EDITOR’S LETTER
he festive lights have all been switched on, the adverts on the television are all geared towards it as are the songs on the radio, yes there really is no escaping it, Christmas is officially here. So aside from the wrapping, writing of Christmas cards and obligatory drinking of copious amounts of mulled wine, there is a lot to be said for this time of year. I’m sure we are all guilty of getting wrapped up in the commercialisation and retail side of the holidays but without the excitement and rushing around, the bleak days and dark mornings and evenings could get rather tedious. There is also the chance to see friends and loved ones whom we don’t always make time for in our hectic everyday lives, these are all the things I try and take away from Christmas anyway. Of course those less fortunate than ourselves should be spared a thought too but it is at some of the wonderful community events geared around Christmas that help to raise awareness and money for some great local causes and bring joy to many members of the community who are often on their own at Christmas. The wonderful lights switch ons for example, supporting local businesses and seeing all areas of the community coming together to celebrate is wonderful. Carol concerts and church services provide uplifting and heart warming opportunities to worship together and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. And of course you can’t deny the joy in children’s faces at this time of year as they await a visit from Father Christmas with their gifts. For all its trappings, Christmas does have its place, so even if you’re not keen, try and focus on the good points rather than the negatives and hit the new year head on with a positive attitude. To all our readers may we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the team here at Stone and Eccleshall Life.

charge for parking on Sundays on council run car parks across the borough. The council is hoping the move will encourage more people to shop in the town centre therefore boosting trade for local businesses over the festive season. Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration, Councillor Frances Beatty, said: “We’ve got it all for visitors to the area this Christmas. Whether they are shopping for their gifts, festive food and drink, or going for a seasonal lunch, they can do so and not have to pay to park on these two afternoons. She also added that she hoped the move would provide a timely boost for retailers and business in the town. “Along with the Town Centre Partnership, we work to encourage more people to visit our town, and days like these help benefit both shoppers and local business owners. Most borough council run car parks offer cash free parking throughout the year so visitors can pay for their parking using their mobile phones, and top it up without having to return to their cars.

prove popular in Yarnfield
taffordshire house buyers are flocking to Green Acres to find out more about the quality properties that Bovis Homes are building at this attractive new Yarnfield development. With more than a quarter of the homes sold already since Green Acres opened its doors in the summer, it is proving a busy time for sales advisor Amanda Humphreyson. Amanda reports that a wide variety of buyers are choosing to set up home at Green Acres to take advantage of the many benefits of living at this lovely location. “From first time buyers to growing families moving up the property ladder to downsizers, we’ve got something for just about everyone at Green Acres, said Amanda. “The location sells itself, but when purchasers take a tour of our show home, see the quality that Bovis Homes offer and then learn about just what comes included in the price of the property, the benefits really start stacking up. Bovis Homes’ all-inclusive specification means that buyers can move in and start living straight away, enjoying features such as a kitchen with integrated appliances and bedroom with ensuite and built-in wardrobes. “Visitors always seem surprised to learn just what’s included in the price here, features that many other builders would only offer as ‘extras’, said Amanda. “Something that’s also really attracting attention at Green Acres are the lovely large gardens which are really impressing visitors. To help buyers in securing their new home at Green Acres, there are a variety of purchase assistance schemes available. For instance,
there’s Help to Buy, which has seen thousands of buyers get on or move up the ladder as a Government equity loan of 20% of the price means the buyer needs just a 5% deposit and 75% mortgage. Then there’s Home Exchange, where Bovis Homes could buy your old house and help take some of the stress, cost and time out of moving. “If you’ve never thought about a new-build home, or don’t think you can afford to make a move, I would always encourage people to at least come and have a look and talk about their options, said Amanda. “There are some fantastic purchase assistance schemes out there for new homes which aren’t available with second homes. “And there are so many advantages to buying brand new. For a start, it really will mark a fresh start as you move into a cosy, bright new place, untouched by previous owners where you can really make your mark! “You’ll also avoid those DIY and repair jobs you inevitably need in an older home, and because they use the latest materials and technologies, new homes are a ‘green’ choice and with their overall improved heat insulation, you could save hundreds on energy bills! To find out more, phone the team on 07584555341, pay a visit to the sales office between Thursday and Monday (10am-5pm) or go to www.bovishomes.co.uk December 2014/January 2015 11

he Christmas lights were officially switched on in the town centre on Monday 1st December by Father Christmas, signalling the official start of Eccleshall’s countdown to Christmas. The town was a hive of activity as many of the businesses and shop keepers joined in with the special festive late night shopping evening which also took place that night. Revellers turned out in their droves to see Santa arrive in his sleigh at the lych gate of Holy Triny Church at 4pm where he then did the honours of switching on the Christmas lights and those of the 62 small Christmas trees erected the previous day. Still plenty to come this festive season however; on Wednesday 3rd December the Eccleshall Trust coach will take dozens of senior citizens to the North Staffs Hotel in Stoke for their Christmas lunch. Musicians and singers are invited to perform at a Christmas Acoustic Night event at the Royal Oak in High street, on Thursday 4th December. Admission is free along with a mince pie, there will also be a raffle in aid of the Air Ambulance. A Charity Night is set to take place at the gallery, Number 12 High Street, on Saturday 6th December between 10am and 5pm. There will be music in the day along with nibbles and drinks. Money raised from 10% of all items sold at the gallery will go to Shape Arts, a charity which
supports disabled people to help them rehabilitate through art. Also on Saturday, the Eccleshall Singers will be ‘In Concert’ at the Methodist Church starting at 7.30pm. Admission is ÂŁ6 including light refreshments. On Monday 8th December starting at 6.30pm, the Eccleshall and Stone District Guides hold their Christmas service at the Holy Trinity Church. A festive lunchtime concert will take place in the parish room of the Holy Trinity Church on Thursday 11th December starting at 12.30pm with simple lunch and entertainment, admission is ÂŁ5. On Sunday 21st December, the United Carol Service takes place at the Holy Trinity Church when the town churches come together for a joint service starting at 6.30pm. Panto stars help light up town for christmas
anto stars from Stafford Gatehouse Theatre were on hand to help Stone celebrate the start of the festive season with the annual Christmas lights switch on evening which took place on Thursday 20th November. The town was packed to the rafters with revellers who came out to enjoy the entertainment in the town centre ahead of the big switch on of the new lights, supplied and installed by Stone Town Council, which were turned on by Mayor Cathy Collier who was joined by Father Christmas and cast members from the panto running at the local theatre this year. As well as performances from singer Matt Blake and Stone Schools Combined Choir, there was an array of stalls lining the High Street selling everything from festive crafts and gifts, charity stalls and games raising money for worthy causes, to fairground rides and delicious warming refreshments which locals and visitors alike enjoyed. A wonderful night was had by all who went along to enjoy the start of Stone’s festive celebrations. December 2014/January 2015 15

he local community in Stone, is better protected after the installation of a new Public Access Defibrillator (AED) earlier in the year. The AED is now installed on the wall of The Co-Operative in the Stone High Street. It’s available for the public to use 24 hours a day, seven days a week, once the code has been received from a West Midlands Ambulance Service Call handler. The AED for Stone High Street has been purchased and installed with locally raised funds from an event held in memory of Mark Symonds; called ‘Party for Life’ which was held at the Mill in Stone. Other donations have come from proceeds from the collection at Dr Farnham’s funeral, kindly donated by Mrs Joyce Farnham; and donations from the Stone Lions and R M P Care, Stone. Victoria Tufail, West Midlands Ambulance Service Community Response Manager said: “It is great news that a new defibrillator has been installed in Stone. taffordshire Young Farmers held their County AGM in the Ingestre Suite at the County Showground in Stafford recently. During the evening many members collected silverware and certificates for their outstanding achievements during the past year including several prestigious awards for Eccleshall Young Farmers Club and some of its members who cleaned up in the trophy department. Lisa Hawkins, County Chairman, gave her report on the activities within the Federation during 2013/2014. Lisa reported that her year had been the fastest and most enjoyable of her life. She outlined the competitions and many events during her year, which included being a part of the WFU Land Army Tribute unveiling in the presence of the Countess of Wessex and coming 4th in the Ladies National Tug of War finals. Lisa said: “Having spent 12 months with the fantastic members across Staffordshire who are so very skilled, outgoing, enthusiastic and talented, I feel very proud of our organisation. Frank Hammond was elected as County President. He is a very active volunteer in the federation and regularly helps out at the various social events. Frank works as a Transport Coordinator for Culina. David Heminsley was elected the Senior Deputy President, also for his first year. David is a very active volunteer in the Federation, and currently updates the County Website, leads in all things ‘health and safety’ and regularly helps with the upkeep and maintenance at the County Office. David works for JCB as a trainer. Margaret Bennett, the retiring County

President was thanked by all members and presented with gifts from everyone across the County. Lisa spoke of Margaret’s enthusiasm, support and help to the Federation during her time as County President from 2012 – 2014. Margaret thanked everyone for making her so welcome at Clubs, for supporting her during the two years and reminded all members to stick to the motto of YFC which has bought her to this moment ‘you get out, what you put in.’ During the meeting it was also encouraging that the membership for Staffordshire YFC now stands at 605 members aged between 10 and 26 with six of the ten clubs across the County increasing their individual club membership. The guest speaker for the evening was Mr Roger Hailwood, a volunteer guide from the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas. He gave a great insight into the work of the NMA and explained how it had started back in 1994 following a National Appeal and then grew to be the wonderful attraction that it is today, set in 155 acres with 44’000 trees and host to so many varied tributes including the most recent, the Women’s Land Army Tribute and the Shot at Dawn, which he explained in more detail. He finished the interesting talk with two moving poems, written by nine year old Jody Johnson. The presentations of awards were then made by Roger Hailwood to various clubs and individuals. Among those picking up awards on the night was Eccleshall’s Becky Stubbs who claimed the evening’s most coveted prize of ‘Most Outstanding Chairman’ along with being jointly presented with the Mr and Mrs W.A. Eccleshall also claiming the Overall Competitions Cup presented to them for the most points for the competitions that have been held in the last 12 months; Junior Stockjudging Cup; Intermediate Stockjudging Cup where they were joint winners with Waterhouses, The Senior Stockjudging Cup and the overall Stockjudging Cup. emembrance Day, the 11th hour of the eleventh day of the 11th month, usually commemorated on Remembrance Sunday, the closest day to the 11th, fell on Sunday 9th November this year. Poignant services and the tradition of observing a two minutes silence took place all over the country in order to pay tribute to all those who have lost their lives in conflict both past and present. Locally, Remembrance services, parades, the laying of poppy wreaths and observing two minutes silence took place on Sunday 9th and on 11th November, Armistice Day. Pictured are members of the community on Remembrance Day ahead of the parade to Holy Trinity Church in Eccleshall and at a moving service held in Stone’s Granville Square at the war memorial where hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects to the fallen who have died serving their country. Marking 100 years of the start of the First World War made this year’s Remembrance commemorations even more poignant.

talent shines through in first slalom competition
S
tafford and Stone Canoe Club’s youngest and newest group of paddlers competed at their first Canoe Slalom event at Stone on the weekend of 18th and 19th October. The group of 12 young paddlers, aged between 10 and 12,competed in the Stone Division 3-4 Slalom despite having only been canoeing at the club since May. They attend weekly training sessions on the River Trent with Club Competition Coach Andy Neave leading the coaching team. At the slalom event the paddlers competed in the entry level Division 4 race with paddlers of all ages attending from a wide variety of other canoe clubs. Competing at your first slalom can be quite daunting but the Stafford and Stone group rose to the challenge and all completed the courses. Star performance of the weekend came from Tyler Dickinson who won the Women’s Kayak race on the Sunday. Other top performances came from
22 December 2014/January 2015
Bex Harratt who took second place on Saturday in the Women’s Kayak, with Dhanuja Perera also second and Harvey Groves third in the Saturday Men’s Kayak competition. All four gained promotion to Division 3 where they will now face tougher competition. They do however have plenty of time to prepare as the 2014 season draws to a close and their next canoe slalom competition will now be in 2015. In the mean time members of the public interested in the club or wishing to support it can go along to its Christmas Fayre taking place on Saturday 6th December from 10am to 3pm at Stafford and Stone Canoe Club at Westbridge Park, Stone where there will be crafts, cakes, cards decorations refreshments and lots of other festive fun to get you in the Christmas spirit. Everyone welcome. Photo courtesy of Tyler Dickinson.

embers of the Stone Outward Division Rangers supported crews at the Stone Food and Drink Festival by giving out leaflets and talking to visitors about fire safety in the home. Firefighters demonstrated the risks posed by cooking with chip pans which was when the teenagers attended. A total of 53 referrals were taken for free Home Fire Risk Checks during the three-day celebration. Carmel Warren, Prevention manager for the west of the county, said: “The Stone Food and Drink Festival is a highlight of the calendar in Staffordshire and attracts people from all over the county as well as further afield so it was a great opportunity to speak to people about safety in the home and on the roads. “The chip pan demonstrations really caught the attention of visitors and we were delighted with the help provided by members of the Stone Outward Division Rangers, who gave up their spare time to support the safety drive. “The more volunteers that can help us spread our message and highlight the possible risks that residents can face the better. It was the second event that the young people helped us with 24 December 2014/January 2015
recently with members of the group also supporting our first ever Community Wellbeing Day. Their work could have life changing, and potentially life-saving, effects. Unit Leader Kathryn Clark added: “Working alongside the fire and rescue service has been an excellent experience for the girls and they are really looking forward to building upon the partnership. They are incredibly passionate about spreading the Service’s safety messages and their focus at the festival was to educate the whole family, talking to both adults and children. “The girls are working towards their Community Action Octant as part of the Girl Guiding ‘Look Wider Programme’ so it’s great for them to be involved in events such as this which can really make a difference to people’s lives. The unit is aimed at girls and young women aged 14 to 25. It meets at 5th Stone Scout Hut, Common Lane, twice a month, from 7.30pm to 9pm, on Friday evenings. For more information call Unit Leader Kathryn Clark on tel. 01785 229553 or tel. 07794639454. Couple clock up 8,000 miles in 10 years visiting festival
A
s the Stone Food and Drink Festival marked its 10th birthday this autumn, there were probably plenty of visitors who could lay claim to having attended each and every event in its 10 year history. However, it’s unlikely that anyone has clocked up 8,000 miles in the course of travelling to the event over the past decade - like Aberdeen based Graeme and Karen Slesser. The couple make the annual 800 mile round trip to stay with friends Lynne and Sandy Daun, who live in Stone, ensuring their visit falls on the first weekend of October each year to coincide with what has become Staffordshire’s biggest gastronomic gathering. 2014 was no different, with the couple choosing to fly back into Manchester following their recent holiday to Italy, rather than heading straight back to Aberdeen, in order to be in town for the three-day festivities. As to why they return for the festival every year, Graeme said: “There are a few reasons; the range of producers and the quality of the produce, we enjoy sampling the local beers as we listen to the live music each afternoon. Everyone is so friendly and the atmosphere of the festival is fantastic. We normally visit Stone about three
times a year to visit our friends and the food festival is a permanent fixture in the calendar! And the Slessers are not alone in travelling to attend the event, as Festival Chairman Richard Stevens explained: “We’ve always attracted exhibitors from far and wide but, since we started selling advance tickets online three years ago we’ve found ourselves posting tickets to visitors from all over the country. It really seems that Stone is being put on the ‘foodie’ map, which has always been one of our main goals. Graeme and Karen’s story is particularly lovely – not least because they travel so far and have come to each and every event since the festival started – and we hope to see them back in town for many more festivals yet! If you know of someone who’s travelled as many miles as Graeme and Karen over the years to visit the Stone Food & Drink Festival, the committee would love to hear from you – please email info@stonefooddrink.org.uk. The 2015 Stone Food and Drink Festival will take place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th October – for more details, visit www.stonefooddrink.org.uk Pictured from left to right is Lynne Daun, Sandy Daun, Karen Slesser and Graeme Slesser. Christmas cookery
The winter months are a great time of year to enjoy your food with nothing more satisfying than a warm hearty meal to comfort you when the winter chill starts to bite.
So why not try your hand at a bit of festive baking. It needn’t be time-consuming either as once everything is weighed out, most things take only minutes to prepare and cook and keep really well too. The aroma of some glorious baking coming from the kitchen will really add some festive cheer to your home this Christmas, and what is more traditional than a batch of scrumptious mince pies.
Mince Pies
Ingredients 350g/12oz high quality mincemeat, preferably homemade 200g/7oz plain flour, sifted 40g/11â „2oz golden caster sugar 75g/23â „4oz ground almonds 125g/41â „2oz unsalted butter, diced 1 large free-range egg, beaten milk, to glaze
Method 1. Lightly butter a 12-hole pie tin. Tip the mincemeat into a bowl and stir so that the liquid is evenly distributed. 2. Place the flour, sugar, almonds and butter in a food processor and process briefly until resembling breadcrumbs, then slowly add the egg

through the feeder tube. (Or rub the butter into the dry ingredients by hand and stir in the egg.) 3. Bring the mixture together with your hands, wrap in clingfilm and chill for an hour or so. Thinly roll out the pastry on a floured surface. Cut out 12 circles with a fluted pastry cutter, large enough to fill the base of the prepared tin. Press gently into each hole, then fill with the mincemeat. 4. Cut out another 12 slightly smaller discs and use to cover the mincemeat. Press the edges together to seal. Make a small slit in the top of each, then brush lightly with milk. Chill for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. 5. Bake the pies for 20 Ma minutes until golden Prep kes: 12 p ie a brown. Remove to a wire 30 m ration t s ime: inute rack and serve warm. Cook s to 1 ho u 10 to ing time r : 30 m inute s

t a recent tasting there was much interest in a new arrival to the whisky table. Presented in a striking azure blue bottle with a copper top the all new Haig Club had really captured the visitor’s imagination. A large dark poster featuring David Beckham also added to the theatre - but what was all the fuss about. A number of people who confessed they did not like or drink whisky wanted to try the new spirit whilst those more familiar with the world of malts were just curious. Those who did not like whisky were surprised, describing it as very different, smooth and easy to drink whilst many of the connoisseurs remarked on the lack of complexity in flavour. Haig Club is described as a single grain whisky and the main question to come out of the tasting was. ‘What’s the difference between a single grain and single malt?’ In Scotland malt whisky has to be made with 100% malted barley and produced in a pot still. These are the curiously shaped copper vessels that
30 December 2014/January 2015
make distilleries such intriguing places to visit. Grain whisky, on the other hand, is made with a combination of grains and is produced in an industrial scale continuous process. The whisky produced is of a higher alcohol content but much lighter in taste. As a result of this and the larger volumes produced, grain whisky is principally used as the main constituent in blended whisky. Occasionally grain whisky is released on its own, as in the case of Haig Club, and where this whisky comes from a single distillery it is known as a single grain whisky. The production figures from a grain whisky distillery can be impressive. The Cameronbridge Distillery in Fife where Haig Club is produced can produce 95 million litres of whisky per year! Compare that to the annual production capacity at Glenfiddich, a mere 14 million litres, and the economic case for Haig Club becomes very clear. No wonder David Beckham and his business partner Simon Fuller have joined forces with drinks giant Diageo to score a real winner!

Second offering and dvd from local author
E
arlier this year local author, Jeff Kent, from Cotes Heath published Staffordshire’s 1,000-Foot Peaks, the first-ever printed guide to the 65 hills of the county which reach the magic mini-mountain four-figure height. And now, just in time for Christmas, Jeff has done it again with his latest offering, Peak Pictures, the visual companion to Staffordshire’s 1,000-Foot Peaks Jeff’s guide to the highest local hills. This unique record of unusual scenes has been photographed by the author and his companions in the southern Pennines between 2012 and 2014. Jeff’s conquest of the peaks led him to undertake a series of circular walks often well off the beaten track, which frequently took him into landscapes unfamiliar to most visitors to the area and offered numerous excellent photographic opportunities. Peak Pictures presents the author’s 137 favourite photographs
from well over a thousand taken during his project. The book contains a fascinating variety of images, including exclusive shots of hills, rocks, cliffs, moorlands, heaths, rivers, valleys, reservoirs, pools, woods, caves, animals, villages, buildings, bridges, quarries, follies and strange stiles in differing weather conditions over the four seasons of the year. For alternative views of the Staffordshire Highlands and beyond, which suggest endless ideas for days out with a difference, Peak Pictures is indispensable. And not content with two books Jeff has also been involved in the production of a DVD on a very different topic. Focussing less on our local countryside and more on urban landscapes and city life, Pictures From The Potteries is a DVD featuring the highlights of 131 cine movies shot mainly in and around Stoke on Trent from 1962. This entirely original footage of a vanished world includes fascinating sequences of life in the city and features highlights such as Stoke City’s epic 1972 Football League Cup Wembley triumph to local jubilee celebrations, royal visits among the numerous interesting characters caught on film. Both Peak Pictures, and Pictures From The Potteries DVD produced by 63 year old Jeff are available in most bookstores in Staffordshire, and through Amazon, although readers of Stone and Eccleshall Life can contact the author directly via email at witan@mail.com or over the phone on Tel 01782 791673 to obtain signed copies. celebrate new year with a diff
A
s Tim Cockin drove back from Allendale, Northumberland, at 2.00am on New Year’s Day 2004, after seeing the Allendale tar barrel folk custom, which attracts thousands from across the North East of England, he wondered if he could start something similar in his home village of Barlaston. So began
34 December 2014/January 2015
the Barlaston Wassail, a night walk round the village, house-calling to welcome in the New Year. It has a twist, though. The walkers carry twelve banners depicting Anglo-Saxons pertinent to the area, stop, and read a verse to each one on the way. In the tradition of great folk customs (the Padstow Obby Oss and Abbots Bromley Horn Dance) there’s a much-loved central character the eponymous Beornwulf who gives his name to Barlaston. Cloaked in black wearing a helmet and carrying a ‘shield’ and ‘staff’ he arises from the ‘dead’ at the Children’s Wassail at the tree-on-thevillage-green at 5.30pm: launches the Walk round the village from Orchard Place shopping parade at 9.30pm; and ‘dies’ as the Walk arrives in front of the Duke of York Inn, Longton Road, Barlaston at 11.30pm. When the Upper House Hotel and Restaurant was built in 1851 a 7th Century grave was found (the grave goods went to the British Museum). This grave could have been Beornwulf’s.

The evening concludes with a parade and a ‘dance’ round the village tree at midnight singing Auld Lang Syne. The Children’s Wassail at 5.30pm contains a fun ‘Horrible Histories’ sketch using many of the models and pyrotechnics in the later parade and is free. Of the children’s event, Averil Shepherd of Calendar Customs website, said: “It’s nice to have something to appeal to young families as they’re often a bit left out at New Year but this Wassail just seems to be going from strength to strength.â€? Wassail means ‘Good health’ in Anglo-Saxon. So the main raffle prize is the Wassail Tankard, which is inscribed with a verse about the year in the village and world news, but is becoming just as famous itself. This year organisers are very grateful to have funding from Staffordshire County Council’s Local Community Fund, and ask just a modest entrance fee of ÂŁ3 per person with raffle tickets for sale for ÂŁ1 per strip. For further details of the event contact Tim Cockin on Tel. 01782 372067 or Janet Taylor Tel.
01782 372727. Proceeds from the Wassail go to Riding For The Disabled North Staffordshire Branch. If you are looking to welcome in the new year, in a different, unique way this is the event for you!

Start the new year as you mean to go on
P
eople everywhere make resolutions for the New Year and people everywhere have trouble sticking to them. Most people’s resolutions for 2015 will probably be one on the list of the top ten we have compiled here.
1. Stop Smoking 2. Get into a Habit of being Fit 3. Lose Weight - the Battle of the Bulge 4. Enjoy Life More. 5. Quit Drinking 6. Organise Yourself - this is one of the keys to reaching your goals 7. Learn Something New 8. Get out of Debt 9. Spend More Time With Family
10. Help People.
But no matter what you've done or failed to accomplish in the past, that was then and this is now and with a positive outlook and a bit of determination any of the above resolutions can be stuck to. One tip for succeeding with your health and lifestyle goals is to write down a list of your main aims and goals, try and make them realistic though and you will have more chance of succeeding. Then make a list of all the little steps you have to take to reach them. Prioritise those steps and then attempt to do something every day to take yourself along the steps towards your goal. So good luck and happy new year.

LOOK GOOD & FEEL GREAT THIS CHRISTMAS & ENJOY A HEALTHY START TO THE NEW YEAR! How can we survive Christmas and New Year whilst still enjoying ourselves, without putting on fat and still looking and feeling great?
It really frustrates me that we work so hard to get in shape all year, then Christmas arrives and we let all that hard work go to waste, or should I say waist? Starting back in January with our New Year health, fitness and wellbeing resolutions is then so much harder than it has to be!
Christmas is a time to relax, recharge and celebrate. Don’t obsess over food and your weight but don’t take a vacation from exercise and healthy living either. Remember it is up to you to treat your body with respect - be assertive and strong. Feed your body healthy whole foods and keep active. The average person in the UK will gain half a stone over Christmas (British Diatetic Association). Bearing this in mind, maintaining your new improved body fat percentage and leaner muscle content through the Christmas period is like losing 7lbs of body fat in the New Year and a hell of a lot easier to do.
So take action NOW. Put your own wellbeing first and look and feel great this Christmas, and maintain this into the New Year, whilst still enjoying yourself.

Savvy businesswoman utilises her love of gardening
A
locally based business woman is celebrating after winning recognition for her new venture within a month of launching her handmade soap and beauty products online. Vicki Evans, of Walk Mill near Eccleshall, is an experienced management coach who has combined her coaching experience with her love of gardening to launch Walk Mill Botanics - a unique range of handmade soaps, beauty balms, gift sets, room sprays and bath products that come complete with hidden reflective and relaxation exercises. All the soaps are bursting with natural ingredients, are SLS and paraben free, and come wrapped in recycled cloth that is embedded with flower seeds. Vicki launched her website www.walkmillbotanics.co.uk back in September and was delighted to be awarded the Jacqueline Gold #WOW award shortly afterwards – an accolade that hundreds of businesses across the country vie for. The award, which stands for Women on Wednesday, is given by successful entrepreneur and Ann Summers Chief Executive Jacqueline Gold in recognition of businesses that she believes ‘are interesting, have strong brand values and have potential to grow and succeed in their industry’. The businesses must demonstrate quality products, well designed websites and entrepreneurs who appear to have a good business sense and who have thought about what the consumer wants and how to deliver it. The award means that Walk Mill Botanics can display the accolade on its website and has benefited from exposure to an audience of almost 45,000 people through Jacqueline Gold’s twitter presence. The award comes after a busy few months which has seen Vicki feature in the national Country Living Magazine as well as raising awareness of her brand at the Great Yorkshire Show, Eccleshall Show and many more. Vicki commented: “I’m absolutely thrilled to 40 December 2014/January 2015
receive the award and to have an opportunity to spread the word about my products, which I’m incredibly proud of. We’ve put a lot of work into making sure not only that our products are natural and smell gorgeous, but also we have a truly unique and ambitious brand that offers something different. It’s great to be recognised for that aspect of the vision, as well as receiving lots of great feedback from customers who are using the products. In addition to making the soaps, bath bombs, room sprays, gift boxes and beauty balms available online at www.walkmillbotanics.co.uk the range is also available through a small number of local outlets in Staffordshire and Shropshire. Make home security top of your lis ith Christmas now just weeks away, many people are already filling their homes with expensive gifts for loved ones, making this a tempting time for domestic burglars. With this in mind people are being urged to protect their valuables, including any Christmas gift purchases, from theft. Computers, cash, electrical goods and jewellery are among the most commonly stolen items in domestic burglaries and, as a result of our love for gadgets, the average cost of a burglary has risen by 40% over the last three years. With the latest game consoles, phones or tablets at the top of many Christmas wish lists, homes across the UK provide rich pickings for burglars at this time of year. However, it is not just festive purchases that

David Herbert from Yale, the main sponsor of National Home Security month, commented: “Home security is more important than ever at this time of year and there are a number of ways you can protect your home from falling prey to opportunistic criminals. “To protect smaller valuable items and reduce the risk of fraud, use a home safe. This can be used for items such as jewellery, small electronic gadgets, important documents and gift receipts, but make sure you bolt it securely to a wall or floor so it can’t be stolen. “Alarms also offer an effective visual deterrent. Fundraising and Remembrance hroughout the school term pupils at St Dominic’s Priory School in Stone have been involved in raising money for various charities. Staff and classmates gathered together in order to raise money for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice by holding a coffee afternoon complete with cake sale, homemade lemonade, tea and coffee. The ‘St Dominic’s Priory School Bake Off’ competition also took place which was hotly contested, with a
great many fabulous creations from both Senior and Prep pupils entered. The afternoon was a huge success, with everyone paying ÂŁ1 to enter. St Dominic’s Priory School managed to raise ÂŁ170 on the door for the Dougie Mac ‘Bring a Pound Day.’ Volunteers from the hospice and Signal 1 radio arrived part way through the event on a big red bus, dressed as superheroes to collect the money. The final total for Macmillan Cancer Care was ÂŁ305.30. A huge thank you was extended to everyone who supported the event. Then on Remembrance Day, Sunday 9th November, the Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl of the school laid a wreath at the Stone Remembrance Sunday Parade on behalf of St Dominic’s. A memorable Remembrance Assembly was held the following morning in order to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War. Pupils created a beautiful display of poppies they had made in their Art lessons the previous week. Staff members and students also talked about their own family connections with the First and Second World Wars. It was interesting and moving to hear staff and pupils talk about their personal insights and the pupils all agreed that they understood a little more about the huge impact The Great War and Second World War had on everyone’s families.

INVESTMENT MATTERS
The Only Way Is Up?
O
n 5 March 2009, the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) lowered interest rates to an historic low of 0.5%. A year earlier interest rates were over 5%. During the following 5 years, the Bank of England has kept interest rates at 0.5%. If interest rates had gone any lower, it could have created problems with negative interest rates in certain parts of the money market and, as the previous Bank Governor remarked, probably would make little difference elsewhere as decisions rarely hang on a 0.25% margin. Since the 2007/08 financial crisis, the UK economy has undergone economic recovery and grew 3.2% on a 12 month basis ending the second quarter 2014. Unemployment has fallen also. However, inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, is well below the Bank of England’s 2% target and is expected to remain low for the immediate future. The Bank of England is facing an interest rate problem. When should the Bank raise interest rates? After such a prolonged period of low rates, the markets are starting to build in assumptions about future rate rises; something which the Bank is worried will deter businesses from making fresh capital investment and individuals from buying new homes. According to the Bank’s research, interest rates on 70% of loans to households and more than 50% of loans to businesses are linked to the Bank of England base rate. The Bank of England offers “forward guidance” as a tool to inform the market what factors are in the Bank’s thoughts with regards to inflation and, ultimately, interest rates, which remains the main tool of controlling inflation. The Bank has stated that “the legacy of the financial crisis and persistence of economic headwinds mean that interest rates may need to remain at low levels for some time to come and it is likely that the next peak in interest rates will be below the 5% level, set on average, by the Bank of England prior to the crisis”. However, with the 52 December 2014/January 2015
UK economy recovering, interest rates, at some point, will start to rise. Although the Bank of England is independent, it is unlikely to raise interest rates too close to the May 2015 General Election, however, the market has initially pencilled in an increase somewhere in the 1st quarter of 2015. Inflation is also currently below the Bank of England’s target. The Bank expects inflation to remain below target for some time to come, therefore, there is arguably less need to raise interest rates, particularly taking into account the economic troubles in the Eurozone and the economic slowdown in China, and their economic impact on the UK. Interest rates may continue to remain at 0.5% for a little while longer, but when interest rates do rise, they should rise slowly and remain below historic levels. Low interest rates mean cash on deposit is losing value, even before tax is considered. For alternatives, please talk to us. GRINDEYS COMMUNITY

brings the fundraising total to £8,500
G
rindeys Community, the fundraising arm of Grindeys Solicitors, is delighted to announce that their charity fashion show and shopping extravaganza, held at the Sixth Form College in Stoke, was a huge success and raised a total of £2,400 for its nominated charities the Douglas Macmillan Hospice and the Peter Pan Nursery. This will be added to their overall fundraising total this charity year, which runs from 1st March to 28th February, and the total now stands at £8,500. Ladies who attended the event were treated to a fashion show and over 40 different stalls which were selling an array of items ranging from jewellery to beer gift sets. To boost the fundraising total there was also wine, cake and hot samosas on sale throughout the night. To enhance the community spirit of the evening students from Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College got involved and dance students opened the fashion show with a street dance whilst the media students captured the event on film. The idea of their involvement is to
complement their academic studies with real work experience. Grindeys Community, the group which organised the event, is a non profit making company of Grindeys Solicitors which was formed specifically to fundraise for local charities. Julie Draper Head of Marketing commented, “There is a huge appetite at Grindeys Solicitors to support the community and local charities. Grindeys Community was formed to focus and channel that raw and generous enthusiasm and since March 2012 the team have raised over £20,000 for local charities.” Dougie Mac fundraising manager Trevor Fudger said, “We would like to thank the team at Grindeys for their continued support and fantastic fundraising efforts. The Hospice costs over eleven million per year to run and so every penny counts.”

tafford Coastal Cruising Club have landed a star studded guest list for their forthcoming season of evenings this new year. Suitably kicking off proceedings is Tracey Edwards MBE who skippered the yacht ‘Maiden’. Crossing the finish line of the Whitbread Round the World Race and sailing into the record books, she carried the first all-female crew to sail around the world. Tracy Edwards had risked everything to get her and the team to the start line. Maiden won two legs, and came second in her class – the best result for a British Whitbread boat in the 35 year history of the event. Tracy was awarded an MBE and became the first woman in its 32 year history to be awarded the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy. Tracy is now deeply involved twenty five years after the event in raising funds to bring this iconic boat from South Africa back to England. A refit, and work to bring her back to its original condition using youngsters from ‘The Princes Trust’ who will then sail the boat back. The Cruising Club have booked the ‘Gatehouse Theatre’ Stafford for this talk in April 2015 which is open to the public. Tickets are obtained direct from the Gatehouse for ÂŁ12.50. Later in the year another famous sailor is to grace the Gatehouse, The very popular Tom Cunliffe sailor, classic boat enthusiast, author – and columnist for Yachting Monthly and many other publications, and funny man will speak. Again the club is opening this very entertaining evening to the public and tickets are also direct from the Gatehouse. Stafford Coastal Cruising Club is actively looking to increase its membership. From October to April meetings are held each second and fourth Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm for 8.00pm at the clubhouse of Stafford Boat Club, in Wildwood, Stafford. utomotive supercomputer meets stateof-the-art sports car in the all-new Audi TT, which is available to order in the UK from ÂŁ29,770 OTR. Enveloping its stunning all-digital virtual cockpit and advanced new chassis in a beautiful new body that is unmistakably TT but also distinctly contemporary, the third generation car looks set to incite another quiet revolution in its class. It will even set the agenda in terms of efficiency – despite appropriate performance the new 184PS ultra version will be capable of in excess of 67mpg with CO2 emissions of just 110g/km. Two specification levels – Sport and S line – will initially be offered in the UK for the all-new TT. Both include the Audi virtual cockpit, which is based around a 12.3-inch, high resolution LCD display that completely fills the driver’s instrument binnacle and replaces the traditional analogue dials. Its brilliantly sharp images are courtesy of a powerful Tegra 30 graphics
processor from Nvidia’s Tegra 3 series. At 4.18 metres long, the CoupÊ is almost exactly the same length as its predecessor, though its wheelbase has grown by 37 mm to 2,505 mm, making for especially short overhangs. It is 1,832 mm wide, and has the same height as the previous model at 1,353 mm. As a 2+2 seater, it is a sports car that is suitable for everyday use, with a load area capacity of 305 litres - which can be increased to 712 litres by folding the rear seat backrests forwards. The remarkable blend of performance and economy offered across the TT range is partly attributable to its advanced Audi Space Frame composite construction, which has been carried over and further evolved for the all-new model. On the outside, the range of nine paint colour options for Sport models includes two shades that are new to the Audi range – Tango Red and Nano Grey. The list of available colours for S line versions includes one extra choice – Daytona Grey.

Discovery fans in for a treat
and Rover recently revealed the new Discovery Sport, the world’s most versatile and capable premium compact SUV. The first member of the new Discovery family, Discovery Sport, features 5+2 seating in a footprint no larger than existing 5 seat premium SUVs. Discovery Sport’s progressive new design approach defines the new Discovery family with optimised volume, proportions and stance. Its design leadership combines with engineering integrity to result in a dynamic profile, the ultimate use of interior space and 5+2 seating configurability. “Our challenge has been to combine premium design with exceptional versatility; the two attributes must work in harmony, said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer. “I’m proud to say we’ve achieved that; Discovery Sport’s dynamic design will resonate on an emotional level with consumers, and this vehicle is more versatile than any other premium compact SUV on the market. The vehicle’s spirit of adventure is reflected in Discovery Sport’s interior, which has been designed with customers at its core. It features
high-quality materials and a strong vertical centre console graphic to reflect the premium design of the exterior, while the core Discovery value of versatility is evident everywhere. Storage solutions are integrated into the cabin and up to four 12V power points and six USB charging sockets can be specified for all three rows of seating, allowing multiple electronic devices to be charged simultaneously. A host of innovations have allowed Discovery Sport to introduce the versatility of 5+2 seating into the premium compact SUV class for the first time. An all-new multi-link rear axle not only provides engaging driving dynamics but it also provides ample and flexible cabin space behind the second row. Coupled with supple long-travel suspension, the innovative rear axle also ensures the Discovery Sport is comfortable, refined and rewarding to drive on-road, while retaining the breadth of allterrain capability for which Land Rover is world-renowned. In fact, with approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees respectively, Terrain ResponseÂŽ technology, and the ability to wade to 600mm, Discovery Sport offers class-leading capability in all conditions. The new fiat panda cross
eing able to offer something truly unique in the increasingly competitive SUV segment is no small achievement but in the FIAT Panda Cross that’s exactly what you get – a car like no other! In 2006 SUVs accounted for around seven per cent of the total car market in Europe whereas today they account for approximately 20 per cent, and yet despite the proliferation of models in the past decade the new FIAT Panda Cross remains a truly unique offering by combining the genuine capabilities of a proper off-road vehicle with the efficiency and practicality of a versatile city car. The technological upgrades of the FIAT Panda Cross make it the most capable vehicle in its class by some margin – more so even than the awardwinning FIAT Panda 4X4 on which it is based yet it is a car that could still be chosen purely for its low running costs, day-to-day practicality and general ease and pleasure of use. The aesthetic enhancements not only provide some visual clues to the all-road potential of the FIAT Panda Cross, they also perform the 62 December 2014/January 2015
functional role of protecting its bodywork, lights and mechanical components, both in extreme off road conditions and the rough and tumble of city traffic. No other car can offer such extreme cross functionality, but then FIAT does have more than 30 years of experience in city car innovation: The FIAT Panda was the first to be offered with all-wheel drive in its segment, as well as the first to be powered by diesel, methane and LPG. More recently it pioneered City Brake Control in its segment, a safety feature that is ideally suited to city cars but until that time was reserved for larger luxury vehicles. It’s this reputation for practical innovation that has consistently kept the Panda amongst the best sellers in its class – it currently occupies the second spot in Europe, just behind its stablemate, the FIAT 500. Priced from £15,945 for the TwinAir version and £16,945 for the diesel-powered model. For more information on the FIAT Panda 4X4 or the broader FIAT range visit www.FIAT.co.uk.
GIVE YOUR CAR A SEASONAL MAKEOVER
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is warning motorists about winter weather as part of its national campaign, #wheelsinwinter. As more bad weather is expected, the IAM is offering advice to drivers to ensure their cars are prepared for the cold season.
Here are seven essential checks motorists should carry out: • Ensure your lights are fully working • Check your washer bottle is filled with screen wash • Check the brake fluid reservoir • Check your cars tyre conditions regularly • Anti-freeze should be topped up all year round • Make room for a winter driving kit in your car including a blanket, torch, shovel, and a fully charged mobile phone so you can contact your breakdown service provider or any family/friends if your car breaks down. • Make sure you have last year’s ice scraper and deicer at the ready and ensure they are still effective, or get new ones for this year. Frost can strike overnight; don’t wait till it’s too late.

oyota will launch its all-new Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in Japan on 15th December, before introducing it in the UK and other selected European markets in September 2015. Mirai – the name means future in Japanese – signals the start of a new age of vehicles. It uses hydrogen, an important future energy source, to generate electric power, delivering better environmental performance while giving customers the convenience and driving pleasure they expect from any car. Mirai uses the Toyota Fuel Cell System (TFCS), which brings together fuel cell and hybrid technologies. It includes Toyota’s new, proprietary fuel cell stack and high-pressure hydrogen tanks. The TFCS is more energy efficient than internal combustion engines and emits no CO2 or pollutants when the vehicle is driven. A generous cruising range and a hydrogen refuelling time of around three minutes provide the same level of convenience as
a petrol-powered car. Mirai delivers everything expected of a nextgeneration car: an immediately recognisable design; an exhilarating drive that stems from the superior handling stability secured by the car’s low centre of gravity; and quiet but powerful acceleration delivered by the electric motor. Hydrogen has the benefit of being able to be generated from many different natural sources and man-made by products – even sewage sludge. It can also be created from water using natural, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. When compressed, it has a higher energy density than batteries and it is relatively easy to store and transport. These qualities give it the potential to be used in the future for power generation and a wide range of other applications. FCVs can generate their own electricity from hydrogen, which means they can be a key contributor to making a future hydrogen-based society a reality and accelerating energy diversification. A-CLASS WINS FLEET CAR OF THE YEAR ACCOLADE AT ACFO AWARDS
T
he prestigious headline award for Fleet Car of the Year was given to the AClass – considered by the ACFO members to be best in its class – overcoming the challenge of almost 20 other models. The Association of Car Fleet Operators supports fleet decision-makers to improve the efficiency of their Fleet operation – members of which include most of Britain’s major fleets. The Awards – voted for online by ACFO members – are highly prized as they reflect the day-to-day operational experience and expertise of fleet decision-makers. In announcing the A-Class Award, John Pryor, ACFO chairman, commented: “The AClass’s triumph in this year’s ACFO Awards is reflective of the changing shape of the UK company car market. The importance of the company car as an employee recruitment and retention tool means that vehicles across all market sectors are today being considered by businesses and their staff. However, vehicles must continue to be fit-for-purpose and deliver 66 December 2014/January 2015
excellent total cost of ownership as well as first class MPG and low emissions. In voting the AClass Fleet Car of the Year, the ACFO membership clearly believes the vehicle is cost effective to operate, safe, reliable and environmentally-friendly.â€? Sally Dennis, Head of Fleet, Mercedes-Benz UK, commented: “We are delighted that the AClass has won the Fleet Car of the Year Award – it highlights our continuous drive to offer efficient, low-emission vehicles to our Fleet customers as we strive to meet their needs with an ever-improving product range.â€? Some 10,000 A-Classes have been bought by fleet customers so far this year – an 84 per cent increase over 2013. This year the A-Class range expanded with the A 180 CDI ECO edition – priced from ÂŁ21,965 OTR – which features weight-saving measures, powertrain refinements and improved fuel consumption – producing 92 g/km CO2 and achieving 78.5 mpg. The A-Class continues to grow in the UK with almost 28,000 registered so far this year.
