WHAT DO I DO PRIOR TO TRANSFERRING ?
lmost half of the students attending one of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges say they intend to transfer to a university. In the 2007-08 academic year, more than 5,800 Maricopa students entered one of the state universities as a new transfer student. Over 80 percent of those went to Arizona State University. That same year, almost 25,000 of all the undergraduates enrolled at the state universities were transfer students from one of the Maricopa colleges. What do Maricopa transfer students study at the university? The top five majors are the following: business-related fields, education, health and clinical sciences, psychology and biological/biomedical sciences. Most of these transfer students perform very well academically and go on to earn a bachelor’s degree. In academic year 2006-07, the latest year that data is available, the state universities awarded bachelor’s degrees to more than 6,000 Maricopa transfer students. And private universities in the state awarded another 1,500 bachelor’s degrees to former Maricopa students.

COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS Maricopa’s transfer agreements are on behalf of the district as a whole, and courses taken at any of the Maricopa Community Colleges are equally transferable to private, public and international baccalaureate degree-granting institutions. The following is a general timeline to assist you in planning your transfer. It’s never too early to begin planning. It is recommended that you: • Declare your intent to transfer when you begin transfer coursework; • Aim to finalize your choice of major and university by the time you have earned 24 credits.

• Find out which universities offer majors that interest you. • Investigate possible transfer institutions that offer your intended program(s) – by desired features (i.e., cost, location, size, services, distance learning). • Consult with Maricopa Community College’s advising, faculty, counseling and career center personnel/resources to assist you with choosing your major. • Learn more about general education requirements and lower-division requirements. • Begin looking for scholarships, discounts and other ways to meet costs. • Pay attention to required course sequencing and GPA requirements for your program.

• Solidify your choice of academic major or area of study and narrow down your transfer institutions. • Learn about admission requirements, and investigate program-specific selection criteria and requirements such as auditions or portfolios. • Continue selecting courses that transfer appropriately within your program of study. • Submit your applications for admission and financial aid along with all of your official transcripts, AP and CLEP test scores (if you have any) and immunization records. • File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) depending upon the priority dates of the universities you are considering. • Talk with advisors and academic professionals at your transfer institution – call ahead for an appointment. Find out if orientation is required and keep abreast of changes in program requirements. • See your community college advisor to check your eligibility to graduate.

• Complete transferable coursework in your program and apply for your associate degree and graduation. • Request AGEC certification to be placed on your transcripts. • Send official transcripts at the end of your last semester before transferring. • Attend new student orientation sessions or use online orientation tools to learn which resources are essential.
CHOOSING
A Major • Examine and self-assess your abilities, career and life goals, interests and values. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What kind of skills do you have? What subject areas do you like?
• Utilize the resources and assessment tools in advisement, career and transfer centers to help you make decisions, starting in your first year. Most of these centers have resources for choosing a major and a career, as well as internship and job placement information.
• Access The Occupational Outlook Handbook, a nationally recognized source of career information, designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making decisions about their future work lives. The handbook is located on the US Bureau of Labor Statistics website (bls.gov/oco/).
• Investigate careers and then find out which majors lead to them. Talk to faculty and college/department

Transfer Options For Maricopa Community College Students
In-State Options In addition to the Arizona public universities (ASU, NAU and UA) Maricopa has transfer agreements with several other colleges and universities in Arizona, and in the Valley. These include Argosy University, Art Institute of Phoenix, DeVry University, Grand Canyon University, Midwestern University, Northcentral University, Prescott College, Ottawa University, University of Phoenix, Wayland Baptist University and Western International University. If you don’t want to go too far from home, these institutions are great options for you!
Out-of-State and International Options If studying out of state is what you’re thinking, Maricopa has partnerships in just about every part of the country – Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Utah – Oregon and North Dakota – Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania – just to name a few. Interested in international opportunities? The University of Guadalajara in Mexico may be an option for you. This agreement allows Maricopa students to transfer 98 credits and enter medical school without a bachelor’s degree. The program is accredited and students, upon completion, will have a path to practicing medicine in the United States. As a student who completes a two-year program of study in hospitality and tourism management, you will be eligible to transfer to Switzerland’s Les Roches, School of Hotel Management, to continue your studies and earn either the Swiss Hotel Association Higher Diploma in Hospitality Management, or the baccalaureate degree in a specialty area.
On-line If you are a working adult, or if you are looking for flexible degree programs, you may want to explore these options: Ashford University, Capella University, Franklin University, Jones International University, Marylhurst University, Mayville State University, Park University, Regis University, Walden University and Western Governor’s University.
f you are a student at one of the Maricopa Community Colleges and plan to seek a bachelor’s degree, you will be happy to hear that Maricopa has expanded its transfer partnerships to include more than 40 accredited colleges and universities. The advantages of having transfer agreements with several colleges include: 1) you can choose the bachelor’s degree that best suits your needs, whether it is internet, other forms of distance learning or on-campus instruction; 2) these partnerships ensure that your Maricopa coursework is accepted and applied to your program of study; and 3) cost savings – starting your degree at Maricopa will mean a substantial savings in meeting college costs. Culturally Enriched Institutions (Minority Serving Institutions) Institutions of higher education enrolling populations with significant percentages of minority students are commonly referred to as Minority Serving Institutions, or MSIs for short. The benefits in transferring to an MSI often include: affordable tuition, small class sizes, faculty and students who have similar cultural backgrounds, networking opportunities and programs designed with minority students in mind. Maricopa has partnerships with several MSIs, in particular, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI). Agreements with HBCUs include: Clark Atlanta, Florida Memorial College, Langston, Prairie View, Mississippi Valley State and North Carolina A&T. If you want to attend an HSI, the following have excellent degree programs: Mercy College, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, University of Arizona (UA South), University of the Incarnate Word, etc.
Specialized Programs Through some of Maricopa’s partnerships, once you earn an associate’s degree, you can work further toward your bachelor’s degree by earning up to 90 credits for transfer. Look into these exciting programs – which are sometimes called “3+1” agreements – as students can often complete three of their years of study at the community college. Partners accepting transfer into such programs include: Ashford University, Capella University, Charter Oak State College, Excelsior College, Northcentral University, Northern Arizona University and Regis University. Also, Maricopa has special programmatic agreements in the following areas: interior design, chiropractic medicine, diagnostic medical imaging and therapy, and an on-line dietetics program.
{ AGEC } What is AGEC?
Why should I complete AGEC? AGEC is a transfer pathway that will allow you to maximize your experience at a community college. It allows you to incorporate your credits efficiently into university graduation requirements and to complete baccalaureate majors in the minimum number of required credits. Successful completion guarantees your admission to the universities.
AGEC works for many university majors. There are three versions. AGEC-A For liberal arts majors (e.g., social science, fine arts, humanities, etc.) AGEC-B For business and business-related majors AGEC-S For majors with more stringent mathematics and mathematics-based science requirements
How do I know which AGEC to follow? If you know the major you plan to follow and the university you plan to attend, you can follow a transfer guide. These transfer guides are available at aztransfer.com It is highly recommended that students meet regularly with an academic advisor to develop an educational plan. Your advisor
can help you locate information and answer your questions about AGEC and transfer requirements.
What are the requirements for AGEC? The requirements for AGEC are embedded in the requirements for the Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Business (ABus) and Associate of Science (AS) degrees. How do I know which courses meet these requirements? Courses that apply to AGEC are listed in your college catalog and can be found online at maricopa. edu/academic/ccta/curric/ac/ amtrx.doc It is important to know that the list of courses is updated each semester. However, any courses you take will continue to carry the value they had in the semester you completed the course.
Does it matter which courses I choose to meet AGEC requirements? Students completing the AGEC will still be required to fulfill lower-division program requirements and prerequisites within their college and major area of study. In order to most efficiently complete a degree program, students should select courses to meet the AGEC require-
ments that will also fulfill program requirements in the college and major they intend to pursue upon transfer. Majors in the professional fields, e.g., architecture, engineering, business, fine/creative arts, health professions and natural sciences have significant prerequisites and program requirements that must be completed before a student may be admitted to upper-division course work. Students who are undecided about which of the Arizona public universities they plan to attend, or what program of study they intend to pursue, are advised to explore educational options while they complete the AGEC.

ASU and Maricopa Community Colleges launch an expanded partnership with the goal to increase student transfer success and degree completion
rizona State University and the Maricopa Community College District are entering into an expanded partnership to increase the number of students who complete a community college degree and go on to graduate from ASU. The goal is to double the number of students transferring to ASU from the community colleges, and to increase their success at the university. The agreement emphasizes academic preparation, increased student advising and financial support and better sharing of data and information to make the transfer process smooth. Students will benefit from priority or guaranteed admission to ASU degree programs when a prescribed course sequence is followed. This represents an expansion of the ASU/Maricopa Alliance, an agreement that was first entered into in July 2005. As the two largest providers of higher education in the state, ASU and Maricopa are uniquely positioned to create a student-centered “culture of transfer” to increase the number of college degrees awarded in Arizona. ASU and the MCCD have a strong history of developing collaborations and partnerships to support transfer student success. As the need for educated workers in the state increases, they are ramping up their efforts, with the following goals: • Double the number of Maricopa students transferring to ASU over the next five years, from 4,300 in 2006-07; • Double the percentage of Maricopa students transferring to ASU with an associate’s degree, from 30 percent in 2006-07; • Increase the rate of Maricopa transfer students earning a bachelor’s degree; • Ensure seamless transition of students between Maricopa and ASU; • Expand opportunities for direct transfer to specified ASU degree programs. A key component of the enhanced alliance is incentives for students who complete
an associate’s degree or Arizona General Education Curriculum through an articulated degree-to-degree transfer program. The Maricopa to ASU Pathways Program (MAPP) will provide guaranteed admission into an ASU undergraduate program. First-time freshmen who successfully complete a MAPP and transfer to ASU within three years of entering the program will benefit from tuition incentives such as a cap on tuition increases during their enrollment at ASU. Guidelines include encouraging Maricopa students to earn an associate’s degree before transferring, making students aware of financial aid opportunities and requirements, increasing ASU on-site student advising on MCCD campuses, increasing collection and sharing of data and the development of an electronic transcript system. “Linkages between the community college and the university are essential to the future of our educational enterprise in Arizona,” says Michael Crow, ASU president. “The Maricopa Community College District and ASU, through these efforts, have greatly enhanced our relationship and thus greatly improved our chances of success.” “Our colleges and ASU have a strong history of collaboration that will only be enhanced by strengthening the alliance,” Chancellor Rufus Glasper said. “We want to make sure that as many Maricopa County students as possible have the best opportunity to succeed first at a Maricopa Community College and then at the university.” The two institutions appointed a steering committee to implement the MAPP program by fall 2009, and to assess the progress of the alliance. it’s all Right Here! he Connection is a partnership between the Maricopa Community Colleges and Northern Arizona University (NAU) designed to increase transfer opportunities for Maricopa students within Maricopa County. This partnership strengthens and coordinates the longstanding relationship between the Maricopa Colleges and NAU and increases student access to a variety of quality, comprehensive academic programs. Students can earn a baccalaureate degree on, or near, their home community college campus. Faculty and advisors at both institutions are able to guide students through the process to apply and enroll in a range of undergraduate programs. NAU advisors at Maricopa colleges help students plan a smooth transition between associate and bachelor degree program pathways. Classes for NAU’s Connection programs are offered on specific MCCCD campuses but all programs are open to Maricopa students studying at any of the Maricopa Community Colleges.
