ow time flies when you’re having fun! I know its a total cliché but I genuinely cannot believe where this year has gone, to already find ourselves over halfway through the year is complete madness. The premature exit of the England team in its World Cup campaign was a disappointment to say the least, and I’m no football pundit but to be honest, it was hardly a surprise either was it! Fortunately for the people of Leek the football void has been filled with lots of other distractions making for a jam packed summer of fun still to come. We have been lucky enough to enjoy some glorious weather for several community events the town has hosted recently, in particular the overwhelming success of Leek’s first ever Country and Western weekend at the end of June. This was organised in memory of former councillor and Leek campion Steve Povey, who would have been proud of not only the scale of the celebrations but the support it was given by the public and the enjoyment it brought to so many. See our double page spread of some of the weekend’s highlights. Looking ahead and the partying doesn’t stop there. Leek’s popular Cricket Club up at the beautiful Highfields ground will again be hosting its annual Cricket and Beer Festival on the 4th to 6th July; 15 real ales, six ciders and two games of cricket will be the centrepiece for a truly memorable weekend. Organisers are also gearing up for one of the biggest dates in the Staffordshire Moorlands calendar, the 2014 Leek and District Show which returns to the green expanse of Birchall playing fields on Saturday 26th July. Now in its 52nd year, the event once again expects to attract thousands of visitors as town and country come together for one of the area’s largest agricultural shows, see page 11 for ticket information. We take a look at some of the highlight’s of the month-long Arts Festival which came to a close with the final few events in June. Despite last year’s rocky outcome, 2014 has been a resounding success with locals really getting on board and showing their support to the festival. So much hard work, dedication and organisation, all by volunteers goes into events like the Arts Festival, it would have been heartbreaking to see disappointing turnouts, instead many of the performances and shows were complete sellouts and put the celebration of everything cultural about Leek very much back on track. All this plus so much more, read about up and coming local businesses, young stars and enjoy all our regular professional contributors who offer their advice and services on a wealth of subjects. Plenty to get your teeth into in ‘Leek Life’. Best wishes and happy reading.

ou’d be forgiven for thinking that the new shop frontage of Bentley Insurance in Stockwell Street, Leek, was a new business arrival to town, but you would be wrong. Bentley Insurance have been established since 1922 with the current Management team taking over the reins in 1999. Although they have had an office in town for over 10 years

it is only recently that they have decided to become more visible in the town with the opening of their new reception and front office. This is open weekdays from 9am to 5pm. Bentleys location in the heart of the town at Stockwell Street is ideal for both new and existing clients making it easy for them to call in and be able to discuss their insurance needs with an experienced and

knowledgeable member of staff. The team is made up of 15 local staff headed up by joint MDs Mike Rostron and Sarah Millward and Financial Director Alex Cowburn. As we all know insurance can be a complicated business, unfortunately sometimes the only time you know you are not fully covered is when disaster strikes and you need to make a claim. Bentleys team of experienced and friendly staff can guide you through the process making sure that you have the right cover for your individual needs at a competitive price. Against the sustained TV advertising for product comparison sites , Bentley are bucking the trend. They fully realise that not everyone wants to rely on an insurance product dealt with over the internet with a few clicks without actually speaking to anyone. People have individual needs and one size does not fit all. Unfortunately this only becomes evident when a claim occurs and it is then too late. Managing Director – Mike Rostron – ‘ we want to talk to our clients to ensure we fully understand their needs, we are helping to protect our clients most valuable assets, we must get it right and make sure we arrange the most suitable product for them at a competitive price. Unfortunately things can go wrong sometimes resulting in having to make a claim , we are also there to help you through this often distressing experience’. Annie Davies , a Leek local , has been with Bentleys for 12

hings that matter to you months having worked in the insurance industry for all of her working life. Many of Annie’s loyal clients followed her to Bentleys , wanting to still have the personal and professional service they were used to. The management at Bentleys quickly saw the benefits of this approach and this was a major part in their decision to open the shop front making the customer focussed, face to face approach available to a wider audience. Lee Colcough, the Personal Lines Manager, sits alongside Annie in the front office. Lee has a wealth of knowledge and experience and along with Annie they make an impressive duo. Bentleys offer a wide range

of products including large commercial concerns, business packages, shops, private car, household, travel and agriculture. They have the expertise and knowledge to find the most suitable and competitively priced products for their clients, this is backed up by a customer focussed team . Mike Rostron – ‘we are proud to be based in Leek , we employ experienced local staff who enjoy talking to their clients and give a top class personal service, offering a full range of products. Whatever your insurance needs we are confident that we will be able to help. Call in for a chat and meet the team- we are sure you will be impressed ‘

ne of the biggest dates in the Staffordshire Moorlands calendar, the 2014 Leek & District Show returns to the green expanse of Birchall playing fields on Saturday 26th July. Now in its 52nd year, the event once again expects to attract thousands of visitors for one of the country’s largest agricultural shows. Packed with traditional attractions, this year’s event has two important new features. Organisers are delighted to welcome Leek United Building Society as the new main sponsor in a three-year deal. 2014 also sees a significant change in parking arrangements, with the Show’s park and ride facility moving to Kniveden Farm, Mount Road on the edge of town. Speaking to Leek Life, Leek United Chief Executive Kevin Wilson said: “We are absolutely delighted to be the main sponsors of Leek Show. The community is at the heart of all we do at Leek United, and there is no better event than this to

bring families and businesses together in our heartland.” Once again an impressive range of livestock classes, competitions, trade stands and other attractions have been lined up, not to mention exciting main arena events. Main arena entertainment includes the motorised thrills of the Mark Stannage International Stunt Team, Peter Hallam with his Dog and Ducks, and displays by the English School of Falconry and the Staffordshire Moorlands Hunt, plus the impressive Grand Parade of livestock. The show is famous for the quality of its livestock classes and hundreds of exhibitors will be preparing their animals to perfection– from sheep and goats to cattle and shires – ready for the judges to inspect. There will also be a wide range of other attractions including horse and pony, horticulture, flower design, crafts, Women’s Institutes and many trade stands.

link and you could easily miss one of Leek’s best hidden treasures, the charming under cover, cobbled shopping emporium, Getliffe’s Yard. Found adjacent to Thomson Travel on Derby Street is the entrance to the Victorian-style courtyard filled with an eclectic mix of stylish shops, small independent retailers and businesses you could just spend hours perusing.

One such shop is independent women’s boutique Anne Morris Fashions of Leek. Set over three floors, the expanse of styles, ranges and hand picked designers on offer is second to none, and why it has loyal customers coming back time and time again. Appearances can however be deceiving and on first glance the shop may appear to only be quaint when in fact it is a fashion ‘Tardis’ housing names you just can’t get on the high street such as Betty Barclay, Joseph Ribkoff, Apanage, Michele Jeans, Tom Bowker, Presin (Barcelona) and big fashion house James Lakeland recently joined the list of quality designer brands available in store. So if it’s a day at the races, a mother of the bride outfit or simply a pair of jeans or a fabulous casual jacket you are after pop in and see what Anne has in store. Further along Getliffe’s galleria and young aspiring clothes designer Holly Nancarrow can be found. Boasting an eclectic mix of bespoke designs and re-worked vintage items of clothing, Holly launched her own business last year designing garments and making pieces for her clothing range ‘Handmade By HollyCrow’. Already a favourite on the vintage and handmade fair circuit, ‘Handmade By HollyCrow’ also features carefully selected accessories and vintage items as well as an original line of home wares and soft furnishings. Along side her off the rail designs, Holly offers a complete bespoke design service and loves the challenge of creating a look especially designed with a client in mind. Existing and new customers are always welcome to join Holly to browse her collection at Unit 15 Getliffe’s Yard. Situated at the far end of Getliffe’s Yard, is Getliffe’s Restaurant, Cafe and Wine Bar, which recently underwent a transformation into a Leek themed restaurant featuring two wall murals of the town by local photographer and Leek Life favourite Brett Trafford along with canvas photographs of bygone Leek. As well as the restaurant there is a bar, two soft seated areas and the covered heated outdoor area for al fresco dinning, a great place to meet with

FASHION boutique Twine Clothing was set up by enterprising identical twins Gill Conroy and Judy Smith in March this year and has since gone from strength to strength. Stocking a wide range of both Ladies and Gentlemen’s clothing, shoes and accessories, Twine offers the very best in quality products, from stylish country tweed to crisp cotton shirts, outdoor wear and smart lifestyle clothing. With international brands such as Weird Fish and Soaked in Luxury on sale, as well as independently sourced labels for those looking for more unique attire, Twine Clothing offers something for everyone and it's all available in sizes 8 to 20. Based at Denstone Hall Farm Shop, the store is a dream come true for Gill and Judy, who say that family is at the heart of everything they do and in fact provided the motivation behind the creation of Twine Clothing. They explained: “We come from a very close family. “Dad said that looking smart was a must for all his girls, and our Mum too. He was very proud when we both won first and

second prizes for the Best Dressed Lady at Uttoxeter Racecourse in the very first year they held the competition. ‘That's my girls,’ he would say with a big smile on his face. “So when the idea to open Twine Clothing came up, we knew instantly it was the right choice for us and we seized the opportunity.” The successful clothes boutique has now been open since March and the pair, who have worked together since leaving school, say that Denstone Hall Farm Shop has proved to be the ideal rural location, welcoming people from across the area and from all walks of life. The inspiration for the shop's interesting name also came from their much loved father. “When he was alive our father always worked hard and like all farmers, always carried bale twine in his pocket, known to farmers as ‘The Farmers Friend.’ “We asked him one day why he carried it and his reply was ‘you never know when you will need it.’ “So when we were thinking about a name for the shop it just had to be Twine, and if you drop the ‘e’, it spells twin!”

WESTWOOD GOLF CLUB

Popular club is on ‘par’

S

et in rolling Staffordshire Moorlands countryside on the outskirts of Leek, Westwood Golf Club was originally founded back in 1899, with the original nine hole course extended to 18 holes in the late 1980s. A new clubhouse soon followed in 1992, equipped with a Pro Shop, modern changing facilities, bar, lounge and meeting rooms. The picturesque course rises gently from its setting in the beautiful River Churnet Valley, with peaceful views across to the wooded hills beyond. The 18 hole, 6105 yard, par 70 course can be enjoyed by golfers of all ages and abilities. It is sufficiently demanding for the more experienced, but not overwhelming for novices. Renowned for the warm welcome extended to members, guests and visitors alike, Westwood Golf Club is often a hive of activity with members hosting an array of fundraisers, events and competitions throughout the year as well as hiring out the facilities for private functions.

20 Leek Life July/August 2014

Leek Life recently paid a visit to the club to have a look at some of the events that have been taking place and to meet some of the key people who help to keep the organisation running. It was a case of the club giving something back when we attended the Captains’ Charity

Each year both the men’s and ladies captains respectively choose a charity to support and raise funds for throughout the year

Weekend presentation evening on Sunday 8th June. Each year both the men’s and ladies captains respectively choose a charity to support and raise funds for throughout the year. Money is generated from various competitions and

events the club hosts and at the end of the year, what has been raised is split equally between the two chosen causes. Alan Hulme, Captain of Westwood Golf Club for 2014 decided to make the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice, at Trentham Lakes his charity for the year. Alan was very keen on keeping the charity a local one and after describing a visit to the hospice with his wife earlier in the year as a ‘humbling experience’ he is proud to be supporting such a worthy cause. Westwood's lady Captain Pat Cannon has been raising money for the golf club this year by holding plenty of raffles and competitions. It was however during the Captain’s Charity weekend that Paul Moore a fundraising representative from the Donna Louise Hospice came along to see what the club had been doing in support of the vital service it offers to local children with life limiting illnesses and their families. Following on from that it was not an unlucky day for the

Members of the society travelled from all over North Staffordshire to play golf at Westwood. Captain of the Society for 2014 Jean Greenhalgh hosted 72 past captains, from 16 golf clubs on the day. The Past Captains Society was founded in 1966 by Marie Goodwin and is looking forward to the 50th Anniversary. Preparations are already well underway for the celebration in 2016. Each year the society has a spring and autumn meeting, three matches against other counties, a Captains day and a Presidents day, all of which are very well supported. There is also a bridge club which is very popular from September through to March. The competition of the day was an 18 hole Stableford played over three divisions, with two main trophies won on the day. The Captain went on to thank everyone for their support on what was a very successful and enjoyable day Another favourite with the ladies, which is becoming a regular and popular event on the club’s social calendar is its own Royal Ascot Race Day which took place on Thursday 19th June. Entering into the true spirit of ladies day at the races, all of the guests came dressed in their finery with plenty of impressive hats and fascinators to be marvelled at. On arrival a glass of bubbly and a tasty buffet lunch was enjoyed ahead of watching the drama of the real Royal Ascot races

had by all who attended. In other club news, at the start of 2014 Westwood were pleased to appoint their new Head Professional 21 year old James Austerberry. James, a former Westwood High student joined Westwood Golf Club as Head Professional after being the Assistant

Professional since 2010. As a fully qualified PGA professional, James has a high level of understanding on all aspects of the game including retail, club fitting and repairs. He also offers coaching for all levels and abilities, from beginners to the more advanced player. James got into the sport early after being brought down to the club by his father Martin for lessons. At the age of nine he joined the juniors and from then on has continued to progress with his game and skills to reach a professional standard following the completion of his PGA course last year. Being appointed Head Professional has been a brilliant opportunity for James who is working hard running the shop and developing a junior academy at Westwood which will hopefully see more new talent and members come through the club. James regularly plays on the Staffordshire PGA circuit as well as the Midland PGA circuit through the summer in which we wish him all the best. Wildlife Trust urges everyone who loves the Roaches to support footpath appeal

Path to Trig Point Laying of flagstones and stone pitching where needed

Packed with breath-taking views and challenging climbs for all abilities, yet easily accessible from many towns and cities, it is little wonder that the Roaches in Staffordshire’s Peak District receive an estimated 100,000 visits every year. Sadly, this intense visitor pressure all year round coupled with thin soils is having a detrimental effect on the fragile environment. Huge scars, sometimes five metres across and over a metre deep have been cut into the side of the hills by walkers’ boots and water runoff. Not only are these scars ugly, they are also damaging habitat, making access treacherous and affecting water quality at nearby Tittesworth Water.

COUNTRY AND WESTERN WEEKEND

WILD WEST

weekend showdown does Steve proud

L

eek’s first ever country and western weekend, organised in memory of the late Steve Povey, went down almost as well as one of his oatcakes when it was staged in the town over the weekend of Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June. The sun was shining attracting the crowds in their thousands to enjoy the ‘wild west’ themed entertainment, dancing, singing, stalls and refreshments put on in the town centre and in Brough Park over the two days. Organised by Leek Town Council Events Committee in memory of Steve, a former Leek businessman, councillor, and town Mayor, who left a donation in his will to stage a big party for the people of Leek, would certainly have been proud by the turnout and standard of the free festivities. Inspired by his oatcake connections, Steve’s ‘party for the people’ was based on a ‘Gunfight at the Oatcake Corral’ with some of the highlights including line dancing displays and the formidable Lonestar Re-Enactment Group and the Lincoln County Regulators with their full blown authentic western town which they erected in Brough Park and where they performed spectacular live ‘shoot outs’ and re-enactments for the crowds throughout the weekend. 24 Leek Life July/August 2014

RECIPES FOR LIFE

The summertime’s Best of British

A

s much of the country unites to celebrate the World Cup and this year’s much anticipated summer of sport gets underway with the cricket and tennis, we thought what could be better than a ‘Best of British’ inspired recipe page.

Nothing goes better with a pot of afternoon tea than a traditional homemade scone with jam and cream, the perfect way to spend a relaxing British summer afternoon and pay homage to one of the nation’s most iconic dishes, a deliciously traditional cream tea.

Jam and cream scones

looks like breadcrumbs. Stir in the raisins or sultanas, if using.

ROACHES TEA ROOMS

N

estled in the heart of the stunning Staffordshire Moorlands countryside is a rare treat for the senses in the form of the family owned and run Roaches Tea Rooms. A series of quirky tea pot signs, starting along the main Leek to Buxton Road, points visitors to what is truely a hidden gem. This is because as well as the delicious home cooked dishes which are available to enjoy, so too are unrivalled and breathtaking views stretching miles across the expanse of beautiful English countryside in which the Tea Rooms is set. The peaceful and idyllic setting of premises was what first attracted current owners Karen and Andrew to hold their own wedding celebrations there some years prior to the opportunity of purchasing the Tea Rooms and adjacent holiday cottages came up which they purchased jointly with Andrew’s parents Michael and Diane seven years ago back in May 2007. Since then and for Karen and Andrew two of their own children later, the family have never looked back, continuing to work hard in building up an excellent reputation for their high standard of quality food and customer service to match. Open all year round and daily from 9am to 5pm from March through to October and closing slightly earlier at 4pm during the winter months of November to February, the Roaches Tea Rooms is a popular retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life where a full and comprehensive menu of locally sourced produce is transformed by Head Chef and Manager Ian into freshly prepared home made meals. The menu truly offers something for

everyone ranging from full English breakfasts, light bites, and daily specials to afternoon tea and freshly baked scones and cakes, home cooked main meals, Sunday roasts and of course the tea rooms famous 'perfect puddings'. Chef Ian always makes sure people’s needs are catered for with a full Gluten free menu available and anyone with any special dietary requirements are looked after. The award winning Roaches Tea Rooms set 300 metres above sea level, is located on the South-western edge of the Peak District National Park at Upper Hulme, and only a stones throw from Leek making it a popular spot for locals and tourists, in particular for walkers, climbers and cyclists enjoying the rugged beauty of the Roaches, down the valley to Tittesworth reservoir and beyond where on a clear day the Wrekin in Shropshire and the Welsh mountains can even be seen. Developing and diversifying the menu to cater for all manner of occasions led to the decision to apply for an alcohol licence so as well as serving an excellent selection of teas, coffees, and chilled drinks, diners can now enjoy a full range of alcoholic beverages too. Tables can be booked for parties or larger groups of people and special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, christenings and intimate weddings can also be catered for. In addition to the tea rooms the friendly and helpful staff also assist with any outside catering functions, a side of the business which Ian has been developing, as well as helping to run the two self-catering cottages which both sleep up to six people. So next time you’re passing why not follow the tea pot signs and give all your senses a treat, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Leek Life July/August 2014 29

Attended by visiting guest members from the Potteries Branch, Landlord Harry was congratulated for his extended stay of over 30 years in charge of the hostelry and the manner in which he maintains the

high standards of his beer. With an ever rotating range of two guest ales supplementing his traditional pint of Bass, the pub has built up an undeniable reputation for a tip top conditioned pint. Originally built in the early Victorian period c1830 the pub was known as the Queens Arms until 1976 when the business was purchased by Geoff Harrison, current owner Paul’s father. With an array of small ‘bars and snugs’ available, the discerning drinker is welcomed into a world reminiscent of a previous bygone era with the internal decoration retaining the ambiance of its former self; including a familiar picture of the widowed monarch staring down from the wall. With a million stories to tell of past glories stretching back through time that offered a well earned pint to the throngs of silk and textile workers that once frequented its rooms, the pub is a must visit and welcome addition to the growing real ale trail around Leek. The pub is located at 17 Osborne Street, Leek, ST13 6LJ.

PROPERTY

Kerry Smart, Franchise Partner at Hunters Stoke on Trent, advises

how to make your ‘best offer’ on a home as the market heats up!

T

here’s no doubt about it, the property market is heating up, you've found the perfect house, only to be told by the agent that lots of other people think it’s perfect too – what do you do now? Well, you'll probably be asked to submit your best offer by a certain time and date. This might sound daunting, but we can give you a quick guide on how to go about this: 1. Do your research and offer as much as you think the property is worth – if it’s on the market for £210,000 and you think it’s worth £220,000 then offer that. There’s little point in offering less then regretting it later. 2. Point out that you’re ready to go and can complete within, say, 6 weeks; also include your buying position e.g., you’ve sold or you’re a first time buyer and include details of your mortgage adviser, conveyancer and estate agent so that the information can be easily confirmed. 3. Try to find out when the seller wants to complete and be as flexible as possible with your timescales. This is sometimes just as important to the seller as getting the best price. 4. Get on with everything from your end as soon as possible. The seller and their agent will be very impressed if the surveyor goes round promptly

34 Leek Life July/August 2014

and you are ready for exchange within a few weeks. 5. Be friendly to the agent, and to the seller if you meet them. Emotions are an important part of the buying and selling process and no one wants to deal with someone who is going to be difficult or wants everything their own way. 6. Offer an unusual amount. If you’re thinking of offering £225,000, offer £225,100 – it may be just that little bit higher than your nearest rival and money counts. 7. Point out in your offer letter that although you’re having a survey done, you won’t ‘chip’ at the price unless they find something major. Every seller and agent is worried about this stage of the process and dealing with re-negotiations. 8. Don’t be late with your offer! You must get it to the agent by the time stated for the offer to be considered. 9. Good luck! We’d love to hear from you if you have any questions about the property market. Contact Kerry or Dan at Hunters Stoke on Trent (stoke@huntersnet.co.uk or 01782 626522). Watch this space for more handy tips, ideas and insights in upcoming issues of Leek Life.

ASK THE EXPERT

Warning: Health and Safety construction underway

E

arly in April I was kindly invited to a seminar in Knutsford by Darren Bedson of BPA services based in Newcastle, the topic being the proposed changes to construction health and safety. Once there I was told that the meeting would go on for 2 ½ hours without a break. So imagine the atmosphere in the room of about 200 people 90% of which doing a similar role in construction health and safety as the speaker told them their job as they know will no longer be recognised in the form it currently exists. Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations was introduced in 1994 and it dealt with health and safety issue in the construction industry, exclusively to non domestic works. The person in charge of ensuring a building site was safe, was called the planning supervisor. Possibly for obvious reasons in 2007 a revamp of the CDM regulation the person in charge became known as the CDM coordinator, but still the regulations were there to monitor safety on commercial sites and not households. There were some exemptions to the regulations apart from households, projects less than 30 days from start to finish, or 500 man hours, but the rest were reported as part of the process to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Each contractor was expected to produce a method statement of each process during construction, decide whether there were any risks and what to do to reduce or eliminate the risk. The new CDM regulations set to launch in April 2015 will have two significant changes, firstly the CDM Coordinator role is obsolete and is replaced by ‘Principle Designer’ and is awarded to the person at early stages of a development (I wanted to leave at that point). Secondly and more importantly for most of the readers – the CDM regulations 2015 will cover works carried out to a household, or domestic property. The client has to appoint a Principle Designer at the early stages and this can be the first contractor working on a job, and placed in charge reporting the job is taking place to the HSE, and taking control of construction health and safety. The 30 day exemption rule still applies, but a new rule

38 Leek Life July/August 2014

‘unless there is more than one trade involved’, will become applicable. Therefore an electrician, plumber and tiler working on your new bathroom will need to be reported to HSE, one of them become the principle designer and takes charge of health and safety to make sure risk assessments and method statements are produced. Conversely a roofer replacing the tiles on your three storey house is exempt, unless he takes over 30 days to complete the works. It seems the European government have been pushing for the change to include household properties in line with other EU member countries, to maintain or improve worker protection and health and safety on small construction site. Monitoring and maintaining construction health and safety is not a role I want to take up, thankfully I have sufficient experience in commercial projects to understand the process, but I would make sure my clients are aware of their responsibility under the new CDM regulations and pass on details of people like Darren Bedson who are better suited to advise on it. If you are abroad this summer and see the builders working on a roof or laying bricks in their flip-flops just remember what we should aim to aspire to. REFLECTIONS COACHING

Dealing with changes in ‘Life’

T

he summer has arrived, everyone is looking forward to the school holidays and exams are over and done with. Young adults are entering further education, university or going out to seek their first employment. It’s a time of unsettlement and change and with change comes uncertainty, worry, and stress. How do we ensure that our young adults are equipped to cope at this difficult time? Understanding how change affects us is key to how we cope with it. There is a cycle that we go through with any change and understanding that the emotions we feel are normal can really help us through the process. The Reflections Coaching Change Curve demonstrates the 7 steps that we all go through when a change comes our way and applies whether the change is of our own making e.g. going off to university or enforced e.g. compulsory redundancy. • Shock - This occurs when you first face the change. Have you ever heard that voice in your head saying ‘this really isn’t happening to me?’ • Denial - This is when we pretend that the change isn’t happening or it won’t affect us. • Frustration - We look for someone to blame, ourselves or someone else. Thoughts of ‘if only I hadn’t…….’, ‘Why did she have to suggest that?…….’. We start to look for all the things that might go wrong. • Confusion – It’s common to spend time wondering what’s going to happen next. You may start to question why things are being done a

certain way. • Acceptance – This is the turning point and is particularly important if you want to move forward in your thinking. It’s at this point that you start to understand why things happen. • Discovery - is where problem solving starts and you start to view the change in a positive way. You will see opportunities ahead and start to plan the future. • Moving on - The last stage. You can look back over what’s happened. Take learning from some of the negative aspects and focus on your strengths here. You will by now have fully accepted the changes. You may find that after the initial shock a lot of time is spent going between the stages of denial, frustration and confusion and your journey might not be a linear one, until at some point you accept the change. Remember it’s natural to experience some or all of the elements of the 7 stages. The most important thing you can do to support a young adult or help yourself through this time of change is to aim to reach the acceptance stage. Do acknowledge the negative emotions, and deal with the symptoms, but keep a focus on the positive aspects of the change. Carolyn Trafford is a Leek based personal development coach and an expert in supporting others to deal with life change. Whether it’s a new job role, starting a business or dealing with redundancy get in touch today.

OVERTON BANK HOUSE

Leek’s Georgian gem provides

Y

ou could have easily walked past the refined Georgian front door of Overton Bank House a thousand times without realising what a hidden gem lies beyond it. Formally used as a recording studio, offices and living accommodation by owners Steve and Barbara Prentice, Overton Bank House has, over the past six months, been lovingly and tastefully transformed and restored back into living accommodation in the form of a luxury seven bedroom holiday home. The Grade II listed town house, which once belonged to the Earl of Macclesfield, could not be better positioned to explore the delights Leek town centre and the stunning countryside beyond has to offer visitors to the area. Now available for bookings, Overton Bank House provides the perfect place for a get together, family gathering, celebration, mini break or holiday destination offering guests a superb, top of the range, self-catering holiday home for groups or families, combining historic elegance with comfortable furnishings, state-ofthe-art entertainment systems and all the facilities and amenities visitors could want. Throughout the renovation Barbara and Steve have put a lot of thought into the needs of their clients while at the same time retaining the building’s period charm and character. Their attention to detail and obvious use of quality and top of the range furnishing and fitting make it a delight to visit, something which the couple are keen for locals to come and do if they are interested in booking the holiday home. The property has a huge, well-equipped, open plan dining kitchen with a range cooker, fridge freezer, microwave, toaster, dishwasher and

s the perfect private getaway plenty of tools, cutlery and crockery, while the elegant dining area seats up to 16 people (the maximum sleeping capacity for guests). The three separate sitting rooms, two on the ground floor and one on the second floor provides plenty of space to relax, chill out or gather together. The sitting room on the upper floor has a TV and Playstation 3, and on the ground floor one has a wood burning stove and the other a large flat screen television complete with surround sound DVD/Blueray player and satellite box with Sky Sports subscription. Out through to the back of the property and there a useful utility room housing a sink, washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board, and an all important separate beer/wine fridge. The large, beautifully maintained, walled garden is a real asset to the property, even people who have lived in Leek all their lives don’t know it exists. Providing a private and peaceful haven despite being in the very heart of the town, the garden is spacious and well equipped for summer celebrations complete with ample garden furniture, barbecue, fire pit and garden WC. In addition there is also a small separate courtyard, which is a real suntrap, that has seating and where guests can access the garage and bike store from. Overton Bank House will accommodate 16 people. But to be clear with their guests Barbara and Steve advertise the property as sleeping 12 plus four due to the formation of the rooms; which are all unique, beautifully decorated and furnished and each given their own identity with a subtle theme linked to the name of the room. There are five double bedrooms, one twin

bedroom and a family suite which consists of a main bedroom leading to a separate twin bedroom. These two rooms share an en-suite. A further two guests can use the upstairs sitting room sofa bed which also has its own small separate kitchenette facilities. Each of the individual, boutique-style bedrooms has a flat screen TV, iPod docking station, hairdryer, hair straightening iron mat, luggage rack, sumptuous beds and the best top quality bed linen available. An ample amount of bathrooms and WC’s serve each floor and are all fitted out with clean and contemporary suites. The entire property is a real delight to be in and a wonderful place for family, friends or business acquaintances of local people to stay in as well as tourists and holiday makers. The Prentice’s have put a great amount of heart and soul into the property with their attention to detail making it not only aesthetically pleasing but comfortable and practical for guests, providing them with everything they could need during their stay. Overton Bank House is centrally heated and very family friendly providing a cot, high chair, and child changing facilities if required. Free parking for three cars is available outside, as well as inexpensive paid for car parks and free car parking in some local streets next to the house. LEEK ARTS FESTIVAL

Positive turnaround for A A

s the 2014 Leek Arts Festival drew to a close Leek Life asked Festival spokesman Phil Edmeades to look back on six weeks of hectic entertainment in the Queen of the Moorlands. “Although slightly smaller in scale than last year – 42 events instead of last year's 50 or so – this year's programme still managed to cover most types of art and culture with a very definite ‘something for everyone’ feel about it. “After losing around £4,000 last year the festival committee set out with a determination to minimise the risk of further losses by limiting our exposure to the risk of events failing to at least break 46 Leek Life July/August 2014

even. “With some of the major acts booked by the festival committee costing £2,000 – and more – it was a case of balancing ticket prices against overall expenditure while simultaneously trying to keep things as affordable as possible for local people. “Thanks to support from our sponsors and a noticeable 'feel good factor' among this year's audiences, we managed to strike that balance and maintain our finances in a healthy state.” So, what were the highlights? Phil continued: “In terms of events organised directly by the Festival committee we kicked-off with a bang

Arts Festival’s Fortunes when the hugely popular folk comedian Richard Digance delighted a capacity audience at the Foxlowe Arts Centre on 6th May. His hugely entertaining brand of humour had people literally crying with laughter and at the end of the night there were many requests for him to make a return visit or for someone of a similar stature to play Leek Arts Festival next year. “We're actively pursuing that request and the Festival committee are currently talking to management representing several 'big names' including Jasper Carrott, Mike Harding, Mark Thompson and others. “8th May saw another sell-out at The

Foxlowe with Radio 2 Folk Show presenter Mark Radcliffe raising a storm with his new band The Foes. Next came Burbage Brass band swiftly followed by the free folk day - ably put together by Festival deputy chairman Dave Rhead – who also organised the well-supported evening ceilidh. “The ever-popular Fairport Convention made their 24th annual visit to Leek Arts Festival on 15th May and once again attracted a sell-out crowd. We do occasionally get complaints about Fairport coming year after year, but the demand for tickets speaks for itself - it's one of those 'if it ain't broke don't try to fix it' things and

many people are already looking forward to their Fairport fix in May next year. “Saturday 17th May was another memorable night in the Festival calendar when celtic folk/rock outfit The Roving Crows - who played to just 35 people when they came to Leek last year – virtually filled The Foxlowe this time around. “It was great to see them get such a good reception – a confirmation of the faith shown by members of the Festival committee who first saw this band playing in a pub beer garden back in August 2012. “Another near sell-out came on 31st May when Gavin Sutherland took to the Foxlowe stage with Uttoxeter blues outfit The Vice Bishops. “And the Festival reached a climax on 12th June when the Birmingham Conservatoire Folk Ensemble - 46 young musicians with massive amounts of enthusiasm and energy – played to a capacity crowd.” Key events staged by outside organisations this year included – among others – The Staffordshire Moorlands Open Art Exhibition, All Saints Operatics Society's Oh What A Lovely War, The Situation's Big May Birthday, Art in The Park, Leek Choral Society's A Night At The Opera, the Silken Burlesque Varietease (which for some reason attracted more ladies than men!), Wetley Rocks Male Voice Choir, Joni Talk's A Night At The Musicals, the Peak District Big Band, Foxlowe Films and the Phoenix Singers On a final note Phil added: “On behalf of the Festival committee I want to thank everyone involved in this year's programme including sponsors, outside organisations who have staged their own events, the Foxlowe volunteers and trustees and staff at Leek TIC. I’d also like to thank Leek Life and the rest of the local press for their help in publicising Festival events. “The committee volunteers put in a huge amount of work to organise the programme each year, but none of it 48 Leek Life July/August 2014

could happen without the co-operation of all those groups and individuals who so enthusiastically lend their support. We are very grateful to them all. “Planning for the 2015 Leek Arts Festival has already begun and we hope to be in a position to reveal the identity of some of the artists being booked within the next few months.”

Show judging is just horseplay for local solicitor Catherine

W

ith the summer marks the start of the show season and for local solicitor Catherine Whittles, a hectic juggling act between work and her passion for all things equine. What could be a more typically English summer scene than that of a county showground, packed with people, produce, trade stands, trailers, livestock, show rings and show jumps filling every square inch of space? For Catherine, a legal partner at law firm Bowcock & Pursaill, the show season means juggling a demanding diary of commitments, as both she and her partner David are set to attend more than 30 events around the country, alongside her work at the solicitors whose strong links to the farming community means the firm is once again sponsoring and attending Leek, Manifold, Ashbourne and Ipstones county Shows this year. Speaking to Leek Life Catherine explained: “Supporting shows like these as a firm and as a competitor or judge, is so crucial because they have struggled recently. “It’s become so expensive to put on a show now, because there are so many rules and regulations in terms of health and safety, that you have to pay people professionally to come in and provide things like veterinary services. “Then there’s the huge cost of diesel, which means instead of people going to lots of shows they are struggling to afford to travel so they are

50 Leek Life July/August 2014

becoming more selective about which ones they attend. “Shows also rely hugely on an army of volunteers, and because people have got busier in their work it’s harder to find someone with the time to commit to a show.” Thankfully Catherine’s passion for rural life means she has no plans to take a back seat in the show ring, where she enjoys competing in one day eventing, assisting as a fence judge at events such as Brand Hall One Day Event or Meynell Point To Point – all while caring for her own menagerie of animals at home. “I love being outside and the rural lifestyle,” said Catherine, “and I love one day eventing, although I don’t have a horse to compete on at the moment despite having six at home! With Catherine based full-time behind the desk at Bowcock & Pursaill during the week, the stable yard is David’s domain, and it was horses and hunting which brought the pair together. “David has always worked with horses and been involved in buying and selling them. He enjoys judging at shows both ride judging, where the judge gets on board to see how a horse goes, and conformation where you look at how a horse is put together. He’s judging at the Horse of the Year show this year, which is a great honour, and I’m really looking forward to going along with him.” Closer to home David will be judging at the Shropshire, Cheshire, Newport and Nantwich shows, while Catherine assists him as a ring steward, while also fence judging at events and point to point meets. “David and I go to so many shows simply because we love them - the atmosphere, the beautiful horses and interesting classes - but also because it’s simply a lovely community of people and it’s good to catch up with familiar faces and clients.”

n the height of the summer there can be no better place than sitting alongside the boundary rope at Highfields watching a nervous batsman edging towards his maiden hundred. With the sound of leather on willow accompanied by a refreshing pint of real ale, this quintessential English setting is a must for the

52 Leek Life July/August 2014

discerning enthusiast. Over the weekend of 4th to 6th July, Leek Cricket Club will be holding its annual Cricket and Beer Festival; 15 Real ales, six ciders and two games of cricket will be the centrepiece for a truly memorable weekend. The opposition for the NSSC Premier Division Champions on the Saturday afternoon will be

Porthill Park, whilst on the Sunday a ‘friendly’ invitation match has been arranged between Leek and a League Development Eleven. Some past and familiar faces will be battling it out on the hallowed square, set against the latest crop of up and coming young guns. This should be a gripping encounter and hails to be a tight well fought contest which pits the guile of established players against the enthusiasm of youth. So as the sun begins to set and the matches draw to the time of stumps, those who enjoy a slightly more ‘rocking time’ can listen to the sounds of two local bands. Following on from their recent tour of several top North Staffordshire venues which included the Victoria Hall and the Sugarmill, a very talented young band, ‘In The Cards’ will be performing their latest release ‘The Future’ on the Friday evening while on the Saturday night, Leek’s very own ‘The Fires’ will top the bill. With food available throughout the weekend, the event promises something for everyone; everything from a relaxing leisurely afternoon, sipping a wide choice of unusual real ales… packed with flavour, to listening to the beat of the latest covers. Bring the family and mark the date in your diary as one not to be missed! For further details please contact;- Leek Cricket Club on 01538382636

eek based Ben Schoop, owner of Wash-AWheelie regularly cleans across the Staffordshire Moorlands and Stoke on Trent, providing a vital service for all his customers. It’s a business that requires dedication, a sense of humour, excellent customer care and some very long hours. So why is he asking for more bins to clean, and on a Saturday too? Speaking to the Times and Echo Ben explained: “My customers are very special to me. They are loyal and supportive. I only spend a short time at each customer’s house, but over a number of weeks and many five minute chats you learn so much about people.

“A number of my customers are big supporters of the Stroke Club at Haregate Community Centre in Leek. It’s a charity that supports so many local people at often a very difficult time. For some time now I have been supporting them by cleaning the commercial bins free of charge at the Centre. It’s nice to be able to give a bit back.” Ben has decided to take this one stage further and give up some of his free time on the opening day of the new community centre, to raise some funds for the Stroke Club. Wash a Wheelie doesn’t offer a one-off clean on bins because this detracts from the great service he provides to his regular customers, however on

OPPORTUNITY… “ Saturday 5th July he’s breaking that rule. Anyone in the area who wants their bin cleaned can take it to Haregate community centre between 12pm and 3pm where Ben will give their bin a clean in return for a donation to the Stroke Club. Ben added: “Regular cleaning of your wheelie bin prevents a build up of germs and bacteria such as Salmonella, E-coli, and Legionella amongst others. This is exacerbated by the heat in summer months when flies make contact with your rubbish resulting in maggots, which is why we’ve waited until July to run this event.” The Stroke Club is a place for all those who have suffered from the effects of stroke and other life altering illnesses, or those just needing friendship and support. The group meets at Haregate Community Centre, 46 Queens Drive, Leek, where members benefit from support, friendship, social independence, activities and day trips. To find out more about the club, how to join, volunteer or donate, go along and speak to the volunteers or call the centre on Tel. 01538 398378. Mazda launches unique 25th anniversary edition MX-5

C

elebrating the 25th birthday of its iconic twoseat sportscar this year, Mazda is delighted to announce the launch of the MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0-litre 25th Anniversary Limited Edition, which goes on sale throughout the UK from 1 August. First revealed to the public on 9th February at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, the Mazda MX-5 caused a sensation. Reintroducing a category of vehicle that had become all but extinct by the early 70s, it was an instant hit on a global scale, far outstripping the company's own sales predictions. When global production reached 531,890 units in May 2000, the little Mazda was certified by Guinness World Records as the world's bestselling two-seater sports car in history. Total global production passed the 900,000 mark in February 2011, and the Mazda MX-5's Guinness certification was updated. Just 1000 individually numbered examples of the Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0-litre 25th

Anniversary Limited Edition will be built. It is a testament to Britain's enduring love affair with open-topped motoring that 750 of them will be made available to UK customers with number one being unveiled at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on 26 to 29th June. “To date, three generations of Mazda MX-5 have witnessed the release of over 43 Special Edition models in the UK since 1990,” said Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director of Mazda UK. “None, however, could be more significant to us than this 25th Anniversary Limited Edition, which marks such an important milestone for a car that single-handedly reintroduced the world to the pleasures of exhilarating and affordable open-topped motoring.” With a comprehensive equipment specification based on the Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0 litre Sport Tech Nav, the 25th Anniversary Limited Edition boasts a wealth of additional exterior and interior features unavailable on any other Mazda MX-5.

RECORD SALES KEEP LEAF AHEAD OF THE CLASS

T

here’s just no stopping the 100% electric Nissan LEAF. The practical and affordable family hatchback has continued to hit the right note with Britain’s drivers, shattering yet another sales record. Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show the Nissan LEAF powered to an impressive 630 sales during March, up 155% on March 2013 (247 sold), topping September 2013 (the previous record month) when 332 were sold. This remarkable result in plate-change March tops a record-breaking first quarter of 2014 during which sales of the LEAF hit 898, up 47% on quarter three 2013 (612 LEAFs sold) which held the previous sales record. The figures underline the LEAF’s position as the UK market leader and provide further evidence that

58 Leek Life July/August 2014

the British-built model’s class-leading range and running costs, coupled with its everyday usability, are keeping it well ahead of the chasing pack. In fact, the SMMT statistics reveal the Nissan LEAF outsold all other pure electric models combined by more than two-to-one. James Wright, Managing Director, Nissan Motor GB, said: ”The continued success of the Nissan LEAF comes as no surprise to those of us who have been involved with its development since the start. Designed from the wheels up as a 100% electric model, it blazed the trail for EV technology when it was launched and today it still leads the way. “As the LEAF becomes an increasingly familiar sight on the nation’s roads, word of mouth is spreading, and more and more drivers are being won over by its undeniable economic and environmental credentials.”

Improved quality and refinement for 2014 Subaru XV

T

he Subaru XV compact crossover has received a number of upgrades for 2014 that bring improvements to refinement, ride, handling, safety and cabin quality. The most significant improvements to the XV are found in petrol-engine models, with 2.0 litre models receiving suspension modifications to improve ride quality and a range of new valve-train components that reduce engine noise. NVH is also improved across the XV range – including 2.0-litre diesel models – with additional sound-proofing in the bulkhead to further insulate the cabin from engine noise. The electronic power steering system has been revised to improve stability and feel. A new inflating dynamic damper system reduces steering wheel and column vibration, while engineers have fine-tuned the system to provide more weight, greater straight-line steering feel and a more linear steering response. Safety has been improved with the addition of a

60 Leek Life July/August 2014

thicker, reshaped front suspension lower-arm and reinforcements around the base of the A-pillar, which yield further improvements in the XV’s fivestar Euro NCAP crash safety performance. With a score of 90%, the XV already has one of the highest Euro NCAP scores in the industry for child protection. Inside, the cabin has received a number of changes to improve the overall look and feel, with the addition of the traditional blue Subaru logo on the steering wheel, higher-quality silver surrounds housing the steering wheel buttons and heater controls, and new gloss-black switches to control the car’s air-conditioning system. The Subaru XV stands out in its sector by benefiting from permanent All-Wheel Drive as standard. The XV also boasts the highest ground clearance and is among the lightest vehicles in its class, aiding the car’s genuine off-road ability, while a low centre of gravity enhances on-road handling.

NEW TOYOTA AYGO: MORE STYLE, MORE CHOICE, MORE FUN

T

he new Toyota Aygo is a small car that offers customers a huge choice when it comes to making their car distinctively their own. Never before has a Toyota offered so many opportunities for personalisation, with a wealth of features inside and out that can be specified in different colours and finishes. From the new X-shape front end element that defines Aygo’s hip new look, to the alloy wheels, instrument panel and seats, owners can give their car its very own style. In spite of the huge number of possible permutations, with up to 10 interchangeable elements, customers will not face a long wait for their bespoke new Aygo to arrive, nor will they face huge extra cost. The customisation packs have been keenly priced and they are fitted by Toyota in the UK, to customer order, at a new hub set up at

64 Leek Life July/August 2014

Toyota Manufacturing UK’s Burnaston factory in Derbyshire. Customisation is just one aspect of the fresh, vibrant approach Toyota has taken with its new city car, with higher equipment specifications that include plenty of “big car” features, such as the new x-touch multimedia system with MirrorLink function for smart connection of mobile phones. New Aygo is also the first in its class to offer a rearview camera and it can be specified with Smart Entry and push button start. New Aygo is designed above all to be fun – to own and to drive – while maintaining its established high value price tag and running costs. New Aygo hits the road in the UK from 1 July with on-the-road prices from £8,595 – reduced to £7,995 with the benefit of a £600 customer saving offer.
