BEHIND THE COLUMN CURTAIN A COLUMN ABOUT VERY LITTLE
C
olumn writing is not for the timid. It requires ideas! Constant ideas! Interesting ideas! Wheelbarrows of ideas! I sit in my office chair daydreaming and staring out the window, hoping for my Crow or Raven friend, who I’ve dubbed BB, to come by. If she lands, I avoid writing some more. I admire our indestructible San Gabriel foothills garden of drought-tolerant plants, note the rainwater left from last night’s storm, and the pile of vegetation I’ve collected in the front part of the yard. To Hugel, or not to Hugel? Our yard trimmings bin has limited capacity, so we store the tree detritus on our property in hopes of putting it to use. Outside the haven that is our front yard is the almost highway-like traffic of Altadena Drive. I’ve written a column for almost 30 years. I never run out of ideas. That said, let me remind you of a T-shirt I saw years ago: “Watch what you say… I’m a writer” or Anne Lamott’s wisdom: “… if people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better.” It’s de rigueur to do a 2020 round-up at this time of the year, but I simply don’t have the strength. That in and of itself is a ringing indictment of 2020. It’s also customary to make a list of resolutions. Balderdash. My resolution at the beginning of 2020 prevents me from ever doing that again since that resolution was to never make another resolution as long as I live. Resolutions are like candles: they shine bright until the wax melts onto your favorite aunt’s antique table, wherein you curse the candle and vow to not light one again… until the next New Year, and the cycle repeats. Do not be tempted! Make promises instead of resolutions, and then manufacture some “No kidding” consequences if you don’t keep them and tell them to others who can hold you to account. As in, “I, (your name here) promise to eat well for six months, and if I break my promise, I will eat 10 spiders.” Making promises are far more powerful than namby-pamby resolutions. Resolutions are typically obliterated when said “resolver” misses one gym visit, eats one slice of pie, or picks their nose in their car. This is especially true if there are no consequences for breaking the resolution. For example, if you make a promise to another person to never pick your nose in the car, and you vow that if you break it, you have to
stand on the corner of Lake and Colorado and pick your nose every time a car goes by, then you’ve got some real “skin” in the game — or in this case, boogers in the game. I’ve intentionally built my promise-making and promise-keeping muscles over the years so that usually, promising another person I’ll do something is enough. Also giving myself a star on my graph. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I work for stars. I have enough of my Lutheran Sunday School goody-goody genetics intact to actually work for stars on a sheet of paper. Apparently, digital companies have also figured this out. For example, I have a 400-day streak going with my Duolingo Spanish course. I know this because Duolingo tells me every day. I am faithful because I do not want to break my streak, a non-Lutheran Sunday School gimmick like the string of stars. My Duolingo Norwegian streak is smaller at 63. Speaking of Duolingo Norwegian, it is teaching me some truly bizarre words and phrases that would have me committed should I use them in Oslo. I have a mental image of the Norwegian Duolingo tutors in their offices laughing their asses off at us. Let me get this straight: you are really having me learn how to say, “I do not eat spiders,” “I am a cheese,” and “The bear drinks beer”? Yet you still haven’t taught me how to say the days of the week or the months or even weather conditions? I suspect that Duolingo subscriptions have exploded during the stay-at-home orders, and they had to hire a bunch of out of work Norwegian comics to fill in. Although it’s possible that “Norwegian comic” is an oxymoron. I am skittish about wishing you a better 2021 than the previous year. During 2020, every time I said or even thought, “It can’t get any worse,” it did. Instead, I will end with a fervent prayer that the next column I write is about the fabulous win we had in the Georgia Senate runoff, and the column after that features Drumpf in shackles wearing an orange outfit that goes nicely with his face. Now there’s a bushel of ideas any columnist can run with! n Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! LESSONS FROM 2020 FOR A BRAVE NEW YEAR
“W
ith great challenges come great opportunities.” “Crisis brings out the best in people.” There have been numerous times throughout history that put the truth of these sayings to the test, and 2020 was certainly one of them. In retrospect, we can safely conclude that these maxims passed a trial by fire with flying colors and will long endure as part of our lexicon. As a lifelong participant and seasoned observer of the state and direction of community college education, I have often noted that this nimble academic paradigm mirrors the life and times of society. In assessing societal challenges and responses through the prism of higher education this past year, much has been learned. To unsuspecting students and college educators, the year started off positive. Innovation was flourishing and the possibilities seemed endless. Students pursued training for high-tech, high-paying jobs of the future. Time- and cost-saving options, such as early college, a program where our local high school students simultaneously earn both high school and college credit, were becoming widely available and receiving high marks. Higher education was delivering good student outcomes in efficient, innovative ways and students were achieving success. Then spring arrived, and with it a global pandemic. Suddenly, the conversation turned to the need for first responders, doctors and nurses, and the focus became ways to educate students in these fields as quickly and safely as possible. Local community college students were praised for their eagerness to take on the challenge and serve in a moment of
tremendous need. At the same time, colleges and universities closed their doors to “stop the spread.” Long recognized as leaders in online education, community colleges once again lead the way in developing courses and educational delivery systems that were safe and effective and would keep students on track to achieving their goals. As the summer progressed, the message from educators to students was that, even though college campuses were closed, teaching and learning was still happening. Students were encouraged to not waste a year on inaction, but to seize the moment and earn a degree or certificate while they waited for the COVID-19 storm to pass. This fall, thanks to tech-savvy students and innovative teachers, students are learning and achieving in some of the most unlikely programs using remote and hybrid instruction. These include performing arts, automotive technology, nursing and nearly all other disciplines across the curriculum. COVID-19 will no doubt continue to impact us as 2021 unfolds. Rest assured that community colleges will continue to provide safe, effective and often exciting academic offerings, as we resolutely march forward into a brave new year. n Dr. Edward C. Ortell is professor emeritus at Pasadena City College and a community college textbook author. ‘WONDERFUL AND VIBRANT’ KATIE BRANDON TAKES THE HELM AT PASADENA VILLAGE BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
C
alling Pasadena Village residents “wonderful and vibrant,” Katie Brandon said her job as its executive director is “the best job in the world.” “It’s a great community of people,” said Brandon, who started at the “intentional,” nonprofit community of those 55 and older on Dec. 21. “They really want to grow and really spread the word that this is a new approach to aging. Our members are wonderful and vibrant and excited to be who they are with each other.” Brandon replaced Peggy Buchanan, the village’s director who retired in December after leading the organization for five years. The board selected Brandon for her broad experience in fundraising and volunteer management, and for her deep connections to Pasadena. “We are sorry to lose Peggy’s strong leadership but feel very fortunate to have found Katie Brandon,” said board president Mike Babcock. “Katie’s strong background in working with volunteers and in fundraising promises continued growth and development for the Pasadena Village.” A nine-year Pasadena resident, Brandon brings nearly 15 years of nonprofit management experience, most recently as development manager at the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation. Brandon grew up in Orange County and focused on European studies and classics at Loyola Marymount to lay the groundwork for her wish to work at a museum. She was able to do that immediately, by landing a job at the Pasadena Museum of History, where she worked for nearly 11 years. The experience opened her eyes to other nonprofits in the cultural fabric of the community. “We have a rich feeling of community here,” she said. “The people, the history, the amazing treasures and stories are infused in everything in Pasadena. I think it was inevitable that I would help organizations like this grow and secure funding.” Brandon said working at the arboretum foundation was “amazing” and was “such a beautiful place to work.” “I learned so much about horticulture and development in a larger institution. When I saw the opportunity to be back in a role that combines my skills in fundraising, community and the operational side and management side of things, I thought this is an opportunity I need to pursue.” She looks forward to fostering Pasadena Village’s growth, serving its 140+ members and enhancing collaborations in the greater Pasadena community. “Pasadena Village is about, ‘What can I do to stay in my own home,’ especially with the huge population of boomers who are contributing to the community,” Brandon said. “We’re part of this larger village movement, where these older adults support each other by staying in their own homes.” Pasadena Village was founded a decade ago and was modeled after other villages, particularly Boston’s Beacon Hill Village, thanks to a group of Pasadena residents who wanted to help each other age in place successfully. The members engage in a robust calendar of discussion groups and educational programming. The village offers new friendships and meaningful experiences along with ways to support each other and contribute to the wider community. “As they’ve grown, they’ve realized the support system they can provide each other is a benefit of enjoying the village,” Brandon said. “They started forging these lovely connections with each other. “I think that’s been especially true in the last 10 months, due to the effects of COVID. I was able to see how they pivoted almost immediately. They really jumped on Zoom. We had a lot of training sessions on how seniors could use Zoom or just call in if they don’t have a computer. That’s been fantastic.” Brandon said some of the groups have grown because of the pandemic, as folks from around the world are invited to participate in the Zoom meetings. The events include men’s time, disaster preparedness, memoir group, Spanish conversation, spirit talk, “Science Monday” and “1619 Project: Racism in America.” 4 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.07.21

“With our ‘1619 Project,’ we have people joining us from Texas and New York regularly for this important conversation about racism through the years,” Brandon said. “It has spinoff conversations that have continued. “People who have been personally affected by racism or have experienced it share their stories with each other, other members of the community and people in the United States. It’s just really been amazing to see the breadth of the interest and how we can provide the structure for these lovely conversations to continue.” She’s looking forward to increasing the visibility of Pasadena Village. “Pasadena is known as such a beautiful place to live, and Pasadena Village enhances the lives of those aging in place and helps them combat isolation, which is so critical for all of us, especially older adults, as we continue to feel the widespread effects of pandemic,” she said.” n

‘OUR SHINING HOPE’
AS DEATHS NEAR 2 MILLION WORLDWIDE, HEALTH OFFICIALS SEE THE COVID-19 VACCINE AS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE THE VIRUS BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
E
very day, Dr. Ying-Ying Goh and the Pasadena Public Health Department plead with the citizens of the city to help fight COVID-19. “It’s been extremely challenging, but we’re up for that challenge,” Goh said. “It’s just really hard when we’ve used all the tools that we have for public health and yet we still see 350,000 deaths in the United States… We’ve been in emergency mode for 10 months now and it’s a lot to ask for a system that’s been chronically underresourced.” The virus has killed over 350,000 people and infected more than 20 million in the United States alone and has no signs of slowing down. It took the United States 292 days to record its first 10 million cases and only 54 days to double that figure. Los Angeles County has become the epicenter of the virus as the region passes 800,000 cases and 10,000 deaths. It’s clear that every tactic that public health officials have instituted, from social distancing and mask orders, have failed to curb the virus. However, with the vaccines now being distributed Goh and others finally see a light at the end of a tunnel. “It is our shining hope at this time,” Goh said about the vaccines. “I think you’ve seen on social media, healthcare working celebrating because they finally feel they have hope. They have something that can turn the tide… This is the only way we’re going to be able to recover from this pandemic.” The two vaccines being distributed throughout the country were developed by Pfizer/ BioNTech and Moderna. However, with the rapid development of the COVID-19 vaccines, and the vast sea of information, many, whether justified or unjustified, have concerns about the safety of the vaccines. “The people who know the most about vaccine safety are the ones who have recommended that it’s safe,” Goh said about the various state and federal panels that have approved the vaccines. “It’s not Pfizer that’s recommending it. They’re independent panels of experts and I have a lot of confidence in that.” To understand the safety and efficacy of vaccines, it helps to understand how the body fights infections. To fight infections such as COVID-19, immune systems deploy white blood cells to combat foreign viruses. The two important white blood cells are the B-lymphocytes and the T-lymphocytes. “The B-lymphocytes are the ones that make the antibodies, and the T-lymphocytes have an equally important but different job,” said Dr. Paula Cannon, a virologist at USC Keck School of Medicine. “It’s like a two-pronged attack. The B-cells make the antibodies that stick to the virus and neutralize it and the T-cells wipe up, kill and sacrifice the cells in the body that are currently infected to stop new viruses from being produced.” However, when our bodies encounter new viruses such as COVID-19, there are no “custom made antibodies” or T-lymphocytes because our immune systems have never met the novel coronavirus. “When you first meet a virus, you often get infected because although your immune system immediately goes on red alert and says, ‘This is foreign let’s start to make some antibodies’ it takes time,” said Cannon. “It’s like a race and the virus is racing ahead, replicating itself in your body and making you feel miserable.” After a few days, the body finally catches up to the infection and creates enough antibodies and T-lymphocytes to ward off the infection. Once the virus is expelled from the body, the immune system remembers how to defeat the virus in case it comes back. “Once we’ve met a new foreign virus the body then goes, ‘OK I’m not going to let this happen again, clearly, it’s bad,” said Cannon. She continued saying the body leaves “patrol cells” on standby, waiting for another bout with the virus. “They maintain a higher level of vigilance and we call it memory,” said Cannon. “That means that if you then encounter that virus a second time in your life it doesn’t win the race. The antibody-producing machinery, the B-cells and the T-cells are already at a high enough level just patrolling the body that they can easily overwhelm the virus.” Vaccines help the human body develop an immunity to viruses such as COVID-19 without getting the illness. “That’s what a vaccine is trying to create,” said Cannon. “It’s fooling the body into thinking it’s being attacked and having the body mount the typical B-cell and T-cell immune response. At the end of the vaccination, the body stands down to this heightened memory state, which means you are now protected in the future.” As the body responds to the vaccine, mounting a defense, people tend to have reactions such as slight fever, pain at the injection site and fatigue. Cannon refers to these reactions as “Tylenol side effects,” meaning that these reactions are not bad nor are they unexpected. “We get reactions to vaccines and it’s OK and often a good thing,” said Cannon. “It tells us that our immune system has noticed what has been injected in your arm and it is working really hard to fight what it perceives as an invader… All these symptoms are actually symptoms of our immune system fighting something. In this case, it’s fighting a vaccine.” There are three main types of vaccines for COVID-19—protein subunit, vector and mRNA vaccines. The first two vaccines Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna are both mRNA vaccines, which is the technology that has allowed these companies to develop the
vaccines so quickly. “The technology for these two vaccines that have been approved so far, the mRNA vaccines,” said Goh. “This technology has been around for decades [and] it’s been tested on other viruses.” While mRNA technology has been developed for decades, both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are the first to be approved. In the past many vaccines used either an inactive or weakened germ into the body to trigger an immune response. However, with mRNA vaccines no germs are injected into the body, instead, a recipe is injected. “It only contains the recipe or the blueprint for the spike protein of the [COVID-19] virus,” said Goh. The spike protein is a harmless piece found on the surface of the COVID-19 virus. Once the body has the recipe, it begins to create the spike protein and identifies it as a foreign entity, triggering an immune response. “It stimulates your immune system to know it and create memory,” said Goh. After receiving the vaccine, once the body encounters the COVID-19 virus all it has to do is identify the spike protein and it will launch an attack on the virus. “All your body needs to recognize is the spike protein,” said Goh. “It will if you’re vaccinated and then your body will attack the whole virus because it recognizes the spike protein.” The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines both require two doses spaced several weeks apart to ensure over 94% efficacy. The quick development was enabled when the genetic sequencing of the virus was discovered by Chinese scientists at the beginning of the pandemic. Other scientists across the world were able to begin the development of the vaccine once given this information. However, just like most great ventures, the researchers required funding to create the vaccine quickly. “Normally, when you’re developing a vaccine or a drug, there are two ingredients in the recipe: there’s time and money,” said Cannon. “It takes a huge amount of money to develop a drug.” In the effort to quickly create the vaccine, the U.S. government launched Operation Warp Speed— a nearly $10 billion backing of six companies developing vaccines. Companies such as Moderna accepted the money for the development, Pfizer/BioNtech did not take funds to help development but to assist in the manufacturing and distribution. Many other private companies and individuals also donated money to help the development of the vaccine. This has allowed the timeline for creating vaccines to be compressed as all of the tests happen simultaneously. Typically, vaccines take a long time because if the vaccines fail a trial it would cost millions of dollars. However, with the backing from governments and private individuals, losing money was not a worry. “Things got kind of compressed in terms of time, but shortcuts weren’t taken and the only risk of doing that is money,” said Cannon. “We’re doing things sort of simultaneously, but it doesn’t mean they’re not getting done. The only risk it introduces is the risk such that if things fail, they will fail in an expensive way rather than in a cheaper way. “The only reason we don’t normally make vaccines within 12 months is because what we’ve done with the coronavirus is hugely expensive. Drug companies would go out of business if this was how they made vaccines.” The backing allowed companies to quickly develop the vaccine and submit an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) requests to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to the FDA, a “EUA is a mechanism to facilitate the availability and use of medical countermeasures, including vaccines, during public health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, even with EUAs the FDA still conducts rigorous trials to ensure the vaccines are safe. “It does not allow them to jump or skip steps,” said Goh. “The vaccine trial did not skip any steps. It went through phases one, two and three.” According to the FDA, phase one is when “the vaccine is given to a small number of generally healthy people to assess its safety at increasing doses” and also shows how the vaccine induces an immune response in people. Phase 2 adds hundreds of more people from different demographic groups and varying health statuses to further prove the safety of the vaccine. It also provides a snapshot of the effectiveness of the vaccine. Finally phase 3, again tests the safety and efficacy of the vaccine by incorporating thousands of people from different demographics. Also, some participants will receive the vaccine, while others will receive a placebo to test the effectiveness. With all this information, Goh felt comfortable enough to receive the vaccine when Pasadena received its first doses. However, since Cannon is not a frontline healthcare worker and has no underlying health conditions, she has yet to receive the vaccine, but she still recommends everyone to take it. “I would [take] the vaccine in a heartbeat,” said Cannon. “I have absolutely no qualms. I recommend it for my family, for my elderly parents, for everybody. I suppose that should tell you what I think about it in terms of safety but also necessity.” n 01.07.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

CRIME BLOTTER
MALE ARRESTED FOR VEHICLE THEFT, STRIKING BICYCLIST BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
A
L
ike many other cities in the nation, Pasadena has seen a surge in violent crimes in 2020. “The uptick in violence somewhat (has become) as unbearable as the pandemic,” Councilman and former Public Safety Chairman John Kennedy said during a recent meeting. For three years, the city has seen a steady decline in crime numbers. In 2019, compared to the previous year, there was a 43% reduction in homicides, 23% in rapes and an overall decline of 2%. With the city amid a pandemic, the steady decline ended this year. According to Pasadena crime statistics, instances of most violent crimes have increased—homicides have increased by 25% (one more murder than last year), rape by 69%, assault with a deadly weapon by 12% and overall crime up 4% from 2019. The trend is not limited to Pasadena. According to a study examining various criminal offenses across 28 cities published by the Council on Criminal Justice, in late May and June of 2020 homicides, aggravated assaults and gun assaults all drastically rose. Compared to the summer and fall of 2019, homicide rates increased 42% and 34% in 2020. In the 21 cities that provided homicide data, the study found that there were 610 more homicides, in the same period than in 2019. Also, aggravated and gun assaults rose 15% this summer. In the fall, aggravated assaults saw a slight decrease to 13% and gun assaults slightly increased to 16%. In a preliminary report examining the first six months of 2020, the FBI reported that while rapes and robberies decreased, homicides and assaults increased about 15% and 5% compared to 2019 reaffirming the CCJ’s findings. Experts attribute the uptick in violence to a whole host of reasons. Some believe it’s caused by the protests surrounding police brutality, others credit the crumbling economy. However, while experts may disagree on the exact reason for the uptick in violence, all of them, including the Pasadena Police Department, believe it is related to the COVID-19 pandemic “We believe that it has to do with COVID and everything going on in 2020,” said Deputy Chief Cheryl Moody in the same meeting. “People are just frustrated. Why this is causing an uptick in gang violence or violent behavior we are unsure.” Pasadena Police Chief John Perez said he believed that most of the violence is gang-related, citing that most of the victims have been Latino and most of the suspects have been African American. “The uncomfortable part is the fact that we have a set of victims around Villa-Parke who 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.07.21
have been Latino and they have been non-gang members,” Perez said. “We do not have all of the suspect descriptions in all of the instances but the ones that we do are African Americans. We seem to have a gang issue.” Perez added that the likely explanation is that gang members are targeting non-gang members. Moody and Perez said they believe that some of the violence stems from the number of guns on the street. According to Moody, PPD has confiscated about 300 guns this year. Perez added later in the meeting that over 100 of those guns have either been in the waistbands of people or in their cars. “When I talked about (the guns) earlier in the year many people were not interested in that fact,” said Perez. “Now, that we have shootings and people are dying, (people) want to see more of that policing.” According to crime statistics, most of the violent crimes occurred in Kennedy’s District 3. The California Department of Justice defines violent crimes as homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Of the four categories listed by the DOJ, District 3 leads all but one category: homicides. District 3 accounts for 32% of all rape cases, 23% of robberies, and 24% of all types of assault (assault, assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence assault). “There are many in the community that have called me and just want to know what’s going on and what is the plan to ameliorate and eliminate this type of behavior that’s causing so many in the community to feel unsafe,” Kennedy said. In response to the increased violence, Perez and PPD have placed more patrol officers in the areas hoping to dissuade any crime. “We’ve got a lot to do at least arrest those responsible and we’re getting very close to that,” said Perez. “We are focused on gang incidents and everything surrounding Villa-Parke and some other areas. We do have nightly crews of officers that are well-experienced to make the stops that need to be stopped.” With the uptick in violence, City Manager Steve Mermell wanted to reassure residents that Pasadena is still a safe city. Mermell and the City Council established a reward fund for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of those responsible for violent crimes. “I wanted to assure everybody that the Pasadena Police Department is working hard to solve these crimes. Generally, they do solve them. Somebody does know who is behind these terrible acts. We’re asking people to come forward and we will try to incentivize.” n
27-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested on charges of vehicle theft, felony hit and run and driving without a license recently in Glendale. According to Glendale police, Sean Slade stole a car that had been left running at 7 a.m. in the 400 block of West Lexington Drive. While the officer was on scene with the victim, the Glendale Police Department received a report of a hit-and-run traffic collision on the 2100 block of Camino San Rafael where a bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle. As officers were responding to this collision, the Glendale Police Department received another report that a vehicle had collided into two parked vehicles in the driveway of a residence on the 2500 block of Flintridge Drive and the driver had fled the scene on foot. Upon arrival on Camino San Rafael, officers discovered a bicyclist had been rear ended by a vehicle, which threw the bicyclist onto the street and the person suffered multiple injuries. After the collision, the involved vehicle never stopped and fled the scene. The bicyclist was transported to the hospital with nonlifethreatening injuries. Upon arrival on Flintridge Drive, officers determined the vehicle that had crashed into the parked vehicles in the driveway was the vehicle that had been stolen from the West Lexington Drive location and struck the bicyclist. Slade, who matched the description of the hit-and-run driver, was found on foot nearby. n

On Dec. 31, Pasadena recorded the single worst day of the entire pandemic. The city reported 10 deaths and 225 new cases set a new record in both single-day cases and deaths. Over the weekend the positive cases reported dropped slightly with 181 over the three days. Hospitalizations continue to rise with Huntington Hospital reporting 188 COVID-19 Patients with 38 in the ICU. The hospital also reported a slightly lower seven-day average of COVID-19 admissions, 23.5, compared to 23.8 on Dec. 31. • The distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines has fallen far short of the goal set by federal officials. The federal government
hoped to give the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccines to 20 million people by the end of December. As of Sunday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that while over 13 million doses had been distributed more than 4.2 million people have been given the first dose of the vaccine. Of those 13 million doses over 2.2 million had been given to long-term care facilities with almost 283,000 residents receiving the first dose. California has received the largest share of the vaccines so far with over 1.4 million doses with about 412,000 shots given— that is about 1% of the total population of the state. • Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that a new, more contagious variant of COVID-19 has been found in Southern California. The new strain was first detected in the United Kingdom. The first reported case of the strain in California was detected in a 30-year-old man in San Diego County. Officials say that he has “no travel history.” As of last week, Los Angeles County Public Dr. Barbara Ferrer said the more contagious variant was not yet found in LA County. The first case in the United States was in Colorado. The variant is no more deadly than the original. — Information Complied by Matthew Rodriguez

A
common query to Kevin and Kari Irvin is, “Who the hell is Henry Parsons and what’s the project?” The Irvins are the couple behind an ingenious and thriving new pop-up dining concept recently hatched on South Arroyo Parkway. If you haven’t been in a touring caravan following the Athens, Georgiabased jam band Widespread Panic, you might miss the reference here to their song “Henry Parsons Died.” As Kevin explained, “It’s this really cool southern rock, Mississippi blues song.” “(The pop-up concept) is something we’ve always had in the back of our head as a kind of vanity project, when we were doing a lot of wedding catering. We were going to open Henry Parsons Global Soul Food and so it was going to be kind of soul food and the street food from various places. What are those home dishes in those countries? What does that mean to the culture and to those people?” The wedding catering has been the couple’s successful primary business for the last seven years under the banner, “Little Lily’s Kitchen.” Specializing in “bespoke” wedding menus tailored specifically to the tastes of their clients, their 2020 slate was reliably booking out when the pandemic arrived. As Kevin noted, “When COVID hit and we needed to do a pivot, we said, ‘Well, let’s just see if we can real quick throw this out there.’”
The move to their eclectic pop-up was an opportunity for them to focus on their own taste and inclinations. “We make custom menus for our couples,” Kevin said. “It’s all about them. (Henry Parsons Project) is all about us. This is our hospitality. This is our home. This is where we come from in our soul.” The recent local buzz on the place has focused mainly on the Cajun influences on the menu. The southern Louisiana bent manifests in the house scratch-made gumbo titled Yesterday’s NOLA Gumbo & Rice ($9/ $18) and the shrimp and grits ($18), however, there is evidence of much wider-ranging interests here. “So the project is really exploring a creative space,” Kevin said. “We don’t have an identity. We have no obligation to history. We could do an entire New Orleans menu one week and do regional French the next (week) and do Mexican the next. We can do whatever we want. So that’s the project. (It’s) that exploration of these dishes and the exploration of that kind of culinary creative space.” Kari added, “We get so much of our produce from the farmers market. Because of that, I think it just gives us a ton of freedom. We got them (red mustard frills) in because they looked really cool. It’s about figuring out what we can do with them. It’s all a big giant experiment.” The couple hails from Minneapolis and met at the Minnesota CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Renaissance Fair as teenagers. Married 16 years, Kari was an itinerant high school history teacher and Kevin worked selling post-production film equipment in Hollywood until the digital age arrived and he found himself out of work. “(At the time) I was a fairly high-level home cook and I said ‘I’m unemployed and I need to pay my mortgage, man,’” Kevin recalled. “So, I offered my services (as a) personal chef and started a business. The short version is that led to some street food; the street food led to some catering and that led to some weddings. And pretty soon we had this wedding catering business coming at us as fast as we could deal with it.” Little Lily’s Kitchen launched in 2013 and soon Kari retired from teaching to join Kevin in leading the burgeoning catering operation. Henry Parsons Project, the Irvins’ pandemic pivot, popped up on Nov. 6, in the languishing space previously occupied by Margarita Jones. So, what’s the plan? “The plan when we started was to be up until we can do weddings again,” he said. “We’re having so much fun doing this. I don’t know what will happen when we have to make a decision on whether we shut it down or whether we keep it open and do catering on top of it. So, we’re calling it a pop-up for now because that’s how it started, and it has a nice ring to it. I just don’t know.” Kari added, “Granted, we’re obviously a restaurant. Nobody can deny that. We just technically don’t use that term because in that world consistency is such a big part of it. You have a recipe, and the team makes the same recipe 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.07.21

every single day. There’s a little bit of variance with us just because we’re not stuck to that traditional restaurant thing and because we’re a team of three, we’re always here.” That team of three also includes Dahlia Gomez, a talented pastry chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America at Copia, in Napa. The Irvins and Gomez were kind enough to offer a sample of the menu. The depth and range of the threesome’s collective palate became quickly evident. The aforementioned gumbo is a relatively simple rendition involving andouille sausage and chicken set in a convincingly well-bodied roux. It’s made the day before serving and allowed to rest overnight for the flavors to marry. Watch out for duck and seafood variations to come. The shrimp and grits—with grits freshly milled at the local Grist & Toll— impart a texture of luxuriously creamed velvet bedding perfectly sautéed shrimp turned in creole spices. As Kevin pointed out, “I’m always the one making the grits. As I experiment and as I learn, those grits may change slightly.” The autumn forager’s salad features grilled and spiced persimmons, roasted fennel, radicchio, frisee and roasted amaranth served with a pomegranate tahini dressing ($10/ $20). It has a robust seasonal complexity that could easily serve as a satisfying meal in itself. The harissa-rubbed roast chicken thighs served on a warm farro grain salad tossed with swiss chard and sweet potatoes ($18) is an unusually sophisticated comfort dish that actually provides comfort. The street crepes—as Kevin noted “our riff on a jianbing,” or Chinese crepes— feature versions in either pork belly or king oyster mushroom ($12) and substitute shards of their homemade potato chips in place of fried wonton wrappers for the requisite added crunch. Authentically inauthentic and no less delicious, they offer a full two-fisted meal in a crepe. At the moment, Gomez’s handiwork can be witnessed in her refreshing scratch-made strawberry cheesecake ice cream with “garam” crackers ($5) though we were also treated to an off-menu banana pudding that was so light and breezy it easily sheared away our impending gumbo bloat. Stay tuned for more from Gomez. As Kevin noted, “Dahlia is really exploring regional Mexican food right now and trying to do the research and going deep on where her parents are from.” The menu here will morph but always from roots. “Again, it’s that concept of home,” Kevin said. “Widespread Panic fans have a phrase called ‘home team.’ It’s about that giving. It’s about that hospitality. It’s about inviting other people into your home. I don’t know how you market that as a brand, but so much of that experience is what we strive to put out there.” n

‘GROWN-UP CONVERSATIONS’ ‘PASSING JUDGMENT’ EXPLORES ISSUES DIRECTLY AFFECTING LISTENERS BY BLISS BOWEN
O
ne of the few points people across the political spectrum can agree on is that American life in 2020 was noisy, thanks to everyone continually talking—but not always listening—about the turmoil in which we are living. So, while querying Loyola Law School professor Jessica A. Levinson and news radio producer Joe Armstrong about the genesis of their law-and-politics podcast “Passing Judgment” (passingjudgementpod.com), the question inevitably arose: What do they hope to add to that already frenzied national conversation? For Levinson, the answer is public service, and more meaningful dialogue. “I have a segment on one of the local NPR stations weekly, and I’ve always just wanted to have longer conversations,” she explained. Rather than merely previewing a problem or talking about, say, the Electoral College only in mechanical terms of how states vote, Levinson explores causes and consequences. Recent conversations with guests such as MSNBC contributor Kimberly Atkins and Congressmen Ted Lieu and Eric Swalwell have calmly analyzed legal and political conundrums. “My mom has always told me, people are really interested if you can explain why it affects them,” she said. “Not in an abstract, ‘Let me give you a lecture’ sense, but, ‘Come have a conversation with me and this is why the Electoral College actually does change your daily life’ sense. What was it designed to do? What does it actually do? How does it change presidential elections? How is it playing out this particular time? Why did we set it up this way? Can we abolish it without changing the constitution?” “Passing Judgment” is not a legal advice show, but they do strive to deliver
clarity by zeroing in on what Armstrong calls the “overlap in the Venn Diagram” between governance and law—constitutional issues that directly affect people’s daily lives. During the past decade, he had booked Levinson on numerous radio shows when he needed an expert on law and politics, and told her to give him a shout if she ever wanted to make her own podcast. This summer she invited him to do “Passing Judgment” with her, and while developing the program they’ve heeded a consistent mantra: keep things “accessible and informative.” “Look, we live in an era when the media is not just a firehouse in your mouth, it’s Niagara Falls in your mouth,” said Armstrong, who sees himself as an advocate for the audience. “It’s 24/7, it’s coming at you from all angles, and so much of it is opinion-based I feel like we’ve lost our North Star in terms of how to get information that’s then parsed and analyzed for people.” During a recent episode with California Congresswoman Karen Bass, Levinson paraphrased thousands of dinner table debates when she asked, “Why is it important to have diversity in government?” Is it important so citizens can see themselves mirrored in elected representatives? Or to broaden the facets of experience that inform official policy? Bass’s response: “Because you want the best people.” Their session incisively demonstrated the show’s egalitarian purpose. Upcoming guests include more congressional representatives, epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding, and “An American Sickness” author and health care journalist Elizabeth Rosenthal. Post-election, Levinson said it is “freeing” to expand discussions into civics, media literacy, and governmental structure. In CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

future episodes, she wants to identify ways to “fortify and retrofit” government institutions cracked by presidential norm-busting. (“There are a lot of different laws we never really stress-tested because everybody acted in a certain way; now we have.”) According to PodcastHosting.org, as of December 2020, there are more than 1.5 million podcasts; 50% of American homes are “podcast fans,” and podcast listeners subscribe, on average, to six shows. Along with education and comedy, news is one of the most in-demand podcasting genres. Focus on nonpartisan, small-d democratic foundations and processes is not typical. “We’re counterbalancing misinformation or disinformation,” Levinson said. “I really am a no-preference party voter. When we talk about my rage with Attorney General Bill Barr, or post-election litigation, we’re never having a conversation where anything could be read as conservative or liberal. It’s ‘Do you support the world of reality?’ (We’re) trying to talk about what actually is the law, or what actually is the politics behind it. … In our current situation, from my perspective, believing in science, believing in the rule of law, has become a proxy for partisan affiliation.” Armstrong agreed. “We’re more concerned with reality itself than we are with trying to portray a specific viewpoint. … We have a participatory government, and we can play a part in it. We vote. There are people trying to ensure as many people can vote as possible, and there are people trying to curtail our rights to vote. … It’s important to be an educated consumer of news.” Since launching on June 30, they’ve recorded two to four shows a week, remotely— Armstrong from his home studio in Glendale, Levinson from her residence in West LA. Episodes stretch from 11 to 55 minutes, with various professors, authors, politicians and political strategists, reporters and media personalities dialing in. Constitutional law expert Garrett Epps impersonated Christopher Walken while dissecting judicial temperament (not for nothing is the show titled “Passing Judgment”). A lively back-and-forth with Barbara Boxer began with the retired California senator riffing on her nine rules of “The Art of Tough” (the title of her 2016 book). That interview surprised Levinson. “Sen. Boxer came to play, which was really fun,” she recalled. “She put me through my paces in a very good way. I thought we were going to talk about being in the Senate, and maybe the confirmation hearing of Justice Amy Coney Barrett, and ‘the Senate is an institution’—and it ended up being much more a conversation about gender and politics and women running for office.” In other episodes, the articulate legal eagle swaps perspectives with Armstrong, a music-making political junkie who did not originally intend to be an on-air voice. When Florida Congressman Ted Yoho verbally accosted New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez within earshot of a reporter and Ocasio-Cortez responded with a historic speech on the House floor, it was a springboard for Levinson and Armstrong to ponder gender dynamics in the workplace and the effects of unequal gender representation in politics. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death occasioned contemplation of the cultural and legal ramifications of an iconic Supreme Court Justice’s death. On the day of the Electoral College vote, Levinson and Armstrong planned a “big gold star show”—which instantly became bigger when Barr announced his resignation. Avid conversationalists, Levinson and Armstrong say they are mindful that audience members give them their most precious resource: time. “We’re into having grown-up conversations,” Armstrong said. “Ours is not just another podcast of us spending 90 minutes (talking about nothing). We’re trying to get really important information to listeners.” n
