Peoria girl is thriving thanks to heart transplant BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Brittany Johnson describes her 5-yearold daughter Daisy as sweet, sassy and fun. She loves doing puzzles, coloring, building with Lego and dancing. Most of all, she enjoys playing with her 7-year-old brother, Zev. Daisy is living a full life thanks to a heart transplant she had at 10 weeks old. The Peoria girl was born with an unbalanced atrioventricular canal defect, a congenital condition that occurs in two out of every 10,000 newborns. Brittany said doctors at Phoenix Children’s Hospital had to resort to a heart transplant when Daisy had a hard time recovering from a less-invasive surgery. “The doctors at Phoenix Children’s Hospital tried one in a series of three surgeries, but she had a hard time recovering,” Brittany said. “They thought a transplant was the best option.” Daisy is doing well, although winter is difficult for her because she takes immunosuppressive drugs meant to suppress transplant rejection. In December, Daisy competed in the first Arizona Transplant Games in Chandler, a state-level competition Team Arizona held to promote membership for its team in anticipation of the 2020 Donate Life Transplant Games this summer in New Jersey. “She had a blast,” Brittany said. “Last summer she competed in the national games in Salt Lake. We went up there and she competed in cornhole, the youth Olympiad and the 25-meter dash. “It was such a cool experience to be there with so many other recipients and donor families, recipients, donor families and living donors. It’s such a powerful experience.”

Brittany Johnson, left, found out her daughter Daisy had a heart defect before she was born. Now Daisy enjoys playing with her 7-year-old brother Zev and her father Matt, third from left. (Photo courtesy Brittany Johnson)

Brittany, and her husband Matt, found out about Daisy’s defect at Brittany’s 20week anatomy ultrasound. “My OB told me there was something wrong with the baby’s heart,” Brittany said. “She referred me to a pediatric cardiologist. Three weeks later, she was diagnosed with an unbalanced atrioventricular canal defect. “He watched her throughout my pregnancy and saw her once she was born. When we took her in for her one-month check-up, he noticed she was breathing hard.”

The pediatric cardiologist sent her for an X-ray that showed she had congestive heart failure. That’s what necessitated the surgery. “What helped was from the time she was diagnosed we always had a plan,” Brittany said. “While it was scary, we had a plan to treat her. It has definitely been hard. There wasn’t another choice and we had to do it for her. She’s been a fighter since day one. She’s really the one who keeps me fighting.”

To peel or not to peel: Which one is best?

BY SUMMIT WELLNESS AND WEIGHT LOSS CLINICS

Properly trained practitioners will say peeling is the most reliable dermatological treatments. Skin peeling requires skill and is safe only in the hands of experienced specialists. Not all formulas are created equal. It’s worth paying the price for knowledge and experience versus paying lower prices and potentially enduring facial damage. With the growing market of chemical peels, choices can become intimidating and overwhelming. Choosing the type of chemical peel to safely rejuvenate your skin is the first step. Superficial peels are most common and contain mild chemicals in low concentrations. Quite often these peels do not show the benefit versus cost-bene-

fit at $150 to $400 a session. Medium peels use stronger chemicals. The most common is TCA (trichloroacetic acid), which can be used on its own. It can be combined with glycolic acid or other solutions to achieve a more controlled, even peel. TCA also helps reduce unwanted side effects. Medium-depth peels should only be performed by trained professionals. In terms of deep peelings, the Elaine Brennan Skin Renewal Peeling System is a timely and unique light treatment and might be the most effective way to obtain healthy, beautiful and blemish-free skin. This peel can be applied to selecte areas of the body as well as the face, neck and eyelids (the only peel available for use on, and around eyes). The special technique achieves a rejuvena-

tion resulting in a dramatic improvement in elasticity, texture and color, as layers of dead skin cells are safely exfoliated and replaced with more supple, elastic and firmer skin - leaving a smoother texture and stable moisture balance. It addresses all skin problems, ages and is suitable for skins of all color. Learn more about the Elaine Brennan Skin Renewal Peeling System and Elaine Brennan Get-Glowing Micropeel by requesting a skin care consultation at Summit Wellness and Weight Loss Clinics (formerly Summit Medical Weight Loss) at 480-3064410.

Porcelain veneers can enhance patients’ smiles BY BURNS DENTISTRY

Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin - custom made to fit over teeth, providing a natural, attractive look. They can be used to fix chipped, stained, misaligned, worn down, uneven or abnormally spaced teeth. When it comes to veneers, it’s important to note it’s not a onesize-fits-all solution. Every patient is different. There are a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and smile designs that can come into play. It is the job of Burns Dentistry’s staff to take into account the patients’ personality, skin tone as well as eye and hair color. This is included in the waxup to see what things would look like in during the temporary phase. Adjustments and changes can be made. Clients should share any pertinent information with one of Burns Den-

“SUCCESSFUL AGING” Winning Strategies for Living Well and Loving Life

BY KAYE BAKER

Producer, Successful Aging

Dr. Theresa Ramsey, founder of Revitalize Functional Medicine, is a passionate advocate for living your best life at all ages. “As younger generations begin to age, we are becoming a society of people who do not accept a suboptimal quality of life,” Ramsey said. Her focus in her clinical practice is in lifestyle and preventative aging with Bioidentical Hormone Replacement. Hormones are produced in the body by endocrine glands and transported by the blood to our organs. “Topical hormones offer many benefits to your health but, in order to get the heart protection you need to take the oral dose,” Ramsey said. One hormone often overlooked because it is associated with vitamins is D3.

This hormone is crucial for bone health and keeping strong immune systems. Men’s and women’s optimum health is improved by taking testosterone as they age. There is strong evidence supporting this and both men and women report having more energy, a decrease in anxiety and the ability to maintain proper weight with monitored testosterone levels. Ramsey concluded with “replacing hormones is not just for quality of life enrichment; it is also for age-related disease prevention. When a battery runs out, the car stops moving or doesn’t start. Your choice is to push it home or replace the battery. Replacing hormones as we age is like replacing the battery in your car.” For more information contact Kaye Baker, producer, Successful Aging 623-847-3199.

Accidental addiction: It’s not your fault BY RELIEVE OUTPATIENT MEDICAL DETOX

“I never thought I would be sitting in the emergency room asking for opiates. How did I get here?” David was prescribed an opioid from his doctor after shoulder surgery. He had been on them for almost a year when suddenly his doctor told him this would be his last prescription and he must start tapering off on his own. Unfortunately, David was not able to taper on his own and felt terrible after taking the last pill. It was like he had the worst flu of his life. He was so sick he went to the local ER, only to discover he was in opioid withdrawal. This story is not uncommon. Unfortunately, after patients are cut off by their doctor, many people start purchasing (potentially deadly) pills from the street, and their physical dependence frequently turns into an addiction. So how do we prevent medically necessary prescriptions from turning into accidental addiction? At Relieve Outpatient Medical Detox, we provide a fast, safe, discreet and comfortable way to stop using opiates. Relieve is

the first of its kind, seven-day, outpatient opiate detox, allowing patients to detox with just one short office visit per day. We are not an overnight facility, nor are we a long-term suboxone maintenance program where we swap one dependency for another. Instead of a taper, our treatment uses specific detox medications, comfort medications to manage withdrawal symptoms, and IV therapy to heal the body. If you or a loved one are taking opiates but no longer need them to manage pain, we can help. There is no need to struggle through the side-effects of opiate use or terrible withdrawals. Please call us today for a free consultation and to learn how you can detox without disrupting your life. For more information, call 480-549-2220 or visit relievemedicalopioiddetox.com.

The leading lady of authentic aging

12

BY DANI VANCAMP

At age 42, CarolAnn Tutera felt she had the insides of a 92-year-old woman. She had all the classic signs of menopause. “I don’t know how I was putting one foot in front of the other,” she said. “I wasn’t burning weight.” That was until she tried bioidentical hormones. She got her life back. Tutera is now the co-founder and CEO of SottoPelle Therapy, an international company training medical providers on the product’s proprietary methodology of working with bioidentical hormones. As a medical entrepreneur, she won numerous awards and recognition for her ability to succeed in a male-dominated industry. She became the leading lady of “authentic aging” and someone who commands respect in the bioidentical hormone therapy field. She gained much of her success by mentoring and recognizing the talent in others. No success can be sustained if not led by someone who sees the value of people. “You need to be compassionate with your employees,” Tutera said. “You need a vision they follow, you need to be effective in communicating with them and you need an open-door policy with them.” This recognition in the value of people also extends to the patients and medical providers within the SottoPelle family.

Beginnings of SottoPelle Therapy SottoPelle Therapy was founded more than 20 years ago, as the dream of CarolAnn and her late husband, physician Dr. Gino Tutera. But it was her passion and persistence in the dayto-day operations that propelled the dream into a reality. “He learned about the pellets in 1992, in Rancho Mirage, California,” she said. “The doctor came up to him and said, ‘Help me put in a pellet.’ He said sure, but said, ‘What’s a pellet?’ “This was exactly what he was looking for—bioidentical products or hormones for women who had hysterectomies or are in the throes of menopause.” The pellet is the size of a grain of rice and it is slipped under the skin. She says it offers “tremendous relief” of menopause symptoms.

Health & Wellness

“The pellets offer a nice, steady stream of hormones,” Tutera said. “When it’s placed under the skin, the heart regulates it. At rest, everything’s great. Your blood isn’t rushing through you as much. But when you’re stressed, your blood goes faster. There’s a need for more hormones. Your body is taking exactly what it needs 24-7. The body’s a beautiful tool and we’re helping the body regulate and function.” A new patient consultation is $185, and the three to four office visits a year are $300 each. “For me, it’s a godsend,” Tutera said. “I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. “We’ve made it affordable for everybody. We could just charge a lot for the incredible process. But that isn’t us. Our goal is to help as many people as possible.” The people positively impacted by SottoPelle are diverse in age, gender, occupation and/or sexual orientation. SottoPelle helps people in a natural but medically-based therapeutic manner. The practice is focused not on just disbursing a quick fix, but also addresses all aspects of someone’s health, physical and mental well-being. The SottoPelle lifestyle is not just about the remedy, but about the partnerships it creates with patients in advocating for their health. Tutera has created an international community of medical providers and patients who support balanced living. This has proved challenging over the years as change and champions of change are often perceived as controversial. Tutera held steadfast in supporting the mission, determination and dedication to the only thing that matters—helping people. Common sense coupled with naturally-based bioidentical hormone replacement therapy delivered via a proven medically-based protocol elevated SottoPelle to success with its patients and as a corporate entity. Notably, Tutera led the charge in advancing the healthy and balanced approach to authentic aging. She supported many people via a plethora of charitable organizations for veterans and athletes impacted by traumatic brain injury.

Every day leader What sets Tutera apart as a leader and influencer is her dedication and

persistence. She encompasses all that most want to become and has done it by helping people every day change their lives. After her husband’s passing, she was faced with not only a new challenge of continuing his legacy and dream but defining a new one for herself. She is steadfast in her mission to promote, education and advocate not only for hormone therapy but the total integration of balance into our lifestyles. Mindfulness can be an effective brain hack BY FERNANDO ROMERO

Glendale Community College Psychology Faculty

Try to recall a time when emotions got the best of you. Perhaps you got impulsive, unfair or overindulgent. Now, think of a time when the problem was the opposite: rationalizing, acting distant or lacking empathy. Notice we get to those states without even realizing it. Why is this? One way to begin answering these questions is to realize our brains evolved by hardwiring automatic structures to avoid threats and seek rewards. However, the automatic nature of this system is what makes it so difficult to realize we might be making a mistake. Mindfulness can be an effective brain hack to help us realize delusional and maladaptive patterns. Mindfulness is the ability to use our attention to observe the present moment in a more open and objective way. If you brush your teeth or wash the dishes while observing your present experience in an open, nonjudgmental way, then, you are practicing mindfulness. If you take a deep breath and relax your body in the middle of a meeting to help you focus and center your attention, you are practicing mindfulness. These skills will enhance tastes as you eat, and colors as you observe a landscape.

Glendale Community College’s main campus offers Meditation Practice twice a week. (Photo courtesy Glendale Community College)

You might actually learn to be a better listener and a more empathetic and compassionate parent, partner or teacher. Would you like to increase your mindfulness? Meditation is one method of doing so. Meditation trains your attention and produces benefits that include: • Stress reduction. • Reduced rumination. • Increased working memory and focus. • Reduced emotional reactivity. • An overall sense of well-being.

Glendale Community College offers Meditation Practice to community members, students, staff and faculty from 1:30 to 1:50 p.m. Monday to Thursday on the main campus in the Center for Learning building, room 40.

Glendale Community College has two campuses serving the West Valley; main campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue, Glendale, and north campus at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road, Phoenix.

Seven easy tips to manage winter skin Winter 2020

Health & Wellness

BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

Cold weather can take a real toll on your skin. Dry skin can lead to discomfort and, if neglected, can affect your skin’s elasticity and trigger outbreaks of irritated skin. Help keep your skin feeling healthy and hydrated this winter with these tips: Drink water. Hydrating your body from the inside out plays an important role in keeping skin supple and soft. When you’re dehydrated, the body pulls water from any source it can, including your skin. A good rule of thumb is at least 8 cups of water a day. Hydrate with food. You can also boost your internal water reserves by eating foods rich in water, nutrients, vitamins and beneficial fats and oils. Fish, nuts and avocados all contain plenty of essential nutrients that help promote well-hydrated skin. Foods like cucumber, zucchini, lettuce and watermelon also naturally have a high concentration of water. Use body lotion. Your skin naturally loses moisture throughout the day

through evaporation, but you can help trap the hydration you add from bathing by adding a layer of quality lotion. An option like Remedy Dermatology Series Moisturizing Body Lotion contains a proprietary botanical blend of nutrients, emollients and antioxidants, including green tea, clove and safflower oleosomes. Its smooth, rich formula absorbs quickly, leaving skin feeling soft with no greasy or oily residue. Formulated by skin care experts, the lotion helps skin stay moisturized for up to 24 hours and is free of 80 of the most common allergens that contribute to rashes and skin sensitivity. Learn more at remedyderm.com. Protect skin. Exposure to harsh weather can quickly dry and chap your skin, so any time you’ll be outdoors, especially for extended periods of time, be sure to cover up exposed areas. Keep an extra set of gloves and a scarf in your vehicle so you’re prepared for unexpected time outdoors, whether from an accident or impromptu stop at a local park for some fresh air and exercise. Change out of wet clothes. Always

remove wet clothes as soon as possible. Not only do cold, wet clothes affect your body’s ability to regulate internal temperature, but they can also create friction, leading to uncomfortable and painful skin irritation. If getting wet is unavoidable, consider layering your clothing so you can shed wet outer layers quickly before they can soak through. Use a humidifier. The indoor climate becomes considerably drier in the winter months when the furnace runs regularly. Using a humidifier can help restore a level of humidity that’s better for your skin. Aim for humidity levels in the range of 35-50%; depending on your climate, you may need to err on the lower side of the scale to reduce condensation on windows.

Wear sunscreen. Winter sun rays are just as strong as summer rays, even if you don’t feel their heat quite as much. In fact, snow burns that result from sun reflecting off the snow can be even more dangerous than regular sunburns. Protect your skin from burning and drying out by using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 any time you venture outdoors.
