EXPERIENCES AND TOGETHERNESS ARE WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT It’s here. The busy holiday season is in full swing. I hope sitting down with this issue of Bay will relieve some of the pressure. In the age of conspicuous consumption of material goods, consider the gift of travel. Whether you give a $100 airline gift card or a complete trip, recipients will be happy to picture the possibilities instead of figuring out where to put another necktie or throw pillow. This issue features great ideas to get those wheels turning. For a travel gift close to home, there’s Streamsong. The 16,000-acre resort with two golf courses, a spa, skeet shooting and fine dining is an hour southeast of Tampa in Bowling Green. The land was mined for phosphate for the past five decades by the Mosaic Company. Its topography
16 bay
DECEMBER 2018
now includes tall dunes, sand contours, natural bunkers and elevation changes that make for beautiful vistas and great golf. This holiday issue also highlights a family that has been reuniting in St. Petersburg for more than 50 years, drawing about 70 people together for a week in December to celebrate their closeknit Jewish roots. Also, Bay’s “Found It” stylist Whitney Cohen offers beautiful suggestions for setting a table for the season. So many distinctive businesses and people make up our Tampa Bay community and enrich the pages of Bay. This is why it’s very hard for me to leave the magazine and the Tampa Bay Times, where I have worked in a full- or part-time capacity for the past 23 years. I am
moving on, however, to a job with public relations firm B2 Communications in downtown St. Petersburg. Aswithanyoneluckyenoughtoworkinthesameplacefor alongtime,myco-workersarelikefamily.It’ssaidyoudon’t gettopickyourfamily, theyarethrustuponyou.Thesame goesforofficecolleagues. Butthroughsomanysharedexperiences, whetherit’s somethingmomentousinthenationalnews, coveringa hurricane, ahotdogluncheonatthestartoftheRays’season andmostly, theupsanddownsinourdailylives, colleagues becomegoodfriends. As editor of Bay and also the reporter who wrote most of the stories, many of the people I cover and the readers have become friends as well. I so appreciate the e-mails and even hand-written notes from readers. The hundreds of volunteers, donors and staff who do so much to support the arts, education and other philanthropy are always very eager to help with stories and fun to get to know. I realized this more than three years ago when I became editor of Bay.
But if I needed a reminder, I got it recently at Suenos de DalĂ, the museum’s New York-themed fundraiser. As the party wound down my phone was dead, so I couldn’t order an Uber ride home. I quickly scanned the crowd and saw museum director Hank Hine and his wife Laura. I asked her to call me a ride, but her phone wasn’t handy, so Hank, dressed as Andy Warhol with a spiky, white wig and turtleneck, happily did the honors. That’s why I love this community. Thank you for reading. I will miss you. — Katherine Snow Smith

BUBBLIES are a
NO-BRAINER BY LAURA REILEY
Champagne is a New Year’s necessity. So if you want to impress you can just go for the big-ticket bubbly. (Armand de Brignac brut gold, anyone?) But another route is to buy the best you can afford and then glam it up into a Champagne cocktail. We asked some of Tampa Bay’s mixology superstars for their best bets.
FRENCH 75 Dean Hurst has spent more than 30 years in the business, for many years as the director of spirits for the Bern’s Steakhouse Group (which includes Bern’s, Haven and the Epicurean Hotel) and more recently as the spirits program director for projects like CW’s Gin Joint, the Peabody and Lucky Cricket, Andrew Zimmern’s new restaurant in Minnesota. His passion these days is tiki drinks, but he was willing to part with his favorite bubbly concoction.
RECIPE
1 ounce VSOP Cognac (Park if you can find it) 1/2 ounce lemon juice 1/2 ounce simple syrup Champagne Shake with ice and strain into a Champagne flute. Top with Champagne. Garnish with a thin lemon peel.
“I don’t really have a Champagne drink that I love outside of the French 75, with gin or with Cognac (my personal favorite).”

ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT COCKTAIL Ro Patel started his career in the early 1990s at some of the hottest bars in London, shoring up in Tampa in 2008 to design the bar menu of Ciro’s Speakeasy, which opened in 2010 and was among the area’s first purveyors of craft cocktails. Since then he has started his own consulting company, designing the bar menus for Tampa Bay concepts such as the Getaway, Franklin Manor, Anise Global Gastrobar, Grille One Sixteen and others, before presiding over his own space, the Collection Bar at the Hall on Franklin, the area’s first food hall. He had a couple of Champagne cocktail suggestions, one of which is a play on a bellini that uses Wild Turkey Longbranch, Matthew McConaughey’s whiskey. It’s an 8-year-old small-batch Kentucky bourbon refined with Texas mesquite and oak charcoals.
RECIPE
1 ounce Longbranch whiskey 1 ounce peach puree* 4 ounces Brut Champagne Pour peach puree into a chilled 7-ounce Champagne flute. Roll puree around to coat half the glass. Add Longbranch whiskey and top with Brut Champagne. * To make the peach puree, chopped up one white peach into small 1-inch pieces and muddle until pulplike. Add 1/2 ounce simple syrup or honey. Squeeze a wedge of lemon into the puree to preserve its color.
Datz has built a reputation on audacious, inventive and sometimes downright goofy cocktails (but mind you, their bartenders have won some major competitions). Corporate beverage director Jon Griffiths had this seasonal and festive beverage that they serve in a copper gnome. Fresh out of gnome cups? Griffiths says you can substitute a copper mule mug on this one.
RECIPE
1 1/2 ounces Absolut Elyx vodka 1 ounce St. George spiced pear liqueur 1/2 ounce lemon juice 2 ounces spiced apple cider Champagne Add all ingredients to shaker tin with ice, shake, strain into copper gnome and top with Champagne.
Photographs courtesy of Datz Restaurant Group
SOUTHERN 75 Datz’s sister restaurant, Roux, takes its cocktails equally seriously but spins them in a let-the-good-times-roll New Orleans direction. Here is a spin on a French 75, this one with a deep Southern accent.
RECIPE
1 ounce Cathead Honeysuckle Vodka 3/4 ounce peach puree (Roux uses a product called “Real”) 1/2 ounce lemon juice 2 dashes Angostura bitters Champagne Add all ingredients exceptChampagne to shaker with ice. Shake vigorously, strain into Champagne flute and top with Champagne.

era and Greg Muzzillo expect a lively assortment of family and friends to join them for their second Christmas in their 3-year-old Davis Islands residence. At night, the steak and seafood feast is served on classic Lenox holiday china as everyone gathers around the mirrored dining room table set with silver candelabra and seasonal decorative pieces. “Everyone gets to open one present after dinner,” Vera said, “and then we like to ask everyone to make a New Year’s prediction about a family member.” Between them, the couple are the parents of 10 children, including two teenagers still living at home, and grandparents of three. Greg is founder and Vera is CEO of Proforma, a promotional product and printing company with 700 member offices and 50,000 clients worldwide. Business demands, especially at this time of year, mean the Muzzillos rely on the household staff when it comes to decorating the 23,000-square-foot waterfront mansion. Dozens of Christmas trees come out of storage. Hundreds of ornaments, wreathes, angels, Santas, candles and nativity figures emerge from the bubble wrap. “Not heirlooms, just items we collected through the years,” Vera said. A hired crew spends hours wrapping palm trees and stringing twinkling lights across the yard. Son Nicholas and daughter Isabella take charge of the trees upstairs. Star Wars collectibles in the rec room; a sports theme on the arts and crafts room tree. A few more finishing flourishes — stockings hung on the mantles; more holly here and there — and the Muzzillo family is ready for a very merry Christmas.

LIVING DONOR IS THE GREATEST GIFT Every day in America, thousands of people are informed they need an organ transplant. With the availability of organs always scarce, Living Donors are needed more than ever to save lives.
This holiday season, you can decide to give the gift of life as a Living Donor – and we can help you make that gift a reality. We are National Foundation for Transplants, and for 35 years, we have helped people just like you give the greatest gift of all. We urge you to visit our website to learn more about becoming a Living Donor and how to get this rewarding and vital process started. Working collaboratively – especially with transplant center partners – we help bridge the financial gap for more than 4,000 new patients every year. But our work can't happen without Living Donor participants. Participants, hopefully, like you. If you would like to become a Living Donor or a financial supporter of NFT, visit us at transplants.org. here’s an art to navigating the holiday season. Get the decorating done, send the cards, make sure everyone on the gift list is covered,
double- (and triple-) check the travel plans — and attend every party looking effortlessly glamorous. For that last item on the checklist, the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg is the backdrop for our holiday fashion spread of chic looks that will make you the spotlight exhibit of any gathering. Winter blues take on an elegance when this gown grabs the eye with its lace and sparkle, emphasized by Claude Monet’s Houses of Parliament: Effect of Fog, London. Simple, classic silver hoop earrings are the perfect accent to highlight the look while not overshadowing the dress.

MAKE IT ABSTRACT Go for a sleek column of subtle color with a splash of
brightness. The sky-high heels flow into the dress — the laser-cut work at the back of the shoe makes it look like an extension of the leg — and the bold jewelry brings pop like the colors in Syd Solomon’s Westcoastalscape.

The power of framing the face is shown by Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun in her painting Julie as Flora, Roman Goddess of Flowers, at left. The ruffle on the right shoulder of our party dress takes the eye up without overpowering, and the statement necklace keeps the focus there with the right amount of shine to highlight while the earrings add a kick. The wrist cuff gives a shot of pizzazz when it’s time to sip your drink. And above, a nod to the elegance of the season: a long black dress with subtle shine, jewelry that stands out with its size yet complements with its simplicity of color, framed by the grandeur of a mirror believed to have been designed to hang in Blenheim Palace, the largest private residence in the world.

Go for casual sophistication with a beaded jumpsuit and add a tassel necklace to elongate the look more. Toss a faux fur over your shoulder if the night is cool — or just to add a bit of attitude. Timeless sophistication is always in season, especially with the sultry cool of black and white from head to toe. An understated cuff and earrings are all that’s needed to accessorize when the dress comes with a standout jeweled neckline. Bookend the outfit on the bottom with crystal-dotted open-toed heels.

But we couldn’t stop. Plastic has undoubtedly made our lives more convenient. But at what cost? Our family has been involved in the community of Clearwater Beach for over seventy years. We welcome all of you to join us in saving our beautiful beach. We plan to be around for at least another seventy years. Sincerely, The Heilman Family

nspiration for a one-of-a-kind exhibition at St. Petersburg’s Museum of Fine Arts came to curators during meals in the “Sunday kitchen” of philanthropist Rachel “Bunny” Mellon’s farm in Upperville, Va. Stanton Thomas, curator of collections and exhibitions, and Jorge Vidal, manager of special projects, were visiting the 5,000-acre estate in search of items and ideas for their upcoming “Drawn to Beauty: The Art and Atelier of Jean Schlumberger” exhibition, opening Dec. 15 alongside the second national showing of “Jewels of the Imagination: Radiant Masterworks by Jean Schlumberger.” The visit brought them to the dining table with photographer Roger Foley, who was preparing his book on Mellon’s gardens. After studying his portraits of the grounds carpeted in a morning snowfall, they were moved to use Foley’s photos as the blueprint for their exhibition. They will be displaying jeweled art through the friendship of Mellon, who designed the White House Rose Garden for the Kennedys, and French artist Jean Schlumberger, who created much of her collection.

A preeminent designer for Tiffany & Co., Schlumberger’s pieces from Mellon’s collection will be on display in the “Jewels of the Imagination,” which premiered at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Complementing the visiting exhibition will be their locally fashioned “Drawn to Beauty” exhibition, including portions of Schlumberger’s collection from the archives of Tiffany & Co. as well as personal items from the artist’s endearing relationship with the late Mellon, the wife of financier Paul Mellon. Schlumberger met Mellon when she walked into his shop in New York in the 1950s and purchased an array of Christmas gifts. “DrawntoBeauty”alsowillincludeahomegrown connectionwithSchlumberger’sextendedfamily, specificallySt.Petersburg’sownYannWeymouth, whose uncle,Lucien“Luc”Bouchage, wasSchlumberger’slife partner.Weymouthwillspeakatanexhibitioneventin March, sharingsomeofhispersonalanecdotesabouthis uncleandtheartist. “It is special for us that the (exhibit) be here in our hometown city at the moment when the world is rediscovering Jean Schlumberger’s genius,” said Weymouth, who also has loaned Schlumberger’s drafting table to the exhibit. “I am honored that Johnny gave me his drafting table from Paris that I use to this day. It is for me a real treasure.”

The exhibit will trace the birth of the artist’s career creating buttons and eventually costume jewelry in the 1930s for French fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. He served in the French Army during World War II and in the late 1940s opened shops in New York and Paris. He became a vice president at Tiffany’s until he retired in the 1970s. His friendship with Mellon and her appreciation of his whimsical botanical and sea-life designs, including birds, butterflies and jellyfish, endured until his death in 1987. Her support of his work brought attention from celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo. His pieces were worn by some on the International Best Dressed list of the day, including fashion writer and editor Diana Vreeland and socialite Babe Paley. Mellon wore his croisillon enamel bracelet and gave Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis her first one as a gift. The bracelets, still referred to as “Jackie bracelets,” are sold today on the Tiffany website for $30,000 to $55,000. Mellon donated her pieces to the Virginia museum, which has included more than 135 of the Tiffany pieces in the “Jewels of the Imagination” exhibit. Thomas traveled to New Jersey to select jewelry from the Tiffany archives to display throughout the exhibit. “I got to have a breakfast tray at Tiffany’s with all these jewels,” he said. He selected some 20 pieces from Tiffany’s and the company also provided jewelry from private collectors. The MFA team located some of Schlumberger’s early sketches, costume designs and photos of his pieces worn by celebrities and friends. “I love his fish lighter — his first design he created out of precious metals,” said Vidal, describing the lighter that balances on its tail as his favorite in the exhibit. “It’s articulated and cool.” Vidal also is a fan of the mid-century modern themes in Schlumberger’s works. He designed the ashtrays on Mellon’s private plane as well as four settings for the 128-carat Tiffany diamond, including one worn by Audrey Hepburn during promotional appearances for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Thomas is partial to some of the more surrealistic designs, inspired by Schlumberger’s friendship with Salvador Dalí. He pointed to a pair of cufflinks featuring hands holding a ball. Visitors to the exhibit will see drawings of Schlumberger’s dolphin brooch given to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton after the wrapping of the film Night of the Iguana and the diamond-and-ruby Cross brooch owned by New York socialite Lady “Slim” Keith. Architect Weymouth, who designed the Salvador Dalí Museum and served as head of design for I.M. Pei on its Grand Louvre Project in Paris, had a close relationship with his uncle and plans to share stories of his passion for design. “Luc was not just my uncle, he was my best friend,” said Weymouth, who was raised by his French mother in the United States but spent summers after World War II in France. After attending Harvard University, also Weymouth’s alma mater, and serving in the military, his uncle was an accomplished photographer and served as art director for Harper’s Bazaar among other publications. Bouchage was introduced to Schlumberger by his sister, Jacqueline Schlumberger. His uncle and the artist “lived together and were inseparable until Johnny’s death,” said Weymouth. “Johnny was elegant, formal, very private, but warm and kind,” said Weymouth. “Our relationship was one of close family, easy, natural. Our conversations were wide-ranging about art and artistic movements, literature and travel.” His personal favorite Schulmberger design is a gold clock in the shape of a sea urchin. Additionally, he said, “Johnny’s design for Tiffany, the 16-stone ring, is very special to me — I gave one to my wife Susana.”

AN UNEXPECTED FLORIDA RETREAT BY LAURA REILEY
T
his land was mined for nearly 100 years for its phosphate and potash, most recently by Mosaic Company. There were electrically operated draglines equipped with large buckets, slurry pits and pipelines, high-pressure water guns, conveyor belts and dewatering tanks. In this particular mine in rural Bowling Green, about an hour southeast of Tampa and about 90 minutes southwest of Orlando International Airport, they pulled out more than a million tons of phosphate rock, in the process dumping 15 million cubic yards of sand here and there. Bottom line: Once a mining company has finished extracting the phosphate (a primary input in commercial fertilizers), the land is a crazy moonscape.
Traditionally, a company like Mosaic is tasked with an elaborate, and expensive, remediation process to set the land back to its original state. But someone got an idea: What if we take this 16,000 acres of land, with its grassfringed dunes, rolling hills and picturesque lakes, and turn it into world-class golf courses, essentially turning this lunar topography into an asset? And so Streamsong Resort was born. In January 2013 the Red Course opened, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, as well as the Blue Course designed by Tom Doak, both of which swiftly captured spots in Golfweek’s Best Top 100 Modern Courses. The lodge opened the next year. Streamsong’s Black Course opened in September 2017, designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, clinching the Streamsong Golf Resort and Spa as one of the bucket-list destinations for golfers around the country. Golf is not the only allure (the Red Blue Clubhouse is shown here). The 300,000-square-foot resort, designed by Alfonso Architects in Ybor City, includes 216 rooms in the main lodge, 12 rooms in the golf clubhouse, a fullservice spa, four restaurants and capacious conference center space.

Golfing
The 16th hole of Streamsong Red is generally considered the signature hole and sits along the signature 7th hole on Streamsong Blue. It’s a par-3 biarritz green, which is a putting green that features a deep gully, or swale, bisecting its middle, named for a course in France where the first-known biarritz was constructed. Players either travel down the gully or pitch over it. The hole features a tall sand dune on the right, water across the front, with a generous nearly 60-yard-long green. The course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2012 and ranked second in Florida on Golf Course Gurus’ Best in State list. Cost is $125 to $275 and walking caddies are $90 to $100 per player plus gratuity. Group caddies are $25 to $40 per player plus gratuity.
The spa
AcquaPietra is a coed 7,000square-foot grotto spa with six intertwining indoor pools in a range of temperatures, with steam and sauna rooms, eight private indoor treatment rooms and a salon, all of it with organic curved walls and massive concrete “petrified” tree columns, a motif echoed in SottoTerra, the resort’s intimate fine-dining restaurant that seats up to 40. Pro tip: Florida residents get exclusive discounts at the spa for things like massages or two-hour mini retreats that pair Swedish massage with a facial.
The history
The reason this area was so fruitful for phosphate mining? Millions of years ago it was a shelter for prehistoric mammals, their bones sifting downward and creating the phosphate rock deposits. People have called it “Bone Valley” to honor those ancient creatures’ remains. Architect Alberto Alfonso had those layers of deposits in mind as he designed the lodge. It has four layers: Submersion (underwater), Bank (where water meets land), Canopy (a sheltered aviary home at the top of the trees) and Sky. The Streamsong Lodge Leaf Lobby (above) features expansive views of Little Payne Creek outside, a lake with guided bass fishing for when golfing has lost its luster. The sixthfloor Fragmentary Blue cocktail lounge (left) offers 360-degree panoramas.
Relax
The Infinity Pool at Streamsong Lodge (right) provides views of much of the property, from Little Payne Creek to the clay shooting and archery areas, tennis courts and a 1.7-mile walking loop around the lake. Streamsong Blue (below) was created by Renaissance Golf Design’s renowned architect Tom Doak, who already has four designs ranked among the top 100 in the world. Known for routing play around natural features of the land, Doak said of the course, “Now we get to use these dramatic changes as the centerpiece to our golf holes.”
Dine
Streamsong Lodge (above) has an intimate 40-seat dinner-only restaurant called Sotto Terra in its lower level, as well as the all-day P2O5, its name a reference to the formula for phosphorus pentoxide. Out at the golf clubhouses are Bone Valley Tavern (middle), a newer restaurant located at the Streamsong Black course, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows from which to observe the course, as well as Restaurant Fifty-Nine (bottom), which services the Red and Blue courses and traffics in a traditional lineup of prime steaks and chops.

he yellow and red bingo cards are faded. A few of the plastic sliders need an extra push to reveal the number beneath. Thousands of hands have touched them since 1940, when they were used as a weekly source of activity at the Rellim Hotel & Villa on St. Pete Beach until it closed in1981. The cards have also been a tradition at more than 35 family reunions of the Miller family, who owned the Rellim. Five generations have spent a week each December in St. Petersburg playing bingo, competing in talent shows, sunning on the beach, playing tug-of-war, updating each other on their lives and lighting Hanukkah candles. “For a long time the family met every year at the Rellim. They all met during the holidays and the out-of-town family checked in as guests at the hotel,” said Jan Miller, who joined the family in 1994 when she married Jay. “When they sold the hotel, they made a promise they would still gather every year in St. Pete for a week and do the same things, but without the hotel.” Her husband Jay is the grandson of Jacob and Harriet Miller, who opened the Rellim — their name spelled backward — in 1940 in Pass-a-Grille. They had moved from New York to Pinellas County in 1926 and once enjoyed a seasonal membership at the Don CeSar. But when they were told other members objected to having Jewish counterparts, JacobandHarrietdecidedtoopentheirownresort.

Arden Katcha collects her prize from Jan Sher after winning a round of bingo.
They had been in the dry goods business with stores across from Williams Park, but found they were just as successful in hospitality. The two-story hotel had a full dining room that served guests three meals a day. On the beach side sat eight one-story “villas” with three rental rooms in each, a clubhouse, a pool and a coffee shop. People would come down from the Northeast and the Midwest for a week, a month or the entire season from November to April. Irwin, son of Jacob and Harriet, ran the hotel with his wife Sonya for most of its tenure. She kept guests entertained with games, talent shows, dances, theme dinners and other activities. She brought the same enthusiasm and inspiration to the family reunions. Since her death in 2017, her daughter, Jan Sher, has been the lead organizer and hosts the week’s most formal night with husband Craig. She collects photos from the past year from all family members to create a video that runs on a loop throughout the night. Also, the matriarch or patriarch of each family branch shares an update on what has happened in their lives since they last gathered.

“At some point we do something ceremonial. Even if it’s not actually Hanukkah when we are all together, we light the candles,” Jan Miller explained. “Some years, Hanukkah on the Jewish calendar does not necessarily fall when we get together. Often it is.” Jacob and Harriet Miller had four children who married and had a combined 10 children. Those children had children, and now their kids are starting to have kids. “We have all been together for five days straight and look at this. Everyone is still talking to each other like they just got here,” Howard Miller said as he scanned the crowd on his brotherJay’spatioonthelastnightofthereunionin2017. “The people here have plenty of options to do anything and go anywhere during the holidays,” Jay Miller said as he looked at the wide range of ages at his house. Uncles in their 70s are there from Connecticut. Cousins in their 40s made the trek from California. A cousin who lives in China brought his girlfriend. Stuart Berni, 70, lives in Greenwich, Conn., and has been at every reunion except one. “The only one I missed was when I was in a delivery room when my daughter was born Dec. 19 in 1983. For college-application essays, many of them wrote about the reunions and the strong bond their large family shares and tends to regularly. “It’s so special, all this love is here for everybody,” said Marilyn Benjamin. As the sister of Sonya Miller, she’s not a blood relative of the Miller family, but has been a beloved fixture at every reunion for years. “ It doesn’t make any difference if you are 2 months old or 90 years old. I love talking with everyone. I ask, ‘What’s new with you this year? Tell me something good that has happened in your life.’” The 2018 reunion will be no different.

HER LIFE OF ART ENRICHES SAFETY HARBOR BY PEGIE STARK PHOTOGRAPHS BY SCOTT KEELER
H
er gallery in Safety Harbor has stood the test of time. Syd Entel has gathered, purchased and sold a collection of international art since the early 1980s. From classical prints by Miró and Dalí to contemporary pop art works by Peter Max to innovative leaders like Michael Vollbracht, her collections at the gallery and at home are as diverse and rich as her life. We sat down with Entel and asked about her legacy in the art world. Was it always a lifelong dream of yours to start an art gallery? I always had an interest in art. Although I never had any formal training, I did enjoy painting. When my husband was in medical school and we were living in Geneva, Switzerland, I jumped at the opportunity to learn porcelain painting with a friend. I had free time while he studied, and found a great love for it. For example, I painted a whole tea service as well as many other pieces. When my husband completed medical school, we moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he took his residency. While living there, we had three young children. As the children grew, I was able to expose them to a variety of arts and culture in the city. I took my children to “mom and child” classes at the Museum of Modern Art. We came to Dunedin in 1962, when my husband joined a radiology practice. I continued to seek out art experiences in the community. I joined the Junior Service League of Dunedin and met lots of artists. Because of my interests, I became fine arts chairman, and together with our president, an artist herself, we took on the momentous job of raising money to build the Dunedin Fine Art Center that is thriving today. Our goal for the center was for it to be an arts and cultural center where you could view art and take classes. Did you study art? The first painting class I took was china painting. I enjoyed the intricate hand painting that I found myself capable of doing. I took many classes at Dunedin Fine Art Center
in various media and found them all challenging and interesting. I also went to museums and read many magazines and books about the arts. When you opened Syd Entel Galleries in 1980, what was it like? And how have you been able to stay so current and successful in a changing market? I first started the gallery, Contemporary Ltd. Editions (because we sold prints that were signed and numbered), in partnership with a friend who had just retired and had similar interests. I felt that the name was too restrictive for my taste, and we had a very friendly buyout, quickly changing the name to Syd Entel Galleries. With that change, I was no longer restricted to prints. I learned early to leave my options open. We still carry many types of “limited editions,” but we carry more and more original paintings and hand-blown glass now that my daughter Susan is the owner of the gallery. We were fortunate in tough times to have carried some well-known and soughtafter artists, and to be able to have shows of their works that our clients appreciated. Many of them appeared in person. Early on, we found it very convenient to establish our own frame shop. It not only saved us time in framing our art for the gallery, but assured us of having the quality conservation framing that our art deserved. We always had expert framers and state-of-the-art framing equipment that met the highest standards.

What is the process of finding the artists you represent? We find artists by going to national art shows, meeting the artists and their representatives, and learning about their background and philosophy. Since we are well established, often the artists and their representatives contact us. And there’s also a lot of word of mouth — who is out there doing something new and special. What kind of art do you have in your own home? A few masters like Chagall, Picasso, Peter Max, Chuck Close, Tom Wesselman and several lesser-known artists, some purchased from different galleries and from the Dunedin Fine Art Center shows. We also have hand-blown glass, including one by Harvey Littleton. Why Safety Harbor? We were attracted to a small town in the area where I had the opportunity to purchase a building on Main Street. It was strategically located on Tampa Bay, near Clearwater and Tampa. This was in the heyday of the Safety Harbor Spa, where many celebrities visited during season. They often visited the gallery, purchased art, and we became friends with many. Safety Harbor also had a reputation of being an “artistic” area. What’s next? I plan to continue my work in the arts community, supporting the arts, fundraising for the arts, and of course working with the Dunedin Fine Art Center on all of their efforts.

Syd Entel’s daughter Susan Benjamin, now owner, offered some insight on running the gallery in today’s market. How’s the art market today? We are in an interesting time. The economy is good but people are not buying a lot of art. Our original clients are older now and if we look to the younger buyers, they are less interested in purchasing original art works. The first trend that we ever felt is that when the economy is good, abstract and unusual works begin to sell. When the economy is in a downfall, traditional art works sell better — people being conservative. Right now homes are more contemporary and the trends are the different mediums people are using. We just finished a show on paintings that were done on metal. And we have a large collection of hand-blown glass which is very popular now. In fact, hand-blown glass is my passion.

being there, doing that The Dalí Museum Suenos de Dalí Along with being the site of Salvador Dalí’s first American solo show, the surrealist and his wife, Gala, were also regulars in the city that never sleeps. They frequented the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel, celebrated Andy Warhol’s birthday at Studio 54 and, obviously, filmed Dalí In New York there. Thus, it was highly appropriate to recreate the Big Apple for the Suenos de Dalí fundraiser held at the museum recently. “Suenos” translates to “dreams,” and there were plenty of surreal, over-the-top outfits Dalí could have seen in his slumber. Guests came as Audrey Hepburn, Liz Taylor, Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol, as well as New York icons such as a taxi cab and slice of pizza.
