As more cranes have started appearing in Spinola Road, St Julian’s, locals fear that the iconic Cat Village – which has offered food and shelter to countless cats through past decades – will soon come to an end. the age of 12, where she studied music at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, which counts Dame Julie Andrews as one of its alumni. While there, Chris and Davinia’s mum, Fiona, would visit her regularly. “Daddy and mummy were separated already at this point, but they both came to visit often,” Davinia explains. “I was always close to mummy, but when daddy did come, I treasured it and I would be counting down the days particularly as he travelled so much while my sister, Natasha, and I were growing up.” Chris had actually come out as gay to his family three years before, when Davinia was nine and Natasha was 10. Understandably, this changed the dynamic that the family had been accustomed to, but it actually brought the whole family closer as they rediscovered each other through a new understanding of what the other person needed. “Natasha and I had to deal with it very quickly at a young age,” Davinia continues. “But I got to know his real self after he came out, I guess, and that’s what made us so close. Nat and I support it because of what we’d been through as a family. And I believe everyone should accept it.
Of course, when he came out and my parents separated, it felt like the world was ending, but now it’s the norm and I’m very happy that both him and mummy are happy “When daddy came out, it wasn’t as easy as it is today for someone to come out, and going through that and being bullied at school because of it, made us realise how much we should champion the cause and, today, I’m a big supporter of Pride. Moreover, we were lucky, as daddy and mummy remained really close friends, which is incredibly nice.” A few years later, Chris decided to retire from his role in Global Capital, and focused more on spending time with his family – whether it’s travelling (Chris takes Davinia and Natasha on an annual trip to Capri every summer) or watching TV together in the evening (their favourite series are The Good Wife and Sense8). This year, Chris and his two daughters will be spending it with Chris’s parents, who are both in their 90s. Then, for tea-time, they’ll all head to Fiona’s house to spend the rest of the day with the extended family. When I ask them what it will involve, it’s family, fun and food that are mentioned. “You know, it’s funny. My first memory of daddy is him bringing us a box of Millie’s Cookies from abroad. We were in Madliena and he got one of these long boxes with muffins and cookies. This was back when these things didn’t exist in Malta, so we all got super excited,” Davinia reminisces. As an outsider, and considering just how much time Chris, Davinia and Natasha spend together – Natasha is the CEO of Chestertons, Chris is the chairman, and Davinia is one of the directors – it is incredibly special that they are so invested in making time for each other. But it all stems from one choice each of the family members made at one point or another: to accept each other as they are. “I think everything happens for a reason,” Davinia says. “Daddy’s very comfortable in his own skin and has always been. Of course, when he came out and my parents separated, it felt like the world was ending, but now it’s the norm and I’m very happy that both him and mummy are happy… Everything’s just great!” And that is the spirit of Christmas, after all: The presents, and the Christmas tree, and the food, and the copious amounts of alcohol – they’re all just there as a catalyst to bring us together and to remind us of why we’re lucky to have people who love us in our lives.

Yet behind the layers of make-up, hairspray and thick fabrics, is a history, a responsibility and, of course, a man in heels. Here, the four actors taking on the iconic role – one for Masquerade, one for Kumpanija Teatru Rjal, and two for MADC – tell me what it’s like to be a panto Dame.

When Francesca Farrugia decided to help her mother out in her Life Cycle challenge, little did she imagine that it would lead to a massive career decision that would see her changing her lifestyle, opening her own business and becoming the name behind one of Malta’s most well-loved homegrown bespoke cake-making services, Baked. “We needed to attract donations for the fundraising challenge, and we decided to bake cupcakes. The gimmick worked – a lot better than expected, actually,” Francesca starts off our interview. Four years and over 7K Facebook followers later, this must be the understatement of the year. At the time, Francesca was in-between university courses, her future still somewhat unclear. “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life, yet. The response to our cupcake baking stint worked so well... I gathered some feedback from friends and family and decided to give it a go.” Even so, the idea was more to have a side project than an honest-to-goodness full-time business. But, as side projects tend to, this one continued to grow and grow, until it was obvious that Francesca had found her calling – creating luscious, bespoke cakes. A calling that has led her to this point in time, where she is busy working on her new cake-shop/cafe in Attard. But, before, I get to know all about this new development, there’s another not inconsiderable piece of news to enquire about. It’s only been some weeks since Francesca came back from an internship with the famous Nopi, in London. “It had been a dream of mine for quite a while, to do an internship in London. I love MiddleEastern food, so Nopi was obviously a favourite. Half-joking, I mentioned it to fellow London-based foodie David Darmanin. Before I knew it, he had a word with Nicole Pisani, who used to work as chef there, and they had sorted things out for me. I was over the moon about it,” she tells me, clearly still on a high from the experience. Francesca received the news towards mid-summer; by September, she was on her way to a month of new experiences and challenges. The best thing about the internship, she tells me, was being part of a team.

“I work alone for Baked; working within a team where everyone is supporting you makes an enormous difference! The environment was incredibly professional, I learnt a lot while I was there. My job mainly consisted of prepping, so I was helping other chefs, though I also did some shifts working directly with the pastry chef.” Unusually for someone working in the catering industry, Francesca worked Monday to Friday, which also left her free to enjoy the London lifestyle over the weekends. “I enjoyed catching up with my London-based friends and can honestly say I loved every minute of it, challenges and all.” So much so that, on her return flight to Malta, she was already wondering whether she should look for other opportunities to intern in London. “I actually looked up the restaurants I was interested in and

“I might expand to savouries later on, but for now I’m sticking to my original plan; feeding people luscious cakes.” It’s a plan that seems to be working. And, perhaps given Francesca’s family history, no surprise either. She tells me that her family on both sides were always keen on baking; her mother used to make her own cakes, while her grandfather decorated them and turned them into an amazing work of art. Her father’s side of the family was equally creative in the kitchen. Clearly, Baked was just meant to happen. Of course, running your own business at such a young age – Francesca is in her mid-20s – can’t be a simple matter. “It isn’t, and in fact I’ve learnt a lot since starting Baked. I used to struggle somewhat with time-management, even liaising with clients and juggling different jobs. It took me a while to get the hang of everything, but I did it.” The business, she adds, also led to a lifestyle change to a certain extent. Whereas pre-Baked, Francesca would go out and party all weekend, Friday to Sunday, now going out is dependent on her work schedule. “A lot of orders come in for the weekend and Saturday mornings tend to be busy to deliver orders in time for the evening. When I first started baking, I figured it’s no big deal if I go out on Friday night and then wake up early Saturday. I learnt fast that this was not a good idea. I have totally readjusted my approach,” she tells me with a smile. Of course, there will always be someone who thinks delivering a vanful of bespoke cakes is no biggie, and that “there’s nothing to it”. Witness the amount of people who, when Francesca refuses an invitation due to work commitments, tell her that they don’t see what the fuss is about. “I used to be upset, but now I don’t really give these things importance to be honest. Reality is that I spend all day on my feet. It’s far from an easy job. And unless you actually do it yourself, you can’t really see it can you?” Happily, besides the hard work the job brings with it a lot of satisfaction. Seeing a customer’s happy face is priceless. So is experimenting with new flavours, successfully. “I like to try out my new concoctions on my seven-year-old cousin. When he really loves something and his face lights up...it’s amazing.” Francesca mentions the Madeira Cake, based on her great grandmother’s recipe, as one of her favourites. Crucially, however, she does not have a set ‘menu’ of cakes; every cake she bakes is unique, containing her own twist based on her knowledge of the person ordering it. “I like to speak to my clients before, get to know what they love, what makes them smile. That way, I can create something specifically for them. All my cakes are bespoke, it’s never just a case of ‘baking a chocolate cake’ and getting on with it,” she tells me proudly. Before we conclude the interview, she tells me how lucky she feels to have found her calling, the one thing that makes her happy. Christmases WITH THE PUBLICATION OF THE THIRD INSTALMENT OF HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL TRILOGY, MEMORIES, PETER APAP BOLOGNA HAS NOW COVERED A TOTAL OF 76 YEARS OF PERSONAL AND FAMILIAL HISTORY WITH A BACKDROP OF NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL EVENTS. IGGY FENECH MEETS UP WITH THE AUTHOR TO DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THE HOLIDAY THAT’S MENTIONED MOST IN HIS BOOKS, CHRISTMAS. Although many of us have numerous Christmas-related memories, the truth is that we only get to celebrate a couple of dozens of them at most. Because Christmas comes but once a year, the traditions that come with it change very slowly and – while our great-grandparents wouldn’t recognise the phones used nowadays to capture all the festive moments, and would be quite confused by the fact that Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You was being played literally everywhere – the tree, the feasting, the crib, and the midnight Mass would be something they would easily relate to. In Peter Apap Bologna’s autobiographical trilogy, Memories – which records the author’s journey through life between 1941 and 1973, 1973 and 1988, and 1988 and 2017, respectively – we see how Christmases have evolved over the years both for him and for the rest of us. “Christmas has always been magical for me,” says Peter, who is probably best-known in local art circles as the owner of the Melitensia Art Gallery, which he ran with his wife, Alaine through the 1990s after he returned to Malta in 1988. Before that, he had worked in international merchant banking in London and New York. “My parents, in fact, kept up the mystery of Santa Claus until I was about seven or eight, and it was always a beautiful time with

And, of course, a flaming Christmas pudding.” And that is the beauty of Christmas: that whether we’re six or 76, and no matter how many memories we have of it, we’re always looking forward to the next one, which is set to

For others, it’s a place to bring their children to, or a therapy place to ease their daily stress.” It soon became known even away from our shores, enticing visitors to Malta to see the little cat corner by the Mediterranean Sea. “Cat Village is a unique milestone where people meet, exchange their feline experiences and smile. It’s been filmed and documented by the Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, the US and others,” says Roza. Taking care of the cats can be time-consuming, but it is a passion for Roza. “Cats cannot synchronise their needs according to my schedule, so whether it’s a Sunday or a feast day I have to be there for them,” she says. She’s even built shelters for the cats’ comfort when she felt they were needed. And, even though cats are known to be skilled hunters, sometimes Roza herself helps them catch something to eat. “I’ll go fishing to top up a bit of food, where my catch is consumed even faster than you can say ‘cat food’,” she laughs. Now, St Julian’s 40 years ago was a very different place than it is today, and the increased urban sprawl that came with the growth of the area as one of the prime entertainment areas in the country has brought many challenges with it. Some of these challenges, argues Roza, can actually be helped by having cats in the area. “With all the mushrooming food

When asked about the promised room from the developers, Roza said that: “some months ago a meeting was held with a representative from Portomaso, an animal welfare representative, the St. Julian’s Mayor and myself. During the meeting it was verbally agreed that an alternative room with facilities would be provided

But to date, no such area has been identified.” With Cat Village likely to be gone and the promised room not in sight, Roza is worried – and with good reason – about what is going to happen to the local feline community. Her first concern was the rise of the local stray population, something she will not be able to take care of as she used to. “Nothing angers me more than careless cat owners who allow their cats to breed without accepting responsibility for the resulting kittens. Neutering will keep a low profile of strays and avoids unnecessary suffering,” she says. She calls for “all councils to embark on a serious neutering campaign together with NGOs and feeders” to combat this. But, more than that, she has one real wish and proposal, something she thinks
