as the general trends in Christmas tree decor overall and around the state? Most of what we saw at market (wholesale market for retailers and designers) was the “lodge look.” This incorporates elements such as birch logs, furry animals, berries, pine cones, with true red as the main color.

What about Florida? We got a lot of requests for “Coastal Christmas” last year. Since it is currently our No. 1 requested look for yearround florals, we feel that it will be in very high demand for Christmas again this year.

Are old decorations back? Like bubble lights and big bulbs? I think that old-time decor will always be in style. To a lot of people, the holidays are a time to rekindle old associations with family and friends or just fond memories of days past. Old decor can do that. However the trend in lights is definitely LED lighting and a big new trend are rice lights. These are the small lights frequently sold in short stings that are battery operated. The effect on a tree is breathtaking. They provide a very even display of lights and give the effect of tiny stars peeking out of the tree.

What about colored trees? Or silver trees? Colored trees and silver trees can provide a great effect. They are very much a personal judgment call. I utilized a chartreuse green tree once and decorated it with black and silver. The look was amazing, but would probably not be for every home.

Are ribbons on trees still a trend? Yes. Ribbon can add a texture and element to a tree that

cannot be achieved any other way. Wired ribbons allow you to make loops and tucks that create movement. I try to always use at least three different styles and sizes of ribbon in every tree.

What is the most unusual thing you have used when decorating a Christmas tree? I have used fishing poles with lures and bobbers. I did one with car tires. I have seen model ships used. One year, I made one out of clear plastic and packing tape, which required a fan to stay inflated — not one of my more successful projects.

If you had the dream tree to decorate what would be on it? Some of my favorite trees have been done with more natural elements such as hops vines, butterflies, birds, berries, fragrant herbs and flowers. Some of the origins of the Christmas tree go back to celebrating the end of long winter nights and looking forward to warmth returning to the world. I love to garden, so things of the earth always appeal to me.

What is on your tree that you have at home? Every year my tree is different at home. I usually buy stuff throughout the year that I think might inspire me for Christmas and the final cut doesn’t happen until I pull the 80plus totes out of the attic to start the project.

What is the simplest tree you have ever seen? Well that would be Charlie Brown’s tree with one lone ornament and no needles. My neighbors always put up one of those 1950s silver trees. They used one ornament on each of the limbs and an old rotating color wheel spotlight. It was always beautiful.

STEP BY STEP: Step 1: What should you do first after getting your tree in the stand, with plenty of water? Sugar water? Bleach in the water? I would recommend using one of the tree preservatives available on the market. Sugar water promotes bacterial growth and bleach is not always easy to deal with. Marketed retail products are generally safe and easy to work with. I will say there are a lot of artificial trees that are amazingly real-looking. They are much less problematic and usually come pre-lit. Just a thought.

Step 2: Where do you put it? Ideally, a tree should be placed out of sunlight and away from warm drafts but let’s face it, this is a showpiece, so put it where you want and make sure to keep it watered. Keep in mind it will likely become a fire hazard by the end of the season.

Step 3: What do you start with? Lights? If lights, how do you put them on so the wires are not showing? Lights are always first. You can wrap the trunk very heavily with lights, LED work well for this, it gives the tree the effect of glowing from within. To really make this work well I would recommend about 150 to 200 lights per foot. This can also be a super cool effect if you use one color of lights in the center and another color on the branches. Regular Christmas light strands have become so inexpensive you could bring the wires under the branches and use electrical ties to hold them in place, work the lights through the needles, and at the end of the season throw them out with the tree. If you choose the more traditional method, I suggest starting the lights at the trunk, run the strand to the end of the branch, then back down to the trunk and out the next branch. Just wrapping around the tree at the tips of the branches looks ridiculous.

Step 4: What comes next?

Step 5: What’s next?

I usually do ribbon next. I like three to five bows at the top incorporating multiple ribbons. I use long tails of ribbon. Some people bring those straight down , but I prefer to weave through the branches. I also use multiple bows throughout the tree. These set up focal areas that I can then develop by using other elements such as flowers, feathers, holiday picks, etc. I like to run ribbon through the entire tree as a pathway to carry your eye. The large mesh ribbon, sold at craft stores in 18-inch rolls, is a great product if wadded and stuffed into the tree. It comes in many colors and creates a wonder effect with light shinning both through it and on it.

I like to work from the inside of the tree out. The next thing I usually do is large ornaments 6-inches to 8-inches in diameter. I recess them into the tree not at the end of branches. After that, I work on focal points in the tree. The bows usually help determine those. I start by putting bows at the top. If you have a tree topper, put it on and make the top of the tree the main focal point by adding florals, etc. Then start building focal points on down the tree. An easy method is to build out from the bows or incorporate things such as angels, Santas, Teddy bears, etc., laying them on the branches. I don’t do a lot with garland, but that would be a next step. After that, I fill in with ornaments. My goal is to fill in empty spaces and try to distribute them evenly on the tree. Last but not least is the tree skirt. This does not necessarily have to be a skirt. Buffalo snow works great as do interesting pieces of fabric. Have fun with that.

How much ribbon? You can estimate: 7 ½-foot tree, 12 yards, 9-foot tree, 14 yards, 10-foot tree, 16 yards.

NOVEMBER 2017

THE REST OF THE HOUSE: I know decorating a whole house for Christmas is a huge job, but do you have a guideline, like if you go over-the-top on your tree, should you downplay the rest of the house? Decorating the rest of the house I think depends on a lot of factors. If you are planning on entertaining during the holidays my rule of thumb is to have holiday anywhere you plan for your guests to be. The dining area is a must. Be creative. I have seen some amazing chandeliers decorated, chair backs and centerpieces. Simple things in the bathroom such as a glass cylinder with ornaments and a sprig of evergreen sitting next to a scented candle is nice. Pine boughs on the cocktail table with a bow, ornaments and a candle can work. The key is use a constant theme throughout the house. Holiday is not a year-round decor, so if it doesn’t match a particular room that is less of a problem. If you are more of a just-the-family for the holidays, a little less over-the-top is fine, but let’s be honest, Christmas is all about the magic of the season.

T

hough he was poised to help run one of the oldest premium cigar companies in the country, Eric Newman, president of J.C. Newman Cigar Co., didn’t smoke one of his family’s high-end brands when he tried his first cigar at age 18. “It’s not a very sexy story. I was a pledge in my fraternity and they locked us in the closet and we had to smoke a cigar — a King Edward,” said Newman, 69, laughingly describing the incident from his freshman year at the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. The following summer he started selling cigars for the family business and tried smoking a higher-quality brand. His own father didn’t have a smooth entree into cigar smoking either. “My father went to the Army Air Corps in World War II and his father (company founder J.C. Newman) sent him a box of cigars to smoke. He had to go through the first box before he could smoke one without getting sick,” Eric Newman said. When Eric Newman’s son, Drew (the fourth generation to work for the Ybor City-based company), turned 18 and was old enough to light up, his father made sure it was a Cuesta-Rey, one of J.C. Newman’s most popular brands, sold in 61 countries on six continents. Drew, a recent law school graduate from American University in Washington, D.C., is the company’s legal counsel and is also spearheading a new cigar called the American. “He came up with this cockamamie idea to hand roll a cigar in our historic Ybor City factory that is 100 percent American, totally made with American tobacco, filler, binder, wrapper, everything,” Eric Newman, 69, said. “This thing is such an expensive project, it’s crazy. But he’s committed. It’s probably going to be available before Christmas.” Most tobacco for premium cigars (which are handmade with whole leaves) comes from Nicaragua, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and elsewhere in the Caribbean. But all the tobacco for the American, three kinds of leaves, will hail from U.S. crops. The filler is grown by the Mennonites in Pennsylvania, the binder comes from Connecticut and the wrapper is grown in Clermont. Florida was once a leading grower of tobacco, but no leaves

have been harvested here since the 1970s. Jeff Borysiewicz, owner of Corona Cigar Co., is changing that by perfecting crops in Clermont. Corona Cigar has stores in Orlando and Tampa Bay, as well as a big online presence, and will be the first to carry the American, Eric Newman said. It will probably sell for around $20 a stick. Another partnership within the cigar industry that’s very important to Newman is the one his company formed 15 years ago with the Dominican Republic-based Arturo Fuente company, which grows tobacco and makes cigars. The two companies’ Cigar Family Charitable Foundation has built two schools, a medical clinic and a sports facility in the Dominican Republic. “It is in the middle of one of the most impoverished regions of the country. We’ve served over 5,000 children and their families,” Newman said. “And 80 percent of (the students) so far go to college.” Newman, who usually smokes one cigar a week beyond sampling blends at work, said picking his favorite cigar is like a parent having to pick their favorite child. When pressed, he said it would probably be the Diamond Crown Julius Caeser, a cigar named after his grandfather, Julius Caeser Newman. That’s where the J.C. in the company name comes from. His grandfather, Julius Caeser Newman, started the company in 1895 with $50 borrowed to buy tobacco and a table for rolling made from old planks. At that time, there were 42,000 licensed cigar manufacturers in the United States. Today, J.C. Newman Cigar Co. is considered the only one still owned and operated by the founding family, Newman said. Eric Newman doesn’t have a favorite drink to go with his cigars but likes Glenfiddich Scotch and Johnny Walker Blue Label. “We raise money throughout the year (for the foundation) at cigar dinners. I was at one in New York and I bid on something I’d never heard of, Pappy Van Winkle,” he recounted, and said he bought the bottle of bourbon for $2,500. “I was flying home and couldn’t take it with me,” he said, so I poured some for everyone at the table and I kept the bag.”
