Several friends told me they really liked Marie Antoinette at Freefall Theatre, but it wasn’t until I went myself that I realized how lucky we are to have easy access to productions like this one. The modern twist on the selfish and perhaps misunderstood queen was funny, sad, educational and thoroughly entertaining from the acting and costumes to the music and video montages. When I discussed it with other fans, we finished one another’s sentences agreeing that even the well-choreographed set changes were fun to watch. Almost every time I see a play, attend a concert or take in an exhibition at any of Tampa Bay’s many entertainment venues, I leave thinking I should go more often because the experience exceeded my expectations. We as a community are obligated to the directors, staff, talent, volunteers and faithful
donors of Freefall, Ruth Eckerd Hall, the Mahaffey Theater, the Straz Center, the Florida Orchestra, Opera Tampa, the St. Petersburg Opera and a multitude of art museums and other arts establishments small, medium and large in size. Thanks to the variety of offerings, there’s entertainment from Sting and the Florida Orchestra or the Miles Davis Electric Band to the Marriage of Figaro or comedian Chris Tucker. This issue of Bay touches on a few of the many aspects of entertainment in Tampa Bay, including a primer on the Dalà & Schiaparelli exhibition opening in a few days, an introduction to the new director of the Tom and Mary James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art and a behind-thescenes look at what it’s like to star on the stages of Tampa, Clearwater and St. Petersburg. There’s no way to recognize all the entertainment in our area, but I hope this prompts you to go out and see your longtime

favorites as well as something new. I’d love to finish with “Let them eat cake” as a bookend, or “kicker” as we say in journalism, but many historians believe Marie Antoinette most likely didn’t utter those callous words that have been attributed to her since 1789 when she was informed her French subjects had no bread. Lady Antonia Fraser, a biographer of Marie Antoinette, told the History Channel the quote would have been very uncharacteristic of the queen because she donated generously to charitable causes and, despite her own lavish lifestyle, displayed sensitivity toward the poor population of France. The quote also has been attributed to other selfish female monarchs before Marie Antoinette. Whatever the case, the uncertainty only highlights more reason for us to take in numerous forms of entertainment that not only entertain but also enlighten us and pique our curiosity for more study. So, I’ll just end with, thank you for reading. — Katherine Snow Smith

Tampa Bay’s a stage
When Shakespeare coined the phrase “all the world’s a stage,” in As You Like It, the bard meant that everyone, not just thespians, are always playing roles for others to watch, judge and interpret. While this is probably true of the world, including our little corner of it, we are lucky to have so many actual stages and performance venues across Tampa Bay. And we’re fortunate to have the talent to perform on these stages.
Here’s a look at three local actors who regularly impress audiences, how they got their start and how they stay in the spotlight.

Crafting characters, crafting a life BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH
A
t age 10, Becca McCoy sat in Demens Landing Park, entranced with The Tempest at American Stage’s Shakespeare in the Park. Thirty years later, she played the Lady of the Lake in the American Stage production of Spamalot in the very same location. “There’s no roof to the theater, just the sky, and you can hear your own voice bouncing off the buildings in downtown. It’s truly a thrill,” McCoy said recently. A lot happened between the time she was a child dreaming of performing and ending up on the same stage as an adult. But the circuitous journey home gave McCoy experience and perspective as well as the makings for her popular one-woman show titled Pearl in the Hogwaller. The actor’s odyssey began with youth theater programs around Tampa Bay and at St. Petersburg High School, from where she graduated in 1996. After graduating from Eckerd College, she acted in regional theater in West Virginia, where she met her husband, who works in technical theater. They moved to Indiana, Florida, South Carolina, then settled in Chicago. “We needed a bigger pool (of theater opportunities). He was hired as assistant technical director for DePaul University and I thought I would be in Chicago for the rest of my life,” McCoy, 39, recounted. She described playing Josie in Moon for the Misbegotten by Eugene O’Neill, the very first part she landed in the Windy City, as one of the roles of a lifetime. Several years later, McCoy filled another role of a lifetime and became a mother. Two months after giving birth to daughter Nancy, she auditioned for a new theater in St. Petersburg named Freefall and soon landed a role in its first production, The Wild Party. So she stayed in St. Petersburg with her parents and Nancy for a few weeks, while her husband moved to Palatka to accept a job with the Florida School of the Arts. “When I joined him in Palatka I had the most intense culture shock. I ended up writing my one-woman show about what a journey of self discovery it was,” McCoy said. Going from a working actor in Chicago to a stay-at-home mom in Palatka was a big transition, to say the least.

“At first I had this chip on my shoulder, and I was very degrading to this place and I couldn’t get past all that to realize there are good people everywhere,” she admitted. But, after immersing herself in her community, she developed a better sense of herself and learned to live the old adage: bloom where you are planted. Pearl in the Hogwaller pokes fun at McCoy and her situation, but also shares the lessons she learned. The show, which includes 22 pre-existing songs, sold out at American Stage and McCoy has also performed it in Chicago. Ultimately, the couple decided they needed to be near family and moved back to Tampa Bay. “We had moved 13 times in 13 years when (we) bought this house in 2014,” McCoy said from her home in Gulfport. While Tampa Bay didn’t have the variety of venues of Chicago, it has proven to be very fertile ground, allowing McCoy a fulfilling career as a professional actor with enough roles to maintain her union status that offers health care, a 401(k) retirement plan and other benefits. “I made it work. I crafted the life I want,” she said, adding that the diverse arts community in and around Tampa Bay has helped make it possible. “I would say the stalwart theaters that are here are all contributing something unique, and that’s how they are all able to sustain at the same time.” She points to her variety of recent roles. McCoy was in Shakespeare’s As You Like It at Jobsite theater in Tampa, in an obscure Broadway musical called Legs Diamond in Naples and in a play, Flying, the story of World War II women pilots, at Studio@620 in St. Petersburg and at Tampa Repertory Theater.

While she played Duke Frederick in As You Like It, ironically Nancy, who was in third grade at Sunflower School at the time, was also playing the same forceful ruler in the school’s annual Shakespeare production at Catherine Hickman Theater in Gulfport. “It was great. We would sit at the breakfast table running lines. We would walk to school running lines,” McCoy said. “She says she doesn’t want to be an actor, but she loves Shakespeare. The only camp she’ll take at American Stage is the Shakespeare camp.” But McCoy will never say never. And as for venturing to a big city stage again, such as Broadway, she isn’t saying never to that possibility either. “I will not lie. Those dreams still exist,” she said. “It could still happen.”

T
hough he has worked plenty hard, Rory Lawrence makes success as an actor, director and playwright seem easy, especially considering he was never trained formally in any of the fields.
After graduating from seminary, he worked numerous jobs but always wanted to try acting. He took some workshops in Tampa, secured a mentor and found he had a knack for the stage. He met other Tampa Bay locals with similar talents, started a production company, rented out Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City theater, and produced and directed a play called The Trip. The first night sold out. “It was a safe play. All the time the women were in a car. I couldn’t mess it up that much,” said Lawrence, 44, who is a financial consultant by day. He sold ads in the play program and secured sponsors to cover the cost of the production. “We said let’s see if we can do this again,” he recalled. “We did another one and it did well. We started to get a following.” That second play, Raisin in the Sun, was much more challenging because, aside from the powerful material, it was set in a different time period and everything had to correlate to that era. “I thought, ‘How hard can it be?’ Wrong,” Lawrence laughed. “I learned a lot on that. I learned to be real to the time period. I learned a lot on scene study and character development. … We did end up getting a good review.” Lawrence, a native of Mulberry near Lakeland, produced Raisin in the Sun at the Polk Theater. He has secured stages for productions at HCC, the Straz Center for the Performing Arts and Stageworks, by renting space when they were dark. Once Lawrence felt comfortable directing, acting and producing, he kept pushing himself. “I never intended to direct, produce or write, I just wanted to act. But then I decided to try my hand at writing. I had worked at call centers in the past and seen and heard some hilarious stuff,” he said, explaining how he came up with the idea for his first script, Between Calls. His mentor, Anna Brennen, Stageworks’ founder, warned him that comedy was very hard to write, but said he had a gift when audiences of Between Calls ended up belly laughing throughout the show. It’s about the dysfunctional people in the call center who, like at many workplaces, are
also a supportive family of sorts. “We had a super religious person, the overweight guy who ate all the time, the big flirt, a guy with hygiene issues, one guy who was angry all the time and the supervisor who was super smart but nobody respected him,” he recounted. “They come in and complain about their jobs and deal with crazy calls that come in, and they play the same numbers every week.” About five years ago, Lawrence was in downtown Tampa and saw lots of teenagers with armbands going in and out of the Straz. He found out it was a high school theater festival with youth coming together to learn and compete. He also found out there was no theater festival for adults in Tampa Bay. There is now. After checking out festivals in Washington, D.C., and Atlanta (his play Fighting God was performed at both), Lawrence started one here. The fourth annual Tampa Bay Theatre Festival drew almost 1,000 locals and visiting patrons in September. Five plays were chosen to be performed out of 50 submitted. There were also workshops and networking sessions. Though some festivals are focused on African-American work, Lawrence didn’t want the festival, or his other productions for that matter, to be categorized for a certain race. “I wanted our festival to look like Tampa — diverse,” he said. “I didn’t want to be put in a box.” He makes a point of not putting his picture on posters or other marketing for his works so they aren’t typecast. After all, Lawrence fell in love with the performing arts through plays that were about feelings and humor, not race. “I got hooked on theater when I was in junior high and saw Of Mice and Men at Mulberry Middle School and I thought ‘Wow. This really made me feel something,’” he recounted. The first role he played was the telephone repairman in Barefoot in the Park in high school. “I remember it like it was yesterday,” he recalled with a big smile. “I started doing my lines and when everybody started dying laughing I was like, ‘I like this a lot.’”

An old soul with great roles BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH
T
heatergoers who loved Matthew McGee’s rendition of Hairspray’s zany Edna Turnblad in the recent production by American Stage in the Park will be glad to know he’ll take the same stage again in 2018. Instead of playing Edna, he will portray the fast-talking Max Bialystock in The Producers. The character has been a favorite with audiences for decades, especially those lucky enough to see Nathan Lane play the madcap producer on Broadway.
“NathanLaneissuchahero.Formetobeabletoplaythe sameroleashedidisgreat,”McGeesaid.Anotherperkisthe limitedtimerequiredforhairandmakeupbeforeeachshow. “This past spring (in Hairspray) for the 8 p.m. show I had to get there at 5:30 p.m. every night to get in costume for Edna. I had to shave every night,” McGee recounted. “For Max Bialystock I can get there at 7:30 p.m. and put on a suit.” Thoughhe’sbeenactingsincehewasakidinWashington, Ga.,McGee,42,thinkshehasreallyhithisstrideinhis middleage.AteacheratValdostaStateUniversitypredicted itwouldbethatwaywhenMcGeewasinhisearly20s. “He said: ‘You’re really going to start working when you are in your 40s. You’re an old soul, and you are great playing older characters,’” McGee recalled. The mentor was right. While McGee has worked steadily since graduating, many of his best roles have come in more recent years. He went to New York immediately after graduating. There, “I found I had to do 100 things to still be broke. I waited tables, did drag shows, some regional theater, everything,” he laughed. Through a friend of a friend, he wound up at the Show Palace Dinner Theater in Hudson in their production of Fiddler on the Roof in 2001. A few years later the theater asked McGee to fill in short term as artistic director. “IsaidI’dhelpoutforsixmonthsandwastherefrom2004 to2012,”hesaid.Hefoundadditionalactingopportunities atAmericanStageandWaltDisneyWorld, whereheplayed abumblingknightintheTheSwordintheStoneaspartofthe MagicKingdom’sRoyalMajestyMakers.

Five years ago, when there was a change in ownership at the Show Palace Dinner Theater, McGee left his job there and soon landed at freeFall, where he’s director of audience development while still acting across the Tampa Bay area. He recently played JouJou, a hairdresser and confidant, in Josephine, at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota. Producers are trying to raise money to take the musical, which tells the story of jazz icon Josephine Baker, to Broadway. If it goes, McGee hopes to go with it. “Aside from playing Mame at freeFall, this role (in Josephine) was one of my great moments in my acting career,” he said. If he does end up on Broadway, however, he now knows his home is here. “Tampa Bay is where I want to live. I love the people here. This is where my theater family is,” he said, adding that he has another family at Moffitt Cancer Center, where his partner is an oncology nurse. McGee is also committed to spreading the word about freeFall. “I’ll talk to any group that will have me speak— civic groups, retirement homes, city programs, schools — and on both sides of the bay. I go to Sarasota, even,” he said. The theater, which is known for putting on classics with a twist as well as sleepers and world premieres, will turn 10 next year. “PeoplesaytomethatfreeFallistheirfavoritecommunity theater.Butweareactuallyaregionalprofessionaltheater company.Wepayallactors,designers,everyone.Only60 percentofwhatwedoiscoveredbyticketsales,”hesaid, addingthatthat’sarespectablefigureinthetheaterindustry. for five weeks. Six hundred guests subscribed to the full season last year, and well over 300 have already bought season tickets for the 2017-18 calendar and the brochure isn’t even released, McGee said. Along with promoting the theater, McGee also acts in it as well. He recently played the enigmatic sheep in Marie Antoinette. “I wouldn’t have thought 10 years ago about theater in Tampa Bay being as popular and as well attended as it is now,” McGee mused. “An artist is able to make a living in this area. It’s a hustle, but it can be done.”
People say to me that freeFall is their favorite community theater. But we are actually a regional professional theater company. We pay all actors, designers, everyone.” MATTHEW McGEE

MEET ELSA SCHIAPARELLI:
AVANTGARDE DESIGNER
T BY KATHERINE SNOW SMITH
he name Elsa Schiaparelli gave to her signature perfume in 1937 sums up her approach to fashion and life. She called it “Shocking,” during an era when most women felt they had to be the opposite. Yet the scent became a best seller. She even went a step further and designed a dress inspired by the scent and her client Mae West with air pockets in the bodice to give other women a voluptuous, “come-up-and-see-me-sometime” look. Like her friend and muse, Salvador Dalí, Schiaparelli was always going a step, or rather many steps, further than what was expected. That’s why the two will be celebrated together at the Dalí Museum’s exhibition “Dalí and Schiaparelli,” from Oct. 18 to Jan. 14.

Fashion is born by small facts, trends, or even politics, never by trying to make little pleats and furbelows, by trinkets, by clothes easy to copy, or by the shortening or lengthening of a skirt.” ELSA SCHIAPARELLI

The surrealist helped inspire the designer’s vibrant colors, nontraditional fabrics and ornamentation such as buttons shaped like crickets and leather gloves with red python skin on the fingertips to mimic polished nails. And then there were the pants she designed for women long before that was the norm, the telephone dial compact, and the evening dress with musical notes embroidered out of metallic threads with a working music box in the belt buckle. The Dalí will exhibit many of her fashions, some of which are on loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and host a fashion show with Schiaparelli pieces direct from Paris. Schiaparelli closed her Paris design house in 1954, but five years ago Italian fashion magnate Diego Della Valle announced he was reopening Maison Schiaparelli in the same Paris location where its namesake once operated. The Dalí will hold the fashion show Oct. 14 with haute couture pieces from the current house of Schiaparelli, bringing Paris chic to Tampa Bay. Tickets for the show and a gala after it start at $1,500 per person. Schiaparelli, who was born in Italy in 1890, chafed against the norms of society and parental control even as a child, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s timeline of her life. She once embedded seeds in her nose and ears in hopes of growing flowers to complement a face she felt was unattractive, National Public Radio reported. At age 23, she went to London to avoid pressure from her parents to marry a Russian aristocrat but ended up wedding a supposed Polish count within days of meeting him. After two years in Nice, the couple moved to New York. Schiaparelli had her only daughter there in 1920, soon separated from her husband and moved to Paris as a single mother in 1922.

While dabbling in writing and sculpting, and befriending dadaist painter Francis Picabia and fashion designer Paul Poiret, she also made clothes for herself and a few close friends. After selling a limited number of pieces to a bigger audience, Schiaparelli opened a small salon in 1927. She received a strong reception in the United States and Europe for her collection of sweaters with a square collar and bowknot knitted around the neckline. She had arrived. When Coco Chanel, the reigning queen of the Paris fashion scene at the time, publicly referred to Schiaparelli as “that Italian artist who is making clothes,” it was meant to be a jab, of course, but only inspired the irreverent “Italian artist” to work harder, according to the Business of Fashion website. By 1932, the house of Schiaparelli had 400 employees making 7,000 to 8,000 garments a year and the namesake was collaborating with Dalí as well as other artists such as Jean Cocteau and Leonor Fini.

Along with Mae West, some of Schiaparelli’s famous clients included actresses Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich and Daisy Fellowes, the Paris editor of Harper’s Bazaar and heiress to the Singer sewing machine fortune. Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor for whom King Edward VIII abdicated the throne, was also a devotee. She wore a famous Schiaparelli evening gown with a 3-foot lobster on the skirt, which will be on display at the Dalí. Only some clients wore her boldest designs, but American department stores stocked some of her more conservative pieces, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Schiaparelli moved back to New York during World War II and volunteered as a nurse’s aide at Bellevue Hospital. After the war, her return to Paris was hailed by the press, but a new generation of designers including Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga, carried more influence in the fashion industry. The House of Schiaparelli declared bankruptcy in 1954, its founder retired and built a house in Tunisia. She died in Paris in 1973 at the age of 83. Charles James, Geoffrey Beene and Yves Saint Laurent are among the fashion designers who say her gutsy challenge of what was expected influenced them greatly. Schiaparelli “trampled down everything that was commonplace,” Laurent once said. “Her imagination was boundless.”

Many of Schiaparelli’s designs were known for shock and drama while others were simply fun. She created black leather gloves with red python at the tips. An evening gown embroidered in musical notes with a music box in the belt buckle. A hat made out of a shoe. A necklace of bugs. These outfits aren’t quite as outrageous but follow her notion that sometimes just being fun is a way of showing your fashion sense.

CLASSIC
Not all of Schiaparelli’s designs went way out on a limb. Some just pushed the envelop or added a touch of finesse to something classic, like these silver stilettos do to this black dress with puffy sleeves.

CURTAIN
One of Schiaparelli’s most famous pieces is a full-length evening coat with the silhouette of two people about to kiss. The open space between the faces is an optical illusion of sorts that doubles as a curvaceous vase holding roses. Doesn’t every woman, even in Florida, need an evening coat for chilly theaters or breezy nights? This cream and black one goes with just about anything.

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY CHARLIE KAIJO
T
he highest moment of tension during the 24-hour, 100-mile sailboat race from Egmont Key
to Fort Myers was the first two minutes, according to Bryan Malone, the tactician of the Mad Cow 2, named after the disease outbreak. “This is the most adrenaline you’ll feel going three miles an hour.”
“We started to sail a fair ways, and then had to work really hard to get into shore without losing a lot of ground. We didn’t achieve that goal because we got what we refer to as ‘our head inside the boat.’ We lost our strategic view and were more dealing with what was happening on our own boat.” KATT MALONE
As 21 boats coasted just behind a starting point, crews of between five and seven moved to their positions in ready to hoist a large sail called a spinnaker that moves the boats downwind and on their way. Pulling the sails up moments too soon or too late can spell disaster for the teams jockeying for the most advantageous position to catch the best wind from behind the starting line. As the race time drew nearer, the crew began their prerace ritual. Crew member Katt Malone offered a fistbump to every member of the crew and a final one to her husband. “I’m the last guy who gets first-bumped, and then it’s a handshake and a kiss, ‘I love you,’ ‘I love you,’ ” said Bryan Malone. A flurry of colorful sails filled the sky as the starting gun went off, and from there, it was a nonstop race to optimize the speed of the boat in a test of endurance and vigilant observation of the changing winds and the constantly moving parts of the vessel. At least half the crew was always moving during the 24-hour period, adjusting the mast to move the sails in the correct position to the wind, trimming the lines (tightening or loosening the sail to try to keep it at its optimum shape and form) and steering the boat. And through the long evening and early morning when winds were at their highest, only one or two people at a time napped briefly through the turbulence.
Fire and Ice closes in on another sailboat, Mad Cow 2 during the 100-mile race from Egmont Key to Fort Myers.

Katt Malone of Tampa stands at the port aft of the Mad Cow 2 as the team tows a competitor called Attractive Nuisance to the starting line of the race to Fort Myers.
“We could sail the same thing we did last Friday, that same race, and it would be completely different,” said Bryan Malone. Each of the crew, joining at different levels of experience, had groomed their skills through the Davis Islands Yacht Club. “A sailor’s yacht club,” said Chip Merlin, the owner and skipper of the Mad Cow 2. “They’re the only yacht club I know that invites people who are non-members ... every Thursday night to come out and sail.” He said that while other sailing clubs may hire outside companies to build and repair the docks, volunteers contribute their time and energy and this helps keep the cost affordable and the club accessible to anyone interested in sailing. “It’s based upon a tradition and culture of, ‘if we do this

ourselves and we keep the costs down, it encourages people of all means to participate in any way that they want to.’ ” Katt Malone met her husband and crew tactician Bryan Malone through the club. Sailing started as a way for her to meet people when she moved to Tampa from Kansas to start graduate school in 2001. Her involvement grew as she rose through the ranks as a novice to reach their highest position as the club’s first female commodore. The sport has shaped the last 16 years of her life and began after a friend encouraged her to visit the club’s Thursday night races. She now helps others, regardless of their experience, gain their sea legs. She also teaches a course called Narratives of Sailing at Eckerd College. Back at the race, as the sun emerged from the horizon of Fort Myers, the team hiked the starboard rail (sitting

on the right side of the boat to counterbalance the weight) coasting at around eight nautical miles. The finish line was in view, but another boat, coasting ahead and appearing as a speck, took the winning position having kept a lead by sailing immediately toward the shore wind from the start of the race. The crew of the Mad Cow 2 intended the same strategy but went off course, a small but costly error. The reactions crossing the finish line were subdued and met with relief and two bottles of champagne as the crew celebrated the accomplishment, what Bryan Malone described as a crucible where your true self emerges. “A lifetime of podium finishes,” Malone said. “I am truly living a charmed life if I am upset about finishing third overall and second in class.” Chip Merlin as the team crosses the finish line.

“I felt very happy we did the best we could, and I thought everybody had a pretty fun time doing it. Doing these long distance races is one thing. I feel very exhausted when I’m done with them and that’s because of the amount of things I have to think about for such a long period of time.” CHIP MERLIN

The remodeled ballroom. The public can rent the club and ballroom for weddings and parties. At left, the new outdoor sitting area.
Clark, an Irish immigrant who started his candy empire in Pittsburgh, paid $156,000 to St. Petersburg developer Perry Snell, who built the course in 1925. The candymaker sold it 14 years later to the owners of the Vinoy Hotel. It has had various additions and makeovers since then and has just reopened after a 15-month renovation that elevates the casual retreat to a more polished, upscale resort amenity for hotel guests, members of the Vinoy Club and anyone from the public who wants to rent it for an event. A new pool with sprays of water flowing from its sides is about double the size of the former oval one and boasts a splash pad with water spouts for kids. The pool deck includes six cabanas with fans and refrigerators and 120 loungechairswithcomfycushionscomparedtojust35deck chairs before. There’s also an outdoor lounge with crisp
white and green furniture that’s comfortable and weatherproof and beckons guests to gather and relax before, after or instead of golf and swimming. The ballroom maintains its original elegant Mediterranean structure and accents, such as sculpted columns and colorful mosaic tiles, while new carpet, furniture and lighting make it brighter and more contemporary. “We sometimes say we’re where historic meets hip,” said Barbara Ready, general manager of the Renaissance Vinoy St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club. The ballroom, which was originally an open-air terrace in the 1920s, is available to be rented for functions as small as a business luncheon to a seated wedding for 200 people. The catering and restaurant menus have been totally revamped to offer more upscale steak, chicken and seafood entrees.

The remodeled Vinoy Club Grill restaurant.
What was formally just the Clubhouse Restaurant is now the Vinoy Club Grill with a more sophisticated look combiningglass, smoothwoodsandgoldaccents.Anewcovered terrace has doubled the number of dining seats to 120. The bar, like many others across the country, offers craft cocktails as well as wine on tap, which isn’t as common yet but part of a growing trend. The tap limits oxidation, so every glass poured is like the first taste of a newly opened bottle. “We take this for granted, but who wouldn’t want to eat their meal here and look out over this golf course?” Ready said. Prices at the Vinoy Club Grill are higher than before the renovation, with lunch entrees ranging from $12 to $18 and dinner entrees going for $25 to $42. The newly added pool side Clark’s Snack Bar, however, offers options for $6 to $16 and pays tribute to D.L. Clark. It sells the original Clark Bar made of milk chocolate and a peanut butter crunch that dates back to 1886. The snack bar offers takeout for golfers, as well. A $250,000 upgrade of the course includes a new covered staging area, putting green and chipping area. Several holes are being redesigned and enhanced with hills, creeks and landscaping so that none are in view of others, said golf supervisor Yong Park.
Golf locker rooms have a whole new look, as well, with personalized nameplates on lockers (there’s a waiting list to lease your own), clouded glass-door showers, flat screen TVs, and tile and lighting similar to what’s found in top-ofthe-line spas. The Snell Isle facility and downtown hotel are in the process of a change in ownership. Maryland’s FelCor Lodging Trust, which purchased the Vinoy in 2007, is being acquired byRLJLodgingTrust, thepubliclytradedrealestateinvestment trust owned by BET founder Robert Johnson. The three-year, $50 million upgrade of both Vinoy properties will continue as planned.

OCTOBER 2017
ust three weeks after starting as the inaugural director of the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art, Bernice Chu seemed to know the project as though she’d been involved since its birth. From the smallest details such as standing desks in offices (“Sitting is the new smoking,” she laughed) to Tom and Mary James’ philosophy of supporting working artists, Chu spoke with authority and pride as she led a tour of the museum now under construction. She didn’t call it simply “the museum” or “the James Museum” but usually referred to the facility as “our museum.” “Our museum is not just about cowboys and Indians and birds and wolves,” said Chu. “It’s about the artists. (Tom James) wants the artists to create art. That’s the reason why he buys art.” And, of course he cares about value, but that’s not the sole reason, she added. The 84,000-square-foot museum slated to open next spring will house 400 works of art of the more than 3,000 pieces that Mary and Tom James, chairman emeritus of Raymond James Financial, have collected over 50 years. The former headquarters of Universal Health Care at 150 Central Ave. is in the midst of a major renovation inside and out. Sandstone and copper will cover the exterior while the interior will include a walkway across the peak of a twostory granite waterfall, all of which give the feeling of a canyon out west instead of a busy street in Florida. When Chu was interviewing for the job at the St. Petersburg museum, she read a lot about Tom and Mary James’ longtime support of artists as well as the Tampa Bay community, and that made the museum even more attractive, she said. The fact that she would be getting in from almost the start was another plus. In past positions she was charged with “fixing” aspects of existing museums. When the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York went from being open six days a week to seven in 2013, Chu was brought in months before to oversee the transition, which involved everything from employees’

schedules, to maintenance of exhibits to housekeeping. And when the Art Institute of Chicago was adding its 260,000-square-foot Modern Wing, which opened in 2009, Chu was asked to oversee a reorganization and renovation of the existing 700,000 square feet. “It’s easier when there is nothing there to begin with,” said Chu. For example, she plans for security guards to also act as guides who can interact with visitors and tell them about the museum’s collection. At her most recent post as the director of facilities and operations for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Chu was part of the endeavor to ask existing security staff to undergo training so they could be guides as well as guards. Most were pleased to add this component to their jobs, while some said they’d rather not, so the change was harder to implement. Chu was trained as an architect and oversaw design and construction of financial firms on Wall Street at the beginning of her career before becoming an independent consultant. Then one day, the N.Y. Botanical Garden in the Bronx came calling and asked if she would be its new director of design. “I didn’t know anything about horticulture when I started,” she said. From there she went to the Art Institute. “I didn’t know anything about art,” she added. But from the beginning of her career, Chu started asking questions of contractors and the trades, such as electricians or plumbers, to see if her plans would mesh with the nuts and bolts of a specific project, and the same philosophy applied to curators and conservators. “We had to be understanding of what was actually possible not just what we wanted,” she said. Now at the James Museum, Chu has no background in western or wildlife art, (her favorite artist is Lucian Freud) but already she has a vision for the museum. “I want it to be really engaging. … It’s got to tell a story,” she said. With this goal in mind, she will help develop a short movie to introduce the art and the history of the West to museum guests. This is just one of many things on
Chu’s “to do” list, which also includes hiring employees, developing a volunteer docent program as well as the museum’s educational component and making sure it will have successful profit centers. The projects are a team effort, including Emily Kapes, curator of art, and Julie Matus, the new education director. “The event space is what brings the revenue that will help support the museum,” she said, as she toured through the bones of the museum that will soon seat up to 400 people for elegant functions. “Our museum” will also feature a retail store, a restaurant and a cafe with an antique bar from San Francisco, an idea envisioned by Mary James. “With all the condos being built downtown, I think the bar area will be a great place for people to come and have a drink,” Chu said.

next time COMING NOVEMBER 12
IT’SNOTTHATFAROFF
I struggle with bringing up the holidays in mid October because I’ve always been annoyed with retailers who pressure us long before we really need to start thinking about the next season. But by the time the next Bay reaches you in early November, you might want to start getting in the mood. A spread of houses featured on the Florida Orchestra Guild’s Holiday Tour of Homes in St. Petersburg shows a variety of ways to decorate the tree and set the table. Bay also will go inside the home of University of Tampa president Ron Vaughn and his wife, Renee, to see multiple trees decorated with themes that include cats, fish, gingerbread and, the campus icon, minarets. Now that Cuba is so accessible, we’ll find out how to get the best cigars, which make for great gifts. If you want to give or serve something that hails from right here in Tampa Bay, we’ll offer up suggestions for that, too. As for what to wear for this festive time of year, you can’t go wrong with a classic black dress, or a classic black dress with a twist. Our fashion spread will salute the black cocktail dress in the location where one of the most famous ones became an icon , Tiffany & Co. — Katherine Snow Smith
