LOOKING AHEAD (BUT NOT LOOKING DOWN)

Katherine Snow Smith in the cockpit of the ICON A5. Photography by Will Vragovic

18 bay

DECEMBER 2016

As another year winds down, my reaction is as predicable as the classic Auld Lang Syne that will play at midnight in a few weeks. I always feel a little sad when I think “this year went even faster than the last one.” Auld Lang Syne began as a poem in 1788 by Scottish poet Robert Burns. The title translates to “old long since” or “days gone by.” Perhaps it’s looking back at the highs and lows and how quickly one month replaced the previous one that makes some of us a little melancholy. So look in the other direction. Looking ahead brings more hope and excitement. And there’s more to look forward to than New Year’s resolutions of losing weight or quitting smoking. Let 2017 be the year you do something you have always wanted to try. Maybe it’s a pottery class, signing up to mentor a struggling student, or making time to see all the

main stage (or side stage) productions at one of Tampa Bay’s great performing arts venues. This issue should help get your wheels turning. The story of a couple who are leaving St. Petersburg behind to sail to Grenada and live in the Caribbean may inspire you to take up a temporary residence in some exotic port. When you see the beautiful photographs of their boat in Tampa Bay, you may decide to simply learn to sail at home. (Or take up photography.) We all love to travel. But two stories in this issue will encourage you to take travel beyond the norm. Eighty-sixyear-old Mickey Rolland of Tampa has been to 40-plus countries and recently requested the State Department add extra pages to her passport to allow for more travel. If you don’t have her stamina or the super-sized passport, maybe just one very distinctive trip will be the change you make in 2017. You can find such an excursion through Exeter Travel in Tampa. It offers truffle hunting in Croatia, strudel-making classes in Budapest, a marionette workshop in Prague and numerous other hands-on and

behind-the-scenes experiences around the world. If 2017 is going to be the year you learn to fly, go no farther than Peter O. Knight airport on Davis Islands. California-based ICON has just opened its only flight school on the country’s East Coast there. The company dubs its ICON A5 as the Apple computer of airplanes. It’s beautifully designed and easy to operate. In 27 hours, you can have a light aircraft pilot’s license. I had my picture taken in the ICON for this month’s column as a nod to trying something new. Full disclosure: I didn’t go up in the plane even though I had the chance. Small planes just aren’t my thing. But I am going to try something that might be just as scary and unsettling to some. I’m auditing a writing class, either essay or poetry, at Eckerd College. What are you going to do to light up 2017? — Katherine Snow Smith Have comments, questions? Let us know. ine years ago a group of moms with young children started planning to go on the Old Northeast Candlelight Tour of Homes in St. Petersburg. They looked at the wagons they used for pulling kids to the park, playground or preschool that were usually stocked with goldfish crackers, juice boxes, board books and an extra diaper or two.

“We realized we don’t need our kids to use the wagons,” Colleen Weidenfeller said, laughing. So about six women loaded a wagon or two with wine, cheese, crackers and holiday cookies and sipped, dined and mostly talked as they strolled from house to house on the home tour. Now the group of as many as 30 women pulling their red wagons have become almost as much of a staple of the home tour as the beautifully decorated houses themselves. Some host homes have even put up a sign for “wagon parking” over the years.

“It’s the one thing every year that I make sure I carve out time for,” said Michelle Burtch, co-owner of Canvas Fashion Gallery and one of the moms in the group. With busy lives around children, spouses and work plus the long holiday to-do list, something completely fun just for Mom usually is the first thing to go. But these five hours on a Sunday afternoon have become as much of their Christmas tradition as stockings and the tree. “You have real time together, with nobody pulling at you. It’s a chance for us to really catch up and have real conversations,” Burtch said.

Michelle Burtch reaches for a snack before the ladies leave for the Old Northeast Candlelight Tour of Homes.

The kids are older now, and the group no longer gathers at the park. Instead, they juggle work and volunteering with shuttling kids to school, sports, drama, other activities, homework . . . and don’t forget the dog is way overdue for his shots. Thus, they always walk to the 10 or so homes on the tour instead of taking the free trolley. It allows more time for visiting and partaking in the traveling feast of appetizers and wine. “We go in the homes in shifts so one group stays with the wagons, and we stand on the sidewalk talking more while the others are inside,” said Weidenfeller. This isn’t just to maximize visiting time; it became necessary to protect the wagons’ contents. “People have thought we’re with the tour, like the welcome wagon, and come up and start serving themselves,” she said, laughing. She added that the group has grown because friends bring friends. “It’s not a strict invite-only thing. We always ask people to bring their own drink and something to eat to share,” Weidenfeller said. One appetizer that’s always on the menu is Heluva Good dip from Publix. “It’s one of those heavy dips you’re not supposed to eat.”

(But the 3 or 4 miles the women walk, rain or shine, makes up for the caloric splurge.) Though the fellowship is the most important part of the tradition, going inside the homes, of course, is a draw as well. “Who doesn’t want to sneak a peek inside these homes we drive by every day?” Weidenfeller said. One year, Burtch was enamored with a home that used shells in a wreath and on the mantel intertwined with greenery and other holiday decor. The next year she found a wreath of all-white shells and it has become a favorite holiday decoration. “I love to look for ideas to decorate at Christmas or just any time because I’m not that creative,” said Amy Rettig, vice president of public affairs for the Nielsen Co. “One year I saw a home had used vintage Christmas balls in their decorations. After that I got vintage Christmas balls at the Euclid-St. Paul’s (neighborhood) yard sale and started hanging them from my dining room chandelier for the holidays. I always get compliments and I probably would not have even looked twice at those vintage balls had I not seen them on the tour.”

Ida Raye Chernin treasures the family fun and tasty traditions associated with Hanukkah, especially lighting the numerous menorahs in her eclectic collection.

da Raye Chernin never intended to collect menorahs. They just accumulated through 50 years of marriage, three kids and seven grandchildren. Some where whimsical purchases that make her smile. Quite a few were gifts and travel souvenirs. Each nine-branched candelabra lights up a memory for Chernin. “This was mine when I was a little girl,” she says. “That one is a wedding gift from an aunt.” A modern glass design caught her eye while shopping in New York. A pair of goofy golfers reminds her of her daughter and son-in-law. The high-heeled shoe menorah came from her sisters who know her so well. Putting candles in the Rubik’s Cube challenges her every year. The Hanukkah miracle dates to 165 B.C.,when a tiny amount of holy oil lasted for eight days, long enough for the Jewish Maccabees to keep the menorah burning while they restored and rededicated the Temple that had been seized by Syrian Greeks. Hanukkah is the Hebrew word for “dedication.” A new candle is lit every night, for “Eight Crazy Nights,” as Adam Sandler sings it. The ninth candle, called the shamash or helper, is used to light the others. One vial of oil burning eight days was considered a minor miracle, as those things go, but seasonal timing promoted it to the big leagues. The annual commemoration starts

on the 25th day of the month of Kislev, according to the Hebrew calendar, which tends to coincide with Christmas. “I overdo all the holidays,” said Chernin, opening the door to a storage room bulging with entertaining accessories. Floor-to-ceiling shelves, categorically neat, hold dishes, linens, napkins, wrapping paper, you-name-it. Her shoe closet, by the way, is equally organized and well stocked. Chernin and her late husband, Marshall, designed their New Tampa home in 2002 with several of their collections in mind. The couple’s frequent travels to Seattle, Asia and Israel are remembered in displays of glass, artwork and Judaica. Both have filled leadership roles in local Jewish organizations, including the Tampa Jewish Federation, Florida Holocaust Museum, the Jewish National Fund, Israel Bonds, Hillel Academy of Tampa and Rodeph Sholom synagogue.

Chernin’s menorah collection is large enough for every guest to light their own at annual Hanukkah gatherings. Some were whimsical purchases that make her smile, one was her first childhood menorah, another a 1962 wedding gift, and several are souvenirs of travels to Israel.

“Everyone who comes to my house lights a menorah,” she said. “We play dreidel games and sing songs. Everyone picks a number and sits in the special Hanukkah chair and opens gifts in numerical order. “It’s tradition and it’s fun.” Her brisket and braided challah are family-famous. Potato pancakes, called latkes, also are a Hanukkah dinner must.

48 bay

DECEMBER 2016

“One year I made them with mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes,” she chuckled, “and no one knew the difference.” Hanukkah, with its many cultural rituals, has always kindled year-end reflections for Chernin, even more so since her husband’s passing on the third night in 2012. “We all miss him very much and we feel his presence as we light the menorahs,” she said.

ore than a century ago Orville Wright declared flying to be a sport as much as it is a way to get from point A to point B. “The exhilaration of flying is too keen, the pleasure too great, for it to be neglected as a sport,” he said. Since then flying, even in small private planes, has become less romantic and more encumbered with regulations. Planes have become utilitarian. A new kind of plane, however, that falls in the Federal Aviation Administration’s Light Sport Aircraft category will change all this. At least that’s what its promoters recently told a crowd at Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Islands in Tampa. The ICON A5 is like riding a Harley-Davidson or driving

a Porshe compared to taking the subway, exalted the company’s founder and CEO Kirk Hawkins. “It’s like a jet ski with wings,” said ICON Aircraft spokesman Brian Manning. “It’s like what Apple did for computers, turning something pretty complex and making it actually easy to use,” explained Derek Tam-Scott, ICON’s marketing director. “We realized there are a lot of people in the world who said, ‘Man, I would love to learn to fly if you made it easy, you made it safe, you made it fun, you made it cool — sign me up,’ ” said former fighter pilot Hawkins, explaining how the A5 is “democratizing” private flying. Tampa Bay residents will be among the first in the world to fly the two-seater plane or learn how to fold down the wings so it can be can be pulled by a car or stored in a garage. ICON just opened its East Coast flight school at Peter O.

An owner could potentially keep the plane in the garage, pull it behind a car to a nearby boat ramp and be in the air, 15 minutes after deciding it’s a nice day to fly.

Knight Airport. The company’s only other training center is at its headquarters in Vacaville, Calif. The ICON A5’s 46-inch wide cockpit looks more like the driver’s seat of a car than an airplane. It’s also about as easy to drive as a car, according to Tam-Scott. Pilots say it offers more ease of motion, more freedom. The FAA requires 20 hours of training to be licensed for light sport aircraft. ICON requires an additional seven hours for its planes, but this is still considerably less than the minimum of 40 hours required for a general aviation license. A novice pilot will pay $12,000 to $13,000 for the time and instruction required for the ICON A5. More than 1,800 orders have been placed for the 23foot-long plane, which ranges from $207,000 to $257,000. You could go test fly one today and put a deposit down. Just don’t start planning to fly down to Naples for lunch

yet. Manufacturing is ramping up slowly, so orders placed now won’t be filled until 2020. But there will be at least five planes on hand to rent by the hour or day at Peter O. Knight in 2017, though rates have yet to be set. One of the A5’s key perks is versatility. It can land or take off on the water or a small swath of ground. So an owner could potentially keep the plane in the garage, pull it behind a car to a nearby boat ramp and be in the air, 15 minutes after deciding it’s a nice day to fly. “This aircraft has the range to take you from this boat basin to Havana, Cuba,” said Joe Lopano, CEO of Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, motioning to the glistening waters surrounding Davis Islands. Such a trip, of course, would have the basic purpose of getting from point A to point B. But sometimes getting there is half the fun.

At left, an ICON A5 photographed over Tampa Bay during ICON Aircraft’s grand opening of the first East Coast Flight Training Center for the ICON A5 at Peter O. Knight Airport in Tampa. Above, the plane folds and fits on a trailer that can be pulled with a car.

COME SAIL AWAY BY PEGIE STARK PHOTOGRAPHS BY JIM DAMASKE

David Dabney’s sailboat, Crystal Blue Persuasion, sets sail from Harborage Marina, St. Petersburg. Below, Dabney on his boat.

David Dabney and Sydney Noffke are about to do something that’s on many a bucket list. They are sailing away to a foreign land where they will live on a boat. Dabney has already been living on his 40-foot Caliber sailboat that sleeps six at the Harborage Marina in St. Petersburg for two and a half years. Now he and Noffke, his girlfriend, plan to live on the sloop in the Caribbean island nation of Grenada. The sailboat is called Crystal Blue Persuasion. It’s named after Dabney’s father’s favorite song. He was a first-grader when his father taught him how to sail in Sarasota. Soon after, Dabney was in the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. At age 30, he has sailed all around the coasts and inlets of Florida many times but is ready for a change. The couple chose Grenada because it’s not very touristy

and is environmentally conscious, Dabney explained. Once they arrive, Noffke, a jewelry designer, will continue to create her gold and silver pieces on board. Dabney plans to work at a marina or selling yachts. Or perhaps he will tend bar or open a convenience store. Life on Crystal Blue Persuasion is very self-sustainable. After buying the boat in Maryland and sailing it to North Carolina, Dabney “dressed up” the sloop, adding the latest electronics and solar panels so that it can run completely on solar power. After that, he embarked on the six-day trip to Florida . “I love the idea of not relying on anything or anybody but myself and my boat,” he said. “I can generate all of my own clean power and use it in a way that is not harming the environment. Just to sail and live on a boat gives you a liberated sense of being your own navigator.”

Just to sail and live on a boat gives you a liberating sense of being your own navigator. I feel like an explorer from the old days. I have always longed for adventure.” DAVID DABNEY Simplicity is another draw. Dabney sold all his furniture and possessions when he decided to live on the boat. He said he does not collect “things” that he doesn’t need anymore. St. Petersburg was chosen as his home dock because Dabney had enjoyed visiting as a child and knew the city, especially downtown, was steadily becoming a vibrant, urban center. He’s not alone. Sixty of the Harborage’s 300 slips are occupied by boat owners who live on board full time. What’s the hardest part of living on a sailboat? Maintenance, Dabney said. But he has learned how to maintain his boat and fix a number of things from motor breakdowns to leaks through simple hands-on experience and a lot of manuals. There are no classes

to prepare one for what might happen while you’re several miles from shore, he added. He doesn’t worry about storms, though. “I am confident in the construction of my vessel,” Dabney said. “As long as I can keep my wits about me, I think the boat can survive the roughest storms. I know the boat is going to outlast me.” Ironically, though he bought the sloop in Maryland, it was built in Largo, a big boat building hub in the ’80s and ’90s. The couple just returned from Les Sables d’Olonne, France, starting point for the Vendee Globe. They were part of the send-off for the race, which takes place every four years. Dabney equates the participants with Formula 1 race car drivers. The Vendee Globe’s record for circumnavigating the world was set in 2012 when a participant made the journey in just 78 days. Dabney and Noffke aren’t sure how long they will live in Grenada. Crossing the Atlantic on the sailboat is another dream on the horizon. The lure of the oceans and the need for freedom will probably beckon Dabney to always live on a boat. “You are your own sovereign. You are surrounded by nature. It’s like living in a spaceship,” he said. “I feel like an explorer from the old days. I have always longed for adventure.” Follow Dabney’s and Noffke’s adventures at his blog: sailblogs.com/member/persuasion

Having the golden touch ultimately didn’t bode well for King Midas, but it can work out beautifully for your next big night out. Metallics, be they gold, silver or bronze, have steadily lit up the runways for the past year. They act as neutrals yet definitely spark interest. Some of the metallic fashions featured in our spread were photographed with sparks flying in the background at the Institute for Creative Arts in Dunedin. This is where welders are trained for high demand jobs. The institute also offers studios and gallery space for local metal artists as well as classes for the general public in old-world blacksmithing and metal sculpting. The institute provides the perfect juxtaposition between gritty metal work and the elegant, luxurious metallic wardrobes and accessories. If you aren’t ready to use your Midas touch to go all metallic, start with shoes or a bag such as this one by Yves Saint Laurent. It’s simple, yet stunning. Dip your feet into the metallic waters a little further with this gathered skirt by Vince Camuto. Or, add just a touch with the silver bow necklace that’s the typical fun and flirty look we love by Betsey Johnson.

d ball gown.

Boat neck metallic gown ($308 ),Vince Camuto. Mesh bow necklace ($52), Betsey Johnson. Both from Dilliard’s, International Plaza, Tampa.

POLISHED There is no better go-to than the straight black dress with a little bit of bling. This Roberto Cavalli with metallic angel wings around the keyhole neckline fits the bill perfectly.

“Cadi” long bishop sleeve gown with embellished sequined angel wing detail at bateau keyhole neckline, Roberto Cavalli ($2,525). Banni platform sandals, back bow with hotfix details, Jessica Simpson ($98). Both from Dillard’s, International Plaza, Tampa.

GLOWING Now you are in full metallic force. Midas has used his gift to turn your typical black or cream dress into silver and gold. The design of the Herve Leger dress is streamlined and simple and comes down as far as the knee. But the gun-metal hue brings it to a new level. This Calvin Klein classic is timeless. It could be the prettiest dress at the party in any of the past six decades as well as today. But, once again, the metallic fabric takes it far beyond an elegant tailored ball gown.

LUSTROUS The spaghetti strap dress is a longloved staple for all occasions. There’s the one for the pool, one for drinks after work, one for a summer wedding . . . and then there’s one like this. But there aren’t many like this. The silver and gold metallic geometric pattern of this BCBG beauty channels 1930s art deco yet it is thoroughly modern. If ever a pair of shoes deserved to reside on a golden pedestal it is this pair of embroidered silk Manolo Blahniks.

Journeys of a lifetime BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANDRES LEIVA

Having traveled to more than 40 countries, Mickey Rolland has a ready answer when asked if she has a favorite, or even five favorites. “Nothing is my favorite. Every time I go somewhere it becomes my favorite,” said the 86-year-old, who lives in Tampa. She started traveling in the late 1970s and throughout the ’80s when working in New York in the garment industry. Rolland collected artwork used in designing fabrics and called on manufacturers around the world. She continued to travel with her husband, Alan, when they retired. After he died in 2004, she traveled with friends, but more often alone on tour groups. But on such groups one is not alone for long, Rolland said. In fact, she has made friends on some journeys who join her on subsequent trips. The Bayshore Boulevard condominium where she lives is filled, but far from crowded, with reminders of her travels. Rolland mostly brings back small keepsakes that com-

pliment her streamlined, minimalist decor but don’t overpower it. There’s a tiny box made from an African shell, a small carved cat from Egypt, a Korean compass, a Chinese wedding basket. Rolland brings back mostly experiences — such as lifting off in a hot air balloon in Egypt, riding an elephant in Thailand or zip lining in Ecuador. “The sight of Mount Everest and the range of the Himalayas from a small plane was unforgettable,” she remembered. Another travel highlight was spending two days at a jungle resort in a tent at the Chitwan National Park, which was reachable only by raft. “One of the many things I liked about Mongolia was I had never ridden a two-hump camel, and I rode one there,” she recalled of her 2015 trip. Having ridden one-hump several times, including in Morocco, they had become routine. When Rolland isn’t traveling she spreads her infectious love of travel by volunteering at the information desk at Tampa International Airport and working at Tumi Luggage at International Plaza. This wooden compass is from Korea. Rolland originally bought it to give away back home, but she said she fell in love with the piece and decided to keep it.

One of the many things I liked about Mongolia was I had never ridden a two-hump camel and I rode one there.” MICKEY ROLLAND

“People say, ‘Oh, that costs too much as the airlines throw luggage around.’ Yes, luggage does get destroyed by the throwing of the suitcase, but my bag can stand this throwing,” she attested. Rolland’s latest Tumi bag has served as a faithful companion on her past eight trips, including flying on 11 different airlines for an Australian journey. She has plenty of advice for travelers beyond which suitcase she prefers.

THE SIMPLE TO THE STRATEGIC Never take anything that cannot be replaced if it’s lost or stolen. If you are checking a bag, take a picture of what you are packing just in case your bag is lost. That way you can remember what you packed and have proof to show the airlines and the insurance company. You can tip anywhere with U.S. $1 bills. This is handy for hotels. If you are going to be in an area where there are mosquitoes, take garlic capsules or vitamin B. These cause the body to produce an odor that is not detected by humans but is disliked by mosquitoes. If you take a piece of jewelry with a thin chain, thread the chain through two plastic straws and then clasp it. (This prevents tangles and breaks.) In Italy, Greece and Spain, use olive oil as moisturizer. On long flights wear support hose. This will prevent swelling of your legs. The staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is usually very knowledgeable and will help you figure out what immunizations you need for the area you are visiting. Certain immunizations are not optional. Some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination before they will let you cross the border.

Rolland keeps photos of her adventures across the globe framed on a wall in her home. She also likes to collect little animal statues from different countries: the ox and the cat, for example, are from Egypt; the llama from Chile.

The last tip clearly solidifies Rolland as quite the seasoned traveler. And not one who is going to be denied passage across any borders.

EXOTIC BESPOKE TRAVEL

F

rom Ankara to the Azores, from Mount Everest base camp to the Dead Sea, from the jungles of Cambodia to the lush Serengeti, Greg Tepper’s adventures would fill a shelf full of National Geographic magazines. “We simply cannot know or understand who we are unless we travel,” said the founder and president of Exeter International, a luxury tour operator specializing in custom itineraries to Russia and Central and Eastern Europe for individuals and small groups. “What is our place in the world and what does it mean to be ‘American’? We have to step out of our country and look back at our home with an outsider’s perspective to see exactly who we are,” said Tepper, who owns the 24-year-old business. Tepper’s constant travel — “I’ve been everywhere in Europe, most of Asia and the Middle East, more than 10 times on safari in Africa and three trips to Australia” — ultimately benefits clients who also seek novel experiences. Exeter has arranged meetings with a retired KGB colonel, tea with a Terezin Holocaust survivor, and private tours of the largest art collection in the world with a Hermitage curator who is a friend of Tepper’s. Clients have slipped backstage to meet a Bolshoi ballerina, visited tsarist vineyards in Georgia and danced at Catherine Palace south of St. Petersburg on New Year’s Eve.

“Experiential travel is so important because it creates context for us as we enter new cultures,” Tepper said. “If you love to cook, why not meet a Pelmeni chef who will teach you how to make Russian dumplings? If you enjoy chess, take a lesson from a Moscow chessmaster and create a memory that will forever be in your head.” Tour packages start at $1,000 a day and offer conciergelevel guides, five-star accommodations, private transportation or preprogrammed GPS devices. Comfortable travel far from one’s comfort zone. “We’re very big in a small niche,” Tepper said, naming J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs among the corporate accounts hiring Exeter to manage international board meetings. “Ironically,” said Tepper, 51, a Davis Islands resident, “less than 1 percent of our business comes from the Tampa Bay area.” Most bookings come through high-end travel agents, about 35 percent from metropolitan New York and 20 percent from Brazil and Mexico. Begun as Russiatours in 1992 out of his parents’ Tampa house, Tepper parlayed invaluable connections he made the prior year working in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, employed by one of the first independent tour operators in the emerging, post-Communism travel market. Food was so scarce in Russia that he lost 30 pounds that year, but the contacts he gained “go all the way into the Kremlin,” he said. President Boris Yeltsin’s tanks lined the streets when he took his first group of tourists behind the Iron Curtain. As travel restrictions loosened, Tepper renamed the company Exeter for the New England boarding school, Phillips Exeter Academy, where he began his Russian studies and became fluent in the language. “We specialize in a region, not one country,” he said. Travel to Central Asia and the former Soviet republic including Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, draws new interest, even as recent political events, such as the annexation of Crimea, eliminate some favorite destinations.

POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE Clockwise from left, Exeter International founder and president Greg Tepper in Mustang, Nepal, where he met the crown prince for tea; trying his hand at golden eagle hunting in Kyrgyzstan; at Mount Everest. Photos courtesy of Greg Tepper

Driving to Exeter headquarters, a modern, LEED goldcertified building, just west of downtown Tampa, Tepper glimpses the city’s historical landmark, the 123-year-old University of Tampa silver minarets. In his mind’s eye, he sees another landmark, near his office in Moscow, built for Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, St. Basil’s Cathedral’s onion-shaped cupolas. “I’m passionate about history,” he said, “and travel makes history come alive.”

If you love to cook, why not meet a Pelmeni chef who will teach you how to make Russian dumplings? If you enjoy chess, take a lesson from a Moscow chessmaster and create a memory that will forever be in your head.” GREG TEPPER, Exeter International

MORTON PLANT HOSPITAL TURNS 100

A CENTURY OF SUPPORT

BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH

J

ust over 100 years ago, the small community of Clearwater, population 2,000, raised $20,000 to build Morton Plant Hospital. As the hospital celebrates its 100th birthday the community is much bigger, but the shared sense responsibility for supporting the hometown hospital remains strong. It all started in 1912 when railroad tycoon Morton Freeman Plant was vacationing with his family at what was then the Belleview Hotel. When his young son Henry Plant II was badly injured in a car accident, the elder Plant didn’t want him to have to recover at the hospital in Tampa, a day’s journey away. So he rushed railroad cars filled with doctors, nurses and equipment to Clearwater from Chicago.

The incident prompted a group of civic-minded women, encouraged by Dr. John Bowen, to find a way to build a hospital in Clearwater. They began fundraising, and Plant pledged a $100,000 endowment if they could raise $20,000 to build the hospital. Within a few weeks, the 2,000 residents, mostly citrus farmers and tradesman, came up with the money and construction began. The 20-bed hospital opened in 1916 in the heart of town next to the water. location with 687 beds. A new $200 million, four-story patient and surgical tower on the eastern side of the hospital is expected to be completed in April. Morton Plant is part of the BayCare network of nonprofit hospitals. The $200 million expansion is mostly being funded by the hospital’s own revenues. But a significant chunk of the money comes from fundraising. Bay magazine is highlighting three of the hospital’s many longtime donors. They see Morton Plant as a special cause and medical facility like no other.

THREE-GENERATION ‘MIRACLE BABY’ When Lou Ann Nash was born on the “maternity porch” of Morton Plant Hospital in 1934, it was just the beginning of a close relationship that she would have with the hospital for eight decades and counting. At 82, Nash is a longtime hospital donor, the special events coordinator for women’s and children’s programs, a volunteer and unofficial poster girl. “I was sort of a miracle baby because my parents had been married 21 years before I was born,” Nash explained recently. Then five years later, Nash would have another miracle at Morton Plant. “My dad was in the citrus business and he would always take me out to the groves. I would stand up in the front seat, you know there were no car seats then. We were down in Largo and got hit and it knocked me out of the car, through the windshield, and onto an iron gate on the side of the road,” she recounted. When the ambulance arrived, the little girl wasn’t breathing, so she was covered with a sheet and taken to Morton Plant. But on the way, Lou Ann Nash started crying. When she arrived at the hospital, doctors saved her life. Nash would return subsequently for polio treatments, a tonsillectomy, to give birth to two children, have two knees replaced and undergo surgery for breast cancer. “I survived that and I’m still hanging in here pretty good,” Nash said, laughing. Along the way, she has been very active in the hospital’s foundation, supporting fundraising events and donating money. The foundation has helped keep the hospital at the forefront of medical developments. Nash was treated at Morton Plant’s Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center. “When we established that here 15 years ago there was nothing like that anywhere,” she said. “We had robotics for female patients, gynecological robotics very early on. The foundation rises to the occasion as much as it possibly can

not only for instruments but for education.” Nash is proud of the Earn While You Learn scholarships for employees who want to go to school while working at the hospital to become medical technicians or nurses. She’s one of very few sets of three generations of living relatives who were born at Morton Plant. Her daughter, Lisa Ann Nash Chapman, and son, Tom Chapman, were both born there. His children, Taylor, 26, and Tom, 21, were also born at the hospital. The thought of making it four generations has already crossed her mind for Taylor, who is married and living in Tallahassee, though not expecting a baby. But when she is, “I’ll probably drag her down here,” Nash said with a laugh.

HOSPITAL AMBASSADRESS When Shirley Long made a significant gift to Morton Plant, she wanted her funds to help bring a new program called the C.A.R.E. Channel to the hospital. Now patients can turn to the channel on televisions in their rooms and hear peaceful classical music while images of scenes from nature’s beauty move across the screen. It offers a soothing break from the news, reality shows, situation comedies or sports as patients rest and recover. It also serves as a serenade to others as they leave this world. “I’m just so happy with that. I know people who have used it in their final days,” Long said. Her gift also funds a channel that offers instructions to patients on medications, rehabilitation and other facets of recovery. These directions are also written in discharge papers, of course, but seeing it on the channel helps them better understand and remember their home care, according to hospital spokeswoman Beth Hardy. Long is the widow of her second husband, Harris E. “Zip” Long, a bank magnate who died in 2001 at the age of 88. She has tried to invest wisely and generously as he did, and Morton Plant is a key cause along with her church and the Long Center.

She especially enjoys working with Margie Atkinson, Morton Plant Mease director of pastoral care, in healing and spirituality programs. One facet of the program recruits nurses to speak to their own faith congregations about medical matters, such as warming signs of a stroke or heart attack, which can save lives. Another helps patients and families plan care for chronic conditions. “The chaplain is also there for end-of-life decisions and planning. I like being involved that way and working with Margie,” she added. Long is involved in the design and decor of another chapel that will go in the new tower. She’s even helping pick glass for the stained glass windows. Before moving to Clearwater in 1963, Long lived in a suburb of Boston and regularly made a 90-minute drive to Massachusetts General Hospital when her first husband was a patient there for some time. “After that I was so pleased to have Morton Plant close to where I live now. One of the first things I tell people who are new to the area is you can walk to the hospital,” she said. “I feel like I’m an ambassadress for the hospital.”

SURGEON AND SUPPORTER As the first female surgeon at Morton Plant Hospital in 1972, it didn’t take Zena Lansky long to prove herself. “In those days there were no trauma centers so all trauma accidents, with guns, knives, came to the local hospital. I had a couple cases right away that were so hard and so unusual; everyone knew I may have been a woman but I was a surgeon also,” Lansky said recently. The first case was a woman who had stabbed herself in the heart and was dying. Lansky had worked on similar cases during her residency at New York’s Bellevue Hospital. She quickly stuck her finger in the hole in the heart, opened the pericardium (the membrane enclosing the heart) to let the blood out and relieve pressure, then started operating to repair the damage and save a life. Soon after, a young man riding a bike was hit by a cement mixer. “His whole gut was hanging out. It was one of the worst cases I’d ever seen. The urologist said, ‘I don’t think we can do anything,’ and I said, ‘Yes, I can,’ ” Lansky recounted. “We tied off two vessels to stop the pelvic bleeding, did a colostomy, put a tube in the bladder, packed him (with gauze), closed him and planned to go back the next day and take the packing out. The urologist was overwhelmed and told everybody, ‘This girl knows what she’s doing.’ ” Lansky came to Morton Plant from New York because of the bayside location and beautiful community. “Because it’s in such a great location, we can attract such a high quality of doctors who have trained at the best hospitals and colleges across the country,” she pointed out. But it takes more than great doctors to make a great hospital, Lansky added. She also credits a forward-thinking administration, top-notch nursing staff and generous foundation that enables the hospital to obtain the most advanced equipment and practices. Lansky talked about friends who have gone to hospitals out of state for certain

specialties who say the doctors were great but the nursing staff and culture didn’t compare to Morton Plant’s. The hospital named its outpatient facility in Bardmoor the Zena Lansky Pavilion, to honor Lansky’s latest $1.5 million gift to Morton Plant. “I was the first doctor to have a building named after them. I wanted to set a standard for other doctors to give money to the hospital,” she said. “I have so much respect for this institution and I want the community to continue getting the best medical care.”

next time COMING FEBRUARY 12

YET ANOTHER SEASON OF GIVING IS UPON US Hold on to your holiday wish list because it will be giving time again when the next issue of Bay comes out. But words can often say more and be more appreciated than gifts when it comes to Valentine’s Day. So try giving a heartfelt sentence or two to the ones you love on vintage Valentine’s cards. Or make your own at the Paper Seahorse in Tampa where the art of the handwritten letter and personally crafted cards are making a comeback. Bay will have plenty of ideas to celebrate all kinds of love with friends, family and sweethearts. —Katherine Snow Smith
