A WORD FROM

the editor

Welcome to the first edition of 2017, welcome to the new you. Or maybe not. I have to confess that I’m not really one for these new starts every time the clock arbitrarily resets itself back to another 12-month span. We can be what we want to be every single day of whichever month of the year. Bar on Mondays, of course. On Monday you can only be something that’s related to sitting close to a constant coffee source. But enough about all those pesky resolutions. We know you’re probably low on energy and low on Vitamin D, so we’ve kept this month’s edition of Sunday Circle as light as possible. Which is not to say that there isn’t plenty to enjoy. Starting with those of you who love watching Maltese television series, in

particular Division 7. You might have noticed a familiar face taking the spotlight in recent episodes – that face is Davide Tucci’s, but there’s a good chance that you’ve never seen him like this before. Peroxide blonde hair, prison tattoos and a general air of toughness around him. Anna-Marie Galea caught up with him to find out all about this transformation and how it’s affecting one of Malta’s most well-loved actors. Our animal focus this month is on cats – more specifically, the invaluable work that the CSAF is carrying out with strays. It is run entirely by volunteers, who impress writer Johnathan Cilia with their determination and their energy. If it’s political satire you’re in the mood for, check out our interview with legendary

The Guardian cartoonist Steve Bell. The artist was recently in Malta to collaborate with the Malta Arts Council on a carnival float that is yet to be unveiled. His account of his dealings with Britain’s politicians is hilarious and cutting... On the artistic side, this month we focus on an exhibition of exquisite snuff boxes that is currently running at Palazzo Falson, in Mdina. From the theatrical perspective, Veronica Stivala speaks to Adrian Buckle about the upcoming Unifaun play – Unintended – which he scripted himself. There’s a lot more – shopping, photography, fashion, beauty... everything needed to gently ease you into the year. I hope you enjoy the read and see you again next month.

FORGET THE BOY NEXT DOOR ACTOR DAVIDE TUCCI HAS TRANSFORMED INTO A PEROXIDE BLONDE AND HE’S LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT – AS LONG AS HE’S ON SET. HE TELLS ANNA MARIE GALEA ABOUT DEALING WITH BEING ONE OF TV SERIES DIVISION 7’S VILLAINS.

It’s Davide Tucci, but not as you have seen him before. This season, thanks to TV series Division 7, viewers are seeing a different side to the actor and model, known not only for his good looks but also for his natural charisma and genuine good nature. Gone is the chiselled, clean look and, in its place, we find a tough guy, a peroxide blonde who thinks nothing of being part of the shady world of drug dealing. Welcome to the world of Brimbu, as Davide’s character on Division 7 is called. It’s all fake, of course, and yet I’m sure that viewers find this switch from the eminently likeable Davide very fascinating. And this is exactly what I’m here to find out. How does Davide cope with it? Well, it appears, given the success that this latest role is garnering, that this is only possible also because the man is a natural at acting. Indeed, while it takes many people time for them to feel truly comfortable in the career paths they have chosen, the same cannot be said for Davide. “I find myself really at home in this environment. In many ways, I really do feel like I was created for it. Of course, everyone has their own calling but, when I’m acting, time really does go by too quickly.” Indeed, with numerous productions both local and foreign under his belt, it’s little wonder that Davide is in such hot demand. Challenging parts are not limited to the screen, and Davide has also had his fair share on stage, with productions such as Spring Awakening, the record-breaking Jien Nħobb, Inti Tħobb? and, more recently, the MADC production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream – not to mention other TV series like Katrina and Iċ-

should push more for its use in local productions.” Davide is actually one of those actors who has been able to give much back to the local scene, thanks to successful roles which have seen him play everything from a love interest to a visually impaired man. “For me, the most important aspect of acting is to be the character, as if I’m not acting at all. That said, I do believe that method acting in general has become a bit of a marketing ploy, because it is not the performance itself which is the focus, but the preparation for the role. I obviously have my own methods of getting lost in a role, but I do feel that many people are placing too much of an emphasis on a method which has been abused by many.” Unquestionably, Davide dedication to becoming the character he seeks to portray can clearly be seen in his latest role as the afore-mentioned Brimbu, in Jason Zerafa’s Division 7. For the show, Davide is transformed into a peroxide blonde and also has to undergo two hours of tattoo placement every time he has to be transformed into the man he describes as a joker with a troubled past. “I was going to take a year’s break to focus on my own projects before I took on this role. But, after I saw the script, I simply couldn’t resist something of such high production value and which would allow me to play such a different role from what I have done in the past. I’ve always been pulled to playing the outsider and I thrive on making each character psychologically different. I do this by doing a lot of research and actually building up a backstory for each character in my head. “I believe that in order to become the character, one must figure out their likes, Cowboy and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers

Unfortunately, despite the fact that Brimbu associated himself with super heroes when he was younger, this all takes a darker turn when the comic, geeky outcast realises that he may gain more by becoming a villain. “Up until the last couple of episodes of the first season, Brimbu was more of a joker than anything else. But now, the tables have turned.” Ironically, Brimbu could not be more different from Tucci himself. “The minute I wasn’t filming, I immediately dyed my hair back to its original colour because for me, the bleached hair was very much part of my Brimbu persona and had nothing to do with me.” “I am very, very different from him as a person. Not only do I not have ‘a past’, but I’m not really in the habit of using foul language, smoking, or drinking for that matter.” So how does he make it real? “Although I do draw from experience, it’s not just about that. I also study real characters that are similar to the people I need to portray. For me, the objective is always to unsettle the audience and to give it a different view of the world.” Speaking about the future, Davide is nothing if not enthusiastic: “I look forward to continuing Brimbu’s story and, eventually, to working on my own projects, while always being very excited to receive new ideas and scripts from new and existing directors and productions!” “I feel exceedingly blessed to live the kind of life I have because I am doing what I love. When I look at the future, I always think that it’s important to never say never to anything. I firmly believe that positivity attracts more positivity and that it is important to make the best out of everything, both good and bad, in life. Whatever happens, I am determined to learn and grow.”

Two´s company, three is a crowd OR IS IT? AS COUPLES WORLDWIDE GET READY TO CELEBRATE CUPID AND HIS TREACHEROUS ARROW, NATASHA SINGH WRITES ON LOVE, SEX, AND NONMONOGAMOUS RELATIONSHIPS. Jane Austen once said that there are as many forms of love as there are moments in time. Yet, on Valentine’s day, we usually only hear about one such form of love – that is, of the monogamous relationship between a man and a woman. The tradition of celebrating love on February 14 came from the myth of St Valentine, who was executed under the Roman Empire for performing illegal marriages, thus making it essentially a Western Christian tradition. Throughout history, the Christian tradition has promoted serial monogamy between a man and a woman as the epitome of perfect love, this is what has become the norm for most Western cultures. Man has evolved through time by challenging the paradigm of

Apart from this, many of us simply don’t know how to ask for what we want or need in a direct way, preferring to hint instead at what our true desire is. ISSUES

Never has the size of Maltese children been as closely scrutinised as it is at the moment. On the one hand as a nation we are, and should be, collectively worried about the fact that a comprehensive study carried out amongst all school children in 2016 found that 40 per cent of the children were overweight or obese. We are less aware than we should be about the youngsters who are suffering from an eating disorder and are risking their long-term health by not eating enough. As a nation, we are even less aware of the dangers of children and adolescents who are stressing themselves out trying to measure up to an impossible beauty ideal promoted by the media – an image so impossible and unrealistic that, not even the model looks like the picture. The question is what, if anything, is being done about this paradoxical collection of national health problems? Programmes and services aimed at helping children overcome

The Department of Education is adopting a ‘learning outcomes’ approach to the way subjects are taught in school. Thus, the focus is firmly on the level of skills and competences students are expected to attain. “We need to ensure that our programmes remain relevant to the students and that we continue to pass on positive messages and role models to our children, something that must be tackled across the entire curriculum. We have already extended our reach to target children at a very early age, before there is any sign of a problem and we must keep these programmes interesting for them. Perhaps, the most important development is that we have extended our focus beyond the school walls and we cooperate with strategic partners, because we cannot work in isolation. This is a practice we need to build on. We have come a long way from where we were a decade ago but there is still a long way to go and we can never say the job is finished,” concludes Desirée. It is unlikely that the problems associated with obesity or eating disorders will ever be fully eradicated from society but, adopting an attitude of ‘catch them whilst they’re young’ to instil the concept of a balanced lifestyle would appear to be the most logical way to ensure that these issues are at least contained.

An Unintended piece of theatre

THE PRODUCER BEHIND MALTA’S MOST DARING THEATRE COMPANY IS PRESENTING HIS OWN PLAY, SO RISQUÉ NO MALTESE ACTRESS BRAVED THE PART. ADRIAN BUCKLE GETS INTO A FRANK DISCUSSION WITH VERONICA STIVALA.

30 Sunday Circle ∫ FEBRUARY 2017

THEATRE

It comes as no surprise that Adrian Buckle’s self-penned play is as daring as so many of the productions presented by his own theatre company, Unifaun, have been. Buckle has mostly been known to the public as the producer behind this production house. But, egged on by the urge to be more creative, he “bit the bullet and decided to produce one of (his) own”. Unintended is the story of a boy who wants to take his girl to the school ball. He meets her at her house and waits while she gets ready. Then her parents turn up and the boy has to endure a nightmare as “taboo after taboo is smashed”. The production photos hint at violence and sex. “I think very little theatre excites me anymore,” confides Adrian, adding how he wanted to do something that kept him and the audience “on edge”. Despite Unifaun’s reputation for pushing the envelope, Adrian says he does not mean to shock, even that he hates it when a play shocks gratuitously. Adrian is adamant to stress he does not pander to pleasing audiences. “Many of my colleagues prefer to work on safe plays, plays they know will sell, plays they know will not cause a stir. They argue that this is what the public likes. This is what the public finds engaging. But the public also likes pornography. Pornography can be very engaging. Does this mean that we need to give them pornography? “To me,” he goes on, “art needs to be a catalyst for change. If a theatre piece does not challenge, and does not change, well then it is business, not art.” Quoting Umberto Eco, he notes: “People want to be challenged. They are tired of simple things.” And that is what he wants to do. Challenge them. The inspiration for this particular play came from a short play Adrian once read, but which he felt failed to reach its potential. The centre of the play is corruption of young people. Buckle consulted a psychologist to understand certain behaviours within young people. One thing he talked to Adrian about was a condition coined Acquired Helplessness, a form of depression that haunts some young people who go through difficult times. This inspired him to develop the main characters of the play. Adrian notes how he finds psychology fascinating and interesting, especially when applied to writing. This is not his first full-length play. However, it is the first he is producing. Looking into the near future, Unifaun has at least two plays written by Buckle lined up. Does Unifaun run the risk of becoming a vanity project? Adrian does not mince his words: “Unifaun is my indulgence in theatre,” he answers. “I do what I believe in.” Feeling inspired to write, to be more creative, Buckle is using his company to present his own creations and refine his writing in the process. “My inspirations are not philosophers and highbrow quotations,” he notes. Rather, he gets his inspiration from everyday life, from songs and lyrics, especially Depeche Mode, Muse and Peter Gabriel. “I write about life today. I like to create a narrative, rather than a character study. Unifaun has always been about what I like. I like to challenge my audiences. I like to be creative. I like to ask questions. I like to create hope. That will never change.” We discuss this issue of hope further. For Adrian, a good script asks questions. Pain and change are central themes of Unifaun’s work, which are tackled in order to make people question their reality. “Questions lead to change and change leads to hope. If I thought there was no hope left, I would stop doing theatre,” he says, quoting playwright Edward Bond. Curiously, while Adrian is Maltese speaking, he writes in English. “I write in English because I am unable to master the Maltese idiom,” he reveals. “I am a Maltese-speaking man and I love the Maltese language. But I think in English.” It is always so interesting to learn how a play came to be. Contrary to a play he is currently Photos: Darrin Zammit Lupi

writing, and which he has been writing for years, Unintended came to Adrian “in one go”. “I just started writing and surprised myself at how the story unfolded.”

Each one is completely unique and, often, very different to any of the others. That’s what makes them to interesting and exciting,” she says. The curator explains that she thoroughly enjoyed putting the exhibition together with the help of colleagues and collectors. “Whenever you start working on a project like this, you never know where the adventure is going to take you,” she smiles. “Patrimonju Malta, the foundation that runs Palazzo Falson, is connected to all sorts of collectors and they are always so welcoming of us. As a result, we have snuff boxes from the Heritage Malta National Collection, churches and priories, as well as from private collections. Every time I was kindly invited to go ‘see a box’ in a collection, I never knew if it was going to be a dud or a treasure; it certainly kept me on my toes.” Asked about her favourite snuff boxes, Francesca says it’s impossible to choose – although she does highlight some particularly interesting ones. For instance, there are some with hidden compartments that may have held secret codes or love letters.

36 Sunday Circle ∫ FEBRUARY 2017

“I guess we’ll never knows exactly what they were used for, but they were certainly up to something!” she says. Then there’s ones that tell a story – such as the snuff box with the picture of a Grandmaster on it. “We don’t know which Grandmaster it is, but it’s certainly a Grandmaster. We’re actually hoping that, upon seeing the exhibition, someone might come forward with information on his identity; adding public knowledge to our own knowledge is definitely one of the aspects I look forward to most… perhaps someone out there will recognise the Grandmaster from a painting they have in their own collection, and the mystery will be solved!” she adds. Finally, Francesca stresses how surprised she was by the sheer number of snuff boxes found locally – although she has a theory about why so many have survived. “Partly, I think they are of sentimental value, as people who have them in the collections now may remember their grandmother or grandfather using them decades ago. Beyond that, they’re also small and pretty, so they look great in a cabinet and don’t take up too much room! So it’s their blend of form and function that I imagine have led to so many of them still being around today which, of course, has been fantastic for this exhibition and for learning more about snuff boxes and their stories. I encourage everyone to come to take a look at this beautiful part of our national history,” she adds.

Snuff Boxes is a free exhibition within Palazzo Falzon. The exhibition is on from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-4.30pm until February 26. Francesca Balzan will lead a special gallery talk on February 17 at 3pm, which is open to the public.

Can you see the music?

WITH JUST A FEW DAYS TO GO BEFORE MODERN MUSIC DAYS’ RHYTHMS OF VISION HITS THE STAGE, IGGY FENECH SPEAKS TO SEVEN VISUAL ARTISTS TO UNDERSTAND HOW SOUND CAN BE TRANSLATED INTO IMAGERY.

On February 11, Rhythms of Vision will bring together 10 international composers and 10 visual artists in a celebration of interdisciplinary arts. A concert of 20th century and contemporary chamber music, the first event of 2017 for Modern Music Days is as ambitious as they come, as sounds, languages and images from as far afield as Japan, the Netherlands and America will play on the notions of space, acoustics and our understanding of them. Part of the team behind the highly-anticipated concert, which is being organised by the Manoel Theatre in collaboration with Valletta 2018 and the Malta Association for Contemporary Music, are the eight visual artists interviewed in this article, who have explained in painstaking detail the fascinating – and sometimes mind-boggling – process of turning a piece of music into a series of moving images.

Vince Briffa on creating the visuals for Olivier Messiaen’s Louange a l’Eternite de Jesus “Working visually to a musical composition is a constant process of negotiation. We live in a culture where the visual normally overpowers the auditory; therefore, one needs to clearly decide on where one pitches the work. Will the visual act as background or challenge the music? Will the concept behind the visuals be extracted from the musical theme or be totally extraneous? One needs to remember that, without it knowing, the audience is brought into the tensions and complexities of the cinematic form, where the experience touches all our senses. This performance, although within a different context and having the additional live element to it, will clearly be pegged to the cinematic culture we are so much accustomed to and also judged by its yardstick. “My work is entitled Small Amnesias, and it’s an attempt to rediscover beauty in the memory of the forgotten. It interweaves found

LEGENDARY THE GUARDIAN CARTOONIST STEVE BELL WAS RECENTLY IN MALTA TO PUT HIS TRADEMARK SATIRICAL TOUCH TO A VERY PARTICULAR FLOAT THAT WILL TAKE TO OUR STREETS DURING CARNIVAL FESTIVITIES. HE TELLS JOHNATHAN CILIA ABOUT HOW BEST TO ANNOY POLITICIANS. Judging from the year we’ve just left behind, the world has never been more ripe for satire. With an overgrown toddler soon to be running the US, parts of the European Union unravelling, and a seeming deluge of fake news assaulting – and insulting – humanity’s intelligence on a daily basis, a satirist can easily find a topic to eviscerate in this steamy environment. Satire can come in many forms, some more popular than the other. You’ve got TV shows like Saturday Night Live which delivers a dynamic audio/visual punch, articles and editorials that deliver an intellectual punch, and you’ve got the classic visual satire, the simple cartoons

Steve Bell with carnival guru Norman Hili, better known as Ċiċċo.

“Designing in 3D is quite difficult; I’m used to designing in 2D, in small print. It’s great though, it’s really good, the hard work – but the float’s design is still secret!” Considering his past work, the invitation of this satirist to imbue Malta’s only popular historical satirical event, to use the term broadly, with a bit of sharpness is apt. Steve’s caricatures of famous British politicians –Margaret Thatcher, John Major, David Cameron, to name just a few – have regularly gained national recognition, even going so far as to influence people’s view of these figures, often times cutting straight to the core of a person or issue. After all, this is the man who, upon the death of Margaret Thatcher, and amid outpourings of reverence from publications like the Daily Mail, drew ol’ Maggie descending into hell from her casket, simply asking - “Why is this pit still open”? But it wasn’t always so. Steve started off as an art teacher in Birmingham, but found himself to be “very unsuccessful as a teacher. So I resolved to be a cartoonist and, since I loved children’s cartoons, I applied to work at the Beano. However, I was

“I never really knew what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to do something useful,” he says clearly. “Capturing the character of a politician is quite difficult, as is finding what kind of character they really are and how to represent it. But then, sometimes, you do one and it just works.”

With Maltese politicians opening libel cases left right and centre, it seems their British counterparts are more used to the hazing. “Politicians in the UK generally accept that they are going to get the mickey taken out of them, and know that if they object they’ll look silly,” Steve says. Sometimes, his caricatures cut a bit too close to the bone. With the advent of David Cameron in the 2000’s, sporting his youthful looks and a hairless face, Steve thought it opportune to start drawing Cameron as a jellyfish. However, genius struck soon after. “Cameron had said at one point ‘I’ll cut the deficit, not the NHS’ and this was plastered alongside Cameron’s head on the

What is CITES? The CITES is one of the most relevant international agreements in the field of species conservation. The aim of the Convention is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants is not a threat to their survival. Thousands of species are internationally traded and used by people in their daily lives as tourist souvenirs, food sources, health care and cosmetics products and for fashion. CITES works through a system of permits and certificates that must be obtained and authorised before international trade in specimens of species covered by the Convention can actually take place. The species covered by CITES are listed in three Appendices (I, II and III), according to the level of protection they need. Around 5,600 species of animals and 30,000 species of plants Elephant-foot tree

Poor people and smiling children THEIR COUNTRY STILL RAVAGED BY THE DICTATORSHIP OF POL POT, THE INHABITANTS OF CAMBODIA STILL FEEL THE ILL EFFECTS AS CHILDREN SCOUR THE STREETS SCAVENGING FOR RUBBISH TO EXCHANGE FOR CASH. WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB SAMMUT. If one were to ask me how to describe Cambodia or, more specifically, its capital city Phnom Penh, I would describe it as a city of rich people, poor people and smiling children. It is amazing to see how after all this country has gone through – the suffering, the inhumane abuse and total poverty – the smiles are never-ending, especially on the faces of the children. The condition in which Cambodia is in nowadays is the result of having a madman such as Pol Pot take over a country for over three decades. But, 39 years later and there I was, in Phnom Penh, still experiencing the legacy of the Khmer Rouge. Step by step I went over the rickety, rotten wood which formed

Chen SreyMech, or Mech as she asked me to call her in short, was my guide on this particular day, leading me to a particular slum, the same one in which she lives. I stood in front of a two story hut, its entry standing at nearly three quarters of my height. And, at 5ft 8”, I am not that tall. I crouch down and started making my way in. At the entrance, two women sit on the floor, the older one preparing food, while the other one chatted away. They both greeted me with a smile. Mech headed on inside the house, as I gingerly prepared to take the first step. The younger lady said something in Khmer I did not understand, but I could figure out her hand gestures. I saw her pointing to the floor, and I presume that she wants me to step through that section. Clearly, I got this completely wrong and, as soon as I put my foot down, I could feel the wood giving way. A little bit more pressure and my leg would have gone through. I smiled back, embarrassed to put it mildly and, bumping my head a few times I made my way the other side of the room. Finally, we made it to what seemed to be Mech’s kitchen. the elevated stilt path that lead through the huts. Beneath the

WORLD ISSUES

These are the conditions that the inhabitants of the slums in Phnom Penh live in. And, once circumstances put you there, it is very difficult to get out. Because, of course, living in the slums is not free. You still need to pay rent for the land, which truth be told is not cheap as prices vary from $15 to $30 a month. Sounds like a little? How difficult is it to make this kind of money, you may ask. Just picture this: four shopping trollies worth of empty bottles of water are typically recycled by scavengers in return for $2 payment. Even if you were to do all that every day for a month, you will only earn a maximum of $60, out of which you have to pay rent and also have enough left over for food for a family of six. The only way out from the slums is, in reality, education, but this is where it the difficulty arises. Parents can’t afford to send their children to school because they do not have the resources for it, or because the parents work and need someone to take care of the youngest child at home. Or, maybe even because the parents send the children to scavenge so that they can make more money so that the family can survive. So, all in all, it is a vicious circle. Cambodia may have been forgotten by many, but there are some people who still help all over the world, even here in Malta. NGOs such as Les Restaurants des Enfants (LRDE) a restaurant that offers food, clothing, baths and basic medicine to the children of the slums in Phnom Penh as well as offers in helping the children getting sponsors and education, or Sacrifice Families

& Orphans Development Association (SFODA), an orphanage that cares for over 50 girls and boys and offers them an education as well as sponsorship. If there is any way you would like to help certain organisations or, who knows, sponsor a child local NGO Do Project may be able to assist you in helping the children and give you even more details.

Mech’s story Mech is one of the teenagers I met while in Cambodia and, like most of the children and youngsters living in the slums of Phnom Penh, she has a story to tell. Never would you imagine that this bubbly, and always-smiling 17-year-old, lost both parents to HIV at the age of six within the span of a year. As they could not afford living in the provinces any more with both parents gone, her grandmother took her and her two siblings to Phnom Penh in the hope of getting the children into a school. Still, money was an issue and Mech and her siblings became scavengers. Throughout the days and nights she would prowl the dangerous streets in search of water bottles or tin cans. She would look through garbage cans and bins for any scraps of copper. All this, in order to exchange for money so as to have enough to buy food for the family, as well as to pay rent. With her siblings, she spent six months scavenging until she was discovered by members of LRDE, who found sponsors for her and her family. Now, Mech can go to school and is provided for as long as she continues her studying, while also doing her own part helping the Children of Cambodia by becoming a helper at LRDE herself.

Give Wenzu a new life

Wenzu is one of the abandoned house cats currently in care at the CSAF sanctuary. He is loyal, appreciative and intelligent, communicates and can be very entertaining. Though courageous and determined, he is rapidly losing his strength due to separate infections. Wenzu needs individual care and meticulous hygiene by a dedicated carer. Dr Angelica Fenech, the sanctuary’s vet would supply all vet support and medical requirements during his recovery period. Wenzu is currently being fostered in a very nice home where, he will be looked after as best as can

be. Borg Cardona Co ltd., in collaboration with Royal Canin, are sponsoring Wenzu with food and other products that he needs to recover as quickly as possible. Wenzu is looking for a forever, loving home once he is healthy again. Contact CSAF should you wish to help make the life of these loving cats better.

SIX MALTESE ARTISTS CHOSEN TO CAPTURE THE ART OF AVERNA

Six Maltese artists were chosen to capture the Art of Averna in a campaign to promote the worldwide special edition release of Don Salvatore, an original recipe limited to only 1,868 bottles worldwide. Young artists Nadine Noko, Glenn Ellul, Gulja Holland, Rebecca Bonaci, Alia Pavia and Andreas Azzopardi, were each commissioned to produce an artwork in their style entitled The Art of Averna. The rich story of Averna dates back to the year 1868, when Don Salvatore Averna, a successful textile merchant from Sicily, produced the first Amaro Averna for his household guests. The secret recipe of this herbal, alcoholic elixir was given to Don Salvatore by Frà Girolamo, a Benedictine friar, some years earlier. A forgotten barrel of Amaro Averna crafted in its antique recipe with 34% abv and laid for 21 months in oak has now been unveiled, limited to 1,868 individually numbered bottles worldwide. Only 70 bottles of Don Salvatore are available for sale in Malta, giving only a few people the chance of a lifetime to taste the original recipe of their favourite digestivo. Don Salvatore is available in Malta from Red October, Mdina Road, Qormi at €70 per bottle. Trade enquiries: 2147 0400. www.facebook.com/RedOctoberMalta ; www.redoctobermalta.com/averna-do nsalvatore
