A SOLDIER-PRESIDENT With every passing year, politicians grow more confident in their ability to thrust Americans into another war, to make decisions that benefit themselves and not their constituents, and to increase their profits as the average American can hardly scrape by. Few politicians take a stand against this, to what has become the norm, and when they do, the mainstream media will either smear them or not cover

them at all. It takes a soldierpresident to reverse this course. Fortunately, we have such a candidate right now. Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard officially kicked off her presidential campaign in Waikiki. A major in the Army National Guard, Gabbard, 37, did two tours of duty in the Middle East before being elected to Congress in 2012. She drew on that experience during her announcement. “These powerful politicians dishonor the sacrifices made by every one of my brothers and sisters in uniform and their families, as they are the ones who pay the prices of these wars,” she said. During her time in Congress, Gabbard has taken the now rare position of calling out and opposing the United States’ interventionist military policies. Gabbard further expressed that “every American pays the price for these wars that cost us trillions of dollars since 9/11.” Tulsi Gabbard has a history of taking a stand. In 2016 she resigned from her position as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee to endorse Bernie Sanders, as the Establishment Democrats and the mainstream media made an orchestrated attempt to push their candidate of choice, Hillary Clinton. It would

seem history repeats itself. CNN has already effectively endorsed Kamala Harris, providing her with favorable coverage and a prime-time town hall event. Over the years I’ve learned it’s best to first follow the money. Kamala Harris’s largest donor is Warner Media Group, the parent company of CNN. Tulsi Gabbard is a unique 2020 presidential candidate who is not taking corporate PAC money to fund her campaign. That means all of her funding must come from the people. I was not yet 12 years old when John Kennedy delivered his inaugural address. His speech had a profound impact in my life when several years later I would volunteer to join the Marine Corps. Major Gabbard turned to those inspiring words when she said this: “I ask you to join me, in this spirit of putting service before self, to stand up against the forces of greed and corruption. John F. Kennedy once said, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.’ We must heed his call to action today, at this critical time in our history. We must stand up and fight for the soul of our country.” It is clear that we, as a nation, have forgotten the core principles of what America was meant to be. Tulsi Gabbard’s words and deeds as a soldier and elected representative offer a glimmer of hope that she might be the right leader to help us all rediscover what it means to be an American. “When we raise our right hand and volunteer to serve, we set aside our own interests to serve our country, to fight for all Americans. It is this principle of service above self that is at the heart of every soldier. At the heart of every service number.” She continued, “I will bring this soldier’s principles to the White House, restoring the values of dignity, honor and respect to the presidency and above all else, love for our people and love for our country.” ~ WILLIAM PAPARIAN FORMER MAYOR OF PASADENA

LIFE AND DEATH CLIMATE CHANGE IS NOT ONLY REAL BUT NOW WARMING THE EARTH AND ITS OCEANS AT A FASTER RATE THAN EVER

B

y now everyone in the US has heard the words climate change and global warming. It seems that the overwhelming evidence holds that it is happening, and we have only a short time to do something about it to avoid a global disaster. The vast majority of scientists around the world and in our own nation have come to the conclusion that it is happening due to continued use of fossil fuels by humans, which is damaging the atmosphere with excessive carbon, causing the warming. The curious thing is that, despite the overwhelming evidence, there is a consistent percentage of people who deny that it is a fact. Those who deny it are led by our denier-in-chief Donald Trump. He has been very vocal that he simply does not believe it. His denial is based solely on his ego and the belief that he has some supreme authority and people should just believe his opinion. His position reminds me of the old joke about the man who was caught cheating by his wife. His denial to her was, “Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?” So those who follow Trump blindly may continue to believe what they are told without question by their authoritarian leader. Well, our eyes can see the damaging results of fossil fuel pollution and the resultant warming. Rather than continuing to concentrate on all of the effects of carbon pollution, maybe we should try to understand what it is about American culture that causes such skepticism about the harm it is doing. The entire argument against doing something about it comes from the fossil fuel industry. Their argument is the same as the tobacco industry presidents who testified before Congress and swore that smoking cigarettes was not harmful to health. The corruption of capitalism is that short-term profits trump the interests of the general welfare of society. There are other examples of that greedy approach, such as when the auto, gasoline and tire industries destroyed the red car cable system in Los Angeles to make the population dependent on cars. That resulted in air pollution, smog and respiratory problems. Now Exxon is trying to squelch a lawsuit inquiring into the company’s internal memos as early as the 1970s that outlined the damaging effects on the climate by fossil fuels and their decision to hide the facts from the public. It turns out that in 2018 carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased from the previous year for the fi rst time after a three-year plateau, according to a story in The New York Times last December. But carbon pollution and the global warming it causes have come back with a vengeance. The Antarctic ice shelves are now melting more than six times faster than they did in the 1980s. A recent study has found the ice loss is accelerating dramatically —- a key indicator of human-caused climate change, this newspaper recently reported. Related to the breakdown in Antarctica ice is the warming of the oceans, which last year were warmer than they have ever been. It’s all happening very quickly — much faster than previously recognized. Every year of the last decade was among the 10 warmest ever measured. This warming contributes to more intense hurricanes, destroys coral reefs, and causes sea levels to rise. It is also causing fi sh and other marine species to migrate toward the poles, leading to harmful disruptions to fi sheries that provide food and a livelihood to hundreds of millions of people around the world, the LA Times reported weeks ago. The warming compounds the problem of the increasing acidity of the oceans, which is increasing due to the oceans absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This results in more carbonic acid formation, causing an increase in acidity which is harmful to many marine organisms. Back on land, California has recently had some devastating wildfi res, which have killed scores of people and destroyed thousands of homes and other structures. A big contributor to these disasters has been climate change, which increases the chance of wildfi res. All of this was predicted by a recent report issued last November by 13 federal agencies that was buried in the news on Black Friday. Among the “chilling conclusions” contained in this National Climate Assessment was a doubling of the chances of devastation from wildfi res in the Southwestern US due to heated and dried-out conditions caused by global warming. The president’s attitude does make a difference. Climate change is not a politically correct fad. It is a matter of life and death for our children. ■ Louis Santilena and John Grula are Pasadena citizens concerned about climate change. 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.21.19

istrict 5 City Councilman Victor Gordo was having dinner with his family one night recently when someone came to his front door with a petition. Gordo was shocked to hear the young man was collecting signatures so organizers “could bring rent control back.” The councilman said he was told “Victor Gordo and the City Council had removed that issue.” Gordo, who knew Pasadena has never had rent control, asked to see the petition and after a closer look realized the petition had nothing to do with that issue. Instead, the man was collecting signatures for a recall effort that would remove the five-time councilman from office. “After I tried to take a picture of the second page he snatched it

out of my hand and said I wasn’t allowed to photograph it,” Gordo told the Pasadena Weekly. “He walked away swiftly up my front lawn and when I followed him to ask him about it he ran off.” According to the petition filed by Bradley Hertz of a San Francisco-based law firm, “Gordo puts his personal profits ahead of the people of Pasadena.” The petition also states Gordo “is unresponsive to calls and correspondence and inaccessible to community members and constituents.” But perhaps more to the point of this effort to drive Gordo out of office is that the petition also claims that the councilman referred local cannabis legislation to a city committee that he chaired so he could “write a law that punishes state compliant CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Members of anti-gay and anti-Semitic Westboro Baptist Church have targeted openly bisexual 2019 Rose Queen Louise Deser Siskel and are expected to picket Monday at her high school. According to the church’s website, godLouise Deser Siskel hatesfags.com, members of the Kansas-based congregation, described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as “arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America,” will picket from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. at Sequoyah High School, located on the campus of Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in West Pasadena. “That poor child has been so saturated in filthiness that she bragged about being a pervert of the deepest waters (‘the first LGBTQ queen’), honoring what God has called abominable. Uh-oh, that calls for preaching!” the website states. In a column published in the Los Angeles Times on New Year’s Eve, Siskel came out as bisexual and noted that she is Jewish. “[I]n this new, very public position, I feel it’s important to present myself authentically, especially to those who look to the Royal Court as a representation of our community,” wrote Siskel, who could not be reached for comment. “While I am almost certainly not the first member of the LGBTQ community on the court, I hope that by saying so publicly, I might encourage others to be proud of who they are.” Westboro followers, who are perhaps best known for demonstrating at funerals of service members and victims in national tragedies, are “extremely offensive and inflammatory,” Neighborhood Church officials wrote on their Facebook page. “While Sequoyah has been advised not to engage with picketers, we are planning a peaceful response on our campus to counter their hateful rhetoric with a message of love, LGBTQ welcome and interfaith solidarity.” The Rev. Lissa Gundlach of Neighborhood Church wrote on a public Facebook group page that she is calling on “our community [to] come together to rise above this hate group.” Gundlach recommended that parents drop off their children earlier than 7:45 a.m. or later than 8:15 a.m. to avoid the Westboro picketers. In an email exchange with a concerned resident, Pasadena Police Chief John Perez described Westboro as “peaceful and cooperative” based on previous encounters with the group. He added that they expect “a very loud group of 15 people or so — likely not much more.” — Justin Chapman

WARREN REPORT

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ELIZABETH WARREN UNVEILS POLICY PLANS AT ALEX THEATRE APPEARANCE BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN

The day before Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) announced that he was entering the 2020 presidenElizabeth Warren tial race, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) unveiled a plan for universal child care at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. Speaking in front of a sold out crowd of more than 1,400 people, with many more waiting to get into the event as people poured out onto Brand Boulevard, Warren said her plan would cover children from birth until they are 5 years old. The insurance would be funded by a 2 percent wealth tax on those making more than $50 million a year. “We could pay for universal child care and a whole lot more if we just asked the one-tenth of 1 percent to pay a fair share,” Warren said, NBC News reported. Warren acknowledged that the plan would cost a lot of money. In fact, “[It would cost] about four times more than we have invested in our children, but that’s exactly what we need to do,” Warren said. California was the fourth state Warren visited in a three-day span. California moved its primary from June to March last year to give voters more of a voice in the presidential nominating process. The move is likely to force more candidates to visit the state earlier in the election season. Warren is one of the first candidates for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination to have an event in the Los Angeles area. US Sen. Kamala Harris has already conducted two fundraisers on LA’s West Side. “Our fight is to change the rules so that our government, our economy, and our democracy work for everyone in Nevada and across the country,” Warren said during a stop Sunday in the Silver State. “It’s time for Democrats to declare who we are. We are the party of the people. We are the party that believes that every kid should get a fighting chance to build a future. We’re going to take 2020 as our chance to build a movement and change this country for the better.” n

TIME OUT

GOURDIKIAN SENTENCING SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN

After two postponements, a former Pasadena police lieutenant is now scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 25 for selling more than 100 weapons without a federal firearms license, one of which was recovered Vasken Gourdikian at a crime scene, and lying on a federal form. Vasken Gourdikian, a 26-year police veteran who served as the department’s spokesman just prior to his indictment, listed off-roster firearms for sale on Calguns.net, a website for gun enthusiasts. Off-roster weapons can only be purchased by police officers. In order to sell such a weapon, an officer must have a federal firearms license. Private transactions of weapons are allowed, but if the seller is operating as a dealer, or regularly selling weapons to make a profit, then the seller must have a federal license. Gourdikian pleaded guilty to that charge and lying on a federal form in September. He is asking for a 30-month noncustodial sentence that will keep him out of jail due to what he describes as an addiction to collecting firearms. Federal prosecutors are asking Judge Stephen V. Wilson to send Gourdikian to prison for 30 months. If Wilson does not accept the plea deal and orders him to stand trial, Gourdikian could face 15 years in prison if convicted. According to the prosecution’s sentencing declaration, Gourdikian “at times used his charity work to further his illegal firearms conduct. In regards to his charity-related fundraising efforts, defendant controlled a Chase Bank account in the name of ‘Gourdikian, dba Gourdikian Blue Smoke, the document states.’” Fundraisers were held under the name Blue Smoke to raise funds for the Police Athletic League. Prosecutors also claimed the money from the charity was placed in the same account as the proceedings from the gun activity. Agents with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives served a search warrant on Gourdikian at his Sierra Madre home in Februrary 2017 and seized 57 weapons. Gourdikian was scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 4. The date was later moved to Feb. 13, before the current date was set. According to Thom Mrozek, director of media relations for the US Attorney’s Office, the court initially moved the sentencing, but things were further complicated due to a scheduling conflict by one of the lawyers in the case. “[It was] moved on the court’s own accord,” said Mrozek. n 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.21.19

cannabis operators.” Hertz represents Pasadena business owner Shaun Szameit and Golden State Collective, a nowshuttered cannabis operation that has been cited more than a dozen times for infractions related to operating a marijuana business without a license. The petition was signed by 88 people, but only 35 of the signatures were from people who actually live in the district, according to one source familiar with the petition. Petitioners needed 25 signatures from residents of District 5 to begin the recall process. Neither Szameit nor Hertz currently reside in District 5. On Monday, Szameit said he had previously lived in the district. The property that houses Golden State Collectives, which is owned by Szameit, is located in the district. “I have approached my council member as a district resident, a business owner, a property owner, as a concerned citizen, each time being ignored and postponed without care of cause or effect,” Szameit told the Pasadena Weekly. “We support a candidate who rather than ignoring the controversial issues and only acting when forced, believes in outreach and action.” Recall backers now have 120 days to collect 2,000 signatures from District 5 residents that are needed to get the issue on the ballot and allow voters to decide Gordo’s political fate. Even if the recall gets on the ballot, opponents could have a hard time defeating Gordo, who is currently the longest serving councilman in Pasadena. He handily defeated two opponents in the 2016 election with more than 64 percent of the vote. In the last effort to recall a councilman, opponents of District 6 Councilman Steve Madison only collected 33 signatures in 90 days. The action was taken after Madison supported an environmental impact report that would have allowed the NFL to temporarily play in the Rose Bowl in 2013. When reached for comment, one District 5 resident said he would continue to support Gordo. “Some guy who ran an illegal cannabis dispensary is all mad because his shop didn’t get to be one of the licensed ones,” said Jim MacQuarrie, a District 5 resident who approached the council regarding the nuisance liquor stores in his neighborhood in 2005. “Well, duh, if you show the city that you’re happy to break the law when it suits you, they are going to be inclined not to validate that. So now he wants to buy an election?” MacQuarrie asked. “Nah, I’ll support Victor on this one.” More than $26,000 in donations were returned to Szameit by the political action group (PAC), Pasadena Patients for Safe Neighborhoods, sponsored by Medical Cannabis Dispensaries, which disbanded in 2018. The group was formed in 2017 to oppose the closure of illegally operating dispensaries, including Golden State Collective. Hertz was an officer in that PAC. Szameit and three other defendants — Elizabeth

McDuffie, Yulissa Gonzalez, and Tony Gutierrez — were scheduled to appear in court Feb. 13 for arraignment on charges of illegal cannabis possession and sale. However, the arraignments were rescheduled for March 22. The petition also claims Gordo misses council meetings and that he has a conflict of interest on rent control issues because he owns rental property in Pasadena. Gordo entered local politics as former District 5 Councilman Bill Crowfoot’s field representative in 1997. The district was created by the council in the early 1990s to increase voting opportunities for the city’s growing Latino population. Ironically, Crowfoot is white, but spoke Spanish fluently, unlike his Latino opponent in his first of two successful runs. Since coming to council in 2001, Gordo, who is also bilingual, has led the city’s fight against nuisance liquor stores, with the city closing down two such businesses, one of which was the site of a murder. Affordable housing has been built at both locations. In fact, more affordable housing units for families, seniors, and first-time homeowners have been built in District 5 than in any other district in the past 15 years. In 2015, Gordo chaired the committee that recommended that the council raise the minimum wage to $15 in 2020. Also in 2015, Gordo led efforts to make Pasadena an early learning city, with the city establishing the Office of the Young Child, which is committed to providing youngsters and their families with access to early childhood education opportunities. “I support the legal and lawful sale of cannabis,” Gordo told the Pasadena Weekly. “I do not support the illegal sale of anything in Pasadena, whatever it may be. Take the cannabis out of there and put prescription drugs and alcohol in there and I still would not support it. He is not my constituent. He does not live or vote in my district.” In 2016, the year state voters approved the use of marijuana for recreational purposes, the City Council barred cannabis businesses from operating in Pasadena. Officials changed their tune, however, after opponents of that ordinance began collecting signatures to put a measure on the ballot that would have allowed an unlimited number of dispensaries to operate in the city. Voters approved Measure CC, which was sponsored by the city and limited the number of dispensaries in Pasadena to one per council district. Before the measure passed, city officials stated that owners of unlicensed cannabis shops who refused to close down would not be granted a license to operate. “I am elected to represent the people in my district and do the right thing when they are not present,” Gordo said. “I will continue to do the right thing. Mr. Szameit has not tricked me, and the voters should not allow him to trick them. His only connection to my district is the illegal operation that he was running and he is now facing criminal prosecution.” n

ALL-STAR JAM BAND WILD HONEY ORCHESTRA PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE KINKS AT ANNUAL AUTISM BENEFIT CONCERT AT THE ALEX THEATRE BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

O

ver the past five years, the Alex Theatre has played host to some of the most impressive concerts staged anywhere in the Los Angeles area with its series of Wild Honey Orchestra shows. Raising well over $100,000 for the Autism Think Tank’s research programs, the concerts have paid tribute to classic rock groups from the Beach Boys to Buffalo Springfield by bringing together dozens of musicians each year for a three-hour extravaganza. The money raised will help the ATT bring together a team of top autism specialists, via an Internet medical conference, to tackle the painful medical and psychological issues faced by kids like Wild Honey’s co-founder Paul Rock’s 13-year-old son, Jake, a nonverbal autistic boy with extreme digestive distress and self-injury issues. The Orchestra returns this Saturday with a special show paying tribute to The Kinks, one of the leading bands of the British Invasion of the early 1960s. Among the artists teaming up to jam on the band’s revved-up classics are guitarist Elliot Easton of The Cars, bassist/keyboardist Mike Mills of REM and drummer Jody Stephens of the legendary cult band Big Star. The show will begin with a collection of the band’s most popular songs, before the orchestra focuses on performing the band’s 1973 classic “The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society.” “I did a Wild Honey show featuring the Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’ album, and I sang ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,’” recalls Stephens, speaking from his Memphis recording studio. “It was a remarkable experience to see the community of folks who got together with that, and the level of performers was mind-blowing. They had all sorts of sound effects, and the guitar tones and horns were perfect. The attention to detail was amazing and it was a really good experience.” Stephens is personally drawn to the cause of autism research because a cousin has an autistic child, prompting him to say, “As soon as we find a remedy CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

for it, the better.” In fact, Stephens is so passionate about the cause that he helped organize another Wild Honey fundraiser at LA’s Wilshire Ebell Theatre in which performers focused on playing Big Star’s groundbreaking album titled “Third.” This time around, Stephens will be performing the Kinks song “God’s Children” alongside Linda Russell, one of his bandmates in his current group, Those Pretty Wrongs. That band began coming together in 2012, when fellow member Luther Russell met Stephens at a screening of the Big Star documentary “Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me” at the Nuart Theatre in West LA. “I’ve known Luther since 1992 and we’d touch base every now and then, but at that point I was going to LA just once a year,” Stephens recalls. “We sang Big Star songs at the screening, and both us were excited about it. We did KCRW, a performance at Amoeba, and a few other things before Luther cheerleaded me into really forming the group and recording with him. “I thought we’d get four songs, and we wound up with 12,” adds Stephens. “We did a tour of major US markets, England, Australia and more. Now we have 10 more songs and another new album. We’re off and running again, the record’s done.” Meanwhile Elliot Easton will be performing four songs that he’s choosing to keep secret so that attendees are surprised. The famed, left-handed guitarist for The Cars developed a unique sound of his own with the group’s New Wave and power-pop vibe, and has played with Creedence Cleaerwater Revisited and the Click Five since The Cars disbanded (outside of a 2011 reunion album and tour) in 1988. “My first Wild Honey show was last year with the Buffalo Springfield show, and I enjoyed it so much going up with this amazing band that they asked me back this year,” says Easton. “I was observing mostly from the sidelines in the past and decided to become part of the scene. My wife turned me on to them when the orchestra played The Band’s ‘Songs from Big Pink,’ which bummed me to miss because I know those songs like the back of my hand.” Easton is a fan and regular performer at Wild Honey’s more frequent yet informal “backyard concerts” performed throughout the city with lead vocalists including popular local figures Syd Straw and Amy Rigby. Saturday’s show brings the LA-based artist’s career full circle. “I love The Kinks, I’m a first gen Beatles fan and experienced the British Invasion when it was actually happening,” says Easton. “I’ve loved them ever since hearing ‘You Really Got Me,’ and The Cars played some shows with The Kinks. “Nothing is planned at the moment with The Cars, but that was the greatest time of my life,” says Easton, who has also donated five custom guitars from his collection to

the Nordoff Robbins Foundation, which does music therapy for autistic children. “You have to understand in a successful band, it’s never calculated. All The Cars were was five guys who all had different influences and brought different things to the band as part of the recipe. It was five of us playing [lead singer/songwriter] Ric Ocasek songs, not tunes that were fed into a computer, and they were fun lyrics that had a sense of irony. “Entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with them was one of the greatest moments of my life, incredibly exciting and an emotional experience because music goes deep in me and way back,” adds Easton. “My mother was a Juilliardtrained singer and gave me the gift of music. I’ve been playing since I was 3, and have the photos to prove it. Going from watching Elvis at age 3 in 1956 and to get to that podium choked me up thinking about my mom, and it was heavy duty. A lot of people are cynical about the Hall of Fame, it’s bullshit and doesn’t mean anything, but it was amazing to me.” Consider Mike Mills another veteran rocker amazed by the Orchestra’s shows and fundraising acumen. While he notes that he never was a “deep-diver” fan of The Kinks’ song catalogue, he’s looking forward to the challenge of playing the tunes alongside former REM associates Steve Wynn and Scott McCaughey. While REM disbanded in 2011 after 31 hugely successful years together, Mills has remained musically active with an array of projects. He plays in the group the Baseball Project with McCaughey, REM drummer Peter Buck and others, including numerous concerts and golf fundraisers for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Mills also wrote a half-hour concerto for violin, strings and “rock band” that he’s performing in shows nationwide alongside a rock band of musicians from his longtime hometown of Athens, Georgia. “The freedom to do things entirely on your own terms is pretty nice,” says Mills, referencing life after REM. “When you’re inside a giant band like that, it’s just what you do. You’re aware of your place in the world and how rare it is to stick around for 30-plus years. But you’re also just making music with your friends, the way you were when you started. There are certain constants throughout your career. “We had always worked with other people, and everyone in REM had a few side projects because they felt it was important to feel free and never wanted to be restricted in any way,” Mills continues. “There was no reason we couldn’t have fun with other people, and so I played with [supergroups] Hindu Love Gods and Golden Palominos.” ■ The Wild Honey Orchestra performs The Kinks at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale. Tickets are $30 to $110. Call (818) 243-2539 or visit alextheatre.org.

A lot of my life consists of never ending “must do’s,” particularly at the suggestion of others. That great show on Netflix you’ve recommended I watch? I’ll add it to my list, and most likely will not watch it. So you’ve started on a new book that I simply must read? I will definitely add it to my “must read” list, and likely will not. I am often overwhelmed with shows, movies, outings and meals to try, and there isn’t enough time for it all. The sheer volume of things I must do compared with the seemingly few hours a day in which to accomplish them is the real struggle. How can I possibly choose? Still, I am fortunate enough to eat and write about good food, which means I am always open to restaurants worth trying. Sierra Fusion, with its 4.5 stars on Yelp, picture-perfect Instagram feed and positive buzz amongst my friends who have dined there, was recently checked off my list. Owned by husband and wife duo Joseph Ungrue and Christina Duarte, Sierra Fusion is located on West Sierra Madre Boulevard, in Sierra Madre. They offer beautiful Asian fusion fare with unique and delicious flair. With my sister and brother-in-law in tow, we arrived an hour before closing (apologies to the staff) and were seated right away. The restaurant is very small, intimate and dimly lit, which made it all the cozier on the cold Saturday night we visited. There are countless unique items on

their menu, and it was truly difficult to decide what to order, knowing I did not have room for everything to make the cut. We started with an appetizer of their street tacos ($7-$9) that we mixed and matched — chili verde pork made with green papaya and relish topped with queso fresco, fried shrimp served with pickled slaw, salsa verde and crema, and a hard shell taco de papa (potato taco) with pickled slaw, salsa verde, crema and queso fresco. The potato taco was easily my favorite, filled with amazing flavor and a kick I wasn’t expecting but was very much welcome. Carne asada was the others’ favorite, made with citrus relish, radish and queso fresco. Surprisingly, the chili verde pork did not make the top of the list, with the salsa and toppings overpowering the meat itself and losing the essence of what the taco could have been. After tacos we were served our sushi rolls, which were as beautiful in person as they are on Instagram — no easy feat these days. We ordered the surf and turf ($18), which consists of lobster roll, cucumber, avocado, seared fillet, kizami butter, and fried shallots. All ingredients blended harmoniously, yet came through distinctly on their own. Do yourself a favor and add this to your “must-try” list if you have one — and follow through. As a lover of tempura, I couldn’t help myself from ordering the veggie crunch roll ($11) made with vegetable CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

To finish off our meal, and by recommendation of our sever who said it was his favorite dessert, we tried the warm Hawaiian bread pudding ($9) and I could not have been more surprised. I’ll admit that I generally do not enjoy bread puddingI don’t enjoy the texture or typically love the combination of flavors, but reluctantly ordered this one because the server was so enthusiastic and confident it’s the best dessert on the menu. Without trying the others and being the bread pudding cynic that I am, I’m here to tell you that it definitely is. We ordered it a la mode, and there’s no better way to describe it other than it tastes like a warm hug, ice cream and all. There is, however, a flourless chocolate brownie ($7) that is gluten-free and looks intriguing enough to give it a go next time. more satisfying to be able to delve into the fusions they have created. It wasn’t until I read that Ungrue trained in Japanese cuisine with a Filipino mother and Greek-Indian father, and Duarte trained in traditional French technique with Mexican parents, did the entire menu make sense and make me love it more. Their story and their backgrounds are poured into each dish, and work together to create a perfectly balanced and sometimes surprising menu. From their crispy rice ($11) and crispy foie ($16) to the chorizo and papa empanadas ($8) and petite chicken pot pie ($11), there is something everyone can enjoy. Soups and salads ($4-$11), pan seared scallops ($12), glazed duck ($12) served with mixed vegetables and stir fried noodles, lemon pepper wings ($8), black angus ribeye ($27), the list goes on and on. Sierra Fusion has a happy hour from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, daily specials, and an enviable wine and cocktail list. There is even a perfectly curated menu for children consisting of traditional macaroni and cheese and chicken tenders, but also a chicken teriyaki bowl served with white rice (all $7 each) making it appropriate for both date night and family night. After a wonderful experience that my family and I enjoyed, I’m glad Sierra Fusion was at the top of my list to try, and is now at the top of another: my favorites.

INSTANT FAMILY

ALLOW TIME FOR CHILDREN TO ADJUST TO A NEW PARENT

Dear Patti, My wife Gina and I have been married for eight months. Gina has two sons, Jackson, 8, and William, 4. She divorced their father 15 months ago. I do not have any children of my own. At first I was excited about my new family, but lately I’ve become discouraged. We’re supposed to be a “blended family,” but I don’t see much blending happening around here. Jackson is out of control and Gina does very little to discipline him. Jackson is angry, moody and manipulative. He clings to his mother constantly and insists that she sleep in his bedroom. I try to bond with Jackson, but he wants nothing to do with me. Gina is way overprotective of her sons, so much so that I feel like an outsider. She blames herself that Jackson is unhappy. William, on the other hand, already feels like my child. In fact, one reason I don’t want to separate with Gina is because I don’t want to lose William. He’s an awesome little kid. I don’t want to give up, as I still love Gina. But I don’t know what more to do anymore. — Christopher Dear Christopher, In the fi rst two years after a divorce it is common for the functioning level of each family member to drop. It’s often not until year three that most family members start to function within normal limits. Gina and the boys are still within that difficult two-year period and are now coping with remarriage as well. It can take years for a child to adjust to his parents living apart and to understand how their father can be “replaced.” An attempt at an instant family will meet with resistance and distress. It’s been suggested that creating a blended family will take as many years as the age of the child. It’s not unusual for the younger child to respond better to transitioning into a stepfamily. Thus, I’m not surprised that it’s taking Jackson longer to adjust than William. It’s also not uncommon for couples to have similar problems that you and Gina are having. A stepparent’s fi rst loyalty is to the partner while the biological parent’s fi rst commitment is to her or his children. At times that must leave you feeling left out, but the negotiation of the bond between you and Jackson must be carefully navigated. If Gina mainly focuses on you, her new romantic partner, and expects her son to feel the same excitement, it can have a negative effect, one in which Jackson might fear being replaced by you. Jackson is not responsible for the divorce but may be suffering the most. He has to learn to deal with the loss of an intact family, the absence of his father from his daily life, and work through feelings of anger, sorrow, confusion, powerlessness, and being torn between his parents. Please remember, Jackson did not get to decide whether, when, or how he would join a new family. I highly recommend that you seek the counsel of a professional psychotherapist trained in helping you deal with your personal feelings of disappointment, hurt, anger and hopelessness. A therapist can also support you to know how to build an atmosphere of trust, safety and respect for Jackson and the entire family. I also recommend that Jackson get psychotherapy as soon as possible to help him experience his tumultuous feelings. The therapist will listen and understand how hard it is for Jackson to adjust so quickly to so many new things. One challenge that faces blended families is that there is no standard for how to form or maintain them. Most try to replicate the traditional nuclear family model, but don’t take into account so many new stressors, such as the profound loss when homes and schools are changed, restrictions on time with each parent due to custody terms, and fi nancial stress that limits the resources of the new family. Create realistic expectations. Reassure Jackson and William that they are still in a family, even if it is different. Both you and Gina came into this marriage with high hopes. Understand that new relationships take time and that difficulties do not equal failure. Allow time for the boys to adjust to their new relationship with you, as all relationships require time for trust and stability to form. ■ Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. TOURNAMENT OF OPENNESS Free public tours of Tournament House have begun The public is invited to take a guided tour of Tournament House, the former Wrigley Mansion which has become an iconic Southern California landmark. Tours will be offered, at no cost, every Thursday at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tournament of Roses volunteers from the Heritage Committee, knowledgeable of the organization’s history and details of the house, conduct the tours. The Rose Bowl Game room renovation at Tournament House is complete and open to the public for viewing. Highlights include two new Hall of Fame touch screens, video playback of Rose Bowl Game history, depictions of Offensive and Defensive Player of the Game, a celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the 1919 Rose Bowl Game, and the B-2 flyover. Tournament House serves as the official headquarters of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, its staff and the 935 volunteer members who work year-round to organize the annual Rose Parade and Rose Bowl college football game. Located at 391 S. Orange Grove Blvd., the house was once home to chewing gum mogul William Wrigley Jr. and his wife, Ada. After Ada’s death in 1958, the Wrigley family presented the property to the city of Pasadena, with the request that it become the base of operations for the Tournament of Roses. The Wrigley family enjoyed the Rose Parade as it unfolded just beyond their front yard. Surrounding Tournament House are the Wrigley Gardens, which feature a floral display of roses, camellias and annuals. The gardens feature the All-America Rose Selections (AARS) award-winning Tournament of Roses rose developed especially for the Tournament of Roses Centennial in 1989. SMALL TOWN MAGIC Author Leif Enger discusses his new novel Tuesday at Sierra Madre Playhouse The Open Book Series presents a very special literary salon featuring Leif Enger in conversation with John Horn, host of KPCC’s “The Frame,” a radio program covering movies, music, TV, arts and entertainment. The event takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. next Thursday, Feb. 28 at the historic Sierra Madre Playhouse, located at 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Enger rose to critical acclaim in literary circles with “Peace Like a River,” which reviewers described as “high-spirited and unflagging,” and was the recipient of numerous awards. Enger was a writer and producer for the Public Radio program “Mainstreet Radio” in his home state of Minnesota. His recently released book, “Virgil Wander,” is an enchanting and timeless tale about the owner of a cinema who embarks on a journey of redemption and rediscovery with his fellow townspeople. Open Book transforms events into experiences by hosting them in locations matching the atmosphere of their corresponding books. Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, between the bustling suburbs of Pasadena and Arcadia, Sierra Madre has the quintessential feel of small-town America which makes it so strongly reminiscent of Greenstone, the town in Minnesota where “Virgil Wander” takes place. Building on the successful Pasadena Festival of Women Authors event which the nonprofit Pasadena Literary Alliance has presented annually since 2009, the vision for the Open Book series is to provide opportunities for the community to enjoy authors of all kinds — both established and emerging, national and local, men and women, writers of fiction and non-fiction —in settings that complement the author’s work or background and allow for engagement with the attendees. Tickets are $35 to $50, including a pre-program reception with beer/wine and appetizers, and a post-program of dessert, coffee and conversation. Proceeds from this nonprofit event will support the Pasadena Literary Alliance grantees. Visit pasadenaliteraryalliance.org/ open-book. n

FRESH VOICES, FRESH CHOICES ACADEMY MEMBERSHIP SHAKEUP WILL LIKELY LEAD TO SOME SURPRISING OSCAR WINS SUNDAY BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

T

imes are changing for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body of film-industry professionals responsible for nominating and then awarding Oscars each year to movies they deem most likely to stand the test of time. Following complaints about the lack of minority representation and the poor treatment of women, the academy greatly expanded its membership to include a newer, more diverse voter base. The results are dramatic, resulting in a slate of Best Picture nominees that are not only more eclectic than in years past, but also vastly more popular. And that should pay off with better than usual ratings when the awards are handed out on Sunday night. In other words, these are choices the public is actually responding to at the box office, unlike the oftenpretentious choices of years past. Here are my predictions for this year’s top categories.

BEST PICTURE Should Win: “A Star is Born.” As co-writer, director, producer, star and singer-songwriter Bradley Cooper delivered an all-time classic take on the story of a couple brought together and then torn apart by stardom and addiction. Lady Gaga matches him perfectly in one of the all-time great debut performances, yet somehow all the other bellwether awards have skipped over this. Will Win: “Roma.” It’s boring as hell, has a story that goes nowhere and its lead performance is hopelessly inert. But the threadbare story of a Mexican maid suffering through a year of hardships while working for a rich family in the 1970s will win almost entirely because it’s a chance to send a heavy-handed message to President Trump about his controversial immigration policies. Dark Horse: “Green Book.” I personally wish “BlacKkKlansman” would win due to its daringly audacious mix of comedy, thrills, and tragic history about race relations, but the Academy would easily pick the much safer “Green Book,” aka “Driving Miss Daisy” with two dudes. LEAD ACTOR Should Win: Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born.” Cooper’s heartbreaking descent into addiction and despair, even as he helps his wife conquer the CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

PW ARTS Mahershala Ali (right) in Green Book.

FRESH VOICES, FRESH CHOICES CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17 world he’s losing grip of, is pure screen poetry. But Academy voters will say he’ll have plenty of other chances, and might reward him for writing or directing anyway. Will Win: Christian Bale, “Vice.” The Academy loves actors who put on weight and tons of makeup for a role. Add in the fact that it’s a devastating look at Dick Cheney, one of American history’s most reviled figures, and this is a slam dunk. Dark Horse: Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Malek brought amazing charisma and rock-star swagger mixed with tragic sadness to his terrific performance as Queen singer Freddie Mercury. That electric mix has propelled the film to an insanely good $800 million worldwide gross. LEAD ACTRESS Should Win: Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born.” The most powerful performance of the year by anyone in any movie made the music superstar an instant movie star as well. Will Win: Glenn Close, “The Wife.” Too many Academy voters will be scared off by Gaga’s often-bizarre costumes at the Grammys and beyond, branding her a weirdo while instead giving the veteran Close the award for a histrionic performance that screams out that she’s acting! Dark Horse: Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma.” If enough Oscar voters are hell-bent on shoving a political message down viewers’ throats, this inexplicable nomination might get rewarded. Aparicio is a first-time actress, and it shows in a performance devoid of nearly any emotion or range. But playing a Mexican maid right after the president fought for a border wall might prove an irresistible allure to those who vote for sending messages over rewarding quality. SUPPORTING ACTOR Should Win: Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman.” Driver’s turn as a Jewish cop who teamed with a young black cop to bring down a KKK chapter in 1970s Colorado was alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. Will Win: Mahershala Ali, “Green Book.” Ali is an irresistibly appealing actor whom academy voters love, inside and out. The fact that this role was really a lead-level perfor18 PASADENA WEEKLY | 02.21.19

mance enabled him to be a power slugger surrounded by pinch hitters. Dark Horse: Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born.” Elliott leaps off the screen with a performance that mixes tough-guy charisma with flashes of heartbreak. The academy also loves rewarding veterans with the equivalent of lifetime achievement awards. SUPPORTING ACTRESS Should Win: Emma Stone, “The Favourite.” Hollywood loves Stone, a young actress who’s already taken home a lead statue for “La La Land” and has the chops to last for decades. Her wickedly funny performance is the best thing about this movie, but she’ll be ruined by splitting votes for the same movie against Rachel Weisz. Will Win: Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk.” The veteran King is one of Hollywood’s best and most underrated actresses, and this is the best chance to give an award to Barry Jenkins’ film, the follow-up to his Best Picture-winning “Moonlight.” Dark Horse: Amy Adams, “Vice.” Just like with Bale, the combination of Adams submerging her looks completely to portray Dick Cheney’s wife Lynne and the fact that “Vice” is a wickedly funny slam on her hated husband could make her a winner. DIRECTOR Should Win: Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman.” One of American cinema’s greatest provocateurs, Lee delivered his most daring and entertaining film yet while losing none of his bite. Will Win: Alfonso Cuaron, “Roma.” No matter how boring this movie is to averagefolks viewers, the academy is determined to shove it down the world’s throats, and they’ll reward Cuaron for giving them a perfect propaganda piece for the age of battles over the border wall. Dark Horse: Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite.” The fact that this darkest of comedies reaped 10 nominations is nothing to sneeze at. Lanthimos might sneak off with the trophy for crafting a unique vision that gets bonus points from Hollywood voters for inventing a lesbian love triangle for the actually straight Queen Anne. n

INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED IRISH ENSEMBLE LÚNASA LIVEN UP CALTECH’S BECKMAN AUDITORIUM SATURDAY

H

ere in the States, we enjoy romantic illusions of live music flourishing in pubs in Ireland — which it does, although it doesn’t necessarily follow that musicians thrive there too. According to Lúnasa flutist and whistle player Kevin Crawford, bars in towns and villages along Ireland’s Atlantic seaboard chime with music every night, and music is “very much part of the social fabric.” But the musicians are generally community members who “play for the love of playing,” as opposed to professionals who put food on the table with their music. Crawford “grew up playing traditional music for ceilidh dances” and in impromptu sessions at the local pub. “None of us thought we’d ever be doing this for a living,” he says in a cheery Irish accent, recalling his early years with Lúnasa, the widely acclaimed Irish instrumental ensemble. “That was unheard of. … We were together for 10 years before we thought, ‘We can do this,’ and we scrimped and saved and remortgaged houses.” He estimates there are only “maybe 15 to 20 gigs” in proper concert-type settings in Ireland that hard-working tradi-

tional bands like Lúnasa could do in a year. Luckily, Lúnasa enjoys a strong following in America. Crawford, who moved to New York four years ago, and Uilleann pipe-playing bandmate Cillian Vallely, who’s lived there for two decades, also do a biennial duo tour (which brought them to Coffee Gallery Backstage last month) — purely an excuse, Crawford wisecracks, to escape East Coast winters. This Saturday at Caltech, Crawford, Vallely, guitarist Ed Boyd, Florida-based fiddler Colin Farrel, and double bassist Trevor Hutchinson will perform some tunes from Lúnasa’s 2018 album “Cas,” as well as material from earlier in their 20-year career. “Cas” was an inspired departure for the instrumental ensemble: they invited friends Eric Bibb, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Daoirí Farrell, Natalie Merchant, and Tim O’Brien to sing. The vocal collaborations charge the music with fresh energy, and Crawford describes the recording sessions fondly (although he admits he has “no idea” whether they’ll record another album with singers). But onstage, Lúnasa’s novocalists premise allows greater

freedom to improvise arrangements. With new compositions, once each player identifies some element to work with — or as Crawford puts it, “there’s a bit of major potatoes for everyone” — they weave together arrangements that can be remarkably elastic and spirited in performance, exploring “more melancholy, more soulful melodies” that would normally be a singer’s province. Crawford points out that many of their signature tunes are arranged with harmonies and “an introduction, a middle eight, an outro and a whole theme, like a song.” They have not refashioned vocal tracks from “Cas” as instrumentals. Fans who embraced “Cas” still turn out for the band’s live instrumental show. “I think we were doing it for so long that people are not disappointed now that they know we have an album with singers,” Crawford observes. “We loved having those singers. But the Lúnasa gig is still the Lúnasa gig.” n Pasadena Folk Music Society presents Lúnasa at Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium, 332 S. Michigan Ave., Pasadena, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23; $30. MICHAEL HAGGINS BAND PERFORMS ‘THE SOUL OF RAGTIME’ IN PLAYHOUSE COURTYARD

IN A CONCERT TITLED “THE SOUL OF RAGTIME,” IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE PASADENA PLAYHOUSE PRODUCTION OF “RAGTIME,” THE MICHAEL HAGGINS BAND PERFORMS A FREE CONCERT IN THE PLAYHOUSE COURTYARD FRIDAY NIGHT. The revered bassist and songwriter plays a blend of smooth jazz, R&B and funk. His music is inspired by the likes of Stanley Clarke, the Isley Brothers, Earth, Wind & Fire and George Duke, among others. Haggins was born into a musical family. His uncle, Al Duncan was a top session drummer who was among those known as “the grandfathers of groove” in the 1950s and ’60s, and it was he who encouraged Haggins to take a musical career seriously. After trying other instruments, he settled on electric bass at age 10. He went on to study jazz at Pasadena City College, and in the 1980s performed with future charttopper Robbie Nevil. Haggins worked with various other acts until forming his own band back in 2000. He began recording on his own label, Cuate Records. He’s released several CDs, and his band performs extensively around Southern California, promoting the gospel of laid-back, West Coast jazz. OUR NATIVE DAUGHTERS, Songs of Our Native Daughters (Smithsonian Folkways/ African American Legacy Recordings): HHHH½

Honest, searing Americana from Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla, and Birds of Chicago’s Allison Russell, who revisit slave narratives and construct deep, textured tales around themes of racism, resistance and hope. Banjo’s abundant — all four women play, as does superb producer Dirk Powell — alternately haunting and joyful. Highlights: the cello- and harmony-lifted “You’re Not Alone,” Giddens’ chilling “Mama’s Cryin’ Long,” and Russell’s piercing “Quasheba, Quasheba,” inspired by an ancestor sold into slavery: “Raped and beaten, your babies taken/ Starved and sold and sold again/ Ain’t you a woman of love deservin’/ …Born of your bone, by the grace of your strength we have life.” folkways.si.edu/ songs-of-our-native-daughters

ALICIA OLATUJA, Intuition: Songs From the Minds of Women (Resilience): HHH½ Olatuja’s vocal clarity and soaring range commanded attention in performance at President Barack Obama’s 2013 inauguration. Subsequent recordings emphasized the jazz stylist’s warmth and interpretive skills, as does this diversely sourced, aptly titled collection of songs by women composers, including Tracy Chapman, Imogen Heap and Joni Mitchell. The relatively spare arrangement of Sade’s “No Ordinary Love” doesn’t stray far from the original’s hypnotic groove, but complements Olatuja’s yearning treatment of the lyric, while harmonies supplant synths and emphasize the humanity of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work.” aliciaolatuja.com

Taking Flight CATHY RICHARDSON CELEBRATES A DECADE AS THE POWERFUL VOICE OF JEFFERSON STARSHIP BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

Since taking flight in 1965 in its original incarnation as Jefferson Airplane, the band Jefferson Starship has created one of the most distinctive song catalogs in rock music history. Starting with psychedelic-era classics such as “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love,” through 1970s rockers like “Jane” and melodic diversions like “Miracles,” on through their 1980s chart-toppers “We Built This City” and “Sara,” the band was led by the distinctively powerful vocals of Grace Slick. When Slick retired from the band in the late ’90s, the band fell into several conflicting legal battles over the ownership of its name and its musical direction. But in 2008, sole original member David Freiberg hired Cathy Richardson — who had played legendary rock diva Janis Joplin in “Love, Janis” off-Broadway — to handle the female lead vocals, resulting in a remarkable renaissance for the group. The band will perform Saturday night at The Rose in Pasadena, one of 70 annual dates the band plays nationwide. As Richardson points out, the band is in the midst of a creative resurgence that is reuniting them with past members while creating their first new music in decades. “We’re making a new CD, and so far it’s an EP with six songs, just because we’re anxious to get something out,” says Richardson, speaking from her home in the Chicago suburbs. “We’re excited by how it’s coming together, because Jefferson Starship’s original bassist Pete Sears is playing on it and about to join us on the road soon. “We’re also thrilled because we played a new song called ‘What Are We Waiting For’ for Grace and she cried because she was so proud of it,” adds Richardson. “It sounded classic and current and I said ‘you can get in on this, send me some lyrics.’ She got excited and with the new women’s movement happening, we wrote a real women power anthem, saying it’s time for women to run things, give us a chance.” Richardson and Slick have had a positive relationship throughout her decade-long tenure with the band, with Slick inviting Richardson to sing in her place when the band received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys. She had made a name for herself previously with her 2001 turn as Joplin off-Broadway and

subsequent national tour, and by singing with Joplin’s original band Big Brother and the Holding Co. on their recent national tours as well. “Yes, I had gigantic shoes to fill in taking over for Grace, but I’m just crazy enough to think that I can do it,” says Richardson. “I had experience stepping into the shoes of a legend, and I knew that criticism is inevitable. I’m not that person and am never going to be. But the fact that Grace herself approved of what I’m doing and said I’m one of her favorite singers in the world, I’m honored. “Janis was fire and Grace is ice. She had that intensity coming through her eyes a lot,” adds Richardson. “If you looked at her in the front row you might pee in your pants, she’s so intense. There’s a different weirdness with Grace that I love because I’m kind of weird too. Singing without a guitar you have to figure out what to do with yourself, I got more into stalking the stage interacting with people, eating their food or sipping their drink during shows. [Former Jefferson Starship member Paul Kantner] said ‘You know all that weird stuff you do? Do more.’ It’s like a playground, it’s fun.” That sense of fun leads to dynamic shows that include a surprising number of twentysomethings in the audience at shows like the band’s last Rose performance to a packed house last August. Seeing Richardson command the stage alongside the 80-year-old Freiberg as he rips guitar solos and belts out intense lead vocals of his own is an impressive sight to behold. “I definitely think that kids today are going back to the old classics, and the reason the classics don’t die, is there was something magic about them and now it’s so hard to sift through all that’s out there now,” says Richardson. “I watched the Grammys the other night and I was wondering who many of them were. A lot of times we get a multigenerational crowd, but young people are bringing their grandfathers rather than vice versa. It really can keep going forever as long as there are people who want to see this music live and really see people playing real instruments.” n Jefferson Starship performs at 9 p.m. Saturday at The Rose, 245 E. COLD PURSUIT

Stars: Liam Neeson, Laura Dern Length: 119 minutes Directed by: Hans Petter Moland Rating: R Liam Neeson marks his 11th movie in a decade as an ass-kicking vigilante, this time putting a darkly humorous "Fargo" twist on it to great effect. He and director Moland find ever more inventive ways to bring the baddies down, and action fans' spirits up. Grade: A

GLASS

Stars: Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy Length: 129 minutes Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan Rating: PG13 A hybrid sequel to both “Unbreakable” and “Split,” “Glass” fulfills fanboy fantasies. All three leads are terrific as mortal enemies Willis and Jackson have to contend with the unstoppable monster criminal The Horde, played by James McAvoy, in a battle of wits and later brawn while kept under the mysterious watch of a shady psychiatrist. Grade: A

‘Fighting’ Chance

PRO WRESTLING BIOPIC ‘FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY’ IS BETTER THAN EXPECTED, THANKS TO COMEDY LEGEND STEPHEN MERCHANT

N

one of us gets the chance to choose the family we’re born into. The new movie “Fighting With My Family” shines a light on a particularly unusual one — the hardscrabble, working-class British family that served up pro wrestling’s top league, the WWE, with a female superstar, Paige. Detailing the story of Paige and how she and her family struggled yet held together in loving support during her arduous rise to fame, “Family” is terrific entertainment for teens and adults and a great movie for family members of those age ranges to see together. Paige (Florence Pugh) is the teen daughter with two brothers, Zak and Nick, in a unique working-class family that runs its own low-rent wrestling league in a run-down area of England. They watch WWE wrestling from America regularly and dream of sending Paige and Zak to the States to wrestle there. But a sad reality has already affected them — the oldest son, Nick, is spending years in prison for a violent drug-fueled rampage he went on after being rejected at a WWE audition years before. Paige and Zak nonetheless submit their videos regularly, hoping for an audition, until one night they get a call telling them to come out as the American talent scout and coach Hutch (Vince Vaughn) is coming to London. They excitedly attend, and even more excitedly bump into Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (who executive produces the movie) and receive encouragement from him to become their own star creation: “Don’t be the next Rock. Be the first you.” In a brutal yet funny audition, a big group of hopefuls face off against each other, but in the end Hutch only picks Paige. Her brother Zak is devastated and, facing a continued life of hardship with his pregnant girlfriend, spirals into depression and loses his sense of purpose in helping poor young kids avoid street trouble through wrestling lessons in the family’s academy. Paige heads for her new challenge: facing off against dozens more people in America for the final cut prior to making it in the WWE’s biggest matches. Along the way, she faces particularly fierce opposition from four blonde Americans who she believes hate her — but winds up learning lessons in empathy and teamwork along the way. “Fighting With My Family” is a surprisingly vibrant and ex-

tremely entertaining film, far better than one would have any right to expect when hearing that it’s about the life of a pro wrestler. The reason for this is not only the terrific performance of Pugh in the lead — a star-making turn that’s funny and fierce, yet emotionally affecting when it needs to be — but the fact that it’s written and directed by Stephen Merchant, who is widely considered a comedic genius for co-creating the British version of the classic sitcom “The Office.” Merchant knows how to make all manner of people come to life in a deeply human way, and then find the funny in them as individuals. He digs deep into the financial struggles and personal pains of Paige’s family, where her father (Nick Frost) is a former convicted thief and her mother (Lena Headey) was a drug abuser until love with her husband straightened her out. Thus, with all the life pitfalls surrounding Paige as she sees one brother in prison and another facing life as an unexpected young father, the movie makes the stakes incredibly real and huge for the young dreamer. This gives the audience a tremendous amount of rooting interest for her that matches the spirit of the best sports underdog movies like “Rocky.” Vince Vaughn nearly steals the movie with his best and funniest performance in years as the fast-talking coach. Combined with an impressively slimmed-down physique, he looks and acts nearly as great as he did in his 1996 debut with “Swingers,” and this should be a very big comeback for the actor. The movie does feature a fair amount of mid-level foul language throughout, but no “F” words, while also having several crude taunts that involve sex or bodily functions. But these are mitigated by the fact that all fit the context of the characters’ rough lives and limited formal educations. The violence is all of the toss-about wrestling variety and there’s no sex on or off screen, so overall this is a movie most should not be offended by, while serving up healthy doses of positive lessons in family, forgiveness, teamwork, empathy for strangers, and entrepreneurship paying off. n

THE FAVOURITE

Stars: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz Length: 119 minutes Directed by: Yorgos Lanthimos Rating: R This twisted, wildly original historical comedy makes England’s Queen Anne secretly gay, while following the battle of wits and bodies between her prime assistant and a ruthless maid who will stop at no trick to come out on top. The film looks gorgeous, is shockingly funny, and the three Oscar-nominated actresses are clearly having a blast. So will you. Grade: A

THE UPSIDE

Stars: Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston, Nicole Kidman Length: 126 minutes Directed by: Neil Burger Rating: PG13 This incredibly inspiring dramedy kicks the new movie year off right, as Kevin Hart plays a struggling man whose life changes when he becomes the caretaker for a paralyzed millionaire with a death wish - and winds up restoring his will to live. Terrific performances, and filled with laughs and (no pun intended) heart. Grade: A

VICE

Stars: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell Length: 132 minutes Directed by: Robert Zemeckis Rating: R Bale is utterly amazing in this off-the-wall biopic of Dick Cheney, who manipulated his way into having more power than any Vice President in history. Writer-director McKay brought the 2008 financial meltdown to vibrant Oscar-winning life in "The Big Short" and makes this nearly as engaging. Grade: B

NOTICE OF PUBIC HEARING Zoning Code Amendment Relating to Regulation of Adult Businesses PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The last time the adult business provisions in the Pasadena Municipal Code were updated was 2006. Changes in the law that applies to adult businesses, and in the adult business industry itself, require an update and modernization of the PMC sections that govern these uses. Accordingly, amendments are being proposed to the adult business provisions in Title 17 (Zoning Code) as well as Title 5 of the Municipal Code. PROJECT LOCATION: All properties within the City of Pasadena. ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: The Planning Commission will consider whether adoption of the proposed Zoning Code Amendment is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) under Section 15061(b)(3), the ìgeneral ruleî that CEQA applies only to projects which have the potential for causing a signifi cant effect on the environment, and that where it can be seen with certainty that there is no possibility that the activity in question may have a signifi cant effect on the environment, the activity is not subject to CEQA. Since the proposed activity would not expand the locations in which these land uses may locate beyond what is currently allowed, there is no possibility that the amendments will have a signifi cant effect on the environment.
