THE SCALE OF

FEAR

The best of the Valley’s haunts, from family-friendly to fright-fueled Justin Stabley » The Entertainer!

It’s the time of year for fun frights and spooky delights. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer of the macabre or just looking for some light thrills, there’s a haunted house attraction just for you! Sectioned from most family friendly to most bone-chilling, these haunted houses are the best the Valley has to offer. Be warned: the amount of scares you can stand is up to you!

FAMILY FRIGHTS The House on Camino It’s creepy for a cause! This garage-based haunt has been running since 2008, and any money or toy donations go to the Child Crisis Center. This might be the only place in the Valley where you can feel good while feeling terrified! 4055 E. Camino Street, Mesa, thehouseoncamino.com, free but donations welcome

Phantom Manor Phanton Manor began as a few simple scares on the porch, but this family-run charity haunt has transformed into one of the best little haunts in the Valley. This year, they’ve partnered with Angels, Knights, and Stars to raise money for those affected by child abuse and bullying. Certain nights will be toned down for younger visitors. Just ask the hostess! 18155 N. 83rd Drive, Peoria, phantommanorhaunt.weebly.com, free but donations welcome

Chase Court Motel This house haunt has been running for 25 Halloweens and seems to get bigger every year. The show is completely handmade and computerized, but built with kids and adults in mind. Proceeds go to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. 450 N. Chase Court, Chandler, chaseyourfear.com, free but donations welcome

Golfland Fright Nights The Gauntlet is a maze of animatronics and live actors built to induce heart-pounding terror. While the haunted house itself might be too scary for more fragile attendees, the spookified mini golf course is perfectly harmless and would be a wonderful way to spend a family evening. 155 W. Hampton Avenue, Mesa, golfland.com/mesa, $15-$25

THE ENTERTAINER! MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2015

CHILLS AND THRILLS Fear Farm This is the biggest haunted house event in the state, boasting five separate haunts with their own themes along with Phoenix’s largest corn maze. 13th Floor Set inside a decrepit hotel, this haunt has taken the horror community by storm. The event features two attractions: Feral Moon, where werewolves haunt the town, and Patient Alpha, where the mutant hordes of a failed experiment take over the streets. 2814 W. Bell Road, Phoenix, 13thflooraz.com, $24

The Crypt What happens when the inhabitants of a crypt refuse to stay dead? This year the event features three attractions in the same location: The Crypt, The Asylum and Chaos. One of Arizona’s longest-running haunted houses makes its return bigger than ever! 1445 W. Southern Avenue, Mesa, hauntedaz.com, $23

Dark Scares Hotel Explore a place abandoned by time but not by those who remained. This haunt was voted Best of the Valley in 2013 by Arizona Foothills Magazine and they’re sure to deliver another year of successful terror. 1900 E. University Drive, Mesa, darkscares.com, $15 kids, $20 adults

NIGHTMARE FUEL Sanctum of Horror Enter the twisted mind of Lenore, a former asylum patient. Navigate her violent past through a graveyard of the undead, St. Charlotte’s Asylum, where the inmates have taken over, then finally encountering Lenore herself. This is an incredibly detailed and immersive experience that has scared the East Valley for seven years. 6555 E. Southern Avenue, Mesa, sanctumofhorror.com, $20

15

Jack and Jill’s Haunted Hill Traverse the depths of an abandoned mineshaft inhabited by the most messed up psychopaths in the state. What started as a small time haunt has become a contender as one of the scariest experiences of the season. 3401 W. Greenway Road, Phoenix, jackandjillshauntedhill.com, TBD

Scream Park One park, four terrifying attractions. Scream Park promises to be a bloody good time with Horror High, Zombie Infirmary, Clown Town of Terror and Gold Miner’s Revenge. Those with military IDs get a discount. 8823 E. McDowell Road, Scottsdale, azscreampark.com, $28

LET’S GETRÄNK

Tempe Oktoberfest packs an impossible amount of fun into one festive weekend Christina Caldwell » The Entertainer!

G

et ready, Tempe! The Oktoberfest to end all local Oktoberfests is back and ready for more brateating, beer-guzzling good times. Tempe Oktoberfest is a Valley mainstay, and for good reason. It’s the largest Oktoberfest celebration in the state, and this year it’s going to be even bigger, better and fitter than ever. It might not be your traditional Bavarian celebration, but Tempe Oktoberfest puts a spin on the typical fest. Kick it all off with the Das Frank Kush Foot Race on October 10 for a 10K, 5K

or 1 mile fun run around Tempe Town Lake, where you can work off any guilt you’ll take on while drinking beer over the weekend. Proceeds from the run benefit the Frank Kush Youth Foundation and Tempe Sister Cities Youth Programs. If running isn’t your thing, find your Zen at Yoga in the Park—the calm before the hops-laden storm that takes over the park by night. And oh, the beer selection is going to be out of this “welt!” Eight distinct beer gardens will make Tempe Beach Park their home the weekend of October 9 through 11, including selections from Tempe’s pride, Four Peaks Brewing Company, plus Beck’s, Windmer, Warsteiner and more.

Not a beer fan? No problem. Wine selections from Barefoot Wine & Bubbly will keep you close to the vine. There’s no need to leave the kids at home, either. Kinderfest will hold plenty of activities to keep the kiddos occupied, including arts and crafts projects and a giant carnival, which includes unlimited rides for $30—proceeds from which also benefit Tempe Sister Cities Youth Programs. Pry the kids away from Kinderfest during Wiener Mania, though. Dachshund races will bring the smiles as the ‘lil weenies race for the spot of top dog. All this, plus music from locals Whiskey’s Quicker, The Black Moods, Cold Shott & The Hurricane Horns, Darkness Dear boy and more, will get the party moving. (And don’t worry. There will be traditional polka music too, ya nerd!)

an engraved souvenir wine glass and six tasting tickets. To tie in the whole experience, there is an abundance of fine art and live musical entertainment. Festival goers can take in the sights, tastes and sounds with artwork from this year’s featured artist, Michael McKee. As part of the Thunderbird Artists, a community dedicated to giving emerging artists a platform to display and sell their art, McKee has been an accomplished artist for the past 12 years.

The Carefree streets will close during the time of this elegant event to make enough room for more than 160 artists who will have 5,000 original masterpieces of fine art. These works of art will include small to life-sized bronze sculptures, metal clay, wood, glass and stone. There will also be displays of hand crafted jewelry, photography, pottery and batiks, a technique of wax resisting dye applied to cloth originating in the different cultures of Malaysia Singapore, India and more.

All of the artwork available is diverse in their concepts whether they are traditional to contemporary, abstract, floral or wildlife centered. Each piece originates from different cultures such as Southwest, European, African and Native American art. The prices and subject matters will also vary so that everyone who attends the festival will have plenty of options to choose from. While you are at the festival, you can even visit the local galleries, boutiques and cafes in the Carefree area, too. Here you can utilize your time to take in as much fine dining and artwork as possible in the beauty of our desert. Explore your senses for taste, sight, sound and pure bliss at the 22nd Annual Carefree Fine Art and Wine Festival.

Kingman’s Pickin in the Vines festival melds bluegrass, wine for a seriously good time Justin Stabley » The Entertainer!

F

olk music is a hallowed tradition in America. A history of pioneering and exploration of the land long ago created the groundwork for music to flourish in the countryside beyond the influence of the big city. Celebrate this tradition at the Pickin’ in the Vines Bluegrass Festival in Kingman this month. And there will be plenty of wine to go around from local vino purveyor, Stetson Winery. For the second year, the festival is inviting some of the sought after bluegrass musicians around including Larry Gillis & West Coast Swampgrass, Nothin’ Fancy, Lonesome Otis, The Roustabouts and more. Alongside these top-notch musicians, folks who attend can also partake in classes and workshops to learn about music styles, harmonizing and songwriting, as well as enjoy excellent food

from multiple local vendors. There will also be arts and crafts stations, making sure that the festival is fun for the whole family. Since this is a folk music celebration, it’s right that it takes place just outside the small town of Kingman a few minutes away from historic Route 66.

Kingman is fully equipped with great restaurants, full service RV parks and many sightseeing opportunities, including a short trip to the Grand Canyon. So come over to get your country on while the weather is still good! Early camping and jamming is encouraged, ya’ll!

JOSEPH’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH

“Everest”

“Everest” effectively transports moviegoers to the magnificent mountain for which it is titled, enveloping viewers in spectacular sights and sounds that will make the experience genuinely nerve-racking. You climb with the characters, feeling their physical exhaustion before eventually being browbeaten by the severe snowstorm that devastates their expedition. The results are sincerely spellbinding. Seeing this on the biggest screen possible is the next best thing to summiting.

RANDY’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH

“Goodnight Mommy” Truly chilling horror films are hard to find. Along comes “Goodnight Mommy,” an Austrian thriller that quietly snuck into theaters with a rather unique premise; twin boys doubt the presence of their mother when she comes home after having plastic surgery. Is she really their mother? Is there a sinister plan afoot? What unfolds sends chills up your spine. While there is a bit of gore, the suspense is built from expert directing and perfect editing. M.V.’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH

“Black Mass”

Johnny Depp plays James “Whitey” Bulger, a notoriously brutal South Boston gang boss of the ‘70s and ‘80s, in Scott Cooper’s violent true-crime drama “Black Mass.” Cooper’s focus is on Bulger’s unholy alliance with the FBI, apparently the result of the boyhood hero-worship that one of the agents (Joel Edgerton) had for him. Depp is convincing and scary but repellent, and you may find yourself wondering why you should care about this charmless monster. But the cast is strong. Benedict Cumberbatch stands out as Whitey’s respectable brother, and the movie packs plenty of punch.

ALL GIGGLES

AND GUITARS Jeff Daniels and son set out on the road to play music, and have a bit of fun doing it Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

W

hether it’s with movies like “Dumb and Dumber,” at his concerts or with interviews, actormusician Jeff Daniels feels the need to make people laugh. “We’ll walk and people will say, ‘What is this?’” Daniels says with a sly laugh about his show, which comes to the Mesa Arts Center on Friday, October 30. “You don’t know what to expect: You have an actor with a guitar and that’s usually a bad thing, but it’s entertaining as hell. You’re also getting the guy who’s been on Broadway and knows how to be in front of people.” Daniels, who is accompanied by his son’s act, Ben Daniels Band, says he engages in conversation with the audience. “And with my son’s band, there’s a lot of musicianship. I feature those kids. [The audience] is laughing then we drop one on them that just makes them tear up, then we get them up dancing in a way that they never have before with a song called the ‘Big Bay Shuffle.’ “It’s a great night out. It’s the fourth tour we’ve gone out on. We keep going because it works. We have a great time

and so does the audience.” Ben Daniels, a graduate of The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe and Gilbert, agreed with his dad. “It’s very entertaining,” Ben Daniels says about the concert. “For the most part it’s all upbeat. He tells a lot of really good stories about the songs. The songs are great, too. With our band and him, everybody gets the chance to be featured. “We get to play a couple songs after one of the intermissions. We get to do a couple songs about him. He comes back and it escalates from there It’s a pretty wild time.” In between filming movies, Daniels recorded and released Times Like These, his sixth album to benefit his Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, Michigan. He says he is a very patient songwriter. “It’s an ongoing process,” he says. “It comes and goes. The thing that you wait on are the lyrics or the good idea. I’m not very good at writing three bad ones to get to a decent one. I’m a little more critical. “I edit myself now. If I use the same chord progression for two weeks and I still haven’t written anything, I keep throwing things away.”

Besides the tour, these are busy times for Jeff Daniels. He just wrapped the film “The Divergent Series: Allegiant,” which he calls the third film in what could be a four-film series. Next, he’s promoting the Steve Jobs movie “Jobs,” in which he plays John Sculley, the former CEO of Apple, and the sci-fi drama “The Martian,” with Matt Damon. “Martian” and “Jobs” have serious tones to them, but Daniels knows when to draw the line with comedy. “I learned that it’s OK not to be funny,” Daniels says. “We really focus on just throwing good songwriting onto it. It’s not that I don’t think the set is going to be funny. It will be. The people who are there, they don’t want to hear me doing an hour and a half of navel gazing.”

DUELING DINERS:

OREGANO’S

En garde! Our Dueling Diners love each other when they’re not reviewing restaurants, but when the meal comes, their flaws are fair game Christina Caldwell and Andrew Axelrod » The Entertainer!

CHRISTINA’S ACCOUNT: When we pulled up to Tempe’s Oregano’s location, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Here it was, 7:30 p.m. on a Wednesday and there was a wait. That pretty much doesn’t occur at any restaurant around town. Wednesday nights are the very definition of the middle of the week, when people are at their most exhausted from the work and just decide eat something simple at home. Wednesday nights are the reason “industry nights” exist in the culinary world. Wednesday nights are the worst, right next to Monday mornings. Along the lines of similar Garfieldesque thoughts, I was craving some Italian food. So we took on the 15 minute wait (which felt more like 5 in Oregano’s cute parking lot/courtyard hybrid) so I could get my fill. “I don’t ever think I’ve been here without a wait,” Andrew said. Soon enough we were seated in a mini blast from the past. Oregano’s trademark style is one part Italy, one part New York and one part “I Love Lucy.” (Is that too many parts?) Its diner-inspired interior surprisingly works, and it’s part of the charm. There’s a reason Oregano’s has been able to expand so rapidly in its 1993 inception, and I have to think part of it is due to its kitschy vibe, cheeky menu and its ability to make guests escape from the reality of what’s happening outside. ...Which, of course, I was excited to do. I got things off to a very escapist start by ordering the genius D’Liscious Root Beer Float, a combination of Captain Morgan, root beer and “other special ingredients” that blended together in creamy, rooty goodness in a welcome bastardization of my childhood treat. I sucked it down pretty quickly as we WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM

ordered some wings and Andrew stuck balls of crumpled up straw paper in my drink—an annoying childhood throwback of his own. The garlic lime parmesean wings came crunchy and dunked in a beautifully garlic-packed sauce that said “we probably won’t be touching each other tonight,” but I decided to go all-in by ordering the reason why Oregano’s is so popular— pizza! Specifically the Puerto Peñasco Carne Street Pie. Oregano’s has a unique ability to blend Italian food and a south-of-theborder sensibility. Andrew has been trying to convince me to drive with him to Rocky Point for years, but unfortunately I prize my head being attached to my body too much. I figured this was the next best thing. The combination of carne asada, cilantro, pico de gallo, poblano peppers and cojita cheese made Andrew raise an eyebrow, but I was plowing into the thin crust pizza so quick I momentarily blacked out. Cilantro and peppers are my jam. “I can see why you like this,” Andrew said. “Cilantro and peppers are your jam.” Well, he’s right. Sometime during my pizza-induced blackout I ordered one of Oregano’s trademark pizza cookies—a 6-inch bit of sugary, buttery, ice cream-topped goodness. Andrew went out to make a call and walked into my stupor. I vaguely recall the waitress listings off chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate and white chocolate macadamia nut options, and I vaguely recall slurring something at her about combining two of them. When the pizza cookie finally came my way with its hotmeets-cold deliciousness, I could really only use explicit words to describe it. Something something 6 inches...

ANDREW’S ACCOUNT: In the U.S., we love bastardizing food cultures. Christina and I wouldn’t need to drive more than five miles in any direction to find a place that does Tex-Mex, Asian Fusion or California cuisine. Oregano’s serves up a more unique blend of American, Italian and Mexican fare, one I’ve just now decide is called Mexitalamerican. You’re welcome, Oregano’s. The idea of combining American Italian flavors with south-of-the-border ingredients is one that can very easily go very wrong very quickly. Many of the ridiculous food atrocities committed by places like Pizza Hut involve topping their pizzas with dog-food quality taco meat and stuffing their crusts with nacho pump cheese, which is then served in the charred remains of Mexican and Italian flags. It’s the reason the terrorists hate us. But there is a way to do right by Mexitalamerican. Take my main dish, the Alfredo The Dark, which is a take on a pasta al burro e parmigiano, or fettucini alfredo, for the non-pretentious. The Mexican influences are deliberate. The parmesan is traded out for a southwestern cheese blend and then spiced up with poblano peppers and tomato. The spirit of the alfredo is there. It’s still creamy and comforting but with added zest and bite. While there are more traditional Italian dishes on the menu, Christina went for one of the restaurant’s most bold fusions. The Puerto Peñasco Carne Street Pie is essentially a Carne Asada Pizza. Like my pasta, Oregano’s celebrates the cultures it pulls from, rather than insult them. The usual red sauce of the pizza is traded out for pesto and pico de gallo and absolutely blasted with cilantro.

Oregano’s

I know there are people out there who would throw their heads up and scoff, laughing at the idea that this is to be called a pizza. Screw those people. The existence of a tasty and unique fusion of flavors does not somehow make a traditional pizza napoletana less enjoyable. So why limit yourself to what is “authentic?” Our menu choices were anything but traditional, with Christina ordering a grownup root beer float. I chose a drink named after my hometown with The Long Island Express, a drinking man’s drink. Even Oregano’s admits that it’s a beverage that “is your ticket to the fast lane.” I get that that could be a reference to the Long Island Expressway, but I know what you really mean Oregano’s. Wink wink. Oh, the wings! I forgot about the wings. We went HAM on those wings. I like wings. But if you’ve read Dueling Diners before, you should know this. Ten big ass garlicy bird arms are spiked with lime and served with ranch. They are delicious and should 100 percent be avoided if you are on a first date. Not only does it give you breath capable of dusting vampires from a block away, but no one looks sexy as they barbarically tear into meat and bone with their bare hands. Christina and I have been together long enough to have belching contests, so this was of no concern to us. Oregano’s is Mexitalamerican done right. Then again, I just made that term up, so there is literally no competition yet. If you’re looking for a laid back neighborhood spot to grab a pie and try some interesting flavor combos, check this place out. Grab an Expressway and a Cookie Pie and just let your pre-conceived notions go, man.

CREEK EATS!

F

all is a time for feasting, which is why one of the biggest foodie events of the year lands in the middle of October. For 24 years, The Taste of Cave Creek has gathered the attention people from all over the state that crave new and classic meals from Cave Creek’s prominent local restaurants. This year, attendance is expected to rise above 8,000, and for good reason. Some of the best food in the Valley will be featured this year! Many old favorites are returning to the event including Tonto Bar & Grill, Cartwright’s Sonoran Ranch House, Bart’s Indian Village, Z’s Asian Fusion, Cibo e Vino, Chef Sara’s Vegan Academy, It’s a Divine Bakery and many more. Some new spots showing their best include Local Jonny’s, Ridge Winery, Dirty Tequila and Hiro Sake. A craft beer and wine tasting garden, courtesy of Oak Ridge Winery and Crescent Crown Distributing, will be offering dozens of specials and mixes. In addition, there will also be tequila tasting and a margarita challenge. “We are cooler than the rest of the Valley... quite literally,” says Marshal Adam Stein, event manager. “We also are very proud that our guests can walk around and not get jostled by all the crowds. Coming to the Taste of Cave LEGENDARY ® BURGER CreekTHEyou will meet many of our restaurant owners. We offer that small town

charm just minutes from all the big cities.” The Auto Nation Ford Scottsdale-sponsored event includes musical accompaniment by Ryan Sims Band. Sims is a local, self-taught singer and songwriter who gained national attention for his original songs and revamped covers in the debut album, Can I Drive It. Later on, he found more success on “The X Factor,” paving the way for a writing position at the Song Factory in Nashville. So get a taste for local culture as autumn drifts into the Valley at Taste of Cave Creek.

The Arizona Taco Festival pits local taco purveyors against each other to see who reigns supreme

mericans have consumed over 4 billion tacos in the last year, so it’s safe to say that we’re fans of this Mexican dish—which is why the Arizona Taco Festival is looking to be one of the biggest food events in the state. This mid-October celebration of all things taco will bring in over 50 restaurants and food trucks to compete to be the best taco maker around. But tacos aren’t the only thing to enjoy at this fiesta. The Tequila Expo tent on Saturday will present over 30 brands and over 100 types of tequila to both novices and connoisseurs of the liquor. And if you’re looking for some competition, there will be a hot chili pepper challenge, a taco eating challenge, and a nacho eating challenge for the steely stomachs. Popular chefs like Justin Madsen, Joanie Simon and Johnny McLaughlin

will have cooking demonstrations to show off their skills in taco making and hot sauce design. But the festivities don’t end with food and drinks. There will be Lucha Libre Wrestling with a chance to meet the wrestlers themselves, a live music stage featuring artists like De’Anza and The Amazing Coconauts, chef hat decorating, and even a Chihuahua beauty pageant with more than 15 sassy little dogs strutting their stuff across the main stage. Experience this “taco-topia” in the middle of October. Buy the Margarita Lover’s Package to reserve a souvenir margarita cup!

GO BOLD WITH THIS IPA AND BURGER PAIRING FROM FATE BREWING COMPANY

“So this is our American Pale Ale, which if I had to pick a flagship beer, this is close to the most popular. What I find attractive about it and why I think it pairs well is that it’s a nice hop-forward beer, it’s got plenty of hop to it in the aroma, the characteristics and the flavor. But unlike a traditional American IPA it’s a little lower on alcohol. As the characteristic of a beer, it’s got all the hop but without having all the power of the alcohol. It’s something you can have a couple of and still feel pretty good about yourself. With the hoppier beers like the American Pale Ale, the hop cuts really well against something that’s a little fattier, it helps bring out the flavor. So I figured a burger would be a great place to try. Our Fate Burger is a smashed burger that we do with shaved onions, cheddar cheese, a bit of lettuce, tomato and then our Fate sauce. It’s a premium grade of beef that we actually smash and fry on a flat grill top and it creates a bit

BEERTENDERS

Bartenders who really know their beer ARON WILLIAMS, Bartender at Mellow Mushroom

W

hen bartender Aron Williams first met craft beer, it was love at first sip. His passion led him to Mellow Mushroom on Mill Avenue, where deliciously-made pizzas and craft beers reign supreme. Mellow Mushroom strives to bring the best selection of ice cold brews to the Tempe beer scene. With 48 taps on hand, it shouldn’t be too hard to find something that wets your whistle. What makes craft beer so special? I think it’s special because you can cater to everyone’s individual flavor preference. You can hone in on something that you really like down to its style and flavor profile and get something that’s really perfect for you. It also gives you the chance to try new things and new creative styles. It’s a lot more fun to drink beer when it’s not the same old thing. How did you get interested in craft beer? I got interested in craft beer by turning 21. I started working here three or four years ago and I had a couple of the craft beers and that totally changed my mind. Now I do homebrewing. I like creating my own stuff with my friends.

What is your favorite thing about the craft beer culture? In Phoenix specifically, we’re not super judgmental. Where some other cities say that their beer is the best, Phoenix is more open to everyone’s ideas as far as beer and they work together. It’s more of a community feeling rather than “us versus them.” That’s the cool part about Arizona, is that they’re willing to take beers from all over the country.

What is one of your favorite craft beers? One of my favorite beers is Smoked & Oaked from Epic Brewery. Why would craft beer lovers enjoy Mellow Mushroom? We try to rotate as many Arizona beers as possible. We always keep a few Four Peaks handles on and we rotate SanTan. The main thing we are known for is our happy hour, which is half off all alcohol and all appetizers Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

and 10 p.m. to close every night. You’re not going to find this quality of beer at the prices that we sell them for pretty much anywhere else in the Valley, and the people that know about it keep coming back.

HARVEST HOPS

A look at the Valley’s latest seasonal beers Breanne DeMore » The Entertainer!

Fall is full of a lot of wonderful things: cooler weather, Halloween, and most importantly, Oktoberfest. One of our favorite aspects of the transition from summer to fall is the seasonal beer releases by all of our favorite local craft breweries. Inspired by the season’s “it” veggie, pumpkin, and the biggest beer holiday of the year, Oktoberfest, these local brews have us ready for sweater weather and giant pretzels.

Wren House Brewing Co.

Pie Thief

This pumpkin wheatwine will be tapped this month and clocks in at 10 percent ABV. Pumped with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice, a whole bunch of pumpkin and a little ginger, this beer will be a mouth full o’ fall. Wren House is tapping half of their batch this October and aging the other half in durum wheat whiskey barrels for next year, so go ahead and get pumped for 2016, too. 2125 N. 24th Street, Phoenix, 602.244.9184, wrenhousebrewing.com

SanTan Brewing Company

Oktoberfest Lager

Coming in at 5.5 percent ABV, this German style lager is a celebration of everyone’s favorite traditional beer festival, which fits perfectly with their annual Oktoberfest celebration in Chandler. Just like that highly anticipated event, this beer is a well-loved staple around the Valley and has a strong, toasty, caramel malt profile. 8 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler, santanbrewing.com

The Perch Pub and Brewery Uncle Bear’s Brewery

Barktoberfest Lager

After you learn that they named their brewery after a beloved Labrador retriever, the name makes more sense. This fall beer comes in at 21 on the international bittering units scale and at a 5.8 percent ABV, so it has a bit more punch than some of the others on this list. It may have a bit more hops, but it still holds a smooth texture and a slight sweetness. 4921 E. Ray Road, Phoenix, 480.961. 2374, uncle-bears.com

Four Peaks Brewing Company

Pumpkin Porter

There is just no denying it. This time of year, people get pumpkin-crazy, and Four Peaks was way ahead of the crowd on this one. Now on their 18th year brewing their Pumpkin Porter, they definitely know how to hit all the right notes. This favorite brew is made with actual pumpkin puree and is the perfect combination of spicy and sweet, which makes it an ideal sipper for the 85 degree AZ fall weather. 1340 E. Eighth Street, Tempe, 480.303.9967, fourpeaks.com

Flocktoberfest

This beer may be made in a tropical bird rescue, but trust us, it’s not strictly for the birds. The Perch is Chandler’s next hot spot and this brew will ring in fall wonderfully. Ringing in at 4.9 percent ABV and only marking a 10 on the international bittering units scale, this is a nice, relaxed, malty German-style amber lager. With a toasty and bready flavor and dry finish, we can’t wait to get our hands on this one. 232 S. Wall Street, Chandler, 480.773.7688, perchpubbrewery.com

College Street Brewhouse & Pub

Oktoberfest

College Street’s fall seasonal is a straightup tribute to the classic German brewing style in honor of the annual festival. With a 5.4 percent ABV, this “bier” comes in with a little malt that meets with the perfect amount of hops for every brew lover out there. One sip of this guy and you’ll be Prost-ing all night in honor. 1940 College Drive, Lake Havasu City, 928.854.2739, collegestreetbrewhouseandpub.com

he annual Tour de Fat festival is rolling in to town to pay tribute to two of the best inventions ever created: brews and bikes. New Belgium beers will be available throughout the day for all to enjoy. More importantly, the event highlights how riding bicycles is a sustainable form of transportation. While the festival is free, any proceeds from beer sales will benefit local non-profits such as Tempe Bicycle Action Group and Bike Saviours. Last year, Tour de Fat raised more than $600,000 for non-profits. Pedal your way to Tempe Beach Park on Saturday, October 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to participate in this day-long celebration. The festivities will begin with a bike parade through the city full of costumed cyclists from every skill level. From there, guests are encouraged to take part in the many events available around the park, including a 1,000 person dance competition, comedy shows, bike contests, live music, and of course, plenty of beer! Whatever path you choose, it’s sure to be a great time!

GERMAN NATION The story of Oktoberfest and its seasonal suds Dave Clark » The Entertainer!

M

arzen is a traditional German lager that is wildly popular during the fall season. “Marzen,” (pronounced MARE’ tzen) is the German word for March, the month in which this tasty beer was traditionally brewed. In pre-refrigeration days, the German brewers did not brew in the summertime to avoid any potential negative effects of the warmer temperatures on their delicate beers. They were stored all summer long, a term also known as “lagering,” then served in the fall, typically at Oktoberfest celebrations. Marzen style beers are often referred to as “Oktoberfest” or simply

“Fest Bier.” This lager style of beer is typically composed of a combination of Munich, Pilsner and/or Vienna malts. The objective of this style of beer is to create a malt-forward, easy drinking lager that is a more substantial than the lighter drinking summer beers, but still light enough to consume in quantity. Oktoberfest beers are all about the malt. Defining characteristics of the style are flavors and aromas of toasted bread crust with mild sweetness. And hopheads, beware! These beers feature only enough hops to balance. Hop aroma and flavor is little to none. The beer starts out with

the rich “toasty” flavor, yet finishes clean and crisp and pairs wonderfully with bratwurst, pork dishes and even pizza. Historically, the first Oktoberfest celebration was a public gathering for the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. At that time, the “Oktoberfest” style of beers served were more like modern day dunkels, or “dark beers.” It wasn’t until 1871 that Josef Sedlmayr of the Franziskaner Brewery (later known as the Spaten-Franziskaner Brewery), created a new beer style based on his interpretation of the popular Vienna Lager style of beer. Vienna lagers were darker than the Pilsners of the day but drier and spicier than what would later become the Marzen. He dubbed his creation “Ur-Marzen Bier,” meaning “original March beer.” This beer was copper in color, malt-forward, with just enough

noble German hops to balance. This new style debuted at the Oktoberfest celebration that year, at a premium price, but was extremely well received. With that, a new style was born. Today’s Oktoberfest/Marzen interpretations have a wide spectrum of flavors and colors. For example, Hofbrau’s Oktoberfestbier is golden in color, and very light on the palate, drinking very closely to a traditional Helles style of lager. While Ayinger’s Oktober Fest-Marzen, Spaten’s Oktoberfest and Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest are all darker, richer with a fuller body and that signature toasty, melanoidin-rich character derived from the large use of Munich malts. If you want to experience the true essence of fall, now is the time to pick up some Oktoberfest and celebrate the season. Dave Clark lives in Phoenix and is a former pro brewer, a Certified Cicerone, and a nationally-ranked BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) Beer Judge who is passionate about all things craft beer. Dave can be reached at beerlovesbeer@gmail.com.

Gaming Tip Keep Your Feelings Hidden In a game of cards, whether its poker or blackjack, emotions are the killer. Getting emotional about your losses or your hand only provide advantages to other players and can cause you to make strategic errors. All the big gamblers know how to control their feelings and so should you. If all else fails, you can always hide your “tell” with sunglasses. WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM

FOREVER YOUNG

ABC stays relevant 30 years after major hits Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

M

artin Fry and his band, ABC, have traveled the world thanks to the ‘80s hits “Poison Arrow” and “Be Near Me.” Despite the hundreds of locales, Fry vividly remembers a 1982 gig in Phoenix. “We had a 14-piece band,” Fry says via telephone from England. “We had sparkly outfits. We were kind of ‘new romantics’ conquering America. “Then we had to open for a heavy metal band. We had a lot of success in Britain and it was our first date in the U.S. That brought us down to earth.” ABC is hoping to have better luck when it returns to the Valley to play

“Lost ‘80s Live” with other stalwarts from that decade like Wang Chung, A Flock of Seagulls, Christopher Anton of Information Society and Boys Don’t Cry. It is set for Saturday, October 10, at Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino. “I’ve played a lot of multi kind of band gigs before and it’s a lot of fun,” Fry says. “There’s a tiny little competitive edge between the acts, which means everybody’s up for it. They want to maximize the applause in a way.” Besides playing gigs like “Lost ‘80s Live,” Fry has been writing new songs for a sequel to the album Lexicon of Love, which spawned the hits “Look of Love” and “Poison Arrow.” Orchestral music will be featured on the new collection. “The album is about what it’s like to be the age I’m at now and looking at love

and all its manifestations,” he says. “I’m in my mid-50s, you have to be very inspired to make a record. I saw that New Order just put an album out. U2, too, of course. Those guys are my contemporaries. If you’re an artist in your 50s, you have to be on fire. You gotta show up with a very strong selection of songs to justify making a record because it’s a young man’s game—young women’s game—like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.”

STICKS AND

STYLE

Coyotes’ Oliver Ekman-Larsson keeps it cool on and off the ice Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

F

ashion-conscious since he was 8, Arizona Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson appreciated the clothing his grandparents bought for him as a child in Sweden. Ekman-Larsson was the talk of the town with his stylish duds. Now, nearly 18 years later, he’s balancing hockey and fashion with OEL of Sweden, a clothing line that focuses on underwear, hats and T-shirts. Founded by Ekman-Larsson and two buddies in 2013, OEL is targeting his generation. “It’s a dream come true,” EkmanLarsson says via telephone from Sweden, where he spent his offseason. “It’s fun to see your name on a hat and underwear and stuff.” He’s also proud to have it on the back of a Coyotes’ jersey, or “sweater” to diehard hockey fans. Ekman-Larsson has been with the Coyotes since he was drafted sixth overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot, 2-inch, 200-pound player ranks eighth in the NHL with seven game-winning goals, earning him the nickname “OTL” for “overtime Larsson” by his teammates. Sticking with his countrymen, he has long admired defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who played 20 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings. “My idol Nick Lidstrom played for a long time,” Ekman-Larsson says. “I would love to do the same. He’s the best D-man who ever played the game.” Ekman-Larsson has returned to Arizona to prepare for the regular season, which begins Friday, October 9, in Los Angeles against the Kings. The ‘yotes return to Gila River Arena in Glendale the following day to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins. “I think we have great fans in Glendale and Arizona,” Ekman-Larsson says. “I’m super excited to go back there and play in front of the fans.” The team has added several new—

and returning—players to the roster, namely Antoine Vermette who played for the Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks before re-signing with the ‘yotes for two years. A slew of rookies is also part of the rebuild. Ekman-Larsson is cautious when commenting on his hopes for the 2015-16 season. “It’s kind of early to say,” says the 24-year-old. “I have really seen the players we got this offseason so far. We have to get back to the style of hockey that Dave Tippett wants us to play—that’s a defending style of hockey and we have to get back to that. That’s the challenge.” When he’s not playing hockey, he can be found on the golf course, or checking out his clothes at Behind the Mask and the Ice Den. He yearns to have his clothing in stores throughout the world. He gets excited when he says, “Almost every kid in my hometown wears the hat. So it’s really cool.” “It’s not easy to get clothing into stores and stuff like that,” says EkmanLarsson, who gets pumped up listening to fellow Swedes ABBA and Avicii, naturally. He could be kidding about ABBA, as Ekman-Larsson has a dry sense of humor. In contrast to the fast-paced world of hockey, Ekman-Larsson finds running OEL of Sweden relaxing. “It’s fun to have something else besides hockey,” says Ekman-Larsson, who admires David Beckham’s penchant for fashion. “When I’m home here during Sweden in the offseason, it’s just fun to clear your mind a little bit and focus on something else. When I stop playing hockey, I will probably do something with my brand.” Like Lidstrom, he wants to play into his 40s. “Obviously, I want to do it for a couple years,” he says with a sly grin that’s evident in his voice. “No, I would love to play until I’m 40 or even longer. You can’t really say how long you’re going to play because injuries and stuff play in. I would love to play for a long time.”

SPOOKY BY DAY, SCARY BY NIGHT

Randy Montgomery » The Entertainer!

K

nott’s Berry Farm has long offered a family-friendly daytime alternative to the thrills and chills offered at night. Previously confined only to the Camp Snoopy section of the park, children had the opportunity to meet creepy crawlies, score candy and meet the Peanuts characters decked out in their Halloween best. This year, weekends in October (October 3 through 31), the park has

introduced an all-new expanded event called “Knott’s Spooky Farm.” The Halloween fun will be found throughout all areas of the park, including Ghost Town, Fiesta Village and the Boardwalk. Activities include Spooky Hollow, a maze designed for all members of the family. Trick-or-Treating throughout the streets of Ghost Town, a karaoke dance party, an interactive costume contest, shows and more! Best of all, the event is included with regular park admission.

At night, the fog rolls in and the monsters come out—a thousand of them, to be exact. Knott’s Scary Farm (select days through October 31), is a separate ticketed event and is designed for guests 13 and older. This year, those willing to brave the madness will experience eleven terrifying mazes, three sprawling scare zones, and two entertaining shows. New this year is a haunted experience aboard the classic Calico Mine Ride.

Visitors will hop aboard the train and take a journey deep inside the mountain. “My Bloody Clementine” tells the story of Clementine and her father, both were murdered centuries ago. Today, their spirits still haunt the mountain. Join a ghost hunting team in “PARANORMAL, INC.: Case #1 – The Haunting of Hayden Hill.” This maze will featuring high flying aerial stunts and scares. Explore an abandoned hospital where patients were tortured for decades. Roam the halls and encounter their spirits. Another new attraction this year is, “The Dead of Winter.” A vicious Snow Queen will wreak havoc on all who enters her icy domain. In addition, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark returns in an all-new stage show called “Elvira’s Asylum.” Guests will also have the opportunity to shoot zombies, meet the Green Witch and her Deadly Seven, ride roller coasters and roam through the fog in what is the oldest and largest theme park Halloween event!

TO THINE OWN SELF

BE TRUE

ZZ Ward stays true to herself, no matter how many times she changes Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

W

hen ZZ Ward writes music, she just wants to get something off her chest. She’s willing to put pen to paper about the beginning or end of a relationship or just something that’s bugging her. For her new EP, Love and War, things were different. “I found that I was in a new situation in my life,” Ward says via telephone from the road between Cleveland and Minneapolis. “I was in a relationship and I wasn’t in a relationship before. I realized, though, that I was still the same girl in a new situation. I still had all those feelings of insecurity, those feelings of fear, those feelings of passion and fierceness. I found it really natural writing the new EP.” The 29-year-old Ward, whose full name is Zsuzsanna Eva Ward, feels free to express herself through her blues-meetship-hop music, but there’s one caveat. “You gotta make music that you would listen to,” she stresses. “You have to love the songs first. That’s really what it’s about as an artist. That’s all you can do is make music that makes you feel an emotion, whether it’s sexy, sad, angry or makes you want to change the world. You have to feel that way about your music and then hope that

everyone else feels that way, too.” According to Ward, her fans do feel the same way, judging from the crowd reaction. She hopes to continue with her sophomore effort, This Means War, which hits stores in March. “It’s really great to go out to the world after you catch those moments in time and see that people are relating to those songs,” Ward explains. “It’s a moving experience. It’s pretty incredible to go out and have people tattooing lyrics on their body permanently.” She says it’s not scary to see fans show their devotion as such. “I’m more of a realist,” she says. “I look at it logically. These are songs that mean a lot to me. They’re songs that I write from my heart. They’re very authentic to the situations that I’ve gone through and these people connect with these lyrics. They feel connected to these lyrics so much in their own minds. I think that’s kind of what it’s about.”

ith the recent passings of BB King and Wendell Holmes, you might think the blues are dead, too. But that would mean you haven’t heard of Jonny Lang. The 34-year-old has spent his short lifetime looking up to blues legends, and being compared to them himself. At the ripe age of 13, he was compared to a “40-year-old blues veteran,” according to Total Turn Around magazine, which is pretty impressive considering he only picked up a guitar one year earlier. And since then, the blues and rock singer-songwriter has only gotten better, touring with some seriously solid talent, including The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, BB King, Aerosmith, Blues Travel-

er, Sting, Jeff Beck and more. It doesn’t hurt to have famous friends, certainly, but that doesn’t mean Lang isn’t a man of his own. His sound is characterized by his trademark 1972 Fender Thinline Telecaster, adorned with a pinup girl illustration. Catch the always rising blues star perform his best-known tracks, “Only a Man” and “Thankful” live and in the flesh this month at Livewire.

A JUGGLING ACT Insane Clown Posse brings its 35th album to The Pressroom Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

F

aygo-spraying horrorcore duo Insane Clown Posse admittedly aren’t Christian or religious. But the face-painted, joker card-dealing Detroiters are calling their latest album, The Marvelous Missing Link (Found), inspirational. “We’re not saying, ‘Here are the answers [to life],’” says member Shaggy 2 Dope via telephone from the Psychopathic Records office in Michigan. “But it is a more uplifting record. People can tell you all day what’s necessary in your life to be more righteous, to be more straight and narrow. You know in your heart of hearts what you need to do is basically what the album is saying.” Shaggy 2 Dope, who’s joined in ICP by Violent J, is quick to add that he’s not lecturing. “Who’s to say who’s right and who’s wrong?” he explains. “Everybody has a moral compass. Well, some people don’t. They’re called ‘clinically insane.’ Like, you don’t go out and beat up old ladies. “To some people, spitting on the

sidewalk is a travesty. I spit and adjust [myself ] every three seconds and that doesn’t make me a bad person. It’s up to the individual to find out who you are and what you need to do to find that missing link in your life.” Juggalos, the moniker given to ICP “family” members, are seeking the duo’s help alright. The album has seen healthy sales and now ICP is embarking on a tour that comes to The Pressroom in Phoenix on October 20. “I love Phoenix,” Shaggy 2 Dope says. “It’s nice and warm. There’s good-looking broads, super Juggalos. We’ve been, like, down with Phoenix for forever.” Juggalos can expect ICP to play tracks from The Marvelous Missing Link (Found) at the show. It’ll mark one of the first times that the hip-hop duo has performed the material live. “We haven’t really done much of it live, besides a song at ‘The Gathering,’” he says about ICP’s annual festival. “We’re looking forward to doing material off of it on this tour. It’s always

crazy doing new songs at shows because we don’t have radio hits or nothing like that. Well, we don’t have songs on the radio or nothing. You never know what songs are going to go over good with the crowd. Sometimes people are paying attention and watching. Other times they’re loud. It’s hard to pinpoint what songs to do live. We never know which ones are going to be the ones the crowd is going to move to.” Shaggy 2 Dope is surprised to hear that The Marvelous Missing Link (Found) is his and Violent J’s 35th overall release. “I lost count,” he says with a hearty laugh. “That’s a lot of records.” But it also says a lot about longevity. “Not only are we still in the game, but we’re thriving in it, you know what I’m saying?” he says. “We don’t take breaks. We don’t take time off. We’re constantly in the grind. “If we’re not actually coming out with a record, we’re still up at Psychopathic. It’s a 9 to 5 job just figuring out different [stuff ] to do and different

meetings, different marketing meetings, down to merchandising. If you go to 9 at night, you go to 9 at night. We don’t stop and we never have.” Shaggy 2 Dope equates the strong work ethic with success. “A lot of bands will take a year or two off, do side projects, or take time off and hope for the best, or pray to God their next record has a big radio hit and they can tour off of it,” Shaggy 2 Dope explains. “We don’t have to be concerned about that because we’re consistent. We’re always going to be relevant because we’ll never stop.”

WELCOME TO THE DESERT

89

I’d like to think that I’ve gotten better as a songwriter since I’ve been doing solo stuff, mostly because I’m forced to write more than I did in previous lineups. The songwriting process hasn’t changed much; I just get ideas in my head or when I’m noodling around on the guitar and then flush those ideas out and basically come up with the basis for a song. I’m still a big fan of rock ‘n’ roll riffs, and I’m always looking for new and interesting ideas.

Slash’s latest collaboration is non-stop rock Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

R

ock and Roll Hall of Famer Slash is knee deep in the production of his forthcoming record featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators. Although the former Guns N’ Roses axman is pleased with the collaborative’s 2014 album World on Fire, he’s amped about the new stuff. “It’s really great,” Slash says in an e-mail interview. “It’s obviously a hard rock album—that goes without saying— but I’m really happy with where we’ve gone with World on Fire at this point.” Slash, along with Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, is set to showcase World on Fire during a performance on Tuesday, October 20, at Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino’s Ovations Live Showroom. World on Fire takes on a serious tone with the anti-war sentiments of “Dissident” and the coming-of-age saga “Bent to Fly,” to such charged issues as elephant poaching (“Beneath the Savage Sun”), child abuse in the Catholic Church (“The Unholy”), addiction (“Wicked Stone”) and the perils faced by females of a certain age in show business (“Withered Delilah”). There’s also a song inspired by Mad Men’s Don Draper (“Shadow Life”) and a rockin’ instrumental (“Safari Inn”). But Kennedy and Slash are fanning the Guns N’ Roses flames by performing a healthy dose of GNR tracks, courtesy of Kennedy’s wide-ranging vocals. Most music listeners know Kennedy from the band Alter Bridge, which he co-founded with Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti, as well as his role in the film Rock Star with Mark Wahlberg. (He plays the fan that Wahlberg pulls out of the audience toward the end of the movie.) But he seems to have found his comfort zone with Slash.

According to a setlist from a September 24 show in Montreal, the band plays “Paradise City,” “Nightrain,” “You Could Be Mine,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Civil War,” “Rocket Queen” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” However, when asked about GNR, the questions went unanswered. Slash did respond to a slew of questions about his current project. Here is what he had to say to The Entertainer! Magazine. Do you have any fond memories of playing in Arizona? I’m sure you’ve played here several times over the years. I have many fond memories from playing in Arizona! All decadent. You’re playing a show at the intimate Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino, which is a beautiful room, by the way. It must be kind of fun to play a mixture of festivals and smaller theaters throughout the year. Yeah, it was always my intention to never play the same exact sized venue over and over again. I like to break it up as much as possible, from clubs and theaters to arenas and stadiums. Congratulations on the good reviews and the No. 10 debut of World on Fire. Do those kinds of things matter to you, or no? I can’t say that it doesn’t feel good for somebody to actually appreciate a piece of work when you put it out, although I make it a point not to read any of the reviews (good or bad). The general vibe has been very positive, but it’s not what motivates my writing or recording. World on Fire is a great album. The guitar riffs are so hook-laden. What inspires you these days to write the riffs and the songs that you do. And how has the songwriting process evolved over the years?

You recently released the Live at the Roxy DVD. When you film shows for DVDs, do you plan the shows any differently? What kind of pressure does it put on you? No, basically you just put together a set list like any other show. I mean, the Roxy show was one of four shows that we did last September, so you just put a set list together that’s not identical to the set list the night before—and then you just go for it. What can we expect from your live show? That’s always a hard question to answer, every gig is more of a spontaneous thing than anything. It’s really in the moment. How the band is, the crowd and how we interact, but I can definitely say that it’s going to be a high energy, hard rocking good time The band is really in top form right now, so I’d say just expect a good show! We’re definitely looking forward to playing in Arizona. How do you feel that World on Fire fits in with your catalog? I never really looked at it fitting in with my catalogue per se but as far as what the Conspirators have been doing, I think it definitely shows the natural progression of the band and the development in the song writing. Just establishing what we already knew with the chemistry we have and then fleshing that out. What was it about Myles Kennedy that made you say, “Hey, I have to work with him”? He’s just got such a beautiful voice. He’s got a great rock ‘n’ roll sensibility but, at the same time, a fantastic melodic approach and an amazing range, plus he’s a great lyricist. I was really blown away when I first worked with him.

Zac Brown Band is about so much more than just music

eing at home in Atlanta is a rarity these days for Zac Brown Band multiinstrumentalist Coy Bowles. The act has spent the summer gigging at football stadiums and baseball fields, including three sold-out shows at Fenway Park in Boston and the first concert at Coors Field in Denver. While these milestones are notable, Bowles is thinking out of the box during his rare alone moments. He’s been penning children’s books. “I got into the children’s book thing in the oddest way,” he says with a laugh. “I don’t have kids. Heck, I wasn’t even married then. “I taught guitar lessons for a long time. I have one of those personalities where if you’re going to hang out with somebody and spend 30 minutes a week teaching a kid to learn how to play, a huge part of it is investing time into getting to know who they are—not keeping everything business.” WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM

That’s part of Bowles’ desire to make a difference in people’s lives. So he put pen to paper and created “Amy Giggles, Laugh Out Loud,” which is available on the ZBB’s website. A portion of the proceeds of sale of the book will be donated to Camp Southern Ground Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. “You can never go wrong with going to help kids,” Bowles says. “I started writing short stories while I was bored on the road. I wanted to write to keep my creative fire going.” Bowles’ writing career didn’t stop there. He says, “There’s a bunch of cool stuff going on in that world, too.” He has another book coming out in December. He also just inked a publishing deal with Random House for another children’s book that he wrote. “I’m going to be an official published author, instead of self-published,” he says proudly. “I’m super stoked.” But Bowles doesn’t eschew his day job with ZBB, who is playing Ak-Chin Pavilion in Phoenix on Thursday, October 8. Bowles works hard at music and his writing endeavors, but he calls frontman

Brown “a beast.” ZBB rehearsed 87 songs for the tour—covers and the entire new album and previous efforts. “Zac is one of the hardest-working dudes in show business right now—if not ever,” Bowles says. “If you can keep up with him, then you’re doing pretty good. “He doesn’t enjoy wasting time. He has kids, a busy schedule and all this. He likes to bust ass and get out. We crammed essentially two weeks into four days. When all was said and done, I thought my brain was going to drip out of the side of my head. “But Zac is an animal. He really is a creative force to be reckoned with. I have a lot of admiration for his work ethic, for sure.” That work ethic as well as Brown’s vocals have equaled success for the ZBB. Its latest album, Jekyll + Hyde, was certified gold in September for selling more than 500,000 copies. ZBB is also nominated for Vocal Group of the Year at this year’s CMA Awards, set to air at 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, on ABC. “I think we’re successful because, first and foremost, people believe what Zac is saying,” Bowles says. “He has this quality to his voice. He sounds sincere. People

believe in his voice. “When you hear people sing and you don’t really believe it, there’s something saying, ‘I’m not really digging it.’ He has this voice that everybody believes, which makes for a great lead vocalist.” The gold record plaque, the nominations and the stadium shows are icing on the cake of a “job” that Bowles enjoys. “We have a lot of fun, for sure,” says Bowles, whose musical taste runs the gamut of Jason Isbell and Mastodon. “We have so many inside jokes as we sit around waiting for the bus to come or the plane to come or a gig to be over with. “There is a lot of downtime in between things. We’re professionals in making sure the downtime isn’t a bummer.”

STROKE OF LUCK OR TALENT The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. sets out on solo tour with humility

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

A

lbert Hammond Jr. is modest about his success. As one-fifth of The Strokes, Hammond saw the band skyrocket as part of the garage rock revival of the early 2000s. But he’s a little unsure about his solo material, which includes 2006’s Yours to Keep and 2008’s ¿Como Te Llama? It wasn’t until Hammond released Momentary Masters seven years later that he felt a bit more secure. “After I completed this record, I was so excited,” says Hammond, the son of Albert Hammond, who’s responsible for the song “It Never Rains in Southern California.” “I wanted to see if it could stand on its own two feet, if I could make a career out of this. Some people see touring and making records as a given, but it’s more of a gift. You have to prove to people why

you deserve to make another one.” The album, which hit stores in the summer, was the start of something new for Hammond—figuratively and literally. It marked the first time he recorded with his own band. “The biggest difference is a band had formed while touring the EP. I was really excited to see what it would sound like. I didn’t know what would happen.” Hammond has channeled that nervousness, excitement and everything in between into his live show, which comes to Valley Bar on Monday, October 12. “The setlist has been pretty rad,” says Hammond, who moonlights as a fashion designer. “It’s an entertaining rock ‘n’ roll set. I’ve got a little bit of everything. We do play a bunch of songs off the new album. I play songs off of everything.” And he’ll be spreading the word worldwide—including the Far East—for

the next year, hoping to maintain the album’s traction. “Japan, to me, is one of the harder ones,” he says. “I always feel—even in Europe—really rude not knowing someone’s language and trying to talk. “I just don’t like when you talk and there’s the assumption that everyone’s going to understand you. It’s awesome because it’s very unique. They really listen. They clap really loud and then they get really quiet to see what you’re going to do next. It’s really amazing. I love Japan.”

Since Whiskey Row’s second location, on Mill Avenue, just opened, we decided to stop by the original Old Town hotspot and ask Haber a few questions about her experiences behind the bar. The Entertainer!: Tell me about the oddest drink request you’ve gotten. Haber: The oddest drink request I’ve ever gotten was a “broken down golf cart with a salted rim.” Not only was it a shot mix I’d never heard of, but the salted rim as the antagonist to the icing on [the] cake. What is your number on pet peeve when working? [My] number one pet peeve when working is a messy well. Call it Type A personally but there is something to be said for always knowing where your bottles, rags and tins are; and not having a mess of glassware and spilled drinks for your customers to walk into. What is your go-to drink when you’re at a bar other than your own? My go-to drink has to be a well-made and crafted Old Fashioned. There is

something to be said about a cocktail with so much history behind [it], as well as the simplicity of its ingredients. It creates a beautiful medley of flavors. What does ordering a Scotch, neat say about a person? A neat Scotch drinker speaks “maturity and well-developed palate” to me. There is an understanding of flavor profiles that comes with a perfectly crafted Scotch. Allowing those complexities to speak for themselves alone does say a lot about the drinker.

FIERY BULLET

1 ½ oz. Bulleit Rye ¾ oz. fresh lemon juice ¾ oz. agave nectar Muddled jalapeño and basil Gosling’s Ginger Beer to top off

What do you like about this drink, the Fiery Bulleit? What I like about the Fiery Bulleit is the blend of earthy, sweet and a little hint of spicy. I’m not a fan of overly sweetened cocktails and I feel like this cocktail really blends all of the elements together. The basil mixed with the jalapeño and then the spiced flavors from the Bulleit Rye pair very well together. It’s a great cocktail and something a little different than the norm. It’s incredibly refreshing and has a little bit of effervescence.

THE ELECTRONIC RENAISSANCE MAN

Kayzo to demonstrate his musical variation at Foam Wonderland Dylan Arndt » The Entertainer!

H

ayden Capuozzo, known as Kayzo to the masses, is a 23-year-old DJ/producer originating from Houston, Texas, now residing in Los Angeles. What makes Kayzo special is that his powerful drive and deep passion for dance music has allowed the producer to do what many others in his position lack the courage to do: bend genres. The young producer allows his diverse musical interests and abilities to be his identifying attribute, and through his musical integrity blends genres that may not have otherwise been married. Capuozzo is known for stirring hard dance tropes into genres like trap, dubstep, electro, and more, but still takes the time to develop his own individually unique tracks that do not incorporate hard

dance. For example, last month Kayzo released his own “harder” remix of NWA’s “F.T.P.” The track is certainly “hard,” as the title of the remix suggests. However, it relies more on dirty trap beats than elements of hard style or hard dance to complement the ‘90s rap. On the other hand, the producer can certainly make a mean hardstyle track too. Having collaborated with artists like LNY TNZ and crafting some remarkably unique hardstyle remixes of Knife Party and KDrew, Kayzo’s diversity really bleeds through his library of music. And it doesn’t stop there. Kayzo has also tackled a bit of DnB with his fantastic drum and bass remix of Alesso’s worldwide success, “Heroes.” The track retains the melody of the original track, but picks up the pace a bit and is graced with that signature Kayzo flair that begs audiences to bang their heads.

Kayzo caught his big break in 2012 when he won Insomniac’s Project Discovery mixing contest. His potential was recognized so early on, in fact, that by winning the contest, Kayzo was able to say that his first-ever live DJ show was at Insomniac’s Escape from Wonderland. His first show! He has played many since then, and you will have the opportunity to catch this electronic renaissance man spin another when he opens for Bingo Players and UZ at Foam Wonderland later this month.

urtis Alan Jones was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1967. Now known as Green Velvet, this American techno DJ made a life-long career out of his passion for music. Jones left his master’s degree studies in chemical engineering at UC Berkeley to pursue his hobby of creating music. As a child he loved science fiction and video games, and those iconic sounds influenced his music later in life. His father was also a part-time DJ in Chicago. Green Velvet’s sound (and hair) has evolved over the years. He’s experimented with genres all over the music spectrum but has always made sure to stick to his Chicago roots.

He was widely popular in Europe, performing his sets at numerous music festivals, clubs and other gigs. His third album, Walk In Love, was a mixture of classic house beats, pop and punk tracks released in 2005. It included songs like “Pin-Up Girl” and “Come Back.” Relentless Beats now presents DJ Green Velvet at the Monarch Theatre. Join him as he drops some sick beats on Saturday, October 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets for the show are $15 and can be purchased online or at participating Zia’s Records.

ODDLY ACCURATE ASTROLOGY What does October hold for your social life? Weiss Kelly » The Entertainer!

LIBRA »

September 23 – October 22 This month, it’s all about you, Libra. Make yourself your priority and don’t feel guilty about it. Last month may have brought about an ending or a turn in the right direction. This month will bring your fair share of invitations, because when the Sun enters your sign, others will notice you more.

SCORPIO »

October 23 – November 21 Take some time this month to take stock and focus on your social life—no need to push yourself but try to get out there. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet new people, even potential romances. In other words, throw away the key to the past and go in a bright new direction!

SAGITTARIUS »

November 22 – December 21 Expect to get a bit more serious about your commitments but be prepared for last minute adjustments. This will help your relationship with your colleagues and boss.

ARIES »

March 21 – April 21 This month is all about your social life, but unfortunately, it won’t all be great. It’s going to be more about how you reach out to others rather than if you reach out. That’s right, this time, the emphasis will be on them and not you, but if you keep that in mind, you’ll avoid misunderstandings.

TAURUS »

April 22 – May 20 This month is all about money and romance! A new exciting prelude to romance will be found around town. Check out all of the fun events happening and if you show up, they’ll show up. Just remember to be patient with matters that may seem to be on hold.

GEMINI »

May 21 – June 21 You’ll be working hard and playing hard this month. The first two weeks will have a lot of indecisions and your innate ability to flexible will be tested, but after October 13, you’ll start a new project, meet someone new or something else will be altered in a more positive way.

CANCER »

June 22 – July 22 Your home or work life will take up a lot of your time the first week of this month, but if you focus on them early on, you’ll be able to get them out of the way. The turn of the seasons always opens up possibilities, so keep your mind open to new romances and trying something new! There is no excuse to stay at home this month!

LEO »

July 23 – August 22 Leos will love October. It’ll be tough to determine which of the many events you have time for, especially when some friends seem a bit non-committal early on. Don’t wait for them, they’ll catch up eventually. The new moon on October 13 almost guarantees a new romance or creative agreement.

VIRGO »

August 23 – September 22 This month, leave work at work. Jupiter is in your sign, so you should be able to loosen up a bit. You’ll experience a peak in creativity and motivation this month as well as an open mind. Splurge a little on yourself this month—you’ll have plenty of options to do so.
