A WORD FROM

the editor

Spring is in the air and everyone’s feeling that tad more sprightly. Following some truly positive feedback, we have decided to extend our focus on sports to this issue. It truly seems like there is a lot more awareness about fitness in general, which as far as I’m concerned spells only great things, given our constantly dismal performance in the obesity and fitness stakes. This month we meet some more Determinati stars – Determinati, for those who missed our first interview, sees Claire Agius Ordway bring together some of Malta’s finest athletes in a groundbreaking reality TV show. The exclusive interviews they are giving Sunday Circle are truly inspirational. Just as inspirational is Darrin Vandit’s story. Darren is a runner, but not just any runner. Born with one arm, he has managed

to achieve a lot more than other people with all limbs. If this story doesn’t inspire you to get off the couch and do something...well, I don’t know what will. Then there’s Maria Vella-Galea, a lady who manages to combine running triathlons at Ironman level, organising athletic events and...wait for it... running a specialist sports marketing enterprise. You’d think she is superwoman, but she claims it’s nothing others can’t achieve with the right determination and commitment. Finally, let’s not forget boxer Josef Mizzi, another sportsman who shares his secrets with us, this time focusing on good nutrition and the best lifestyle to follow for those who want to achieve fitness – not necessarily at professional level, of course, but even simply to maintain a good level of health.

But moving away from sports, our cover lady this month is none other than Emma Muscat – young songstress who is making waves with her heartfelt pop. Emma shares her views about music; let it not be said that young people don’t take anything seriously nowadays. On the nostalgia front, do check out the interview with Diana Mackintosh, mother to the world-famous theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh. She shares her wartime memories with us, with particular reference to that iconic couple Christina and Warby. There’s a lot more to enjoy this month: fashion, which takes us striding stylishly into spring with a selection of colourful and casual outfits. There’s arts, beauty, paparazzi shots and a more. Welcome to spring, hope you enjoy the read!

Singing from your soul AT A MERE 18 YEARS OF AGE, EMMA MUSCAT’S SELF-PENNED MUSIC IS ALREADY MAKING WAVES ON LOCAL CHARTS. ANNA-MARIE GALEA FINDS OUT MORE ABOUT THE LATEST SINGING SENSATION TO HIT MALTA.

Born into a musical family, there was little doubt that Emma would grow up to be a musician: “My grandfather and mother are both accomplished pianists and, in fact, I started playing the piano at the age of six. I took to it immediately and while some might feel wary of performing, I’ve always enjoyed taking part in the performing arts sector. It became so obvious to my tutors that I loved singing and performing that they would give me a lot of solo parts. I think the show that I enjoyed performing the most in when I was younger has to be the Sound of Music.” Despite Emma’s very young age (she turns 18 this year), she has managed to squeeze much into her musical career: “I’m sitting for my Grade 8 piano exams and the amount of practice that I have put into that has definitely been instrumental in helping me with my song writing. When it comes to the song-writing itself, I usually work on the melody first and then develop the lyrics accordingly.” Indeed, all of Emma’s pieces are

COVER STORY

As long as I’m doing something music-related, I know that I’ll be happy unique not only in the way that she composes them, but also because she always injects her own feelings and experiences into each one: “I think that there is no better music than that which comes from the heart and, in order for me to be able to do that, I really need to feel strongly about what I’m singing about. “When Alone was produced at the end of last year, it was a somewhat difficult time for me because I felt really let down by others. Ultimately, Alone was about how to deal with such situations. When you’re young you can be naïve and music has really helped me to cope and get through hard situations.” So can we expect a similar vein from Without You, which is to be released at the end of March? “Yes, most definitely. As the name suggests, Without You is all about the difficulty of being apart from someone you care about and the pain caused by distance. Like I did with Alone, I’ve really focused on the feelings you experience in such a situation.” With her obvious focus on music with feeling, it is little wonder that Emma counts Alicia Keyes, Aretha Franklin and Freddy Mercury as some of her icons: “When it comes to performing, I really love artists that are able to interact with their crowds at a deep level. One of my dreams is to perform with Coldplay: lead singer Chris Martin is pretty unbeatable when it comes to crowd interaction and tight interaction with his own band. I’m also in awe at vocal range of some singers on the music scene at the moment; Ariana Grande, for example, is not only a great entertainer but her voice and the way she is able to adapt her vocal style never cease to amaze me.”

There is a new wave of talented Maltese film-makers coming through mark my words. Watch Rebecca Cremona’s movie Simshar, a wonderful piece and a sign of things to come!” We sit back and sip on our coffee. I decide to steer our discussion away from the US and back to the country of his birth. Joseph’s eyes light up. “Malta is the jewel of my heart and has benefits the average American can only dream of. Malta has accessible healthcare, high employment and a low crime rate. She has the sea, the food, the pastizzi and the weather. It really is such a great place to live.” At the mention of food, I ask if he’s ever had a fenkata (rabbit) in the US. He laughs out loud. “Good Lord, no. In Malta they breed the rabbits with great care until they’re fat, tender and tasty. Here they’re wild. It’s not the same thing at all.” Keeping the conversation light, I ask him if he has heard of Freddie Portelli and whether he’s a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest. “Yeah, I know Freddie Portelli, he has the big sideburns right? I’ve known him since I was a kid.” I’m impressed. “And yes, I tune into Eurovision on my Apple TV. I watched it last year, in fact. I’m lucky I can watch Maltese television all the time nowadays. It takes me back to being on a couch with Mum at our house in Santa Venera, when I was a kid.” As we wrap up the interview I ask for his three must-see American destinations. “Well, you have to go to New York. It really is one of the greatest cities on earth! And the giant redwoods in Northern California are absolutely breathtaking, you must see those.” He stops for a moment and ponders his final answer. “You know, I’d have to say go to Texas. I have found Texans to be among the friendliest people I’ve had the pleasure to meet in the US. I mean it, Texas has always been great to me when I’ve visited. But the wonderful thing about America is that she is beautiful. You can find something new to see every single day.” We get up to leave. “I miss my family in Malta.” He shrugs. “My old friends in the neighbourhood. The tranquillity of the island. My anxiety reduces as soon as I arrive there. My 16-year-old daughter feels it as well. We shake hands and agree to meet for a beer another time. “One last thing, Joseph,” I say. “American football or soccer? Which do you prefer?” He smiles and pulls up the collar of his coat. “Ejja man, Spartans ta.” 20 Sunday Circle ∫ APRIL 2017

One of my jobs was to pay the editorial contributors, so I hit upon a bright idea. I started writing the stories myself instead, under a pseudonym that I can’t remember. I showed them to my boss, who was quite impressed. And so I started paying myself as contributor too, and they never found out it was me. I owned up to Dad, but I told him not to tell Mabel. I worked there for a number of years and, of course, I’d get all the admirers and suitors waiting for me. One day Mabel came in and asked why there were all those young men gathered there. Antonella Chouhall athletics When did you take up your sport? I started really by coincidence, I always loved sport then one day we had a sports day event at work and I decided to go take part. Apparently, I did well and a club contacted me to start training. That’s when it all started. What has been the biggest highlight? I have broken a number of records, but the most important one was the Discus one. There was also the time when I won the Swiss club’s league A in the discus, my first ever medal for our shores. Last year the European Masters in Ancona were another highlight; I won silver in the discus. And the biggest challenge of your sport? Time is my biggest challenge to manage to do the sport. Apart from injuries, of course. Why did you say yes to Determinati? We make a lot of sacrifices for our sport and people have no idea what we go through to achieve what we achieve. Determinati shows the real picture. It’s like showing a behind-the-scenes peek in a professional manner. What’s next? It will be a full year of athletics, hopefully including the San Marino GSSE and European Masters.

Rachid Chouhall athletics When did you take up your sport? I was 13-years-old and a boy challenged me to race against him, there and then in the street. I beat him and, since he was already an athlete, he told me to take it seriously since I was pretty good. What has been the biggest highlight? I have two, really. My first finals in the Commonwealth Games in 2002 in Manchester, where I managed to qualify for the long jump final. And winning gold in the long jump in the Small Nations Games in Malta in 2003. Apart from being the first ever gold in the individual in athletics, it was the year when my daughter Sarah was born and I took her with me on the podium. And the biggest challenge of your sport? Managing to do it all while staying away from injuries. Why did you say yes to Determinati? Determinati is not your typical programme, where you just get the results of a competition. It tells the story and the sacrifices behind it. What’s next? I hope to make the GSSE Team and European Masters in Aaurhus.

Yasmin Zammit Stevens weightlifting When did you take up your sport? I started weightlifting early in 2016. Before, that I was introduced to the weightlifting movements through crossfit classes I had been doing for a few months before. What has been the biggest highlight? This year has really been incredible and there were way too many highlights to pick just one. I competed at some major competitions at Europeans and Commonwealth, and I was also nominated for SportWoman of the Year. And the biggest challenge of your sport? Mental strength. Staying fully concentrated and motivated 24 on seven. Why did you say yes to Determinati? I think the whole idea behind the programme is great. I love that they’re giving us exposure and showing people just how hard Maltese athletes have to work. What most people don’t understand is that, unlike other bigger countries, in Malta you do a sport only for your own satisfaction. Most of us don’t get paid for what we do, if anything we sacrifice work to train. We do this because we are so passionate about our sport and because we want to make our small Island proud. I love that people are going to get to watch each athletes story and live through a day with us to truly see what our life is like. What’s next? A bit over a year in the sport has really been eventful. I hope to make Malta proud by achieving even better results than 2017. This is really just the beginning!

Gary Giordimaina wrestling When did you take up your sport? Ever since I was very young I used to see my father go to wrestling sessions, so it was only a matter of time until I started tagging along. Eventually, at around the age of six, I took up the sport myself and I must say I’ve never looked back. What has been the biggest highlight? Every competition has its special moments that I’ll cherish forever but, without a doubt my biggest achievements have been winning the Gold medal at the Mediterranean and Commonwealth championships. And the biggest challenge of your sport? Coming from a country where wrestling is very small has made it very tough to keep up with countries that are very strong in the sport. Compared to other countries I have very few training partners, few resources, lack of sponsors and lack of local competitions and training camps. This means that in order for me to keep up with the best I have to travel a lot and make sure to keep myself properly motivated. Why did you say yes to Determinati? To be chosen for such an incredible project is already a huge honour for me. From day one, Claire has always believed in me, and when she gave me the chance to show people what it means to be a wrestler, I couldn’t say no. What’s next? My main target for some time has been preparing hard for next year’s Mediterranean and Commonwealth Games to bring home yet another good result!

SPORTS SPECIAL

Andre Schembri professional footballer When did you take up your sport? I was still three years old when I started playing football. Football runs into the family as my grandfather, my father and my uncles all played football. I had no choice but to choose football! Jokes apart, football is my passion and although it is my profession I can’t imagine living without it. What has been the biggest highlight so far, for you? The biggest highlight was when the national team won 2-1 against Hungary in the 2006 European Championship Qualifying and I scored both goals which ended a 13 year wait for a competitive win. Besides, this game helped me to start my career abroad because a few months later, I signed my first professional contract with Eintracht Braunschweig in Germany. What can you tell us about your football career abroad? Playing professional football abroad is a big challenge. Although training is only two hours a day one has to dedicate the remaining hours of the day eating healthy and resting in order to recover fully for the next training session and also for the weekly games. The biggest challenge in football is to win your place in the first 11. Every training session is a big challenge, because one has to compete against his teammates and prove himself to the coach that he deserves to play in the upcoming games. Why did you say yes to Determinati? The best thing one can do in life is to inspire someone else. Determinati is a program which inspires passion, creativity and commitment to its viewers. It focuses on the lives of athletes; their motivation to achieve their dreams and their determination to overcome various challenges they may encounter. What’s next? When my football career ends I would like to start a new career in coaching and to help and export Maltese footballers abroad. What is your advice to up-and-coming footballers? My advice to young footballers is to dream big and to maximise their potential.

Sana Grillo gymnast When did you take up your sport? I started training gymnastics when I was eight years old, back in 2008. What has been the biggest highlight? I would choose COJI 2016. This was my O’level exam year, when I had to stretch above and beyond my limits. I placed third overall and winning a gold medal on beam plus and obtained good Matsec results. What is the biggest challenge of your sport? Fear is probably one of the biggest mental challenges facing a gymnast. Becoming a mentally tough gymnast means that you need to learn how to move towards and master this fear. Gymnastics is a sport with extremely complex movements, in which body control and athleticism is demonstrated at the highest level. How do you manage to combine sports and studies? Is it really possible? Do you give priority to one area over another? Personally, study and sport are of equal importance. By time I learnt how to prioritise depending on the situation. Time management is essential to adjust these priorities accordingly. Why did you say yes to Determinati? When I was first approached, I saw is as another opportunity into my career. After being interviewed by Claire Agius Ordway I realised how much this programme is needed in Malta. Firstly, to encourage athletes that with determination and hard work, success is not impossible. Secondly, to send a message to all parents that having their child involved in such a committed lifestyle, through sports and school, they can develop a high level of self-discipline that will help in the building foundations for a good future. What’s next? My next step is to improve and learn further skills and to compete in major games such as the Common Wealth Games and the European Games. APRIL 2017 ∫ Sunday Circle 35

Roderick Attard crossfit When did you take up your sport? Coming from a diverse background in sports backgrounds, such as regatta rowing and playing professional rugby abroad, I got to discover different training methods. Four years ago, together with my training buddy we opened The Pit and we adapted a training concept that is quite raw in Malta. Since then I became a Crossfit athlete and started taking part in crossfit competitions and throwdowns. What has been the biggest highlight? Every single cap I played for Malta in the rugby league. I have also coached and rowed for Malta in an international regatta in Piediluco, where we won bronze. There was also the time I got signed as a professional rugby league player for Gateshead Thunder, in Newcastle and qualifying for the finals of the Crossfit International Throwdowns and going on the podium in a local crossfit throwdown. And the biggest challenge of your sport? Time management and not to overdo it, otherwise you end up over-trained. Why did you say yes to Determinati? Determinati is the programme that is going to give a taste to the public of what a dedicated athlete goes through every day. I am confident that people will appreciate more the athlete’s journey to competition day. To promote crossfit and make people aware that it is for everyone. For elite athletes who want to improve their fitness levels and be at their best fitness level in their game, and to all those people who never trained and wish to start. What’s next? As an athlete, qualifying for team events and getting into the finals of international throwdowns this year. As a coach, recruiting a youngster and forging him into a crossfit games athlete.

Dorianne ATTARD Crossfit When did you take up your sport? I started Crossfit in 2012 when my husband and his friend opened a gym. Before that I played rugby for nine years with the Kavallieri women’s team, during which time I was part of the national 7’s team and represented Malta in various countries. During my teen years I used to play netball with the school team and loved running on my free days. What has been the biggest highlight? Participating in competitions both locally and abroad. I had a satisfying career in rugby, coming second and third in the European 7’s Cup, and with the Kavallieri women’s team we won the local league for several consecutive years. After a year of training in Crossfit I placed 2nd in the local Rock Throwdown competition and this year my partner Pamela and I managed to get 1st place in the Team division. And the biggest challenge of your sport? The biggest challenge for me is that it involves many different disciplines, and you must be capable of and practice all the different movements that you are required to perform. You must also constantly work on your weakness but never overlook/neglect your strengths. I couldn’t even do one pull up and a 20kg bar used to feel heavy. Now, pull ups and barbell exercises are my favourite movements. Why did you say yes to Determinati? People will get to know more about our sport and maybe get involved in it. The variety of things you can do means that it will never get boring, and you meet new people of all ages and from different backgrounds. What’s next? My next competition will be in July in Italy, where I will be part of a team. For myself, I plan to keep on training hard, so that I will be well prepared for all the challenges that may come our way. I will also continue to dedicate time to coaching others, to help them reach the level that they desire and to make them feel good about themselves both during training and in everyday life.

The agony and the ecstasy We have all been there – admiring an athlete’s or a sportsperson’s success and feeling just a small twinge of envy. How do they do it? All those hours of training, all that sacrifice, the physical ordeals… surely, they must be superhuman! These sort of questions are what inspired the birth of Determinati, a reality sports programme that is the brainchild of Claire Agius Ordway. You could call Determinati a reality show, but that would not be doing it full justice. Determinati goes beyond that, gathering together a crew of Malta’s top athletes who will keep the viewers glued to their TV screens as we accompany them on a journey of endurance, competition, setbacks and triumphs. “The programme takes us behind-the-scenes of what the life of a professional athlete looks like, giving us a better understanding of the trials these people go through,” says Claire,

HOLLAND & BARRETT’S BRAND AMBASSADOR Josef Mizzi SHARES HIS PHILOSOPHY FOR NUTRITION WHEN PUSHING HIS BODY TO ITS LIMITS.

How do you describe yourself? I consider myself to have a very outgoing and positive personality. Is Malta equipped with good running routes? Compared to other places I have been abroad, not really. Sadly we are full of cars, broken down roads, or polluted industrial areas. During the weekend I love running on the southern and western area of the island, where traffic is much less.

What about those who would like to try their luck at a first time marathon. What is your advice? The marathon humbles you. That’s for starters. If you want to run a marathon just for fun, that’s one thing. Running a marathon but heading with a timed target is a different ball game. There are many physiological and mental elements which an athlete passes through during a marathon and one must be tough as nails mentally and they are physically. For someone embarking towards the 42.195k journey, my advice is to allow ample time for proper build up, slowly increasing the mileage and introduce training cycles with one low-key week within the cycle after say four to five weeks (according to the level of the athlete.) It is also very important to introduce proper nutrition, allow ample rest and, something which many neglect, take the easy days, easy. Crossing the finishing line of the marathon was one of the most emotional and self-rewarding moments in my whole life. I raced the marathon not competitively but to achieve a qualification time which during that period was quite comfortable so I still need to experience the proper marathon where I hope to finish hands on my knees but with a permanent smile on my face only after crossing the finishing line. The club offers services for marathon coaching and, in fact, we currently have two athletes who will be running the Valencia Marathon later on this year.

Would you say that in Malta those who suffer from a disability are encouraged to continue living their lifestyle as much as possible? Or do we still have a long way to go? SPORTS SPECIAL

How popular is sport for women in Malta? Do you see a difference between men and women’s approach? Since I have been practicing sport I have seen an increase in female participation, though I firmly believe that there could be a larger take up. Once the misconception of requiring super human effort is removed, then I am sure that women would be encouraged to take up a sport. And taking up a sport does not necessarily mean competing, as some people do not like the added pressure a race can give. I think men and women can be equally committed, competitive and resilient, especially since resources are somewhat limited at times. While the general perception is that men might take a tougher approach I have seen some very tough women on the field.

You successfully combined taking part in sports with actually organising events: how is the approach to each area different? Since I regularly take part in a variety of races and competitions – triathlon, equestrian, cycling, swimming and running I can understand the needs and expectations of an athlete – this understanding and experience has helped me when transferring this know-how to the organisations I work with. The selection of a race route or course, the layout of the transition area in the case of triathlon, the experience before and after the race, safety issues and the little details such as the goody bag, finishers’ medal, t-shirt, spectator accessibility and so forth – these all contribute to the

In general cyclists are not out there to frustrate drivers. The majority are drivers themselves. experience of the athlete. Ensuring that family, friends and the public wishing to follow a race or event have good access points where they can see the action – this not only gives more exposure to the sport but also creates a great atmosphere for the competing athletes.

What are the challenges of each? As an athlete, the challenges vary from ensuring that your training programme is suited for what you are training for, getting your nutrition right – before and during the race as well as avoiding injuries that will set you back. Scheduling training with a busy work load and at the same time ensuring that enough rest is factored in to recover properly for the next training session can be challenging. On race day, the main challenges are maintaining focus, keeping to the race route and cut off times. From the organisational point of view, the challenges can be overwhelming and, perhaps, more stressful than actually taking part in a race. The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to organise an event is a never-ending to do list, which includes obtaining the necessary permits and support from the authorities. I cannot not mention that I APRIL 2017 ∫ Sunday Circle 49

work with some very supportive people within the police force, transport authorities and local councils – in fact without their support such events would not be possible. It is very encouraging to see the interest that these authorities show; it is not limited to just issuing a permit but most of them do go the extra mile to ensure that it is not just a matter of issuing a permit but ensuring a safe and pleasant race environment for athletes. Safety is a major headache for organisers – making sure that all athletes are safe during the various phases of the race is an absolute priority.

What about the non-participating public? Are people more accepting of race requirements on the road? We do need support, respect and tolerance from the general public – naturally this is not a one sided aspect but has to go both ways. We should be watching out for each other – for example if you see a cyclist on the side of the road, it’s good to keep a safe distance and to remember that cyclists are more vulnerable than drivers safely ensconced in their cars. Also, sometimes driving on the side of the road is not possible due to debris – broken glass, water grilles. There are some minor, unfortunate exceptions, of course, but in general cyclists are not out there to frustrate drivers. The majority are drivers themselves.

If time is not on your side, I believe that even just half an hour a day of exercise can be achieved by anyone Many say they have no time to practice a sport. As someone with a busy lifestyle who proves this wrong, how do you react to this? It all boils down to planning discipline. With the Maltese climate being what it is and the heat index reaching the higher levels even in the dead of winter, it is hardly any wonder that metastatic melanoma – or, skin cancer, to give it its layman’s term – is a very real cause for worry. Watercourse plants require a good underground system of roots in order to maintain stability in water. One of the most common plants to colonise valleys is the giant reed (Scientific: Arundo donax; Maltese: il-qasba l-kbira). It tends to form extensive reed beds which slow the water current and filter the water from nutrients. At the mouth of valley watercourses, where freshwater from the watercourse meets the sea, the type of reed that is more commonly found is the common reed (Scientific: Phragmites australis; Maltese: l-għaljun). pictus pictus; Maltese: iż-żrinġ), and the endemic Maltese freshwater crab (Scientific: Potamon fluviatile lanfrancoi; Maltese: il-qabru), known from Malta and nowhere else in the world. This crab needs a supply of freshwater all year round and since its habitat is very limited, it has become very rare, with a restricted distribution. A large variety of insect and other invertebrate fauna also thrive in local watercourses, such as dragonflies and damselflies, semi-aquatic grasshoppers, aquatic and semi-aquatic beetles, small crustaceans, freshwater snails, pea mussels (arzell tal-ilma ħelu) and many others. Some of these are only found in watercourses and a few are only known from one or two localities in the Maltese Islands. One of the instruments used to protect and manage waterbodies, including selected watercourses, is the second Water Catchment

Maltese Freshwater Crab

Management Plan which addresses pressures created by human activity on these water-related ecosystems and identifies actions for protection of such rare sites in our islands. As part of Malta’s natural heritage, the unique nature of watercourses and the rarity of the species inhabiting them, form part of our natual heritage and rightfully merit not only the protection offered by legislation, but also the respect and nurturing by each and every one of us.

As raw as it gets HE IS KNOWN FOR APPROACHING HIS ART FROM A CONTROVERSIAL ANGLE BUT, AS PHOTOGRAPHER STEVEN LEVI VELLA TELLS ANNA MARIE GALEA, IT’S MORE ABOUT HONESTY THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

He’s collaborated with musicians as diverse as Airport Impressions, Crux and Amber and photographed multiple fashion spreads, as well as headlining two controversial exhibitions. And he’s done all this before turning 24. However, despite his success and talent for all things media, Steven Levi Vella wasn’t always as taken with film and photography as he is now. “I originally wanted to get into law. Ironically, I caught the photography bug really badly when I was doing a school project. Looking back though, creation and interpretation have always been a really big part of me. I experimented with cameras and made MP4 videos when I was young and, although at the time I didn’t think much of it, now that I’m older I realise that my need to create was always something very integral to my being. “In many ways, I feel that this need is something which both nature and nurture have contributed towards. My mother and father are both extremely creative and watching my dad and the way he built things and found interesting solutions to problems has definitely influenced me. I’ve always been in awe at how good he was with his hands. My parents’ way of thinking has definitely been instrumental in encouraging me down my chosen path.” On realising that the legal profession was not for him, Vella enrolled at Mcast and spent his degree years studying and working simultaneously. “The fact that I had to deal with people from such a young age moulded me, but it also gave me a great sense of freedom. I believe that creativity can be fostered through the people you choose to surround yourself with; they can really nurture you and help you see the world in a different way. I believe that it is the photographer’s job to be able to capture the best his subjects have to offer and this can only be done if you are able to make them feel at ease, comfortable with themselves.” Vella relies on both his instincts, as well as the different facets of his personal experiences when directing videos and taking photos.

“For example, for Crux’s latest video, Smiling Man, I was deeply inspired by the Orlando shootings and people’s reactions. I focused a lot on the concept of smiling and how something which was once so spontaneous has become a device through which people can conceal their true feelings. Thanks to social media, many people are going through their lives pretending to be constantly happy and having a good time. It’s a pretty depressing and sobering thought to realise that many simply live to please society and show off their supposed happiness because they don’t want to be judged by others. “On the other hand, when I filmed Airport Impressions’ music video for Mariette, I focused on the theme of motherhood and on making something my own mum could be part of. My maternal grandmother died when my mother was still very young and I wanted to bear witness to that. Many people were moved by this particular video and there’s nothing more rewarding than being able to move people to emotion with your work.” So, how does he pick the subjects for his photos? “There is something uniquely beautiful in each and every person and I love the process of discovering what it is. Sometimes it’s the way they walk, or a simple gesture they make with their hands. But, in that moment that I uncover it, I know how and in what way I would want that person to pose for me to get the best out of the uniqueness I have identified. I suppose you could say that I’m obsessed with the unseen.” He adds that, with both his solo exhibitions – titled Porn Sessions and Black Porn, he wasn’t concentrating on nudity, but rather on capturing those rare moments where the person comes alive for the camera in his own very individual way. Black Porn, he adds, was particularly spontaneous and intense. The project was executed over two hectic months, during which time

Steven lived and breathed it. Nothing was pre-planned and the photographer went out of my way to make sure that the photos were taken with as few inhibitions as possible. “My models and I would go out at night, party and then basically decide where the night would take us, creatively. Although some might consider this method to be somewhat unorthodox, I wanted everything to be as raw as possible. The focus wasn’t just on making a pretty picture, but ultimately, a real one.” While Steven doesn’t intentionally court controversy, he doesn’t shut the door on it either. “People might not always understand what it is I’m trying to do but, to be honest, I’m not interested in pleasing everyone. I would much rather have 50 people that are able to understand my vision than a 100 that don’t. I believe in having an intimacy with my followers which you can only achieve through authenticity. I’m not here to make people feel comfortable; I’m here to be me.”
