CHARITABLE WORK FROM BAY EDITOR SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN Fall is when Tampa Bay’s social season kicks into high gear. It’s the start of a monthslong series of gala events, many of them held by charities and other nonprofits. They can be great fun — it’s a chance to dress up, mingle, enjoy a fine dinner and bid on exotic trips or luxury spa treatments at a live auction.
77 TAMPA BAY CHARITY REGISTER ▲
Your guide to the local social scene, charitable organizations and their primary fundraising activities.
The purpose, of course, is to raise money for worthy causes. So Bay is proud to introduce its first Charity Register. In it you’ll find dozens of listings of charitable events from this month through next October. We encourage you to save it as a handy reference and also to visit tampabay.com/bay to view our online calendar of fundraisers. The Tampa Bay area is fortunate to have so many people who give generously for the betterment of our community. One is Judy Genshaft, president emerita of the University of South Florida, who with her husband donated $20 million for the new honors college building named after her. You’ll find a story on that in this issue along with fashions we photographed there. Another USF benefactor is Dr. Kiran Patel, who donated more than $30 million for the Patel Center for Global Solutions and College of Global Sustainability. Carol and Frank Morsani have also contributed millions to USF, including to the Health College of Medicine that bears their name. The list goes on. Many of Broadway’s biggest hits come to the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa. Your favorite comedians and musicians might appear at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Catch a new art exhibit in the Hazel Hough Wing of St. Petersburg’s Museum of Fine Arts, or at the nearby James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art, founded by Tom and Mary James. I’ve undoubtedly overlooked some of those who have helped shape the Tampa Bay area into the cultural and educational center it is. But just look around and you’ll recognize the names.

It seems that more and more people want holiday and outdoor lighting. Is that right? As LED has become more popular and more of a staple in the lighting world, outdoor lighting has become more popular. A lot has to do with the products — they’re easier and safer to use, there’s less energy consumption, there’s greater availability. When I started out 20 years ago there was one national franchise doing things in this holiday space. Now there are three or four national franchise brands and multiple manufacturers in this industry, which continues to grow and develop.
two days. We’re bringing our van, sometimes our trailer, ladder, tools, equipment, so it’s not just one person with a ladder hanging some personal stuff out of the garage.
When does your holiday work start? It seems it never goes away. You start getting calls in mid-July, August: “Hey, I’m thinking about doing something different this year, can you come out and take a look?” On some of the bigger projects, like municipal clients, we hear from them in March. There are some big-ticket things and new technology things that if we don’t have them sorted out by April they won’t happen in the fall because they’ve got to come from overseas. You don’t get a 35-foot, fully automated tree off the shelf. Your website says your minimum price for a house is $5,000. Wow, that seems like a lot! It is a lot of money to your average family like mine, just a blue-collar, hard-working family on a budget, but we’re trying to develop a high-quality service with a high-quality look that has our brand on it. We’re coming with a full crew of five to eight people for one or
What do you get for $5,000? For the average three-bedroom, two-bath home, 2,000 to 2,500 square feet, we’re going to outline the roof, do all the palm trees, do all the shrubs, the flower beds, flood(lights) against the house. We’re going to put up garlands and wreaths and create what we call the “postcard picture” so you can drag your family out and stand in front of your house and have your picture taken. Anything else? We furnish the entire project turnkey. Here’s what people really love: We guarantee it will stay on, we service it throughout the season. They’re having a social event on the weekend, we’re going to come out on the Friday before and check everything out. If our customer looks good, we look good. Then we come back out in January and take everything down. Do people prefer colored or white lights? And what are some of the trends in holiday lighting and decor? White lights are the most popular. They are classic and elegant and always will be. The ability to change colors is becoming more popular. Technology is starting to make that a little more consistent and easier to use. Icicles used to be really, really popular but they’ve kind of come and
gone. Rope lighting for a long time was very popular — every beach bar had rope lighting strung throughout — but now it’s associated with being outdated and we haven’t installed it for a long time. Wire-framed displays used to be popular but now they are being replaced by blow-up inflatables. People like them because they’re super small in the garage but they look kind of silly during the day (when they are deflated) so we don’t use them. Are people getting lights for other holidays? Halloween has become very popular in the home-decorating thing. If you look at the size of displays in retailers, it used to be just one dinky section. Now they have a huge area that’s all Halloween decor. For us, it started out as, “Hey, do you do this?” “Not exactly,” but we did this for this customer and it kind of grew. Is there an element of keeping up with the Joneses when one family goes all out on holiday lighting? There’s big proof of that. We notice that when we start doing it in one neighborhood we have a tendency to do more than one project. We do a lot in Snell Isle, the Old Northeast, Bayshore (in Shore Acres). What prompts people to get their homes covered in lights — nostalgia for childhood Christmases, impressing the neighbors or what? We can answer in many different ways but it all leads back to this: People like to decorate for the holidays because deep down it gives them joy.

spots of tea BY MICHELLE STARK There are few dining experiences that feel more elegant than afternoon tea. Even though we’re far from England, there are places around the Tampa Bay area that offer an enchanting tea experience. Here are five to check out.
14 | bay
Joseph’s Tea Room Don’t let the location turn you away: This Clearwater tea room’s spot in a strip mall off U.S. 19 belies the charm that can be found inside. With bright turquoise walls, colorful teapots adorning shelves and gold accents throughout, this family-owned company offers a solid option for afternoon (or anytime) tea. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Joseph’s Tea Room has a full tea service for $38 — and a deluxe one that includes two glasses of Champagne per person and chocolate-covered strawberries for $50. There’s also an a la carte menu from which guests can order sandwiches, salads and even more sweet treats. The tea service includes a pot of tea to start, and guests can choose from more than 75 tea flavors, which the Josephs source themselves. The first course is a berry salad, topped with a sweet dressing and walnuts. From there, each guest chooses a whole sandwich and a half sandwich, which is a nice way to try more than one from the large menu. The chicken salad is delicious. The sandwiches are served on a tiered tray with scones, tea biscuits and other assorted sweets that rotate often. Make good use of the organic jam and Devonshire cream, which are served on the side and pair beautifully with the scones and tea biscuits. Owner Shannon Joseph said it’s her goal to not have anyone leave hungry after the tea service, and that certainly seems doable given the portions.

Joseph’s is a family-owned and family-run business, with Shannon Joseph manning this location and her husband Guerby Joseph running their tea bar, which recently opened at 1153 Main St. in Dunedin. Shannon’s mom makes most of the savory items from scratch, and the majority of the baked goods are made in-house, too. Food allergies are top of mind here, so you’ll find vegan cupcakes, tons of gluten-free items and more to accommodate as many diners as possible. Reservations are required, and children under 4 are not allowed. Joseph’s Tea Room: 25028 U.S. 19 N, Clearwater; 352-679-1339. Joseph’s Tea Bar: 1153 Main St., Dunedin; 727-788-1085. josephstea.com.

Every Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m., this gorgeous restaurant just outside downtown Tampa hosts an afternoon tea. There are two options here. The Champagne Tea, which is $55, includes an assortment of sweet and savory bites, plus scones with sweet cream and house preserves. To drink, guests can choose a tea and also a glass of Champagne. There’s also the Afternoon Tea for $45, which is the same minus the booze. They also offer a Children’s Tea for $20, which includes kid-friendly almond butter and banana finger sandwiches, grilled cheese finger sandwiches, scones, desserts and a choice of tea. You can’t beat the setting at Oxford Exchange, which is open till 5 p.m. every day and offers a robust menu that includes a weekend brunch. With tall ceilings, tons of natural light and a black-and-white tile floor that’s reminiscent of a European cafe, it’s a lovely place to while away an afternoon. When you’re finished with your tea experience, stick around and visit the Champagne Bar, where you can opt for a flight of bubbly, or peruse the bookstore. 420 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. oxfordexchange. 813-253-0222.

Tea service at the Fenway Hotel in Dunedin is part of the hotel’s series of various events. Photo by Michelle Stark
16 | bay
You may not associate this iconic south St. Petersburg restaurant with afternoon tea, but the British influence is strong here: Owner Helen Lund bought the restaurant in 1951, and her son Everett took over in 1983 with his wife Jillian Lund Frers, who was born in England. They’ve set up in the back dining room a collection of tea sets and lovely chinaware, a sweet ambience for the daily tea service. It starts with a pot of unlimited English tea served with matching teacups and saucers. Then comes the two-tier server, stacked with dainty sandwiches including classic cucumber tea sandwiches, plus options including chicken or egg salad. There are also scones served with clotted cream and jam, and confections that have included things like petits fours, macarons and mousse. Reservations for afternoon tea must be made at least 48 hours in advance. The cost is $35 per person, $25 for ages 16-11, $20 for ages 10 and below.

Fenway Hotel

Dunedin’s boutique hotel provides a lovely setting for afternoon tea. The tea service isn’t available all the time, but rather as part of the hotel’s series of various events. In the past, they’ve offered teas for special occasions like Mother’s Day. Check the Fenway’s event calendar for exact days and times, but they are typically held monthly. At a recent tea we attended, the menu was a nice mix of savory bites and sweet morsels. To start, we were offered a glass of bubbly and lavender vanilla scones. Then, our choice of a caffeinated or caffeinefree tea, which the servers poured from colorful teapots. They kept the tea flowing throughout the service. Next came a three-tiered stand loaded with goodies: crab ravigote on endive, wild mushroom en croute and curried chicken salad profiteroles. Just the right size, the small bites were nourishing but not too filling. We needed to save room for what came next: another three-tiered tray with assorted tea cookies, macarons and chocolate tulips with strawberry mousse — a nice twist on chocolate-covered strawberries. Our tea took place in the hotel’s HEW Parlor and Chophouse, an upscale restaurant that is otherwise open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Full of natural light and blue
The Vinoy Resort and Golf Club The Vinoy recently started offering a service that highlights its history — and its high tea service. The historic hotel is a fun place to peruse, and even better when a docent can lead you around on a one-hour walking tour that showcases old photos and memorabilia. After the tour comes the main event: a high tea service on the hotel’s mezzanine featuring a pot of tea, finger sandwiches, scones and desserts. The desserts are made by the Vinoy’s pastry team and come from Lottie, the new French bakery in the lobby. A nice touch during this tea service: The food and tea are served with historic silver found during a renovation. The tour and tea experience is available from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and costs $109 per person ($55 for children 12 and under). 501 Fifth Ave. NE, St. Petersburg. 727-404-5251.

LASTING LEGACY BY DIVYA KUMAR
D
uring Judy Genshaft’s two decades as president of the University of South Florida, it grew into one of the nation’s top public universities and research institutions. As if that legacy isn’t enough, Genshaft’s name is now on one of the most beautiful buildings on the Tampa campus. Jump-started with a $20 million donation from Genshaft and her husband, Steven Greenbaum, the $56 million, 85,000-square-foot Judy Genshaft Honors College opened in May. The building, site of this month’s Bay fashion shoot, was designed with input from students, who wanted abundant light, and from faculty, who wished for more space to meet with students.

To that end, the building features 39 “learning lofts” with a white oak exterior that hang over a spacious atrium. No two lofts have the same design. “The interweaving of the beams connect, each locked in a manner that symbolizes how our students connect with creative ideas and pursuits,” said Genshaft, USF’s president from 2000 to 2019. “And they come out in different directions rather than following a straight line.” The college’s new home also has classrooms referred to as sandboxes, with movable desks and walls that can be written on. Other features include soundproof recording studios for podcasts, music practice rooms and a professional kitchen named in honor of Genshaft’s mother, Leona Genshaft. It is used for classes and to bring regional and celebrity chefs in for demonstrations. A shaded outdoor atrium offers space for speakers and events. And while other spaces are just for the honors program, a Buddy Brew on the first floor is open to
everyone on campus. Over 127 types of panels make up the building’s facade. Rooted more than 130 feet into the ground, the structure was the creation of Thom Mayne, winner of the Pritzker Prize in Architecture in 2005. His design company, Morphosis, partnered with the local firm FleischmannGarciaMaslowski Architecture. The honors program has more than 2,500 students, about three-fourths from Florida with 16% from out of state and 9% from other countries including India, Vietnam and Brazil. They are pursuing degrees in fields ranging from the arts and sciences to engineering, nursing, public health and business. Before now, honors students had been in buildings scattered across campus. “Your spirit will live in this building forever,” Will Weatherford, a former speaker of the Florida House, told Genshaft at the grand opening. “You are in the heart of this facility.”

HOME S
MIDCENTURY
MARVEL STORY BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN
IN 1954, architect William B. Harvard Sr. built a house for his family, designing it with features influenced by Florida’s climate and terrain. It had wide overhangs to keep out the direct sun, vents, jalousies and louvered transoms to allow the free flow of air. And, in what can now be seen as a prescient move, it sat at one of the highest points in St. Petersburg.

The living room of the midcentury home, which is on the market for $1.799 million, has an original 1954 map of the world.
Members of the Harvard family have lived in the house ever since. For the first time in nearly 70 years, it is on the market, currently priced at $1.799 million. Situated on a third of an acre in Allendale Terrace, the 3,288-square-foot house overlooks leafy Allendale Park from the front and is surrounded on the other three sides by mature trees and foliage. It was built on a split level because of its unusually hilly site, more than 30 feet above sea level. “This is where we used to come for hurricanes,” recalls Billy Harvard, a Southern Roots Realty agent and the architect’s

grandson, who grew up in low-lying Snell Isle. The senior Harvard was a renowned architect who designed St. Petersburg’s inverted Pier, the city’s main public library, the Williams Park Bandshell and the Pasadena Community Church, the latter with a folding roof hailed as one of the nation’s most striking examples of midcentury religious architecture. He also designed private homes, more than 20 of which are still standing in Snell Isle, Bahama Shores, Allendale, Pinellas Point and on the beaches. For his own residence, Harvard eschewed the Mediterranean Revival style so popular
at the time and designed the four-bedroom, four-bath house with clean lines and many unusual features. The front door is covered in copper aged to a rich patina, and the adjacent window is made of rare, cross-reeded pattern glass. The living room has a soaring, angled ceiling and a passthrough to a bar in the kitchen, a convenience when the Harvards hosted their many cocktail parties and piano recitals. A guest book that still sits on the baby grand piano includes the signatures of St. Petersburg mayors and other prominent locals. Adding to the time capsule feel are an original George Nelson starburst clock and a 1954 map of
the world in remarkably good condition for its age. Most of the walls in the home are paneled in the original cypress and mahogany, giving the house a warm, cozy feel. Original builtins abound — a loft bed, a bathroom vanity, a buffet in the dining room, shelving in the den. The main bedroom has his and her dressing rooms and a hidden door to the attic. Much of the flooring is the original black vinyl tile. Some aspects of the house have been updated. It has central air conditioning, new kitchen appliances and a redesigned pool and patio area. For the most part, though, it looks much as it did when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president, “I Love Lucy” was the big hit on TV and gas cost 21 cents a gallon. It’s the type of house loved by “that niche group of people,” Billy Harvard said. “We know there is a buyer out there.”
The black cabinet is original to the house, which was built in 1954.
The kitchen area has its original jalousie windows.

he Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, which opened in 2021, showcases founder-philanthropist Rudy Ciccarello’s superb collection of furniture, artwork and more. Spanning a period from about 1890 to 1930, the movement was characterized by simplicity in design, hand craftsmanship and depictions of the natural world. The museum, St. Petersburg’s newest museum and the world’s only one dedicated to the Arts and Crafts movement, is housed in a stunning structure with skylights, a grand atrium and a spiral staircase. The collection extends over five floors and is well worth the price of admission. No ticket is needed for the gift shop, which offers an enticing array of items to suit almost every interest and age group. Some items are made exclusively for the shop, like the jewelry fashioned of vintage fabrics by Isabelle Jewelry Design. After shopping, stop by the museum’s airy cafe for a mimosa or sangria and a bite to eat.

xercise while lying down — it’s a thing. And it works. In Pilates,
participants often recline on an apparatus called a reformer that uses a system of weight-bearing pulleys and springs to build muscle and strength with fluidity rather than power. The exercises also can be done on other machines and on the floor with mats. The workout is a popular method for helping to relieve stress, tone muscles and increase flexibility.
Ladden opened her studio in 2020. She offers private sessions and small group classes.
“I got into Pilates in my 20s because I have a slight scoliosis and my back would go out once a week,” said Amy Ladden, owner of Aladden Pilates in St. Petersburg.
and-a-half-year program,” she said. “Then I sold my dining room furniture and put Pilates equipment in my New York City loft apartment so I could teach at night.”
never done so little movement and sweated so much,” he said. “I have gained a lot of flexibility and I have also gained stability, which is something I never had.”
While living in New York and working in the fashion industry, Ladden was “a selfproclaimed gym rat, doing step classes, treadmill and weight lifting, and on weekends I was a tennis warrior.” But nothing relieved her back pain until she started extension exercises using Pilates equipment.
After 10 years, she moved to St. Petersburg to help care for her mother.
Latigo, who works from home in the insurance industry, said he worries about losing strength in his legs because he often has to sit at his desk for long periods of time.
“Most people like myself discover Pilates because they have chronic pain,” said Ladden, 62. “While we focus on whatever nags them, we’re also focusing on the rest of the body.” Though still working full time, Ladden decided to get certified as a Pilates instructor through the Toronto-based Stott Pilates program, which has training locations in the U.S. and Canada. “It was a grueling two-
“I planned on exhaling and just taking care of my mother — but it’s hard for a New York person to exhale,” she said. She started looking for a studio “and found this charming little renovated schoolhouse and it seemed like kismet.” She opened in 2020 in the old North Ward Secondary School on Fourth Street North at 11th Avenue. Today, she offers private sessions with clients as well as group classes of up to three participants. St. Pete Beach resident Javier Latigo, 62, has been going to Ladden’s studio two to three times a week since he attended an open house there shortly after the opening. “I have
“It was getting to the point that I was starting to get up and I was getting to that little creaking point,” he said. Working out while lying on the Pilates reformer and a “Cadillac,” a fixed table that resembles a bed with a frame, Latigo said he has improved his balance, flexibility and overall strength. Aladden Pilates clients range in age from their 20s to 80s, with most being in their 50s. Many older fitness-seekers are drawn to Pilates because unlike running, tennis and some aerobics programs, it is low-impact.

When you keep your muscle structure supporting your joints, it can pull a lot of stress off the joints. — STEPHANIE CRANK, 54, BALLET DANCER
A new-client promotion has three private lessons for $189. Group classes are $45 per person.
”
“I’m worth it,” Latigo said. “When you take into account how long people live now, I am willing to pay that to feel as good as I do right now.” Many professional athletes have reported using Pilates to build strength and improve the mechanics of their sports. Domestic maven and entrepreneur Martha Stewart recently credited Pilates with helping her get in shape to appear on the cover of a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue at the age of 81. The fitness regimen is named for Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer who developed the method and equipment to help other prisoners interred with him in WWI and later soldiers recovering in hospitals. In the 1920s, he and wife Clara emigrated to New York, where they opened a “bodyconditioning gym” to teach their method. It was particularly popular among dancers who needed the flexibility and strengthbuilding techniques to recover from injuries or improve their performance. That’s how Tampa resident Stephanie Crank, 54, became a Pilates devotee. A ballet dancer for companies including the Oregon Ballet Theatre, Cincinnati Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, she started Pilates after she was sidetracked for four weeks with a back injury suffered during a performance. “When I got back into the theater for rehearsals, I was absolutely shocked at how I was able to just jump back in,” she said. “I was jumping higher and turning better. I still had an injury but Pilates just made my body more balanced and stronger.” Crank moved to Florida and opened Pilates Movement Studio in Tampa 20 years ago. Today, she offers private sessions, a new-

student package at $195 and group classes starting at $40. She considers Pilates “a postural rebalancing.” “The reason that it is so effective in all these ways is because it revises the posture so that it puts much less stress on the muscles overall,” she said, noting that it targets deeper muscles that aren’t traditionally the focus of routine gym workouts. “When you keep your muscle structure supporting your joints, it can pull a lot of stress off the joints.”
to 12 students at a time. “I just wanted to retain the flexibility and balance that I have at this age,” said Daigle. “Over the years I have done everything from teaching aerobics to running a marathon, and honestly, exercising while lying down in a climate-controlled room sounded like just the ticket to me.”

BY CINDY COCKBURN iami is thriving, and getting set to sizzle even more from Dec. 8-10. That’s when it again hosts Art Basel Miami Beach, an international event that draws more than 60,000 art lovers, major collectors and others to the Miami Beach Convention Center to celebrate the themes of “Art, Networking and Conversation.’’ Nearly 280 galleries will display the highest quality artworks across all media — from painting and sculpture to photography and digital works — by artists ranging from early-20th century Modern pioneers to contemporary practitioners. Included for the first time will be galleries from Egypt, the Philippines, Iceland and Poland. In all, 72 countries will be represented at the event, which is often hailed as one of the world’s best art fairs on a circuit that includes Hong Kong and Switzerland. Celebrities abound. Past attendees have included actor Leonardo DiCaprio, tennis star Serena Williams and billionaire Bernard Arnault, head of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Sales at the fair have included a $20 million Picasso and the $4 million “Charlie Brown” by British graffiti artist Banksy. With global art sales rebounding to pre-pandemic levels (an estimated $67.8 billion last year), this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach promises to be an exciting event.

Pedro Hernandez, Tracey Jones, Damian Stuck, Rojo the Artis, Jerry Rodriguez, Courtney Pasterchick, Chase Parker, Wai Ching Shroeder and Steve Delong. Art Basel Miami Beach will also reprise its free “conversations” by prominent cultural figures and live debates on “how to make the art world a more caring place.” Nova, a gallery near the convention center, is designed to showcase never-before-seen work fresh from the artists’ studios. And don’t miss the Miami Design District. It’s here that you’ll find things like a Louis Vuitton foosball table for $87,000.

Insiders rave about the jaw-dropping waterfront setting and extravagant surf-andturf dishes at the elegant steakhouse KLAW, located at 1737 N Bayshore Drive. Steaks range from $84 to $430. If you’re in Wynwood, Joey’s Italian Cafe is an affordable choice. The restaurant at 2506 NW Second Ave. was named one of the top new U.S. pizza restaurants in Food & Wine magazine. SWAN, at 90 NE 39th St. in the Miami Design District, offers Mediterranean cuisine and a bar in a leafy space with a sidewalk cafe. You might be in for a celeb sighting since hospitality mavens David Grutman and Pharrell Williams are owners.

At Cafe La Trova at 971 SW Eighth St., James Beard award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein has created a contemporary twist on Cubanstyle dishes. The best part? Live music. And for another upscale dining adventure, check out The Dirty French Steakhouse at 1200 Brickell Ave. Reservations are suggested 30 days in advance.
Accommodations Hotels book months in advance and the prices are sky high, so locals recommend trying Airbnb. The Ritz-Carlton is always at the center of Art Basel action, and rooms can be $3,000 a night. The luxurious Mandarin Oriental Miami on Brickell Key Drive is close to the Design District. Dine at the hotel’s Water’s Edge at La Mar by Gaston Acurio.

Children’s Dream Fund “Dreaming Like It’s 1981” Pac-Man photo ops, boombox bars, break dancers and a DeLorean set a “totally rad” scene for “Dreaming Like It’s 1981,” the Children’s Dream Fund’s rockin’ throwback party Sept. 22 at Armature Works in Tampa, a nod to the year the St. Petersburg-based nonprofit began making dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses living throughout west-central Florida. Meeting some of the young dream recipients, hearing about the 4,000 dreams delivered (puppies, vacations, celebrity visits...) and dancing to ’80s hits played by The Spazmatics inspired the 400 guests to generously support the fund. — Amy Scherzer, photos courtesy of Joe Photo Tampa
