GRATEFUL CATHOLIC I could not let the letter in the Pasadena Weekly (“Eyes Wide Open,” Letters, Jan. 17) go unanswered. I am a product of the Catholic “propaganda system,” and unlike Miguel Espinosa, Jr., I am grateful for an open mind that my education in a Catholic school gave me, along with the ability to read and write, which the “abused sisters” taught me. (Miguel, who taught you to read and write?) They also taught me a moral code that may seem out of date by today’s standards, but gave me much peace of mind, and sense of self and direction. What institutions can you name, which have lasted 2,000-plus years and whose story is dotted with saints and sinners in every age through the history of the Church through the millennia? We cannot even begin to talk about the 200-plus year history of the contributions made by the Church in this country. (According to Espinosa’s letter, nothing good ever came from the Catholic Church.) As I grow older I have nothing but gratitude for my education and for being “indoctrinated” in our Christian, Catholic way of life, spiritually and morally. I have been a member of the Sisters of the Holy Cross for 60-plus years, and have taught in three of the 50 states, plus two years in Ghana, and have never had a priest come to our convent bedrooms in his spare time. The Church is going through trying times in our generation, as it has in the past. Always, after crises and tragedy, growth and transformation have followed. The Church is suffering now because of some of its members, and it is a tragedy of the first order. Jesus says it best — “better a millstone tied around a neck.” Lawsuits

will bring bankruptcy for some dioceses but “the Mafia” will not bail them out. The Church does best when not depending on material gains, but on the spiritual growth of its people. I am grateful for the years of community, service and love I have experienced in the faith of our ancestors. I hope I have made a contribution to continuing the Catholic legacy of the apostles, who were entrusted by Christ/God to the Church. Amen. - DOLORES BRAY, CSC VIA EMAIL

CAN WE AGREE? Continuing the shutdown of our federal government was exactly what Vladimir Putin would have had Donald Trump do for Russia. Enough is enough. Republican senators must stand up for America. … Putin’s desire is to impede our democracy. We can resolve our differences while keeping our government working. Even if we don’t agree on what the president is doing, we can agree that Russian corruption has resulted in the criminal guilt of Trump appointees Manafort, Flynn and Cohen; that Putin celebrated

Trump’s withdrawal of the US from Syria; that Putin eagerly awaits Trump’s withdrawal from NATO; that last year in Helsinki Putin was delighted that Trump caved in to him by denying US intelligence evidence that Russia interfered in the 2016 election; and that the Russians are holding American Marine Paul Whelan as a hostage exchange for convicted Russian spy Maria Butina. Can we agree that (a government shutdown) is exactly what Putin wants? - WALT DUNLOP VIA EMAIL

Re: “Pasadena’s Tale of Two Cities,” Jan. 24 Do the “facts” used by the authors actually support their argument? Does any of it really add up to the conclusion they draw? And what of that conclusion? Pasadena would be a much more equitable city if everyone who lives here made the same amount of money? Such as people living in Bradbury or San Marino? I understand Pasadena to be a community that values diversity. IN THE NAME OF LOVE

BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENT HONORS LEADERS IN THE STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM

I

love that Valentine’s Day and Black History Month are both in February. It’s a good time to reflect on love in general and gives me hope that beyond love for our special someone, we might also fi nd love for our fellow man. Love is all encompassing and recognizes the importance of others. If anyone had predicted prior to 1991 that four LAPD officers would violently beat an unarmed black man, be caught on videotape, and still be found “not guilty,” I would never have believed it. Much less would I have believed that years later it would become a regular occurrence for police to murder young African Americans, or that many of our youth would end up in prison for crimes they did not commit. It is unfortunate that those occurrences are mow more prevalent than recognition for the major contributions that African Americans have made to the world. And there have been many. That is why it so important to teach black history to young people; that they become aware of the inventors, the activists, the architects, the scientists, the teachers, the writers, the artists ... Aware of the love of those who have come before them, many giving up their lives in hopes of the world becoming a better place. Because of those heroes of the past, we now have role models like Patrisse Khan Cullors, LeBron James, Stacey Abrams, KRS-One, Kamala Harris, Colin Kaepernick, Maxine Waters and Barack and Michelle Obama, among countless others. We have people like Donzaleigh Abernathy, author and daughter of the Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, who continues to carry on her father’s work today. “I speak and teach about Martin Luther King Jr., my father, Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, and the American civil rights movement to keep the dream of freedom, liberty, justice and equality for everyone alive in America forever.” This is a woman who truly walks her talk. I met Donzaleigh Abernathy at a Latinothemed event at Cal State, Channel Islands. Farm workers and their families had been bused in to attend. She greeted each of them as they arrived. That is love. We have artist Rudy Cole, who in his art shines light on lesser known African Americans, such as renowned architect Paul Revere Williams, whose designs were sought after by many of Hollywood’s Golden Era elite, and Dr Joseph Jackson, whose many inventions range from the programmable DVR to Fem-Choice, the fi rst fertility prediction app. “My intent is to show — especially to the kids — that you don’t need to be an athlete or a movie star to achieve great things,” Cole says. “It’s time we give these people the recognition that they deserve for all the good that they’ve done.” That is love. We have poets like Gerda Govine. “I do what I do because I cannot help it. My ancestors whisper in my ear, slide in between my sentences and provide protection that helps me to make a difference using my poetry as a way to round sharp edges of challenging conversations.” That is love. If you believe as I do that the way to equip our young people is to acknowledge the importance of black history, you owe it to your family to attend not just the Black History Parade and Festival, but also the Black History Festival at the Pasadena Central Library on Saturday, Feb. 16. At the festival, Cole exhibits “Contributions of Black Californians: Science, Art, Inventions to the World”; producer Lyn Goldfarb presents the PBS documentary about 20-year Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, the fi rst African- American mayor of a predominantly white city, “Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race”; and Donzaleigh Abernathy, author of “Partners to History: Martin Luther King, Ralph David Abernathy and the Civil Rights Movement,” will speak with a Q&A to follow. We need to impress upon our young people that we live in a world in which one youthful mistake can ruin an entire life, and that living a good life is really the best revenge against haters. They need to understand why they owe a debt of gratitude to those who came before and sacrificed so much in order for them to live in a better world. Like our heroes of the past, they need to care about the world around them and speak out against that which is wrong. It begins by knowing black history, living with an appreciation for the past while making progress into the future. ■ The Black History Festival will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium of the Pasadena Central Library, 285 E. Walnut St., Pasadena. T

he United States is in sore need of ethical leadership, former FBI director James Comey said Monday during a talk at the Ambassador Auditorium in West Pasadena as part of the 23rd season of the Distinguished Speaker Series. “We must make sure good follows bad,” said Comey before an audience of more than 1,200 people. “I’m so worried that the picture of leadership today — not just in our national government, although that’s deeply concerning to me without regard to policy differences but in terms of values — but also in sports, entertainment, religious institutions, nonprofit organizations and corporations. The vision of leadership is so

unethical that I worry people are going to say, ‘That’s just the way it is’ and especially young people will just step away from it, and then we’re going to be deeply sorry.” His wide-ranging remarks covered his hiring by President Obama (who he said is the best listener he’s ever met), his firing by President Trump (which he said was tacky and tasteless), the death of his 9-day-old son Collin, his role in the Russia investigation, Trump’s request for loyalty from him and how important kindness, toughness, confidence, humility, humor and listening are to ethical leadership. “Trump doesn’t know anything about leadership,” Comey

The Pasadena City Council voted 7-1 on Monday to amend the city’s minimum wage ordinance and continue toward $15 an hour in 2020. District 1 Councilman Tyron Hampton was the lone vote against the amendment. “Ultimately, we are judged by how we treat the least fortunate among us,” said Councilman Steve Madison. There were about 60 speakers at the meeting. Most of them spoke in favor of an amendment that would increase the wage to $15 an hour by 2020. The opposition came mostly from local restaurant owners who wanted the council to adopt the state’s minimum wage increase schedule, which reaches $15 in 2022. Even Rose Queen Louise Deser Siskel, who is known for being outspoken, took a stand on the issue. “While Pasadena is an extraordinarily prosperous city, it also has the highest income inequality ratio of any major city,” said Siskel. “Ensuring that anyone in our city can earn a living wage is truly an issue of equality.” The meeting was mandated by an ordinance unanimously passed by the council in 2016 which adopted a minimum wage law that would gradually rise to $13.25 in 2018. Before it could go the next steps, $14.25 in July 2019 and $15 in 2020, the city law required the council to evaluate the economic impacts of the higher wage — an increase schedule adopted by the city of Los Angeles and LA County, only neither of those ordinances contained an evaluation requirement. Following the review, an amendment was required to continue the wage-increase schedule. The issue became a hot topic over the last several weeks as supporters and opponents of the ordinance attempted to meet with members of the Pasadena City Council to sway their votes. A poll taken by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce revealed 40 percent of the chamber members contend increases in the minimum wage have forced them to decrease their workforce. But according to a poll funded by Pasadena Organizing for Progress! (POP!), 81 percent of Pasadena’s voters supported the increase to $15 by 2020. “Mayor Tornek and the City Council proved Monday night with their votes that Pasadena is more than the city of Roses. It is a city of raises,” said Ed Washatka of POP!. — André Coleman

BAD NEWS FOR BACA

NINTH CIRCUIT UPHOLDS FORMER SHERIFF’S CONVICTION BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN

A federal appeals court in Pasadena on Monday upheld former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca’s convictions on charges of obstructing justice and lying to federal Lee Baca authorities. The three-judge panel of the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected claims by Baca’s attorneys that the verdict should be overturned because it was tainted by rulings made by US District Judge Percy Anderson during the disgraced ex-sheriff’s trial. Chief among their concerns were Anderson’s ruling that the jury would not be allowed to hear testimony about Baca’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease, and a conversation that Baca had with an aide about the FBI’s investigation. According to prosecutors, Baca ordered his deputies to hide an inmate who was passing information to the FBI about abuse in the county’s jail system. Baca’s deputies also visited an agent on the inmate abuse case and attempted to intimidate her by threatening to take her into custody. Baca, 76, was sentenced in 2017 to three years behind bars after a jury found he had helped plan the scheme to interfere in the FBI investigation and later lied to prosecutors about his role. In October the appeals court ruled that the question about excluding evidence of Baca’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis “is at least fairly debatable” as it relates to whether it could have affected his conviction for making false statements. Baca can request another hearing, this time “en banc,” or before all 11 judges on the Ninth Circuit. A loss there would allow his attorneys to appeal to the US Supreme Court. Baca, a liberal-leaning Republican, became a renowned national figure in law enforcement circles during his 15 years leading the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He left the department in 2014 shortly after the inmate abuse scandal began, which started with an ACLU investigation that grew into a county-appointed investigative panel that included retired federal judges. Twenty-one deputies were ultimately indicted for their part in the abuse. Undersheriff Paul Tanaka — Baca’s second in command — claimed that Baca led the efforts to cover up the investigation. Tanaka was later sentenced to five years in prison. Former sheriff’s Deputy James Sexton — who served four months in prison for his part in the scandal — testified that he was just following Baca’s orders during efforts to hide an FBI informant who was given a cell phone while in jail. n

DUAL CELEBRATIONS

PASADENA MARKS BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH TWO SPECIAL EVENTS SATURDAY BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

Pasadena will play host to two major events this Saturday in honor of Black History Month, with both Kaj Goldberg the 36th Annual Black History Parade and Festival and a special celebration at the Pasadena Central Library commemorating the occasion. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. at Charles White Park at Ventura Street and Fair Oaks Avenue in Altadena before heading south to its conclusion at the Robinson Park Community Center, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave., for the festival, which will be held from noon to 4 p.m. The parade is the oldest and largest Black History Month parade in Los Angeles County, and its festival will feature live bands, dance performers, community booths and guest speakers in addition to numerous food vendors and food trucks. The grand marshal for the parade is KTLA Channel 5 weatherman Kaj Goldberg, and the festival marks the first major event at the Robinson Park Community Center since its recently completed $12 million renovation. That renovation included a 2 ½ acre expansion of the existing park and improvements that included new soccer and baseball fields, installation of synthetic turf, construction of new restroom and storage facilities, new sports field lighting, site amenities and a parking lot. The 19,000 sq. ft. recreation center was also enhanced. The Pasadena Central Library’s Black History Festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium, 285 E. Walnut Street. The event-packed schedule features an 11:30 a.m. screening of the documentary “Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley & the Politics of Race”, presented by Lyn Goldfarb. The talk “Partners to History: Martin Luther King, Ralph David Abernathy & the Civil Rights Movement” will be presented by Donzaleigh Abernathy, daughter of the Rev. Ralph David Abernathy and will be followed by a Q&A session. The Metropolitan Praise Dancers will perform at 2:15 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. performance by the Down Home Gospel Choirs. Local author and historian Roberta Martinez will present her talk “Beyond Jackie, Rosa and Martin: Black Pioneers with Pasadena Connections” at 4 p.m. All events are free. For more information, call (626) 744-4066 or visit cityofpasadena.net/library/events/2019-0216. A COMPLICATED LEGACY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7

said. “I’ve never ever heard Trump laugh. It is a deeply concerning absence and a sign of insecurity in a leader. And to tell that man important stuff you almost always have to interrupt him. He’s a deeply insecure person.” In 2013, President Obama appointed Comey as the seventh director of the FBI, succeeding Robert S. Mueller III, who now serves as the special counsel investigating whether there was a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and whether Trump obstructed justice of that investigation. Mueller was appointed on May 17, 2017, shortly after Comey was unceremoniously fired by Trump. Difficult Circumstances Before leading the FBI, Comey served as counsel for private law firms, Lockheed Martin and Bridgewater Associates. He also served as a federal prosecutor in New York and Virginia, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and deputy attorney general under John Ashcroft in the Bush II administration. Comey has a complicated legacy. His actions as FBI director during the 2016 election left both Democrats and Republicans upset with him. On July 5, 2016, he unexpectedly went around Justice Department leadership and recommended that no criminal charges should be brought against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server while serving as Secretary of State but added that she had been “extremely careless.” On October 28, 2016, just days before the election, Comey announced that the FBI had found new Clinton emails and was reopening the investigation. The emails turned out to be duplicates, but the damage was done. Meanwhile, Comey kept silent on the fact that Trump and his associates were being investigated by the FBI for their potentially criminal interactions with Russians, seen by some as a double standard on Comey’s part. On Monday, Comey said he regrets having to be a part of that process, but thinks he made the right decisions under difficult circumstances. “I don’t know [if my actions helped elect Trump],” he said. “I really, really, really hope not. But it doesn’t change how I think about my decision—it just increases the pain. The FBI wasn’t on anybody’s side and it also wasn’t out to get Trump.” ‘I Expect Loyalty’ On Jan. 27, 2017, Trump invited Comey to dinner at the White House, an unusual situation for a president and an FBI director. Comey wrote in his book, “A Higher Loyalty: Truth,

Lies, and Leadership,” that the move made him feel uncomfortable because “the president of the United States had invited me to dinner and decided my job security was on the menu.” He said that Trump told him, “I need loyalty [from you]. I expect loyalty.” The request reminded Comey of tactics employed by Cosa Nostra bosses, whom he helped prosecute in the 1990s. “A real leader never asks for loyalty,” Comey said in Pasadena. “All they do is give.” Trump also told Comey he hoped the FBI would let go of the investigation against his then-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. Flynn later pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak in December 2016, during the transition. It was then that Flynn told the Russians not to overreact to Obama’s sanctions as punishment for meddling in the election because Trump would soon be president and overturn them. Flynn was fired in February 2017 and soon began cooperating with Mueller. Former New Jersey Governor and Trump supporter Chris Christie wrote in a new book that Trump and his son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner naïvely believed firing Flynn would end the Russia investigation. Because Comey declined to admit publicly that Trump was not personally under investigation at the time, Trump fired Comey on May 9, 2017. Comey learned about his dismissal by seeing a headline on TV as the director was speaking to FBI agents at a field office in Los Angeles. He said in Pasadena on Monday that he felt both numb and stunned. The White House’s official line was that Comey was fired because of the way he mishandled the Clinton email investigation, citing a memo written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. But one day after firing Comey, Trump invited Kislyak and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov into the Oval Office at the White House, where he told them, “I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job. I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.” And during a televised interview with NBC’s Lester Holt two days after firing Comey, Trump said, “When I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won.’” Trump later claimed Holt doctored the footage of that interview. Trump also said he would have fired Comey whether or not Rosenstein wrote that justification memo, and in an upcoming book by former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who was also fired under pressure from Trump just hours before CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

HOW RACHEL ROBINSON ROBIINSON HELPED HER HUSBAND HUSBAND, JACKIE, BREAK BASEBALL’S COLOR LINE BY CHRIS LAMB

ackie Robinson, who would have turned 100 on Jan. 31, is often remembered for his courage, athleticism, tenacity and sacrifice. By confronting Jim Crow — both as a baseball player and as a civil rights activist — he changed America. “Back in the days when integration wasn’t fashionable,” Martin Luther King Jr. said of Robinson, “he underwent … the loneliness which comes with being a pilgrim walking through the lonesome byways toward the high road of freedom. He was a sit-inner before sit-ins, a freedom rider before freedom rides.” I’ve written three books about Robinson, in addition to dozens of columns and articles. I used to wonder how Robinson persevered in the face of so much hate and ugliness. He was certainly as tough a competitor as any athlete who ever lived, and he had an unwavering religious faith. But I eventually realized that he couldn’t have achieved what he did without his wife, Rachel, whose spirit was as formidable as his own. Sure, he had his mother, Mallie; his minister, Karl Downs; Brooklyn Dodgers’ president, Branch Rickey, who signed him; and sportswriter Wendell Smith, who served as his ghostwriter and confidante. Rachel, however, was the only constant. “She was not simply the dutiful wife,” Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Roger Wilkins said about Rachel. “She had to live through the death threats, CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

BY MICHAEL SPRAGUE | PHOTOS BY DANNY LIAO The calm of January saw the food scene grow with some very welcome additions, among them Asian-inspired sandwich shop Bite Me opening in Eagle Rock and Sierra Madre French favorite Monsieur Crepe choosing Pasadena for a second location. Before opening Bite Me (Mords Moi in French) in January, Suh Keh Bennett spent over 20 years in the entertainment industry, working for film studios and working nearly every side of the business. Throughout her tenure in the fast-paced Hollywood landscape she clung to her dream of opening up her own sandwich shop with an Asian-inspired menu. She kept on the lookout for eight years before a modest storefront in Eagle Rock became available just before the New Year. Just five days after being given the keys to the store she opened the doors to Bite Me and welcomed her first customers. Bennett honed her restaurant chops as part owner of Ma’s Italian Kitchen, where she worked with her now executive chef and Bite Me partner Isaias Del Angel. Together they run Bite Me, and most days it is just the two of them behind the counter prepping, cooking and taking orders. As a team, they bring together two culinary cuisines and cultures. The Mexicasian breakfast burrito ($12) is Del Angel’s labor of love, combining Bennett’s kimchi (her mother’s recipe) eggs, black beans, rice, pasilla, cotija cheese, cilantro and salsa for the perfect embodiment of their partnership. Bite Me’s signature sandwich is the Seoul Cheesesteak($15), a gooey melted combination of thinly sliced 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.14.19

beef, pasilla chiles that provide more of a kick than an actual heat, onions and provolone cheese, finished with kimchi relish to add another kind of soul.” Bite Me’s ramen burrito ($12) is one of the most unique breakfast burritos throughout the Pasadena area. With ramen noodles, eggs, cheese, Chinese sausage and green onions all rolled into a tortilla, it is the most Los Angeles of hangover foods. I typically revile food trends, and ramen has been growing on the trend meter. But this is unlike the ramen burger, where the concept is fun and it makes a great Instagram post but not much more. Instead, the ramen burrito actually works; noodles are seasoned well and tender, which pairs well with the egg and the Chinese sausage. Most importantly, though, the tortilla makes it easy to eat, as you would not want to risk walking into work covered in noodles from your breakfast burrito. Also on the menu are honey butter fries ($4), which are fries tossed in, well, honey butter. Influenced by the ultrapopular honey butter potato chips that cannot stay on shelves in South Korea, Bennett and Executive Chef Del Angel ran through every possible ratio of honey butter to potato before landing the right balance needed to make it to the menu. At the end of your meal, if you have leftovers (and you will because the portions are huge), you can rest easy knowing Bite Me uses recyclable paper boxes and reusable bags. It is a nice touch, one that allows people to ss the people they are giving money to are doing even small things to show they care.

It leaves an impression, one that makes a return visit more likely. Monsieur Crepe, the haven of authentic French cuisine, has officially opened in Sierra Madre. I could not be happier that one of my all-time favorite desserts, the croissant bread pudding ($4.95/slice, $29.95/whole), which is served with made-from-scratch caramel and whipped cream, is even closer to the Pasadena Weekly offices now. On one hand, their being closer is a great thing, but, on the other hand, I can no longer use the excuse that they are far away when I buy the entire tray of bread pudding each time I am even remotely close to Sierra Madre. Monsieur calls their cuisine “Frenchifornia,” which is what happened when a classically trained French Chef Aurélien Mosconi came to Southern California but could not fi nd his French staples anywhere. He saw an opportunity and brought his French food to Sierra Madre, where Southern California flavors seeped their way into some French classics, like the pastrami baguette ($10.75), cured pastrami, caramelized onions, melted Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and house-made garlic mustard-based mayonnaise. They offer sweet and savory crepes for breakfast, as well as baguette sandwiches, salads and quiche. For breakfast, I suggest the grilled salmon crepe ($11.95), served with eggs

and your your choice of Swiss, sharp cheddar or mozzarella cheese. The entire dish is light but still fi ling. The dessert crepes do seem to be the star of the show, maybe because I have an unwavering sweet tooth, or possibly because of their commitment to making all of their crepes, sauces and toppings in-house makes all the difference. The banana split ($9.50), made with fresh bananas and strawberries, is tucked away in a warm crepe blanket drizzled in a chocolate sauce made in-house, served with French vanilla ice cream and almond bits. It is tremendously welldone and well worth a try no matter what time you visit. What sells me on Monsieur is the range of options in experience and cuisine. There are elevated fast-casual breakfasts, a large indoor dining room, outside patio seating, coffee and espresso options, as well as a range of beautifully plated dinners and mouth-watering sweet crepes for dessert. You can stop in for a coffee and to catch up on some work, an indulgent lunch with some of the best and most affordable French food in the city, or an intimate dessert date. ANGER MANAGEMENT

COOL A HOT TEMPER BY THINKING DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THINGS THAT TICK YOU OFF Dear Patti, On the surface, I may seem fine. Underneath, though, I know I’m seething with anger all the time. There have been some pretty gnarly times in my past that would make anybody angry, but’s it’s not necessarily any particular historical problem or reason that triggers me. No matter what confrontational issue arises — and whether I act out or not—I feel totally enraged inside and it’s almost always out of proportion to the situation. I don’t understand why I feel such resentment festering under the surface. I’m 30 and thought as I aged I might start to mellow out. Yet, so far that has not been the case. I have been this way as long as I can remember. I don’t like feeling that way. Any helpful insights? — Keith Dear Keith, Anger is a normal emotion we all experience in reaction to a real or imagined threat or loss. It is a resentment against being hurt. When feelings associated with painful life experiences are cumulatively suppressed, the result is a buildup of intense hurt and resentment which interferes with your life, health and relationships. The more these feelings are forced to remain below the surface, the less outside stimuli are needed to trigger a response that, as you’ve described, is often stronger than the situation actually warrants. It’s also important to understand the difference between anger and aggression; specifically, anger is an emotion and aggression is a behavior that can manifest in destructive, violent or intimidating actions. A commonly held belief is that the only effective

12 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.14.19

way to express anger is through aggressive outbursts. Anger doesn’t necessarily result in aggression, but it’s more likely to occur when one’s emotions are purposely avoided, unaccepted and accumulated inside. Take a moment to envision yourself with a huge, cumbersome vase filled to its brim with water. What if you had to walk around carrying this vase for the rest of your life and were never allowed to set it down, even for a second? What if the tiniest spillage emitted a horrible odor and no one wanted to be around you? You have three choices: (1) Try to suppress the water down in the vase (even though there’s clearly no room); (2) Keep carrying it around and try not to spill any water; or (3) Dump the water out as efficiently as you can (and with as little smell as possible leaking out) and make a conscientious future effort to keep systematically dumping out any new water that accumulates before it ever reaches the brim again. By choosing the third option, the water level will steadily be lowered, along with the burden of carrying it. It is similar when one is full of anger and resentment just under the surface. That you acknowledge you’ve had your feelings of anger as long as you can recall suggests you may want to explore professional counseling. There are many knowledgeable, compassionate psychotherapists out there with various therapeutic modalities created to treat the problem you’ve described. Keep in mind that the goal of therapy isn’t to repress the feelings of anger but to first dispel the idea that those feelings are wrong and bad. Anger and other difficult emotions are a natural part of the human condition. By providing a safe place to explore and experience these feelings fully, a therapist can help you identify the hurt which underlies your anger, face your feelings and understand their historical relevance. Therapy can also help you recognize specific anger triggers and cues, as well as develop an awareness of situations, people and behaviors that provoke your anger, and learn how to express such wrath in a healthy, assertive and appropriate manner. Some of the strategies and techniques which have proven effective in working with anger issues include Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Heals, Mindfulness, Dialectical Behavior Therapies, Assertiveness Training and Rageaholics Anonymous. Begin your search now to find the right therapist and situation that suits and supports you in your unique journey to learn healthier ways to process and understand all your feelings and ultimately improve how you relate to others. Change can happen with self-acceptance and, in turn, the acceptance and understanding of others. ■ Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. FORGED IN LOVE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 09

endure the vile sc scre screams reams of the fans and watch her husband get knocked down by pitch after pitch. … She was beautiful and wise and replenished his strength and courage.” Rachel Isum met Jackie Robinson at UCLA when she was a freshman and he was a senior. Jackie was a four-letter athlete and “a big man on campus,” as she described him. They married five years later on Feb. 10, 1946, a few months after Brooklyn Dodgers President Branch Rickey signed Jackie to play for the organization’s top minor league team, the Montreal Royals. Two-and-a-half weeks after the wedding, the Robinsons left the relative comfort of Los Angeles to go to spring training in Florida. Robinson would have to confront both baseball’s color line and the Jim Crow laws of the South, where blacks who challenged segregation risked jail, injury or death. Rachel knew she and Jackie could not react to every racial epithet hurled their way. But she wasn’t averse to quiet forms of resistance. When their plane stopped in New Orleans on their fl ight to Florida, Rachel saw something she had never seen before: separate restrooms for “white women” and “colored women.” She defiantly walked into the restroom marked “white women.” During that fi rst spring training, segregation laws prohibited the Robinsons from staying in the same oceanfront hotel in Daytona Beach with his white teammates. Nor could they eat in white restaurants. They stayed with a black family and ate their meals in a black restaurant. Robinson, feeling the weight of representing millions of black Americans, struggled during the beginning of spring training. He had trouble hitting, and he hurt his throwing arm so badly that he could barely lift it. Rachel calmed Jackie every night in their small room, massaging his sore arm as he raged against the indignities he faced on and off the field. She also learned she was pregnant while they were in Daytona Beach, but decided not to tell him. “There was such an incredible amount of pressure, it might have driven two people apart,” she told Sports Illustrated in 2013. “But it had the opposite effect on us, it pushed us together.” At some point, as Rachel later told Robinson biographer Arnold Rampersad, Jackie began to refer to himself not as “I” but as “we.” Jackie and Rachel were united as civil rights activists; they knew, as Rachel put it, “that the issue wasn’t simply baseball but life and death, freedom and bondage, for a lot of people.” As the spring progressed, Jackie’s arm improved and so did his confidence. He played the 1946 season with the Montreal Royals before being promoted to the Dodgers the next spring. He established himself as one of the best players in the National League. But the racist epithets continued to rain down on him from the stands and the dugouts of opposing teams. Rachel was determined to make their home a refuge from that malevolence, whether the Robinsons were living in Montreal, New York City, or later, in Stamford, Connecticut. “We had a pledge to each other that we were going to try to keep the house a haven,” she said. “Someplace safe. Someplace we didn’t have to replay the mess outside.” Rachel raised their three children while her husband was playing baseball and crusading for civil rights. After earning her master’s degree, she worked as a nurse-therapist and researcher at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She then taught nursing at Yale University while she served as director of the Connecticut mental health center. After Jackie died, Rachel created the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which has provided scholarships for 1,400 college students. When the Jackie Robinson biopic “42” was released in 2013, Brian Helgeland, the fi lm’s writer and director, asked Rachel what she thought of the fi lm. “I loved how much we kissed,” Helgeland recalled Rachel telling him. “And then she got emotional,” he continued. “It was the only thing she ever said to me about the fi nished fi lm. And it hit me: Her take-away from the whole thing was that she got to see her husband one more time.” ■ Chris Lamb is a professor of journalism at Indiana University — Purdue University Indianapolis. ‘F’ IS FOR FUNNY COMIC BILL BURR LETS HIS INNER RAGE RIP AT PASADENA CIVIC AUDITORIUM SATURDAY BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

N

amed by Rolling Stone as “the undisputed heavyweight champ of rage-fueled humor,” Bill Burr has parlayed his many frustrations with everyday life into a career as one of the top comics in America today. Standing up to a world gone mad with political correctness, he has proudly laid claim to being “the dude, bro guy” who loudly admits his cynicism toward the world around him, and become regarded as one of the main heirs to the style of comedic righteous indignation pioneered by George Carlin and Richard Pryor. One sure sign of his explosive rise is the fact that just two years after headlining shows at Pasadena’s Ice House comedy club, Burr is making the leap on Saturday night to performing at the 3,000seat Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Building off his wildly successful “Monday Morning Podcast,” in which he delivers an hour-long dose of outrage for the week, as well as his five Netflix specials and the Netflix animated series “F Is For Family,” he should draw a packed house of devoted disciples. A 50-year-old Massachusetts native, Burr studied radio at Emerson College in Boston, which has also produced numerous other comedy stars, including Jay Leno, Denis Leary and Dane Cook. He developed his working-class attitude from a string of blue-collar day jobs at the start of his comedy career, including work as a forklift operator in a warehouse. He quickly became admired among many other comedy stars for his unbelievably direct aim at all manner of societal targets, and after making the rounds of podcasts with superstars, including Adam Carolla, Marc Maron and Joe Rogan, he

decided to take control of the medium and launched the “All Things Comedy” podcast network with Al Madrigal. Home to 67 podcasts from 93 comedians, ATC began as a podcast network but is continually growing to include all forms of content, including videos, comedy specials and records. Burr has also been slowly but surely growing a reputation as a terrific comedic actor as well, playing a key role in the Kevin Costner drama “Black and White” while also recurring as Patrick Kuby in two seasons of “Breaking Bad,” and one of the Miami Herald reporters who brought down 1988 Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart in last fall’s film “The Front Runner.” His passion remains firmly rooted in performing standup, however. Despite his onstage vitriol, his personal life has become much happier via his marriage to producer, director and screenwriter Nia Hill and becoming a father two years ago to his daughter, Lola. “There’s a lot of drama in my life. If you’re a comedian, everything you do all day is silly, but comedians make everything dramatic in their life funny. Believe me,” Burr says. “I fail a lot in my personal life, and then I talk about it. Or certain things bug me. I don’t like this about myself, but I’m very easily agitated and I have a temper which is something I’m working on. It’s great for my comedy, but not in any other area of my life.“ n Bill Burr performs at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, 300 E. Green St., Pasadena. Tickets are $50. Aside from the wow factor of their collective musicianship, what’s gratifying about Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks’ 12-piece, swampy blues-rock-soul revival of a band is that they continue to sound like they care enough to dig deep and try harder. That includes ignoring commercial strictures to embrace spiraling, elastic guitar solos, gospel-rich harmonies, and collaborating with friends (Doyle Bramhall II, Warren Haynes, Oliver Wood) on songs slamming injustice (the “poison in the well” indictment “Shame”) and celebrating life and love (“Walk Through This Life,” “I’m Gonna Be There”) over funky, horn-punched grooves. tedeschitrucksband.com

The open roads of 2007’s “Mescalito” led the resilient troubadour to this, his most consistent — and consistently interesting — album since then. Co-produced with longtime Dylan guitarist Charlie Sexton, it’s Stonesy tough and tender; the depression of “Blue” gives way to the stomping groove and magnetic lick of “Hot House,” then the prayerful “Stones” and anguished “America.” Anti-bullying standout “Wolves” protests injustice; elsewhere Bingham alternates piano-barreled roadhouse rock (“Jingle and Go”) with valentines to his wife (“Lover Girl”), and the fingerpicked blues of “Beautiful and Kind” is viscerally satisfying: “I’ve been dreaming, walking down this road alone at night/ It’s gonna lead to love and peaceful times.” ryanbingham.com

Broadway, Downtown LA, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16; $26-$56. Info: (213) 623-3233. Thesoulrebels.com, acehotel.com

After a rejuvenating recording break, the ScottishSwedish singer-songwriter’s second full-length winds insightful, sometimes biting lyrics around acoustic guitars, piano, and electronically textured arrangements more spaciously intimate than previous releases. A yearning for “Sacred” love and integrity tussles with the “high hopes and low blows” of romance in the age of Tinder (“Is It Really Me You’re Missing”), while sticky pop hooks and Nesbitt’s falsetto pull attention to the striking lyrics of standouts like “Empire,” “The Best You Had,” “Things I Say When You Sleep” and ’90s bangersinspired “Loyal to Me.” ninanesbittmusic.com

COLIN LINDEN & LUTHER DICKINSON WITH THE TENNESSEE VALENTINES, Amour (Stony Plain): HHH Opening with a delicious, Dobro-greased instrumental saunter through the traditional blues “Careless Love,” the veteran guitarists create a relaxed sonic vibe for a tasty set of romantic country, pop and R&B standards by Charlie Feathers, Kris Kristofferson and Jimmy Reed, among others. It takes nothing from their guest vocalists (including Ruby Amanfu and “Nashville” TV show alums Jonathan Jackson and Sam Palladio) to say an album of Linden and Dickinson’s rootsy instrumentals would be just as appealing. colinlinden.com, lutherdickinson.com

Puppy Love GROOM EXPO WEST RETURNS TO PASADENA BY JANA J. MONJI If you watched the Netflix original series “Dogs” you know that Pasadena was prominently featured in episode 4, “Scissors Down,” which looked at last year’s Groom Expo West. This year’s expo and competition begins today, Thursday, and runs until Sunday at the Pasadena Convention Center. Although the Netflix episode starts in Tokyo and introduces the audience to two Japanese dog groomers, Kenichi Hagase of Bubbles grooming saloon and Miki Takagi of Tall Tree and some of their clients, three other competitors are also featured: Cat Orson, who was a member of Groom Team USA; Blake Hernandez, who has his own line of shears; and Jackie Bolton of Canada. In the film, Hernandez says Groom Expo West is “rough” because “It brings out the biggest hitters.” Hagase has been giving presentations around Pasadena and notes that American and Japanese concepts of cuteness aren’t the same, but Hagase wants to present his personal style. On Thursday, he will be giving a presentation on his version of Japanese styling, and on Friday demonstrate how to construct a safe and efficient grooming environment. Also on Friday, Opson will be giving a talk about how she grooms mixed breeds (“Mixed Breed Mania”), and Hernandez will give a presentation on marketing and branding. Billed as the West Coast’s “most illustrious grooming show,” the exhibition’s product displays and seminars are for anyone involved in the training, breeding, exhibiting, handling and grooming of dogs and cats, and spectators can watch the World Grooming Games. Sporting and Salon Freestyle is the competition shown in “Dogs” and this year it is scheduled for Saturday morning, but there are also competitions for poodles (Saturday afternoon); all other purebreds (Friday afternoon) and wirecoated breeds (Friday morning). Sunday afternoon features the Andis Creative Styling Tournament, which allows for “creative sculpting, color application, character creation and design.” The five tournaments offer prize money and trophies in three competitive skill levels. The contests aren’t just about pampered pets. The Rescue Round-Up (Sunday morning) draws dogs from local groups and gives the groomers two and a half hours to make the dogs more visually pleasing, thus more adoptable. Top prizes are $2,500 for Best in Show. First place winners for Creative Styling and Rescue Round-Up will take home $1,500 and $1,000, respectively. The expo is closed to pets that are not involved in the competitions or demos, but service animals are permitted. The cost to attend the trade show is $10 with pre-registration or $15 at the door. Doors open at 10 a.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They close at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Attendees will be able to view parts at the shows (morning competitions start before the trade show opens), but the price for the other events and seminars varies. n For more information, visit groomexpowest.com or barkleighevents.com/groom-expo-west.

he would be eligible for retirement benefits, McCabe wrote that Trump ordered Rosenstein to write that memo against his wishes. ‘Shameful’ Attacks Trump has called Comey an “untruthful slime ball” and a “showboat.” Comey’s “aww shucks” demeanor strikes some as genuine and others as not so much. After Comey had a friend deliver the contemporaneous memos he wrote after his awkward meetings with Trump to the media, Trump tweeted, “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” When questioned during a congressional hearing about the existence of such tapes, Comey said, “Lordy, I hope there are tapes.” A lifelong Republican, Comey has since his firing turned his ire on Trump and congressional Republicans. The latter have hauled Comey before Congress several times in the past two years.

After the most recent hearings in December, Comey tweeted that it “wasn’t a search for truth, but a desperate attempt to find anything that can be used to attack the institutions of justice investigating this president. They came up empty today but will try again. In the long run, it’ll make no difference because facts are stubborn things.” Comey told reporters that Republicans were “talking again about Hillary Clinton’s emails, for heaven’s sake,” and called Republicans’ silence in the face of Trump’s attacks on the FBI and other US institutions “shameful.” “I’ve been a Republican most of my adult life,” he said in Pasadena. “What I say to my Republican colleagues is, imagine the next president’s a Democrat and she starts calling for the jailing of private citizens, attacking the intelligence agencies and the FBI and calling for criminal investigations of her political opponents. What’s your reaction going to be? Your head’s going to

explode. So why is it not exploding now? This is about America’s values. I get why Donald Trump is doing it; in a way, it’s kind of his thing. What’s most disturbing is, Republicans are standing there with their hands in their pockets looking at their shoes.” He added that Trump is trying to burn down the FBI because he sees it as a threat, but that in the long run the institution and the country will survive the Trump presidency. “We are going to be OK. All of this will pass,” he said. “But we need a moment of inflection in this country. If Trump were removed from office by impeachment, a whole lot of people would believe that there’d been a coup. We need to vote the values that glue us together. We need to remove him from office using that mechanism, so we send a message that we will not have a leader who does not embody those values.” Learn more about the Distinguished Speaker Series at speakersla.com. n

‘WHAT MEN WANT’ AND ‘ISN’T IT ROMANTIC’ BRING MUCH NEEDED LAUGHTER BACK TO THE MOVIES

T

he past couple of years have been dire for the state of comedy films, with not one reaching $100 million blockbuster status last year, and not one major romantic comedy released into theaters at all. Only 2017’s “Girls Trip” really connected with audiences at a huge hit level, but that was marred by nonstop crassness including a scene in which Jada Pinkett Smith urinated on an entire crowd of Mardi Gras partiers when she got trapped dangling above them. So I’m happy to report that things finally seem to be turning a corner, as theaters this weekend feature two major rom coms in last week’s hit “What Men Want” and the fantastic new release “Isn’t It Romantic.” Both films solidly deliver on both providing laughter and romance, and are a lot of fun to see while with an audience also unleashing the nearly-forgotten sound of collective laughter. “Men” stars the excellent actress Taraji P. Henson (“Hustle and Flow,” Fox TV’s “Empire”) in a genderflipped take on the 2000 smash hit Mel Gibson comedy “What Women Want,” in which he played a sexist rich guy who suddenly acquired the ability to hear women’s thoughts, and used it to his advantage. Here, Henson plays a sports agent named Ali Davis who is successful representing Olympic athletes but is overlooked for a promotion to partner at her firm because she’s not landing deals for professional star athletes. Ali is also clueless in her dating life, focused only on her own pleasure during hookups and not bothering to think about long-term relationships. But when she visits a bizarre psychic (Erykah Badu) during a bachelorette party for one of her friends and drinks some strangetasting tea the oracle gives her, she wakes up with the ability to hear what every man around her is thinking. The results are funny from the get-go, as writer Tina Gordon Chism comes up with a seemingly endless parade of hilarious thoughts for Ali to overhear. And now that she can hear what her agency rivals are thinking, she’s able to trick her way into the running to land America’s hottest basketball prospect as her star client — if she can get past the doubts of his eccentric father Joe “Dolla” Barry (Tracy Morgan). To win the traditional-minded Joe over, she pretends her latest one-night stand Will (Aldis Hodge) — who turns out to be a widowed single dad — and his son are her husband and son. But juggling all the lies puts her in a precarious place that will force her to learn some lessons. These are all standard rom com plot elements, but “Men” succeeds greatly by handling its standard-level core material extremely well. Led by Henson and Morgan (who’s at his absolute nuttiest here), the cast is uniformly excellent, providing a constant stream of laughs

while also handling the more heartfelt moments solidly as well. This isn’t high art, and it is predictable overall, but if you’re looking to laugh and have an upbeat date night, you will definitely be satisfied. “Romantic” is far more inventive, as it plays fast and loose with every cliché in the romantic comedy genre to hilarious results. Starring comic force of nature Rebel Wilson (the “Pitch Perfect” trilogy) as a New York City architect named Natalie in her first-ever lead performance, the film opens by showing that she was obsessed with the movie “Pretty Woman” as a child in the ’90s until her mother convinced her that rom coms are filled with lies and no man will ever marry her since she’s heavyset. Natalie is first seen waking up in an insanely tiny apartment before trudging to an office where she gets zero respect from everyone except her best friend Josh (Adam Devine), who is secretly in love with her. Natalie hopelessly pines for a handsome billionaire client named Blake (Liam Hemsworth), who utterly disregards her and treats her like the office coffee girl. But things change when Natalie bangs her head into a pole while escaping a subway mugger, and wakes up to a shinier, hopelessly happier world in which everyone and everything around her seems to be part of a giant real-life romantic comedy. Suddenly Blake is obsessed with her, her newly glowing confidence is making her a star at work and her humble hovel has become an endlessly large, palatial condo filled with dozens of glamorous shoes and outfits that fit her perfectly. To get back to the real world, she has to convince someone to fall in love with her, and Natalie sets her sights on winning Blake over. When Josh suddenly is engaged to a supermodel (Priyanka Chopra), she has to decide which guy will bring her true happiness. This no doubt sounds predictable again, but the script by Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox and Katie Silberman and the direction by Todd Strauss-Schulson are magical. “Romantic” tears apart seemingly hundreds of ridiculous rom com tropes while constantly creating fresh takes on the timeworn genre, and StraussSchulson keeps everything moving with high energy, including two incredible song and dance numbers that had the audience I screened this with applauding and cheering loudly. This will almost surely be on my ten favorite films list at the end of the year. Either of these films is a fine choice for a fun night out on this Valentine’s weekend. Yet more importantly, they show that there’s still life in the comedy genre.. n

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The proposed project consists of Zoning Code amendments responding to community concerns related to single-family residential development perceived to be out of scale or character with existing neighborhoods. The proposed amendments would revise existing development standards related to single-family dwellings within the RS-1, RS-2, RS4, and RS-6 zones. PROJECT LOCATION: Citywide ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: The Planning Commission will consider whether adoption of the proposed Zoning Code amendments are exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act under Class 5 ß15305 Minor Alterations in Land Use Limitations and Class 8 ß15308 - Actions by Regulatory Agencies for Protection of the Environment. Class 5 consists of minor alterations in land use limitations in areas with an average slope of less than 20%, which do not result in any changes in land use or density. Class 8 consists of action taken by regulatory agencies, as authorized by state and local ordinance, to assure the maintenance, restoration, enhancement, or protection of the environment where the regulatory process involves procedures for protection of the environment. APPROVALS NEEDED: The Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing and consider the proposed CEQA exemption and code amendments on February 27, 2019. The Planning Commission will forward its recommendation to the City Council.
