I

t’s that time of year again when Scottsdale feels like the ultimate place to be. Between the Barrett-Jackson Car Auction, revving up Jan. 10, and the Waste Management Phoenix Open, teeing up Jan. 26, there’s barely time to take a deep breath— especially with all the Super Bowl-related activity bubbling throughout the city. We hope this festive climate as well as the associated creativity springing up all around the Greater Airpark inspire you to keep taking your business to the next level. In this issue, we look at how technology is changing the way brands relate to consumers, from event goers to mall shoppers. As the new year begins, you likely have your own list of tech resolutions. Maybe you will finally explore what’s involved in developing that app idea of yours, or maybe it’s time to examine the real cost of transforming your so-so website into a lean-mean performance vehicle. Our experts provide some excellent insights. And just for fun—and also because the Museum of the West opens this month in Old Town—check out Joan Fudala’s column about Scottsdale’s museums past and present. Happy 2015!

Kimberly Hundley, editor kimberly@timespublications.com

Times Media Group and the Scottsdale Airpark News would like to thank Bucca di Beppo of Scottsdale for its excellent job playing host to the TMG holiday lunch last month. As usual, Janet and her team provided exceptional service and we all had a wonderful time. What a great way to end a terrific year. Thank you!

“INVISIBLE”

STAINS Q : Last year during my New Year’s Eve party, I spilled white wine on my blouse and thought it disappeared! But when I took it out of my dryer it left a brown spot. Help! A: Be careful when a spill on your outfit dries invisibly. You might think, “Oh, good, it didn’t stain.” But much of what we consume (and spill) has sugar in it, and the sugar turns brown when heated during drying or finishing. Bring it to Prestige Cleaners. In most cases, we can spot the area and still get the residue out before it becomes a problem.

The Watchful Salesman BeaconStream founder Venkat Nallapati wants to fill our malls with tiny transmitters to help us shop, dine and play. As long as we don’t mind sharing our whereabouts.

Venkat Nallapati displays the BeaconStream transmitter that streams messages to nearby smartphones with extreme accuracy. The technology has applications for retail hubs such as Scottsdale Quarter.

EXT MONTH, AS TENS OF THOUSANDS DESCEND on the University of Phoenix Stadium for Super Bowl XLIX, they’ll get help finding their seats from a new kind of usher: their smartphone. As it did for last year’s Super Bowl at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, the NFL has been outfitting the Glendale stadium with beacons: tiny wireless transmitters that can send location-driven messages to smartphones as the users pass within range.

…continued from page 19 Can’t find your section? Beacons can precisely triangulate where you are and guide you right to your seat. Got time first to grab some grub? Beacons can instantly check with each other and tell you where to find the shortest beer line. Small, inexpensive and as easy to install as a stick-up air freshener, a beacon—technically a battery-powered Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transmitter—has just one job, but it does it flawlessly. “It simply detects when you walk into proximity, and can stream content to your device. And that’s it,” says Venkat Nallapati, founder of Beaconstream—a business with offices split between Bengaluru, India, and the Scottsdale Airpark—which is aiming to become the Valley’s first big player in the emerging market. “It doesn’t care about gathering your personal information. It just does one thing. It sees your device and says, ‘This is the coupon or information you need to get at this point. I’m giving it up.’ That’s all.” BeaconStream was late to the party on the Super Bowl, although the company

did do a soft launch of its product at the stadium’s Arizona Sports Fan Expo last June, where Chief Marketing Officer Chris Damron met with representatives for the Cardinals, Coyotes and Suns. “We talked to them, but unfortunately where those applications are coming from is the NFL, NHL, NBA,” Damron says. (The Super Bowl was snatched up prior to last year’s game by Qualcomm’s Gimbal beacon division.) “It’s coming from the national leagues.” Nevertheless, the company is hoping the Super Bowl will serve as a massive business demo for the new technology, which can pinpoint a smartphone user’s location with much more accuracy than location-tracking technologies that use satellite-based GPS and send them “experiential” marketing content at precisely the right time. “An app like Foursquare uses GPS technology,” says Damron. “Well, inside the mall it just doesn’t work. Not to mention the fact that GPS has about 60 feet of inaccuracy. It can be off.”

Nallapati supplies an example: “If you are at the Macy’s store in the mall, GPS doesn’t know exactly where you are. It may place you at Macy’s or JCPenney. With beacons, an app not only knows you’re in Macy’s, it knows what department you’re in.” The struggle for businesses, Damron explains, is trying to get beyond the shotgun approach of digital marketing, social media or email. “This allows businesses to really target customers and send them relevant content exactly where they are.”

Huge power play

While consumers can download a free BeaconStream app that will simply receive coupons from participating mom-and-pop shops when they walk past their doors, BeaconStream’s main product is a software developer’s kit (SDK) that gives app developers for bigger corporations the tools to incorporate beacon capabilities into their latest update. It’s why the start-up—whose parent company, AdeptPros, has already been …continues on page 22

And if you take those apps and you incorporate beacon technology, you’ve got a huge power play there.” For Nallapati, who has ventured into a series of enterprise mobility start-ups during his 20 years in the IT industry, the beacon is the bacon: that one strip of add-on app code that can potentially bring everyone to the table. “Where businesses are failing is in doing good mobile marketing,” Nallapati says. “It’s all about the moment of encounter. With beacons, it’s easy to catch people at that moment.”

Unassuming and, most of all, not pushy, it stands quietly in the corner, only giving you the information you need when you need it. “It becomes like a watchful salesman,” says DC Ranch resident Nallapati, an Indian IT whiz with a resume that spans a string of international Fortune 500 companies. “It knows where you are, but it won’t

push you or anything. If you’re in a shoe section looking for Nike shoes, it knows you’re there, and it can cross-sell—maybe send you a coupon for a matching jacket. But if you are not wanting the coupon, you can simply close the notification and put it in the background. All the coupons you are getting are stacked,” Nallapati says, describing a framework similar to the iPhone’s native Passbook app. “So you can view everything at once later.” The beacon experience, after all, is about customer intent. “Think like an experiential marketer,” writes Karen Macumber, CMO of the price-tracking firm ShopAdvisor. “While most of us think about context as related to content, for proximity marketing the context has to be a combination of location and moment in time.” In other words, today’s on-demand consumers are most receptive to advertising when it catches them at just the right moment, and in just the right place. All a beacon gets from each device scanned is its location. “Email captures more data,” says Nallapati, countering the common privacy concern people voice about proximity marketing. “If you open Google, it tracks everything. All a beacon knows is where you were in a store. It won’t even know if you bought anything or not.” Still, as any watchful salesperson knows, you can tell a lot about a customer by what products they linger over. Particularly in this age, when consumers visit brick-and-mortar stores to physically check out products they later purchase (at a discount) online, and use “check-ins” at favored restaurants and stores to broadcast their interests through social media. With beacon strategies, notes Macumber, “you are bringing virtual and physical worlds together.” Even better, beacons catch us at the point we abandon brick-and-mortar to go e-shopping—and effectively beat us to the punch. “Let’s say you’re looking at a TV in Macy’s,” says Nallapati, again citing the retail giant that’s been an early adopter of beacon technology. “You have to be very close to the TV, then you get the coupon. You get the specs, video, anything. The content can be streamed in any format.” Before you can pick up your smartphone to find a better price or customer reviews on that TV, your device is already displaying the store’s best deal and marketing pitch. Because it’s so in tune with the way we shop and play today, Nallapati believes he can grow BeaconStream into a bil…continues on page 24

About the biggest challenge Nallapati has had in duplicating B e a c o n S t re a m ’ s Indian success in America has been in getting its disc-shaped transmitters into key retail outlets all across the country. “In India, most of the the competition is in one or two cities,” he says. “The good thing with India, there are only 10 cities

Selling businesses on beacons is only half the challenge, admits Damron. “The second half is selling the consumers. How do you get them to opt in?” In order for beacons to transmit messages to smartphones, the devices have to first be able to read BLE Service signals (about 80 perAn Authorized Provider cent of phones today can), have Bluetooth enabled (typically a user has to turn it on in the phone’s settings), and have apps installed that can decode the messages sent through the signal. That means people have to intentionally open the door to receive

The NFL Mobile app is a good example: if you’re stuck in a long concession line at a Cardinals game, who wouldn’t welcome a notification that tells you there’s a shorter wait for hot dogs at the next LLC stand? Balls on display at the register, at the precise moment you get to the register. A recent survey of 1,300 smartphone owners by eDigitalResearch found that almost half (45 percent) of them would actually be willing for retailers to send locationbased content to their smartphone if it meant more personalized messages for them. But Damron admits that persuading consumers to download and enable an app that merely sends them more marketing material as they walk through a mall can be a tough sell. The better option is to persuade retailers to build beacon capabilities into the apps their customers already use, pairing the technology with the app’s existing data-gathering functions for a truly personalized experience. “For the larger retailers that have their own apps, the BeaconStream technology can easily be embedded into them,” he says. “Overnight a developer could implement it and have thousands of consumers on beacon technology, because their app is already out there and people are using it. They update it and next time the consumer goes into the app, they’ve got the technology added.” Talking businesses into jumping on the beacon bandwagon has been easier. BeaconStream recently signed up Sushi Roku, part of the Innovative Dining Group, which will start using beacons throughout its restaurant located inside the Scottsdale W Hotel, and Damron says they’re negotiating with businesses around the Airpark as well. “There are so many uses for this technology,” he says. “We’ve seen some Realtors doing things with signs, so when a car drives by you get the listing of a house. Every time you turn around, there’s somebody doing something different with it. What’s interesting is when we go and sit with these businesses, they always come up with some different idea or tweak of how to use it. Things that we haven’t even thought of!” Adds Nallapati, “As soon as I saw where this technology was going, we jumped into it. We want to be ahead of the curve on this.”  Adept Pros BeaconStream 14301 N. 87th Street, Suite 110 Scottsdale, AZ 85260 1-877-664-2777 info@beaconstream.com www.adeptpros.com www.beaconstream.com

How much does a small business website cost in 2015? By Eric Olsen, Fasturtle

D

uring our 14 years in Scottsdale, we have worked with hundreds of small businesses on website design. Here is a typical presales conversation: A business owner asked three website development companies to submit a proposal to design her company website. She supplied the developers with the same “scope of work” document that listed the website’s goals and functions. A week later each of the three web developers came back to the client with their estimates. The first one had priced the project at $2,000, the second at $9,000 and the final web developer estimated the project at $22,000.

If you’re waiting for the punch line … well, there isn’t one. That’s because the joke is on the client who now needs to figure out why these estimates are so wildly different and which one represents the most realistic and reasonable budget for her needs. Unfortunately, most business owners have no way of knowing which bids are unrealistically low, which are outrageously inflated and which are in the right ballpark. The following prices can be debated but are based on our award-winning professional website design and development. Prices will vary depending on your specific requirements.

On average, the following figures can be applied to estimating the cost of a small business website. 1. Domain Name – $12 to $35/year 2. Hosting – $100 to $600 a year (depending on traffic and hosting services) 2. Web Planning, Design and Development Time – 60 hours and up 4. Important Factors

When preparing to budget web design costs, be sure to ask yourself the following questions: • Is this a brand new site or a redesign of an existing site? • How prepared are you to ask for bids? Have you prepared a detailed requirements document? • Do you need a blog or a content management system (CMS)? • Have graphics already been created for the site or purchased? • Do you want the site to automatically resize for mobile and tablets? • Do you need multimedia elements (Flash, video, etc.) on the site? • How much content do you currently have and how much will need to be created (copywriting)? • Do you need other special features such as social media channels, YouTube, SEO (search engine optimization) or e-commerce?

Latino Donor Collaborative www.latinocollaborative.com The clean, arresting three-topic header “Who We Are/What We Do/ Get Involved” was a product of preplanning. Fasturtle staff brainstormed with the client on what the nonprofit’s three main objectives were for interacting with visitors. This solution minimizes navigation at the top and makes it easy for visitors to get the information and options they seek. Because social media is also an important factor for relationship building, links are clearly but subtly placed near the prominent search box. • Who is going to maintain the site after it has been launched? You or the firm?

Discovery and Documentation

For the best outcome, all new websites projects should begin with a required “discovery and documentation” process. This

process helps define three important elements: 1 Online brand 2 Website structure 3 Website functionality We think this process is critical because it helps set expectations on all sides and reduces potential frustrations. Simple business websites—those in which clients have a solid idea of what they want—can get by on a minimal amount of discovery and documentation, amounting to perhaps one day’s worth of effort. But—and this is a biggie—more complex websites may require weeks of meetings plus the creation of many detailed documents to fully define the project.

Custom Interface Design

Interface design—also referred to as visual design or the site’s “look and feel”—incorporates your branding, all your photos and images, even your page layouts. Don’t assume that if you already have a pre-made template you won’t need images or layouts redone. Custom interface design is usually an interactive process, meaning that the designer will show you options and then modify them based on your feedback to arrive at an approved design. Don’t skimp on the interface design. Trust me, if you do, today’s sophisticated visitors won’t give your website a second glance.

Images and Graphics

Budgeting website graphics is tricky because images can range from $10 each for cheap stock images to hundreds of dollars each for custom or high-end stock images. Incorporating compelling and appropriate graphics can make a huge difference in the effectiveness of your website. On the lowend, budget at least $100 for stock images. Remember that a good designer can make a cheap image look like a custom one. But that’s not all. You will also need

Children’s Museum of Phoenix childrensmuseumofphoenix.org During the pre-planning process, the museum and Fasturtle identified the right features to encourage visitor engagement right on the home page, showcasing a calendar of events and clickable links to buy tickets.

stock icons and buttons to complement your design.

Mobile and Responsive Design Costs

Because mobile devices have become critical to online success, your design should be mobile friendly at the very least. The best designs are “responsive,” meaning designed to automatically adjust their layout to look good and function easily on multiple devices: smartphones, tablets, and desktop/laptop computers. Creating a responsive design can cost 20 percent to 30 percent more than a site designed solely for a desktop web browser. This additional cost can be attributed to the extra effort the interface designer makes to design the site’s appearance and function on the various devices, which in turn will have to be programmed by the programmer. Finally, more testing is required before the site is ready to launch.

Costs for Content Creation and Insertion

When it comes to adding content, the least expensive model for small-business owners is to create all the content and insert it into the site via a content management system (CMS). Content and copywriting is the lifeblood of a quality website. This is what converts your average browser into a true client. If you are not the wordsmith you think you are, make sure you hire this portion out. …continues on page 31

Special Features Often Cost Extra

A ton of extra features are available that web developers can integrate into your site to improve your business, but these extras can add up. Some features may be “included” in your website framework, but beware, just because they are “included” doesn’t mean they look or work the way you would want. The estimates below reflect the general requirements we have seen. However, many factors can push these costs even higher.

Custom CMS

For clients who want to manage their own content, the web designer can integrate and customize content management systems (CMS). We work with PHP-based open-source CMS solutions like WordPress. Costs for integrating and customizing a CMS can range from $2,000 to $20,000+. • Training and Documentation – You will need a set of instructions explaining how to maintain and edit site content. Depending on how extensive the material is, expect to pay from $400 to $1,500. Video training is included in all of our website design programs. • Blog – Many clients request a blog (WordPress or something similar) within their website, customized to reflect their website’s branding and design. Adding a blog ranges from $500 to $2,500. • For e-commerce shopping carts, catalogs and payment processing, add $1,000 to $5,000 or more depending on requirements. • Email Marketing Campaigns – Clients that want to gather emails and send out branded email blasts for announcements or newsletters require an email management tool. Companies such as ours can integrate third-party tools such as Constant Contact along with an email blast template design. We can even manage your email blasts. $795 and up • Targeted Landing – Landing pages are pages that promote a specific product or service. They are usually part of an email, social media or banner ad campaign. Typically the cost to design and create these pages start at $250. • Contact forms and surveys: $300 and up • Newsletters: $400 to $900 • Advertising integration (Google AdWords): $300 to $1,000s • Photo gallery: $250 to $500

• Metrics (Google analytics, custom reports, etc.): $200 to $2,000 • SEO (on-page optimization, off-page optimization submission to search engines, etc.): $500 to $4,000 • Social media — Create and manage social media network profile (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, Google+, LinkedIn, etc.): $500 to $2,000

So How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost?

The majority small business websites that we design, develop and launch range from $6,000 to $20,000. Using the a la carte estimates above you can see how quickly elements and functionality add up. Another way to break the budget down is to assume: • 15% Planning • 25% Interface design • 40% Programming • 20% Project Management

And Don’t Forget the Maintenance Cost

Websites don’t just maintain themselves. The best websites change all the time as their strategy is tweaked and updated. Maintenance is something that most businesses forget to budget, often because they think that they can do it themselves. But the first time you delete your entire home page by mistake and lose eight hours of sales while you’re trying to get it back up and running, you’ll wish you’d spent the extra money on a quality firm with a support staff.

If your website will be a significant part of your business, don’t skimp on design and development. eing well connected no longer applies only to those with VIP suite access during the big events in the Scottsdale Airpark area this month. Thanks to digital technology, organizers are finding more ways to keep fans engaged. Cars and golf are the headliners every January in Scottsdale, and this year the National Football League’s crown jewel hits the Valley with Super Bowl XLIX and related events across multiple venues. Opportunities for fan engagement through social media, online video and interactive mobile apps offer insider access for those onsite and individuals watching at home. As smartphones become a “can’t

live without” appendage, promoters are upping the ante for digital access. The Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction and Waste Management Phoenix Open both have dedicated mobile apps. Each is available as a free download.

Beyond the Block Barrett-Jackson kicks things off when it returns to WestWorld of Scottsdale Jan. 10-18. app for iOS and Android devices to keep track of cars on the docket. Responding to consumer feedback, Beyond the Block was enhanced with sharper graphics and the ability to specify and track favorite vehicles as time approaches for bidding to start. The app allows users to search for a car and a map displays where in a specific tent the vehicle can be found. Drivers will carry Android tablets for changing locations of the cars as they are moved. “The big additions to the app this year are the live car updates,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Bidders and fans alike will be able to locate their favorite vehicles on an interactive map, as well as receive alerts prior to the vehicles crossing the auction block.” Barrett-Jackson’s website will also offer a live video stream. Online viewers will have five different cameras to choose from: one always focused on the auction block, three in the staging lanes outside and one that is a produced feed with audio voiceover. The Russo and Steele Collector Car Auction, which runs Jan. 14-18 at Loop 101 and Scottsdale Road, has offered live video streaming on its website for several

years, according to Darin Roberge, marketing director. “Scottsdale is our flagship event, and we’ll have live video streaming and live tweeting of the action from open to close each day,” says Roberge.

WMPO Contests, Games There’s no shortage of fan interactivity at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which hits the TPC Scottsdale Jan. 26-Feb. 1. It’s the most technology-friendly golf tournament on the PGA TOUR, according to Rob Myers, WMPO Media Relations Director. The Waste Management Phoenix Open Mobile App, sponsored by Kyocera, is available for both iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. “Fans have really enjoyed the app. We had terrific engagement and participation over the years,” says Myers. “In 2015, we have a trivia contest sponsored by EZ 1040. It will be on the app through Jan. 25. Fans can now go on the app and answer trivia questions about the Open. At the end of each week, winners will be chosen for two Skybox tickets and two Greenskeeper tickets. …continues on page 36

…continued from page 34 “During tournament week, we’ll debut a new game on the app that is sponsored by Quicken Loans. Fans will be able to sign-up for the contest through the app and if a PGA TOUR player hits a shot within a certain distance of the hole, fans could win their mortgage paid for one month through Quicken Loans.” All that technology requires connectivity, and the entire course will be one giant hotspot with free Wi-Fi provided by Cox Business. More than a dozen new wireless access points have been added between the 18th green and 16th hole to improve capacity and reception, says Myers. The app has a leaderboard, links to social media, and detailed information on the tournament’s new security procedures, including what is and isn’t allowed into the TPC. A couple of features that will come in handy are the Car Finder and course navigation. Car Finder uses GPS functionality so users arriving at the tournament can save the location of their cars and be guided back upon their departures. Take Me There navigation lets fans search and select points of interest on the golf course. Looking for the location of

tees, greens, concession stands, restrooms or merchandise? Just tap “Take Me There” and a yellow path will be superimposed on a course map that takes you to that point of interest from your current location on course. Myers adds that the app includes TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course hole descriptions, information on Waste Management, Kyocera, the Thunderbirds, Coors Light Birds Nest, local weather and more. A daily event feature offers information and schedules detailing activities during the tournament.

NFL Mobile And since Super Bowl XLIX will be played on Feb. 1, the final day of the Phoenix Open, football fans can keep up with the latest news on the big game with the free NFL Mobile app from Verizon. NFL Mobile is available for all mobile users and provides scores, news, stats, photos and video highlights all season long, and will have a dedicated Super Bowl section. Certain premium features, like live game video, are available to Verizon premium subscribers who sign up

for a $5 monthly fee, says NFL spokesman Alex Riethmiller. A popular feature on NFL Mobile is the Super Bowl Mobile Guide with event- and game-related content. Fans can bookmark locations around the Valley, add events to their calendars and share via social media, and keep in touch with all the Super Bowl happenings via location based notifications and alerts. As for free online video streaming of the game itself, that was still to be determined at press time. “It is the broadcasters’ decisions as to how they would like to offer that stream. Since NBC is broadcasting the game, the stream will be on NBCSports. com. NFL.com and SuperBowl.com will simply direct traffic to that NBC stream,” says Riethmiller. With all that digital content available now, you too can feel like you’re part of the show.  More: barrett-jackson.com wmphoenixopen.com nfl.com/mobile russoandsteele.com

of the Year, Best Year-over-Year Sales and Most Engaged Community. The Zero Waste Challenge saw zero waste from the tournament being sent to a landfill for the first time in 2013 and completed a repeat performance in 2014 with 100 percent of waste diverted to recycling, composting and waste-to-energy facilities. To help achieve this, Waste Management replaced every trashcan with 6,000 recycling and compost bins. Other “green” initiatives include: 100 percent of the electricity to power the tournament being purchased from renewable energy; Waste Management trucks on site running on clean-burning natural gas to transport materials from the course; and substantial water savings achieved by using “gray water” from concession kitchens in the onsite portable bathrooms. Waste Management also hosts an Executive Sustainability Forum where more than 300 corporate leaders and industry experts share best practices and foster a sustainability dialogue for the future. At the 2015 Forum, guests will gain insight from keynote speakers Amory B. Lovins, who is widely considered to be among the world’s leading authorities on energy—especially its efficient use and sustainable supply; and Gwen Ruta, vice president of programs for the Environmental Defense Fund, who will discuss current policy changes that could advance a clean energy economy, and highlight private sector opportunities to push the sustainability envelope. A host of other leading speakers and panelists will also share their perspectives.

Dollars for local charities in 2014

T

he Thunderbirds, hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, will distribute more than $7 million for local charities through proceeds raised from the 2014 tournament. This marked the first time since 2008 that the Thunderbirds raised more than $7 million from tournament proceeds—the third-highest charitable donation in a single year in tournament history. Since 2003 when the tournament first brought on a title sponsor, the Thunderbirds and the Open have raised more than $67.4 million for charities. In its history, dating back to 1932, the Phoenix Open has raised more than $93.3 million for charities in Arizona. The 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open was a record-setting event. Saturday’s third-round attendance of 189,722 set an alltime single-day attendance record in Waste Management Phoenix Open history. “This tournament is showing the world how a sporting event really can make a difference,” said David Steiner, Waste Management president and CEO. “Whether it’s setting a new standard for sustainability or sending more than

ongratulations if you’re among the many companies entertaining guests at WMPO. The event can be a valuable bonding and networking opportunity. But are you sure you’re getting the most out of your investment? If there is no designated host to greet guests, for example, you could probably be doing better. It’s not too late to hone your plan and maximize results with just a few smart tweaks. 1. Have a host for your organization that is onsite all day. Many companies designate someone in the company to be the suite host for the entire week. Duties are to make sure people arrive OK, make introductions between guests, and help manage the suite. 2.

Keep track of invited guests and actual attendees (as they can differ). Follow up with attendees after the tournament.

3.

Offer games, prizes and other engaging activities in your tent/suite.

4.

Part of being a great host is to make the experience as easy as possible for your guests. Think about arranging for a car to drop them off instead of having them park and walk, especially if you anticipate they’ll be drinking.

5.

Rather than give tickets/passes out with no plan, make sure you are there to spend time with your guests. Take advantage of the opportunity to bond with clients and make introductions when action on the greens slows up.

New TV show puts local restaurants on the viewing menu

G

reat Food Good Neighbors (GFGN) launches its first official season as a full 30-minute TV show featuring local restaurants throughout Arizona and gourmet camp cooking with Kim Hanna’s Camping For Foodies. The show airs on AZTV Channel 7 (Cox Cable 13) on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. Local television personalities Tray Goodman and Lisa Acquafredda co-host the show and take viewers behind the scenes and into the kitchens of two Arizona eateries on each show. Additionally, Kim Hanna, creator and host of Camping For Foodies, will bring viewers on a journey while cooking gourmet meals on location at campsites throughout the Maricopa County Regional Park System. “I’m on a campaign to eliminate hot dogs and beans at campsites across the country and I’m thrilled to be part of a weekly program to show viewers how easy it is to eat like a king while camping,” Hanna said. Last season GFGN ran as a pilot show with five-minute segments within the Morning Scramble on AZTV. “The concept proved to be so popular that we expanded to a weekly 30-minute show with Shamrock Foods joining our sponsor community,” said Joe Reynolds, executive producer for the show. “I’m really passionate about this show and about our local community,” Acquafredda said. Goodman added, “GFGN isn’t a traditional cooking show because it goes beyond the kitchen and highlights how each business is unique and is

How expensive is it to build an app? This is not an easy question to answer without a scope document handy. I hear it all the time though. It’s like asking how much it costs to build a house. To arrive at an estimate, more information must be gathered. A simple app will start at around $10K and a very complex app can cost several hundred thousand dollars. Top agencies might charge upwards of three times that of a freelancer. And from one agency to the next, the price may vary drastically as well. In my experience, the sweet spot is around $20,000 for a simple app that communicates with an online database and is deployed on both app stores. What considerations should be made around cost? Freelancers and offshore developers can be unreliable after project launch. Also hourly rates are irrelevant since some developers work much faster than others, and good quality typically comes with a higher price tag. If an app is too expensive to build, what options are there? Have a prototype built instead and seek funding. The further along an idea is into development, the more willing investors will be to stake their money. A prototype should cost about half of a fully functioning app and can look and feel like the intended final product but have limited functionality or hard-coded content. In what other ways can money be saved? It’s important to think small with any new app idea. Validate there is demand for the product being built before throwing a bunch of money at it. Don’t go overboard with the nice-to-have features, but rather, build a minimum viable product first and then listen to your users to find out what additional features they want. How can ideas be protected? A common concern for aspiring app entrepreneurs is that by sharing their idea with others, they run the risk of having it stolen. An NDA (nondisclosure agreement) will provide legal protection against people stealing or talking about your idea. However, an NDA can quickly detour friends, family and organizations from giving you the feedback and advice you’re seeking. My non-legal advice is that if you intend to go into great detail about how you will execute your idea, you should have an NDA signed. If, however, you merely want to share the idea and receive feedback, don’t sport the legal documents.

Prototypes, such as this one recently designed by Widely Interactive, can be installed on phones to look and feel like fully functioning apps. The company behind this app—providing a new way to receive discounts from local venues—is now ready to seek funding.

Scottsdale’s Best Car Wash & BBQ What are the common pitfalls and how can they be avoided? This industry is not regulated, and therefore anyone can offer mobile app development services. This should be of concern to anyone considering spending a good chunk of money on an app. I’ve heard the horror stories. However, with a little due diligence, you can find a developer that is right for your project. It all comes down to experience, references and location. Make sure you demo the apps for yourself and that they perform well. Call at least three references that have had similar projects developed. Work with a local company to ensure you can take legal action in the case of a dispute. If these three items check out, you’ll likely have a good experience.  Jay Belfore is the cofounder of Widely Interactive, an Airpark company that specializes in the building and marketing of mobile apps and websites. ABIS helps business clients make money, not just count it By Marjorie Rice

F

or David Turcotte, accounting is more than a numbers game. Turcotte, founder and senior partner of Accounting & Business Information Services, leverages business experience with CPA expertise to help his clients grow their companies. “When I first started my practice, in the depths of the recession of the ’90s, I had to look for a way to differentiate myself,” Turcotte says. “There were a lot of people doing taxes and preparing financial statements. At that time I made a very conscious decision to focus on small business managers’ bottom line—their profitability.” Standard-issue accountants may be experts in reporting money, but making cash isn’t often in their wheelhouse, and Turcotte was inspired by the possibilities. “I would look at troubled companies

50 | Scottsdale Airpark News January 2015

where there was a chance that I could help them turn the business around,” he says. And turn them he did, toward sustainable growth and profits. “That’s what got us where we are today.” Turcotte chose the Airpark because of opportunities to attract investment funding for land, buildings and construction. His high-net-worth tax and wealth management clients became his first real estate investors. General contractors and subcontractors and other business owners in the area also became ABIS clients. In those early years, Turcotte bought a small accounting practice in Mesa, where most of the clients were in the medical and dental field. After a few years he combined both practices in his Airpark location. Medical and dental customers still form an important segment of the ABIS client base.

“In 2008, when the world came to an end, we lost a lot of our general contractors,” Turcotte says. “The activity level is improving, so we’re working with more general contractors and focusing on rebuilding that portion of our practice.” From January to March, Turcotte helps business owners focus on planning. “It’s amazing how many small businesses don’t have a business plan as a way to function and measure their success in the coming year,” he says. “Business owners need to ask themselves, ‘What were our sales in the prior year, what should they be in the coming year and how do we plan for that?

Founder David Turcotte and associate Jeremy Bach are part of the ABIS team that serves individual and business clients from their Airpark offices. What kind of cash will we need to succeed? Do we need to strengthen our banking relationships, open a capital line of credit?’”

Technological Boost

Technology helps his nine-member team with planning and keeping in constant contact with clients. “We’re connected to all of our clients’ business accounting systems through the Internet, so we can oversee what is taking place at their facility,” Turcotte says. “I used to have to go out and visit our clients 20 years ago; now we can get right on their accounting system, identify any problems and help them.” One of Turcotte’s favorite apps to facilitate that process is Dropbox for Business (dropbox.com). ABIS clients are set up with their own boxes, which contain updated files accessible at any time. Turcotte also recommends some wellknown accounting software for his small business clients, including QuickBooks (quickbooks.com) and Sage 50 Accounting (formerly Peachtree Accounting, at go.na. sage.com). “These accounting programs have been around a long time, and they have been made more robust,” he says. “There is a lot that can be done through these with inventory management and job costing. Ten or 15 years ago, I would install an accounting system to do these things and it would cost customers $15,000 to $20,000. It can be done now for under $2,000. These are amazing programs. What you get is just unbelievable.” Personally, Turcotte loves the HP-12C Programmable Financial Calculator on his iPhone. “It’s dramatically better than what I used in school,” he says. “If I’m at lunch talking with somebody and he asks about interest payments, for example, we can get through that very quickly. This allows me to focus on how I can add value for my customers.” 

The surprising mosaic of Scottsdale's museums, past and present By Joan Fudala

F

rom mouse memorabilia to modern art, from bisons to Beatles in wax, Scottsdale museums have given residents and tourists a glimpse at some of the world’s most eclectic collections. With the opening this month of the Scottsdale Museum of the West, some of the best collections ever will soon be on view. So what have been some of Scottsdale’s museums and collection displays over the years? Take a stroll through these galleries, past and present: Scottsdale started as an unincorporated farming community, and from its founding in 1888 until the post-World War II business and tourism boom, the city didn’t have a museum, art gallery or permanent collection display. Residents were too busy working and making history to think about collecting it. Perhaps the area’s first museum of sorts was the Desert Botanical Garden,

52 | Scottsdale Airpark News January 2015

which opened in 1939 and celebrated its 75th anniversary during 2014. Long before BarrettJackson Auto Auction or the Penske Racing Museum opened, the Flynn brothers—Clifford and Mike—opened the Antique Auto Museum of Arizona on Scottsdale Road in downtown Scottsdale. Exhibiting their hobby of collecting antique cars, the Flynns’ museum had a Stutz Bearcat, a V-12 Packard and a Stanley Steamer. Wallace and Ladmo broadcast their popular kids’ television show from the site several times. The museum closed in the early 1960s. In January 1962, the Madame Tussauds of London-affiliated American Heritage Wax Museum opened on Stetson Drive, near the current location of Southbridge and the pedestrian walkway over

rememberwhen the Arizona Canal. Western-attired coeds led visitors through exhibits of historic American figures and popular culture icons. An exhibit of waxen Beatles in 1964 caused a near riot by fans. Part-time Scottsdale resident Dick Van Dyke visited the museum to see his image from “Mary Poppins.” The museum moved to Van Buren Street adjacent to Papago Park in 1971 and closed circa 1975. The wax museum was a popular school or scout field trip in the 1960s. During the 1960s a Western Indian War Museum operated for a few years in the Western Park Shopping Plaza at the northeast corner of Indian School Road and what is now Goldwater Boulevard.

The McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park opened in 1975, a living/ hands-on museum of railroading. Historic displays include the Roald Amundsen Pullman Car used by three U.S. presidents, a railroad museum housed inside a historic baggage car and Scottsdale old-timer Gabe Brooks’ 1940s-vintage machine shop. Arizona’s Merci Train boxcar is on display, with an exhibit explaining its significance. An entire building at the park is devoted to model trains and local model train clubs.

From 1971 to 2005, the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak roads was home to Rawhide Western Town.

Arizona Native American arts and crafts dealer Bill McGee opened McGee’s Indian Museum on Stetson Drive in December 1966; the building and distinctive clock tower still stand, but with entirely different tenants. The museum not only exhibited Navajo, Tewa, Pima, Hope and Yavapai arts and crafts, but had actual craftspeople onsite demonstrating their artistic skills. The museum closed in the 1970s. When the Scottsdale Civic Center Library opened in November 1968, it included an art gallery on the mezzanine level. Many of Scottsdale’s hometown artists with global renown exhibited there, from our first artist Marjorie Thomas, to husband/ wife artists Mathilde Schaefer Sheafer and Lew Davis. When the Scottsdale Center for the Arts opened in October 1975, it included gallery space in its lobby, which took the place of the library gallery for municipal-sponsored art shows. Although the renamed Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts now concentrates on performing arts, art exhibits have returned to the Civic Center Library’s gallery space on the first floor. Jim Paul opened Rawhide Western Town at the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak roads in 1971 to showcase his enormous collection of Western Americana artifacts and actual buildings. It attracted millions through October 2005, when Rawhide moved from Scottsdale to the Gila River Indian Community.

Formed in 1968 to save the Little Red Schoolhouse from destruction during an urban renewal project, the Scottsdale Historical Society also began collecting photos and artifacts of Scottsdale history, some of which were on display in its temporary homes at Loloma School, the Civic Center Library and the Scottsdale Financial Center. The society finally got to open the Scottsdale Historical Museum in 1991 in the schoolhouse it had saved decades earlier.

Heating up visitor markets with the warm weather campaign

illions of eyes will soon gaze onto the Valley of the Sun during Super Bowl XLIX. With ESPN broadcasting from Scottsdale Fashion Square during Fan Fest Scottsdale, our city will be in the national spotlight. Although, Scottsdale is no stranger to being in the limelight with annual world-class events such as the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction and Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. To capitalize on the national attention during the Super Bowl and Scottsdale’s events season, the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau is going above and beyond to share the message of Scottsdale’s sunshine and winter warmth with the launch of our annual warm winter weather campaign. From January through March, the “Warm Up in Scottsdale” campaign will target potential visitors who are suffering from the cold, dreary weather at home by reminding them of the sunshine in Scottsdale this winter. Our research has shown that New York, Chicago and Canada are some of our most important markets—not only bringing in masses of visitors, but also bringing visitors who spend a lot of money when they vacation. This research has enabled us to locate high-potential zip codes within our key markets that allows for more precise and targeted marketing efforts. Throughout the winter months, coldweather sufferers in those destinations will encounter Scottsdale messaging on their commutes to work, on the Weather Channel, in their airports, and on their

Facebook pages. They will be directed to WarmUpinScottsdale.com, which features “5 Great Ways to Warm Up this Winter” along with a contest to enter to win a trip for two to Scottsdale. As if that wasn’t enough, these potential visitors will see images of Scottsdale’s warm winter weather and world-class amenities while watching cable and broadcast TV, and flipping the pages of some of their favorite magazines, such as

Afar, National Geographic Traveler, Travel + Leisure, and Saveur. Last year’s efforts helped Scottsdale realize more visitors who were willing to pay higher rates at our hotels and resorts in order to take advantage of sitting by the sunshine instead of shoveling snow. With Super Bowl, our signature events, and the bureau’s warm weather campaign, we are anticipating a healthy 2015 peak season for Scottsdale’s tourism industry.  Rachel Sacco is the president and CEO of the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, which is responsible for marketing the Scottsdale area as a premier travel and meetings destination to national and international leisure visitors, travel agents, tour operators and meeting planners.

5 tips on renting your place for Super Bowl

he excitement of Super Bowl XLIX coming to Glendale on Feb. 1 is upon us and along with it the dollar signs of renting out your place to voracious fans By Errol Shifman, in search of a place to stay with money My Home Group to spend. Rents are advertised upwards of $3,000-$4,000 per week for a condominium. In order to make it a worthwhile experience both monetarily and for peace of mind here are some factors to consider to determine whether to rent or not. If you go for the cash do it safely … and legally. 1. Does the county or city where the property is located allow vacation rent-

als? Is there a homeowners association? If so, does the HOA allow short-term property rentals? In Scottsdale short-term stay rentals (fewer than 30 days), such as vacation rentals and bed and breakfast boutique hotels, are not allowed in single-family residential districts. (See www.scottsdaleaz.gov/codes/ zoning/sfruses.) But, multifamily zoning areas like condos are fair game. Check the zoning where your home is located. In Phoenix there is no explicit prohibition for short-term rentals. The definition of “residential purposes” in the zoning ordinance is one month or more. Some HOA CC&Rs talk about shortterm rentals, but check to see if it explicitly prohibits vacation or short-term rentals. 2. Will you have to have a business license or pay a business tax?

Both the codes of Phoenix and Scottsdale say that a person who has less than three residential units rented or available for rent in their cities does not have to pay a privilege “sales” tax. There is however a 5 percent transient lodging tax on any hotel, motel, apartment or individual charging for lodging space to any person for 29 days or less that may apply. Please contact your tax advisor to see if any of these taxes apply to you because the combined city, county and state privilege and transient taxes can add up to about 13 percent. (See Phoenix Code 14-445 and Scottsdale http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/taxes/tlfaqs.) 3. What about insurance? Your homeowners insurance will not cover damage by your tenants. It may cover some medical if one of the renters …continues on page 62

mpire Aviation Group, a leading provider of aircraft sales, management and charter services, has opened a new aircraft sales, acquisitions and brokerage office in the United States. The new sales office, located at Scottsdale Municipal Airport, will help the company access the world`s largest market for private aviation and business aircraft. North America accounts for more than 50 percent of global new business jet sales, and around 60 percent of the world`s general aviation fleet. Empire Aviation is focused on acquiring and reselling pre-owned business jets for buyers all over the world. The company has appointed Gary Wright, a veteran of the U.S. general aviation industry, to head its new U.S. sales operations. Empire Aviation’s ability to reach the four corners of the globe is an enormous asset for customers. In today’s global economy, it’s important to market your aircraft throughout the world and to have a sales team with the experience and knowledge to successfully close deals. Empire Aviation’s reach goes well beyond the borders of the United States, with well-established operations in Africa, India and the U.A.E. The market intelligence and research team at Empire Aviation is unrivaled in the industry. Having this knowledge assists Empire Aviation in attaining maximum value for customers while minimizing time on the market. When selling a multimillion-dollar piece of business equipment, it is essential to have a company behind you who understands the asset and will market it as such. “Every part of the global economic cycle creates opportunities in business aviation and espe-

cially in the U.S. because of its dominance,” said Gary Wright, director of Empire Aviation. “As well as the sheer size of the market, the United States aviation market is highly regulated, and this helps to provide buyers with further reassurance about their aircraft through the due diligence process, which we undertake pre-sale. As the majority of new aircraft sales in the U.S. are replacements for existing owners, we are set to see some very attractive acquisition opportunities and great value for buyers.” According to Empire Aviation Group, the price of a late model pre-owned business jet compared to new aircraft prices (which continue to rise) offers a substantial discount to buyers. Savings on pre-owned vs. new aircraft prices can run into the millions of dollars, which can be enough to cover operating costs for the owner for years. Pre-owned aircraft are also more readily available; with manufacturers currently running order backlogs, buyers of new aircraft may have to wait several years to take delivery. “Our new sales office is just the first step for Empire Aviation Group in the U.S.,” said Steve Hartley, executive director of Empire Aviation Group. “We have proven our aviation asset management business model and the U.S. is the next opportunity, after our 2012 launch in India. As the U.S. market for new business jets recovers, this creates opportunities in the pre-owned sector as corporations and individuals take delivery of their new aircraft and more aircraft come onto the preowned market. We plan to follow up this first step with the introduction of our full-service portfolio of aircraft management and aircraft charter.”

Some companies offer landlord insurance for vacation rental situations. 4. Should I do a background check? You need to know who will be in your home or rental unit. The safest way to find out is with a credit and criminal background check. In your application for the rental, it must state that the person is giving you permission to run such a check. The Arizona Association of Realtors has an “Application for Occupancy” available, and there are numerous websites to obtain a background check from or contact a private investigator. 5. Brighton Motorsports launches coffee event, lands Lotus franchise By Marjorie Rice

tep into Brighton Motorsports and you’re transported to a world fit for James Bond and other famed aficionados of sleek, swift motorcars that stop traffic with their elegant lines, roaring engines and burnished finishes. Honestly, who wouldn’t salivate at the sight of a meticulously renovated ’62 Austin Healey? The latest Lotus in luscious bronze tones? A spanking new ebony Morgan 3 Wheeler whose design hearkens back to pre-World War II days? Or a 1999 Morgan Roadster that would look right at home at Downton Abbey? (For just $75,000 it could be yours.) For owners Shane and Karen Mustoe, this is heaven. “I’ve always liked cars and motorcycles—anything with an engine,” Shane Mustoe says. “Karen did too. was hooked on sports cars from then.” As Shane got older he gravitated toward sports cars from the ’60s, buying one, fixing it up himself, then selling it to buy another that caught his eye. “I never did that for a living,” he says. “It was just a hobby and a passion.” What Shane Mustoe did to pay the bills was more mundane— drywall contracting. He became a partner in a company that grew to nearly 1,200 employees at the peak of the building boom, with offices in the Airpark, Tucson and Las Vegas. Meanwhile, he still was dabbling in sports cars, buying and restoring them. “I was running out of space at home to store them, so I rented a space in Tempe that had lifts and a paint booth, and before I knew it, I was hiring employees to restore my cars,” Mustoe says. “I decided to take a few restoration jobs for customers, then started selling a few cars, and it sort of transformed into a business.” Not one to spin his wheels, Mustoe was starting yet another business, manufacturing a laundry product he invented. “Basically, it’s a box that fits inside a wall to connect a dryer vent pipe to a flex pipe, so the dryer can be pushed all the way back to the wall,” he says. The company, Construction Solutions, manufactures and distributes the dryer box along with other building products. “It’s not very sexy,” Mustoe says, “but we have two employees selling about 10,000 products a month.” That business doesn’t require much of his time, which is just as well because classic car sales and service is a high-touch relationship business that eventually became Mustoe’s primary focus. While he kept Construction Solutions, Mustoe sold his partnership interest in the drywall company so he could concentrate on cars, opening Brighton Motorsports about seven years ago. He and Karen work together in the busi-

In addition to their Cars and Coffee meet-ups for customers the first Saturday of the month, the Mustoes are planning a pre-auction party for the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction. They’re also sponsors for the Arizona Concours d’Elegance (Jan. 11 at the Arizona Biltmore) and Concours on the Hills in Fountain Hills (Feb. 7). Then there’s the Brighton Classic Car Rally, Nov. 1 this year, which benefits the Sojourner Center. Their company, with nine employees, does more than sell cars. They also do repairs and detailing and sell insurance for the specialty vehicles. “We have four technicians,” Mustoe says. “They’re generally older than most dealers’ service employees because we need people who still know what carburetors, points and condensers are. Younger technicians don’t know about them because nowadays everything is fuel-injected and electronic ignitions. “Our guys have been in the industry long enough that they know the old stuff while they’ve kept current. They’re able to work on anything from a ’30s Ford all the way through to the new Lotus Evora.”

New Lotus Dealer

Brighton became the state’s sole Lotus dealer in December.

Only one model, the Evora, is legal for sale as a new car here because other Lotus models don’t meet U.S. crash standards. Lotus is making design changes to meet the standards and new models are expected this year, Mustoe says. It’s a similar situation with Morgans. The company’s 3 Wheeler is the only Morgan that’s legal for new sales in the United States. The company is planning design changes that will meet U.S. standards within three years, and Mustoe also expects to have more of their models to sell. “We’re going to start looking for a larger place in anticipation of that growth,” he says. You can bet it will be in the Airpark. “We live north of here, and I’ve officed here since 1996,” Mustoe says. “But it’s more than convenience. The Airpark is just fun. It’s like an industrial park and resort all at the same time. We just love the vibe. “Sometimes Karen and I will work late. When we leave, we look through the windows and see those beautiful cars in there and we just want to pinch ourselves, thinking, ‘Can you believe that this is our place and our cars that we get to be around and sell?’ “It’s a dream come true.”

id you know that two investors can average the same return over time, yet one can have nearly twice as much money at age 65 as the other? Advisors call this sequence-of-return risk, and it’s a retirement killer. 500 on the lowest (best) valuation day of each year for 25 years, while his hapless brother “Larry the Loser” bought the same $10,000 of the index on the highest (worst possible) day of each year. While one might assume a huge difference after 25 years, the annualized yield of Wally’s portfolio was only 1.2 percent per year higher than Larry’s, proof that time in, rather than timing the market leads to desirable results. What the firm who published this piece didn’t discuss, of course,

was the age of the investor, implying that all investors had a 25-year time horizon, and that as long as one just stayed in the market over time, all would be fine. (Tell that to someone who retired at the bottom of the markets in 2002, down 51 percent, or in 2009, down 57 percent.) More recently, there was another brokerage-firm sponsored study that measured the S&P 500 over the 60 years from 1950 through 2010. It said that $1 invested and left alone to reinvest grew to $52. financialfundamentals missed only the 10 Best Days in that 60-year investment lifetime, your original dollar merely grew to $27; nearly half as much. Their conclusion? “None of us knows when one of those 10-best days is going to occur, so rather than missing out on such gains while sitting on the sidelines, one should stay in over the long run so as to catch all of those best days.” No mention was made as to what missing the 10 worst days would do for that dollar in 60 years. (Actually, it would have grown to $127.) What so many of these misguided studies rarely address is the age of the investor and their stage of life. When one incurs massive losses in one’s portfolio has far more to do with a sustainable retirement than any other single factor. Per Investopedia: “It is not just long-term average returns that impact your financial wealth, but the timing of those returns. Two retirees with identical wealth can have entirely different financial outcomes, depending on when they start retirement. A retiree starting out

at the bottom of a bear market will have better investing success in retirement than another starting out at a market peak, even if the long-term averages are the same.” Another consequence of this to a recent retiree who is no longer contributing to his 401(k) from income, is that the ability to recover their losses after a big decline becomes greatly diminished, and the risk of outliving their assets will likely increase significantly. Guaranteeing a lifetime income from some of one’s financial assets can help mitigate sequence of returns risk. Finally, sequence of return risk is rarely discussed by advisors who make their living, not by acting as fiduciaries, but from an AUM (assets under management) trail commission so long as their clients remain fully invested. As regulators are now pointing out, this sometimes creates a conflict of interest between the retiree, who can no longer afford excessive risk on monies it’s taken them 40 years to save, and their advisor whose income is dependent upon their client remaining fully

invested in various market holdings. A March 2011 Financial Planning magazine article found that “advisors have a history of being significantly disconnected from their clients’ actual needs.” When clients were asked what their top concern was, 88.6 percent said “losing our wealth.” When advisors were asked the same question, only 15.4 percent believed “losing their wealth” was the most important concern of those clients, virtually the polar opposite of how clients view their needs. Perhaps it is time to discover whether sequence-of-return risk is likely to derail your retirement.  Thomas K. JANUARY Business Horoscope By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA The year 2014 did not end on a peaceful note. It’s time to restructure parts of our lives and our approach to business. Get ready for a list of new restrictions and principles that will be put into place in the next one to three years. Ask yourself, how will these affect me?

ARIES 3/21-4/19 Your patience will pay off this year. Expect a more active year ahead. Assert yourself the 1st9th and 20th-30th. Keep informed of new developments in your industry and the surrounding community. Consider it a must to attend any openings or promotional events. You get that break by midmonth. TAURUS 4/20-5/20 Last month’s lessons can be replaced with success stories in January. You need to prioritize! Interactions with others, whether personal or professional, seem more harmonious. You can reach agreements or arrange meetings around the second or third week. After that, a bit of a slowdown in business may occur, with more effort required until the 22nd. A mix of social activities with colleagues can strengthen ties. GEMINI 5/21-6/21 You start the year off with new responsibilities and commitments. Associations with other will be a constant form of learning. People or clients from your past professional life may reappear. Check your email frequently. Travel-related issues are likely later in the month. Great ideas and promotional matters are favored the second and third weeks. CANCER 6/22-7/22 You need to be more creative in your thinking. Circle the week of the 12th for inspiration and opportunities. Whatever is going on in your chart will be laying the groundwork for a new career or position. January highlights significant partnerships. LEO 7/23-8/22 Stars are still in your favor for the next six months. Concentrate on networking and selling your ideas. Pay attention to your appearance and demeanor. Do what makes

68 | Scottsdale Airpark News January 2015

you feel good, and good thngs will happen with some help from your friends and associates. The week of the 20th brings new encounters with the right people. VIRGO 8/23-9/22 Expect a new set of rules to influence your work area. You are the adaptable type and can adjust easily. In 2015, you have an increasingly adventurous attitude. This month can be a busy time, and work goals can be achieved with little pressure from others. Interacting and working together in a partnership is favored. You seal a deal by midmonth. LIBRA 9/23-10/23 In 2015, it’s easier for you to keep everybody in harmony. That heavy financial crunch of the last few years is no longer a great threat. Your $$ improves rapidly except for a brief period of paying off some past obligations. Circle the last half of January to focus more on networking, meeting with clients and creating a new game plan. The 20th-30th is an opportune time for presentations. SCORPIO 10/24-11/21 You enter 2015 free of past personal restrictions and obligations, and are wiser and more in control of your future. A change in your goals for the year ahead requires a change of attitude and discovery on your part. In order to advance, you’ll need to undergo a learning process of some sort. Keep abreast of new developments in the work world. SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21 Get ready for restrictions, assignments and exciting changes. You can learn a lot this year—about yourself, your profession, and others. Be a bit cautious in what you commit to this month (it may not be so easy to back out of).

A good question to ask yourself is what you committed to at the start of your career, as a similar challenge or change is occurring now. CAPRICORN 12/22-1/19 No need to complain this year, providing you keep up with the new normal of fresh restrictions. Be informed and prepared (like the scouts) so you can apply this to your work situation. Do some creative visioning. You are ready to move ahead with confidence on those ideas you have been storing in your mind for months. Now with a little help from your contacts, it can happen. AQUARIUS 1/20-2/18 Conflict on the job will work out to your advantage. Networking is January’s focus. The quality of your professional associations is brought to light and will be in effect the next six months. Be assertive and use that political savvy. Hold off until next month to make any job changes and do your due diligence. PISCES 2/19-3/20 Go after your goals this month with confidence. Keep that to-do list handy: you can put it into play by the week of the 12th. Arrange meetings or presentations the week of the 20th. Expect a favorable outcome to your offers by the end of the month. Tweak your creative senses and trust your own feelings! Utilize this favorable time: if you can think it, it can happen. 

Leaders honored at luncheon

C

ommunity leadership has a lot in common with football. Ray Anderson, Arizona State University’s athletic director and former NFL executive vice president of football operations, connected the dots and helped to honor community leaders at Scottsdale Leadership’s 15th annual Spirit of Community Leadership Awards luncheon, Dec. 12. Anderson’s philosophy is simple: Honor your people in a servant, leadership style, and they will honor you in return. His message was on point, because when it comes to community leadership, it’s all about the people. As Scottsdale Leadership continues its tradition of inspiring future leaders, the organization takes time to pay tribute to those who are walking the talk. It was a packed house at the annual event, where three individuals and one corporation were recognized for their contributions of significant time, energy and resources to improve

the Scottsdale community.

This year’s featured speaker is Flora Jessop, an advocate against child abuse in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At 16 years old, after years of abuse, she fled her family and her faith.
