ew customers can’t quite put their finger on whether Florencia’s pizzas are New York, Chicago, or California style – which makes longtime regulars chuckle. It’s Flo’s style – and that’s just the way they’ve liked it since 1999. Owner Val Yemetz, who grew up making pizzas in his parents’ restaurant on Florence Avenue in Los Angeles, said it all starts with the crust. His Old World method takes great care and time to mix and proof the dough to ensure maximum flavor. Then he loads the pies with the freshest vegetables, cheeses and meats. “It’s like a canvas,” he said. Pizzas are cooked in deck ovens on thick stones. hen Frank & Lupe’s owner Teddy Bernal was looking for a new location last fall to add to his family’s popular Old Town Scottsdale eatery, Ahwatukee residents shouted a collective “Ole!” when he chose their neighborhood over Chandler and Gilbert. Ahwatukee sort of had the inside track, since a fan of the Scottsdale restaurant owned a vacant building in the strip mall that turned out to be perfect. “It’s a good location, a really nice neighborhood,” Bernal said. “People were craving something original without having to go over the bridge.” The New Mexican-style menu is identical to the one in Scottsdale, and all the recipes come from Bernal’s mother. She and his father started the business in Socorro. Try the chicken enchiladas with cream of poblano sauce. Ole!

But after a while, they also come to appreciate what the restaurant doesn’t have – hamburgers, wings, TVs. “We let the sports bars do that,” said owner Chris Hove. “You see a lot of people interacting here, focusing on conversation.” Many of the grilled cheeses and other sandwiches, plus the popular G-Ma’s Mac, are seasoned with bacon. Hungry patrons gobble up the hand-breaded boneless wings, strippers (boneless chicken tenderloins) and traditional wings with a choice of 21 sauces and dry rubs. The Ticknors got in early on the wing craze and with the franchise (called Native New Yorker then) when they opened the Ray Road store more than 20 years ago. The Chandler Boulevard restaurant has been up and running for eight years. Rod said the secret sauce behind the restaurants’ success is customer service. “Basically, you treat every customer well. The best thing we can do is take care of the guests one at a time with good food and good service.”

hris and Laura Hove sold their house and became renters in Ahwatukee in order to get Perfect Pear Bistro up and running in 2013. “That was very intimidating,” Chris said, “but failure wasn’t an option.” The Hoves had plenty of experience in restaurant management, however, opening new stores for Pei Wei around the country. Perfect Pear took off, and the couple quickly followed up with bistros in South and North Tempe. They’re eyeing a fourth location, and possibly a brand-new concept. Last year, they bought a house in Ahwatukee, too. “As owners, Laura and I have to wear all the hats,” he said. “The success we’ve had is very exciting.”

lthough Magical Journey Learning Center has doubled its enrollment over the past three years to 70 students, teachers and staff are still intently focused on teaching the whole child. Co-founder Julie Fischer said the center, which serves kids age 3 to second grade, also continues to boast a low teacher-to-student ratio. Enrichment activities such as art, gardening and music are integrated into the academic programs. Fischer said the certified teachers also strive to impart a sense of service and empathy – what it means to be a good family member, a good friend and a good member of the community. “We want them to love coming to school every day,” she said.

n voting for best high school teacher, Desert Vista High’s faculty had a clean sweep, taking all three positions. For top vote-getter photography teacher Chris Klein, this year’s results also were notable: He was voted best last year as well. Klein, 47, has been at Desert Vista since 1996 – long enough to see some of his students grow up. “It’s funny. Some of them are teachers. There’s a social worker in the front office who was a student too.” Klein is a resident of Ahwatukee. He and wife Danielle, a kindergarten teacher at Summit School of Ahwatukee, have four sons. He teaches about 180 students across four beginning and one advanced photography course and over the years has seen a change in why they take his course. “Before it was ‘I want to take pictures for the yearbook’ Now, it’s ‘I need to take pictures for my Instagram account.’”

usanne Larson liked Horizon Honors so much as a parent, she joined the faculty 15 years ago. Currently teaching third and fourth grade, Larson said the two grades are grouped together, allowing her to get to know the kids over the course of two years. Older students are encouraged to mentor the younger ones. Larson teaches reading, language, writing, science and social studies. Larson completed undergraduate and graduate work at the University of New Mexico and has been an educator in schools and in corporate training since 1982. Since students go on to Horizons Secondary, Larson also has the pleasure of watching them grow up. “It’s like a small town that way. “I think the most important thing a teacher can do is listen,” she said.

Operating in south Phoenix since 2004, family owned Triple R’s 8,300-square-foot, freestanding building includes bright and spacious infant rooms, toddler rooms and preschool rooms. lthough Phoenix Dance Cooperative encourages competition and has two impressive co-artistic directors and a lineup of amazing instructors, the studio also fosters a loving and family-oriented atmosphere. That’s because, since 2011, the nonprofit has been governed by parents. Parents also volunteer in all phases of the operation. The studio provides a solid foundation for 2-year-olds and up in ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop and lyrical dancing, and students participate in year-end recitals. Dancers can advance all the way to the Soul Shock Dance Company, the cooperative’s elite performance group. Office manager and instructor Michelle Columbia said interested new parents can sign up for a free unlimited trial week or get to know the school at its annual June summer camp.
