Enjoy Leek Life and embrace life in Leek this autumn

I

t is almost a given to say that the majority of people love the summer, but in an attempt to be optimistic I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that the impending autumn has just as much going for it. A bold statement perhaps, but when you hear about some of the exciting, innovative and creative events happening in and around the town in the coming months you may be inclined to agree. Leek really has the feeling like things are on the up at the moment, I was thrilled to hear the news that the town’s brand new hotel, the Premier Inn has put its weight behind one of Leek’s big forthcoming events as the main sponsor of the second Blues and Americana Festival happening in October. Already boasting a fantastic jam packed programme, organisers have had acts and venues clambering over themselves to be part of this wonderful event. Its great to see such support from the big companies as well as the independents which so often seem to do a lot of the leg work for these type of community festivities. It will be a great celebration of music and culture which is sure to help ease us through what can sometimes be a rather depressing transition from summer to autumn for people. And while the school holidays may be over we haven’t altogether forgotten the summer. In this issue we have all the highlights of this year’s fantastic Leek and District Show and a photo special featuring local school leavers enjoying their prom nights. Plus all the usual features and contributions from our regular columnists. So on a final note in my autumnal promotion lets not forget the wonderful surroundings in which we are so lucky to live, right in the heart of the stunning Staffordshire Moorlands countryside. I for one will be embracing the chance to get out the wellies and questionable knitwear to enjoy some bracing walks in the countryside and admire the beautiful array of colours the trees create during the changing of the seasons. Enjoy Leek Life and life in Leek this Autumn. Regards from myself and all the team here at Leek Life.

ooking the epitome of a true English rose, Rebecca Barks was escorted down the aisle of St Leonard’s Church in Ipstones by her father Andrew, on Saturday 14th June, on what played out to be one of the most special and perfect days of the young nurse’s life. As the eldest daughter of Helen and Andrew Barks of Ipstones, Rebecca, known more affectionately as Beccy to her friends and family, stunned onlookers and the awaiting congregation as she arrived at the quaint village church ready to wed her cricket mad fiance Shaun Hodkinson. Eagerly awaiting his brides arrival inside Shaun, the youngest son of Geoff and Linda Hodkinson of Leek, was provided with some moral support on the big day by his trusty best man, Ian Wentworth, and groomsmen Kieran Flanders and James Woodward.

The couple were then married in a traditional church ceremony by the local vicar Reverend Michael Evans. The blushing bride, opting for a classic Justin Alexander full skirt style gown with a beautifully detailed lace top, purchased from 7th Heaven Bridle in Congleton, was accompanied by her younger sister Sophie Barks and best friend Jessica Scragg as her bridesmaids. They wore full length rose pink Dessy dresses and held similar smaller versions of Beccy’s bridal bouquet. Pretty, country pink roses were the flower of choice for the bouquets, arranged and hand tied by Marj Potts, which not only matched perfectly with the bridesmaids’ dresses, but set off bride Beccy’s gown beautifully and tied the colour scheme of the men’s grey suits and mint green ties Leek Life September/October 2014 9

Following the service, the wedding party headed off up the road to enjoy the daytime and evening reception which followed in a marquee that had been put up in the bride’s grandparents field in the village. Joiner Shaun certainly took a hands on role with the wedding, helping with some of the finer details of the day including making all the table names and the table plan for the cricket themed reception, and more impressively even making his and Beccy’s own wedding cake. RECIPE FOR LIFE

Seasonal delights brighten up the darkening nights

I

t’s getting considerably cooler outside which can only mean one thing, it’s time for Mother Nature to prepare to hibernate and for eager cooks their cue to dust off their pie and casserole

dishes. Hearty warming food is most certainly the order of the day in Autumn with plenty of ingredients perfect for roasting and throwing into a stew. Pumpkins may hog the

limelight in October, but there is plenty of scrumtious seasonal fare, why not celebrate the game season with this simple but impressive recipe for Pheasant breasts braised in cider.

Pheasant breasts braised in cider Ingredients: 4 pheasant breasts (young hen breasts if possible as they won’t be so tough) 4 large rashers, lightly smoked bacon 500ml/17fl oz dry cider 5 shallots knob of butter 1 teaspoon of caster sugar 30g/1oz plain flour 100ml/7 tablespoons of full fat crème fraîche

Method: 1.Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. 2.Butter the pheasant breasts and then wrap in the bacon. Place in an ovenproof dish (so that they aren’t too cramped together) and then pop in the oven for 25 minutes. 3.After 25 minutes reduce the oven temperature to 170C/325F/Gas 3, pour 250ml/8 fl oz of the cider over the pheasant breasts, cover with a lid or tin foil, and return to the oven for another 60 minutes. 4.Towards the end of the cooking time for the pheasants, pour the remaining cider into a saucepan and cook until the volume of liquid has reduced by about half. 5.Thinly slice the shallots and cook very slowly in a little butter until soft. Then add the caster sugar

Serves: 4 time: Preparation s te u in m 30 e: Cooking tim rs u o h 2 1 to and continue to cook until lightly caramelised. Remove from the heat until ready to finish the sauce. 6.Check the pheasant breasts during the cooking time to ensure that they do not dry out and add more cider if necessary. 7.To finish the sauce, add the flour to the shallots, place the pan back on a gentle heat and mix together. You may need to add a little more butter at this stage if the shallots are very dry, but they shouldn't be. Now add the cider reduction and the crème fraîche and cook together over a low heat until the sauce starts to thicken. 8.Once ready to serve, slice each breast into about five slices and place on the plate still in the shape of the whole breast. Pour the sauce over the meat and serve. Leek Life September/October 2014 17

LEEK BLUES & AMERICANA FESTIVAL

Old friends, welcome new faces and partnerships for that ‘difficult’ second festival!

A

fter the unexpected success of last years' Leek Blues & Americana Festival the event returns this October for its second year. Taking place over five days from Wednesday 1st October to Sunday 5th, Leekblues, (the organising committee behind the festival) are delighted to announce that the town’s brand new Premier Inn hotel is this year's title sponsor. Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is also lending its support to the event which is equally engaged in promoting the town as much as celebrating the best of live Blues, Country, Americana and roots influenced music. Speaking to Leek Life, Leekblues committee member, Dave Swarbrook said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response from the many venues and sponsors across town, this year promises so much. We want to make every performer feel welcome as we work hard to put the spotlight on them and the town.” This year sees an increase in the number of hosting venues as more than 16 pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafés showcase local, national and international performers with the local Foxlowe Arts Centre playing host to one of the headline acts. The success of last years festival and the inclusion of the Leekblues Winter Warmer in February of this year helped to build a positive

reputation for the event, and as a consequence, many bands, and performers have sought to reach out to Leekblues for inclusion in this years event. 2014 sees lots of familiar local talent trading licks, lines and leads with musicians and performers new to the town, with over 35 acts already on the line up. Leekblues are passionate about the music that they promote, which is clear from the programme as Acoustic Roots go headstock to headstock with Electric shuffles. Barrel house boogie piano crosses keys with Cajun Violins and Accordions. There is a real diversity of sounds. Over the coming weeks Leekblues will introduce every artist, venue, sponsor and event via their website, and social media in the build up to the festival. As well as introducing new venues, creating great partnerships with local sponsors and the title sponsor, the festival has been able to reach out further afield to bring some of the best in the genre to the Moorlands. Particular highlights include the Nick Steed Blues Band on Wednesday at The Roebuck in Derby Street, while Festival partners, Biddulph ‘Up in Arms’ music club play host to Statesboro' Georgia's Brooks Williams performing with PJ Wright on the same night at Biddulph Arms. The Situation continue to highlight new,

original talent at the Old Central Club in Leek on the Saturday night with bands like Moitessier and Malthouse, while Cajun/Zydeco legends Elvis Fontenot play Sunday afternoon as part of the New Orleans Sunday at The Cock Inn, also in Derby Street. The headline act this year is the legendary boogie woogie blues pianist, Mike Sanchez. He'll be performing on Friday 3rd October at The Foxlowe Arts Centre. One of the most influential British blues performers of the last 30 years, having performed with Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Imelda May, Andy Fairweather-Low, Jools Holland and

Robert Plant to name but a few. Mike’s energetic style and ability to fuse with an audience, combined with his immense talent and knowledge of his chosen style make him one of the most respected artists of his generation. Mike will be bringing his band ‘The Portions’ along for what will be a night of rousing Rhythm and Blues. Tickets are available now from Foxlowe Arts Centre or from the website priced £12.50. Hunters increases dominance in Staffordshire with new office opening in Endon

H

unters, the UK’s fastest growing independent estate agency group, is delighted to announce the opening of their new office in Endon, Staffordshire. The launch at Endon, Hunters’ 2nd office in the area, follows the success of their Stoke on Trent Office. Due to open this autumn, the Endon office will be headed up by Kerry Smart, Director of Hunters Stoke on Trent. Kerry has extensive knowledge of the local property market, having worked in the area for 10 years and opened Hunters Stoke on Trent in 2013. Kerry is currently in the process of recruiting an ambitious team for the new office, one of which will be an apprentice, in line with the National Apprenticeship scheme. We are committed to finding local talent, helping to train them so that they reach their full potential through a well-structured apprenticeship program. Kerry Smart, Director at Hunters Endon comments: “I am proud to be opening my second office with Hunters and could not be more grateful for the excellent support I have received from them. The Hartshill, Stoke on Trent branch is now one of the leading estate agents in the area, with sales from the Endon area contributing to this success. With this in mind, we were keen to open a branch in this popular and desirable location to further our presence in the area. We pride ourselves on our

great customer service, and I plan to continue this ethos whilst creating a home for Hunters in the Endon area.” This is very exciting news for the Hunters network, “The Hunters brand continues to expand across the country at a rate of knots” explained Hunters Sales Director, Andrew Bushell who went on to say “we are the fastest growing independent estate agency network in the UK opening around 5 new branches every month. Over the course of the last few months we have opened branches across London, Herefordshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire. Further exciting times are ahead, with 30 branches due to open by November. The housing market is strong and confidence is high, so it’s a great time for new businesses to help support their local customers and offer the service that only Hunters branches can provide”. To find out more about Hunters and the Endon launch, visit them online at www.huntersnet.co.uk, call the team on 01782 626522 or visit the branch once we have opened at 144 Leek Road, Endon, ST9 9EW. We would be delighted to meet you and answer any questions you might have.

PROM NIGHT

SCHOOL LEAVERS ENJOY PROM NIGHT High school leavers have a ball

A

masked ball in the stately setting of Consall Hall gave a sophisticated edge to Leek High School’s annual prom night held at the end of the summer term. A total of 123 teenagers from Leek High were joined by students from co-located Meadows Special School for the momentous occasion celebrating the end of their compulsory school days. Transport was provided in all its forms, from a horse and cart to a stretch limousine. But, in true tradition, members of Waterhouses Young Farmers’ Club travelled by trusty tractor to the event. Sam Allcock, Ben Watson, Darren Prince , Rob Turnock and Simon Hambleton took just over half an hour to make the journey from Calton to Consall with car drivers forming a queue behind them. Organiser Miss Ann Burnett, Leek High’s head of Food Technology, said: “Everyone had a great time and a three course meal and disco was enjoyed by all. It was great to see all the lads so smartly turned out in their suits and the girls looked fabulous in their colourful prom dresses. “Although many students will return to Leek High to enter the sixth form this September, it was really a momentous occasion as many will go their separate ways now either by starting work or moving on to college courses.” Photos courtesy of Andrew Pickford of Lifetime Images.

PROM NIGHT

SCHOOL LEAVERS ENJOY PROM NIGHT From Westwood to Hollywood...

F

riday 4th July saw Westwood Year Eleven students put on their finest attire to attend their College Prom marking the completion of their GCSE’s, and for some, their time at Westwood College. The evening’s intermittent showers seemed to hold off for a short while allowing the young adults their chance to make a grand entrance down the historic Old Hall drive. The procession varied from ice cream vans, to glamorous sports cars, stunning horse drawn carriages and even some iconic vintage scooters. After making the most of the dry spell to pose for photos around Old Hall’s picturesque surroundings the prom guests made their way inside where they were greeted with welcome drinks in the reception and then made their way into the specially decorated hall for a buffet and disco. The DJ did a great job of filling the dance floor by playing crowd pleasers that even got a few members of staff dancing. The students really looked the part. The boys’ attire ranging from traditional black tie to those who put a modern twist on their outfits with fitted suits and trainers. As for the girls, there was a real variety of designer shoes and dresses, from the classic full prom dress to cocktail and maxi dresses. All looked stunning and a great night was had by all.

CENTRE STAGE THEATRE COMPANY

Group’s latest production set to take ‘Centre Stage’ A

mateur dramatic society, Centre Stage Theatre Company is returning to the stage this autumn with a gripping and heartfelt production. The curtain will go up on My Boy Jack by David Haig on Thursday 6th November with three performances and a Saturday matinee running until Saturday 8th November at Westwood Road First School. This two Act play directed by Centre Stage’s Judy Herbert tells the story of the involvement of author Rudyard Kipling’s family in the First World War, which this year commemorates 100 years since it began in 1914. In this fitting tribute performed by the local company, the first Act deals with Rudyard’s stubborn determination to get his myopic son, Jack, to war, followed by Jack’s predictably disastrous experiences in France. Act two deals with the family’s attempts to discover what has happened to Jack after he has been reported missing and the effects of their loss on the remaining family. It is a thought-provoking and very moving play. There are however also elements of humour in the play in the scenes with the Irish guards but these also hold a serious message about the position the soldiers found themselves in and the hopelessness of their situation.

28 Leek Life September/October 2014

Members of Centre Stage have been hard at work rehearsing for the play since September at Westwood Road and have a great cast lined up to bring the audience the powerful performance this production deserves. John Charlesworth will take to the stage as one of Britain’s most famous sons, Rudyard, Beth Birch is playing the role of his wife, Carrie, Lucy Baker as his daughter Elsie, and newcomer Chris Morrall, who studies at Westwood College, will be playing the title role of his son, Jack. Add to these Gordon Wainwright, Ben Childs and Brian Martin as the Irish Guards, Mike Egan as the Army doctor and another newcomer, Brian Bogie as Colonel Pottle promises audiences a great balance between experience and fresh talent. Tickets, which will be on sale nearer the time, are priced at £8 and will be available from Westwood Road Post Office, Over The Rainbow toy shop in Sheep Market or from the Ticket Secretary on Tel. 01538 382546. BALLET DANCER

sabella Webb was literally jumping for joy after winning a much sort after role with the English Youth Ballet. She danced in three performances of Coppellia, at The Plaza Theater in Stockport over the summer. The talented young dancer was selected at an audition in February from over 200 young hopefuls and gained the chance to dance alongside English Youth Ballet’s stunning international principal artists in a professional production, as well as gaining an insight into what life is like as a professional ballet dancer “The audition was really nerve wrecking,” said Isabella, “We had to perform different techniques in rows of ten, line by line and then again in rows of five. The worst thing was sitting waiting to see if Miss Lewis, (EYB Company Director) called your number, as there were only 100 places. It was a fantastic feeling when she did!” Following the audition there was an intensive ten day rehearsal process, which took place at 30 Leek Life September/October 2014

Stockport Grammar School and included the Principle Dancers. The rehearsals took place in three studios in the school where the dancers followed a complex timetable of rehearsals. Each rehearsal day started with a ballet class to warm-up and then different scenes of the ballet were rehearsed simultaneously in the three studios. The rehearsal day always finished with the full cast in the biggest studio showing each other what had been learnt that day. Isabella was cast in two roles; the first was as a Spanish Doll, where all the different dolls in the workshop came to life and also in the Night Hours scene. “It really was a fantastic experience and I learnt so much from the different teachers we had, they worked us very hard but we had lots of fun too” said Isabella. Australian principal ballerina, Amy Drew added: “The young dancers we worked with in Stockport had great energy and attack. Working in a professional environment gave the students a unique insight into life in a ballet company. Isabella is so lucky – I wish there had been something like EYB when I was training! I feel very privileged to be a principal with the EYB as I get to work with some of the UK’s most talented young dancers who I find incredibly inspiring.”

OBJECTION OVERRULED - A H OBJECTORS IN THE FIRST WOR

Q

uaker journalist and author David Boulton has accepted an invitation to speak in Leek on 24th September on the topical and interesting subject of Conscription and Conscience in the First World War. To mark the centenary of the start of WW1 he has published an enlarged edition of Objection Overruled, his history of the campaign groups and many individual conscientious objectors concerned with the First World War. Described by The Observer when first published in 1967 as ‘destined to become the

classic account the men who fought for the right to say no to war’, David will address an audience at the Foxlowe Arts Centre on Wednesday 24th September as part of the Centre’s series of talks at 7.30pm. Admission is free although there will be a voluntary bucket collection at the end. Not all Quakers by any means adhered to the Quaker testimony for peace. Nor were the majority of conscientious objectors Quakers. They included people of all faiths and no faith. Two Conservative Quaker MPs, Frank Harris and Alfred Bigland, enthusiastically supported

MOORLANDS HOME LINK

Helpers needed to make older lives less lonely

A

popular befriending scheme which helps older, housebound people in the Staffordshire Moorlands to combat loneliness is looking for more helpers. Volunteers from Moorlands Home Link will be meeting up for a coffee morning at The Foxlowe Arts Centre, in Leek Market Place, on Thursday 11th

September and the registered charity is inviting anyone interested in helping as a volunteer visitor to join them. Befriending Co-ordinator Diane Sellers explained: “We have a superb network of more than 100 helpers who give up an hour or so of their time each week to call in on our members for a cup of tea and a chat or to call

people on the phone. “Many members are housebound and have no family living nearby and our volunteers provide vital friendship and support but our numbers have grown rapidly and, with around 200 pensioners wanting company, there aren’t enough volunteer visitors to go round. “Befrienders are not expected to carry out domestic tasks or caring duties – the aim is purely social contact – and we provide lots of support.” Helpers are needed in Leek as well as surrounding areas including Endon. For more information on the befriending scheme, call in at The Foxlowe between 10am and 12pm on 11th September or contact coordinator Diane Sellers on Tel. 07888104048 or email at dianesellers@moorlandshomelin k.co.uk.

HISTORY OF CONSCIENTIOUS ORLD WAR EXPLORED the call to arms, while one of the four Liberal Quaker MPs, Joseph Pease, became a junior minister. Only three months after the outbreak of war Labour stalwart Fenner Brockway and philosopher and campaigner Bertrand Russell were leading lights in the formation of the NoConscription Fellowship. Once the initial enthusiasm for volunteering dried up they realised conscription would be necessary and indeed it was introduced at the beginning of 1916. In that year, Archibald Bodkin, prosecuting

conscientious objectors, complained: “War would become impossible if all men were to have the view that war was wrong.” This promises to be a fascinating talk full of interesting information and not only highlighting a significant, if numerically small, aspect of the trench warfare slaughter, there will emerge considerable food for thought. The First World War was ironically billed as the war to end all wars, but not until Bodkin’s observation comes true will we truely be free from war in the world. Leek Life September/October 2014 33

HOMES AND GARDENS

Don’t get hot under the collar t make sure your chimney is fire

U

K fire statistics show that each year on average over 30,000 houses have chimney fires. This will be largely due to not getting the chimney swept often enough or burning fuel that is inappropriate for the appliance and causing tar to build up in the chimney. Most insurance companies will no longer pay out for claims made due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a professional chimney sweep and a valid certificate of sweeping issued that is recognised by insurance companies. If the fire brigade is called out to a chimney fire and it is proven that the chimney has not been properly maintained, then the local council can bill you for the call out, which can be expensive! Use only recommended fuels for your

appliance and flue type (if you are unsure check your manufactures instructions, ask your stove supplier, or a National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) Sweep). Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gases. Regular sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Chimney Sweeping will also help to increase the efficiency of appliances. The frequency of Chimney sweeping will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel used, appliance, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, and the type of chimney you have. Your local NACS Chimney Sweep will be able to advise on the sweeping frequency during the

r this autumn re safe and ready appointment. Gas and oil flues will also need to be swept. It is essential that all flues are kept clean and clear of debris and vermin nests. It will also help with the prevention of chimney fires and even carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have just moved house, then it is important you have your chimney swept as soon as possible as you may not necessarily know when it was last cleaned properly by a professional Chimney Sweep. Always ensure you receive a NACS Certificate of Chimney Sweeping. Your Chimney Sweep will also provide advice on your Chimney, heating appliances, what fuels to use, and the best practice for fuel storage. ASK THE EXPERT

Getting the building work done I f you have finally decided that the house you are living in is too small, or is not arranged internally to suit your requirements and you want to extend or alter the house in some way. The work to be done is beyond your average Sunday DIY project and you need to employ somebody to do the work for you. Having building work done can be difficult or stressful and may last a number of weeks. You need to be clear about what you want, if you are inviting a few builders around to quote for the work you want, make sure that you don’t change your mind during the process if one of the builders gives you a different idea that you like, or at least if you do – make sure previous visitors are aware of the change and can amend their quotes accordingly. It is always better to at least have a written description, or a simple drawing, to demonstrate the work you want. I am regularly passed work by builders who visit a property to discuss pricing work with customers only having a vague idea of what they want. If you have a detailed drawing to scale with everything you want to be done, then each builder knows exactly what to price for. Choosing the right builder is important, rather than using the yellow pages to find one, have a drive around the area to see which builder is actively working in your area, a decent builder will display a sign board outside to advertise they are open for business and are proud of their work and looking for more – perhaps you could make contact with the home owner to ask how the work has gone. No amount of advertising can beat a recommendation. The works you are considering to have carried out will most likely need to meet current Building Regulations, or possibly Planning permission for extensions. If in doubt – check. Don’t automatically take the word of the builder that you don’t need to comply. A good source of inspiration for the fixtures and fittings for your home can be found at the home improvement exhibitions such as the Grand

36 Leek Life September/October 2014

Designs Live or the National Homebuilding and Renovating Show. A number of my clients have visited them and came back buzzing having chosen the kitchen, fireplace, window styles they like. I will be on the ‘ask the expert’ stand at the NEC on Sunday 12th October at the Grand Designs Live exhibition, where visitors can book time to discuss their scheme, bringing sketches, photos, even Architects plans to various aspects of their projects, earlier this year I was at a similar event in March and discussed 14 different projects with visitors to the show. If however you can’t make it down to the NEC why not get in touch with Andrew via Leek Life if you have a question, query or would like more information and advice about a specific issue to do with a home improvement project or other building development. You can write to Andrew with any planning or architectural questions via email at life@timesandecho.co.uk where he will try and answer them in the next November/December issue of Leek Life. MOTORING

Don’t let car tax be taxing

F

rom 1st October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed on a vehicle windscreen. There is a video available (Goodbye to the tax disc) which explains that a tax disc will no longer be issued from 1st October 2014. You can watch the video on the DVLA YouTube channel. You can apply online to tax or SORN your vehicle using your 16 digit reference number from your vehicle tax renewal reminder (V11) or 11 digit reference number from your log book (V5C). What this means to you: To drive or keep a vehicle on the road you will still need to get vehicle tax and DVLA will still send you a renewal reminder when your vehicle tax is due to expire. This applies to all types of vehicles including those that are exempt from payment of vehicle tax. Buying a vehicle: From 1st October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle. You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration

certificate (V5C) online or by phone - 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Alternatively, you may wish to visit a Post Office® branch. MOTORING

Improved quality and refinement for 2014 Subaru XV

T

he Subaru XV compact crossover has received a number of upgrades for 2014 that bring improvements to refinement, ride, handling, safety and cabin quality. The most significant improvements to the XV are found in petrol-engine models, with 2.0 litre models receiving suspension modifications to improve ride quality and a range of new valve-train components that reduce engine noise. NVH is also improved across the XV range – including 2.0-litre diesel models – with additional sound-proofing in the bulkhead to further insulate the cabin from engine noise. The electronic power steering system has been revised to improve stability and feel. A new inflating dynamic damper system reduces steering wheel and column vibration, while engineers have fine-tuned the system to provide more weight, greater straight-line steering feel and a more linear steering response. Safety has been improved with the addition of a

40 Leek Life September/October 2014

thicker, reshaped front suspension lower-arm and reinforcements around the base of the A-pillar, which yield further improvements in the XV’s fivestar Euro NCAP crash safety performance. With a score of 90%, the XV already has one of the highest Euro NCAP scores in the industry for child protection. Inside, the cabin has received a number of changes to improve the overall look and feel, with the addition of the traditional blue Subaru logo on the steering wheel, higher-quality silver surrounds housing the steering wheel buttons and heater controls, and new gloss-black switches to control the car’s air-conditioning system. The Subaru XV stands out in its sector by benefiting from permanent All-Wheel Drive as standard. The XV also boasts the highest ground clearance and is among the lightest vehicles in its class, aiding the car’s genuine off-road ability, while a low centre of gravity enhances on-road handling.
