tanding in a white bucket hoisted 50 feet in the air, Anthony Ghilardi can’t help but take in the view. Power lines, which conduct enough voltage to kill a person 100 times over, sit less than 6 feet away from, preventing him from enjoying the sunset for too long. “You just get a different perspective on the city and different parts of the city,” said Ghilardi, an electric distribution mechanic with Pasadena Water and Power. “Usually, you go up, and you’re focused on what you’re working on and you’re not looking around (but) it’ll catch your eye and you’ll notice.” “But, sometimes when we’re not working on the high voltage and you’re waiting on someone to send up a new battery or drill, you get a second to look around. … You kind of forget that you’re even up there.” Now more than ever, the work of Ghilardi and the rest of the employees at PWP have never been more critical. With over 140,000 residents in Pasadena, many of whom are working from home, many depend on the utility company to keep the lights on just to keep their lives going. Without power, there is no internet. No internet means there is no school, no work, no life. “To me, it’s just as important or almost as important as the fire department or the police department,” said Brian Dease, a power distribution section supervisor at PWP. “We keep things civil.” Even though their work may go unnoticed at times, Dease figures it means he and his employees are doing a good job. “I’ve actually had customers say to me, we have never had this happen in the last 25 years,” he said. “The first thing that I say is that obviously, we’re doing a good job. If you’ve gone for such a long period of time without losing electricity that means we’re doing something right.” More than just a flip of a switch Turning on the lights or more importantly, keeping the lights on, is more difficult than simply flipping a switch. “I don’t think (residents) necessarily understand what it actually takes to keep the city’s power on,” said lineman Courtney Kent. “It’s not necessarily a negative thing. It’s a kind of knowledge that comes with the trade.” Power is provided throughout the city either high up in the air through overhead power lines or by underground circuits. Most often, people will see linemen fixing wires while hanging from electric poles. The bulk of power lines transferring power to

nearby homes and businesses stand at about 35 to 40 feet tall and hold miles-worth of wires that conduct anywhere from 120 volts to 17,000 volts. To work on these, lineman strap on special climbing spikes, called gaffs, that help secure them into the wooden poles or jump into a bucket and raise themselves to the wires. Most of the equipment they have is to either strap them down or keep them up. Then you get into the tools that allow them to safely work on charged wires, such as tight-fit wrenches and special cable cutters. However, a majority of the city’s power, about 60%, goes through underground electric conduits, hidden under manholes and in vaults. To the untrained eye, these vaults can be mistaken for sewer drains. The vaults range in size, but most are about the size of a garden shed except about 10 to 20 feet below ground and safeguarded by concrete enclosure. “It could get a little eerie going down in a vault,” said Jose De La O, a PWP electric supervisor. In addition to the deafening sound of the machinery constantly operating in these vaults, temperatures can rise to 120 to 150 degrees depending on how hot it is above. In rare cases, the vaults have installed lights, however, most of the time the vaults are pitch black. A splicer, an underground lineman, relies on either their headlamp strapped to their hardhat with black electrical tape or portable lights hooked up to a generator. “Depends on the time of day,” said Dease. “You could get away with just a flashlight, but when you’re going to be down there for an extended period of time, we use drop lights.” Whether it’s descending into a pitch-black hole or climbing a 30foot pole, it takes a special mindset to work on live wires. “I’d say you have to enjoy climbing poles (and) working in confined spaces,” said Dease. “You have to be a little bit fearless to do the job. … Sometimes you’re doing stuff that’s not necessarily what normal people would do.” It’s a bit eerie High-voltage wires carry large amounts of electrical energy, which means they also carry inherent dangers. According to AdvisorSmith, using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, being a lineman ranks as the 10th most dangerous job in the country. In the study, a total of 29 linemen died in 2018 with the most 02.04.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 3

common cause of death being electrocution. “It’s a hazardous job. It’s inherently dangerous,” Dease said. “Something could fail or you could make a simple mistake if you’re not thinking correctly or if your mind is not where it should be. You can hurt somebody or yourself, if not kill someone.” One of the more dangerous parts of the job is going underground during a troubleshooting job. Unlike troubleshooting on poles where the damage is visible, linemen typically don’t know what is wrong until they get off the last rung of the ladder as they descend into the vault. “When you’re working on overhead lines … nine times out of 10 you could see the problem from the ground,” Dease said. For De La O, going into a vault during troubleshooting is one of the scarier situations for him. “Something could go wrong,” he said. “You have multiple other circuits in there that are still energized. You don’t know if whatever explosion happened … might have affected those.” The most recent death of linemen on the job was in 1990 when three men died after an underground electrical vault exploded. In their honor, PWP built a memorial at their facility. “You have to be trained, you have to know what you’re doing,” said Dease. “This is not something we mess with.” The family tree The life of a lineman means long hours spent with your team. Similar to firefighters, PWP has linemen on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, just in case an emergency happens. “I would say it’s close to a brotherly relationship at times,” said Kent. “You spend more time, sometimes, with the guys you work with than you do your own family.” “You bond over meals,” Dease added. “Or you might be on standby, just talking. You spend so many hours together.” In this time, they develop these tight bonds creating a second family. Meaning that even when they aren’t working on wires, they spend time together with meals after work or camping trips on days off. In the lobby of his office, Dease has a metal family tree with each employee’s name etched into a leaf. Only one is painted gold. “I have a family tree for my group in the lobby of our building and everybody has a leaf on it. When a person leaves, we take the leaf down and give it to them,” Dease said. One leaf stood out, it was painted a different color. “Marco’s we painted gold and it will always stay up there.” Marco Malfitano spent 18 years working for PWP before he was the first city employee to pass away from complications of COVID-19. Dease described Malfitano as an “indispensable employee” but also as a close friend. Malfitano’s death shocked everyone at PWP. “I’ve never seen a bunch of grown men cry for someone else,” said Dease, a close friend of Malfitano’s, as he held back tears. “Anytime I or anyone else called on Marco, he was there with a smile on his face to lend a hand, share his vast knowledge or give sound advice. Anyone that knew Marco knew he was a model to us all and what a great employee, father and husband he was. Usually, people are sad, but a significant number of people came into my office, even people who barely knew him. … I don’t know. It’s part of the pandemic I guess.” Amid a pandemic and even after one of their own dies, the men still have to maintain the city’s power grid. “When the pandemic first started a lot of people started working from home,” Dease said. “That’s just not an option for us.” n — Staff reporter Matthew Rodriguez can be reached at mrodriguez@timespublications.com

PASADENA CITY COUNCIL BRIEFS

Reported cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of Feb. 1

South Pasadena: 1,180; Alhambra: 6,208; Altadena: 2,905; Arcadia: 2,375; Glendale: 16,748; Monrovia: 2,853; San Gabriel: 2,845 Total confirmed cases in Pasadena: 9,776 Total deaths in Pasadena: 226 Total confirmed cases in LA County: 1,073,111 Total deaths in LA County: 15,260 • COVID-19 cases continue to fall in Pasadena as the city reported a seven-day average of 62.3. For context, at the peak of the surge, the city reported 179.1 seven-day average cases per week. While it is about a 64% drop in caseload it is still higher than it was before the current surge. On Dec. 4, the beginning of the surge, the city reported a 53.4 average. Hospitalizations continue to decrease. Huntington Hospital reported 149 COVID patients, 27 of whom are in the ICU. While the caseload declines, the city reported its deadliest week of the pandemic as 39 people died. January has been the deadliest month of the pandemic with 84 deaths. • As the city experiences a decline in cases, officials emphasized restraint to avoid another surge. “It’s still dangerous to lower your guard,” said Public Health Director Dr. Ying-Ying Go. In anticipation of Super Bowl Sunday, the Pasadena Public Health Department banned restaurants from turning on TVs in their outdoor dining areas. Los Angeles County Public Health department instituted a similar order. Officials believe the national event may lead to another super spreader event. • Pasadena Unified School District hosted its first COVID-19 vaccination clinic open to the media. PUSD had two clinics two weeks ago where they vaccinated more than 100 employees, but it was closed to the media. At the clinic hosted Jan. 28, PUSD had a goal of vaccinating 50 employees aged 65 and older. According to spokeswoman Hilda Ramirez-Horvath PUSD is the first school district to begin vaccinations. PUSD hopes to vaccinate all of its 2,400 employees. The first person vaccinated on Thursday, was Lorna Washington, lead researcher at Willard Elementary. — Information compiled by Matthew Rodriguez

he Pasadena City Council passed a budget amendment allowing the city to purchase more affordable housing options. Without discussion, the city decided to appropriate $607,500 to purchase two units from Heritage Housing Partners. One unit is a three-bedroom unit deed-restricted at the moderate-income level off East Orange Grove Boulevard. The other is a one-bedroom deed-restricted at the low-income level off North Fair Oaks Avenue.

very year, the city manager’s office coordinates with the city’s state and federal lobbyists to advocate for laws that may impact the city the following year. The city works with several different organizations to advocate for laws on the federal and state level and to alert the city of new laws in both federal and state legislatures. Some of the items the city hopes to tackle housing with its platform and COVID-19 relief legislation. In the past, Pasadena did not qualify for direct local aid as it fell under the population threshold needed. The city’s platform hopes to advocate for direct assistance to all cities regardless of population size. n

fter 2020, everyone could use some love. Nearly a year after coronavirus cases began emerging in the United States, the country is still continuing to recover. Businesses in California are opening after Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted December’s stay-at-home order recently. To celebrate, One Colorado in Pasadena is hosting its first “lock your love” contest.” The Valentine’s Day-themed competition features an interactive “love wall” at One Colorado. The idea was inspired by the typically European concept of “love locks,” which are essentially padlocks couples secure onto bridges, fences and gates. The love wall is designed with this sentiment in mind and contains a grid where couples are invited to place a heart-shaped lock of their own. The locks will be provided as a gift with purchase at several of One Colorado’s stores and restaurants. Couples can also enter for a chance to win a bouquet from Twigzz floral shop, and a romantic dinner at Il Fornaio Italian restaurant. To enter, couples must take a photo of their lock on the wall and post it to Facebook or Instagram with #PasadenaLove. Rishika Mahtani, the regional marketing manager for ShopCore Properties, which owns and operates One Colorado, said the creation of the love wall was a manifestation of her team’s wishes to spread positivity in the community. “At the end of last year, we were brainstorming as a group what we wanted to do for our first event in 2021. The consensus was that we wanted to send a message of love and hope and really just bring the community together,” Mahtani said. The “lock your love” event is also meant to stimulate business for the shops and restaurants in the district, especially those that are locally owned. “We really hope that this drives people to One Colorado,” Mahtani said. “Many of the businesses are Pasadena owned, and we really just want to bring everyone back with a bang. It’s really important right now.” Participating stores include Anthropologie, J. Crew, Finn + Willow, Il Fornaio, Sushi Roku, Sage Vegan Bistro & Brewery, Twigzz, Vince, Nike, Salt & Straw, MAC, Place Vendome, Sephora and Patagonia. To operate during the pandemic, One Colorado and its businesses must practice social distancing procedures, which, Mahtani says, ShopCore and One Colorado take very seriously. “We want to make everyone feel that this is a safe space where they can get some relief from everything going on.” The event is set to go until Feb. 13, and contest winners will be announced on Feb. 15 via One Colorado’s Facebook and Instagram pages. The winner will also be contacted through social media. Mahtani said One Colorado and all of ShopCore wants to make sure this event is one that people will find cathartic after an unexpectedly hard year. “With the rough year everyone had in 2020, we just wanted to bring some light to people,” Mahtani said. “We want people to really feel that we are a part of the community and that we are there to bring everyone together.” n — Staff reporter Claire Spinner can be reached at cspinner@ timespublications.com 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.04.21

ne of three Super Bowl honorary captains, LA resident Trimaine Davis doesn’t feel worthy when so many fellow educators are trying their best to make it through the pandemic. “I’m ecstatic and emotional,” he said. “I feel so thankful for the opportunity, but it’s a bit overwhelming. I work with so many educators who have supported me. I do my best to honor them in the work I do every day. I’m going to do my best to represent them and make them proud come Super Bowl Sunday.” Davis will step on the field with nurse manager Suzie Dorner and veteran James Martin for the official on-field coin toss ceremony. Trimaine Davis with his daughter, Before the honorary captains are recognized Faye, and his wife, Ashlie. on-field, Presidential Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman will recite an original poem about these three individuals in recognition of their tremendous impact during an unprecedented year. The recitation of the poem will air nationally on CBS and be featured in-stadium. According to the NFL, the three captains were chosen because of their dedication and selfless commitment to helping others. “We are honored to recognize these three individuals who represent the best in all of us,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “During this incredibly challenging time in our lives, Trimaine, Suzie, and James have exemplified the essence of leadership, each in their own way. We are grateful for their commitment and proud to share their stories and recognize them during this special moment on Super Bowl Sunday.” Serving the LA and Pasadena communities as the retention coordinator for the UCLA VIPS Program, Davis provides critical support in coordinating all diversity events and ongoing activities related to the recruitment and enrollment of transfer and first-year prospective, diverse students. “I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with a dynamic program,” he said. “There are a lot of outreach programs that do not see students from high school all the way through college. We stay with our students, even if they want an advanced degree.” Amid the pandemic, Davis made it a priority to ensure his students and members of their households had devices and internet access to help bridge the digital divide. Not only did Davis secure hotspots, laptops and tablets for his students, but he hosted tech workshops for families to learn how to make use of the devices. Throughout his career, Davis has prioritized the academic success of Black students through his work with organizations like the CSU Northridge Black Male Initiative, San Diego State’s Student African American Brotherhood and Afrikan Student Union. While at San Diego State University, Davis advised the Student African American Brotherhood, Afrikan Student Union, and consulted as an education specialist for holistic identity development for Black Student-Athletes. While working at CSU Northridge, Davis served on the committee that launched CSUN’s Black Male Initiative, which ranks as one of the nation’s best support programs for African American students. For his research on issues related to Black academic achievement, Davis has been featured on panels and has presented at conferences including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE), College Board, Cal-SOAP, Urban League, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). A Pittsburg, California, native, Davis is a longtime football fan, who played Pop Warner Football from the sixth through eighth grades, before playing in high school. “Then a growth spurt hit, and I transferred over to basketball,” said Davis, who is a Warriors and 49ers fan. “There are so many life lessons from football, so many tangible lessons from working together and sacrificing for the greater good.” Being on the basketball court at San Diego State University gave him a glimpse at being in the spotlight. But nothing compares to the stage he’s taking at the Super Bowl. “I have a lot of jitters being out there on the field,” he said. “I’m just going to do my best and take a deep breath.” n — Executive Editor Christina Fuoco-Karasinski can be reached at christina@timespublications.com

• DINING • Fair Foodie Fest hits Rose Bowl Stadium BY ANNIKA TOMLIN

C

orn dogs, turkey legs and other fan-favorite fair food will be available every weekend in February at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Fair Foodie Fest is hosting its next free drive-thru event starting at 5 p.m. Friday, February 5. The event will be open 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays and noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays but closed Sunday, Feb. 7, for the Super Bowl. “Basically, what it is, it is the greatest hits of all of the fair food, your corn dogs, your turkey legs, your roasted corn to the deep-fried Oreos, the Krispy Kreme cheeseburger, the pineapple, the curly fries and the big sausage,” said owner of Fair Foodie Fest Brett Enright. “We said, ‘What are the top 20 foods that everybody loves at the County Fair?’ and then we lined up these vans that are about 200 feet apart from each other and it’s a COVID safe drive-thru event.” Enright explained that the event is similar to going to an In-N-Out Burger or Chick-fil-A drive-thru; “pull up in your car and the young lady or boy comes out with a tablet, they take your order, slide in your credit card, pull up a little bit more and then your food comes out and then you take it and drive on.” Fair Foodie Fest debuted in December at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim where the event “sold out every night,” according to Enright. “We’ve had it sold out ever since we started — it’s been that successful,” Enright said. He said the rides and entertainment at fairs are “always great but it’s been about the food experience where the growth has happened.” “In the last 10 years (people ask us), ‘What’s new with the fair? What’s the new deep-fried food at the fair this year?’” Enright said. “The food has become the star of the show for fairs and events around Southern California and around the United States.” Some of the food items available include Mexican curly fries with jalapenos ($15), Krispy Kreme donut cheeseburger ($12) and a new barbecue zone featuring a barbecue rib dinner with waffle fries and coleslaw ($20) and barbecue pulled pork sandwiches ($15). Also making its debut in 2021 is the mouthwatering Hawaiian chicken teriyaki pineapple bowls made from an entire half pineapple ($20). “I started my business Juicys when I was 15 years old and we’ve been (creating the food experience) at all the fairs in Southern California and around the United States ever since,” Enright said. “We serve about a million customers in Southern California when the fairs are going, (serving) our famous corn dogs, famous turkey legs and curly fires.” The Fair Foodie Fest strives at being a safe, no-contact drive-thru experience. Only credit and debit cards will be accepted, no cash. Masks are to be worn when ordering and whenever able. Due to new restrictions, the venue will no longer allow customers to park and eat at the venue. The venue includes three lanes to ease the flow of traffic. The left two lanes are for ordering food while the right lane is for passing. A map is available on the Fair Foodie Fest website that shows where each food and drink item will be located on the route. Although admission to the event is free, preregistration is recommended and getting a ticket online gets customers a free mini powdered sugar funnel cake, limit one per car while supplies last. Tickets are available at fairfoodiefest.com or eventbrite.com. “This is for people who have nothing to do right now for them to come out, enjoy the drive-thru, get a funnel cake and drive out,” Enright said. n

Funnel cake is available for $11.
