THE POLITICAL FIELD
Politics are a game to satirists The Capitol Steps

rimary season—especially this one—is always interesting for political satirists The Capitol Steps. It’s a time when the Donald Trumps come out of the woodwork, and other candidates, like Hillary Clinton, re-emerge. “This primary season happened earlier than others,” says founding member Elaina Newport. “This time, four years ago, we were just starting to see the Herman Cains and the new candidates emerge. This year, we already have 16, 17 on the Republican side.” The Capitol Steps, which performs Friday, November 27, and Saturday, November 28, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, is never hurting for material, Newport says.
“It’s so fun,” she says. “It’s kind of like every time you think there isn’t anything funny, suddenly Donald Trump announces his run for the presidency or someone tweets his underwear.” The group formed in 1981 when it came together to perform at a Christmas party for its employer, Charles Percy of Illinois. “The joke that we’ve made is, we couldn’t do a traditional nativity scene because we work in the senate,” he says. “There was no one to play three wise men or a virgin. “We were invited to perform at the White House. We just basically thought, at first, we would do this for one party. But nobody has told us to stop. Thirtyfour years later this Christmas, The
Capitol Steps is still going.” Ironically, the complaints about the show have been few and far between, she says. The politicians rather like being the butt of jokes. “The politicians have invited us to perform,” Newport says. “They’re good sports. I think they’re almost flattered. I think the most angry anybody ever got was one senator was upset because we didn’t have a song about him. He was in the audience and said, ‘What about me?’ I told him, if you get in a scandal, we’ll think about it.” One of Newport’s favorite topics was Ronald Reagan because of his history as an actor. “He brought this whole cast of characters with him,” Newport says. “We
had a song called ‘Mine Every Mountain’ because he had these environmental policies. He was hilarious and a good sport.” She called Bill and Hillary Clinton, though, “the gifts to comedians.” “I couldn’t have made up those stories,” she says with a laugh. “Comedy is exaggeration, but he was so funny anyway. He’s was such a larger-than-life figure. The scandals he got in, you couldn’t make up.”

DASH TO DECADENCE
The Hot Chocolate 5K and 15K sweetens the motivation to finish a race Christina Caldwell » The Entertainer!
T
he holiday season is not without its decadence, but here in the Valley, things are a little different. As those in colder climates around the country resign to stay inside and keep warm, our “cold” weather is perfect for a chilly, snow-free run, which means we can pack in the sweets without consequence to our waistlines. Sorry, rest of America. That pretty much makes the Valley the best place to be come December, and Scottsdale’s Hot Chocolate Run is out to combine tasty treats and exercise, all in one seriously sweet race on Sunday, December 6. Who wants to chase a carrot, anyway? At the Hot Chocolate Run, the motivation to finish is so much sweeter. The 5K and 15K race will begin at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick and will wind throughout Scottsdale, with chocolate chip, Tootsie Roll and marshmallow stations treating runners along the way, finally culminating in a post-race party with chocolate fondue, a kids zone, merchandise tent, and of course, rich, rewarding hot chocolate. This is one of the most popular themed races in the country, with over 200,000 participants nationwide since its 2008 Chicago inception. Hurry to register because spots are filling up fast. The fourth

wave of registration ends November 15, with the 5k for $49 and the 15K for $69, after which the price will increase to $54 and $74 respectively. To sweeten the deal, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities, so you can feel good that you gave back, even if drinking hot chocolate is hardly a chore. So bundle up, stretch it out and prepare to live a full day of deliciousness without the guilt.

THE ENTERTAINER! MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2015
S
am Hunt is an unlikely country star. His debut album, Montevallo, isn’t exactly a study in the genre’s music, but it and Hunt have become breakout stars. Even Chris Matthews, assistant program director for the country station KMLE, questioned it briefly—but wholeheartedly believes in the strapping former college football player. “It’s very interesting and, by all accounts, it shouldn’t have happened,” says Matthews, who doubles as the midday on-air personality. “You wouldn’t look at this on paper and say, ‘God this makes sense. This is going to be huge.’” But Hunt defied doubters, taking his blend of country, hip-hop, rock and pop music to score four singles since 2014: “Leave the Night On,” “Take Your Time,” “House Party” and, most recently, “Break Up in a Small Town.” “If you listen to that album, there are very, very few things that sound country,” Matthews says. “With the climate of the format today and the different kinds of music, it has found a place on country radio. “It’s catchy enough. It’s poppy enough. It’s just different and unique enough that it really resonates. Plus, the fact that he’s 6-feet-4 and gorgeous doesn’t hurt with the ladies. It’s the perfect storm of something new and different and it’s taken off.” It couldn’t have been any clearer when Hunt supported Lady Antebellum and Hunter Hayes at Ak-Chin Pavilion on July 11. Fans packed the summer shed long before Hunt’s 7 p.m. showtime, yearning to get a glimpse of him. Matthews says he hasn’t seen that sort of response since a fledgling band named Florida Georgia Line served as an early opener “before they really blew up.” “Now here they are headlining,” he says of FGL. Hunt will most likely be in that position by the end of 2016. He’s been to Phoenix a handful of times in 2015, playing the DirecTV Super Fan Festival in January, a Scottsdale block party in the spring and with Lady Antebellum. He will return once again this year, this time to play “KMLE 107.9’s Not So Silent Night” on Thursday, December 3, at Comerica Theatre. He already has a gig scheduled for next year: He’ll perform during the all-day “Spread the Love” tour stop with Kenny Chesney and Miranda Lambert at Chase Field on Saturday, May 7. Matthews says it was a no-brainer for KMLE to book Hunt for the Comerica Theatre concert.
17
“He was somebody who we realized [was a draw] when we saw research scores just through the roof on this guy,” he says. “The first single, ‘Leave the Night On,’ remains one of our strongest testing songs. ‘Take Your Time’ took that to the next level.” It’s a mutually beneficial partnership. KMLE gets yet another big name attached to the show, which also includes performances by Lee Brice, Old Dominion, Jerrod Niemann and Chase Rice. Hunt, in turn, gets increased exposure. “We were able to catch him on the way up,” Matthews says. “With guys like this who shoot up so quickly, it’s really valuable to get him at this stage. We hope to make a connection with him. ‘We supported everything you’ve done. We believe in you and we know that it’s going to be an amazing show.’ “We were fortunate enough to be able to lock him in on this date. With his schedule over the next year—the next 12 to 18 months—Sam Hunt is going to continue to climb.” Hunt is juggling family obligations, touring and the recording of a new album. Matthews says a new collection isn’t quite necessary—yet. “I don’t think we’re done with this album,” he says. “I think there are one or two more songs that could be singles. All of the ladies in our building here, the females I have spoken to love ‘Ex to See’ and are waiting for that to be released.” The KMLE show will be a little different for fans and Hunt. Matthews calls the gig “power acoustic” and its direction was refocused after Lee Brice was added to the bill. “Jerrod Niemann and Lee Brice are pals—like real good, good friends. Like trouble together,” he says. “Sam Hunt and Chase Rice were on the road when they were first getting started. Old Dominion were writing songs for established artists. “We’re going to capitalize on the uniqueness and the chemistry that’s going to happen on that stage. We’re doing it guitar-pool style, with Sam, Chase, Jerrod and Lee on stage at the same time—just hang on for the ride.”

10 things we’re excited about now that the weather has cooled off in the Valley Breanne DeMore » The Entertainer!
W
hen someone from Minnesota or Wisconsin sees that the high for the day will be 88 degrees, they probably think, “Whew— warm day ahead.” When someone in Phoenix sees that the high for the day will be 88 degrees, we think, “WOOHOO! Break out the scarves!” It’s almost painfully cliché to talk about how long it stays so hot here in the Valley, but the truth is that it really does affect our daily lives quite a bit. Now that the thermometer (most likely) will stay away from the 90s for the next five or six months, here are the things that we are very excited about being able to do now that it is finally fall.
1
Wearing a colored shirt
Think this one is odd? Think again. Only the bravest among us wear a gray, green or any other color shirt besides white or black during the summer. Walking from the car to the office no longer has us checking our pits constantly!
Hiking after 6 a.m.
A Saturday morning hike at a leisurely 10 or 11 a.m. is now a possibility and our sleeping schedules couldn’t be more grateful.
8
Drinking something warm or hot
It’s an oddly good feeling to be able to order a hot tea or coffee in the afternoon.
Looking forward to the warmest part of the day
You know when you step outside at 3 p.m. and the sun hits your face? That doesn’t feel good in August, but it is amazing in December.
Wearing boots (and long sleeves, sweaters, pants, etc.)
9
Finally, you can bust out your cooler weather clothes and add a much-needed mix-up to your stale summer wardrobe.
Going to the farmers’ market
We love fresh, local produce and artisan products as much as the next guy, but it is so much easier to head to the farmers’ market when it is 75 degrees outside.
Eating on the patio of the restaurant
10
Combine this one with numbers 2 and 4 and you’ve got yourself an active and beautiful Saturday or Sunday morning/early afternoon. (Feel free to take pictures and send them to your East Coast friends to rub it in.)
Opening our windows and doors
There is something so whimsical about being able to hang out inside with the windows and/or doors open to the fresh air.
Taking advantage of the canal system
The canal system not only carries water from the Salt River to all reaches of the Valley, but it also provides a great recreational space. Now that it is finally cool enough, we can’t wait to use the canals’ paved sides for walking, jogging, biking and searching for shells with the kiddos. Check out srpnet.com/water for more information including maps and origins.
2
Walking to brunch or dinner
The Valley is so spread out that this one might not seem feasible for a lot of us, however, even if the closest restaurant is a mile or two away, get walking and make your meal your reward for getting there. Your body will thank you.

A WRITER’S
: My all DREAM WHAT I BRING TO THE TABLE
Combining music and writing prowess, Mitch Albom achieves life’s dream Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!
M
itch Albom has been a celebrated columnist for the Detroit Free Press for decades, having become a journalist after failing to make it as a musician. The author of six consecutive No. 1 New York Times bestsellers is now melding his two loves—music and writing—with “The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto.” The book is the first ever to have a soundtrack created for it. “We have the final copies of it,” Albom says enthusiastically about the recording. “They’re going to print a CD— it’s not just digital. They’re going to have a digital version as well as an actual one you can touch. My dream has come true. I wanted to get into the music business 35 years ago and I’ve finally broken through.” The book tells the story of Frankie Presto, a fictional guitar player, whom Albom dubs the best to ever walk the Earth. “It begins at his funeral,” Albom explains. “He’s died
JENNY RISHER
and the spirit of music comes to his funeral to take back the talent that he was given when he was born. [In the book] when you come out of the womb, before you open your eyes, the little fists grab these different colors in front of you. Whatever your fist grabs, that’s your talent.” Readers will follow Presto from his 30s as he embarks on a music career that includes chance meetings with Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. The soundtrack is a likely companion to “The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto.” The track listing features original songs by current recording artists including Ingrid Michaelson, Mat Kearney, Sawyer Fredericks and Phredley Brown that were co-written with Albom. The soundtrack, which hits stores on Friday, November 6, also boasts a number of previously released fan favorites that feature prominently in the novel. Albom admits he’s a little nervous about the book’s release, as “The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto” is a departure from his bestselling pieces, which include “Tuesdays with Morrie.” “It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever tried,” Alborn says. “It’s probably twice as big as the normal books that I write. The biggest sweeping story that I’ve ever tried to write. I never wrote about music. I’ve been waiting my whole life to write this book.”

F
rida Kahlo was an influential Mexican painter who was best known for her colorful and authentic self-portraits. She married to fellow famous painter, Diego Rivera, and was a strong feminist icon in the early 20th century until her death in 1954. Kahlo started painting to pass the time when a bus accident in her childhood left her bedridden for months at a time. The Heard Museum is presenting the “Frida Kahlo—Her Photos” exhibition, curated by Mexican photographer and photo historian,Pablo Ortiz Monasterio from Saturday, October 31, through Monday, February 8, and our unibrow is sprouting at the thought. The collection by the Frida Kahlo Museum features over 240 images that
are part of the Blue House Archive. The photographs, along with some of Kahlo’s personal items were kept away in a room until 2007 inside of the Blue House where she lived for most of her life. The photos are organized into subjects such as The Origins, The Blue House, Politics, Revolutions and Diego, Her Broken Body, Frida’s Loves and Photography to commemorate significant happenings in her life. The exhibit will allow visitors to take a closer look inside the famous painter’s life. The photographers include Man Ray, Martin Munkácsi, Edward Weston, Nickolas Muray, Lola Alvarez Bravo and many others. The collection illustrates Kahlo through her early childhood all the way to her life as an artist. Through the photos, visitors can learn about Kahlo from a whole new perspective.

JOSEPH’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH
“My All American”
“My All American” will not only make you stand up and cheer; it will also rejuvenate your hope. The new football flick from the writer of “Rudy” and “Hoosiers” is much more about the human spirit than it is about the sport. Granted, there are plenty of scenes set on the field that will energize genre fans, but it is the story’s heart that will resonate with most moviegoers—and make them a crying wreck as they walk out of the theater. It is a charmingly old fashioned and extremely emotional movie that encourages you to never ever give up. RANDY’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH
“Tales of Halloween”
Halloween is now a distant memory. “Tales of Halloween” will come and go from the few select theaters it played faster than you can say “trick or treat;” but thanks to the modern day miracle of Video on Demand, you can see it anytime—even on Thanksgiving Day! The movie is a campy and possibly future holiday classic; an anthology of stories taking place in the same town on Halloween. Fun is to be had with cameo appearances and an old-school feel. A must for genre fans and a worthy watch for those that aren’t. M.V.’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH
“Pan”
This prequel to Peter Pan, focusing on Peter’s early friendship with the young Hook (Garrett Hedlund), hasn’t been well received. But I enjoyed this cheeky, imaginative spectacle. Peter (Levi Miller), a foundling at an orphanage in London, is spirited off by an airborne pirate ship during the Blitz, taken to Neverland, and forced to mine pixie dust for the despotic Blackbeard the Pirate (the brilliant Hugh Jackman) along with throngs of other boys. At times it has an almost Bollywood feel, and it seems safe to say it’s the first version of Peter Pan that quotes Nirvana and The Ramones.

THE VOICE OFA GIRL A chat with ‘He Named Me Malala’ director Davis Guggenheim Jasmine Kemper » The Entertainer!
M
alala Yousafzai, a normal teenage girl from the Swat Valley in Pakistan, spoke out against the Taliban by saying girls should be educated. She became a target and was shot in the head on the way home from school in October 2012. Now, at 18 years old, she is an advocate for girls’ education all around the world and is the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Academy Award-winning director and producer Davis Guggenheim spent over a year in Birmingham, England with Malala and her family to bring her story to life. His past works include “Waiting for Superman” and “An Inconvenient Truth,” which won an Oscar for Best Documentary in 2007. The Entertainer! spoke with Guggenheim about his favorite moments with Malala and how her courage is influencing young girls all over the world. The Entertainer!: What effect do you think the story will have on others, especially on women and young

THE ENTERTAINER! MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2015
girls? Do you think girls all over the world can relate to her story? Guggenheim: Whenever I make my movies I want to visualize who the audience will be. So when I made “Inconvenient Truth,” I thought of my cousins who live in Ohio, a swing state. And I wanted the movie to convince them. It wasn’t enough to make a movie that played to people who already agreed with me, I wanted to make a movie that kind of actually did some good in changing minds and make people realize that climate change is real. When I made this movie, I made the movie imagining my own two daughters watching it. I’m a father. I have two daughters. I imagined a girl in the Valley in Los Angeles. I imagined a Japanese girl in Tokyo. I imagined a girl, a Pashtun girl in the Swat Valley watching it. To me I wanted the story to speak to girls. I wanted girls to feel like this was their story. That sounds odd, because, of course, I’m a 51-year-old man who’s not them. So what I did was I did these extensive interviews with Malala and her father, mostly Malala, and tried to make the movie—my
process was to help her tell her own story so that it felt like it was told from the voice of a girl and from her perspective. So my dream is that girls feel like it’s their movie and they own it. This weekend or next weekend they tell their parents, I want to go see this movie or they tell their friends or their boyfriend or their family, I want to go see this. What was your favorite moment with Malala and her family? My favorite moment. That’s a good question. There’s so many. In all my movies that I’ve ever made, I’ve never felt so close to a family before and there’s a lot of love exchanged between my family and her family. My kids are close with their kids. So there’s not one moment particularly, but just the sense of— It’s really kind of corny, but you—telling a story has a way of bridging barriers and this experience for me is to meet this family from the other part of the world with a religion I didn’t quite understand, a culture I didn’t quite understand. That was a beautiful thing for me to know this family and to open my mind.
41
A large portion of the film focuses on Malala’s everyday life with her friends and family. I was wondering if one of your objectives of the movie was to give Malala a chance to just be a normal teenage girl rather than this international speaker and advocate? Yes. I mean, first of all, my experience was walking into their home that this is a really fun, joyful place and I didn’t realize that their family was just like my family. Even though they’re a Muslim family from 7,000 miles away from my home, they were arm-wrestling and teasing each other. Malala was like any other girl— opening up her laptop and looking at pictures of Brad Pitt. It was really important to me to show that side of her. That she’s just a normal girl. It’s too easy for us to make our heroes untouchable and put them on a pedestal. Well, I could never be like her. Truth is she is just an ordinary girl who became famous because she was brave and she made an extraordinary choice in her life to speak out.

DUELING DINERS:
HARD ROCK CAFE
En garde! Our Dueling Diners love each other when they’re not reviewing restaurants, but when the meal comes, their flaws are fair game Christina Caldwell and Andrew Axelrod » The Entertainer!
ANDREW’S ACCOUNT:
CHRISTINA’S ACCOUNT: Andrew and I first got together five years ago, and I’ve been hearing about this damn mac and cheese ever since. Andrew had only ever gone to Hard Rock Cafe once, and their Twisted Mac, Chicken & Cheese has since become the stuff of legend. It has had time to build its reputation in his mind, and memories of spicy, creamy, totally rockin’ goodness frequently crept into his head, and as such, into my ears. Forget his admiration for Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan—this mac and cheese was the real, elusive rock star in his life. Since it’s been so long since he was last at Hard Rock Cafe, I figured the Twisted Mac was now as dead as JH and SRV. Downtown Phoenix is a bit of a ghost town on Tuesday nights, and since nothing was going on at Talking Stick Resort Arena, things felt a bit eerie. Maybe it was Roy Orbison’s motorcycle or Steven Tyler’s skull shirt that felt a bit spooky (OOOoooOOoo, cheap polyester!), but there was a feeling in the air that something had been resurrected. Then we looked at the menu. To our shock, like rock-and-rollers of years past, the Twisted Mac lives on at Hard Rock Cafe Phoenix. Still recouping from the blitz of cowboys from the Garth Brooks concert the previous weekend, our friendly server had no idea about the expectations that were placed on the food he’d deliver. Since it was already decided that WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM
Andrew would get the Twisted Mac, he suggested that we get the Spinach Artichoke Dip to start, because why get to the star of the show right away? Our opening act was the cheesy, delicious foreplay to Andrew’s cheesy, delicious main course with crispy, well-seasoned flatbread and ooey gooey, cheesy artichoke goodness. As regular readers of Dueling Diners know, Andrew operates on a diet of 50 percent meat and 50 percent cheese. However, my body operates on a human diet, so I went with the Grilled Norwegian Salmon entree, realistically not expecting much. I was wrong. The perfectly-cooked salmon was accompanied by a sweet-and-spicy, light barbeque sauce and a bit of butter to bring out its fattiness. But I have to admit, Andrew’s Twisted Mac was living up to its rock star reputation. The creamy cavatappi pasta shined with its spicy three-cheese stage presence, opening my world to a ton of rock-based food puns instantly. It was brash, it was sexy... it just rocked. Andrew and I rolled on out of there, and I’m not just saying that for the pun. After a cheese overdose, Andrew crumpled to the floor and forced me to roll his lifeless body to the car. “Try the Twisted Mac,” I recommended to other patrons as I apologized for rolling Andrew’s cheesefilled head into bar top tables. “But maybe save half of it for later.”
“Walk this way,” our server said as we entered Hard Rock Café. We were sat in a comfy booth and I surveyed the restaurant. I’m not the most sharp-dressed man, which is just fine for Hard Rock, a casually fun atmosphere where people can come together and find some satisfaction. On this crazy train of life, sometimes all you want is cheese, but Christina and I were at a crossroads. “The Spinach Artichoke Dip is sending me some good vibrations. What do you think?” I asked Christina. “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for,” she said. “Look, you can’t always get what you want. I’m ordering this appetizer with or without you.” I replied like a rambling man. Our appetizer arrived shortly and Christina prodded the cheese daintily like a virgin. I plowed right in, hungry like the wolf. An eruption of flavor, the spinach and artichoke dip is Hard Rock’s pride and joy. It’s a slow ride of creamy spinach and served with a parmesan flatbread. It was just what I needed. Looking over the menu for our main courses, the Twisted Mac, Chicken
Hard Rock Cafe Phoenix
& Cheese caught my eye like some kind of space oddity. I know, I know, we had just consumed a significant amount of cheese with our appetizer, but I was born to be wild. There was something in the air tonight and Christina denied her inner cheesy desires by ordering the salmon, attempting to appear classy like an L.A. woman. But I could see what her lyin’ eyes really wanted. Maybe I’m amazed easily, but the Twisted Mac, Chicken & Cheese was like cocaine. Just imagine free fallin’ into a southwest flavor bomb of parmesan and roasted red peppers. This dish will rock you like a hurricane and I was left comfortably numb. Christina’s salmon was made with a whole lotta love and sweet emotion. But behind blue eyes I could see she secretly wished she hadn’t been blinded by the light and ordered my entrée. Christina ain’t too proud to beg, but my meal was already gone. Who’s crying now? Profoundly satisfied, Christina and I got into our yellow submarine, piloted by a horse with no name and set off all along the watchtower before finally ascending the stairway to heaven. Barracuda.

GREAT BEER PAIRINGS:
PEDAL HAUS BREWERY
Forget about wine pairings! We hail the hop. We’re all about pairing our favorite craft brews with delicious dishes from Valley restaurants.
GO BELGIAN WITH THIS MUSSELS AND SAISON PAIRING FROM PEDAL HAUS BREWERY
“It’s a classic Belgian dish called ‘Moules Frites,’ which means mussels and fries. It’s traditionally a big bowl of mussels that’s cooked in this beer broth with a few spices added in there. You get some French fries as well, and they kind of soak up the broth and it’s awesome. We decided to get a really great Belgian style beer called Hennepin from Ommegang. It’s American made from New York but it’s a very classic-styled Belgian beer called Saison. It’s sort of a lighter ale, kind of gold in color and has a spicy flavor. We use that same beer in the broth for our mussels and fries. It’s steamed with this beer so it picks up a lot of the same flavor notes. You lose some of the fruitiness when you use it in the actual dish, so having it side-by-side, you’ll be able to see the harmoniousness of the flavors. The lighter Belgian style is a really good pairing for seafood dishes. With something like mussels, which is a milder seafood, you want to go with lighter beer—nothing that’s going to overwhelm your palate.” —Zach Fowle, Marketing Director

BEERTENDERS
Bartenders who really know their beer MIKE DRISCOLL, bartender at Mad Hatter Brew pub Jasmine Kemper » The Entertainer!
A
t Mad Hatter Brew Pub, craft beer is their specialty. Combine that with delicious food and a spacious patio and you’ve got the recipe for the perfect hangout spot. For beer expert Mike Driscoll, craft beer is more than a beverage—it’s a way of life. We asked him about his love of craft beer and why the Mad Hatter should be your next stop for an ice cold brew. What makes craft beer so special? For me there’s definitely more taste to it. I think also people know it’s not getting mass produced. When you get mass produced beer it’s not getting the same care. They’re not developing it the same way. With craft beer, you know there are a couple guys who literally took weeks and weeks to make that beer special. How did you get interested in beer? My old man ran a bar growing up so I was always hanging out in bars. It’s kind of a natural thing for me. I started drinking it when I got into college and started work-
ing in bars and was like “Damn, this stuff is pretty good.” Why is Mad Hatter a great place for craft beer lovers? Because we rotate our taps. We have eight taps and we rotate them all the time. So you could have a beer that you really love and we’re probably not going to have it on for more than a month before we give something else a shot. We’ll bring it back, but we rotate the taps constantly. Right now, the one that’s been on there the longest is the Mad Hatter Amber from Odell and the Founders IPA. What is your favorite part about the craft beer culture? Talking to people who understand the beer process. The beer tastings are probably the best part because we get to meet all the owners—the guys that brew the beer. For example, the guy that runs Four Peaks is in here all the time talking to us and giving us tastes of new stuff. We have a good relationship with them. It’s nice to have that access.

BREW
BROS A day in the life of two SanTan Brewing Company brewers Dave Clark » The Entertainer!
A
s craft beer continues its rise in popularity, and with a new brewery opening virtually every day across the United States, brewers have, at times, risen to celebrity status. They are the stars of the beer festival; the people that everyone wants to meet and get their picture taken with. But is it all fun and games being a brewer? We interviewed Chase Saraiva and Nick Pauley of SanTan Brewing Company, Arizona’s second-largest craft brewery, to give us some insight on what it is like in a typical day in the life of a brewer. The Entertainer!: What made you want to become brewer? Pauley: It’s very interdisciplinary, involving many different fields such as biology, chemistry and physics. I like the adrenaline rush from brewing since you are always multi-tasking. Saraiva: It’s cool to be part of something that shaped early civilizations way back when. Brewing is a very “circular” activity. You get ingredients from the earth to make the beer (grain, yeast, water, hops). The beer kept early civilizations alive when potable water was unavailable. Byproducts of the grain can be fed to livestock which later feeds us, in the form of steaks and burgers; thus very circular. What is something the average person doesn’t know about being a brewer? Saraiva: Cleaning and sanitation can be 90 percent of our job. Brewing is about WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM
cleaning, cooking and reading. Besides all the cleaning and sanitizing we do, we “cook” our beer in the form of mashing then boiling, usually in pretty warm temperatures here in Phoenix. And the reading part is ongoing. We are always studying to learn more. That part never stops, but it’s a great part of being a brewer. Another misconception about brewers that I can refute is that we don’t drink beer on the job all day as many people would assume. But a beer after work is always a great way to end the day. What’s up with the beard fascination among the brewing community? Saraiva: It’s probably just a fad but it binds brewers together; makes them recognizable. It’s really more of perceived notion that brewers are “manly” outdoorsmen—basically the opposite of a business executive—so in effect, separating themselves from the corporate America look, being anti-establishment. Pauley: As a former desk job engineer, this is my way of being anti-establishment. It’s either long hair, tattoos or beards, and since I’ve already had long hair, this is the natural next progression. How did you get your start in brewing? Pauley: I started as a homebrewer. I joined a homebrew club, S.N.O.B. of Cleveland, Ohio, where I was from. I thought beer was awesome and I wanted to find a way to turn my passion into my job. Being engineering-minded, I found there was a lot of engineering in beer. I absorbed all I could from fellow homebrew
club members and other local brewers. I continued to hone my skills homebrewing, then I got a job at Thirsty Dog Brewing Company in Akron, Ohio working in the brewery (but not brewing). I finished my engineering degree then I went on to the Siebel Brewing Academy in Chicago and received my brewing degree. SanTan Brewing Company ... recruited me. I accepted the job and relocated and have been brewing there now for almost a year. Saraiva: I started homebrewing as well. But I decided I wanted to get into beer professionally even before I started homebrewing. I went to college with the goal of being a dentist. Seeing teeth all day didn’t seem as appealing when push came to shove, and I decided to follow a path I would truly enjoy. Beer was something I truly enjoyed and decided to follow that path, learning all I could as quickly as possible.
What is your favorite beer to drink at SanTan? How about outside of SanTan? Pauley: Favorite SanTan beer is Lemon Bar White IPA. My favorite beer outside our portfolio would have to be Saison du Pont because I love saisons, especially the signature black pepper notes in that beer along with the crisp refreshing character, which is perfect in this climate. I’m also a big fan of the Chimay Grand Cru. Saraiva: Favorite SanTan beer is Experimental Hop 06300 IPA, a single hop IPA we did last winter. My favorite beer outside our portfolio would have to be Cantillon Kriek, though it’s quite difficult to find. My favorite readily available beer has to be Orval, one of the original seven Trappist Breweries.

FREE TO BE M.E. Melissa Etheridge finds freedom in newfound independent career
Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!
M
elissa Etheridge has never felt so free. After being signed to a major label deal for most of her career, Etheridge is now doing things her way, and to celebrate, named her latest album, This is M.E. “The whole experience is different,” Etheridge says. “It’s my first independent record, and I’m doing that in a whole different way—starting with the budget.
“It used to be I’d get a budget from the record company. I’d write songs and find a producer. Now you don’t have that money up front.” Now she’s rethought the financial end of it, and has partnered with producers to collaborate on songs and releases. In return, she gives them “back end.” “I wasn’t used to collaborating that much,” she says. “With some people, it didn’t work. The ones I worked with were amazing.”
69
Her newfound freedom allowed her to explore uncharted territory, namely her R&B and soul roots. “I just loved that,” she says. “That’s where some of these sounds came from— the lush production. The songs are still me. That’s why I called it This is M.E. This is no more me than anything, even though it might sound different.” When she performs Friday, November 13, at Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino’s Ovations Live Showroom, Etheridge will show an even more different side of her—that of an acoustic musician. “When I make a song, I have to be able to stand on stage by myself and make this song and love it and enjoy it and share it with the audience,” she says. “It can’t be a gimmicky song. It has to be a real song. I create each one of them with that in mind. The solo tour is a unique way of presenting the songs. “I’ve gotten much better at it now. I know what I’m doing. I have a looper, so I accompany myself a little bit more. It highlights my ability as a musician. I think a lot of people might not be aware of the type of guitar player I am.” Etheridge says she enjoys showcasing these skills at casinos, which have become premier venues over the last decade. “The casinos have really stepped up,” explains Etheridge, who has already begun work on a new album. “It used to be that, ‘Oh you’re playing a casino. It’s the bottom of the line. “But casinos have made theaters that people can go to that are really great.” It’s rooms like those and the rabid fans they hold that makes her career worthwhile. “I love it,” she says about her career. “I will always love it and continue to love it. I’m so grateful for being able to make music for a living. When you have gratitude and enjoyment, it stays fresh. Every few years, I change musicians and approach songs different. But that’s how I keep it fresh.”

THE WIPEOUT RUN Getting beat up has never been so fun
Christina Caldwell » The Entertainer!
I
t might not be everyone’s idea of a good time, but thousands of people audition to be on ABC’s “Wipeout” each year, hoping to be hit, bounced and catapulted their way to $50,000. Even more people watch and wish they were there. If you’ve ever thought, “I’d like a shot at those big balls,” now’s your chance. For the first time in Phoenix, the Wipeout Run is bringing 5K worth of wrecking balls, sweepers, foam and more to Phoenix on Saturday, November 14, so strap on your goofiest costume and your dunkworthy shoes, because things are about to get awesomely brutal. The course is set up to be as accurate to the show as possible, with a few exceptions. For the most part you don’t need to worry about being utterly obliterated by a fast-moving sweeper the same way you do on the show, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a challenge. The list of obstacles is nearly endless, so while a 5K might sound like exercise, the Wipeout Run keeps you focused on the fun as you take on a foam-soaked slipand-slide, the smash wall, a giant drop slide and more. Move at your own pace or try to be the first runner to finish. (Either way, we’re certain that the obstacles will insist on changing your plans.)
And for those who want to be challenged, be sure not to skip the monkey bars and rope hang, which kind of make the race a cross between “Wipeout” and “American Ninja Warrior.” After you get thoroughly wrecked, drop by the post-race festival for food and refreshments. Take souvenir photos with your newfound arch nemeses—the big balls and sweepers. Part of the fun of the Wipeout Run is that there’s virtually no real-world way to train for the obstacles, so prepare to take on the unexpected (and the bizarre!) this month.

UofA football players tackle charitable work off the field Israel Gonzalez » Special to The Entertainer!
ZACH HEMMILA Hemmila played football and lacrosse for Chandler High School. As a football player he was awarded All-Tribune First Team Offense honors and Arizona Republic All-Arizona Division I Second-Team honors. Like Werlinger, Hemmila was involved in the community throughout his four years at Chandler High. He called it some of the greatest experiences in his life. “It’s a great feeling seeing the smiles on people’s faces and making someone’s day,” Hemmila says. “There’s no better feeling out there.” Hemmila is now 21 and a senior at UofA. While being a Wildcat, Hemmila has continued to give back via Boys & Girls Clubs, veterans programs and other opportunities. “Speaking with veterans is my favorite way to get involved—just listening to veterans and meeting older people,” Hemmila says. “My mom is a nurse, so it hits home meeting with veterans.”
ZACH WERLINGER Werlinger played quarterback for Basha High School all four years, setting multiple school records including most career passing touchdowns and yards, and most touchdowns in a season. Even with all this, his off-the-field success might even be more impressive. Werlinger was president of the National Honor Society at Basha, possessed a weighted 4.56 GPA his senior year and earned many honors, such as Sports360AZ First Team AllAcademic roster. He was recognized as one of five National Football Foundation National High School Scholar-Athlete honorees. “Academics have always been important to me,” Werlinger says. “It’s important as a student athlete to be the best academically as well as on the field.” Besides landing good grades, WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM
Werlinger has worked more than 100 hours of community service. “I started getting involved in high school because of National Honor Society and our football program,” Werlinger says. “I’m really glad I got into it. It’s a great way to meet people, connect with people and build friendships.” The 19-year-old UofA sophomore hasn’t forgotten his roots. “I grew up in Chandler. That’s home to me,” Werlinger says. Recently, Werlinger visited Cindy Bickley’s second-grade class at Tarwater Elementary School. There, Werlinger explained to students the importance of academics, leadership, responsibility and finding your passion. Not only did he motivate the students, but he inspired the teacher. “It is wonderful to have such a remarkable and humble role model in our Chandler community,” Bickley says. “My
youngsters were overjoyed with his visit. He is an inspiration to all.” Werlinger, who enjoys working with children, says football players have to accept their responsibilities as role models. “Whether you like it or not, when you’re a football player someone will look up to you,” Werlinger says. “I do the best I can to encourage young kids to get involved in school and community. I enjoy taking on the responsibility of helping kids.” A communications major with a focus in broadcasting, Werlinger plans to continue contributing to the community. He is grateful to have played football this long and, if the journey ends, he hopes to be a sports broadcaster. “Just work hard at whatever it is you love to do,” Werlinger says. “Always have a passion for what you do and it will bring a lot of joy.”
As a fifth grader, Zach Werlinger played football daily. Zach Hemmila grew up grasping for flags in faux gridiron games in the duo’s same hometown of Chandler. Both of them continued their paths to football, eventually receiving multiple honors in Chandler Unified School District high schools. Werlinger and Hemmila now play for the University of Arizona Wildcats as quarterback and offensive line, respectively. But it’s what they do off the field that they say is more important. Through it all, Werlinger and Hemmila haven’t forgotten about their community.
His mom, Linda Hemmila, pushed him to get involved in volunteer work as a youngster. “My mom is a big supporter of me getting involved,” Hemmila says. “She is one of the reasons why I got started and fell in love with helping the community.” Hemmila sees the value of focusing on education, because he understands the low chances of being drafted into the NFL. “Academics [are] very important to me. If you get injured on the field, you will have nothing to fall back on,” Hemmila says. “School is important and will make money; NFL football won’t unless you’re lucky.” Hemmila’s major is regional development with a minor in business. He says he would love to continue playing football, but is ready to tackle life without football if he doesn’t get drafted. “Just get yourself to prioritize what’s more important. Prioritize school and sports before partying. You can enjoy that stuff after you get a good job.”

UNDER THE BIG TOP Circus Vargas has it all— except for animals Justin Stabley » The Entertainer!
T
here’s a kind of magic that can only be found at the circus, and while there aren’t too many left today, the few that tour are a wonder to
behold. Circus Vargas, one of the world’s biggest traveling circuses still using a big top tent, is marching down to Glendale and Scottsdale throughout November to bring their dazzling show to you. This year, Circus Vargas is touring Arlequin, the story of a boy who dreams of joining the circus. When night falls, he finds colorful characters filling his sleep including the magical Arlequin, a harlequin who shows him the beauty and wonder of the big top.
The show features Upside Down acrobatics with Monica Neves, who performs over 30 feet in the air without a net! A troupe of young men will bounce, leap and twist on large trampolines. Brothers Erick and Jayson Dominguez will challenge the wheel of death, a terrifying 35-foot revolving pendulum without harnesses or safety nets! In addition to magnificent acrobatics, Alex Acero, the Ambassador of Laughter, will be clowning around and turning frowns upside down with his whimsical clown display. The young illusionist Patrick Gable will also be there to stun the audience with his extravaganza of magical proportions. There are many more performances
during the show including Flying Trapeze and the Globe of Death. No matter your circus style preference of choice, Circus Vargas has it. That is, unless you’re looking for animals. Circus Vargas has taken a cruelty-free pledge, focusing on the unique abilities of humans, not animals. Experience the old-time magic of the circus brought to life for modern times.

Pixar comes to life with the help of the Phoenix Symphony
Leah Goldberg » The Entertainer!
elieve it or not, sometimes the real reason why you tear up during a movie’s emotional scene isn’t because the toys are heading to the incinerator— it’s thanks to the moving soundtrack. For the first time ever, Pixar presents a compilation of music and imagery from its 13 feature films, performed by the full orchestra for at Phoenix Symphony at Pixar in Concert. The music is brought to life with visually stunning film clips projected on a screen behind the symphony, where scenes from the movies are replayed. The Phoenix Symphony will take you through each of Pixar’s most popular creations, from growing up with Woody and Buzz in “Toy Story” to soaring through happy memories in “Up.” The symphony will even play Pixar’s most recent score from “Monster’s University,” where the audience will see how monsters Sully and Mike met and ended up working for the largest scare
factory in the monster world. Conducted by Tito Muñoz, Pixar plans on tugging at your heartstrings with its memorable and award-winning soundtracks. After reliving the evolution of Pixar’s greatest creations, you will want to go straight home and watch the classic movies all over again. Kids young and old will relate to the films and score, and just how they touched our hearts. Join Buzz Lightyear, Wall-E, Mike Wazowski, Princess Atta and the Phoenix Symphony for a heartfelt, musical night this month.

THE FUNNEL CAKE BLOG: WHAT’S NEW IN SoCAL
SOCAL’S PARKS GET A MAKEOVER
Randy Montgomery » The Entertainer!
A
s the Southern California theme parks wind down from the crazy Halloween season and prepare for what is one of their busiest times of year, Christmas, we will pause for a moment and catch up on some news that has hit the parks in recent weeks. CASTLE PARK (RIVERSIDE) This small theme park packs a lot of fun into a 25-acre footprint. Originally built by theme park attraction pioneer Bud Hurlbut (of Knott’s Berry Farm fame), the original section of the park retains quite a bit of charm. Expect to find an antique car ride, classic carousel and a train ride featuring old cars from Disneyland. A more modern, interactive lasertag-style dark ride called “Ghost Blasters” can be found inside of the arcade and is one of the best dark rides in California. This summer, the park opened their latest attraction, SkyRider. Guests board one of eight gondolas and rise 80 feet into the air. The ride rotates at a leisurely pace, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding area.
DISNEYLAND (ANAHEIM) The biggest news of past few weeks was the announcement of the opening of Star Wars Land (Its tentative name.) at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Groundbreaking for the roughly 14-acre area will begin sometime in 2016. In Anaheim, the new land will take over the under-used Big Thunder Ranch. During construction, the Rivers of America will be drained and Pirates Lair will be closed. In addition, the Disneyland Railroad, Sailing Ship Columbia, Mark Twain River Boat and canoes will not be operating. Fantasmic! will be on hiatus.
Once complete, the Rivers of America will me made smaller and the train tracks partially relocated. Few details about attractions within Star Wars Land have been released. The land “will introduce you to a Star Wars planet you’ve never seen before—a gateway planet located on the outer rim, full of places and characters familiar and not so familiar,” says Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. This will be Disney’s largest single-themed land expansion.

hen Ozomatli was invited to perform at November’s MIMFest, guitarist/ vocalist Raul Pacheco says it sounded “intriguing.” He had heard of Musical Instrument Museum because he knew someone on the board of directors. He investigated further and found the variety of bands that is set to perform is stellar, including legendary bassist Victor Wooten. So Ozomatli decided to not only perform, but to kick it up a notch by bringing its kids show, OzoKidz, there as well. “It’s not a usual thing for us, but we like to do it,” says saxophonist Ulises Bella of the two shows. “We like to take advantage of the time when we’re at any one location. OzoKidz is really super fun for us though. Then we put on a different hat and play for the adults.” Adults and kids can enjoy MIMFest from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8, at the museum. The two-day outdoor music festival is “inspired by the MIM’s commitment to celebrating musical traditions of the world.” “The family-friendly festival will bring together more than 20 extraordinary local, national and international musical
acts and entertainers as well as 12 food trucks serving global fare,” says Lowell Pickett, artistic director of the MIM Music Theater. “It’ll be a great weekend. Everything about MIM is fun.” For the festival, MIM will transform its parking lot into an 85,000-square-feet festival grounds. “There will be pop-up performers, aerial performers,” Pickett says. “It really doesn’t look like the MIM parking lot when it’s done.” Besides Ozomatli, there’s another newcomer to the festival, Tucson Americana band Run Boy Run. The band has played the theater previously, and was so impressed that joining the festival was a no-brainer. “I think, one, playing outside in November, you can’t get much better weather than that,” says Matt Rolland, fiddler/guitarist. “The acts are very eclectic. Plus, I can’t wait to hear Victor Wooten. He’s one of my musical heroes.”

NO MORE MISTER
NICE NED
Justin Stabley » The Entertainer!
M
ost people don’t get the opportunity to experience Internet fame in their lifetime. For the few who do, it’s a surreal and usually brief experience. Recently, the heavy metal band Okilly Dokilly made it big on the World Wide Web after posting its photos and demo songs online for the first time. “We didn’t think it was going to be huge. It was just a fun side project,” says Head Ned, the lead mustachioed vocalist of the group. He asked that he, and the rest of the group, all be referred to only as their on-stage monikers. Okilly Dokilly is a Phoenix-based group that makes moshable tunes inspired by the straight-laced “The Simpsons” character, Ned Flanders. Within a few weeks, the band gained online renown for their gimmick, attracting laymen and news media alike. This popularity, however, came as a surprise for the small-time group, which made the band as a hobby. HIDEY HO, WORLD-A-RINO! Head Ned had been performing in local music groups for five years, but wanted to
move in his own direction. “I got jaded by doing that constantly,” he says. Late last year, he started thinking of fun projects to break the rut. “Me and my drummer were just joking around, trying to come up with goofy names,” says Head Ned. In that couch conversation, Okilly Dokilly was born, as well as the new genre: “Nedal.” The joke continued to snowball, and by November 2014, he and the other band members were making songs together. Okilly Dokilly came to consist of Head Ned on vocals, Bled Ned on drums, Thread Ned on bass, Stead Ned on Guitar and Red Ned on synth. For inspiration, Head Ned would scour the Internet for funny quotes from the character that “sound even slightly ominous,” and then watch the episode for further research. Take for instance the famous quote, “Feels like I’m wearing nothing at all” from season 11 of the show. “Stupid, sexy Flanders” goes skiing in skin-tight snow pants, much to the disdain of Homer Simpson. “Taken out of context and screamed, it sounds very heavy,” Head Ned explains.
Phoenix’s Okilly Dokilly turns beloved ‘Simpsons’ character hilariously hardcore
SPREADING THE GOOD WORD At first, no one understood the idea, compelling Head Ned to organize a photo shoot and release the band’s demo tape for the sake of publicity. The photos, taken by Head Ned’s girlfriend, posted to the band’s Facebook on August 10 followed by their Bandcamp page. They didn’t expect the storm of popularity that followed. “Once we put them online, the whole Internet wanted it,” he says. In just three days, their Facebook page received 16,758 likes and reached over 26,000 by the end of August. It was safe to say that the band had become viral even before their first live performance. Soon, large-scale news sites like time. com, billboard.com and playboy.com picked up the story, calling them “the metal band you never knew you needed” and a “stupid, sexy Phoenix rock band.” “The instantaneousness of it was a shock for us,” says Head Ned. “Suddenly your face is everywhere.” Their first show was at Rebel Lounge on September 25, and the place was completely filled. “It’s weird to have your first show sell out. You miss the development phase, testing what works live. In some parts we were flying blind,” Head Ned says.
‘NEDAL’ GONE GLOBAL It’s been several weeks now since they went viral and the media blitz has mostly diminished. “I think we’ve hit the peak of any popularity we may ever have,” Head Ned says. “I think that first three days was the tip of the mountain, it’s pretty much downhill from there.” Head Ned sees the decline in interest as an opportunity to refine their work and figure out a long-term plan. “It’s hard to have too much of a plan right now, we’re still testing the waters,” he says. Because of the initial success, Okilly Dokilly is now a medium-level band with upcoming performances in Flagstaff and select cities in California. With no manager, it’s still a very independent group that makes its own decisions. “I like keeping it that way, too,” says Head Ned. “I don’t like people being able to tell me what to do.” Now if only Flanders could adopt a bit of that metal attitude...

Motion City Soundtrack frontman finds personal connection with his audience

ustin Pierre, the animated and frenzied frontman of Motion City Soundtrack, hasn’t always wandered down the simplest paths. Even a casual listener will notice as themes of mental health, failed relationships, substance abuse and addiction bleed through the mix. Rather ironically, however, is the manner in which Motion City Soundtrack inadvertently became the champion of self-worth for a generation because of Pierre’s instability. “It was sort of an accidental byproduct of my feelings,” Pierre admits when asked about the connection between his fans and his music. “It is overwhelming in a good way, yet I get a little nervous about it because I never intended to help anyone with my music. I just wrote what was in my head and what was going on in my life. I know what I’ve gone through and how that feels. A lot of those things that I have, or have had, or have worked through, other people currently have, or have had, or have worked through.” Almost organically, fans of Motion WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM
City Soundtrack found themselves buried in the lines Pierre had penned to save himself. “I didn’t really even notice at first because I keep to myself at shows,” Pierre says about his connection with his fans. “I’m not trying to be anti-social, I just talk a lot when I get started. So to keep from losing my voice, I hole up in my bunk and read or watch movies. It is the only way I can be quiet. I started reading messages from people on social media as a way to interact with fans. I began to realize that people were telling what they’ve gone through. ‘I have what you have,’ they’d say to me. They’d feel personally connected to the songs.” It was that fusion of fans’ feelings and Pierre’s ability to capture them, even unintentionally, that kept people coming out to shows and buying albums as fast as Motion City Soundtrack could create them. That same loyalty found them on the road supporting Commit This To Memory, celebrating the 10th anniversary of its release. Now, a decade after the release of that iconic record, Motion City Soundtrack hopes to resonate with fans, both new and
old, in a similar fashion through its newest album, Panic Station, on Epitaph Records, which hit shelves September 18. Pierre admits that the new release takes him back to a time when music was fun and exciting: “This album that reminds me of how we used to write in the garage space in the late ‘90s. Panic Station is a return to the gut-driven writing style. That’s all we used to do when we were kids. It was exciting to find that place to write from again.” More importantly however, Pierre is living in the moment. “I feel like I was less aware of what was going on 10 years ago. The last few years, I’ve become much more excited about life and everything that I do.”

Chris Cornell looks back on the past and to the future to form present solo career

C
hris Cornell feels nostalgic. During his solo acoustic shows, Cornell enjoys singing hits and deep cuts from his bands Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog. But he wants to look forward, too. In an effort to do so, on September 6, Cornell released the album Higher Truth, which is fodder for his one-man acoustic show. “After King Animal came out from Soundgarden, the follow-up tours that were acoustic shows might have [featured] one or two songs that I wrote for that album,” Cornell says. “The shows are really a look back, mostly. I want it to feel like it’s going to be a look ahead as well. With the four years of acoustic touring and bringing my entire history of songwriting to this one show, my feet finally hit the ground as a solo artist—a solo artist with an identity.” The 51-year-old Cornell feels fortunate that he can switch gears between projects. “Whether it’s touring or a one-off show [with Soundgarden] or songwriting or recording, it’s a completely different focus in every way—the songwriting, the performing, being in a band and a collaboration versus being alone,” Cornell explains. “There’s no confusing one or the other, either. Two months on the road playing acoustic songs immediately transfers to being on stage with a really loud band,” he adds. “As soon as I’m sick of one, the other is waiting.” This would appear to be the ideal career. Cornell doesn’t necessarily disagree. “The closest thing I can see in terms of looking out across the landscape of other American songwriter performers would be like Neil Young, who seems to keep busy his whole career doing pretty much just that. “He’s figuring out new ways of exploring his songs and his songwriting and making albums and presenting
89
them in so many different ways and so many collaborations.” He cites the Young-Daniel Lanois 2010 collection, Le Noise, as an example. “It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard,” he says. “It came and went and he’s off and running doing other things. It’s pretty inspiring, but it’s good for someone like me who’s had an almost 30-year career, to look at someone whose career is over 40 and it’s still just as vital and still inspired and moving along. I’ve never seen a finish line for what I do. I’ve never viewed it as a job, so I never thought of such a thing as retirement.” So Cornell keeps working and, besides his sold-out solo acoustic tour that comes to the Orpheum in Phoenix on Wednesday, November 4, he’s in the beginning phases of a new Soundgarden album. (Tickets from the postponed September show will be honored.) “I’m working on new songs,” he says with a bit of hesitation. “There is no schedule of events. It’s definitely as fun as it’s ever been. I think it’s something that’s kind of better to always my one foot in. I think there were years when Soundgarden wasn’t together when I wasn’t really thinking about it. “I wasn’t automatically coming up with song ideas that were relatable to Soundgarden. Now that we’re together again, that happens automatically. “It feels really good. It’s a huge part of my musical identity. It’s this super close family member that I’m glad, at this point in my life, didn’t die or move to the other side of the planet where I’ll never see them. I think we’re lucky to have our band back again. I think we’re lucky to have it back on our own terms. It’s been nothing but great since it happened.”

THE NEW SXSW?
Mesa Music Festival floods streets and businesses with music this month Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!
F
ormer MTV VJ Matt Pinfield has become one of Arizona’s biggest fans. He’s rapped Joe C.’s parts during a Kid Rock show. Pinfield, an on-air personality for Sirius XM’s Lithium, has visited with Maynard James Keenan of Tool at his Jerome home. He’s emceed Q Fests back in the day. Now he’s returning to the state he loves to be the keynote speaker at the Mesa Music Festival Friday, November 13. “I love the idea of the festival,” he says of the Friday, November 13, through Sunday, November 15, event. The festival has been compared to South by Southwest, the annual festival in March in Austin, Texas, and melds original music, independent films and emerging technologies. SXSW, as it’s dubbed, is primarily geared toward industry and media. Pinfield says he and organizers are trying to pull in musicians and fans. “South by Southwest is an incredible festival, but now it’s become less about music,” he says. “Music really pays for it. There’s a fashion side of it, a film side to it. I think that’s all incredibly important. “But America needs a new festival that focuses on the music again and it’s a great thing. I’m not downing South by Southwest because I’ve had amazing experiences there. The idea of a Mesa music festival in the new area of the country is incredible. They’re bringing in new and talented bands, the people on the fringe or the local artists like Authority Zero.” In its inaugural year, the Mesa Music Festival is bringing in more than 200 artists from around the country to play in venues throughout the city, as well as along Main Street. Besides Authority Zero, some of the acts include teen singersongwriter Rinsley, the Bumpin’ Uglies, Vintage Wednesday and Eric James. “I have a lot of respect for the people organizing it,” he says. “I know it’s about the music. It’s supporting music and it’s a big deal.” Pinfield has supported music himself most of his life. He worked at local radio stations along the East Coast before DJing at the influential New Jersey club called The Melody Bar. During his time there, he befriended British alternative rock bands like Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Pop Will Eat WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM
Itself and The Wonder Stuff. In 1995, he was hired to host MTV’s alternative video show, “120 Minutes.” Four years later, he joined University Television and hosted farmclub.com, which aired in 2000 on the USA Network. He jumped from there to the much-coveted position of vice president of A&R and artist development for Columbia Records, signing Coheed and Cambria. That’s just some of Pinfield’s accomplishments. He’s definitely excited about returning to Arizona. He was slated to be an on-stage guest during Monster Mash on October 31 at Tempe Beach Park as well. A wealth of knowledge about music, Pinfield says during his keynote talk he will stress to bands to not worry when patrons say you “suck.” “Don’t be afraid to suck,” he says.
“Learn your instruments and play. ‘American Idol’—I’m not trying to trash it, but focusing on a voice instead of an instrument, I don’t understand. I understand why it was popular. “But practice; it’s all trial and error. Play as many gigs as you can play. The thing is never worry about someone telling you you’re not good enough. Maybe you’re not the most fashionable, or have the best haircut, but tomorrow everything could change. Things change so suddenly in music. You should be putting your heart and soul into everything you do.”

Steve Aoki brings his highenergy show to Livewire
t’s tough to talk about EDM without mentioning Steve Aoki. Although the American musician and record producer founded his own label, Dim Mak Records, in 1996, he actually released his debut mix album, Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles, in 2008. In just seven short years, Aoki has made a huge impact on the EDM industry. The long, dark-haired DJ was nominated in 2013 for the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronica Album and won the 2008 Billboard Award for Best Mix Album of the Year. His three studio
albums, including his 2015 release, Neon Future II, have all broken the top 10 in the Dance/Electronic Album charts in the United States. His second studio album, Neon Future I, even reached No. 1 after its release in 2014. A key aspect of Aoki’s success has been his collaborations with artists from virtually every genre including will.i.am, Afrojack, Iggy Azalea, LMFAO and Linkin Park. Additionally, Aoki has done inventive and memorable remixes of artists ranging from Drake to The Killers and from Bloc Party to Robin Thicke. Now he is coming back to Livewire, where he performed their first sold out show ever in February 2015. This show, presented by Live 101.5, will surely be as exciting as his reputation promises. Known for his high-energy show, which he almost always throws cake (Yes, sugary, frosted, delicious cake.) into the crowd, Aoki is one EDM star you definitely don’t want to miss.

Sandra Collins, Aly & Fila take over Phoenix for a special Thanksgiving celebration Dylan Arndt » The Entertainer!
T
hanksgiving is much more than spending time with family and eating a huge turkey dinner; it is also a time to outwardly express everything that you are thankful for. In our case, it is time to express how thankful we all are for dance music and the culture it has created. On Wednesday, November 25, Downtown Phoenix will be taken over by international and national dance music all-stars to groove us right into Thanksgiving. Monarch Theatre will house a euphoria-inducing set by the Egyptian trance legends, Aly & Fila, while right next door at Bar Smith Sandra Collins
will be throwing down what is sure to be an epic set in honor of Relentless Beats’ RB Deep event series. Aly & Fila burst on to the international club scene with their massive debut album Eye of Horus back in 2003. Since then, the duo have been breaking records left and right. In addition, with their radio show and way of life, Future Sound of Egypt, the duo has been largely responsible for exposing the world to some of Egypt’s greatest electronic music talents. Just recently Aly & Fila played an epic show at the Pyramids of Giza to celebrate 400 episodes of Future Sound of Egypt. L.A. rave pioneer Sandra Collins
has been around since the ‘90s. She is recognized internationally for becoming one of the first women on the coveted DJ Mag Top 100. Collins is remembered for her massive 6 hour set at Woodstock ‘99, where she played to a crowd of 80,000, and for her stellar Coachella performances both in 2002 and 2008. The intimacy of the Bar Smith rooftop will make for something special and just as memorable. Start your Thanksgiving off right by showing how grateful you are for the Arizona nightlife scene. Catch Aly & Fila at Monarch and Sandra Collins at Bar Smith for this mind-blowing night of entertainment on November 25.

ife is good for local Amber Giles. Giles, now known as DJ Mija, got her start as a local DJ in her hometown of Phoenix in 2012. The young 20-something was invited to perform on a Burning Man Kalliope car at the famous Bonnaroo Music Festival, and from there her career took off. At Bonnaroo she unexpectedly ran into well-known DJ, Skrillex, and the two played a set together. That set helped her rise to fame as one of the newest and most inventive EDM artists in the business. Soon after that she won a competition that landed her a gig at TomorrowWorld, where she was able to record a set that helped her establish her name in a music genre that generally doesn’t have many females. Today, Mija is a Downtown Los Angeles DJ and producer who is becoming more and more popular by the minute. Her newest production “Crank It,” featuring Lil’ Jon, was released through Skrillex’s label, OWSLA. A
s a bartender at Diego Pops in Old Town Scottsdale, Kimber Barton has a hard time explaining why she loves working there, but only because there are too many reasons. “It’s either because the food and drinks are just so, so good or because our team is really supportive and great to work with,” she told us when we stopped in for a cocktail. Keep reading to see her answers to some of our other favorite questions. The Entertainer!: Tell me about the oddest drink request you’ve gotten. Barton: I’ll never forget this. This guy ordered a shot and wanted vodka, black pepper, Tabasco and mayonnaise in it. I thought it was a joke and he was going to pass it on to a friend, but he actually drank it.
What is your number one pet peeve when working? Definitely unfriendly people. When I say, “Hi! How are you doing?” The answer is not, “Coors Light.” What is your go-to drink when you’re at a bar other than you own? A Moscow mule. I think it’s pretty safe wherever you go. Plus they are really refreshing, especially when you live in Phoenix, and a lot of place will have their own spin on it so it’s fun to try variations. What does ordering a whiskey sour say about a person? It kind of reminds me of movies or what the awkward coworker would order when things start getting weird at an office Christmas party. What do you like about this drink, the watermelon mint margarita? I think it’s a drink that looks nice and the mint isn’t overpowering, which I like a lot.
