New year’s resolutions may literally save your life. I’m a thoracic surgeon at Cancer Treatment Centers of America Phoenix, treating patients with the deadliest cancer in the United States, lung cancer. Not even half of those diagnosed early — when the cancer is localized to the lungs — live for five more years. But very few lung cancers are caught early. Once it spreads, the five-year survival rate is only 5%. You can improve your odds right now by quitting smoking, which is linked to 90% of all lung cancers. This is why I encourage all smokers to make — and keep — a resolution to quit today. Even if you’ve been smoking for years, quitting will improve your health. Quitting immediately reduces your risk for 12 cancers, including mouth and throat, larynx, esophagus, stomach, bladder and leukemia. Quitting can increase your life expectancy by as much as a decade. It reduces your risk for cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and stroke. The health benefits of quitting begin immediately. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, your heart rate drops minutes after you quit. The nicotine level in your blood falls to zero after 24 hours. Within a few days, carbon monoxide levels in the blood are the same as those who do not smoke. Your risk of heart attack drops sharply within two years, and
your added risk of heart disease is cut in half after three to six years. Plus, quitting saves you money, because you’re no longer buying cigarettes and you qualify for lower health insurance costs. Quitting is hard. Nicotine is addictive. But we can do anything if we put our minds to it. Remember to keep in mind why we’re quitting. The healthier you are, the more time you’ll have to spend with your loved ones. If you have kids, they’re less likely to develop asthma when they’re not exposed to second-hand smoke. You don’t have to quit cold turkey. We have many ways to help you, including patches, gum and support programs. Your doctor can help provide guidance as well. If you have been smoking for many years, I urge you to schedule a cancer screening. It’s a quick procedure that involves a very low dose of radiation that will find any sus-

picious nodules in the lungs. The earlier treatment begins, the better your odds. If the screening finds nothing, you can wait a year for another one. One final request: Don’t turn to e-cigarettes. The Food and Drug Administration has found no e-cigarette to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit. Whether vaping is as dangerous as smoking is unsettled science. Vaping, however, coats the lungs with a mist of harmful chemicals, including formaldehyde, the weed-killer arolein, lung-damaging diacetyl and vitamin E, which has been linked to severe lung damage. A new year has begun, and it’s full of potential and possibilities. Make a resolution to kick the habit — and potentially add years to your life. During the last year, it has been challenging for everyone to stay engaged, socially connected and partake in meaningful programs. It’s been especially difficult for seniors, who can be vulnerable and isolated. The Area Agency on Aging has adapted to offer virtual versions of its Health Living classes, including GeriFit exercise classes and other behavior change courses like chronic disease self-management, living life with chronic pain and diabetes self-management. This February and March, the agency will virtually offer the Aging Mastery Program. Developed by the National Council on Aging, The Aging Mastery Program is a 10-week course that explores topics like fall prevention,

La Siena helps families tackle complex topics BY LA SIENA
Encouraging older adults to have honest and frank discussions about their well-being and future care needs is important. Communicating openly about retirement living choices and preferences with their loved ones and adult children can lead to well thought out decisions, rather than one made in time of crisis. According to Jonathan Burningham, executive director of La Siena, no matter how independent, vibrant and self-sufficient someone may be today, the question of “what if” lingers. Faced with changes in the possible care and socialization needs as well as housing maintenance and upkeep of a parent can take an emotional and physical toll on adult children. “With planning and the knowledge of all available resources, the family can find peace of mind,” Burningham said. “The subject may not be an easy one to broach, but we can help fam-
ilies tackle this complex subject, allowing folks to make better informed decisions.” Burningham suggested that previewing retirement communities virtually with family members can jumpstart difficult conversations about future needs. A “tour” of a community can provide family members with tremendous insight into a senior’s preferences. It can also educate the family about the various housing and available care options. La Siena, for example, offers vibrant independent living and licensed and accredited assisted living. It’s accredited for three years through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and that parallels a five-star rating in the hospitality industry. Here, independent seniors can partake in maintenance-free living and safeguards with delicious dining options and touch-free activities in which to engage. The residenc-

Benevilla recognizes caring for the needs of older adults reaches beyond the individual to the entire family. Not only do their services help older adult clients, but many programs address the ongoing needs of caregivers and families. Several of these programs rely on the dedication and selfless support of volunteers. Offering free essential home services for older adults needing extra help in maintaining their independence at home is one such program. Enter Tom and Rhonda Hansch. The couple started as volunteers with Benevilla in January 2019. Tom has served over 400 hours as an assistant facilities maintenance specialist. His tireless efforts have saved Benevilla thousands of dollars. Tom helped upgrade the lighting systems on the main campus to LED among many other projects. He was the recipient of the Benevilla Muriel Rose Volunteer of the Trimester award last year. Rhonda has served more than 225 hours in our Home Services department, offering grocery shopping and assisted transportation to doctor appointments as well as assisting her husband with maintenance projects. her specifically. Rhonda also helped support Benevilla by participating in a photoshoot for our programs. Like many nonprofits during the coronavirus pandemic, Benevilla has had many volunteers step back to reduce their public exposure in these trying times. However, Tom and Rhonda and the core of our volunteer team never skipped a beat and have continued to provide free crucial services to our community of neighbors in need. In just the last 30 days, Benevilla volunteers have completed 150 grocery shopping and delivery trips - not just grocery pick up but actual shopping for those in need. They have also supplied assisted transportation for 125 round trips for seniors to essential medical appointments as well as 20 emergency errands. This all adds up to over 300 acts of service and 335 volunteer hours by this small but mighty volunteer work force. These services help ease the burden on family members caring for loved ones and ensure older adults with no family support are not left isolated and alone. For more information on Benevilla Home Services or Volunteer Opportunities, call 623-584-4999 or visit benevilla.org.

Taxes lower in retirement? Think again BY MICHAEL OXFORD

The expectation of lower tax costs in retirement could be fiction. One common thread between successful savers who have accumulated most of their saving in retirement accounts is to have eliminated all family debt by the time required minimum distributions begin. It’s now age 72. For the family who has little to no debt, the actual income needed to support their lifestyle during retirement may be modest compared to the total taxable income they could receive. When high-income earners enter retirement, they often experience income tax rates equal to or greater than their accumulating (working) years. This could be a surprise for some, who have heard that accruing their savings in retirement plans was the way to go. With the prospect of higher income taxes in the future, a comprehensive review of your tax-efficient strategies now might save you for years to come. At Oxford Retirement, we can help analyze your exposure by running a report generated from your tax return that may identify strategies that could reduce current or future income tax liabilities for you and/or your heirs. This report may illustrate very clearly how
some of these strategies might benefit your family throughout retirement. Having all the income you desire in retirement is important but having more income than you need may help create a substantial increase in taxes on money you did not even require the use of. This is very common for many successful retirees who may have oversaved in retirement accounts. Strategic retirement alternatives offer potential options to rein in over-taxation. Oxford Retirement can help you trim down your retirement tax liability so you pay only your fair share. Call and schedule a complimentary report at 623-933-9508. Financial wellness can impact overall wellness
BY ARIEL CLIFTON
Certified Financial Educator Coordinator of the Glendale Community College “Money Talks” program
Consider financial wellness as part of your overall wellness. After all, a lack of financial wellness can add stress and impact relationships, health and happiness. Wondering where to start? Consider your own feelings and upbringing around money. If you made mistakes in the past (and who hasn’t?) you may feel regret and want to avoid money for fear of making more mistakes — but avoiding money is the biggest mistake of all. Embrace managing your money as a form of self-care. Take care of your money so that later, it can take care of you. Start an emergency fund if you don’t already have one. This will help reduce stress from life’s surprises. While three to six months is recommended, start with a smaller goal of $500 and keep adding to it.
Remember that we don’t save by spending. Advertisers love to convince us that we’re saving money through their sales and offers, but you’re not saving when spending needlessly. Pinching pennies is important, especially on a tight budget. There’s still a need to actually stash cash. An easy way to save is to set up an automatic payroll deduction, the sooner the better. It is better to do this as a percent of your income rather than a flat amount. Think that you can’t afford to save? Track your expenses for a week or more and you’ll see where you can adjust. Find a money magazine, blog, or podcast that you can learn from in small bites. Americasaves.org is a great source for ideas. Talk with your family about money—especially your spouse and kids. You don’t have to be perfect to start a money conversation. Let your “mess” be your message and help each other to embrace financial wellness.
Last but not least, if you’re one of the many who are struggling right now, seek out resources and be gentle with yourself. Keep these ideas and implement them as you can and don’t beat yourself up for what you can’t do now or didn’t do in the past. Glendale Community College has a program called “Money Talks” that was created for students as well as faculty and staff to help people see money as a tool to empower their lives and create better opportunities for themselves and Glendale Community College assists students in achieving academic and personal goals. For the first time, there are more people older than 64 than under the age of 5. In the United States, baby boomers will all have turned 65 by the year 2030, which marks a significant transition in this country and the beginning of that age pyramid tipping point. As the population ages, the need for hiring caring individuals who can assist seniors as they age also increases significantly. The role of a professional caregiver is in great demand and is essential for clients requiring care. Home Instead is constantly adding talent to its caregiving team. Being a professional caregiver does not require special credentials or licenses. Home Instead conducts its own in-person classroom training. Its world-class CAREGiver training program equips students to confidently step into a client’s home and deliver the precise care needed. This initial training is supplemented with access to online learning and additional classroom courses at the office. Most importantly, Home Instead is looking for people with a caring heart and a desire to help others. Krystal Coy is the office and recruit-
ing coordinator for the Home Instead office serving Peoria and Sun City. “The skills of a caregiver can be trained, so we also are looking for individuals who can share their heart and bring compassion to the lives of the seniors we serve,” Coy said. From assisting with personal care and preparing meals, to running errands and providing companionship, CAREGivers help seniors with simple tasks that enable them to remain in their homes. The role is ideal for individuals seeking long-term job stability with a flexible schedule and supportive environment as well as continued opportunities for career growth. Caregiving during the pandemic has expanded the role’s requirements. Caregivers are required to wear masks and follow standard precautions, as well as check in as healthy prior to each shift. Home Instead is beginning the process to hire caregivers who are willing to care for those with COVID-19. Those interested in learning more about the role of being a professional caregiver and/or helping to provide care for seniors with COVID-19 are asked to call Coy at 623-499-3290 or apply at homeinstead.com/817.
