Women to watch BRAINS, STYLE AND LOOKS – WHOEVER SAID THAT YOU NEED TO PICK? JOHNATHAN CILIA CELEBRATES THE SUCCESSES OF FIVE OF MALTA’S TOP LEADING LADIES. they might say it’s a man’s world, but the amount of women getting things done in modern Malta goes a long way towards happily disproving this saying. in various fields and domains women are making their professional presence felt, bringing their skill set to industries that – without rhyme or reason – were known to be male-driven, while pioneering their own way forward, on their own terms. and about time too, we say. Mixing style, intelligence, drive, and just the right amount of sass, here are some of the ladies doing the most in Malta and gozo today.

Marilu Vella Food Redefining a traditional Maltese classic, the glorious pastizzi, is no mean feat, a task not to be taken lightly. But Marilu’ Vella just wanted to make a little extra pocket money a few years back and, in the process, she changed the pastizzi game by starting Pastizzi gourmet. By replacing fat lard in the traditional pastizzi recipe with seed oils, she not only made the stalwart snacks much healthier, but also made the Maltese mainstay accessible to vegetarians. She also created a gluten-free version. But she didn’t stop with the genetic make-up of the humble pastizz. She went straight for the heart of the beast – the filling. Ricotta and pea were so 17th century. lemon curd and walnuts, vegetable curry, chocolate and marshmallow, bacon, gruyere and caramelised onion...the list of her delectable concoctions chosen to compliment and indeed stuff the classic of the classic Maltese dishes gave the hardy food item the modern facelift it sorely needed. Better yet, the ingredients are often times sourced from her very own fields. Making pastizzi healthy would have been enough, but making them tastier than ever before is the gift we didn’t know we needed. as owner, chef, and distributor of her wares, which are sold at a very affordable price, this theatre Studies graduate with an entrepreneurial streak and a passion for her country’s traditional has given more to her country than she may ever know.

Desiree’ Attard Politics In the modern political field, aspiring politicians often use fear, xenophobia, and mistrust to gain a foothold among the electorate. It can work, as the US’s case shows, but in the case of a girl from the south of Malta, a purer path was chosen. Desiree’ Attard defied all odds and was elected to deputy mayor for the Marsaskala council in 2013, before she was legally old enough to drink alcohol in the aforementioned US. Attacked as someone who “likes the environment” from members of her very own council, she has led charges against ODZ development in Żonqor Point and was a major force in the nascent Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent in their fight against over-development and errant construction. A proud socialist who comes from a strong Labour background, she is not one to shy away from criticising even her own party if they step out of line and go against the will of the people. Her strong principles and empathic personality as well as her energy for activism and putting the spotlight on issues close to her heart means she may well have a long career in politics, helping many along the way. Desiree’s other passion for travelling manifests itself in her blog, TheAnti-Tourist.net, where she scopes out little known sites in lands abroad as well as giving tips alongside stunning photography.

Elaine Falzon Art Funding As Malta’s art scene is consolidated with increased funding, more and more emerging artists and a generally better attitude towards culture, there are some people who are doing their utmost to build on this progress. Elaine Falzon, as Director of Funding at the Arts Council and Head of Funds and Brokerage, is definitely playing her part. As general coordinator for the investment of the Arts Council Malta, she works with her team to provide an annual format for funding that is accessible to as many as possible. She works with cultural operators, her team, and Maltese artists to come up with practical solutions to get artists’ work out to the public. Overseeing the procedural side of national art funding might seem mundane, but through her administrative work Maltese artists and cultural operators are given a chance to express themselves with the support of the state. The team she directs also plays a proactive role, with practical advice, honest feedback, and a helping hand going a long way to help burgeoning artists find their path.

If we don’t take the decisions ourselves, others will take these for us scenes people train and help the next generation. Youths are not the future of our political system – they are the present.

Describe everything that is wrong with Maltese politics. The blue versus red syndrome, by far. This is unfortunately compounded by hypocrisy. Individuals who are, at best, economical with the truth, the lack of transparency and accountability, and the hysteria that comes with trying to cover up all the above. It is unacceptable to have a Prime Minister at the centre of a series of corruption scandals damaging the country. It is wrong. We have to take a stand for what is right.

How will you set about counteracting this? By creating a new way of doing politics. This will bring to the fore the brightest and most talented people which are needed to focus on what is most important – startups, innovation, jobs, accountability, honesty, transparency – the ideal real world. Simon Busuttil offers this vision.

What is your reply to younger voters who proclaim to be disillusioned and who say they will abstain? They are right to doubt many politicians in the current political scenario, its normal to be disillusioned; I too have experienced this at times. But let us all remember that elections are about how our daily lives are governed, and this is incredibly important. We must keep in mind though that if we don’t take the decisions ourselves, others will take these for us – look at what happened in the UK with Brexit. This boils down to one simple question – do you want to continue to be disillusioned, or do you want to

challenge the system and change the way things are done? It is a personal choice which must be taken. We cannot be complacent and just sit back and criticize. With our vote we can change the system and I have no doubt many youths understand this.

What is the most urgent need for Malta right now? Without any doubt, a clean and honest government and strong independent institutions.

How do you feel that your professional work has helped shape your understanding of politics? My work brings me in touch with an incredible amount of talented people from all walks of life. Supporting a political party is irrelevant as long as people have the future of Malta and its people at heart. Supporting a party should not justify or act as a barrier but rather serve as an opportunity to channel diverse ideas. Everyone has an opinion and everyone has a preference. Politics is a means through which we can make our voice heard. Everyday, we are faced with choices and this is one of them. Elections are a test, everyone has the right to decide his own future but what matters most is the next day. We have to remain engaged as citizens. Democracy isn’t about voting every five years.

Politics should be all about the future generations – how do you feel that you can be of use to the young people of today? As part of that generation, what is the feedback that you receive/ your own experience about the problems and challenges that the young people of today face? I am like any other youth my age who has taken advantage of the educational and business opportunities available to me in Malta to build my future. Maltese youth are

More success CLAYTON BARTOLO /// AGE: 29, Certified Public Accountant and Registered Auditor /// PARTY: Labour Party /// DISTRICT: 12

What is your profession – and life – outside politics? I’m 29 years old, happily married to Jessica and together we have two beautiful children, Logan and Tiffany, and we live in Mellieħa. My profession is that of a Certified Public Accountant and Registered Auditor, and my office is based at Mellieħa as well. What do you consider to be the most important issues of this election and why? I believe that in the past four years Malta and Gozo have undergone a transformation – an economic miracle has turned the tables on what the people were experiencing before 2013. All of this has been brought about by a number of decisions which have been taken by the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who together with a formidable team has created the best environment for the businesses to prosper. Now it’s up to the electorate to decide whether they want to continue going forward in this journey or whether they want to turn their back on all that has been achieved in such a short period of time. The positive economic climate which

the government worked so hard for to create in the past years is now bearing fruit, and hence it needs to be guided in the best direction possible to continue achieving such positive results. What would the voters be most surprised to learn about you? Family time is very limited for us, so my idea of a relaxing evening would be at home, cooking dinner and spending some quality time together with my wife and our two kids. What is that you and your party can offer voters that other can’t? I think what the country needs most is stability. Stability so that businesses can plan for their future, which in turn leads to jobs being secured and families having peace of mind about what the future holds for them. This will lead the people to enjoy life more, and in turn increase their productivity at the workplace, something which is needed in order to ensure more positive and successful results for our country. The success story which our country is going through is all thanks to the hard work of the people, so yes I do

believe that the people deserve stability and peace of mind. What do you think is the most important thing for voters to know about you? For the past nine years I have served in the Mellieħa Local Council, the last four of which as a deputy Mayor. In this post I was 100% committed towards achieving positive and successful results for my locality, something which I believe I have managed to do. I am proud to say that throughout my time in the Mellieħa Local Council I have worked with different organisations to organise a number of cultural and popular events for the benefit of all the community. I have also put my professional competencies at the disposal of the council in order to obtain excellent results in EU-funded programmes where the Council has participated in a number of such projects and also led two projects with excellent results. Now I am looking forward to giving my all as part of a government led by Dr Joseph Muscat where we can implement a number of measure which will lead the people to experience the best times of our country.

Close to the people DR MANUEL MALLIA SHARES HIS VALUES FOR A CANDIDATURE THAT FOCUSES ON THE NEEDS OF THE ELECTORATE. Defending people for a living, as Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird or even John Adams, the second President of the USA shows us, is a tough, demanding and noble task. Dedicating your life to defending the accused and attempting to right perceived injustice can be the one of the most arduous professions out there, yet it can also be one of the most rewarding. But Manuel Mallia, who has spent the last 45 years as a lawyer practicing criminal law, sees it in less grandiose terms. “I’m just a normal man, a defense attorney, practicing a profession I love and if I had to be reborn I would probably do exactly the same thing,” smiles Mallia, sitting in his offices in Msida as his supporters are busy organising that evening’s meeting in the hallways. As the former Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Labour MP, and well-known lawyer who cut his teeth while working with the late Guido de Marco, Mallia has spent the last four years working with the government on everything from international competitiveness, the digital, maritime and service economy, to national security. His work as a lawyer has informed the way he works as a minister, using the respect and working relationship he has with a client to influence his method of administering, understanding how important it is to “act according to law and defend people according to law – and to explain to the client their real position at law”. Working closely with people in some of their most troubling and difficult times has also shown Mallia how important having empathy and compassion is. “When you are close to the people you can understand them better. People have a different level of education, and this is where experience and dedication comes in, you have to view the problem that the 18 Sunday Circle ∫ MAY 2017

person would have in the light of how important it is to them, and this is where my profession helps me.” Just like building a strong foundation for a case, building a strong foundation for a country takes time, and it’s no question why Mallia is contesting the upcoming election. “Continuity,” he says firmly. “I think the country has done really well over these last four years from an economic point of view, I sincerely believe that the quality of life of many people and most people is better now. I believe that pensioners are paying less for electricity and water, their pension is not taxed, it’s been increased twice and with the next budget around there is a further very good increase.” “For students, the level of education is very good; we have also increased stipends at university. We’ve done a lot for the worker, the middle class has strengthened, people from a lower class have really come up into a middle class, poverty has been reduced substantially but not eradicated…we’ve done a lot for minorities, especially the LGBTIQ community…” he adds.

For someone who has a clear idea of what he aims to achieve if he is elected again, deciding to contest again didn’t come easily. “I like politics, but truthfully, politics takes a lot of you,” Dr. Mallia admits. “It’s a mission; I entered politics not for the money – had I wanted to do that, I had a very successful profession – however I knew that politics was somehow a sacrifice, and that you have to divulge everything you own and what you do.” Coming to the end of his first term, Mallia now truly understands what is needed from a politician, and what it takes to seriously deliver on the demands of the people. The heavy workload and constant need to be up-to-date means long hours, and lots of research, meetings and briefings. Deciding to re-contest the upcoming election was not an easy decision for him, especially considering that Mallia and his wife and children have seen what it means to be in the public spotlight. “I did give it a lot of thought to tell you the truth,” he says straightforwardly. “As you know, my background is Nationalist

SPECIAL ELECTIONS 2017 PROMOTION

and for a time I thought that we needed change. I think certain changes have taken place and, after four years, I don’t think it’s a long enough period in order to bring in effect the programme. We still have a lot to do.” “We have to eradicate poverty, we have to invest more in social housing, we have to, in my opinion, make sure that the good economic situation and wealth goes all the way down and not trickles down…we have to change our infrastructure, our roads, and we have to think of alternative methods of transport. We have to gear into the digital world where we have a lot of advantages here, and I think we can do so much more in the film industry.” A prosperous Maltese film industry is a particular desire of Dr. Mallia, who envisions utilising Malta’s terrific indoor and outdoor filming locations, alongside quality creative talent and an attractive financial incentive, to expand the burgeoning industry. “When I was Minister of the Interior,” he starts, “I had the film industry in my portfolio, and I used to dedicate time to it because I believed in it and, in fact, from the small income that it had in just one year it developed into a real attraction. Obviously getting the right people to get their attaché case and going abroad, to get the work and promote Mala. I feel that I contested again because there are so many dreams that I would really like my country to go through with, and I have the same dream as Joseph you know – I want my country to be the best.” Upon mention of his campaign slogan of Honesty, Dedication, Experience, Mallia smiles. “Well, obviously you can’t have too many words,” he laughs, “but I really do believe in honesty, I believe in honest politicians, I believe when you enter politics you do not do this to gain apart from what you are paid for to do the job – and I think the real satisfaction, rather than the wealth, is when you see that the plans are brought into fruition, that there has been progress, that there has been success. When you can help people and see a smile on their face, all that is much more worth it.”

SPECIAL ELECTIONS 2017 PROMOTION

In a short span of time you have gone from a lowprofile family lawyer to one of the highest ranking women in Maltese politics. Your face is surely well known to all by now. What do you attribute your success to? Success comes from dreaming big and working hard, it comes from being fearless in the pursuit of what one believes is right, and that’s what I have been doing these past few years. Being a lawyer by profession I have spent a good chunk of my life defending people’s rights, that has always been my calling. What has catapulted me into the world of politics, however, was the fight I put up to introduce divorce in Malta, through a referendum which took place six years ago to this precise date. Since then I have worked incessantly to represent people in parliament as best I could, giving a voice to those who chose me as theirs and, may I add, also to those who still have no voice of their own. For just over a year you have been Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, trusted with one of the most controversial portfolios. What do you consider as your achievements so far in this sector? My portfolio is indeed a controversial one and my seat never seems to chill, however it is a portfolio that has given me a lot of satisfaction. From MEPA’s demerger just over a year ago and the building of a new structure for the Planning Authority to the setting up of the new Lands Authority, the consolidation of laws regulating government land and the massive reform currently underway, there has not been a dull moment in sight. At the new Lands Authority work is presently being done to introduce a system of digitalisation of files as well as an integrated mapping system which will take the service given to a new era. My aim is to eventually have the Lands Authority running a close to paperless system which is what we have already managed to achieve at the Planning Authority. The Planning Authority has also, for the first time, been able to financially support itself in spite of the fact that permit fees have been substantially reduced. I hold timely service to be of the essence in the sector and this past year I have also introduced time-frame regulations which the Authority has to adhere to. It is, in fact, the first Maltese authority to be financially penalised for not sticking to time frames, a prototype that has proved to work and give results. In the past months there has also been a huge improvement of government services through simplification processes, online services and one stop shops put up in different localities in order to give people a better public service. I’m very keen on reforms and I’m very proud to have managed to have achieved all of this and more in such a short span of time.

You are well-known for your strong opinions and a no-beating-round-the-bush attitude. How important do you think these attributes are for a politician? I am not the kind of person who takes knee-jerk decisions. I delve into issues, read up, research, get myself well informed and discuss matters with peers before formulating important opinions. After my mind is clear and made up, one way or another, I’m then in a position to take decisions without hesitation. I truly believe that people have a right to know what I think since I represent them in the country’s highest institution and they also have a right to my consistency. I also believe that being honest with people even when it doesn’t do me any particular favour to be so might not win me a vote but it wins me credibility. People know that I say what I mean and I mean what I say, which is unfortunately not always a given in politics. I have always found that people have much more respect for politicians who tell them a truth they don’t wish to hear than being made promises to knowing they cannot be delivered. Some would say that being a woman in politics is not an easy task. How do you manage to balance your busy schedule with family life? Let’s just say I try to juggle rather than manage to balance! Family-work balance is very difficult to achieve with the late working hours during parliamentary sittings. This was the reason I tried changing the hours to more family-friendly ones as soon as I was elected. Unfortunately, albeit having the Prime Minister backing me up all the way, the majority of members of parliament were not in agreement. I try my best to spend weekends with my son, getting as much quality time together as we possibly can. He also shows a lot of interest in my work and is presently very keen on helping me with my electoral campaign. I must say that I would not be able to function if I did not have the full support of my son and my immediate family to whom I owe my success both as a lawyer and a politician. You have embraced politics with a dedicated passion. What gives you the evident satisfaction you get from your work? I am a reformer by nature and I have decided to do politics for one main reason, to bring about a positive change in peoples’ lives. I believe in human dignity, in everybody’s right to a decent living, in equality for all and in social justice. I want everyday people to feel good about themselves, their work and their environment. Politics is not easy and it is not for everyone but I really enjoy a good challenge and until I believe I can contribute towards changing my beloved country for the better, and people continue to trust me with representing them, I will do my very best and give it my all to continue to deserve their trust.

Rosette Thake Nationalist Party Secretary General

How did your interest in politics start? My first ‘political experience’ took place in 1977 when my family was told to clear out of our house on the grounds of Mount Carmel Hospital within 24 hours. My father was a resident psychiatrist there and was taking part in the doctors’strike at the time. Mintoff decided that throwing people out of their homes and onto the streets was appropriate action. Luckily extended family came to the rescue. That traumatic experience was only the start of very turbulent times, not just for doctors and their families. It felt like your thoughts and actions were suffocated in a bid by the Labour government of the time to quash the growing dissent against an increasingly repressive regime, culminating in the election of 1981 when same Labour government remained in power despite winning a minority of votes in that General Election. I lived my secondary school years during the early 1980s. This is a time when i became more aware of the political profession, business or other work

A question of education EVARIST BARTOLO TALKS SCHOOL, POLICY, CIVIL RIGHTS AND THE FUTURE OF OUR STUDENTS.

Among the key policies you’ve introduced was co-education. A few years on, what do you make of it? When we proposed to widen co-education to include secondary education we did get some raised eyebrows, but today parents, children and educators see this as a positive step. When it was introduced, I remember a journalist asked a Form 1 student what he thought of the change and his reply was a puzzled look. For him, co-education was a natural progression. He didn’t see any sense in dividing everyone up at Form 1 and his reaction said it all. The introduction of vocational education, of learning by doing, was among the major changes seen. Why was it so important? We did make a lot of progress in this regard. I think the biggest policy change in education was that we did not accept the status-quo of treating vocational education as an after-thought but raised it, in terms of delivery and standards, at par with the academic route. The hands-on approach of vocational education allows us to reach more young people. We understood that,

despite traditional educational approaches delivering results, we were also leaving behind a big chunk of young people who did not fit with that route. Which is why we believe that the one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t suit everyone. We’ve introduced more different paths, focused on vocational and applied education, where we can engage young people and we’ve had enormous success. Are you happy with today’s education system? A lot has been achieved but it is not ‘mission accomplished’. Education is still quite rigid. When I visit schools and there’s perfect silence and a very disciplined, militaristic atmosphere I do worry. Children should enjoy learning, they should find learning exciting and we have to expand their curiosity. Top priority should be a child’s happiness and not overbearing them with exams and homework. We need to continue seeing things from a child’s perspective. How do they want to learn? How can we make a subject more engaging and exciting? In a day and age where a child is constantly bombarded by

interactive apps, tablets and online content our biggest challenge in the coming years will be how to retain their diminishing attention span and engage in a meaningful way, so that we can facilitate the learning process. Apart from education, you’ve also been associated along the years with civil rights and a vocal supporter of LGBTIQ issues. What do you make of the changes? The divorce referendum was only six years ago. It seems like a lifetime. I like to think I was one of many others who, for decades, have pushed for more civil rights and proLGBTIQ legislation, and the past years we’ve seen the fruit of all this hard work. Society is changing and we have much more acceptance today than what we had twenty years ago. It is a pity that we’ve had to wait so long for these changes, a lot of people suffered in different measures during this time, but I’m glad we’re in a good place today. The next step is to make sure these human values - equality, acceptance and respect - are transcended through the generations to make sure our society continues to move forward.

SPECIAL ELECTIONS 2017 PROMOTION

ROSIANNE CUTAJAR /// AGE: 28, Secondary school teacher /// PARTY: Labour Party /// DISTRICTS: 6 and 8

How did you come by the decision to contest the general elections? My five-year tenure as mayor of Qormi, one of the largest localities in Malta, has been a real opportunity for me to bring about the kind of change that matters to people because it actually improves their lives. It has also been a learning curve, and I say this as a former teacher myself. Listening and acting on my residents’ needs and ideas has helped me much when it came to handling larger infrastructure and educational projects. It bears saying that I am the youngest candidate on the Labour ticket for the upcoming general elections. Had I simply woken up one fine morning and decided to run for election, this on its own would not have meant much. I step forward today to ask for my people’s trust on the basis of a solid track record and evident results. At the helm of one of Malta’s best-performing local councils, I have overseen five years of well-planned initiatives in roads and urban infrastructure and restoration, landscaping, educational, literacy and civil society initiatives, sports facilities and facilities for people with disabilities, attraction and channeling of funds into the renovation of libraries, to mention only a few. Representing people means not only speaking on their behalf, but acting to ensure their lives are actually made better, and the difference felt as a result. I firmly believe I can now place this record to good use on a national level. I have received support and encouragement in spadefuls – from the Prime Minister himself, from Labour, from colleagues in politics, from the many people whom I meet every day across the sixth and eighth districts. People can recognise a job well done when they see it and feel its effects – the age of malicious spin is on its way out. I’m running for public office because it’s high time we injected a new faith in politics – in its meaning as an opportunity to deliver on creating a healthier, more equal, and more knowledgeable society.

What does politics mean to you? I say this responsibly – politics is the art of making people’s lives better. It is the effort to mobilise a generation and prepare the ground for it to achieve its best yield a few years down the line. Anything short of this definition would be a misnomer. To be elected is a gift of trust my people would expect me to re-invest in the principles Labour has stood for in the past: improving workers’ conditions, creating more and better opportunities for lower-incomeearning families, lifting people out of poverty, delivering quality education and health services. I strive to be part of the change I believe in: doing justice by those who have been deprived of the chance to have a better life, a recognised voice in this country, equal chances of decent work, rewarding careers, possibilities of studying abroad, better access to comfortable living and enjoying the benefits of a healthy life.

Representing people means acting to ensure their lives are actually made better

Politics is about achieving a balance between careful management of the existing wealth and the creation of more of it: and not only of tangible, but also of less immediately “evident” wealth. To give you a real example – I have overseen investment in outdoor Book Boxes with the same enthusiasm I’m striving to reduce the problem of traffic congestion in my locality through an automated parking sensors system – a national first in this cutting-edge technology, hailed by the PM himself. Politics is knowing how to harness the best available solutions to overcome whichever problem you’re confronted with. In 2013, we found a country in dire need of an economic overhaul – look where we are today. If that is not the politics of hard and earnest work, then tell me what is. Labour is not just the name of a party. It is a humble promise to do more, and to do better. What will be your top priorities if elected? I will cut to the chase — the job ahead of us is a demanding one. Just as I’ve done in my hometown — a business hub — in the past five years, I will work hard to ensure the country’s infrastructure is brought up to scratch to be able to service the complex needs of an expanding economy and a bouncing services sector. I will bring to the House a series of proposals targeted at seeing that the legislation we have pushed through in the past four years – civil unions, gender equality and LGBTIQ rights, the MAP, all that we’ve achieved on the social front will be felt, and the social goods delivered, in the day-to-day life of our country. I am a determined social democrat – we cannot allow anyone in this country to live in difficulty, or to fall through the net, simply to satisfy the egos of the conservative few. I will act to ensure that our local workforce is on-goingly equipped with a solid skills-based education to be able to cater for the new sectors thriving in Malta at present, and the exciting industries coming our way in the next years. I already have in hand effective proposals for enticing more women towards employment, and for helping wean our social mindset towards the active and greater responsibility of women across all social sectors. Be assured that I will keep listening, taking note, and springing into action!

Building a better future

CLIFTON GRIMA /// AGE: 33, Lawyer /// PARTY: Labour Party /// DISTRICT: 9 and 10

What is your profession – and life – outside politics? I graduated in 2010 from the Faculty of Laws at the University of Malta and I practice Law at the law courts. I specialise in Civil and Commercial Law and I confess that I enjoy my profession because it keeps me in contact with the people. Being a lawyer, you encounter many situations

28 Sunday Circle ∫ MAY 2017

where people suffer tremendously. I receive personal satisfaction when I see justice served and I am glad I form part of this process. My personal life is a very normal and simple one. Outside politics I dedicate most of my time to my wife Rita and my son Michael. Those who know me well will tell you that my family means the world to me. We all love our family unconditionally and I am no exception. Being a father has changed the way I look at life , I feel that I have to improve our country and help build a better future for our country . What do you consider to be the most important issues of this election and why? In a democracy, there are many opinions. Pluralism has been very vivid in our current

political situation. I think there are many important issues. The fact that as a country we achieved a surplus after a whole generation means that we are finally on the right economic track. All foreign rating agencies have confirmed that and this general positive financial feeling is felt too. I also believe that one may look at the track record. A PL Government has basically achieved 90% of the manifesto. To name a few, we decreased the electricity bill, improved pensioner’s conditions, reduced unemployment to record figures and have introduced equality bills that other previous administrators always promised but never delivered. I think that all citizens have their own important issues. A PL Government would continue in the current path of

equality, social justice, environmental sustainability and economic growth. What would voters be most surprised to learn about you? As I explained, I am a family man. I enjoy spending time with my wife and kid. I am very passionate about sports in general, especially football, where apart from being an avid AC Milan supporter, I’m also involved in local football. I have been active in various local organisations which work in our localities. In my youth days I used to play football; well, at least I tried to . What is it that you and your party can offer voters that the others can’t? Our track record speaks for itself. Our actions speak louder than words. In the last four years, we were on the right side of history. When it came to the Heavy Fuel Oil Saga, it was a PL government who ended that Environmental Genocide. LGBTIQ again, where was PN? We supported such policy because we truly believed in equality then and we believe in it today. The PL Government has delivered. We have turned the statement Alice in Wonderland into realistic successful projects and this can be recognised by everybody in good faith. We admit that there is still a lot to be done. From my side, I believe that we shall be closer to our constituents to listen their suggestions and experiences. Everyone in society has his part to offer and I will make my best to represent them and their ideas in Parliament should I be chosen by the people. Clifton Grima is there for the people and will be there for the people. What do you think is the most important thing for voters to know about you? I have strong values and principles. Although I am considered a young politician, I’ve been in politics for years. I have served as Mayor of Msida and also held a seat in Parliament during the last legislature. In parliament I was active in various areas where I strived to improve the Maltese society. I’m proud to say that I come from humble origins, from a working class family where my parents always transmitted their values to me and my siblings. I was brought up just like other kids in my neighbourhood , where I had to work hard to achieve anything in life. I worked hard and therefore I believe in meritocracy but I also believe in second chances, opportunities and helping the other. In Malta, we have all been given strong values and our society is a very generous one. I am proud to be Maltese and love my country. I’m proud of my origins, am fond of those who elected me, so from day one I’ll be a man of the people as any respectable politician should be. Personal contact is essential. Politicians who don’t follow this path should not be trusted. The PL Government has introduced many positive policies. In the last legislature, I worked and chaired parliamentary committees where I had the possibility to acquire a lot of knowledge. Voters should know that a lot of people I met have taught me a lot and I am ecstatic knowing that I helped many through my work in Parliament.

Spotlight on Gozo JOE CORDINA /// AGE: 54, Public accountant and auditor /// PARTY: Labour Party /// DISTRICT: 13

What is your profession? I am a certified public accountant and auditor, mayor of Xagħra, chairman at Gozo Channel Company Limited, Chairman of the Gozo Action group and Head of the Maltese delegations at the Community of the regions. But, more importantly, I am a father and a husband. What do you consider the most important issues of this election and why? All issues are important but first and foremost I would like to make an appeal to the public to keep calm and respect the opinion of others. Turning to politics, I consider that the most important issue not only for this election but for every election, in my regard, is the well-being of the Gozitan community and what policies would come into play which would increase their quality of life. The issue of double insularity and ease of accessibility to Gozo are of utmost importance in my opinion. What would the voter be most surprised to learn about you? Being that I always have a busy schedule, sometimes I try to wake up early in the morning and take an early swim in Ramla Bay, which happens to be just five minutes away from where I live. What is it that you and your party can offer voters that the others can’t? We have promised to deliver and we have delivered. We are consistent. When I was entrusted with the role as chairman of Gozo Channel Limited, four years ago, I encountered a company

30 Sunday Circle ∫ MAY 2017

which was practically bankrupt. However, we managed to turn it into a profit-making company, now making a €1 million profit a year. When analysing what this government has achieved in just four years one can easily come to the conclusion that it deserves another mandate. It is clear that others are not ready to govern this nation. The Labour Party offers the most realistic solutions to move forward and enrich our economy bringing more prosperity and economic growth. More importantly, we have a leader with enough will and determination to keep governing this nation for many years to come. What do you think is the most important thing for voters to know about you? I have spent a decade as the mayor of Xagħra, four years as chairman of the Gozo Channel and even seven years as President of the GFA. In every position I was entrusted with I always worked hard and gave it my all, putting the entities interests before my own. Furthermore, the fact that I am currently also occupying the position of the Head of the Maltese delegation of the Committee of Regions further gave me a better understanding of the main challenges regions within the European Union face. I believe that I gained enough experience throughout the years, experience which makes me ready to serve Malta and Gozo in the best way possible. As I always did in the past, I always help every Gozitan in the best way I can, and I promise you that that will never change.

Getting to the heart of the matter MARION MIZZI SETS HER SIGHTS ON THE ISSUES MOST VITAL TO THE VOTERS.

What is your profession? Having been in the well being business for 40 years now, I have had many different descriptions for what I do, some accurate some maybe not so much. I can safely say my profession is that of helping others – sometimes through physical appearance others by just being there to listen to what they have to say. Over the years we have set up a number of Spas and Slimming clubs round Malta and Gozo which are now run by my children Jean and Petra, within these Spas we employ some 200 people. I can proudly say we have helped thousands of over weight and obese people from all round Malta, Gozo and the world achieve their desired weight and health goals thus making my profession a very rewarding one. What are the biggest issues being faced these elections? Although the last four years have been very successful and we have seen growth in every aspect of country's economy we are unfortunately faced with an opposition that is out to destroy what has been built over the past years. The opposition's campaign has not been built to promote how they can improve our country, but round how they can take down and undermine what has been

achieved over the past four years – which honestly speaking is really very concerning. What would surprise voters to know about you? Some will be surprised to find out that a hobby of mine is playing poker! I chose poker because it is a game about understanding people. Funnily enough once you figure out how your opponents function in their daily lives you will figure out how they will react in a game of poker, their body language and what makes them tick. Having spent all these years dealing with different people from all walks of life, all passing through different situations, I have learnt not to listen to the words coming out of peoples mouths but what their body has to say. Playing poker gives you a great opportunity to practice reading what people are really thinking and they know that losing is an essential part of the game. What is your message to the voters? Use your vote wisely – take a look at what really matters and ask yourself, where do I want to be in 5 years time? I can safely say that within this short period of Labour Government all that has been promised has been delivered, or if not all close. We have

seen a reduction in electricity bills, an increase in the minimum wage, free child care and much more. Changing this now would stop the good and hard work which has been done. What is the most important thing voters should know about you? Voters should know I have chosen to run for these elections because I would love to have the privilege to continue working for Malta and Gozo. To use my experiences and common sense in the best way ever. I have faith in our party and in the work they have done - so if you - like me want a better future for yourself and your children Continue to trust us and be wise on June 3. I will be contesting the upcoming elections on the 3rd and 10th districts.

ON STYLE How do you define your style? Sleek and occasionally edgy. I enjoy being different with my clothes. Of Course, this depends on the occasion and if it is a slightly formal event, then I wear a suit. With a suit, I like more of a classic, clean look and quality is important, so I love that my Boss suits fit perfectly. In my free time I like to be more casual and, sometimes, a bit flashy.

You are very much into fashion, some people even declare you as one of the current ‘it-boys’. If there is any hype around me, I don’t notice it because I don´t care too much about that kind of thing. But yes, I am very interested in fashion. I like to dress differently and be a bit edgy when it comes to my style. I have a friend who helps me. I choose everything on my own but she helps me and gives me advice when I ask her.

Are there any clothes or accessories you have a weakness for? Sneakers! I have so many pairs of sneakers. I’m not sure exactly how many but I do wear them all.

What piece of clothing do you feel most comfortable in? A nice leather jacket or sweater, a pair of jeans and sneakers. For official engagements or when I dress up, I like my Boss suit and, on the race track, my race suit of course.

What are your thoughts on men’s fashion today? Fashion is completely subjective and what someone enjoys wearing, someone else will not – and both views are ok. So, I don’t think you can judge fashion as a whole.

On what occasions do you wear a suit? I’d wear a suit more for formal occasions than in my free time. Sometimes for the right evening event, I also like to wear a tuxedo.

How does a suit have to be cut, for you to feel comfortable? I like a classic look and slim cut. My Boss suits fit perfectly.

CELEBRITIES

Although you’ve known each other now for a very long time, there is a noticeable rivalry between you and your team colleague Nico Rosberg. How is your relationship? Well, firstly we are competing against each other in the most competitive motor sport series in the world, so there is always going to be rivalry. That rivalry has been there throughout our time racing together. We are colleagues who respect each other but also fierce competitors.

ON HIS PERSONAL LIFE Define success. Success is hard work, dedication and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.

Many people claim that success and achievements never changed them at all. What about you? I feel that there has been a massive change that I have gone through over the past few years. But it is not because I won the championship. I have gradually gained more freedom and more confidence in my ability to manage my career and this has felt like breaking out of a sheltered cocoon for me.

What is the most important attribute of a champion? Talent! If you do not have talent, you cannot win. That’s how it is.

What does it take to make Lewis Hamilton happy? My dogs, good food, great company, friends, family, music, kids, seeing life, feeling life. Mostly, we go through life without stopping for a second to look at what surrounds us. I make it a habit to do it every single day - even if it literally is one second - and absorb.

How do you relax? By listening to music or playing the piano.

Who is your personal hero? I actually don’t have a hero, but the two people I have admired most are Nelson Mandela and Ayrton Senna.

Do you have a life motto? Never give up and enjoy every moment as if it were your last.

To a greater degree, I’ve found myself agreeing with the sweeping statement that the only difference between boys and men is the size of their toys. Especially when it comes to cars and the like, as I’ve stumbled unwittingly from the realm of boyhood into manhood. To try put these thoughts into words, I needed some inspiration. So, of course, I decided on a short, leisurely drive. This quickly turned into an impromptu drag race, as is my wont, with the younger version of the car I happened to be driving – both incidentally boyhood dream machines – up a stretch of mountain road to a quiet area. Race over, I settled on a spot overlooking the very aptly named Isle of Man, which would presently be gearing up for the manliest of all boyish activities, the Isle of Man TT races.

So what do women want? While many of you are expecting a thesis as long as the Bible, the truth is that women can be simple and uncomplicated creatures. If you feed them when they are hungry, make an effort to listen to them when they speak and pepper their day with thoughtfulness, that is. Of course, all the above emanates from respect. If you respect and value a woman’s time, thoughts and feelings and you’re not oblivious to your own actions then you could look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame’s uglier cousin and you’d still be in demand. It takes a lot of discipline and self-control to walk away from what had been for many years one’s livelihood in order to step on a new road of self-expression What made you to write this book? As one is reaching my age, 68, one cannot help reflect on the life one had lived and ask himself whether the life he did not live might have been better. This is an unavoidable condition of human existence and is common to us all, me definitely included. The book presents my personal introspections and insights as well as some of the research findings in psychology that have been helpful in my personal journey of contemplating this fundamental question.

If you had to point out the highlights of your business career, what would they be? Strange as it might sound, retiring from business was actually my business career highlight. Start making the dough by mixing the honey, instant yeast and salt together in your lukewarm water. Place the flour into a large mixing bowl and pour your honey mixture on top. Mix until the dough starts to come together in a rough ball. Gradually add lukewarm water if your mixture had dry lumps of flour. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.

Transfer the mixture to a lightly-floured surface and knead by hand for three more minutes. The dough should be relatively stiff, but still supple and slightly tacky. If the dough is too wet or sticky, knead in some additional flour.

Special Elections 2017 Promotion

SIMON BUSUTTIL “Let us Restore Trust in Politics” You were a successful MEP in Brussels. What made you give up that career and enter the fray of local politics? I was never involved in national politics prior to 2013, so when I came back to Malta, after nine years as an MEP in Brussels, I was taken aback by the loud, crudely partisan, and pointlessly confrontational way of doing politics. I had a choice then: either to run straight back where I came from, or to work to change Malta's political landscape. I stayed. And my resolve to fulfil this mission is now stronger than ever. I want to ensure that once and for all, good governance policies are entrenched in the Constitution so that the right corruption-proof structures are set in place for whoever is in government. People seem to have lost trust in politicians, can this be reverted? I am fully aware that people feel let down, deceived, and disillusioned. This is very serious because without faith in politicians, democracy is undermined. I want people to look at politicians and say: “There goes a gentleman, a decent person”. Think Godfrey Farrugia – he is a symbol of decency in our system. I can’t even begin to imagine the difficulties he faced when he decided to leave the party he loved because of horrendous wrongdoings, and yet he did it, and set an example to us all.

I am aware that many people have given up on politicians. I don’t blame them. After being disillusioned by a party in government for too long, four years ago we were promised a government of meritocracy and transparency. We got none of that; we got far worse. But I believe in action, not words. It is for this reason, that I am strongly committing to concrete proposals to overhaul the system, which I will start implementing the minute Forza Nazzjonali is elected. Electoral campaigns are always fraught with tension. Do you feel that this time round? The proof of rampant corruption by people at the top has triggered tension not just here in Malta but also on the international scene. My heart sinks every time I read the headlines in the morning. However, what angers me most is the fear that Muscat has instilled in people. Every day I meet people who are afraid to speak out or to criticize. Scaremongering has become the order of the day. Why should citizens worry about losing their job or not getting a promotion if they voice their opinion? As recently as 2013, no one ever worried about saying exactly what they thought; not one of the 36,000 who opted to vote for Labour ever felt they had to be quiet about their party preference. This gets to me and I want to make it clear that fear plays no part in the future I envisage for Malta.

You often talk about ‘politics for people’. What do you mean by that? I believe in politics where people are not dependent on political parties or politicians; where people can live their lives without having to go knocking on the doors of politicians. I want a political environment where you receive what’s rightfully yours without having to beg for it. I want us all to live in a country that opens doors of opportunity according to abilities. Above all I want a Malta where the State helps when needed, and not because of who you are or who you voted for. Why is your party part of a coalition? Forza Nazzjonali is something I am very proud of. Ever since I became the leader of Partit Nazzjonalista, I resolved to make the PN once more a party in touch with people's concerns. I spent the best part of the last four years meeting people: people who over the years had been hurt by the Party they so loved; people who wanted to see the PN unshackled by past restraints; people who had no allegiance to any Party but wanted more justice and fairness. Many a time I could not even find the appropriate words to apologize or to be grateful, but each time I was touched and energized by people’s hope to see the rebuilding of a Party deserving of our country. And that is what made me change the Party structures, to turn it into one which truly represents the society we live in: we opened up, we embraced people from all walks of life, colour, gender and race. This last year, the gravity of the political situation made us take this approach further

– we had to open up to other parties, join forces with people with a common aim. I believe Marlene Farrugia’s [Leader of Partit Demokratiku] loyalty to Malta is exceptional. This is how the Forza Nazzjonali coalition was born, and has since become a national force – of people and of reason. Together we will create structures to eradicate corruption. This essentially means the reworking of our institutions, to ensure they have the power to uphold democracy and the rule of law in any situation. This is

why I am pledging that the most important appointments – from Police Commissioner to President – will no longer be at the discretion of the Prime Minister but will require a two-thirds majority in Parliament. These are decisions that should belong to the nation. What is your vision for Malta? I want a Malta where politics is merely on the backburner in people’s lives. I want Malta to be a text-book example of good governance. I want a Malta with a soul and

a social heart. I want a Malta which opens doors of opportunity. I love this island of ours. When you think about it, we’re a little miracle in the middle of the Mediterranean. Over the centuries, through sheer will and hard work, our people have successfully turned this little barren rock into a true gem, and I am not about to sit back and let that be thrown away. On 3 June the world will be watching us. Our choice will determine our destiny. Choosing Forza Nazzjonali means choosing Malta.

Transform Politics.

Choose Malta. In every democracy, political parties play a necessary role. But that doesn’t mean that politics has to be monopolised by partisan concerns. Having a voice in our Maltese bi-partisan system can be difficult. Typically, Maltese citizens are given a binary choice every five years. It does not need to be this way. Imagine a different way of doing politics. Imagine democracy which goes beyond the four walls of the Parliament building. Imagine politics which empowers us all. Imagine a more transparent, a better connected, and a more mature democracy. We want to give the public better access to policy formulation and evaluation through technology that has become as ubiquitous as Facebook or YouTube. The Internet aids civic engagement by providing new ways to interact with governmental institutions. It changes the way decisions can be taken, especially in public policy formulation. It becomes easier for us all to respond to political initiatives and, more importantly, to propose actionable ideas in areas that are of particular interest to us: good governance, transparency, the environment, education, our own locality. Yet until now politics has remained principally analogue. Enter ForzaNazzjonali.com/ideat - the Party’s commitment to change politics. The first step towards crowdsourcing democracy. Harvesting ideas and proposals from the public is more than mere digital brainstorming. Individuals and small groups find it natural to think in terms of their long-term prospects and goals. Facilitating civic engagement makes it easier for our society to engage in long-term thinking, which goes beyond the present-term electoral cycle. IDEAT is a space to capture and nurture such engagement. Social media and newspaper comment boards have asserted their space in the endless jousting of regular punters and trolls, however they have been unable to create a platform for discussion on ideas. ForzaNazzjonali.com/ideat on the other hand creates an environment in which participants safely debate ideas rather than each other. We have harnessed the opportunities which digital offers to give politics back to us, the people.

6 ∫ MAY 2017

We are using the possibilities offered by technology to reshape our democracy. To make the best use of society’s distributed intelligence, we need to distribute power better. We are empowering Maltese citizens so that each can play a greater role in shaping Malta. Within a few hours from the launch of the IDEAT platform we were overwhelmed by the response we received. What started as a simple experiment became a national case study in transforming democracy through the use of collaborative tools. The Facebook-live launch video was seen by over 60,000 people and within a day or so we were receiving a new proposal every 2 minutes... we now count over 2,000. This is an exceptional celebration of Maltese creativity and wide participation in politics. The platform empowers every citizen to be able to prioritize what government should deliver. It transforms the democratic process from politics by the few to politics by the many. IDEAT is more than a glimpse of what a PN in government is committed to introduce if elected. It is an achievable vision of a way where every citizen not only proposes his or her own ideas but also has an active and direct say as to how public funds are utilized and prioritized. The pledge made by Simon Busuttil is to take IDEAT national; turn it into a real tool to enhance and guarantee government transparency and accountability throughout the whole legislature. It is a transformation we have been longing for. With the IDEAT platform we are empowering people and connecting them to each other. We are restoring trust in politics. We are making history, together.

We are choosing MALTA.

MARLENE FARRUGIA “Everyone has a place with us in Forza Nazzjonali”

As a female politician from a rural village, I have found it difficult to find acceptance as a leader in society despite most Maltese households being led by women. The irony is that when a woman asserts herself outside of her domestic influence, she is seen as crazy, arrogant and is subject to sexist comments. So, for me, this election isn’t just about political victory but about highlighting the importance of the role of women in Malta. We’re breaking the mould, so it’s double the challenge but also doubly satisfying.

Tolerance & Unity When I think of the most important outcomes for politics in Malta, I think of tolerance and unity. I grew up in a staunch Labour family in Zurrieq, back when Partit Nazzjonalista’s clubs were being burnt to the ground. It was hugely oppressive and I saw how frightening it was for people, even though I wasn’t directly affected. But, as a young adult, I rebelled against that and the violence I had seen; even then I knew how wrong it was. When I voted for the first time it was for Partit Nazzjonalista, but that wasn’t easy. I experienced first-hand how divided Malta is, and how friends can become enemies for reasons that can’t be described. Since then I have always strived to be part of a functioning democracy and part of wider Europe and the world. I have always struggled to instil the importance of consensual politics, because the politics of division does not bear the fruit that we need it to, especially at such a crucial time. Tolerance is vital because it brings out the best in everyone – whatever creed, colour, gender or background, it’s our diversity that makes us amazing.

Sincerity & Authenticity Sadly though, we are more divided than ever, and people are becoming vicious. We have to work against that together by bringing positivity, cordiality and even humour back into politics. We have to get our message across without hurting people. The terrible situation we’re in can only be fixed by hard work. I believe very much in reaching out to people on a personal level, because when you sit and discuss things with someone it’s very hard not to find common ground. And I have witnessed that common ground in so many of my constituents, who are proud to be voting Forza Nazzjonali. People are desperate for authenticity and are fed up of the empty promises they have been fed. They are looking for sincerity and we can provide this.

Inclusive & Secure Everyone has a place with us at Forza Nazzjonali. If you are old Labour and believe in the good of the party that we once knew, then you have a place with us. Similarly, if you believe that national interest should come first and that corruption has no place in Malta and Gozo, then you have a place with us. The bridge is there to be walked across because we all want the same things – a happy life, security in our jobs and the safety of a country that is being run well. Do we have to tear each other apart to achieve this? The difficult situation we are in came about because the government did not clean up its act in time – or at all. If they had handled things properly we wouldn’t be here today. There would be no need for an election, and Labour would have governed for another five years. But that didn’t happen. Instead they chose a path that undermines the credibility of our country and future generations.

A Leap Foward I now imagine a great future for Malta where we finally engage in consensual, transparent politics and the best minds in our country create the policies needed for us to thrive. When we voted for Joseph Muscat in 2013 we thought we were moving in the right direction. But that turned out differently – we were simply playing into their vision to make money quickly and leave our country in disarray. So now is the time to fight against that and create a new, united future for Malta. It is time to take the leap forward towards a Forza Nazzjonali.

MARIO DE MARCO “The time has come for political maturity”

Strong leadership is always needed, but a trustworthy leader is even more vital in times of crisis. Malta is undoubtedly facing a delicate stage in its post-EU history, given the current meltdown in our institutions and regulatory bodies. The government’s actions and inaction have damaged our country’s reputation particularly over the past twelve months. This is unacceptable – Malta does not belong to the government, but to you, the people.

A Vote for Normality This is not a normal election. The electorate is not being asked to judge, as is usually the case, between electoral proposals and manifestos. This election goes far beyond issues such as tax reduction, childcare centres and tablets. This election is about principles. It is about the fundamental principles of good governance and the rule of law. It is about deciding whether we want to live in a normal country in which we, including the Prime Minister, are all equal before the law. In this election we need to vote for normality – where good remains good, and bad and abusive behaviour is never deemed acceptable. Our rallying cry, ‘Choose Malta’, is for people to put partisan politics aside and vote for the one thing that unites all: our country. Partit Nazzjonalista and Partit Demokratiku, stand united as a coalition: Forza Nazzjonali. The coalition unites people from different political ideologies but who ultimately are bound together by one common thread: that of believing in the goodness and honesty of Malta as a nation. This country needs now, more than ever, to be led by honest and accountable politicians.

No More Partisan Divides We need to start conducting politics in a different way. Achieving that should have been much easier for us than for other

8 ∫ MAY 2017

countries, largely because we are so small and because the two main political parties share so much common ground when it comes to decision making. Yet, time and time again, we have seen divisive politics rather than a politics of consensus. Many hoped that the large majority given to Joseph Muscat four years ago, would herald a much needed new way of doing politics. Sadly, the change we witnessed was for the worse. This country has had enough of this divide. We simply want to be able to live in a country where our institutions are free to carry out their duty in the interest of the nation. We need to radically shake up our institutions; they may have served us well for a long time but they are clearly not serving us well in this moment of crisis. It is unacceptable to have five different Police Commissioners in four years, just as it is unacceptable to have a Police Force that seems to act only when and how politicians dictate. This is not the Malta we want to live in.

Achieving Political Maturity We need to have the political maturity to ensure that the Police Commissioner and the Force is detached from executive interference, and will uphold the interest of each and every citizen. To this effect, we are proposing that the Police Commissioner is appointed by two-thirds majority of our parliament. This will ensure his or her independence. The choice is then by the people, not the Prime Minister. Likewise, we need to ensure that appointments to our authorities – be it for planning, environment and resources, Transport Malta or any other – are truly there to serve the citizen, and not the government. People who work in the private sector know that it is not your political beliefs that determine how well you do in your career, but your capability and determination that makes the difference. This way of doing things needs to be transposed into our Public Service, authorities and institutions. Only then can we say that we have reached political maturity.

Unity Can Be Achieved Politics is important. It can be an instrument for improvement in each of our lives. But this has to be achieved in a way where we are all participants and each one of us is the beneficiary. We all need to voice our disappointment in the current state of affairs and to insist that our parties and their way of doing politics needs to change. Together we can secure that much-needed change for our nation.

BEPPE FENECH ADAMI “Let us choose right from wrong”

When I think of what inspires me, it’s achieving a ‘politics of values’. I don’t believe we should have politicians who are managers; running a country is not the same as running a company – and I think that this is the biggest mistake that Joseph Muscat made. To him, the country is up for sale. This is simply unacceptable.

Unity in Diversity Malta is so small we cannot afford to be divided. The way forward is through a politics of consensus, and this needs compromise. Unity should not come at the expense of diversity and this is something we are all learning – extreme division is over and our future should be defined by unity in diversity. I believe our country is going through a very delicate phase because people are very disillusioned by politics and feel incredibly let down. This government could have done everything so right and had all the makings of success, but it didn’t. It did the opposite.

A Vision of Opportunity Now we have to take the leap from an electoral programme to a vision for this country. We have lost our way. This government may be reaping the fruits of previous decisions but it has not been capable of building upon them. Where are the new niches in our economy? There aren’t any. We cannot afford to live without moving forward.

Active Leadership We urgently need to consider a number of key areas. For instance, our education system desperately needs to be overhauled. We cannot have half of our children going to university and MCAST while the other half aren’t even obtaining their O’ Levels. This needs to be addressed. Another challenge lies in how to engage our ageing population and find solutions for people whether they are in their 60s, 80s or beyond. Then, the environment needs careful consideration, as we have to strike the right balance between development and the importance of conservation. We also need to wake up to the reality of the thousands of foreigners living locally and how this is impacting lives – both positively and negatively. Finally, the major challenge is to grab and exploit the good opportunities that come our way. Our youth have the world at their feet but we cannot miss the boat – and we have lost a number of key opportunities in recent years. It is not right that Brexit is taking place and we are not even addressing the pros and cons from our perspective. We need to be active, and to be active we need leadership that will commit to a positive, united vision for Malta.

A Malta of Empowerment When I think of our future, I hope we never lose our social conscience. When we speak of ‘economic growth’, ‘no deficit’ and having a ‘surplus’, let us not forget that these numbers mean nothing unless we ensure the good of this country trickles down to the people that need it. Without that understanding, we have lost everything. So, let us become a Malta of empowerment – where the government inspires and creates opportunities. When we are a Malta that does not throw away the values that make us unique – which means we know the value of solidarity and can make the choice between good and bad. In the past we have always successfully chosen the path of good when we were at a crossroads, and I trust that this will happen again now at this very crucial time. This is not about Forza Nazzjonali and Labour, but about choosing between what is right and what is manifestly wrong. Malta has literally been looted in the last four years. Let us not sacrifice everything for the benefit of the very few.

Dr. Simon Busuttil's determination and drive is a constant. I truly believe that he can make the difference that is needed at this crucial time to our country and political system. As a mother of two young children, I want Malta to be a country where meritocracy means equal opportunities for all. Honesty and transparency are a must for me. I believe in a different way of doing politics, in which fundamental rights are thoroughly respected and in which democracy is a top priority. Dr. Busuttil offers a new, dynamic, positive way of doing politics. He is an inspiring, modern leader who has managed to pull together people with different political views for the sake of fighting corruption and regaining our Malta.

I have been given a platform to spread an environmental message and guide Forza Nazzjonali in that direction through our joint electoral programme. I find it hard to choose between heritage and environment – we need a sustainable policy in both areas. I will create stronger links between local councils and government, so that people's grievances are heard; and will also fight for the need to strengthen the ERA (Environment and Resources Authority). I also believe NGOs should have more say. I will fight for a transparent, honest and united society as a political outsider. voting for Forza Nazzjonali means you are voting for very real change in Malta.

I believe in equality and justice for the Maltese people. We need to restore the common good, at a time when lining the personal pockets of individuals is winning the day. The theory of virtue in which you seek what is good and the rest will be given to you is something I believe in. Forza Nazzjonali will remove an obviously corrupt bunch in government and replace them with those intent on seeking the common good.

I am open-minded and determined to change the current political system. Being disabled, the main driving force behind my contesting this general election is to tackle those disability issues I feel still need to be addressed. I also want to address existing problems within the health system as well as discrimination at the workplace. I'm also very passionate about helping Malta reconfigure its identity as a democratic country. I was involved in a serious traffic accident and I believe that this experience taught me how to face adversity and remain positive. I feel that those who led a difficult life are more likely to lead with fairness and understanding. Forza Nazzjonali is the way out of the present disastrous situation Malta is facing at the moment.

I chose to be part of Forza Nazzjonali because it is proposing a fresh start in the way our country is governed. It will ensure proper and clean governance. Malta has been taken over by a criminal gang who is using the unquestioning loyalty of supporters to loot Malta's coffers. This election could make or break Malta and it all depends on who will be elected to government. People know that I am honest and that I am into politics to contribute to my country's welfare, putting it before any other allegiance. I think that it’s about time that art, culture and artists are represented in Parliament. I strongly believe that our present situation is due to politicians who give too much importance to the economy and neglect art and heritage. This has resulted in a country without a soul. I believe that the way forward is a government comprised of different currents with one goal: that of cleaning up the Muscat mess and returning our country to the people.

After serving my locality as a Deputy Mayor, I joined Forza Nazzjonali to fight corruption. I am here to serve the people and be their voice.
