Ali Shirmohammadi came to this country from Iran 40 years ago to seek his American Dream. Ali was fortunate to be raised in a wonderful, blessed family, where at a very young age he and other family members learned from their parents that it was their duty and responsibility to serve humanity, especially the needy. Serving humanity and the needy was a daily tradition of his parents. Ali grew up following in the footsteps of his parents, as he has carried and practiced that tradition ever since arriving to America. The past 40 years Mr. Shirmohammadi has been a law-abiding citizen, along with his wonderful wife raising a beautiful family of four sons and a daughter. He has also continued to establish several successful businesses through hard work, dedication, sacrifice and perseverance. Among the businesses he is fortunate to have is one of the best Middle Eastern restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley named Heidar Baba. Furthermore, he has continued to contribute to our community while helping the homeless and needy. He’s a pillar in the Iranian community and well respected. He always makes himself available to welcome immigrants from Iran who plan to reside in Pasadena and helps them find jobs and establish themselves. The past four years I have had the pleasure and honor of hosting an annual Pasadena police officers’ appreciation luncheon to say thanks to our wonderful police officers for their service and dedication to our community. When I first approached Mr. Shirmohammadi four years ago to seek his kindness of contributing food for the luncheon, he immediately said that it was his honor, pleasure and duty to take part in the event and show his appreciation to our wonderful officers who work so hard daily to serve and protect us. Each of the past four years he has served a full variety of delicious Persian food and beverages to over 280 delighted officers. He has also sponsored “Mid-Summer Night Concert,” benefiting the Upper Hastings Ranch Association, serving food and beverages to over 250

BERNIE TAKES CHARGE In CNN’s Town Hall (Feb. 25), Bernie Sanders took charge of the 2020 presidential campaign. He came across as incisive, clear, compelling and confident, covering a comprehensive range of topics. He had passion and purpose and was an intellectual tour de force. He has the stamina of a man 20 years younger. Unlike the other candidates, he has already been through the incomprehensible ordeal of a presidential campaign and is more than ready to do it all over again — it doesn’tfaze him one bit. He knows and can articulate ALL the important issues and readily offers solutions for all of them. He is poignantly fierce about
the separation of children from their parents at the border and eviscerates Trump’s cruelty. And he peremptorily dismisses Trump as a pathological liar and a fraud but he still has the grace to praise Trump’s negotiations with North Korea. Finally, he has an unprecedented flair for raising ‘UGE amounts of grassroots money. I believe he has already taken charge of this campaign and the other candidates will have to follow. Tina Nguyen writes in Vanity Fair: “As the Democratic runnerup in 2016, Bernie Sanders has a built-in advantage that’s vaulted him to the front of the 2020 pack. He has nearly unparalleled name recognition, raised nearly $6 million within 24 hours of announcing his White House bid, and enjoys a sizable polling lead over several top rivals.” Now Hillary Clinton staff members are targeting Bernie (“Bitter Clinton Staffers Are Still Complaining…About Bernie,” Vanity Fair) for using Clinton charter flights along with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Katy Perry, and several other celebrities, while campaigning for Hillary. Racking up a fraction of the $11.9 million Hillary’s campaign spent on charter flights, Bernie traveled to 39 rallies in 13 states during the final three months and 17 rallies in 11 states during the final week of the election. According to Vanity Fair, Sanders’ 2016 campaign spokesman, Michael Briggs, said, “He busted his tail to fly all over the country to talk about why it made sense to elect Hillary Clinton and the thanks that [we] get is this kind of petty stupid sniping a couple years after the fact. . . .” None of this will bother Bernie. He is the most astonishing, resilient and influential phenomenon in US politics today. And I am inspired by his resemblance to the great American anti-capitalist economist and philosopher, Richard Wolff, not only in appearance, but also in his analytical lucidity. He may well turn out to be the sensation of this campaign as he was in 2016. I do like all the other presidential candidates, however. Why? Because they will make great running mates for Bernie. ~ CLIVE LEEMAN VIAEMAIL 03.21.19 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
S
TRAUMA IS A FACT OF LIFE FOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF KIDS IN FOSTER CARE
hanita was deflated when she was not given the support she needed to apply for a jobs program that she had her heart set on. Deanna, so frustrated at the lack of love and support in her life, and not knowing yet again where she would be going next, threw furniture through the window. Emilia became depressed, not seeing any way out of her situation. These are just three examples of young people who have grown up in foster care and cannot count on adult guidance, support, or love in their lives. There are 28,000 kids in the foster care system in Los Angeles County, according to KidsAlliance.org. Twenty percent are homeless when the system shuts the door on them at 18. Fifty-three percent become homeless within six months of leaving their foster home. Seventy percent of people in California prisons (nearly 91,000) grew up in foster care, according to the Every Child Foundation. I can quote similarly distressing statistics all day long. On their own, these figures can be simply numbers. It is easy to forget that behind each digit is a living, breathing, feeling young person with hopes and desires; a person yearning for love and acceptance. An individual who needs to be a part of something, to be acknowledged for the special being they are. Each and every one of them. Imagine, if you will, being a child or adolescent. A couple of strange adults show up at your home unexpectedly and take you away from what you know to be home; away from your toys, your friends, your brothers and sisters. You are taken to a police station, or maybe an office building, or to a different home with new people. Often, the home you are taken to turns out to be less than satisfactory, so even though you are starting to get used to your new situation, to be less frightened, to cry less over what you have lost, it happens again. Once more you are taken away. Bear in mind that foster children are no different from children who aren’t in foster care: they are learning and growing, like to play and hang out with friends their age, and need the love and stability that a permanent home provides. This wrenching move may happen to you seven times before you are 18. Seven times you leave the room, the belongings, the people, the friends, the schools, the neighborhood you have started to call your own. There is no loving parent there with you, to talk to you about the move that is about to happen, to create the expectation and excitement about a new adventure, to help you work through the emotions about having to leave everything, again. Traumatic are the lives of the vast majority of young people in foster care. I am not referring to the lucky ones who have a loving family member to take them in, or those who quickly get adopted. I’m referring to the 85 percent (yes, another statistic), who are beaten, abused, abandoned, or ignored, and carry those internal scars for the rest of their lives. Yet, many turn their lives around, particularly when someone steps in to help. This does not happen easily or without struggle. A few success stories include Jimmy Wayne, who lived in various homes as a child and became a successful country music singer; Regina Louise, who was moved 30 times and is now a successful author and motivational speaker; and Michael Oher, whose many moves meant he attended 11 different schools in nine years, then became an All-America tackle for the University of Mississippi. If young adults who grew up in the foster care system are lucky, they fi nd one person who is kind to them and who they can count on. There are some really wonderful nonprofit agencies providing services for these young people. In Pasadena, these include Youth Moving On, a program of Hillsides, Journey House, and 50/50 Leadership, which works with community colleges and local agencies to bring fi nancial literacy programs and mentoring to these young people who must now create a life for themselves. We teach them how to manage their money, make sound fi nancial decisions and build wealth. Have you been looking for a way to pay it forward, to give back to the community? As a mentor, you could be that one person in a young adult’s life that helps them rise from the ashes of their childhood and become happy and successful. ■

he Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has informed members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that it has assigned investigators to look into the circumstances under which trainers and veterinarians may have been involved in the deaths of 23 horses at Santa Anita Park Racetrack since late December. As that was developing, a bill written by a local member of Congress which could bring increased accountability to the sport of kings was introduced for reconsideration.
Meanwhile, a horse racing official acknowledged that the racehorse deaths at the Santa Anita track might prove to be a “Blackfish” moment for the horse racing industry. “It could, it could,” said Rick Baedeker, executive director of the California Horse Racing Board in a March 14 interview with FOX News. “It’s at risk.” The critically acclaimed documentary “Blackfish” focused on the treatment of killer whales living at SeaWorld and led to widespread criticism of the popular water park.
The LA County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a motion by Supervisor Kathryn Barger to stop county departments from using an herbicide containing a chemical believed to cause cancer while a study is conducted and viable alternatives are explored. The motion comes on the heels of a report in the Pasadena Weekly that stated county workers in Pasadena were spraying Roundup, an herbicide containing glyphosate, which the World Health Organization in 2015 found “probably causes cancer.” Under Barger’s motion, the spraying would stop while a full investigation is conducted by the Department of Public Works in conjunction with the county departments of Public Health, Parks and Recreation, and Beaches and Harbors, and the Agriculture Commission. “I am asking county departments to stop the use of this herbicide until public health and environmental professionals can determine if it’s safe for further use in LA County and explore alternative methods for vegetation management,” said Barger in a prepared statement. A report is expected to be issued to the supervisors within 30 days. The herbicide is being used to kill vegetation growing near a heliport in Northeast Pasadena, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (DPW) told the Pasadena Weekly two weeks ago after one resident living nearby complained about the spraying. Pasadena city officials stopped using Roundup in 2018, according to City Manager Steve Mermell. All told, there are local and state government glyphosate restrictions or bans in place in 13 states. Other California cities to take action on use of the herbicide include: Los Angeles, Burbank, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Thousand Oaks, Irvine and Richmond. In August, a state civil court jury found that Roundup was responsible for a school groundskeeper’s terminal cancer. Dewayne Johnson was spraying the chemical 20 to 30 times a year while working at a school district near San Francisco. According to CNN, more than 800 other people are suing Monsanto, makers of Roundup, claiming the herbicide gave them cancer. A jury in Northern California on Tuesday found Roundup probably caused cancer in relation to a second civil federal case. “The damage has already been done to the neighborhood where my family and I have lived since 1994,” said former Mayor Bill Paparian. “Nevertheless, I applaud Supervisor Barger’s efforts.”

SIERRA MADRE POLICE CHIEF PICKED TO LEAD SOUTH PAS DEPARTMENT BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
South Pasadena City Manager Stephanie DeWolfe has selected Joe Ortiz to lead the South Pasadena Police Department. “I am very pleased to welcome Joe Ortiz to Joe Ortiz South Pasadena,” DeWolfe said in a statement issued on March 15. “His community-based approach to policing, along with extensive experience in similar police departments, makes him an excellent fit for our city.” Ortiz, a 25-year law enforcement veteran, succeeds former South Pasadena Police Chief Art Miller, who left the department in August after five years to take the chief’s position in Peoria, Arizona. Capt. Brian Solinsky has served as acting chief since that time. Ortiz served as police chief in Sierra Madre since 2016, joining that department in 2010. Prior to that, Ortiz served as a detective with the Glendora Police Department. He’s also a veteran of the US Air Force and the Air National Guard. “I look forward to engaging with the South Pasadena community, police officers and staff, and the city leadership teams,” Ortiz said. “My predecessors have created a very strong department and I’m excited to be able to build on that success with a collaborative approach.” Ortiz will be sworn in on April 1, DeWolfe said. He will lead a department of 36 sworn officers and 17 non-sworn staff members. Ortiz holds a master’s degree in emergency management and bachelor of arts degree in occupational studies from Cal State, Long Beach. He and his wife live in Claremont. Ortiz has two adult sons, one of whom has followed in his law enforcement footsteps. According to the South Pasadena Review, a field of 21 applicants was narrowed down to seven. Those seven candidates were interviewed by two panels, one comprised of sworn law enforcement executives, the other made up of city employees. The panels chose four finalists who were then interviewed by DeWolfe, who made the final decision. “I’d like to welcome Chief Ortiz to the South Pasadena community,” South Pasadena Mayor Marina Khubesrian said in a prepared statement. “His reputation in Sierra Madre is excellent, and I have full confidence that he will bring the same high level of service and dedication to our residents.” ■

LOCALS STAND TOGETHER IN VIGIL FOR MUSLIMS KILLED IN NEW ZEALAND TERROR ATTACK BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN
In a show of solidarity, hundreds of local residents held a vigil on Saturday night at Pasadena City Hall to remember the victims of the terror attack that left 50 people dead and 20 others injured at two New Zealand mosques. Pasadena Police Chief John Perez spoke at the event, as well as leaders of the Islamic Center of Southern California, and Jewish and Christian faith leaders. “The Muslim community is in grief and pain,” said Islamic Center Board Chairman Omar Ricci. The two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand were attacked Friday during afternoon John Perez prayers. According to media reports, the alleged assailant, 27-year-old Brenton Tarrant, had five guns, said New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush. Three other people were apprehended, though one of those people might not have been involved in the shootings. Forty-one people were killed at the Al Noor Mosque near Hagley Park in the city’s center; seven other people were killed at a mosque in Linwood, a few miles away. Three people taken to a hospital died from injuries suffered in the attack, according to CNN. The news network also reported that the suspect wrote a lengthy manifesto filled with anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric. In the document, Tarrant praised President Donald Trump as “a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose,” but said he did not support his policies. The White House pushed back on Sunday against any attempt to link Trump to the accused gunman. On Saturday, many people brought rugs to the vigil at Pasadena City Hall and started the gathering with prayers for the victims. “For me, my friends who wear the hijab, my mother who wears a hijab, that’s the No. 1 fear, is when they walk on the street … are they going to get attacked. Things like this perpetuate hate,” Sara Nabhan told ABC News. ■ 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.21.19
A ‘BLACKFISH’ MOMENT? CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7
As the documentary continued to air on CNN and on YouTube, public opinion began to shift against the park, leading to a dramatic drop in attendance. Compounding the park’s economic problems, dozens of celebrities and entertainers canceled appearances. PETA also protested a SeaWorld float entered in the 2014 Rose Parade. But it could be far worse for Santa Anita. In California, voters have the power to ban the sport in the state. “The voters authorized horseracing in 1933 and they have the ultimate call,” Baedeker explained. Animal rights activists have been successful in ending animal competitions. In November, Florida voters approved a state constitutional amendment that will end dog racing by 2021. The ban received 69 percent of the vote; it needed 60 percent to pass. The amendment means dog racing at Florida’s 11 greyhound tracks will be shuttered and just six active greyhound racing tracks in five US states will remain. Although no one is calling for a ballot measure, the scrutiny on Santa Anita may be at an all-time high due to the racehorse deaths since Dec. 26. Track officials indefinitely canceled horseracing at the Arcadia track on March 5 — including the facility’s biggest race of the year, the March 9 Santa Anita Handicap. Officials have said they plan to reopen on March 29. Some experts claim that the unusually high volume of rain that has fallen on the region in recent weeks has indirectly led to more injuries to the legs of the horses. Rainfall totaling more than 11 inches has forced track officials to take precautions, leaving the track much harder than usual. After every rainstorm, officials seal the track by tightly packing dirt to prevent the rain from oversaturating the running area, according to NBC News. But some experts believe the process makes the track too hard and unforgiving for animals that weigh more than a half-ton and run on spindly ankles. According to the weather forecast, more rain was scheduled to fall on the San Gabriel Valley this week. PETA has long blamed the horse deaths and injuries on overmedicating the animals. On March 9 track officials announced new rules that force owners to apply for permission 24 hours in advance of intense workouts. In addition, before those workouts can be conducted veterinarians must evaluate the horses. A new position of Director of Equine Welfare, which will be held by an accredited veterinarian, is also being created. The director will be responsible for the oversight of all aspects of equine well-being and will lead a new rapid response team for injuries. That team will be tasked with conducting transparent investigations of all factors involving the injury, as well the communication of their findings to the public.
After the last horse was euthanized on Thursday, officials at the track began taking drastic steps on their own to reform things. Also on Thursday, Congress took steps to increase accountability in the sport. US Rep. Judy Chu (D-Pasadena) reintroduced the Horseracing Integrity Act, a bill Chu co-authored with Rep. Andy Barr (R-Kentucky) and Rep. Paul Tonk (D-New York). The bill would ban the use of medication in the 24 hours prior to a race. It would also introduce uniform national standards for horseracing to replace the hodgepodge of regulations from 38 state racing commissions. The bill was first introduced in 2017. During congressional hearings last year, some industry stalwarts railed against the ban on race day medication. On Thursday, officials at the track banned all same-day medication, including Lasix, a powerful diuretic which removes excess fluid from horses. They also banned the whipping of horses. Lasix has been administered to horses before races for the past 40 years as a way to reduce or prevent bleeding, according to Equine Health Labs. Because it reduces plasma volume, some experts believe it reduces blood pressure in the lungs and prevents bleeding from occurring. “We will wait no longer for the industry to come together as one to institute these changes,” wrote Belinda Stronach chairwoman and president of the Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita. “Nor will we wait for the legislation required to undertake this paradigm shift. We are taking a stand and fully recognize just how disruptive this might be.” PETA, which called for the end of whipping and the use of drugs, called the decision to ban race day drugging a watershed moment. “This groundbreaking plan, which PETA has pushed for, will not bring back the 22 horses who have died recently,” said PETA Spokesperson David Pearle in a prepared statement. Pearle’s comments were made just prior to the last death, which occurred on March 14. “But it will prevent the deaths of many more and will set a new standard for racing that means less suffering for thoroughbreds at this track.” Members of PETA were scheduled to protest at the district attorney’s office last Wednesday and called on LA County DA Jackie Lacey to order a criminal investigation into the trainers whose horses died in the last three months. PETA was a critical part in the battle waged against SeaWorld for its treatment of orcas. “These are seismic shifts for racing,” said Baedeker. “These are things that have been talked about for years. This situation calls for bold action. They have taken bold action and I applaud them for it.” ■

A FAN ‘FOREVER’ ACTOR BILL OBERST JR. CHANNELS RAY BRADBURY IN FREE SHOW AT SOUTH PASADENA LIBRARY BY CARL KOZLOWSKI
T
here are plenty of actors who can deliver electrifying performances, but not many who can make m magic happen when their performance particularly onerous challenge in August 2016, when venue is literally left without electricity. But Bill Oberst Jr. proved that he was up to that particularl his planned solo performance of the classic Ray Bradbury story “Pillar of Fire” at the South Pasadena Pasade Public Library’s Community Room was nearly derailed by an, unexpected power outage. As the crowd fi led out of the building, Oberst hated the thought of disappointing them. He instan instantly decided to perform the show on the building’s front porch, without any sound effects or lighting and using a friend in the audience to read all the lines for other characters and stage directions. The resulting performance received a rapturous response from the audience, and inspire inspired Oberst to develop a bigger tribute to the legendary Bradbury. He’ll debut the resulting show, “Ray Bradbury Live (forever)” in a free performance at 7 p.m. Friday at the Community Room, located at 1115 El Centro St., South Pasadena. “Afterwards that night, the audience was staying outside and someone asked me what’s my dream project and mine was to do a project based on Ray Bradbury’s life,” says Oberst, whose “Pillar” was selected as the Best Solo Show of 2015 in Los Angeles by theatrical review website Bitter Lemons and won that tha year’s Platinum Award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. “Two people came up who had contact with his family and they sai said ‘Here’s the email address to contact the family,” adds Oberst. “They said they’d write the family for me, and the next day I got an email from family who put me in touch with how to license Ray’s material so I could portray aspects of his work. It was a c three-year process putting the show together.” Oberst’s script for “Ray Bradbury Live (forever)” mixes excerpts of Bradbury works like “A Sound Of Thunder” and “Something Wicked This Way Comes” with selections from 50 years of Co Bradbury interviews and essays, large-screen video p projections and an original musical score. Bradbury, who hailed from Illinois and attended Los Angeles High School after moving to LA as a teen, went on to write nearly 50 books, book among them “The Martian Chronicles,” “The Illustrated Man,” “Fahrenheit 451,” “Dandelion Wine,” “I Sing the Body Electric,” “Dan and “Zen in the Art of Writing.” Author of hundreds of short stories, Bradbury also worked in other genres, writing or consulting on screenplays and television scripts. Films he wrote or contributed to included John Huston’s “Moby Dick,” which Bradbury and Hust director Huston co-wrote, and 1953’s “It Came from Outer Space,” based on an original Bradbury stor story treatment of a different title. It Came from Fans of “The Twilight Z Zone” might remember an episode called Outer Space “I Sing the Body Electric,” based on Bradbury’s book of the Electr same name, which aired in 1962 as the series’ 100th episode. a The New York Times in 2012, the year of Bradbury’s death, called the th prolific author “the writer most responsible for bringing modern science fiction into the literary litera mainstream.” Says Say Oberst, who has won awards OffBroadway and in Los Angeles for his theatriBro cal c reading of Bradbury’s “Pillar Of Fire,” “I’m the least likely person to portray Ray Bradbury. I didn’t know him and I don’t look like him, but I’ve been in love with him for 40 years. This wild, improbable project was born of wild, im CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

blinding bli bl i ndi indi in ding ng llove.” ovee.”” ov Oberst recalls that his passion for Bradbury and his work was borne of an unexpected d discovery he made while walking in the woods near ar his South Carolina childhood home when he was 12. He found a copy of Bradbury’s story collection “S Is For Space” and started to read, instantly feeling admiration for “his humanity and hope for humanity.” “With all our shortcomings, he wass never pessimistic about humanity,” explains Oberst. “Some parts make ke you cry because he loved people and found them beautiful despite theirr flaws. I called him the world’s greatest living science fiction writer and he h hated that because he saw himself as a writer of the humanities, not just science fiction.” The South Pasadena Public Library is the perfect place for the show’s world premiere because of Bradbury’s own strong ties to the local institution. B The famed writer often remarked reemarked that he loved the city because its smalltown atmosphere reminded remiinded him of his hometown of Waukegan, Illinois. Bradbury also sta stated ated that the South Pasadena Library reminded him of the Waukegan Carnegie Ca arnegie Library where he fi rst started his lifelong self-education journeyy which eventually led him to become one of the most beloved The Twilight and popularr American authors. As a result, South Pasadena’s head librarian Zone Steve Fjeldsted is aiming to develop the library’s Ray Bradbury Conference Fjeeldsted Room and is preparing a fundraiser to place a stained glass window in 2020, the author’s centennial year. So far, more than 200 items have been donated for f an auction that will raise money for the goal. “It is wonderfully fitting to be doing this fi rst performance at South Pasadena Public Library, where the idea was born,” says Oberst. “It’s also apt that the show debut in the library that has dedicated its conference room in Ray Bradbury’s name and one that has also presented so many other projects to honor his legacy. And besides, a multitude of Ray Bradbury appearances, fi lm m screenings, and plays have been presented in South Pasadena through the years, not only at the library, but also at the Fremont Centre Theatre a couple c of blocks away.” In “Live,” Oberst will portray Bradbury at 50, a period when the author (who died at 92 in 2012) was at the peak of his physical and creative abilities. Since a Bradbury enjoyed riding his bike to the library, Oberst will ride riide a bicycle onto the stage using a ramp that was actually built for Bradbury’s Bradburyy’s wheelchair during a late-life appearance there. Oberst will be employing the approach that famed d actor Hal Holbrook used to portray American icon Mark Twain for decadess of live solo shows. As such, he will be reciting excerpts from some of Bradbury’s Bradb bury’s greatest works rather than delivering a straight biography of his life. liffe. “II think that Ray was one of the greatest interpreters of his works, works and he did it better than anybody else,” says Oberst. “In the show, Ray is doing O an evening of readings from his works wor but of course it’s all memorized and he’s acting it out. ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes,’ ‘Some ‘Sound of Thunder,’ and a story from ‘Martian Chronicles’ will all be performed by Ray in his h own words. And we’ll have a digital music score and visuals on a screen behind him. His v wife makes an appearance too, as an actress playing appeara her makes a surprise surpris appearance for a pivotal scene. I’m trying to make mak it like what’s going through his mind.” ■ Bill Oberst JJr. presents “Ray Bradbury Live (forever)” at 7 p.m. p.m Fri. at the Community Room of the South Pasadena Public Library, 1115 El Centro St., Pasa South Pasadena. Admission is free and S refreshments will be served. The show is appropriate for all ages. Call (626) 4037350 or visit raybradburyliveforever.com.

o vegan or not to vegan? That was the question in the weeks following my last dining experience. Should I make another attempt to delve into the world of meat and dairy substitutes, forgo any qualms I may have, and go somewhere I don’t have any other choice? I’m no quitter, so I did those things and more at Real Food Daily in Pasadena, where I fell in love. Located on Del Mar Avenue just across the street from The Shops on South Lake Avenue, RFD is an airy restaurant with a beautiful outdoor patio and ample seating inside, particularly on the weekday evening my friend and I arrived for dinner. Inside, Real Food Daily looks like a dining room you’d see on Pinterest, only cozier and more intimate. There are two other locations if you ever fi nd yourself in the LA area — West Hollywood and LAX.

PHOTOS BY DANNY LIAO To start, we played it safe and ordered the baked mac and cheese ($8), which is made with cashew cream and baked panko crust. Even to share it was a generous serving, and we both loved it. Cheese often seems to be the deal breaker among those who toy with the idea of making the switch, but if all vegan cheeses are like whatever they are cooking up at Real Food Daily, (more on their ricotta later) then sign me up. It tasted less creamy than a mac and cheese made with dairy, but it was musky, garlicy, and thick in the best way possible. In between spoonfuls of our starter, I decided to try their homemade green lemonade ($6), mixed with clover juice and made with kale, cucumber, celery, spinach, pear, cilantro mint, and lime. The combination of flavors tasted refreshing and took a regular old lemonade up a few notches. It didn’t hurt that it made me feel like the epitome itome of health heaa lth with a he CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

large glass of green juice at my table. Among bottled juices, they offer a wide array of juice made in house (all $11) such as the Power C with orange, carrot and celery, and the All Green, made with parsley, spinach, kale, celery, cucumber and apple. For those who prefer alcohol, they’ve got you covered. The menu features wine, bottled and canned beer, and of course, kombucha on tap. For our entree, my friend ordered the mushroom pizza ($18), made with white sauce, pesto, seasonal mushrooms, cashew mozzarella, parmesan and white truffle oil. The truffle wasn’t too strong, the mushrooms complimented the white sauce, and the pesto was the perfect addition to an already well-balanced, melt in your mouth dish. It’s important to note that although the menu lists “parmesan” and other dairy ingredients or meats without noting they are vegan directly next to each item, everything is, in fact, vegan. While I’m a happy camper with greasy chain pizza, it’s nice to be reminded how amazing fancier pizza can be, and in this case, lactose free. Any pizza can also be ordered as a calzone as well as gluten free for a $2 upcharge. While I was completely torn between a burrito that was jam-packed with goodness or the lasagna (which is my favorite dish), I left it up to our friendly server. He quickly and confidently suggested the lasagna, so I knew I was in good hands. It’s made with creamy cashew ricotta, spinach, cremini mushroom, and marinara sauce, and I was pleasantly surprised, although that’s putting it mildly. The “ricotta” had every element that real cheese ricotta does from the flavor, the
consistency, down to how it looks. While this cashew alternative is creamier, thus making the entire dish velvety, I didn’t mind. My friend summed it up well by saying she wished she had something to dip into the plate. On the other hand, I would gladly dip into a pool of Real Food Daily’s lasagna if I could. There is an endless list of amazing dishes on the menu, but a few I’d recommend that I need to try are the buffalo cauliflower pizza ($16), the street tacos ($17) made with jackfruit, and the ramen bowl made with sriracha grilled tofu ($17). They also serve breakfast all day, offering a tofu patty sandwich ($13) made with tempeh bacon, hash browns, spicy mayo on a brioche bun, a breakfast burrito ($13), a breakfast pizza ($16) and pancakes ($12). With such a diverse roundup of food, drinks, and treats, Real Food Daily is the real deal — even for a non-vegan like me. While our diner experience was amazing overall, we decided to take advantage of the Bengees Ice Cream next door, which happens to serve quite a few vegan options. Ice cream can be ordered from a single scoop ($4 for regular or $4.50 for vegan) to a fl ight of 4 scoops ($8 and $9) in a cone, cup, and can even be enjoyed stuffed between a cronut ($6.50). After our fi lling meal, we went simple. I ordered the vegan chocolate with Oreo crumble topping and my friend ordered the salty caramel topped with graham crackers. Both were delicious and the perfect way to end our dinner excursion. If you ever fi nd yourself in need of the perfect date night, girls night, or are in the mood for takeout, Bengees and Real Food Daily are a sure bet for a delicious experience.

AESTHETIC EXHIBITION California Art Club hosts Gold Medal Exhibition through March 29 in Pasadena The Pasadena Museum of California Art may have sadly shuttered its doors, but the once-beloved arts space is home to the California Art Club’s “108th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition” through March 29. The event spotlights nearly 300 works, ranging from pristine landscapes and seascapes to evocative figures and still life, which pays tribute to the California Impressionist movement that was inspired by the pioneering artists who founded the organization along the banks of the Arroyo Seco in 1909. The 204 exhibiting artists include nationally renowned painters and sculptors, as well as up-and-coming artists, who employ time-honored techniques to create works that provide commentaries on issues facing society, including environmentalism and diversity. Because the organization’s mission includes fostering a greater understanding for traditional art, the club is presenting a series of Gold Medal educational programs, which includes a Paint/Sculpt-out on the rooftop terrace and the “Meet the Artists” events, during which artists share insights about the works on view. This Sunday, two programs will be offered: from 1 to 5 p.m., Rooftop En Plein Air - Paint/Sculpt-Out with City Views features club artists using the tools of their trade to create new works from the rooftop terrace. “Meet the Artists - Capturing Urban Themes” will take place from 2 to 4 p.m., with exhibiting artists Laurie Hendricks, Michael Obermeyer and Gayle Garner Roski discussing how urban life and often grittier city scenes inspire and inform their works. The exhibition is located at 490 E. Union St., Pasadena. Admission is free.Visit californiaartclub.org. DON’T HOLD BACK COOPERATION CAN PREVENT MALE ORGASM DISORDER FROM HURTING A GOOD RELATIONSHIP Dear Patti, When I was in high school I was never noticed by boys and rarely asked out. I was skinny, fl at chested with very narrow hips. It wasn’t until I was in college, when my body softened with curves, that I remember men looking at me with interest. That’s when I met Chris and we’ve been together two years. Chris is handsome, smart and successful. He treats me like I’m the most beautiful woman in the world, and due to my history I never take it for granted. We live together, have been engaged for six months and everything is wonderful except for a sexual problem. Chris is a great lover but he never reaches a climax when we’re together. He admits that he can only have sexual completion when he’s completely alone in our apartment. He insists that it’s no big deal and that he enjoys sex with me very much, but my old insecurity comes up and while I know he loves me I wonder if ultimately I’m not sexy enough to please him — and sometimes he wants to continue sex for so long it becomes painful. Also, how will I be able to get pregnant? He’s been to his doctor and medical issues have been ruled out. We talk about this together and I tell him that he deserves to be happy and satisfi ed. Is there anything we can do? — Heidi Dear Heidi, I know this problem is disconcerting, but don’t lose sight of the fact that not only do you both love and appreciate each other but you also feel comfortable talking together. Unfortunately, many couples ignore such issues — especially when sexual in nature. What you’re describing is called male orgasm disorder, a problem of involuntary inhibition that affects men, similar to female orgasm disorder in women. While they can get excited and perform sexually, they have trouble reaching an orgasm — even with plenty of stimulation by their partner. Many men downplay this problem as long as there’s no difficulty achieving erections. When a man unconsciously holds back so tightly in order to avoid a state of anxiety, he also holds back his climax. (This is the opposite of impotency, in which strong feelings of anxiety can ruin an erectile response altogether.) Because individuals can be inhibited psychologically and/or physiologically, I highly recommend that you and Chris see a professional sexologist who is experienced in treating sexual disorders with a talk-therapy orientation and with behavioral techniques. Traditional psychotherapy might uncover psychological reasons, such as past trauma involving specific memories that need to be emotionally worked through, the fear of pregnancy, or superficial performance anxiety. Two major confl icts that frequently come up in the treatment of delayed ejaculation are the fear of intimacy/becoming too closely attached and unconscious aggressive tendencies which are defended against by “holding back” all impulses, both hostile and pleasurable. The therapist can also address your insecurities as well. A goal of behavioral sexual therapy would be for Chris to have his orgasmic reflex respond normally and naturally. The sex therapist will probably start with the condition under which Chris can comfortably climax and then up the ante. Since Chris can bring himself to completion when he’s alone, he’ll probably be given directions to practice masturbating in the locked bedroom, knowing you’re still in the apartment. He’ll be encouraged to use the mental distraction of erotic fantasy. When he’s accomplished this successfully several times in a row, he’ll then want to create the same scenario with an unlocked door and, fi nally, an open door. After this exercise has been successful, he’ll repeat the procedure with you being in the same room. The next step is for the two of you to make love. After you’ve reached orgasm, Chris should then masturbate to climax. This is a very important step as it knocks down defenses regarding intimacy and establishes a mental association between sex with you and the act of completing an orgasm. You and Chris can then gradually build up to where you can stimulate him to climax after intercourse and demonstrate your happiness in being able to please him. The last phase of treatment — during which time he should discontinue pleasuring himself — will consist of a grouping of sexual experiences until he reaches the goal of climaxing during sexual intercourse. Studies have shown that once this level of intimacy is achieved, the problem usually disappears. ■ Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. MUSICAL MAGIC
JANET KLEIN AND HER PARLOR BOYS PERFORM CLASSIC JAZZFUELED SONGS SATURDAY AT COFFEE GALLERY BY CARL KOZLOWSKI
B
lending a bouncy bob cut with vintage fashion sense and a large band that plays an eclectic array of instruments ranging from violin and accordion to clarinet and vibraphone on tunes from the 1920s and ’30s, Janet Klein has made a substantial impression on the Los Angeles music scene for more than two decades. Backed by a coterie ranging from three to 10 other musicians in her group Her Parlor Boys, Klein transcends the shallow limitations of hipster cover bands by spotlighting music that would otherwise be lost in today’s music world. But her biggest asset is her charmingly original voice. Plus, the way she plays her ukulele with such passion and flair makes listeners regard it as a unique and under-used musical instrument
rather than as a prop or gimmick. Klein and Her Parlor Boys will be putting all their magic on display with an evening of music covering everything from Tin Pan Alley, hot jazz and ragtime gems to Hawaiian and Yiddish novelty tunes, as well as French and Italian knock-out ballads. “I really find it so rich and endlessly interesting,” explains Klein. “I just celebrated my 20th anniversary of my first CD and about then I started to form my band and at that time I was really all alone with my love of this music. There were a couple of bands — Zoot Suit Serenaders in Northern California, and a Dutch band called the Bohunks. But other than that I didn’t know anybody. “I found these old recordings and decided to take up the CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

MUSICAL MAGIC CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17 ukulele, which at the time was a rare and weird thing to do,” she continues. “I like sharing the music that I’ve been collecting and recording over the years. It’s just not the kind of music you hear anywhere. There are so many sounds that were a melding of the immigrants coming from outside the country, so many different sounds from vaudeville, early film musicals, nightclub music, vibraphone. I just find it very rich and never tired of it for a minute in 20 years of playing it and even more years of researching and collecting things.” Raised in San Bernardino during the 1970s, Klein’s early musical education came from her father Stephen Klein, a teacher and avant-garde animator whose taste ran primarily to Frank Zappa and classical. Even more importantly, Klein’s grandparents regaled her with tales of New York of the 1930s (where her grandfather Marty Klein had worked as a stage magician), instilling in her a lifelong fascination with pre-World War II American popular culture. By the time Klein had moved to Los Angeles to start college in the early 1980s, this had translated into an interest in both early jazz recordings and the graphic design styles of the era. Through the former, Klein discovered early female jazz singers and musicians including Lil Hardin Armstrong (Louis’ wife and early manager) and Blanche Calloway (sister of Cab). The latter hobby led Klein to start collecting sheet music from the 1800s to the Jazz Age, at first purely for the pictures and artwork, then increasingly 18 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.21.19
out of love for the songs themselves. Klein recorded her debut album “Come Into My Parlor” in 1998 as almost a solo record, with her vocals and ukulele occasionally backed by John Reynolds’ guitar and producer Robert Loveless’ accordion, mandolin, harmonica and triangle. She then started recruiting for members of the Parlor Boys. They have spent the past two decades recording seven more albums and playing all over Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as Japan, and had a long-running monthly residency at the now-shuttered Steve Allen Theatre. “I think the audience is growing,” notes Klein. “People are coming around who are attracted to me, there are more bands in this style of music and people are learning dances from this period. “I started all this without the benefit of finding things online and now there’s so much access,” she adds. “With a little curiosity you can find all sorts of films, type in sheet music and hear the recording of it and people coming up are interested in it. It’ll hang in there, maybe not as the mainstream but there’s people finding it now and enjoying it. Every time I do get a chance to travel, I scratch the surface of this time and era and I always find that fantastic material, no matter where I go looking.” n Janet Klein and The Parlor Boys perform at 7 p.m. Sat. at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Tickets are $20. Call (626) 798-6236 or visit coffeegallery.com.

FREE FAMILY-FRIENDLY CONCERT BY CHICANO-JAROCHO QUARTET CAMBALACHE AT PASADENA CENTRAL LIBRARY
N
o tickets will be needed for the Pasadena Folk Music Society’s next offering: a free concert by Chicano-jarocho quartet Cambalache at the Pasadena Central Library late Saturday morning. The concert represents a change of pace for the Pasadena Folk Music Society, which traditionally hosts concerts on the Caltech campus. Organizers hope that Cambalache will appeal not only to the Folk Music Society’s usual singer-songwriter and Celtic-loving crowd, but also to a younger audience and families with children. That conveniently fits with Cambalache’s musical mission. Emerging from East LA in 2007, Cambalache (translation: “exchange”) likes to involve audiences, especially the kids who can often be seen swaying alongside adults at the edge of the stage. Veracruz-born frontman César Castro tells stories (in English, though the band sings in Spanish) about the provenance of traditional songs like “El Siquisiri,” “El Buscapié” and “La Iguana” that form the bulk of their sets, part of his heartfelt effort to enlighten au-
diences about son jarocho’s roots and the communal significance of fandangos. The music’s happy polyrhythmic pulse is compelling enough, but learning how far songs traveled, and the human circumstances that led to their creation, deepens their meaning. A trained luthier, Castro often talks about their instruments too — especially the jarana, which is integral to the sound and character of son jarocho, an exuberant merging of African, Spanish, and Caribbean indigenous rhythms and instrumentation that was birthed in Veracruz. The eightstring, guitar-shaped piece with the jangle-piercing tone is sometimes referred to as la costilla del diablo, or the devil’s rib bone, by upholders of the status quo who frown upon music being transformed into a vehicle for social messaging. Castro was immersed in the movement of jarana players, or jaraneros, in Veracruz in the early 2000s, and the goodwill-fostering collaborations that developed between son jarocho and Chicano artists there and in Southern California; he subsequently migrated to LA and married Xiochi
Flores, who plays jarana, sings, and sometimes dances onstage. Like them, electric guitarist/jaranero Chuy Sandoval and electric upright bassist Juan Perez also have long-standing ties to son jarocho. In recent years they’ve moved from taqueria and bar gigs to schools, theaters, and other community institutions where they can better demonstrate the importance of keeping traditional music and culture alive as well as the broader value of understanding history. In spirit and message, son jarocho honors community; in its celebration of heritage, it resists forgetting its roots in slavery and forced migration — and the essential joys of family and reunion. Some may consider that resistance, but in truth, it is essential to understanding the present. n Pasadena Folk Music Society and the Pasadena Public Library present Cambalache at the Pasadena Central Library’s Donald Wright Auditorium, 285 E. Walnut St., Pasadena, at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23; free admission. Info: (626) 744-4066. loscambalache.com, pasadenafolkmusicsociety.org, cityofpasadena.net/library/ branches/central-library/

MASTER SLIDE GUITAR PLAYER BURTON ZIMMER, WHO ALONG WITH HIS BAND WILL BE PLAYING TUESDAY AT THE MIXX IN PASADENA, WAS BORN IN BUFFALO BUT RAISED IN SOUTHERN CAL, WHERE AT AGE 15 HE TAUGHT HIMSELF HOW TO PLAY HIS SIGNATURE INSTRUMENT. A quick study, Zimmer was playing in various bands and at clubs around the area at age 19. He enhanced his musical education by enrolling in Musician’s Institute in 1990, where he studied with masters of the craft, including Scott Henderson, Norman Brown and Steve Travato, among others. Zimmer graduated with honors and was quickly hired to play guitar on the soundtrack for the ABC Movie of the Week, “Ride with the Wind,” starring Craig T. Nelson. From there, he cut his first CD in 2000, going on to record four in all. TERRY ALLEN & THE PANHANDLE MYSTERY BAND, Pedal Steal + Four Corners (Paradise of Bachelors): HHHH
The idiosyncratic Texas songwriter and visual artist’s music pairs with Sam Shepard plays like lime goes with tequila; but the noir-ish radio plays comprising his “Four Corners” suite — 1986’s Vietnam-set horror tale “Torso,” 1990’s “Bleeder,” 1992’s “Reunion (A Return to Juarez)” and 1993’s “Dugout” — are Allen’s own. Originally broadcast on NPR, they’re finally released here (1985’s “Pedal Steal,” previously issued by Sugar Hill, was composed for a dance production). They’re animated by Allen’s mordant wit, dusty twang, scenic songs, kleptomaniac cattle queens, suicidal musicians, migrants, conmen, pill poppers, prostitutes, wayward sailors, and players including Butch Hancock, Rolling Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys, and inestimable narrator (and 1960s-era KPCC host) Jo Harvey Allen. Poetic aphorisms abound (“All good luck has death in it”) in this two-and-a-half hour package, and it’s all pungently, beautifully weird. terryallen.bandcamp.com, terryallenartmusic.com
IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE, Doko Mien (Merge): HHH½
An infectious pick-me-up from the adventurous London-based octet that crosswires electropop, West African highlife, disco and pop. Nigerianraised frontwoman Eno Williams brings in more English lyrics than were heard on 2017’s “Uyai,” and the synth-heavy, polyrhythmic groove of tracks such as “I Need You to Be Sweet Like Sugar (Nnge Nte Suka)” and especially “Wanna Come Down” is magnetic. Other highlights: “I Know That You’re Thinking About Me,” “She Work Very Hard,” dreamy ballad “Guess We Found a Way.” ibibiosoundmachine.com

THE SH-BOOMS, The Blurred Odyssey (Limited Fanfare): HHH
“Sleep when you’re dead” could be a mantra of these gritty Orlando soul-rockers and the hardcharging characters of standout tracks like the “Shaft”-saluting “Leon the Hustle” and “Detox to Retox.” Aspiration’s a recurring theme, trumpeted with fiery brio by frontwoman Brenda Radney; would that she was given more opportunity for old-school wailing like “Audible” and the magnetic “Walk It Off” (“Let me start to spread my wings”). CHATHAM COUNTY LINE, Sharing the Covers (Yep Roc): HHH
The versatile North Carolina string band doesn’t reinvent but instead inhabits 13 familiar tunes in ways evidencing respect for and occasionally the influence of the original composers (including Beck, the Rolling Stones, the Stanley Brothers, the Ventures, and Wilco). Woolly harmonies extend the melancholy of John Lennon’s “Watching the Wheels”; the suavity of James Hunter’s “People Gonna Talk” is similarly mellowed, while bluegrass chops drive Leo Kottke’s “Bumblebee” harder. Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels” best fits their independent spirit. chathamcountyline.com 20 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.21.19

RAPPER TOO $HORT CELEBRATES 35 YEARS IN THE MUSIC GAME WITH A SHOW TONIGHT AT THE ROSE BY CARL KOZLOWSKI There are few rappers who have managed to maintain a thriving career for more than a few years at a time. Most — think acts like Nas, Nelly or 50 Cent — catch on in popularity for four or five years at best, while others like the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur were killed before their time in the ridiculous East Coast-West Coast rap feuds of the 1990s. Ice Cube has lasted more than 30 years but has long been propelled by his movie stardom, and Eminem celebrates two decades on top this year. Yet surprisingly, Too $hort is one other veteran rapper who has outlasted them all, having recorded and toured since 1983 — and he’ll be headlining a show at 9 p.m. tonight, March 21, at the Rose in Pasadena. Born in Los Angeles as Todd Shaw, the rap star based his stage name on his teenage nickname of Too Short, which he earned because of his 5-foot 2-inch stature. While his success has been rooted in extremely graphic raps about sex and street life, his middle-class upbringing as the son of two accountants and ongoing close relationship with his mother have
underscored the fact that he draws a strict line between his professional image and his personal life. “We’re good friends, always have been. We never had a strain in our relationship at all,” he told Vibe magazine writer Laura Jamison about his mother in 1994. “But I get really uncomfortable when I know my mother’s in the crowd. She’ll come to me after and say,’You got a foul mouth.’” Shaw first became enamored of the pimp lifestyle and imagery by watching blaxploitation films and listening to Richard Pryor’s comedy albums as a teen. He first moved to Oakland to establish his rap career because of its more “ghetto” image, and relocated to his present base in Atlanta after racking up several platinum albums by 1995. $hort’s first recordings were known as “Freaky Tales” he created while still in high school, described by Enyclopedia.com as “strung together vignettes of his alleged sexual escapades with a seemingly endless supply of insatiable women.” Rather than wait to be discovered, he and his friend Freddy B. produced and manufactured their tapes at home and then sold them on the
sidewalks of Oakland. When one of their tapes managed to sell 20,000 copies — an almost unheard-of figure for a purely selfdistributing artist —Too $hort was signed by major rap label Jive just four years after he began his quest for success. The label promised never to censor his content, allowing him full creative control that has been both a boon and a drag for his career. On the one hand, his raps have typically been too dirty to garner airplay that could fuel even greater success, despite the fact that his only two radio hits ever were songs that focused on socioeconomic issues rather than heated misogyny. On the other, he has impressed even many of his critics with his business sense, knowing that the audience base he’s worked hard to achieve might abandon him if he cleaned up his act too consistently. Curious music lovers can decide for themselves tonight. n Too $hort performs at 9 p.m. tonight, March 21, at the Rose, 245 E. Green St., Pasadena. Tickets are $38 to $58.Call (888) 645-5006 or visit wheremusicmeetsthesoul.com.

JORDAN PEELE’S ‘US’ WILL HAVE AUDIENCES WISHING THEY COULD GET OUT OF THE THEATER
J
ordan Peele had established himself as a comedic force to be reckoned with during five seasons of the Comedy Central sketch series “Key and Peele.” When that show came to an end, probably the last thing anyone ever expected he would do is give up acting and start writing and directing horror thrillers. Yet, that’s exactly what he did with “Get Out,” the 2017 film that brilliantly melded Hitchcockian suspense with moments of sheer terror and quite a few belly laughs from sharp racial-tension satire. The result was a massive hit, earning $173 million domestically with a $9 million budget and a Best Picture nomination, as well as a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Peele. Now he’s back with his follow-up effort “Us,” which Peele has promised to be even more terrifying and somewhat less focused on gaining laughs. The big question is, can he pull off anywhere near the same level of success this time? Unfortunately, despite some great elements, it’s a big disappointment — and even more sadly, the biggest part of its problems is its largely illogical screenplay. The film starts off in 1986 as we see a young African-American girl named Adelaide wander off from her parents at the famously creepy Santa Cruz Boardwalk’s amusement park during the weekend of the Hands Across America anti-hunger fundraiser. She enters a house of mirrors and stumbles into a reflection of herself that scares her so much that she is unable to speak for weeks afterward. Cut to present day and Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) is a beautiful and seemingly confident wife to her husband Gabe (Winston Duke), mother to preteen daughter Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) and son Jason (Evan Alex). Gabe insists on taking the family to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and the childhood vacation house of Adelaide, unaware of her past trauma there. 24 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.21.19
Adelaide warily goes along with the trip, but keeps noticing that things seem “off” everywhere she looks. And on their first night in the house, Gabe notices a family of four in the shadows on the edge of their driveway. When he tries to scare them off, they instead rampage toward the house, setting off a night of abject terror that is heightened when the family realizes their attackers are also their ruthlessly evil doppelgangers. This may sound like a cool premise, and the trailers have had “Get Out” fans buzzing with excitement for weeks. But the problem is, once Peele establishes the setup of a decent family forced to confront their literal dark side, it really doesn’t go anywhere for far too long. Instead, viewers are treated to a seemingly unending series of chases and fights in which both families use all manner of household objects to pummel, stab and otherwise puncture each other in hideous and sometimes funny ways. When they realize that their only nearby friends have also been attacked by evil versions of themselves, the tension and mystery should become more intriguing. Instead, it literally goes nowhere, until after at least an hour of mayhem. Then Adelaide finally goes back into the haunted house of mirrors and uncovers the truth of what’s been happening all along. The answers are confusing and illogical at best, and disappointingly ridiculous at worst, giving audiences almost literally nothing to care about. This is a stunning fall for Peele, who’s trying to make a commentary about our light and dark sides, as well as class warfare, but it has none of the punch and effectiveness of “Get Out.” In fact, by the end you’ll be wishing you had just decided to get out and enjoy life in the real world instead. n

NOTICE OF PUBLIC NOTICE Zoning Code Amendment Relating to Regulation of Sexually Oriented Businesses
SUBJECT: On March 4, 2019, City Council adopted an amendment to Title 5, Chapter 5.45 of the Pasadena Municipal Code (PMC) to update business license and regulations relating to sexually oriented businesses. Prior to this, the sexually oriented business provisions in the PMC had not been updated since 2006. Changes in the law that apply to such businesses, and in the sexually oriented business industry itself, require an update and modernization of the PMC sections that govern these uses. Amendments are being proposed to the sexually oriented business provisions in Title 17 (Zoning Code) to bring the Zoning Code into consistency with the recently adopted Title 5 amendments. PROJECT LOCATION: All properties within the City of Pasadena. ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: The City Council will consider whether adoption of the proposed Zoning Code Amendment is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) under Section 15061(b)(3), the ìgeneral ruleî that CEQA applies only to projects which have the potential for causing a significant effect
on the environment, and that where it can be seen with certainty that there is no possibility that the activity in question may have a significant effect on the environment, the activity is not subject to CEQA. Since the proposed activity would not expand the locations in which these land uses may locate beyond what is currently allowed, there is no possibility that the amendments will have a significant effect on the environment. Planning Commission Recommendation: On February 27, 2019, the Planning Commission reviewed the proposed Zoning Code Amendment and recommended that the City Council find that the Zoning Code Text Amendment is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to the CEQA Guidelines Section 15061(b)(3) and adopt the proposed amendment. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City Council will hold a public hearing to receive testimony, oral and written, on the proposed amendments to adult business provisions in Title 17 (Zoning Code).
