A MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF YEAR
FROM BAY EDITOR SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN
It’s hard to believe that another year is almost over. Fortunately, it’s one of the best times of year.
The air is crisp, or at least a little less muggy. We lack spectacular fall foliage but geraniums, with their glorious red color, are back in garden shops alongside poinsettias and amaryllis. And even the most humble lawns are springing to life with twinkling lights and lavish displays.
It’s also a time when Tampa Bay’s rich cultural and entertainment season is in full swing. See a play, go to a concert, check out a museum, attend a gala for a worthy cause. Try one of the bay area’s fabulous new restaurants. (Hopefully you can get a reservation!) As our cover model did in her sparkly roller skates, it’s time to let loose and have some fun.
Of course it’s also a season for shopping. We have great suggestions for the children on your list as well as that hardto-shop-for friend or relative. And while you’re at it, check out three spots we love in the greater Tampa Bay area that exude charm and holiday spirit.
We hope you have a wonderful holiday — see you in the New Year!

Christmas spirit
BY SUSAN TAYLOR MARTIN • PHOTOS BY LUIS SANTANA
When Cathy and Jim Martin lived in St. Petersburg’s Old Northeast, their 100-year-old home was renowned for its beautiful holiday decorations. With its numerous fireplaces and mantels, “the house just absorbed Christmas,” she says. “This was more of a challenge.”
“This” is the much newer house in the city’s Pink Streets area, where the Martins now live. Although it doesn’t have that century-old charm, the couple have managed to make it just as festive.
Garlands of gold leaves frame the front door as art glass ornaments sparkle on a lighted 8-foot tree. In one corner of the living room stands another tree hung with stuffed felt figures made by Cathy’s mother, a fiber artist, and grandmothers. On the kitchen counter sit a jar of candy canes, a plastic Santa from her childhood and a miniature tree from the ’40s with its original bubble lights. At Christmas, she and her sister Barbara used to keep it at the foot of their beds.
“The object is to make (the house) feel homey and comfortable and cozy,” says Cathy, assistant dean for career and professional development at Stetson University College of Law. “It makes me happy.”
While she was growing up in Pittsburgh, Christmas was such “an enormous event,” she recalls, that she wanted to stay home from school while her mother decorated. Working in department stores after college, she was captivated by the visual merchandising and the lavish holiday displays. She used her employee discount at a Horne’s store to buy a figure of a boxer in red shorts, the very first ornament she acquired as an adult. It’s now on a tree in the foyer.

Cathy and Jim Martin, pictured with Nora, have turned their St. Petersburg home into a winter wonderland. Christmas was “an enormous event” growing up, Cathy recalls. The decorations include vintage Christmas houses Cathy “rescued” from a Goodwill store and repaired, left.
Over the years, the collection grew with ornaments found at flea markets and garage sales — “anything that needed to be rescued.” Skating ornaments hearken back to her time as a competitive figure skater who taught the sport while in college. Red-and-white striped ornaments came from a now-defunct St. Petersburg furniture store. Her sisters, who don’t share her passion for collecting, gave her dozens of other ornaments that once decorated their childhood trees.
“Putting it out takes me back,” she says.
It was around Thanksgiving in 1996 that a friend suggested she meet Jim Martin, a lawyer who played a key role in bringing to St. Petersburg a collection of Salvador Dalí paintings that became The Dalí Museum. “On our second date,” she says, “I told him he had to go buy a Christmas tree.” They married that January, she moved into his house in the Old Northeast and in the next holiday season she started the decorating for which she became well known.
Jim has done his part. When the Saks Fifth Avenue store at International Plaza was going out of business, his wife craved an expensive white feather tree that had been used in a display. She waited for the price to drop by 90% but had to be out of town when the sale began. He attended and got the tree — just as another shopper was about to grab it.
That tree, along with all of the other decorations, survived the move to the new house in 2016. The couple decorated it during the pandemic “although for two years we were the only ones who saw it,” Cathy says. This year, they started right after Halloween.
The first thing she unpacks is a box of little felt dolls in Christmas garb. Every year “it’s like seeing them for the first time,” she says. Her sisters found them in a closet while helping their father get ready to sell his house. The dolls, in perfect condition, apparently had been intended as a gift but were hidden away and forgotten for years.
The Martins’ current house is in a flood zone, but they didn’t evacuate in Hurricanes Irma or Ian. After seeing what Ian did in Southwest Florida, they likely would leave if another major storm threatened. “Losing things like this would be devastating,” Cathy says of her collection, “but not like losing your life.”
She still remembers 2004’s Hurricane Charley because it loomed shortly after she went to a Goodwill store and found a bunch of little Christmas houses made in Japan in the 1950s. Some were missing their glitter and cellophane windows so — as Charley turned away from the Tampa Bay area — she set to work “rehabbing” the houses, as she puts it.
Now, surrounded by vintage bottle brush trees, they form a cozy, snowy little village.
All manner of ornaments and decorations deck the halls at the home.

PASSION. PURPOSE. PEOPLE.
With $1.5 billion in residential sales, Dania Perry, Tampa’s No. 1 REALTOR,® is driven by a mission to serve.
Dania Perry never intended to become a REALTOR®, much less Tampa’s top seller But when her beloved sister encouraged her to find a career that helped people, Perry heeded the advice.
“My sister was a physician, so her whole profession was about helping people. She was the first person to suggest I’d make a great real estate agent,” Perry recalled.
Perry, then an electrical engineer with four young children, pivoted to real estate in 2007. It was a tough market, but with determination, she thrived nonetheless. “Those early years during all the foreclosures were a time when buyers and sellers needed a very good agent who understood the market and could execute complex analytics,” she said.
As it turns out, Perry’s years in corporate America had equipped her well. She had been trained in the science of analytics and art of negotiation—skills she then brought to her clients at the negotiation table. “I believe people hire an agent for three reasons: exposure, representation and negotiation. When they hire me, they’re getting all three with a personal and professional touch,” Perry said.
Secrets to Success
In 2008, just a year after launching her new real estate career, Perry’s husband, Rick, a former MBA executive, saw her new venture’s potential and joined her in support of her business. With a strategic focus on luxury and waterfront markets, the business doubled in a year and doubled again in 2010
While other top agents rely on teams, Perry personally holds the hands of each client. “I
I want every client to feel like they’re my only one. It’s about doing what’s in their best interests, and sometimes that’s even advising them not to sell.
want every client to feel like they’re my only one, ” she said. “It’s about doing what’s in their best interests, and sometimes that’s even advising them not to sell.”
That said, her approach has matured as her practice has grown. One of her earliest and most powerful lessons came from a client who didn’t hire her When asked why she passed, the client reminded Perry that a sale is not just a sale; it’s someone’s home.
“It was the best listing I ever lost, because that advice changed my outlook for both buy ers and sellers. These are not simply assets, they are the places where memories are born and live in the heart. Even when clients tell me they are not attached to a home, the person who is buying it might be. I always seek to communicate and resolve issues in ways that feels good for everyone involved,” she said.
Perry’s sister passed away suddenly in 2016, but her legacy lives on through Perry’s dedication to the greater good. “Every day, I get to honor my sister’s life,” Perry said.
“She reminded me that my work on behalf of my clients is a privilege and great personal responsibility, one that can never be neglected or taken for granted.”
The advice remains evergreen as Perry continually shatters records as Century 21’s No 1 agent in the nation and in the world (as measured by total sales dollar volume).
“I’m not going to retire until I’m 90,” she said.
“I love what I do because I truly believe I’m helping people.”

FACES: LAURA HINE
MUSEUM JOURNEY
24 / bay
Laura Hine recently attended the 25th reunion of her graduating class at the U.S. Naval Academy. Of the 85 or so women in the class, about 60 turned out and “it’s just extraordinary how 25 years later everyone is doing such different things in the world,” she said. Indeed. After earning a degree in aerospace engineering and serving six years in the military, Hine returned to her native Tampa. She got a master’s degree in business administration and a general contractors license, then worked for the Beck Group on projects like the Southwest terminal at Tampa International Airport. As an independent consultant, she became project director for the development of Tom and Mary James’ new museum in downtown St. Petersburg. Tom James, chairman emeritus of Raymond James Financial, asked her to consider yet another career change, and since it opened in 2018, Hine has been the executive director of The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art. Hine is married to Hank Hine, executive director of The Dalí Museum, and is a member of the Pinellas County School Board. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. — Susan Taylor Martin
Did your military background help in the transition to such different career fields? I think the idea of leadership and working with people and working in an organization applies across industries. That’s what Tom said when he first asked me do it (heading the museum). He said, “You have good business sense, you have good common sense and you’re good with people.” When you’re in a leadership position, it’s about the people on the team and helping them thrive, it’s about setting the tone, having a vision, talking about the future.
It’s pretty unusual having two museum directors in one family. Has Hank given you advice? Are you married? (laughs) Of course we talk about it at the kitchen table, we share our day and all those kinds of things. Being with Hank all these years, I’ve been around the world to so many different museums so I’ve been hearing what he thinks and his ideas at The Dalí. But when I started this job as an actual museum director, we had to start saying we can’t talk about work all the time.
The pandemic hit not long after The James Museum opened. Did you worry it might not survive? It was certainly difficult. We chose not to hard close, we were very fortunate to have the support we do have with the Jameses but we did have to let go about a third of our staff and cut back in every area we possibly could until visitors did start coming back. 2020 was a long year, 2021 was better and this year we’re beating our pre-pandemic numbers (by about 30 percent). I think this year’s attendance was as strong as it was because we had a really big-name show (photographs by Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher), and in the museum industry people understand you can have sort of boom-bust
cycles. I’m cautioning a little because we don’t know what the next six months will bring.
How is the museum doing financially? The good news is that we’ve increased both our earned revenue and our contributed revenue from others. Private funding from the Jameses has consistently gone down, the five- to 10-year outlook is that we no longer use private funding from the Jameses but that as a business we have earned revenue from admission memberships, shop sales, rental events, any number of different categories. As a community asset we have donated revenues and also (money) coming in from an endowment. We have amazing supporters in addition to the Jameses.
Some in the art world regard museums like the James that are built on one person’s collection as “vanity” museums, which sometimes don’t get the same respect as other museums. Have you encountered that attitude? I have not personally. It’s been amazing. As I’ve visited other well-known, established western and wildlife art museums, people have been very, very receptive and we’ve participated in a couple of important conferences. When you look at the collection Tom and Mary created over the years it has a breadth and depth to it through which we can tell important stories. From the number of field trips we have, schools have realized that the museum has art, yes, but when it comes to American history and Native American history it is really wonderful. I guess I would say I’m biased because I love the Jameses dearly, and they really believe in the power of arts and culture to support people’s lives. I know their impetus for the museum. They didn’t do it for themselves, they did it for everybody.
Why did you decide to run for the School Board?
I grew up in Tampa and I was bused for integrated (public) schools. When our son, who is now 11, was born, I was introduced to this quagmire of school choice, what’s good, what’s not good, and I thought, what a mess. If this school is not good enough for my kid, it’s not good enough for anybody’s kid. I realized we all have to engage in public education, it’s an economic security issue, it’s a national security issue. (Having gone to public school), I was better prepared as an officer than any of my classmates who had gone to prep school because the people you serve with are a highly diverse group of people.
Your bio for the School Board says you graduated from the Army Airborne School in Fort Benning, Georgia. So you’ve actually jumped out of airplanes? I have 13 times, and my mother would always say, “Why do you want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?” Because it’s awesome. While I was a midshipman at the naval academy, I decided to compete for one of the few opportunities to go down to Fort Benning during one of the training sessions. It was five jumps required to get my wings and I’ve done two civilian jumps just for fun. That was all before I was 24. Now I have two kids, I’m not jumping out of airplanes anymore.
What if your kids want to follow in your footsteps? I’m going to say: “Why do you want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?”
Editor’s note: This interview was conducted before Hine announced in November that she is leaving The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art to spend more time on public education.

some of the macarons that Joshua Pramis makes are very elaborate, they all start with egg whites, sugar and cream of tartar. Some of his most popular macarons have toppings made with candied bits of cereal. Photos courtesy of Joshua Pramis

Joshua Pramis, a journalist with The Penny Hoarder, a personal finance website, started out by baking banana bread and gradually progressed to macarons.
THE MACAR N MAN
BY KATHY SAUNDERS
Joshua Pramis planned to celebrate his 40th birthday with his favorite indulgence: meltin-your-mouth salted caramel cafe mocha macarons. The chocolate shells are filled with mocha buttercream and salted caramel and drizzled with chocolate sauce and flakes of sea salt. They look like they came from the finest patisserie in Paris. But no, Pramis creates and cooks the French treats in his St. Petersburg kitchen.
The origin of the macaron is a bit fuzzy, but legend has it they were introduced to France by an Italian baker. No matter the roots, it’s the results that matter to Pramis.
This month, he’s busy developing holiday-inspired versions of the meringue sandwich cookies with flavors of peppermint and gingerbread for his family, friends and co-workers at The Penny Hoarder, a personal finance website based in St. Petersburg. Last Christmas, his ornament-shaped macarons and red-and-white swirled peppermint confections were a hit.
But he didn’t stop there, making macarons shaped like Easter eggs and bunnies. He created architectural toppings with, of all things, popular cereals. He’s really just starting his creative journey.
Pramis writes The Penny Hoarder’s email newsletter by day. On weekends and evenings, he tests recipes and tempers chocolates and sugars. A fan of the “The Great British Baking Show,” he began baking on a whim about four years ago, starting with banana bread and progressing to cookies and cupcakes. Macarons — not to be confused with chewy coconut macaroons — were the next challenge.
Pramis says macarons are a dessert that “requires a ton of patience.” His ornament-shaped creations were a hit last Christmas.
bay / 31
Two years ago, Pramis baked his first batch and they turned out perfectly. With great confidence, he offered to bring macarons to his family’s upcoming Thanksgiving gathering.
“I had a little bit of beginner’s luck,” he said. “The first batch wasn’t perfectly smooth but they actually looked decent and I was like, ‘What is everybody talking about, these aren’t that bad.’ ”
The day before Thanksgiving he started baking, only to toss out batch after batch of cracked or too-flat meringues, which made him reevaluate his baking prowess. “I almost called it quits — but that fourth, winning batch came out and I just had that feeling that I wanted to keep doing this,” he said.
He kept making macarons, whipping egg whites and slowly adding sugar and cream of tartar and tossing out as many duds as keepers. “It took a little while to get the hang of it and I was bouncing around between recipes,” he said.
Then a friend suggested he check out Brazilian blogger Camila Hurst’s website, Pies and Tacos, for baking tips. She uses the Swiss method of making macarons, mixing the sugar and egg whites together and heating the ingredients over a double boiler before adding a bit of syrup and whipping the mixture. Success!
Patience is the key ingredient, Pramis said. You have to get the meringue right before sifting in confectioners’ sugar and almond flour.
Macarons, pictured at left, are not to be confused with chewy coconut macaroons. Photo courtesy of Joshua Pramis
“It’s weird because I’m not a very patient person in general and this is a dessert that requires tons of patience,” he said. “In a way it has helped to reel me in overall, in all aspects of my life. If you want to get the winning macaron you have to keep going and going. And you don’t ever know until they come out of the oven.”
Pramis posted photos of his best batches on social media and started getting requests from friends. He has a devoted following at @themaczaddy on Instagram and a side business that keeps elevating his creativity. He started with plain cookies filled with chocolate or vanilla buttercream, what he refers to as “the basic macaron.”
He experimented with adding pumpkin spice and later added jams and fruit flavors. Recently he baked yellow, lemon buttercream-filled macarons and blue sandwich cookies filled with blueberry jam for a lemon-and-bluethemed bridal shower.
When a friend who loved Cap’n Crunch cereal was celebrating a birthday, he made a macaron filled with the same flavors and topped with candied bits of the cereal. Using milk soaked in the cereal is one trick he uses to infuse flavors. Friends also enjoy his Fruity Pebbles and Pop-Tarts versions.
“I started going from one cereal to the next and then I became obsessed with these ostentatious toppings, and who doesn’t like more sugar on their sugar cereal,” he said. “It’s an adult version of your childhood favorite.”
As a rule, macarons are gluten-free, and Pramis uses only brown sugar in his recipes. “Measurement-wise, it’s an equal swap,’’ he said, “but I find the brown sugar just adds this extra depth and rich flavor to the shells. They take a little longer to rest after piping because brown sugar retains moisture a bit more, but they’re so worth it.”
One challenge he has yet to perfect is a vegan version of his cookies. He can substitute the egg whites and create the same flavors, but texture is still a work in progress. Humidity in Florida doesn’t help. He has to make sure the humidity in his kitchen is under 50%.
While Pramis can legally sell his macarons through the state of Florida’s cottage industry regulations about home-based businesses, he works hard to balance his hobby and free time. His immediate goal is to publish a cookbook of his creations. And, if he moves to a home with a bigger kitchen, he might offer cooking classes.
“I worry about the joy being taken out of it,” he said. “This is the thing that is fun and has brought me joy in my free time. I don’t want it to become a commitment.”

HOLIDAY SHOPPING WHEE!
You’ve battled the Black Friday crowds. You’ve done the big-box stores. And oh, not the mall again! Still have holiday shopping to do but tired of the same old grind? Make a day of it at one of these open-air shopping plazas where you’ll not only find one-of-a- kind shops but also fine restaurants and cafes.

THE SHOPS AT WIREGRASS, WESLEY CHAPEL
On her days off, Kathy Van Eerden likes to walk the mile from her apartment to The Shops at Wiregrass. There she enjoys the holiday decorations, the weekend markets, the car shows and other events. And, of course, all the shops and restaurants. “This is probably Wesley Chapel’s primary location,” she said as she strolled the main street. “It’s kind of coming to be the downtown.”
Although it remains an unincorporated part of Pasco County, once rural Wesley Chapel is now one of the fastest growing areas in the entire Tampa Bay region. The Shops at Wiregrass, opened in 2008, has emerged as a town center for the thousands who have moved here in the past 10 years.
One bright Sunday morning I took the interstate from Tampa to Wesley Chapel, a drive of about 30 minutes. Most of the stores didn’t open until noon, so I had brunch outside at The Living Room, The Shops’ newest restaurant. (There is also one in Dunedin.) As I enjoyed a mimosa and French Toast Suzette, the tables were quickly filling with family groups and young couples. One couple was celebrating their engagement with a group of friends; all looked slightly hung over from a party the night before but happy to be together again in a pleasant setting.
Other full-service restaurants include Noble Crust, the Pasco outpost of the popular St. Petersburg restaurant; Cantino Laredo; Pinchers Crab Shack; and Grillsmith New American Grill. In all, there are about 30 places to get something to eat.
The Shops at Wiregrass is anchored by Macy’s, Dillard’s and JCPenney; they and most of the other stores line what could be the real Main Street if this were a real town. There are outdoor seats on which to relax, and a giant chess board outside Penney’s has huge movable pieces that practically beg for a game.
Although not as big or as upscale as Tampa’s International Plaza, The Shops at Wiregrass has higher-end stores including Pottery Barn and Talbots. You’ll find mall staples like Sunglass Hut and Claire’s, but also stores not otherwise seen in the Tampa Bay area like the Belgian chocolate shop Leonidas and

Lizard Thicket, a women’s clothing store. And I was thrilled to see a Barnes & Noble bookstore.
Also in this booming South Pasco area is Tampa Premium Outlets, a large outlet mall about 3 miles away in Lutz. And for a truly different shopping experience there’s the Grove at Wesley Chapel, whose new Krate container park has dozens of shops and eateries made out of repurposed shipping containers.

HYDE PARK VILLAGE, TAMPA
First things first: Hyde Park Village is no shopping mall. And you couldn’t rightly call the sprawling outdoor stretch of stores and restaurants across six city blocks a shopping center, either.
Tucked into one of Tampa’s most charming neighborhoods of historic bungalows and graceful oaks, Hyde Park Village seems to have hit its sweet spot as what developers call a lifestyle center. Visitors stroll wide sidewalks and green space around the signature outdoor fountain in the Village Circle, where there’s outdoor seating for sipping coffee or eating a Hyppo popsicle (or a salty caramel cupcake from the Sprinkles 24-hour cupcake ATM).
Shoppers browse boutique-y stores — Kittenish, Bonobos, Kendra Scott, Rag & Bone, to name a few — and mainstays including Lululemon, Vineyard Vines, Anthropologie, Sephora, Nike and Paper Source.
Shopping isn’t the only draw: Hyde Park Village, part of the neighborhood
for nearly four decades, has had farmers markets, a fall pumpkin patch and a towering tree at Christmas. It’s a social hub for dining and drinking at more than a dozen spots with indoor and outdoor seating, including lively Bartaco, swanky On Swann and, for old-school burgers and shakes, Goody Goody. There’s Wine Exchange and Meat Market, too.
For fun, visitors can pour their own candles at The Candle Pour, learn to make Chicken Piperade at a Sur la Table class, create their own dessert treats at Cake Drip or do dinner and a movie at Cinebistro.
And dogs are definitely part of the Hyde Park vibe — perusing collars and treats at Downtown Dogs, enjoying the sun at outdoor tables and partaking from water bowls the shopkeepers set out to welcome them.

ST. ARMANDS CIRCLE, SARASOTA
Like most places on Florida’s west coast, Sarasota has grown and changed dramatically. Luckily for shoppers and diners, St. Armands Circle has retained its charm and sense of history.
Follow the John Ringling Causeway over beautiful Sarasota Bay and you’ll come to this island of sidewalk cafes, one-of-a-kind shops and a beloved fashion emporium whose customers have included Cher and Jennifer Aniston. Just an hour south of Tampa Bay, St. Armands is a perfect change of scenery while you do your holiday shopping.
Ringling, the circus magnate who made Sarasota his home, bought the island
in 1917 and planned a luxurious development of homes and shops laid out in a circle. Then he built the causeway and in 1926 became the first person to drive across it. Thousands have followed since, drawn by the tropical setting and retail bounty.
The Circle, as the main shopping area is commonly known, lost more than 20 stores during the worst of the pandemic, but almost every space is now filled with restaurants, salons, galleries, jewelers and shops selling everything from Turkish delight to pet toys to garden decor. The area is popular year-round, though it can get so busy during the winter that it’s a good idea to have lunch early or late and shop while everyone else is dining.

All of the restaurants have indoor seating, but on a sunny day grab a table outside and enjoy the people watching — dog walkers, well-heeled retirees, 20-somethings who look straight out of the reality show “Siesta Key.” Two favorite spots are Crab & Fin, which has excellent seafood, and Columbia (yes, part of the Tampa chain), where you can fuel up for shopping with a glass of sangria, a Cuban sandwich and a 1905 Salad. More than 15 other restaurants and cafes offer a range of cuisines, including Italian, Greek and Caribbean, while several ice cream, candy and pastry shops are handy for that afternoon pick-me-up.
The Circle’s physical setting gives it a comforting sense of permanence in a fast-changing world and so does the presence of longtime establishments. Cafe L’Europe, a fine-dining restaurant, has been around since 1973, and Foxy Lady, a high-end boutique, has been in its own elegant building since the 1980s. (The first Foxy Lady opened on Siesta Key 50 years ago.) The store
St. Armands Circle has many statues from John Ringling’s personal collection. You’ll also find the Circus Ring of Fame, with more than 150 bronze plaques, in the pretty little park in the roundabout. Photo by Susan Taylor Martin
carries a full line by Canadian designer Joseph Ribkoff, and in a city with an active social season, Foxy Lady is the place to go for dazzling evening wear.
A bit of trivia: When actor George Clooney married lawyer Amal Alamuddin in 2014, the bride’s sister bought her dress for the reception at Foxy Lady’s St. Armands store, the Siesta Sand newspaper reported.
For casual clothing well suited to Florida’s hot, steamy climate, try the Cotton Club, Shore and Sahara, among others. The Circle also has chain stores including Chico’s, Tommy Bahama, Lily Pulitzer and Soma.
If you tire of shopping and eating, check out the Circus Ring of Fame in the pretty little park in the roundabout. More than 150 bronze plaques encircle the park with the names and bios of performers and others connected to the circus world. Among them: Cecil B. DeMille, who directed “The Greatest Show on Earth,” and the Therons, described as a “high energy” French bicycle troupe. Also set among the palms are statues from Ringling’s personal collection.
One of Florida’s most appealing cities, Sarasota is well worth a visit for more than a shopping excursion. Within 15 minutes of St. Armands are the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, The Ringling Circus Museum, the Asolo Repertory Theater and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Other attractions nearby include the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and the Sarasota Jungle Gardens.
And you can certainly stay in style — just a short drive away are a Ritz-Carlton, a Westin and a Hyatt Regency.

very holiday season, the same question looms: What to get someone fastidious about her appearance but difficult to shop for? Lingerie is too intimate, grooming aids too practical, perfume too predictable. Here’s a suggestion from the Don CeSar resort on St. Pete Beach: a membership to its luxurious gulf-front spa.
The legendary “pink palace,” opened in 1928 and host to countless luminaries through the years, recently underwent a major interior renovation. (The outside remains the same distinctive pink.) The three-story Spa Oceana, in its own space near the pool, now offers a wide range of discounted beauty and spa treatments for a $99 monthly membership fee.
At the Don’s invitation, a friend and I recently visited the spa to check it out and get pedicures. I usually have my toes done at a big, overly bright shopping center salon that has about the same ambiance as that of a nearby Publix. At the Oceana, clients are greeted with soft lighting and music in a chandeliered lobby. A window looks out over the beach and palm trees.
I opted for the hour-long Bali Breeze pedicure. Settling into an adjustable massage chair, I set the controls to gently knead my back. The pedicurist draped a warm wrap around my neck and eased my feet into what looked like a large crystal bowl filled with warm water and scented salts.
It was a bit early for Champagne ($12 a glass) so I sipped coconut water and nibbled from a little cup of nuts and dried fruits — the flavored water, fruit and nuts were complimentary — as the pedicurist clipped, filed and scrubbed. Then she smoothed a rich cream called marshmallow melt over my legs and covered my feet with a mask of shea, mango seed and cocoa butters.
The final step was applying coats of a sparkly deep pink polish. My toes looked like little gems. It was the best — and most relaxing — pedicure I’ve ever had.
For the monthly fee, members receive a 25 percent discount on hair services, a 15 percent discount on retail items and spa services (the pedicure was a discounted $72 including tip) as well as complimentary valet parking with a scheduled spa treatment. And this is especially attractive: Members get one 60-minute Swedish massage or organic facial a month, and those can be rolled over to the next month if not used.
The Oceana also has steam rooms, aroma-infused whirlpools and lockers for member use.
While waiting for my friend’s appointment, we walked over to the main part of the Don and had lunch in the Society Table restaurant — peach Bellinis and Caesar salads with grilled shrimp. We browsed the gift shops and boutiques, noting that the ice cream counters that were on the front side of the Don before the renovation are now in the back at Uncle Andy’s Market, a full-
service sundries shop new to the hotel.
By early afternoon, morning clouds had cleared and the sun was coming out. I took the elevator up to the third level of the spa and went out on its expansive rooftop terrace. From there, the view over the gulf and up the beach was stunning.
That view alone almost seemed worth $99 a month.

“I hurt my back playing golf. Iwent to the chiropractor. Iwent to the pain institute. Iwent to the spine institute. Nothing helped. Thepain was debilitating; Iwent six or seven months without playing.”
~JohnR.ofSouth Pasadena
Chronic pain makes everyday life incredibly difficult. It prevents you from participating in activities you once loved and simple daily tasks likegrocery shopping become nearly impossible.
This was the case with John R. of South Pasadena.
John would go on to explain thatonascale of one to 10, his pain was well over anine every single day.Regardless of your age, back pain, whether caused by asports injury, longstanding arthritis or even specific conditions likescoliosis, can severely impact the quality of your life. In short, it stops you from doing the things you love with the people you love and that’snot agreat way to live.
On top of that, general practitioners, specialists and surgeons areall too eager to prescribe medications with side effects thatare often detrimental to your recovery, orrecommend invasive surgeries that often have less than desirable outcomes.
Fortunately for the people of St.Petersburg, Dr.Rebecca Gibbons and her team at Achieve Acupuncture&Integrative Medicine have pioneered non-pharmaceutical, non-surgical innovative medical solutions thatactually treatyour pain!
One of the modern medical solutions Dr.Gibbons offers is O3 Regenerative Therapy™ which uses prolozone, atechnique that involves injecting asolution of natural anti-inflammatory medications, vitamins and ozone into degenerated or injured joints, and into areasofpain. It ’s with these injections thatJohn found himself back on the green.
