LET SPRING BE YOUR INSPIRATION

Our tourism friends created snow creatures to catch the attention of sun-loving people in the snowy Northeast and Midwest this winter. Those should be memories by now as local residents already are reveling in spring. Poolside or ballpark, bicycling or dog-walking, we are often in motion this time of year, which is why those of us who work on the magazine think of this one as Bay’s “body issue. The Tampa Bay area’s Rhonda Shear, well-known for her shapewear designs, now takes a turn with evening gowns in a custom collection that debuted in Hollywood in time for the Oscars. In additional fashion trends for the season, classic partners black and white are enlivened with bright shots of color, and blow-dry salons are increasing in popularity with clients who want a polished look. Colorful glass gets a star turn in the hardware assembled at Tierra Verde’s Out of the Blue Design Studio for patrons throughout the world. We treasure all of you and encourage you to indulge in this perfect season for being out of doors. — Mary Jane Park

GOING WEST Weighty neutrals drawn from deserts and prairies ride into spring, with reptile patterns, fringed leather, metals and stone taking the lead. There’s a decidedly Western influence here.

TURN STYLES BY MARY JANE PARK

The trend started in New York and Los Angeles, where executives and entertainers are perpetually camera-ready. In the Tampa Bay area, custom hairstyling often has been reserved for special occasions such as proms, weddings and charity galas. Times are changing even locally, said Cynthia Keenan, owner of Tampa’s Blo Blow Dry Bar, one of a growing number of salons that specialize in blowand-go coiffures. “Our guests are a wide variety of people with different needs, everyone from a full-time busy executive who comes in once or twice a week — she knows her hair is going to be perfect — to stay-at-home moms, to business travelers.” Clients in that last group, Keenan says, book appointments from their hotels or “roll their suitcases in before a meeting,” their flights just having landed at Tampa International Airport. Keenan and her husband, Brian, opened the salon last July. A friend sent her an article about the franchises, whose founders are actor Gwyneth Paltrow and celebrity hairstylist David Babaii. “We deserve this in Tampa,” she said.

Blo offers a membership discount option and a style “menu” that includes the Hollywood, a curly classic pin-curl look with “lots of volume,” and the High Society: Think “ballerina with a bun,” Keenan said. Stylists are trained in techniques for all hair textures, and pricing is uniform for all hair lengths. “We don’t care if you have hair down to your knees,” Keenan said. Blo specializes in other services such as massage, waxing and facials; its hair professionals do only shampoos and styling, not cuts and color. “You’re not cheating on your hairdresser,” she said. “Before we opened, I asked for my hairdresser’s blessing. We’re fast. We’re expert at these kinds of styles. We get you in and out as quickly as we can.” In Sundial St. Pete, the Marilyn Monroe Spa & Glamour Room offers monthly memberships for a variety of services, including blow-dry styling appointments. “That trend has been on the rise since 2010,” said Linda Warren, chief marketing officer for Marilyn Monroe Spas. The corporation has hotel and standalone outlets throughout the country. “Usually people will want to come in for one or two (sessions). Once they have done that, they come in for the unlimited package.” Even as an employee, “I have to say, I bought it right away. I would love to never wash my hair again.”

READY TO POUNCE BY PETER COUTURE One of the world’s iconic sports cars, the E-Type Jaguar, is the embodiment of successful automotive design. It’s been celebrated in popular culture from the Museum of Modern Art to Mad Men. When that sleek beauty’s spiritual successor, the F-Type, was at last introduced — as a convertible — it was named the 2013 World Car Design of the Year. “The F-Type is a sports car that is true to Jaguar’s design values — beauty of line and purity of form,” Ian Callum, Jaguar’s renowned director of design, said at the time. That’s a hard act to follow. But Jaguar rolled out a coupe version last year after the success of the roadster, and the result is an even more striking car. Just look at the 2015 model shown here, the high-performance, 550-horsepower F-Type R, with its classic proportions of a long hood that flows into the sinuous, arcing roofline that ends in muscular rear haunches. The car, perhaps echoing the classic Jaguar’s “Leaper” logo, really does look coiled and ready to pounce. Even the supercharged V-8’s throaty exhaust notes — all cracks and pops — sound like the roar of a big cat. Up front, the appearance is equally aggressive; even the head lamps, with Jaguar’s signature “JBlade” LED running lights, look predatory as they flank the clamshell hood. From the rear, there are design nods to the classic E-Type: a liftback hatch, quad tailpipes, the curvaceous fender panels, even a circular taillight accent. It’s dramatic, but not over the top like an exotic supercar. No, this is everyday style. Automobile aficionados seem to agree that the F-Type coupe is an instant classic: Car and Driver placed it atop its list of the 10 most beautiful cars for sale today. But let’s let Jaguar’s Callum have the last word. Asked about his career achievements, the celebrated designer declared to Britain’s Sunday Times: “I think the proudest moment was the launch of the F-type coupe.” Well played, sir. Car and Driver magazine listed the F-Type coupe Jaguar as one of the 10 most beautiful cars today. Photographs by Scott Keeler

SMART STEPS The Campbell’s Soup Cans images produced by Andy Warhol created a stir in the 1960s, prompting many a discussion about their creative merit. Popular culture and celebrity fascinated Warhol; his portraits of stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe are recognized worldwide. The artist, who once famously used a Converse Chuck Taylor All Star shoe as a blank canvas, is the focus of a new collaboration between Converse and the nonprofit Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. We happen to think that the Campbell’s Black Bean Soup Chuck Taylor All Star ($70) is a perfect cultural nod to the Cuban roots of Tampa’s Ybor City. A portion of the proceeds go to the Warhol Foundation. converse.com; warholfoundation.org. — Mary Jane Park

body of art

BY LENNIE BENNETT

The human form was the first and remains the most enduring subject in art. The representations that children draw in their early years — a circle for a face, lines for torso, legs and arms — are seen in some of the earliest examples of ancient cave drawings. The similarity isn’t a coincidence. Creating likenesses of ourselves is a meaningful way of understanding ourselves and our place in particular times or circumstances. We have only to look at the way the body has been interpreted by artists through the centuries, using examples from some of our regional museums, to see how true this self-absorption is. The gods of the ancients were mythological creatures, invented to make sense of the natural world and its cycles. They were deities to whom supplication and appeasement could be made. And they were usually depicted in versions of the ancients’ ideals of physical beauty and representations of the people who worshipped them. A marble statue of Poseidon, god of the sea, in the Tampa Museum of Art’s collection, is an example. Unlike the Greek and Roman gods, Jesus was a real person; regardless of one’s faith, his existence can be documented. Because he was born a Middle Eastern Jew, he probably looked nothing like the por-traits we typically see. Artists through the ages give him the appearance of their own people as we see in an early 16th century painting from the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. Everyone and everything in this Nativity scene is straight out of the Italian Renaissance, creating a fictive narrative instead of Jesus’ real world because the fiction was more comfortable and, in viewers’ minds, more beau-tiful than reality. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria was also a real person, but her portrayal, unlike that of the Holy Family, is very real, too. She was probably given the equivalent of a modern-day facelift by the painter Martin van Meytens; however, everything in this work, in the collection of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, reflects her place in the world as one of the most important rulers of the 18th century. Today, she is more famous as the mother of the French queen Marie Antoinette, but her power is palpable in the painting’s details: sumptuous clothes, multiple crowns that allude to her empire’s extent and luxurious surroundings. What a difference two centuries make in how we see ourselves. This work by Salvador Dalí from the Dalí Museum’s permanent collection is, like the other works here, a portrait. It has more in common with them than its appearance suggests. It, too, is representational. Unlike the others, though, this represents ideas; it’s more metaphor than person. And it reflects its time, the early 20th century, when art was being defined more broadly and artists were looking inward for their outward inspiration. In a strange way, Dalí takes us back to the beginning, when people were made up of simple shapes. We are what we make.

FRESH LOOK ON BOARD BY MARY JANE PARK

PHOTOGRAPHS BY JOHN PENDYGRAFT

Weary of the chill, dreary winters in the Pacific Northwest, Ernie Reinhard bought a winter home on the water in St. Petersburg in 2011. Next, he brought in his boat, a 72-foot Maple Leaf ketch that he docked in the Municipal Marina. Reinhard had owned Breathless for nearly two decades. For the last 10 years, he kept it near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. “I bought a slip down there, right next to a restaurant,” he said. “We kept it there and went up and down the coast of Mexico.” Reinhard, who travels frequently between his homes near Seattle and St. Petersburg, said he renamed the craft after he purchased it from the original owners “because she takes your breath away.” As he commenced renovations on the St. Petersburg home, he sought ideas for freshening the look of the boat, which now is moored behind the house. “Have you ever realized how shallow your water is?” he inquired. “I have a 7-foot draft. It’s very challenging to get this little girl around.” For the onboard redecoration, Reinhard turned to Jean D. Irwin, owner of Yacht Concierge, who specializes in interior design. “The main salon was floral and had a turquoise carpet, which was great for sailing in Mexico,” she said. “But this 72-foot lady needed a slick new look.” Throughout the main salon and pilot house, she used neutral upholstery, carpet and draperies to showcase the refinished wood, “impervious materials that can be cleaned easily,” and colorful accents such as throw pillows. She also selected art for the bulkheads. The boat’s captain, Larry Rosales, did the brightwork.

Interior designer Jean D. Irwin used neutral upholstery, carpet and drapes throughout the yacht to showcase its abundant refinished wood.

Neutral colors throughout the yacht let the gleaming wood’s natural beauty take center stage. At left: A touch of color pops in the dinette of the 72-foot Maple Leaf ketch that owner Ernie Reinhard renamed Breathless “because she takes your breath away.” Below: A channeled headboard replaced the flat one in the master stateroom. The renovations took five months to complete.

In the two guest rooms, Irwin chose shades of blue-striped Ralph Lauren fabric. A channeled headboard replaced the flat one in the master’s stateroom, and a quilted spread covers the bed. Over five months, she and Rosales undertook the renovations. And although she had suggestions for the galley and stern, Reinhard chose to leave them for now. Irwin said she knows the importance of creating a retreat on the water, where one leaves all stresses behind. “Helping an owner with the choices on his yacht interior is similar to starting a new relationship,” Irwin said. “It takes time to know their personality and needs. We learn together what works.”

She is known throughout the world for her popular curve-friendly shapewear collection. And now, actor, comedian and HSN personality Rhonda Shear has taken her sense of style to the red carpet: Her eveningwear collection, Shear Couture, debuted in February, just in time for the Academy Awards. Publicists and stylists often choose the costumes that stars wear for celebrity appearances. Shear turned to some of her longtime Hollywood connections, and several of the dresses were seen at the Oscars and at A-list after parties hosted by Elton John and Vanity Fair. Aria Raphael, who wore the feathered “Champagne Kiss” gown to the ceremonies, “really appreciated it and commended me,” Shear said. “This makes me as excited as when I got the first call from Happy Days. (She played Fonzie’s girlfriend on the show.) For the first time out, we were thrilled.” The custom evening gowns start with smoothing underlays and body suits onto which the gowns are constructed, then embellished with details such as sequins, crystals, beading and feathers.

“Champagne Kiss” is a feathery mix of various textures in neutral tones.

“You put it on, and it fits,” Shear said. The bodysuits leave no telltale lingerie lines, and, crucial for awards shows, “no malfunctions.” As a onetime Miss Louisiana, an actor in movies (Spaceballs) and television (Married with Children) and later host of USA: Up All Night, Shear has spent much of her adulthood in the entertainment industry. “I was always on camera, fighting sizing,” she said. “I am a curvy girl.” Her career as a clothing designer “started in a secondbedroom office” when she and her husband, Van Fagan, lived in California. HSN was looking for intimate apparel. “I had been designing my whole life,” she said, “except not professionally.” In 2003, on her first broadcast with the retailer, she sold 6,400 pieces and brought in $28,000. “From the first year to the second, our business grew 1,100 percent,” she said. Shear Enterprises was “at the beginning curve of shapewear,” offering “seamless innovation beyond boring hooks and eyes,” and later introducing shaping jeans, skirts, loungewear and leggings. As her appearances on HSN became more frequent, she and Fagan were flying to the Tampa Bay area more often and returning to California “less and less.” They relocated to St. Petersburg. At the Shear Enterprises headquarters, she works with associates who put her ideas on paper and turn them into reality. Custom clients are measured on site or submit a detailed list supplied to them and then consult about styling, fabric and decorative details.

“Paris Illusion” has crystal embellishments and a billowy blackand-white print skirt.

“Purple Passion” features Swarovski details on the bodice. The skirt and train combine layers of color and patterns for an elegant, rich statement.

The average girl (in the United States) is a size 14. A size 4 who is 22 is not a size 4 who is 62. RHONDA SHEAR

The gowns start at $500 and can run much higher depending on customers’ requests for fabric and adornments such as hand beading. Still, Shear stresses, “We can work within a budget. I want to make these obtainable for all women.” Shear Couture’s focus is on cocktail and evening dresses, in a range of sizes from 0 to 3X. Custom bridal options also are available. “The average girl (in the United States) is a size 14,” Shear said, and formal and semiformal options are limited in extended sizes. Regardless of the numbers on the labels, bodies change with age. “A size 4 who is 22,” she said, “is not a size 4 who is 62.” Beyond bespoke clothing, the company is in negotiations with a retailer that has 150 stores. “Van and I have been wanting to manufacture here,” she said. “We are able to do that with small runs.”

Photographed at home, Rhonda Shear wears her “Garden Goddess” design, with embroidered lace and hand-placed feathers and Swarovski details. Modeling with Rhonda is Lexie, her 4-year-old rescue chihuahua.

That’s the sequined “Royal Radiance” gown, photographed in the Shear Enterprises media room. The library has Rhonda Shear memorabilia back to the 1980s: VHS broadcast tapes, posters and clippings. Hair and makeup by Wade Simpson and Steven Anderson.

living well

from the ground up BY ELAINE LOUIE

A Miami couple trained as architects decide to build their own house — by hand. The result is 1,500-squarefoot Florida modern-style home with an open plan. They learned a lot, and found a lot of help along the way.

Some people build their own doghouses or tree houses. Jacob and Melissa Brillhart’s DIY project was a little more elaborate: They hand-built a 1,500-square-foot house. Never again, they insist. Still, one wonders, why do it in the first place? Sure, they are both trained as architects, and he has his license, but most architects are content to leave the heavy lifting to the contractors. Jacob Brillhart, 40, thinks it may have had something to do with the way they were raised. He grew up in Canterbury, N.H., home of the Canterbury Shaker Village, which “had some kind of influence on me,” he said. “A very spare, clean design.” More important, perhaps, was what happened when he was 5: His parents gutted and renovated a 1780 house. With the help of family and friends, they tore down the walls and built new ones, sanded and refinished the floors, and redid the bathrooms and kitchen. What’s impressive about this is that they weren’t in the building trades: His father was an engineer and his mother, an illustrator. “I don’t think my family is quite as extreme,” said Melissa Brillhart, 38. But her father, a business executive, had a hobby: renovating and flipping houses. By the time she was 16, she had helped him demolish a kitchen, tearing down cabinets and ripping up countertops. So in 2011, while the couple were living in a one-bedroom apartment in Miami Beach, they decided they should build their own house. Recalling their parents’ fearlessness about doing it themselves, Jacob Brillhart said, “If they can do it, why can’t we?” What they discovered is that when you set about doing something yourself, help often presents itself at every turn. After they bought a half-acre lot in downtown Miami for $165,000, for instance, they settled on Florida modern, a style of open-plan architecture popular in the mid 20th century, as their inspiration. And they were able to find local architects who had designed some of the original homes to advise them.

“They taught us to go back to the basics, to time-tested strategies,” Jacob Brillhart said. “Cross-ventilation and orienting the building so the front porch blocks the direct sunlight on the glass, so you don’t heat up the interior.” They also advised the couple on how to assemble the steel frame and the wood substructure. And when the couple bought some ipe wood for the exterior of the house at Flatriver Woodworking & Construction in Fort Lauderdale, the owner, Matthew Cumings, offered to let them have free run of his shop and the use of his planer and jointer to finish the wood. When they were done with that, he lent them his truck to transport it to the building site. As Cumings said, “I started out on my own, without any backing, and they were doing the same thing, and I was just trying to help.” Jacob Brillhart’s father and uncle also donated their labor, and his family gave the couple the cherry wood they used for the bathroom and kitchen cabinets, the door frames and the interior louvered doors. (His father had been buying it at farm auctions over the years.) And they had the (paid) help of several plumbers, electricians, welders and roofers. Still, it wasn’t always easy going. “There was no division of labor,” Melissa Brillhart said. “If there was something I could do, I would physically do it” — including laying the joists and building the subfloor. The house was completed last fall, at a cost of about $375,000, but they moved in a year-and-a-half before, while they were halfway through the construction, and lived there with only a few amenities: a minimal shower, toilet, bathroom and kitchen sinks, a secondhand stove and a mattress. With no dishwasher, they sometimes washed the dishes outside, using a garden hose. Building your own house is possible, it seems, but not always that much fun. “It’s physically exhausting,” Jacob Brillhart said. “We don’t need to do this again.”

Celebrating Brazil’s victory over Chile at a street party in the Tijuca neighborhood, near the Maracana Stadium. Street viewing parties and fireworks were prevalent throughout the FIFA World Cup competition; Rio is the site of the Summer Olympic Games beginning in August 2016.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil took me to Rio de Janeiro last June, but the kaleidoscopic sights and sounds of the city’s neighborhoods were what swept me away. Lapa, for example, is a cultural draw for residents and tourists alike, an area teeming with clubs and bars. Its broad array of venues, from intimate courtyards to spacious theaters, offer showcases for music that ranges from samba to sacred. There’s a physicality to life in Brazil, and an overt intimacy between couples. They kiss while waiting in line for concerts and to celebrate soccer victories. They hold hands as they cross busy thoroughfares. They intertwine on the dance floor. In every place we visited, the dim lights made their perspiring bodies glow as they swayed to the rhythms of live music. Even at instrumental performances, audiences know the words to the melodies, enthusiastically singing the lyrics of every song. Bright colors, crowded places, bodies in motion: The images were riveting, and I wanted to capture as many as possible.

The crowd at Circo Voador in Lapa in early July for a performance by popular bandolinist Hamilton de Holanda. The concert venue is next to the famous arches of Lapa.

KELLY MCCABE, YOGA INSTRUCTOR INVOLVEMENT I began practicing yoga in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2005. HOW HAS IT HELPED YOU? Yoga has helped me in ways I’ve never imagined it could. When I began practicing, I was suffocating from depression and socially hindered by low self-esteem. I felt like I was an island walking around while the world, and my life, was passing me by. FAVORITE YOGA POSITION There’s no easy answer to this question. It really depends on circumstances such as what I did the day before, my energetic state, life events and so on — there’s a lot to take under consideration. YOUR MANTRA This is a big topic. There’s many different mantras for all different situations. Sometimes “Om” is enough, and other days it can be quite a bit more complicated. MEMORIES Every memory is part of the transformation process to bring us closer to our true essence. I embrace the good times and the difficult times equally — they hold each other in balance.

JOANNA B. OZKAYA, OWNER AND YOGA TEACHER INVOLVEMENT I reluctantly took my first yoga class at the Baycare Palm Harbor Wellness Center with my longtime childhood friend my first summer back home from college in 2000. I immediately fell in love with how yoga made me feel. However, it wasn’t until I had graduated from law school and took on my first job that I started to practice yoga more regularly. I joined my first teacher training in 2009 and completed my advanced training in the spring of 2012 just before we opened Nava Yoga Studio in the fall that year. HOW HAS IT HELPED YOU? Yoga has grounded me and given me perspective about what truly matters in life. It has provided me with strength, flexibility and resilience in both mind and body. But most of all, very simply put, it makes me happy. FAVORITE YOGA POSITION The one that is causing me the most difficulty that day. Perspective is everything. YOUR MANTRA I have a few mantras depending on what I may need at that moment. Here are a couple: the first (“Breathe: Everything is exactly as is should be.”) is to inspire peace within; the second (“Do it now: Your future self will thank you.”) I use as motivational tool. MEMORIES One powerful memory, which has afforded me so many more amazing memories, friends and a sense of community, was the moment we opened Nava Yoga Studio. I saw a small dream turn into a huge reality. Another fun memory is the day I had an 88-year-old lady who required a chair to do yoga and a 20-year-old ballerina come into one of my classes. I thought, “How could I possibly accomplish teaching a class suitable for both of these students?” Somehow the three of us had a blast. We all laughed a lot and made it work. People are truly amazing when brought together under the collective idea of self-improvement. When we create more joy and peace within, we bring more joy and peace to others.

WENDY S. LESTER, OWNER AND TEACHER INVOLVEMENT Started around 2000. I initially started to become more flexible. HOW HAS IT HELPED YOU? Yoga has brought overall peace and happiness to my life. I make better decisions. It has improved my relationships. It helps life make sense. HOW HAS IT HELPED YOU? Hopefully by teaching and sharing yoga with others, it has changed their life like it has mine. FAVORITE YOGA POSITION Corpse pose, because initially it was the pose I liked least of all. It can be difficult to still the body and calm the mind, trying to stay in the present moment. I have grown to love it and respect it. YOUR MANTRA Enjoy the present moment. MEMORIES The feeling I had after taking my first yoga philosophy class and realized this is what my life was missing. At that moment is when my yoga practice changed entirely because I realized there was so much more to the practice than just the postures.

TAMPA

YE MYSTIC KREWE CORONATION BALL More than 1,000 guests attended the 102nd Coronation in the Tampa Convention Center for the February enthronement of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla King CII James Von Thron and Queen Anne Kelley. The krewe applauded Jim Ferman, Henry Ennis and Frank Cooper for 50year memberships and chased an interloper off the throne: Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, who confessed he’d “rather be king than governor.” 1. Kelley, center, and her maids, from left: Anne Cappello, Paige Goodwin, Brooke Farrior, Lande Dowell, Hillary Hahmann and Cameron Hill. 2. Von Thron and Kelley. 3. Courtier Andrew Jennewein and king’s page Will Jennewein may be the first brothers to serve those roles at the same time. 4. Von Thron, center, and his courtiers, from left: Alexander Romano, Andrew Jennewein, Jack Compton II, J.H. Williams IV, Robert Edmondson and Guy King IV.

ALL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHARITY BALL

8 7

Think Paris, and you often think of lights and love, so the theme for January’s Charity Ball, presented by the All Children’s Hospital Guild Evening Branch, was appropriate: “Amour au Clair de Lune,” or “Love Under the Moonlight.” Guests danced to the music of Southtown Fever, dined from a French menu and relaxed in a French market atmosphere. The black-tie fundraiser was a sellout at about 350 guests.

MATTERS OF TASTE This starfish most decidedly has its origins in the sea, but it takes its form from salts that many chefs now use as flavor enhancements. In the June issue of Bay, which focuses on food and drink, you’ll learn more about culinary trends in the Tampa Bay area. Beverage artists are making a splash, too, through craft beers, distilled spirits and savory infusions of their own. Salt varieties, clockwise from top: habanero, Himalaya, ghost pepper, Murray River and lime.
