hile scholars debate whether the Chinese word for “crisis” in fact translates to “danger plus opportunity” — a longstanding popular meme — most people would agree that those in crisis situations are wise to seek out any and all opportunities. Today, with the pandemic continuing, vaccines for most still out of reach, and schools and businesses closed, the prospects for those unemployed may seem grim. However, within reach are opportunities that could lead to a brighter future than ever before. In March 2020, the National Bureau of Economic Research found that more than 70 million low-wage workers had the skills to perform higher-paying jobs. At the same time, employers are beginning to identify skills that overlap for workers in other industries, such as attention to detail and good customer service. Those skills, combined with specialized career training, can make a job applicant look very appealing. Recognizing skills students already have and combining them with training to

BY DR. EDWARD C. ORTELL CITRUS COLLEGE GOVERNING BOARD MEMBER acquire good paying jobs is nothing new for California’s community colleges. What is new is that community colleges are providing strategies to specifically help students acquire career skills during COVID-19. In addition to a variety of career exploration tools and online resources, including virtual internships, community colleges are also offering certificate programs that prepare students for today’s workplace. One such program is the new certificate in administrative office occupations at Citrus College. According to the college’s website, students who receive the certificate “…are prepared for management assignments in the business office environment. This certificate is recommended for both experienced office staff as well as entry-level office workers seeking to increase their potential for promotion. The courses leading to this certificate provide training in office information systems, human relations, business communications, and business records management.”

And, the perks of virtual community college attendance are many. In addition to the low cost of community college, the ability to take courses from home and the flexibility of online instruction make virtual courses accessible. Community colleges also have rolling admissions and hybrid courses in many programs, as well as online tutoring, counseling and financial aid. A viable pathway to economic recovery for our region is the retraining of workers who will be rehired for jobs currently in demand. This will result in the reopening of businesses and services and a return to the life we hold dear. The end of this crisis is on the horizon. Now it’s time to seek out the opportunities. n Dr. Edward C. Ortell is professor emeritus at Pasadena City College and a community college textbook author. He has served as the executive director of the Pasadena Education Association and as a member of the California Community College Trustees state board of directors.

PHEW!

SO FAR, SO GOOD

I

t is a bright, sunny, calm and clear day: Jan. 20, 2021. The beauty around me reflects the end of the Drumpf horror show and the beginning of a return to sane governance. My husband and I are listening to the swearing-in of President Biden on NPR as we slowly snake our way through the Dodger Stadium parking lots to get our shots. Eager staff and volunteers, all masked, wave us forward as we, along with thousands of at-risk Angelenos, receive the first of two doses of the Moderna vaccine. This is so California — drive-thru vaccinations featuring medical personnel rather than carhops! We stick our arms out of our car windows and are inoculated against COVID-19. As we protect ourselves, we also are celebrating the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. We feel our anxiety lift, minute by minute. Four years of anxiety, nausea and sorrow… gone with the jerk of a vaccination needle! And, we were able to bid a not-so-fond “get out and stay out!” to the jerk who botched and bungled his way in and out of office, 400,000 unnecessary COVID-19 deaths later. There’s an old joke that my late father would tell. A man jumps off a skyscraper, and during his descent, someone yells from a window, “How’s it going?” The jumper yells, “So far, so good.” It was like that as we headed into Inauguration Day, waiting to see if any of the domestic terrorists would carry out their threats; if they would jump off the violence high rise to hurt others and themselves. Many of us were on tenterhooks, waiting for the inevitable splat. That, so far, hasn’t come. For that, we are beyond grateful. As a nation, I hope the Drumpf era has caused the complacent among us to wake up. We are not as “great” as we think we are. If I had a magic wand, I’d bankroll every American kid to take at least a year to travel the world. We are so insulated, so needlessly arrogant, and are often clueless about the lives of others. I’m not anti-American. It’s absurd to even need to say that. I love my country and adore what it stands for. I am also hyperaware of the distance we still must go to live up to our ideals of liberty and justice. We need to, as they say in the London tube, mind the gap. My personal mission is to impact the rates of violence against women and girls, female-identified people included. All colors, all creeds, all sizes, all ages. Treating women as second-class citizens — third class in many cases — is such a colossal waste of brainpower that it makes my head spin. Keeping females down only damages all of us; it certainly doesn’t uplift men. Our country still suffers from a deficit of female talent. I also don’t want women to be liberated because I think they are better than men. No. As abolitionist Sarah Moore Grimke said, “I ask no favors for my sex; I surrender not our claim to equality. All I ask of our brethren is that they will take their feet from off our necks and permit us to stand upright on the ground which God has designed us to occupy.” (This quote is often misattributed to the revered Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who loved saying it.) Starting here and now, let’s all take a firm stand to support the new administration. And let’s take the next four years to launch clarion calls for ending sexism, racism, classism — OK, all the “isms” need to go except Buddhism: That can stay. I’ll leave you with two quotes that I regard as verbal and emotional vaccinations. One is tongue-in-cheek, the other, heartfelt; both are true in my experience. Charlotte Whitton, the first female mayor of a major North American city (Ottawa), said, “Whatever women do, they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.” As we progress, please take stock of your or others’ judgments of Kamala Harris. Is there a double, perhaps a triple, standard at play? An easy way to tell is to ask yourself, “Would this criticism be made of a white man?” If not, take heed — sexism and racism are lurking. The second quote is from the late, great Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, who said, “What the people want is very simple: They want an America as good as its promise.” Amen. I’m sure Barbara is smiling right now, as are legions of great women of all colors. Go, Biden! Go, Harris!n Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! t 8 years old, Noah Reich took a handful of pills and went to bed. As his eyes closed, he thought he made the right decision. Ashamed of his sexual orientation and after the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard — a gay college student, who was beaten, tortured and left for dead — Reich wanted to spare his family the grief and decided to try suicide. “I had learned from all these different authority figures that being gay was unacceptable — that it would bring harm to my family or to my loved ones” recalled Reich, now 31 living in Encino, Calif. with his partner David Maldonado. “And so, as a little kid, I ended up taking a handful of pills with the intent of not waking up.” Fortunately, Reich woke up. Tucked into his “blankie” — which always protected him from the monsters of the night — his first sight as he awoke were his mother’s eyes and smile. “At some point, my mom had tucked me into my blankie,” said Reich. “I remember waking up and just seeing my mom’s eyes and smile. In that moment, I knew how loved I was.” Reich carried this loving feeling throughout his life and decided to share it with everyone, through his nonprofit Classroom of Compassion. With his partner Maldonado, Reich first spread the message of love at the 2018 Los Angeles Pride Parade. “We found that, for us, creating a space and creating a practice where we can honor the lives that we’re losing in this American story,” said Reich. “That became something that we knew was more and more important by the day.” Saddened by the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, and as the second anniversary of the Pulse nightclub attack approached, the pair made a memorial with an important message. They took to the streets of West Hollywood with a banner made out of baby blankets, some with patterns of baby birds and lions, with a message spelled out with silver balloons: “I Hope U Know How Loved U Are.” “It’s this reminder that you are worthy of love, you are worthy of care just as you are,” Reich said. “I think that’s become our rallying cry and our reminder from community to community that you are worthy of love. You are worthy of being here and that we need you here and that humanity needs you here.” In the years following their debut at the LA Pride Parade, Maldonado and Reich continued to spread that message through memorials at sites of mass shootings such as Newtown, Connecticut, Las Vegas and Pittsburgh. “With our altarpieces and our memorials, we’re really trying to just reclaim that public space,” said Maldonado. “So often it’s drenched in tragedy.” “With all of our memorial pieces, we hope to just remind people of the humanity of each of these stories,” Reich added. During the COVID-19 pandemic, their work and memorials slowed down as the two sheltered in place. Soon they realized the privilege they had. They felt gifted “with the ability and the means” to keep themselves safe indoors while many didn’t have that luxury. Like many others, in the summer of 2020, they decided to hit the streets to protest and also continued their work by creating memorials for Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and more locally Anthony McClain and Juan Carlos Hernandez. After a decade of lunchbreaks in Pasadena, Reich was deeply saddened

when he heard about the death of McClain. An officer fatally shot McClain, a Black man, during a traffic stop late last summer. McClain was shot twice in the back as he ran away from the police. “When I first learned about the death of Anthony McClain, I was heartbroken [and] shocked,” said Reich. “[I] almost didn’t want to admit that it could happen in a community or city like Pasadena.” To honor McClain, Maldonado and Reich set up a memorial for the longtime Pasadena resident. The memorial, much like the ones the couple has made before, was a picture of McClain surrounded by flowers and candles. “We began the practice of sharing Anthony’s story and creating a space for Anthony’s family, his friends and the community that was mourning him,” said Reich. The two built a memorial honoring McClain, however many residents warned Maldonado and Reich the memorial would be removed. It soon was but Reich promised that they would return to create another one. Even though 2020 had been traumatic for many including Maldonado and Reich, the couple believed that it was their job to forge on ahead and spread this message of love even more so. “Compassion is being in touch with the suffering of the world,” Reich said. “And reaching out in some way in hopes to alleviate the suffering of another. “That need for love. That need to remind people of love. That message of care. And that reminder to care for one another and to care for ourselves. We have found [it] to be more and more necessary.” n Classroom of Compassion classroomofcompassion.com @classroomofcompassion 01.28.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

COVID-19 DEATH LEAVES A DOZEN CATS IN NEED PASADENA HUMANE CALLS FOR DONATIONS TO HELP THEM

• For two weeks Pasadena has seen a decline in COVID-19 cases, however, officials fear that new more contagious strains of the virus may reverse the decline. On Jan. 24 the city reported a 77.7 seven-day average compared to 188.1 on Jan. 11. While the caseload may be trending downward hospitalizations in the city continue to be overwhelmed by patients, however, they are also seeing a decline in COVID-positive patients. As of Jan. 25, there are 164 COVID-19 patients at Huntington Hospital, 29 of whom are in the ICU. • Amid the decline in COVID-19 cases across the state, Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted the statewide stay-at-home orders, lifting the state-mandated curfew and closure of outdoor dining. All counties will return to the previous colored tier system dictated the level restrictions based on the spread of the virus. Hospitals in the Southern California region still have zero ICU capacity. However, experts such as Pasadena Public Health Director Dr. YingYing Goh, believe that hospital records typically lag behind caseload data. • Last week Mayor Victor Gordo penned a letter to Newsom, asking for more doses of the COVID-19 vaccines and requesting help to turn the Rose Bowl into a massive vaccine distribution site. To date, Pasadena is in phase 1b, tier 1 of the vaccination plan with 9,117 total doses administered to residents. Recently, Los Angeles County has done something similar by converting Dodger Stadium to a vaccination site. — Information compiled by Matthew Rodriguez

welve cats were found in a woman’s rental unit Jan. 19 after she died of coronavirus. The animals were well fed and friendly, but in poor health. Some of the hoarded cats will require surgery, so Pasadena Humane is actively seeking donations. A few cats were missing patches of fur as a result of fleas. “All of them had pretty severe upper respiratory infections, which is common when a number of cats are living in a confined space,” said Jack Hagerman, Pasadena Humane’s vice president of community engagement. “A number had varying degrees of bad ear infections. One of them had an ear infection that was so bad, it was affecting its balance.” Others had significant eye infections and possible entropion eyelids, which is a congenital deformation, that will require a costly procedure. Entropic eyelids are turned inward so the eyelashes and skin rub against the eyeballs, causing irritation. Hagerman estimates that will cost Pasadena Humane between $1,200 to $2,500 per cat. Until the eye infections heal, Pasadena Humane doesn’t know how many of the cats will require the surgery. At least two of the cats are pregnant. Pasadena Humane was already expecting kittens because every spring brings a deluge of unwanted kittens. Many of the hoarded cats have gone to experienced foster homes that can administer prescribed treatments. “Sometimes well-intentioned people can become animal hoarders,” Hagerman said. “Animal hoarding cases usually start with the individual having best intentions, but don’t have the wherewithal to manage their population when it gets out of hand,” he added. Psychologists have identified red flags, but animal hoarders are often, “people who have really big hearts.” One telltale sign of hoarding is the smell. Already under financial stress due to the pandemic, Pasadena Humane needs funds to cover the cost of this neglected dozen. To make donations, call 626-792-7151 or visit pasadenahumane.org. n 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 01.28.21

ollowing Gov. Gavin Newsom lifting the safe-at-home order, Pasadena City Manager Steve Mermell announced that all outdoor dining and essential businesses may resume as soon as possible. The lifting of the ban places Pasadena and the rest of Southern California back in the colored tier system prior to Newsom’s December health order. “That places Pasadena and the rest of the Southern California in the purple tier and allows us to go back to the same business operations that existed in late November and early December,” he said during the city council meeting. “Outdoor dining will be able to resume and other businesses will be able to resume as well.” In addition to outdoor dining, other businesses such as retail stores may now operate at 25%, hair and nail salons are now open for indoor services, wineries may operate outdoor however bars and breweries must remain closed. “This doesn’t mean we should drop our guard,” Mermell said. “The surge is still here, although cases have leveled off.”

POLICE OVERSIGHT COMMISSION

O

n Monday, the city council unanimously passed a resolution determining the stipend and selection of the police oversight commission. According to the resolution, members of the commission will receive $100 per meeting totaling $1,100 for the 11 members. Each councilmember can nominate one person to the commission, for a total of eight members. The nominees must live in Pasadena. The last three nominees will represent community-based organizations. The community-based nominees must go through an application process which is then sent to the Public Safety Committee, which, in turn, will send their recommendations to the city council. The rules and regulations of the committee were sent to the PSC. n

W

ith the tagline of “Making memories since 1943,” Twoheys has added a touch of fun to an already-miserable 2021. The South Pasadena eatery has resurrected carhops, the rollerskating outdoor servers who were popular at the legendary restaurant from the 1950s to the mid-1970s. “A lot of loyal patrons who are elderly remember the carhop back in the day,” said Tanya Christos, one of the co-owners. “During this time of unprecedented way of doing business, we had to come up with ways of not only just pivoting the business but coming up with creative and interesting marketing ideas.” General Manager Bill Hamel asked about reintroducing the carhop and found the original carhop trays online. “We are proud to reintroduce the carhop dining concept that was introduced by the Twohey family decades ago,” Christos said. “We believe that bringing back this tradition allows diners to visit more often, while enjoying our old-time favorite/new menu items and practicing safety protocols from the safe haven of their own cars.” To coincide with the carhop service, the restaurant’s executive chefs, Gerardo Talamantes Sr. and Enrique Elias, created three menus that reflect classic American fare from the original menu and the new items: • Breakfast to go: classic buttermilk or old-fashioned pancakes, French toast, Belgian malted waffle and handcrafted corned beef hash. • Lunch to go: classic original Stink-O Burger, Twoheys’ original onion rings, Heckels prime rib dip sandwich and fish and chips. • Dinner to go: handcrafted meatloaf, house-roasted turkey dinner and Southern fried chicken. • Cocktails to go: Meridian, Snake Trail, Seco Washout and Raymond old fashioned. Customers can order breakfast, lunch and dinner from Twoheys’ to-go menus and

reserve one of six designated parking spots by calling 626-284-7387, ext. 1, 30 minutes in advance. Upon arrival, patrons should call the restaurant and share the reserved parking spot number. The restaurant will bring the to-go food to each car on a classic carhop tray that clips to the vehicle’s window for a contact-free dining experience. To add to the fun, Christos and her team created a Twoheys playlist on Spotify. When customers pull into their reserved space, they can log on to the music streaming service and hear curated tunes from the 1950s to 1970s. “We’re trying to do what we can to hang in there, just as all small businesses are,” Christos said. The neighborhood restaurant is known for its soda fountain, which serves Twoheys award-winning bittersweet, milk chocolate and caramel sundaes. The wellknown eatery has added a new twist on the American diner experience with seven hand-crafted specialty cocktails, such as its signature cocktail, the Stink-o-Tini. A family affair The award-winning Twoheys Restaurant opened Oct. 10 in South Pasadena. Twoheys launched in 1943 when owner Jack Twohey opened his first restaurant on Arroyo Boulevard in Pasadena. At that time, the restaurant had 37 seats and quickly became known as the premier hamburger place. The Little Stink-O, clothes pin and tear drop logo was trademarked by Twohey in 1943. It originated when he overheard a woman patron of the restaurant exclaim, “Oh-Stink-O,” when a gentleman next to her was served a hamburger generously garnished with onions and pickles. Since it was founded, Twoheys has welcomed celebrities including actors Cary Grant, Mickey Rooney, Bill Murray, painter/illustrator Norman Rockwell and author/ screenwriter Ray Bradbury. Christos does her best to make guests feel like family. After all, it worked for Christos, a longtime patron. When she and her family found out the longtime owners wanted to retire, they bought the restaurant. “We have been patrons of Twoheys for a long time,” she said. “Growing up, my family lived close by. It was a family hangout. We went there for family meals after sporting events and birthdays. We were already involved in the restaurant business. We knew the children taken over the restaurant from their parents. “They were getting up there in years and they asked us if we were interested in purchasing Twoheys.” The family hadn’t been involved in a full breakfast, lunch and dinner concept. However, guests were so loyal that Christos and her family couldn’t turn it down. “We were able to open in the middle of the crisis in October, but the response was overwhelming,” she said. “People were telling us thank you for coming back and being here for them. They wanted normalcy back in their lives. We’re really grateful for the legacy Twoheys has created.” Recently, Christos developed family meal packs to allow individuals an ease in ordering and value. The Twoheys staff also bought back the lobster and rib feasts. They’re promoting their feasts and family meals on social media. In addition, Twoheys Restaurant offers its food truck with a choice of three menu packages or a custom menu from any of Twoheys’ favorite menu items. As part of the package, Twoheys provides a state-of-the-art sound system offering music for those who wish to hold socially responsible distanced events. In South Pasadena, the new 5,200-square-foot restaurant’s interior was designed by Zoumas Design of South Pasadena and constructed by Peter Koulos Construction. It brings together classic elements in a contemporary design, combining the nostalgia of a diner with a lunch counter and old-time soda fountain in a refined, open and bright space. The original Stink-o logo and signage has been updated for the 21st century with a youthful and whimsical design. “We didn’t do any advertising when we opened our doors,” Christos said. “We just wanted it to be organic. We wanted to get our feet wet and to understand this environment. “We had an overwhelming response and we’re grateful for that. We were open about two months before we had to close down again. We still haven’t opened our dining room yet. We did have to expand our patios. We have two patios that we had to expand to incorporate additional seating. For the most part, people love the outdoor seating. It’s definitely here to say.” n

iguel Gutierrez asks, “Did you know that the Fuerte avocado began right here in Altadena?” He explained there was once a West India Gardens nursery on the block just north of the Mountain View Cemetery — near Gutierrez’s home — where many avocado trees can still be seen. About 100 years ago, the beginning of the California avocado industry was built upon the quality of one variety: the Fuerte. In 1911, 21-year-old American explorer Carl Schmidt traveled to Mexico for the West India Gardens nursery in Altadena, once located on the north side of Calveras, west of Marengo. Schmidt was in search of quality avocados. In Atlixo, Mexico, he found avocado grower Alejandro Le Blanc and arranged to cut budwood from nearly 30 varieties of avocado trees. The budwood refers to the small branches used in grafting onto rootstock to create new trees. Schmidt numbered these and shipped them via Wells Fargo Express to the Altadena nursery. Most of the buds didn’t survive and it was often attributed to a freeze in 1913. Only one bud, No. 15, survived, flourished and produced a fruit of exceptional quality. That variety is known today at the Fuerte avocado. Most of these details were found in the California Avocado Association’s annual reports, which described how Schmidt was working for Fred Popenoe, the West India Gardens’ owner. In the 1940 annual report, Popenoe’s son, Wilson, wrote about the origin of the name Fuerte. Wilson worked at his father’s nursery and reported that No. 15 “was so much more vigorous than the rest that it attracted our attention before the buds were a foot in height. One day, when father and I were going over the Schmidt introductions, we commented particularly upon the high percentage of buds of this variety which had “taken,” and the strong, vigorous start they were making. Father remarked, ‘That’s the strongest grower of the lot. We’ll call it Fuerte.’” From the 1940s through the ’60s, researchers and writers pored over the various original writings to debate if it was because of a freeze that No. 15 was given the name fuerte. Regardless, the name stuck. The Fuerte avocado is often recognized as the archetypal avocado, green in color, shaped like a pear, with smooth, medium-thin skin that peels easily. The flesh is dense and pale green. It is marginally oily with a rich, creamy flavor — considered by many to be the best-tasting avocado. The tree is large and spreading and is indeed one of the more cold-hardy varieties, with leaves that have a strong anise smell when crushed. The fruit has a tendency to alternate in bearing, producing an adequate crop every other year, depending on factors like weather at setting time. In 1914, 50 of the Fuerte avocados developed at the West India Gardens Nursery were sold to J.T. Whedon, instead of the ones he ordered that froze in the nursery the previous year. Whedon’s became the first Fuerte avocado orchard of the hundreds of commercial ones in California today. Fuerte avocado became the cultivar upon which the California avocado industry was built and was the mainstay of California avocados until the 1930s, when it was displaced by the Haas avocado, whose skin is thicker and can thereby handle shipment better. n

RHYE, “Home” (Loma Vista): HHH

ALABAMA SLIM, “The Parlor” (Cornelius Chapel/Music Maker Relief Foundation): HHHH

JUSTIN MOSES, “Fall Like Rain” (Mountain Fever): HHHH

More polished than 2018’s “Sleepless Dreamer,” the Driftwood Singers/Blank Tapes alum’s sunlit new release confidently blends her pop and Americana tastes and centers her warm vocal tones in glossy, ’70s-style arrangements. Beneath the disco-ball dazzle of ABBA-esque opener “Only for Tonight,” doubts ripple (“Didn’t I know, wasn’t made for a one-night stand”). Later tracks feel truest as they dive into those undercurrents to wrestle with uncomfortable transitions and climate fears (“Don’t Even Feel Like Myself,” “Imposter,” the soul-vibed “As Long as You’re Mine” and Fleetwood Mac-esque “Slipping Away”). pearlcharlesmusic.bandcamp.com

The spirit of John Lee Hooker haunts these 10 rhythmically magnetic tracks, recorded in New Orleans in 2019. Backed by a lean groove machine that includes guitarist cousin Little Freddie King and keyboardist Jimbo Mathus, Slim moans “All Night Long” over his and King’s plangent guitars, skewers the Oval Office’s recently evicted occupant with a sly rap during “Forty Jive” and keeps his blues taut and real. corneliuschapelrecords.com

AARON FRAZER, “Introducing…” (Dead Oceans/Easy Eye): HHH½

Best known for sharing lead vocals in retro-soul outfit Durand Jones & the Indications, Frazer takes a solo turn that makes the most of his satiny falsetto. He mostly splits songwriting credits with producer Dan Auerbach, although hooky standouts “Have Mercy” and “Lover Girl” also feature outside input (Pat McLaughlin and Paul Overstreet, respectively). Frazer writes from the perspective of a burning Earth during Marvin Gaye-evoking groover “Bad News” and takes it to church for the sweetly swaying “Leanin’ on Your Everlasting Love,” but mostly exalts love’s simpler pleasures. With an ear-kissing balance of Hammond B3 organ, slightly pinched synths, horns, strings, percussion and creamy harmonies, it sounds like swooning into the ’60s might feel. aaronfrazermusic.com

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA SEPTET WITH WYNTON MARSALIS, “The Democracy! Suite” (Blue Engine): HHH½

Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis leads a septet of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members, seeking unity amid division and chaos. Marsalis’ eight-part suite sparks to life when Walter Blandings’ saxophone suddenly pierces the second track, “Sloganize, Patronize, Realize, Revolutionize,” and leads it into more darkly urgent territory. “Ballot Box Bounce” is a rhythmically frenetic exchange of solos, while the funkier “That Dance We Do (That You Love Too)” mirrors moves and “Deeper Than Dreams” showcases Dan Nimmer’s bluesy piano and Obed Calvaire’s exquisite brush work. They take it to the street for swing closer “That’s When All Will See,” a jubilant celebration of hope and community. jazz.org/JLCO

After opening with transcendent a cappella vocalizing by the Danish National Girls’ Choir — a nod to his family heritage — Topanga-based composer Michael Milosh begins exploring his titular concept with the melodically inviting “Come in Closer,” braiding his airy falsetto and Wurlitzer with Peter Jacobson’s cello and Paul Cartwright’s viola and violin. It sets a hopeful tone for an uneven, R&B-dappled set whose best moments remind that life’s most binding joys are domestic. Highlights: the hypnotic “Fire,” “Sweetest Revenge,” the guitar-laced “Need a Lover,” and the DNG Choir’s balm-like a cappella “Outro.” rhyemusic.com

Dynamic instrumentals, heartfelt story songs, and guest appearances by Del McCoury and Moses’ ex-boss, Dan Tyminski, combine to remind how cathartically satisfying bluegrass can be. Moses, who was named Resophonic Guitar Player of the Year in 2020 by the International Bluegrass Music Association, here plays six-string guitar, banjo and mandolin, and his Weissenborn presumably inspired clever slide instrumental “Wise & Born.” His sparkling tones and crisply arpeggiated flights across the frets similarly animate “Taxland” (featuring mandolinist wife Sierra Hull) and “Watershed,” and make this one of the most ear-pleasing acoustic recordings to be heard in recent memory. Justinmoses.com

STILL CORNERS, “The Last Exit” (Wrecking Light): HHH

UK vocal stylist Tessa Murray and Austinite Greg Hughes again deliver musical escapism, navigating mysterious roads and noir-ish visions over jangly guitars, thrumming beats and kaleidoscopic synths. Murray’s sultry slur offers both comfort and warning during “A Kiss Before Dying” and the more emotional “Crying” as Hughes’ baritone guitar and whistles evoke mythic spaghetti Westerns that could have inspired the cinematic “White Sands.” Standouts include vibey instrumental “Shifting Dunes” and the eerie title track (“I’m drifting off to nowhere, the past an echo on my mind/ In the middle of the desert, the devil trailing just behind/ It’s a shame that I had to disappear”). stillcorners.com

OYIWANE, “Music from Saharan WhatsApp 11” (Sahel Sounds): HHH

Part of Sahel Sounds’ ongoing “Music from Saharan WhatsApp” series, this lo-fi EP from Niger ensemble Oyiwane has a magnetic pulse that suggests other West African desert blues as well as wavering signals from the cellphone on which its four tracks were recorded. Occasionally reminiscent of Tartit, it’s heartening to hear women raising their voices about modern-day issues; Kader “Barmo” Balla leads four other vocalists and Zakari Yahaya, whose steady hand percussion’s more prominent than the folk melodies spun by Tuareg guitarists Mahmoud Ingatan and Bilal Oumberak. Musical tracks and video (of the band performing in Agadez) available for a limited time at oyiwane.bandcamp.com; all sales proceeds go to band.
