THANKFUL FOR GLOBAL CHILD THRIVE ACT Editor: As a founding member of the San Gabriel Valley chapter of Catholic Relief Services, I want to thank Sen. Diane Feinstein and Rep. Judy Chu for cosponsoring the Global Child Thrive act that was passed at the end of 2020. This act authorizes Congress to fund early childhood development interventions as part of development and humanitarian programs serving vulnerable children and their families. While thinking of others during this time when so many of us are experiencing hardship can be difficult, this act ensures that children around the world can do more than survive; they can thrive. Clean water and healthy food are critical, but not enough. Truly caring for human life means giving children a strong foundation to build emotional and mental resilience to confront future emergencies and trauma and to reach their full potential. COVID-19 continues to devastate families and communities everywhere. More than 1 million deaths have been recorded throughout the world since February 2020 due to the novel coronavirus. While needs continue to increase in the United States, we must also be deeply concerned about the impact globally. With Sen. Feinstein’s and Rep. Chu’s support, this act will help prevent the mental and physical harm caused by a lack of adequate nutrition, stimulation, education and nurturing care, or by exposure to toxic stress through violence, conflict and other adverse experiences. Experiencing joy and playfulness builds secure attachment and trust with adults and helps children reach their developmental milestones. Thank you again, Sen. Feinstein and Rep. Chu for your support!
PW ARTS has been over 200 years since such a breach has occurred. Like yours, my feelings about Jan. 6 have been many. I watched the unexplainable delay in appropriate police presence and action at the Capitol. How could this mob not have been expected? As I asked myself that, I couldn’t help but be grieved by remembering the immediate aggression of some military and police against this summer’s demonstrations protesting racial violence. What do we make of our nation’s ready use of violence against voices for racial justice, while we slowly escort away the white supremacist insurrectionists who storm our nation’s Capitol? What defines danger? For whom? What defines the tolerable? For whom? Why? What we have experienced has been wrenching and disturbing. The desecration of the Capitol justifiably has the headlines. The still deeper sorrow for me as a Christian leader has been the accompanying desecration of Christian life and speech revealed through fundamentalist and evangelical entanglement with idolatrous nationalism and racism and their attending loyalties. I hope we will choose not to look away from this shameful violence, or its underlying lies, irrationality and hatred. If we haven’t long since done so, we must face the reality that extremisms of various sorts are not only alive and well in the United States but in our government, and in churches and hearts across the land. On Jan. 6, some extremism landed with violence at the doors and hallways of the Capitol, tragically cheered on by the president.
In extremist and mainstream forms, and for longer than many of us want to admit and confess, Christians have substantially contributed to forms of American injustice across the political landscape. Some expressions of our faith have stoked the past and present fires of resentment, presumption and selfrighteousness now so strident and so grievous to the God we worship. All of us have a stake in the Jan. 6 events. The roots of this drama are deep, tortured and unresolved. We need a peaceful transition of power on Jan. 20, especially since we are a widely varied and polarized electorate. Once we are on the other side of the inauguration, the work of truly addressing the issues and crises of our nation’s life must compel us. Lord, in this moment and season, may you rebuke us who claim to be your disciples while we primarily pursue what is best for ourselves and for others like us; may you reveal our complicity in speech and action, personally and systemically, with anything that encourages lies, distortions, prejudices and violence; may you break down our walls of hostility and fear; may you grant us the faith and will to live to pursue you and your ways. Grant us anew your epiphany of hope and justice for the common good—and the love and faith to live it. God will not be mocked. Mark Labberton Clifford L. AN EPIPHANY OF HOPE AND JUSTICE Editor: Jan. 6 may have been epiphany, but it was dominated by a violent manifestation of American brokenness. May we join in prayer and reflection about our tragic national crisis, some of it perpetrated in the name of Jesus. We need to hold in grief and sorrow another horrific gash in this nation, ripped open by events at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. It

TO MEND A BROKEN HEART DENNY DORMODY HELPS PEOPLE GRIEVE BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ

n his 20-year career, Denny Dormody has buried 3,200 people. “Sometimes we do three or four a week—I’ve done sometimes three in a day,” said Dormody a funeral director at Mountain View Mortuary. “Over the length of time that I’ve been a funeral assistant and also as a funeral director it’s well over 3,200 or so.” As a funeral director, even though he barely knows them, Dormody tries his best to help families grieve their loved ones. “We help heal broken hearts,” Dormody said solemnly. “That means we talk with the families. We arrange flowers. Sometimes we give them a hug. Sometimes we shake their hands. We have to be good listeners. It’s quite an honor to be looking after a family and someone you’ve only met.” Dormody and many other mortuaries have had their hands full with COVID-19 killing one Angeleno every 10 minutes. In about a year, nearly 2 million people had died of the novel coronavirus. The United States has been hit the hardest with 4 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.14.21

about 375,000 dead, almost 30,000 of whom were Californians. With COVID-19 plaguing the United States, especially in Los Angeles County, Dormody and his co-workers had to change their funeral processions to allow people to celebrate their loved one’s life while also stemming the spread of the deadly virus. “Instead of having 100 people at the service, there’s now maybe 20 or 15,” said Dormody. “It’s just core family.” With a limit on how many people can attend a funeral, mortuaries like Mountain View have gone virtual. “We have a guy here who’s an ex-Army medic who does our video and our streaming,” said Dormody. “If people want to watch the service again, after the service is over they can do that.” Ever since he was 6 years old, the ex-Army medic-turned-videographer, Will Kelso, has always had a passion for storytelling. “No matter what I’ve been doing, as far as a job, I’ve always been telling stories through the lens of a camera some way, somehow,” said Kelso. He likens his role to a wedding videographer; capturing the moment for years to come while also allowing many others to attend the event without being there in person. “I think, traditionally, the funeral service has been very private,” said Kelso. “This changes hundreds, if not thousands, of years of practice and it opens up the ability to attend a memorial or funeral worldwide. You’ll no longer have to be there standing physically by the casket.” Kelso’s goal is to give people the experience of being there in the room, right next to the casket. “I’m trying to create the second-best seat in the house,” he said. “If you couldn’t be there in person, at least that’s the second-best thing.” In spring of 2020, he began to film the services for the friends and families who couldn’t attend. However, as the flurry of requests began to pile higher and higher, Kelso decided to livestream the service to the guests at home through the mortuary’s YouTube channel. Once the service is over, the livestream can be rewatched whenever. “After the day is subsided and the grieving family has caught their breath, they could return (and) rewatch the ceremony,” he said. “But more so they could revisit those comments forever.” During the livestream anyone viewing the service can interact with other viewers through the chat box next to the video. In many instances it’s family and friends sharing their fond memories of the dead. Occasionally, this leads to long lost friends and estranged family members reconnecting, just like during an inperson funeral. Once the livestream ends, similar to comments on any other video on YouTube, the memories and stories shared are captured in time for anyone to see. “We’re finding that the comment section is acting as a virtual guest book,” Kelso said. “Friends and families, who are watching online are sharing fond memories and passing on their prayers and wishes for the family.” While COVID-19 has vastly changed how we mourn the loss of loved ones, the essence has stayed the same. Whether it’s virtually or in-person, the job of Dormody and Kelso have always been to help families celebrate life. “It’s the same procedure, it’s just a little bit busier,” said Dormody. n

Reported Cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of Sunday, Jan. 10
South Pasadena: 963; Alhambra: 4,924; Unincorporated - Altadena: 2,391; Arcadia: 1,921; Glendale: 13,208; Monrovia: 2,263; San Gabriel: 2,248. Total confirmed cases in Pasadena: 8,397 Total deaths in Pasadena: 175 Total confirmed cases in LA County: 920,177 Total deaths in LA County: 12,250 Los Angeles County officials are expecting a surge in COVID-19 cases from the winter holidays. Although daily hospital admissions have started to level off, patient discharges are not happening fast enough, and the number of patients in hospitals continue to rise. Pasadena reported 147 new COVID-19 cases and two additional deaths on Jan. 10. Huntington Hospital has also reported a rise in patients with 196 COVID-19 patients including 36 in the intensive care unit. Southern California continues to have no availability in ICUs. With rising COVID-19 cases and deaths in Pasadena, the city’s public health department is shifting its efforts from contact tracing to vaccine deployment. Rather than concentrating on how someone may have contracted the virus, the city is now
focusing on vaccine distribution where in addition to the 3,000 doses given to clinicians and staff members, more than 800 were distributed to pharmacies and urgent care clinics. All vaccine distributors will now report back to the state’s immunization registry to track who needs a second dose of the vaccination. Although California faced difficulty with the first round of vaccine distribution when doses were being distributed to healthcare workers before Christmas, the system is now running smoothly without complications. New guidelines have been released by state officials, in hopes of accelerating COVID-19 administration. Gov. Gavin Newsom recently revealed that out of 1.3 million vaccine doses from Pfizer and Moderna received by the state, only a third of them had been administered. Lower-priority groups are now eligible to be inoculated if demand among higher-priority groups decrease or if vaccine doses are about to expire. These revised guidelines expand distribution to all three tiers of Phase 1A allowing health care workers in clinics, pharmacies, optometry, school health centers to receive the vaccine. Public health officials are expecting distribution in the Phase 1A group to be completed by the end of the month. Distribution will then be moving on to the Phase 1B which includes workers in education, food, childcare, who are considered high risk of exposure and everyone who is aged 75 years or older. — Information compiled by Doyoon Kim 01.14.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

ROSE BOWL INSTITUTE AWARDS INAUGURAL ROSI SCHOLARSHIPS
Roaring Back to Earth ‘JURASSIC QUEST’ TAKES OVER THE ROSE BOWL
BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
T
he Rose Bowl Institute awarded four scholarships as part of its Rose Bowl Sportsmanship Initiative (ROSI) and its 2020 Women’s Empowerment Symposium, which was held virtually in September. The four ROSI scholars are Elisa Jimenez of the University of California, San Diego; Claire Killeen of La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad; Sydney Spencer of University High School in Irvine and Stephanie Tian of the University of Pennsylvania. The scholars receive a $2,500 scholarship from the Rose Bowl Institute to continue their schooling. The awards are in recognition of their essays on how an act of sportsmanship changed their lives and how a speaker at the Rose Bowl Institute’s Women’s Empowerment Symposium impacted them. Out of 1,100 registered Symposium attendees,100 entered the competition for the scholarships, from which these four ROSI Scholars were selected. “The essays displayed outstanding character and maturity from each entrant. The winners were able to relate presentations at the symposium and personal acts of sportsmanship to their lives as young sportspeople, leaders, and ultimately citizens of their communities,” said Rose Bowl Institute president Charlie Firestone. “Frankly, we were blown away by the quality of the submissions.” The contest asked each entrant which speaker at the symposium they gained the most impact from and why, and secondly, how a moment of sportsmanship changed their perspective on their responsibilities to
society. “It was very difficult to choose winners,” said Lauren Hall, the Rose Bowl Institute’s director of programs, and symposium organizer. “But what really impressed us was the commitment and ethics that these young women experienced from their sportsmanship moments.” Speakers at the event included actress and activist Sophia Bush, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, women’s soccer stars from the 1999 World Cup Champion Women’s Team Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy, and other athletes, executives and women leaders. “The Rose Bowl Stadium’s history is special not just because of our local community, but communities around the globe,” said Rose Bowl chief development officer Dedan Brozino. “With attendees to the symposium from 33 states and seven countries, we are thankful for our donors that supported these scholarship winners and those that will have an opportunity to participate in future programs.” The Rose Bowl Institute’s mission is to “champion sportsmanship and leverage the power of sports to unite people everywhere.” Its three pillars, sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship were reflected in the speakers and sessions of the Women’s Empowerment Symposium held online over three days in September. The symposium was the second in an annual series. For more information, visit rosebowlinstitute.org or email rosebowlinstitute@rosebowlstadium.com. n

anuary at the Rose Bowl in 2021 has been relatively quiet but that will change when an assortment of creatures return from prehistoric times to roam the Earth again. “Jurassic Quest” brings an adapted format where friends and family can practice COVID-19 safety in their cars and roam the wilds of Jurassic habitats and meet dinosaurs. During a Zoom interview with Los Angeles-based Dustin Baker, one of the Jurassic Quest dinosaur trainers, the adorable dinosaur Tyson, a baby tyrannosaurus rex, mugged and showed his pretty teeth and good manners. Baker has been with the company “Jurassic Quest Drive-Thru” for five years as of New Year’s Eve. brings families up close and Originally from the New Orleans area and personal with dinosaurs. graduating from the University of New Orleans with a major in photography, Baker had been involved in plays and acting. Baker was introduced to the Texas-based company through a friend who knew Baker not only enjoyed performing, but also loved dinosaurs. Growing up, Baker’s favorite dinosaur was the vicious velociraptor. “They were smart and sneaky as they were portrayed in the movies,” Baker said. Naturally that means although he loves good dinosaur documentary, his favorite film is the first “Jurassic Park.” “The real velociraptor was not that way—maybe still sneaky, but they weren’t that size. The velociraptor you see in most films are the size of a Dakotaraptor or a Utahraptor,” Baker said. “The velociraptors were about the size of a turkey. So, they were a lot smaller, maybe still something you would not want to mess around with.” Tyson already knows this, “because we’ve done so many interviews together,” Baker confided. In pre-COVID-19 times, the event was immersive and indoors. Guests walked through the Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic periods to be among 100 true to life-size animatronic dinosaurs. Guests dug up fossils, rode their favorite life-sized dinosaur and met walking dinosaurs and greeted the baby dinosaurs. In 2019, the company produced 96 multiday events in 34 states and Canada with more than 1 million tickets sold. The drive-thru version features 70 life-like dinosaurs including the T. Rex, spinosaurus and triceratops. Besides Tyson, their other baby dinosaurs include Trixie the Triceratops and Cammie the Camarasaurus. Guests will still get to meet the baby dinosaurs with their wranglers. For this version, ticketholders stay in their cars and the staff wear masks and practice social distancing according to the state and local guidelines. All attendees receive a free, safari-style family photo in their vehicles set against a dinosaur backdrop as a memento. “We’ve taken them (dinosaurs) outside where they belong,” Baker said. “The tour itself is generally the same for everyone” in all locations. “We are very flexible; we find ways to make it happen to cater to the venue we are in.” Baker said guests can prepare for the experience by making sure they are knowledgeable about how the audio works on a cellphone. He also suggested a Bluetooth speaker that can be played through a phone. Because the tour lasts from 45 minutes to an hour, Baker also said to bring snacks. “Some of the dinosaurs are already having a snack,” he said. If you’re down on your dino knowledge, don’t despair. Baker said, “There’s a dino 411 number. If you have a question about any of the dinosaurs that you see that is not covered in the audio, you can text dino411 and one of our park rangers will answer it for you.” Baker’s funniest experience during his five years wrangling is “when a parent is really in awe of these baby dinosaurs and is sort of upset that they aren’t wild and free. ‘You should let that dinosaur be free.’”

MAD AS HELL ON MILLS PLACE STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ
T
he name Edwin Mills by Equator seems to conjure the image of an imported furniture boutique rather than the smart and storied restaurant and bar tucked inside Mills Place in Old Town. That said, these days an imported furniture boutique might suggest a more viable business model. Don’t get owner Teddy Bedjakian started. “When you’re hanging by a string, you have nothing else to lose,” Bedjakian declared on Jan. 5, when Edwin Mills by Equator was resuming its takeout and delivery service, following the state-mandated ban on outdoor dining. The resumption of service also coincided with a decision by Pasadena’s health department to allow outdoor, distanced seating without table service. Since 1996, Bedjakian has been operating at this historic Old Town location. His business was originally Equator Coffeehouse. Known for its unique ambience and happy hour specials, the restaurant was not ideally suited for the initial pandemic pivots to takeout and delivery. Already known for his opinionated volubility, the latest twists of the pandemic restrictions and second lockdown induced Bedjakian to start a GoFundMe campaign online to underwrite the payrolls of his furloughed staff. “In March, the health department called us and said we had to shut down for two weeks,” Bedjakian said. “I went ahead and paid the staff for the two weeks and we waited. Because everything was unorganized and nobody knew what to do, I went ahead and told my staff, ‘Look guys I can’t afford you. I’m just here paying for everything out of my pocket.’” He applied for the PPP and SBA loans and then had to figure out delivery options. “We were never signed up with Postmates, Uber Eats, Grubhub, so at that time trying to call them to get their service, there was no leeway in negotiation. So, 30% (commission) was what it was. So, I went ahead and signed up.” By the time the first loan was granted, he was already behind. “Then finally I got the PPP loan,” Bedjakian said. “So, they came up with $31,000 and that’s supposed to last eight weeks to catch up with the rent and everything? Anyway, it didn’t get me anywhere.” The subsequent pivot to outdoor dining presented more challenges. “Finally, they gave us the OK to open up outdoors,” Bedjakian said. “I had applied for the SBA loan. Here I am owing money to the government again. You invest your money in the tents. You invest your money in outdoor chairs and tables. When the pandemic is over, what am I going to do with these things? Fine. We’re open. Now we have to invest in the heaters. Pasadena didn’t allow propane heaters. Finally, when it started to get cold and the restaurants got together, the interim fire chief approved the propane heaters. Finally, I got the propane heaters, next thing you know, another close down.” This all at an approximate additional cost of $30,000. Having rehired his core staff members for outdoor service, Bedjakian was again faced with laying them off. “When the news came before Christmas that there was going to be a shutdown again. (I said), ‘What are these kids going to do?’ Emotionally you get attached to these kids and you feel for them.” Bedjakian set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to support his laid-off staff and to underwrite his projected exposures through March. “So, I went to my 16,000 followers who I have on social media, I said, ‘Hey guys, give me $1 or $5. This is to bring the staff back.’ I just want to make sure they have money in January to start. (I wanted to) pay them up front, even if they don’t work the hours. At least I know I paid them. They deserve it.” His fundraising target is set at $80,000. “Go big or go home. Luckily, so far, we’ve raised $16,000. This is where we’re at right now,” Bedjakian said. With the money raised thus far, he’s paid his staff in advance for January. By the way, Bedjakian credits his landlord Calvin Smith, whose family has CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

owned the building since the 1940s, for being particularly tolerant and generous regarding his rent. A fellow member of the local Lions Club, Bedjakian called Smith a “wonderful man.” He also acknowledged that the Pasadena City Council and health department have been unusually accommodating in attempting to keep local restaurants open and viable. Newly elected Mayor Victor Gordo has a lot to do with it, Bedjakian said. Councilmen John Kennedy and Tyron Hampton met with restaurateurs when they asked for help. “Former Mayor [Terry] Tornek never did anything,” Bedjakian said. “We had bad blood with him. [Gordo] knows what we’re going through. His father worked for 40 years in the restaurant industry. So, he knows what we’re going through, as opposed to the typical politician who doesn’t know. It’s because of Victor Gordo, John Kennedy and Tyron Hampton that these [positive] things are happening.” Bedjakian has more to say and ask regarding the ongoing confusion of lockdown regulations and their threat to restaurant operators. “Bottom-line is, I ask the questions,” he said emphatically. “‘What right does the government have to shut down my business?’ I want to know the law. You’re telling us all these rules and yet you haven’t established the law on these rules. It hasn’t been set up as a law. Gov. Newsom calls them guidelines? That’s not the law. So, I ask these questions. No one has answered my questions.” His outraged confusion is understandable as a longtime community stakeholder. “I’ve been here since ’96. What gives you the right to shut me down like this?” he said. “It’s a political game. You guys are playing with my life. You guys are playing with my livelihood. It doesn’t make sense. You’re saying it’s not OK to come to my restaurant but you’re saying it’s OK to go to a protest? None of the guidelines are making sense to me.” In the meantime, Bedjakian and Edwin Mills by Equator are back in business for takeout and delivery. If you pick up on-site, you can still enjoy the atmosphere of Mills Place at a table outside. The eclectic New American menu, which Bedjakian devised to reflect the community’s demographics, is still available. “I have the full menu on the website available for takeout,” he said. “I have the same happy hours.” His chef for the last 14 years, Arturo Garcia still mans the stoves. Popular menu highlights include: the Edwin Burger, a cheeseburger dressed with barbecue sauce, onion rings, tomato, greens and topped with a fried egg ($15); the black and blue burger featuring a chargrilled blackened burger topped with a tangle of caramelized onions and bleu cheese ($16); Oodles of Noodles, or the California pad thai, tossed with chicken, tofu and crushed peanuts ($14); or the short rib entrée, slowly braised and served with celeriac slaw and “barlo” sauce on a bed of risotto with black truffle oil ($22). There are daily happy hour specials, notably Monday Madness when all appetizers and alcohol are half-price. For Monday’s special, Bedjakian pointed to the macaroni and cheese as a popular favorite. Tossed in broccoli and a savory blend of cheddar, asiago, gouda, jack and mozzarella cheeses, it’s a hefty bargain at $7.50 for happy hour. Finally, Bedjakian summed it up. “My secret in life is don’t be greedy. Don’t abuse and take advantage of people or the public. If my bills are being paid and my staff (is paid) and I can take some money home to my family, I’m happy. I’m content.” n 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.14.21

With the new partnership, customers throughout Southern and Central California can have their Vallarta Supermarket groceries delivered to their door via Instacart. “With ‘Vallarta Go,’ we’re making it more convenient and safe for our customers to shop at Vallarta, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Andrew Lewis, vice president of marketing, Vallarta Supermarkets. “Customers can now shop from the convenience of their home and have their groceries and fresh authentic foods Vallarta is known for delivered to their door. HEROIC CAMPAIGN ROBERT RODRIGUEZ HOPES TO INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION BY CONNOR DZIAWURA

hot topic in the movie industry in recent years has been the growing shift from traditional theatrical releases to at-home distribution via internet streaming services—especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the effect it has had on theaters. Director Robert Rodriguez, who is known in part for the “Spy Kids” series and 2005’s “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl,” is embracing that change with his new film, “We Can Be Heroes,” which premiered on Netflix on Christmas Day. “I don’t think I would’ve done a movie just for theatrical,” Rodriguez said, acknowledging that younger audiences tend to rewatch films like this. That’s a problem when it comes to theaters and kids can only see a film once—maybe a couple more times if their parents allow—before home release, he said. “But the parents know that once it comes out on video, the kids can just watch it as many times as they want … That doesn’t help us so much for the box office,” Rodriguez explained. He said “Sharkboy and Lavagirl” didn’t do well in theaters for that reason, only garnering its own “rabid fan base” later CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

on home video. “It didn’t make financial sense a lot after a while to make those, because it wasn’t able to ever tell how many kids were actually watching it and benefit from that,” he said, noting that Netflix, on the other hand, can see how many times films like this are rewatched. So, Rodriguez said he was happy when the streamer approached him to make his first film for younger audiences since 2011’s “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.” “I was just over the moon,” Rodriguez continued. He was so eager to get back into the genre that he came up with a title and story on the spot. That film is “We Can Be Heroes,” in which alien invaders kidnap Earth’s superheroes, known as the Heroics, leading their kids—who have abilities ranging from time control to elasticity—to team up to escape government protective custody and rescue their parents. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Pedro Pascal, Adriana Barraza, Boyd Holbrook, Christian Slater, Sung Kang, Hailey Reinhart, Christopher McDonald, J. Quinton Johnson, Brittany Perry-Russell, Jamie Perez and Brently Heilbron are part of the adult cast, with Taylor Dooley reprising Lavagirl and JJ Dashnaw stepping in as Sharkboy (previously played by Taylor Lautner). “I love making those movies,” continued Rodriguez, who not only directed but wrote, produced, edited and served as the cinematographer for “We Can Be Heroes.” “I love that kids can just go right to it as many times as they want; they don’t have to be driven to a theater or beg somebody to take them. They can watch it opening day, Christmas Day; everyone around the world can watch it. And I know they’re going to just eat it up because they’ll have such easy access to it. So that’s what really got me back.” Two of the younger cast members—YaYa Gosselin, 11, and Vivien Blair, 8—are 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.14.21
already rewatching it, thanks to preview access. “We filmed this like a year and a half ago, so I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long; and I just can’t wait for Christmas Day for me and my family to cuddle up and have some hot cocoa and watch ‘Heroes’—it’s literally the dream day for me,” YaYa said. In fact, her sisters love it so much that “they just want to watch it over and over and over and over again.” Vivien, who is “so excited” for its official release, estimates having already seen it four or five times by early December. In the film, she plays Guppy, the newly introduced daughter of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. While she wasn’t familiar with Rodriguez at first, she said she watched “Sharkboy and Lavagirl” the day she got the audition and “Spy Kids” the next morning—plus, her mom did “a lot” of research on the director. “It was really so amazing,” Vivien said of her character’s relation to the two heroes. “I mean, Taylor Dooley was so nice. JJ Dashnaw, who plays Sharkboy, he actually is also the stunt coordinator. … So, he’s a big part of the movie and I’m really glad to have him on our team.” YaYa, who leads the young heroes as Missy Moreno, the daughter of Pascal’s Marcus Moreno, was similarly thrilled to work with the older cast. “To have to have your dad as the Mandalorian is so cool, and I totally nerded out when I saw him. I was like, ‘Oh my God, he plays my dad,’” she said, referencing Pascal’s role in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” (Rodriguez recently directed an episode of the show, too.) She recalled three days filming with just Rodriguez and Pascal as likely being her favorites of the entire experience. She “learned so much” from Chopra Jonas (who plays Ms. Granada, the director of the Heroics) and Barraza (Missy’s grandmother) as well, adding, “And honestly, from everybody, all of the adult cast, I learned something from each of them, and I feel like that’ll stick with me my entire career.” Considering it her first “big” role, YaYa views the film as different from her work on other projects, though. “I feel like a lot of the TV shows and films that I’ve been in are very serious, most of them are rated R, and so this was a very, very, very different experience from all of those,” said YaYa, who has appeared on series such as CBS’ “FBI: Most Wanted,” Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” and USA Network’s “The Purge.” Vivien, on the other hand, may perhaps be best known by audiences for her role in the 2018 film “Bird Box.” “I’m just so happy that I have a film that I can show to my sisters and my friends and my family—a movie that’s family friendly and that the entire family can watch,” YaYa said. Though films targeted at younger audiences are hardly new for Rodriguez, he is also known for his work on the “Sin City” and “Machete” films; “Alita: Battle Angel”; “From Dusk Till Dawn”; “Desperado”; “The Faculty”; and “Planet Terror,” his installment of the “Grindhouse” double feature with Quentin Tarantino. Not only does he view films such as “We Can Be Heroes” and his other familyfriendly works as a palate cleanser, but he said “it’s also closer to my identity.” “I mean, I grew up in a family of 10. I have five kids of my own. I love those kinds of stories that the whole family could watch,” he explained, citing his parents taking them to family-friendly films as his favorite experiences growing up. Now making them, he said they “use the totality of your creativity.” “We all have a duality,” he continued. “When we go out at night with our buddies, we’re ‘Machete,’ we’re ‘Sin City,’ but during the day with our kids, we’re ‘Spy Kids,’ we’re ‘We Can Be Heroes,’ we’re in that mode. I like separating those out and getting to have a career where I can do both, because that family is such a big part of my life. And getting to do these kinds of films that really nurture kids’ imaginations and creativity and inspire them to be better people through these characters, that’s important and it’s needed and it’s necessary now, because they really are the next generation that’s going to save this world that we’ve all obviously screwed up. So, we have to empower them and validate their ideas because we need them.” While it’s too early to be certain, Rodriguez hopes to expand on the shared universe of “We Can Be Heroes” and “Sharkboy and Lavagirl.” “I came up with a bunch of ideas for future movies, but we have to see how this one does, obviously. I would love to (make more), because we’ve already got a template for more,” he said. “I think it’ll do well, but until it happens, you really can’t say, and then no one can invest money in something until they know they know it’s working. So we’ll see. Hopefully everybody sees it and we can make more. I’d love to make more. They’re so fun.” n
Double R Productions’ “We Can Be Heroes” released globally on Netflix on Dec. 25.
