Police Volunteers Set Annual Rummage Sale comm. spotlight

Since it was founded, the Mesa Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association has done its best to support the city’s law enforcement personnel. “We’re a group of police volunteers who have completed the Mesa Citizen Police Academy, which has been going on for about 20 years,” said Sally Donohue, a longtime member. “We continue to voluntarily help in a number of capacities. For instance, if they’re having a bicycle rodeo or a VIN-etching event, we’re right there with several helping hands. We also donate money.” To further its cause, the association hosts an annual massive rummage sale at Donohue’s home at 2323 E. June St., Mesa. This year, it will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7. Donohue and her fellow alumni invite the public to donate items to sell. “We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit,” she said. “We can give a tax-deductible form, if they wish to do that. On the day of the rummage sale, we encourage them to come by and buy something. Usually we find a good home for anything that’s left over. It doesn’t go in the trash.” So far, the association has seen a number of donations ranging from dishes and knickknacks to furniture and music boxes. classifieds

The group uses its funds to help the families of fallen or injured officers. “If it’s a Mesa officer, we donate to the 100 Club as well as to the family directly,” she said. “If it is anyone else in the Valley, we donate to the 100 Club.” The group meets monthly and has a nominal membership fee. For more information, visit www.mesacpaaa. org. The next session of the Citizen Police Academy will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesdays Feb. 18 through April 29. There is one Saturday class that is held at the range. For more information, visit www.mesaaz. gov/police/training/cpacademy.aspx.

We checked out the Red Mountain Country Club Farmers Market in January. What a quaint surprise! Besides the fresh vegetables and meat, it boasts the Gilbert Olive Oil, which served us delicious samples of jalapeno well as chocolate homes looking back olive oil asexpensive raspberry balsamic vinaigrette, which we just had to buy. Check out www. gilbertoliveoil.com. Pampered Chef is also there offering kitchenware. Check out Red Mountain Ranch Country Club’s website—www.rmrcc.com—for complete details about the event held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors commemorated the career of Dr. George Smith, superintendent of Mesa Public Schools from 1967 to 1984. The father of former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith died last year from injuries suffered in a fall at his home. “Dr. Smith built an amazing foundation of learning in Mesa as he constantly worked to improve our education system and open the doors of opportunity for our younger generations,” said Steve Chucri, chairman of the Board of Supervisors. “It is most appropriate that we take time to honor someone who dedicated so much to the residents of Arizona.” Phoenix-based Fox Restaurant Concepts has sold its nine Sauce pizzerias in the Valley and Tucson, including locations in Chandler and Mesa. The buyer is a group headed by Scott Kilpatrick, one of the original founders of Ra Sushi, which was launched in Scottsdale in 1997. Restaurateur Sam Fox’s portfolio includes Zinburger, True Food Kitchen, Culinary Dropout, Wildflower, Olive & Ivy and Flower Child.
Mesa Public Schools honored its students of the month—Israel Bernal Casimiro, Emerson Elementary; Berkley Earle, Wilson Elementary; Kealen Heinz, Kino Junior High; Jesus Mejia, Hawthorne Elementary; Gideon Sayre, Stevenson Elementary; and Lauren Steinhoff, Red Mountain High School. Speaking of Mesa Public Schools, the governing board voted this year’s president and clerk. Dr. Ben Whiting will serve as the 2015 governing board president, while Steven Peterson was elected as board clerk. Remaining members include Mike Nichols, Jenny Richardson and Ben Smith. It doesn’t matter who played in the Super Bowl because Emerald Park came up a winner. The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, in partnership with Verizon and the NFL, planted trees at the park. Tree plantings are a permanent legacy that contribute to the “greening” of each Super Bowl. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Super Bowl Urban Forestry Program. Mesa East is looking forward to its Mesa East Amazing Arts and Quilts Show, which features a rock and gem show, quilts display, pencils and pigments art and other items for sale. The free event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Mesa East Community Club House, 225 S. 74th St., Mesa.
D-vine is hosting a Santa Barbara Road Trip from Monday, March 16, to Thursday, March 19. Wine lovers will rejoice in the choice for Wednesday, March 18: touring wineries or playing a round of golf. Golf is not included but D-vine will leverage a golf package for the group. To read up on the trip, visit bit. ly/1CoZNb4.

The City’s Development and Sustainability Department is offering a series of free monthly classes for residents and contractors regarding City codes and requirements. They are known as “Clyde on Codes” because they are taught by Mesa Senior Building Inspector Clyde Spillers. The next few classes will be held at 9 a.m.: • Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Home Depot, 425 S. Val Vista Dr. • Saturday, March 14, at the Home Depot, 6708 E. McKellips Rd. Classes are based on various sections of the building codes, such as plumbing, electrical and fire safety. Classes will also focus on the permitting process and topics specific to certain demographics, such as the
more common winter visitor construction issues. Implementation of “Clyde on Codes” or a code education series was an idea submitted to the City’s Team INNOV8 program for ideas that make a difference. As the economy continues to recover from the recession, the City has seen a significant increase in construction activity. However, due to “contractor flight” of the most experienced and capable contractors moving out of the area during the recession, City inspectors are dealing with a less experienced pool of contractors. This has led to inspectors writing more corrections and performing multiple inspections, resulting in a greater demand on staff time.

Telephones for Mesa looking back
Gridiron
Telephone service came to Mesa in 1902, when Consolidated Telephone Co. set up the first telephone switchboard in the back of Petersen’s Grocery at the corner of Main Street and Macdonald. Mesa had less than 800 residents at the time, and its first operator was Laura Burtt. She was so familiar with residents that she would recognize callers’ voices. She located spouses, ordered wood and found doctors, among other tasks. One Tempe physician, Dr. B.B. Moeur, made the 35-mile buggy trip to Mesa whenever required. The first long-distance call came from California in April 1906 to relay the news of the devastating San Francisco earthquake and fire. By 1924, when the telephone company was called Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph, there were only 780 telephones in Mesa. Thirty-five years later,

the city hit the 1,000-telephone mark and growth accelerated. Local switchboards were phased out after 1949, when direct-dial service became available. Mountain States was later acquired by Mountain Bell. Mesa was one of the first U.S. cities to have direct long-distance dialing in 1956. By 1971, an electronic switching system was installed at 4755 E. University Dr. to bring residents the most sophisticated telephone service available.

I was taking notes and I still was left trying to keep track of it all, from enrobing cream centers in molten chocolate, to the elaborate moldmaking process for candies like the French mint truffles and the larger novelty chocolate items; to the whimsical, upwardly spiraling track, almost a mile long, that keeps chocolates at exactly 48 degrees for 36 minutes, where workers release the chocolates by hand. You know Science Channel’s “How It’s Made?” Cerreta’s tour is like that, only much tastier. At the end, we opted to make chocolate “pizzas,” which is probably most kids’ favorite part of the trip. To top it all off, each chef receives a bottle of “cheese”—melted white chocolate. My son made a masterpiece consisting of just about every topping he could fit on his pizza. We sealed up our pizzas, browsed the tantalizing retail section and ogled the giant chocolate football, chocolate cactus, Rice Krispies Easter bunny and more before leaving. Hanging Stuffed Animal Display diy

events calendar
I’ve noticed over the last few years that my children prefer having their stuffed animals all over the floor where they can see them instead of in the fancy organizers I’ve bought them. It drives me crazy to help them clean their rooms, only to find a stuffed tsunami waiting for me the next time I go in their rooms. I wanted to figure out a fun way to display all of their animals that was still easy to use. A few laps around Lowe’s helped me find what I needed to put together a fun solution to this constant irritation. law talk

Ingredients: expensive homes One roll of pre-made garden fence Two heavy-duty shelf brackets Heavy-duty drywall anchors Fancy duct tape Tools: Hammer, screwdriver or power drill, pliers (wire cutters if needed)
looking back
Step 1 Because I have two kids, I bought the longer, 15foot roll of garden fence and used wire cutters to cut the roll in half to make two displays. Choose one end of the fence as the bottom and use the pliers to twist the wires together and back on themselves, then cover with duct tape. (If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can cover all of the wires with duct tape for a cute effect.) Remove one of the wooden slats from the top to free up more wire for hanging. Step 2 Using a ladder or step stool, hang the fencing against the wall you will be mounting it to in order to determine how far up the wall you will need to place the shelf brackets and mark the distance between the two as well as the height. Using the drywall anchors, attach the shelf brackets as directed on their instructions. Step 3 Wrap the long wires at the top of your display through the mounting holes in the shelf brackets, bending them back on themselves and over the ends of the brackets to secure them in place. Use more duct tape to cover the ends of the wires as they can be sharp. Step 4 After reminding your kids not to swing from their new stuffed animal display, help them hang the animals in different poses. Some had their heads shoved through the gaps, others were hung from arms or from legs, the result being a virtual circus of stuffed toys doing stunts up my kids’ walls. I am happy to report that it has been almost a month since I put these up and the animals have largely remained on their new perch. Problem solved!

Eight Tips to Save on Valentine’s Day mom cents

You want to express your love, but you don’t want to hurt your wallet by doing so. Never fear! You can be frugally minded and still have an enjoyable Valentine’s Day. Check out the tips below for ways to save. photo page

Cards If your kids are handing out cards at school, look at buying packs of smaller cards rather than individual cards that will cost more. You may also want to check the dollar stores for discount cards. There are also many free printable Valentine’s Day cards that you can make yourself. If you are mailing cards, send postcards, which have less postage than cards with envelopes. You can also send free eCards to long-distance loved ones (try www.BlueMountain.com for one example).

Dinner The easiest way to save is to dine at home or have a picnic, but if you feel like going out there are a few things you can do to save. Look for deals on local restaurants on www. groupon.com, www.LivingSocial. com or www.restaurants.com. Move the date. Celebrating after the 14th can save you a headache from the crowd and any higher rates that may be charged. If you want to celebrate on that day, try going for lunch rather than dinner. Skip the wine. Alcohol is expensive and can increase your chances of spending more. If you want to celebrate with a bottle, pick one up at the store and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home. You’ll easily save at least 50 percent on the bottle. Happy Saving!
Flowers Roses tend to go up in price (up to double) around Valentine’s Day. Seasonal flowers will be much less expensive. You can also mix up the colors, sizes and types of flowers to create a unique bouquet that costs less. Check larger retailers like Costco, Sam’s Club and Walmart for flowers. They buy flowers in bulk, and pass the savings onto the costumer. Potted plants are also a less expensive option that will last longer than a week or two. You save money and your loved one continues to enjoy your present.

Reader Comments As most of you know, we began publishing this map a couple of months ago. Suffice it to say it has been very popular with readers, some of their comments we thought you might find interesting. Read on... Dear Nearby News, I think your community map is a great idea and expect that many people will review it. I would like to add two locations of H&R Block Tax Offices in the area for the benefit of those who might need help with their taxes or with the tax impact of the ACA insurance on their tax returns. The offices are located at the south end of the Safeway store at McKellips and Power, and on the west side of Walmart at Greenfield and McKellips. Thank you for providing this information for the public. —Bob H. Tell us what you think about the map! Email the Nearby News at mapit@nearbynews.com.

Ceviche
It’s healthful, light and refreshing— just the type of recipe we’re all looking for this time of year. Ceviche, a citrus-based marinated seafood appetizer or light meal, is perfectly prepared with this version, the right blend of smooth flavors with a big kick of cayenne and roasted jalapenos. I got this recipe from Michael Garcia, executive chef of Fleming’s Steakhouse & Wine Bar in Chandler. He often makes this Garcia family favorite for his kitchen staff and I was lucky enough to be there the day he was stirring up a fresh bowl full. “My grandmother, Nana Lena, originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, made this as a neutral recipe, meaning it’s designed to add as much or as little heat as you want, and it’s still wonderful,” Garcia said. He added that his Nana Lena knew seafood, and she taught him to blend it into perfection with this dish!
As a young boy, Garcia would ride his bicycle almost every day to his Nana’s house and watch her prepare traditional Mexican dishes. “Nana would say, ‘Michael, are you hungry?’ Are you kidding? I was always hungry!” Garcia recalled. “I’d stand there in the kitchen and watch her make my favorite things like homemade corn and flour tortillas and ceviche!” Thankfully, this recipe has no chance of being forgotten. Garcia has begun a new tradition with his four sons. They make Nana Lena’s ceviche every Sunday—especially during football season. “We prep it together and the first bowl is ready by the beginning of the second game,” he said. It’s so good, chef, mine won’t last through the first commercial of the first game! Gracias, Nana Lena!
Chef Michael Garcia’s Ceviche (Party or large family size)
2 lbs. (about 70-90) small uncooked shrimp 1 (28 oz.) can baby clams with juice 3/4 cup lime juice (approx. 3-4 large limes) 4 medium jalapenos, roasted and diced fine 3 cups cucumbers, peeled and diced 1 cup red onion, diced 2 cups fresh tomato, seeded and diced 2 cups celery, diced 3 tablespoons kosher salt 1 1/2 tablespoons black pepper 2 tablespoons chile powder 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or less if you desire less heat) 2 cups ketchup 5 cups Clamato juice 1 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped fine avocado for garnish 2 cups jack cheese, shredded (optional)

pepper directly over the flame using tongs. Turn peppers until skin bubbles up and blackens, about 1 to 2 minutes. For oven broiler method, place peppers in a shallow sheet pan. Broil on high heat until bubbling and blackening occurs. Follow same method for grilling indoors or outdoors. When blackened, remove skin and dice. Add to remainder of ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate ceviche for at least four to five hours to allow seafood to marinate. Ceviche is done when shrimp is pink. Just before serving, top with slices or a few pieces of chopped avocado for garnish. Serve with saltine crackers or tortilla chips and top with jack cheese, if desired, to reduce heat from peppers. Jan’s Note: If you prefer a less spicy ceviche, start with a little less jalapeno peppers, chili and cayenne. Add as needed to your desired taste. February 2015

Rosa’s Mexican Grill at Mesa Drive and University has been a staple in the city’s culinary scene for years. The family-owned restaurant has opened a second location called Hacienda de Rosa’s. Husband and wife team Karma and Jim Gifford, their daughter Chaney Lucas and son-in-law Cory Lucas own the new Rosa’s and each has contributed to the restaurant’s opening in a different way. “We just got a phone call saying the property had become available and would we be interested and we said yes. There were a lot of interested parties from what we understand,” said Karma Gifford, the general manager at Hacienda de Rosa’s. Jim Gifford is the business manager and responsible for higher-level business decisions. “We’re going to be the first Mexican restaurant on Mars,” said Jim with a laugh. comm. spotlight

“We do have flying saucers,” Karma added matterof-factly. “It’s one of our menu items.” The massive tostada includes meat, beans, lettuce, cheese, fresh salsa fresco, sour cream and guacamole; and it’s big enough to share. The Hacienda de Rosa’s team purchased equipment and new tables and chairs, and redecorated the restaurant, which was formerly Tia Rosa’s Taquiera. All the employees are new as well. Karma said she brought head chef Eduardo Ceron to the East Mesa location from the original Rosa’s. “We are listening to the customers and what they want here,” Karma said. “We’re finding there are some differences in taste and people here like it a little spicier.” All food is made fresh. Housemade beans, salsa and sauces are prepared fresh daily, and meats are marinated for 24 hours before being served. meet your neighbor

When a Billion Dollars Is Not Enough law talk
meet your neighbor
Sue Ann Arnall recently received and cashed a $975 million check from her soonto-be ex-husband, oil magnate Harold Hamm. She claims Scott R. Rowley that the check was not enough to adequately compensate her for the couple’s estimated $18 billion holdings, which were amassed during their marriage of more than 20 years. Her exact words were that this check was merely a “small portion.” Although few people will ever be lucky enough to have such a problem, Arizona law would agree with her position. As a community property state, Arizona divides community property equitably. In cases where there are assets that may be difficult to value, such as businesses, the valuation process is very important. Often such a case will involve expert witnesses to give the court guidance on the valuation. Business appraisals, in particular, are expensive and time consuming. Arizona biz box
uses different methods of valuation depending on the type of business and other factors, so it is vital to have an attorney and expert who understand this area of law. Receiving a large distribution of community property can have major impacts in the areas of child support and spousal maintenance as well. Although typically these are controlled by the income of each party, where there is a large distribution, the courts will consider capital as an income source. If you or a loved one is in need of legal advice, please call (480) 833-1113 and one of the family law attorneys at Rowley Chapman & Barney will be happy to discuss your personal situation with you.

Sweet News: The Girl Scout Cookie Dessert Challenge is Back By Alison Bailin Batz
The Girl Scouts Arizona CactusPine Council is bringing back its award-winning Girl Scout Cookie Dessert Challenge. For the second year in a row, chefs from some of the state’s most popular restaurants—including several in the Southeast Valley—will use their culinary prowess to reimagine one of the beloved flavors of Girl Scouts’ cookies—Do-Do-SiDos, Samoas Tagalongs, Thin Mints, Trefoils and a new flavor, Rah Rah Raisins—into a custom dessert menu item. Each restaurant has agreed to feature its dessert on its menu through Feb. 28, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the transformation of the local council’s Camp Sombrero into a Leadership Center for Girls and Women. Among the participating restaurants in the area, and their creative desserts are: Restaurant: Blue Wasabi in Gilbert Chef/Dessert Designer: Christian Palomares Dessert: Tempura Thin Mint Ice Cream Restaurant: CHoP in Chandler Chef/Dessert Designer: Grant Gates Dessert: Tagalong Shortbread Restaurant: Grimaldi’s in Gilbert and Chandler Chef/Dessert Designer: Cory Lattuca Desserts: Chocolate Thin Mint

In addition to benefiting from the dessert challenge, a portion of the council proceeds from all local 2015 Girl Scout cookie sales will benefit the Camp Sombrero project. The transformation of Camp Sombrero is one of the local council’s objectives as part of its overarching Campaign for Girls in Arizona. Over the course of almost two decades, Steve has enjoyed getting to know many of his customers and watching their children grow up, becoming drivers and—in some cases— becoming customers, too. “We get a lot of repeat business, and I’ve seen many kids grow up over the years and some of them now even have their own children,” Steve said. Steve’s focus on family extends beyond his many regular customers; the Maaco shops are true DeBoer family affairs. In addition to working closely with his dad, John, who is president of operations, Steve’s mom, Lynn, is secretary and treasurer, his brother, Jeff, is production manager, and Steve’s wife, Cindy, helps out in the front office. “Because we are a family-run company, we are all involved in the dayto-day business, and have been for the past 20 years,” Steve said. Maaco specializes in automobile and truck painting and collision repairs on domestic and foreign vehicles of any age.

“We work on cars from old to new, and at the Mesa location we also do RV and large equipment painting,” Steve said. Steve said being part of a familyowned and -operated business allows the staff to really focus on their customers and work as a team to provide top-notch customer service. “We strive to give each customer high quality work for an affordable price. We really try to offer a wonderful and unique customer experience,” Steve said. Although working so closely with many of his family members can be challenging, Steve said that he truly enjoys working so closely with everyone. “There are some ups and downs, but overall it’s worked out really well.” Steve also likes the way no two days at Maaco are exactly the same. “Working with customers just makes it different from day to day. I just really like meeting new people, and it’s nice to take older cars that are not in the greatest of shape and fix them and get happy customers.” Maaco is located at 3113 E. Main St. in Mesa and 1992 E. University Dr. in Tempe. For more information, call (480) 924-9280 or visit www.maaco. com. February 2015

This local knowledge means that when they are working with clients who have recently relocated to the East Valley, Hershey and Franklin can offer advice on neighborhoods, schools and more. Hershey was a teacher in the area for 14 years and coaches baseball, and Franklin’s kids attended Red Mountain High School. “We also use our own money to buy fix and flips, so we also sell homes that are our own,” Hershey said. This experience gives him and Franklin a unique perspective on which home improvements offer sellers the most bang for their buck. “We know where the sellers should spend their money, and we also have a group of qualified people we can refer them to for those improvements.” For example, if a home seller wants to repaint some rooms before putting
