SURVIVING CORONAVIRUS School closings, sports event cancellations, food hoarding . . . We live in a new coronavirus-induced world. Yet some personal health facts remain unchanged. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers good advice for preventing community spread and personal infection: apply social distancing, sanitize surfaces, wash your hands, don’t touch your face. But, there’s more . . . Does anyone wonder why uncounted numbers of infected people develop no symptoms and only 20 percent of symptomatic people require hospitalization? It’s because they have an effective immune system able to fight off the virus. But the CDC does not talk about that, perhaps for fear of offending powerful animal food industries. Fortunately, good advice on boosting our immune system is readily available on the internet from trusted sources like WebMD and Healthline. And the advice is always the same: * Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, including citrus fruits and leafy greens * Refrain from dairy, other fatty animal products, and sugar-laden foods * Maintain daily exercise of 30-60 minutes * Minimize your stress level and get adequate sleep Did I mention that this advice works great for all other nasty bugs as well? ~VICTOR CASTANZA VIA EMAIL
The president is supposed to protect and defend the Constitution and the people — never to attack them! He must answer the people’s call and give them the medical supplies and answers they are pleading for. This is no time for him to bark with anger at the people and tell them, “...the federal government is not a shipping clerk.” OK, well, Mr. President, the White House is not the set of a reality show or one of your casinos. With all those portraits of presidents past in the White House, you are sitting in the shadow of a greatness which you cannot ever hope to achieve! ~PHILIP A. LEFCOURT PASADENA
DEFINITION OF INSANITY
Re: “PW rides along with Pasadena Police Department’s Homeless OutreachPsychiatric Evaluation team,” March 11 I read the sad article of how Registered Nurse Guillermo Vasquez and Officer Donovan Jones are reaching out to the homeless. I personally reported to City Manager Steve Mermell the situation with Amanda Ross who is homeless and in a wheelchair. Apparently he did follow up as your article

seems to bear out. The problem is that the city leaders, outreach workers, police, etc use the same talking points. They all restate that they cannot enforce panhandling because it is not illegal. They cannot force people with severe mental and/or physical conditions into shelter. Your article states that Vasquez is frustrated because so many refuse help. But they will keep trying, hoping that things will change. This is almost verbatim what I was told by Mr. Mermell. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different is the definition of insanity. Does the city really believe that at some point the homeless will have a miraculous revelation and start accepting help? Anyone can see this is just wishful thinking. The city needs to evaluate those in mental and physical distress and start placing them into shelters or medical facilities. We are in the midst of a corona virus and those who are positive don’t have the choice to accept or deny help. They are quarantined. This should be a wake up call to all of us. Hopefully we will eventually get past the coronavirus pandemic, but if we don’t learn from this we will just be waiting for the next pandemic of typhoid or some other fatal disease because we were more worried about the feelings of the homeless rather than protecting our community. ~WILLIAM MASTREANO PASADENA

MISSING IN ACTION
PAPARIAN WITHDRAWS SUPPORT FROM MAYOR TORNEK OVER TORNEK’S ABSENCE FROM CRITICAL MEETING ON CITY’S RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS
N
othing tests a person’s character or judgment like a crisis. My parents taught me this. The day after Pearl Harbor, my father enlisted in the Marines and my mother joined the Red Cross. As idealistic teenagers, they answered a call to duty that, happily, also led to their meeting and falling in love in a military hospital. Years later, while serving as a Pasadena Mayor and City Council member, I always kept their example of selfless duty in mind as I conducted the public’s business. That’s why I am so disappointed in the astounding lack of judgment, moral character and civic leadership demonstrated by our current Mayor Terry Tornek. When the city needed him the most, he was AWOL. The crisis that has exposed these flaws, of course, is the coronavirus. Unlike the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, everyone has seen COVID-19 coming for weeks. Yet, amazingly, while officials from Pasadena to Washington, DC were scrambling to keep citizens safe, Tornek announced on March 2 he would keep his plans for a 10-day junket to our “sister city” in Senegal. As one of Tornek’s supporters during the primary, I sent him an email urging him to postpone the trip and instead go to Washington to lobby for coronavirus emergency funding and supplies for our Health Department. He never responded to that suggestion and — the day after chairing a council meeting during which health officials laid out the coming crisis in chilling detail — instead went on that ceremonial trip for 10 days just when Pasadena needed his leadership the most. While he sent out occasional press releases saying he was “closely monitoring” the situation from 6,300 miles away, his actions — or lack of them — showed otherwise. As his colleagues frantically tried to arrange a special meeting over the March 14-15 weekend, he repeatedly told them he would be unavailable, delaying the meeting and wasting precious time. When the council, in his absence, arranged for a special meeting on March 17 to ratify the city manager’s emergency declaration, Tornek was nowhere to be found. Minutes of the special meeting, where the council approved a number of emergency measures, will forever show our mayor was MIA for these crucial votes. Unfortunately, Tornek’s civic recklessness didn’t stop there. After he returned home from intercontinental travel, he refused to go into self-quarantine, as advised by national, state and our own Pasadena health experts. Instead, eager to “inoculate” himself from any public criticism, Tornek joined Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger at a televised press conference, potentially exposing them and everyone else to COVID-19. I am not alone in expressing outrage over Tornek’s irresponsible, let-them-eat-cake behavior during perhaps our greatest crisis. This isn’t political. This transcends politics. I supported Tornek in the primary election, and I’m shocked and appalled at his brazen dereliction of duty. What we’ve needed is good, old-fashioned leadership by example — the kind that I learned through example from my parents, by training when I was a young Marine NCO and during 12 years of public service, including two years sitting in the mayor’s chair. By any measure, military or civilian, Terry Tornek has failed the most important leadership test brought on by this unprecedented crisis. Based on this, and after careful consideration and discussion with my wife Sona, I have decided to withdraw my endorsement of Mayor Tornek for the run-off election. We will be supporting his opponent, who was one of two council members who actually showed up in person for the special meeting. I am switching for one reason alone: Tornek has failed miserably to set the proper example as the current elected leader of our city. When we needed him most, Terry Tornek didn’t show up. n 03.26.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

‘UNCHARTED TERRITORY’ COVID-19 FORCES RESTAURANTS TO FURLOUGH STAFF AND TURN TO DELIVERY AND TAKE-OUT TO MAKE ENDS MEET BY MATT RODRIGUEZ AND KEVIN UHRICH
I
t may seem like the end of the world, now that even more restrictive emergency measures aimed at battling a quickly spreading coronavirus have been ordered by Gov. Gavin Newsom, as well as Los Angeles County and Pasadena leaders. But Pasadena businesses — primarily the city’s bread-and- butter dining industry and its thriving health and fitness merchants — aren’t licked yet, said Pasadena Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Paul Little. “Everyone, individuals, businesses, nonprofits and health care providers, are being strained by the epidemic,” Little noted in a message emailed to members on Thursday. “While absolutely necessary to ensure the health of our residents, closure orders for restaurants, entertainment venues, meeting spaces, fitness studios and more are having a drastic and negative impact on our business community and their employees,” Little wrote. The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, as of March 23, had infected 332,930 people and killed 14,510 in countries around the world. Italy recently surpassed China with the most deaths at 5,476. The United States had 33,404 cases and 400 deaths from coronavirus. In California, there were 1,733 confirmed cases and 27 deaths. In Los Angeles County, there were 536 cases and seven deaths, with six confirmed infections in Pasadena. Governor Gavin Newsom warned that more than 25 million Californians may become infected. In an attempt to “flatten the curve” and stem the spread of the virus, the nation, state and county have implemented “stay at home” orders for millions. Many of these restrictions have severely dampened revenue for many businesses, especially restaurants, a mainstay of Pasadena’s economy. The “Safer at Home” order implemented by Los Angeles County health officials forces restaurants to close their dining rooms and to only serve take-out orders and offer delivery service. This has led restaurants, such as Raymond 1886, to dramatically change their business and cut staff. “We just started it. we traditionally have not been a delivery and take-out,” said Rob Levy, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Leslie Levy. Their business has lost revenue because of the restrictions, forcing them to furlough 42 employees, some of whom have been working at the restaurant for decades. “We have basically four employees right now,” said Leslie. “We have two managers that we’re keeping on and two chefs, and that’s it.” Even businesses, such as the Green Street Restaurant in the South Lake Avenue Business District, which have offered delivery in the past, are struggling with the repercussions of COVID-19. Green Street Restaurant operated on essentially three income sources: dining, catering and take-out/delivery. 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.26.20
Now the restaurant relies on the sole income of take-out/delivery. “Mom and pops especially run very tight to the vest and then your cash is yanked out from underneath you... it’s very, very difficult” said Michael Hawkins, one of the restaurant’s owners. Even though the business is going through a rough patch, Hawkins and his partners still try to take care of their staff, spreading the hours around the cooks and staff so their employees can still make some money. They also gave their staff a $50 food voucher for the restaurant. While these restaurants try to make it, many of their patrons and customers have supported them by buying gift cards to use after the restrictions are lifted. “People are buying gift certificates to use later on down the road, just as a sign of support,” said Kathleen Meymarian, owner of Kathleen’s on North Lake Avenue. Meymarian has taken similar steps to Hawkins’, cutting back on staff but still trying to keep as many of her employees as possible on the job. Even with the reduction of operation costs, Meymarian and the other restaurants are still fearful that they will have to close their doors. She echoes the same concerns many other restaurants have voiced during this unparalleled period. “We’ve been here for 38 years and we’ve never seen anything like this — this is uncharted territory,” said Meymarian. “We are definitely stressed out and fearful. We’re just hoping with reduced staff and operating costs and with [the revenue] that’s coming in will be able to sustain us, so we can keep the doors open. We’re not sure yet, but we’re very hopeful — but, again, we’re extremely scared.” The prospect of closing is a very possible reality for restaurants if they do not receive enough support at this time. “The hope is we continue to encourage people to patronize and support the businesses they have always patronized and supported, in one way or another,” Little said. “Even if they are not open, you can buy a gift card now and that may mean they open up for customers again when these orders are lifted.” In neighboring Glendale, which also has a thriving restaurant component to its municipal economy, leaders are reaching out to their constituents and others to help merchants survive the pandemic. “Dine-in food service is currently prohibited, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still order your favorite meals for pick up or delivery,” recently elected City Councilman Ardy Kassakhian wrote in an email. Kassakhian formerly served as Glendale’s city clerk, an elected post in that community. “Many of the restaurants in our city rely on our support to stay in business, and I encourage you to support the same restaurants during this time,” he wrote. n

FACT VS. FICTION
TEN MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE 1918 FLU, THE ‘GREATEST PANDEMIC IN HISTORY’ BY RICHARD GUNDERMAN
P
andemic: It’s a scary word. But the world has seen pandemics before, and worse ones, too. Consider the influenza pandemic of 1918, often referred to erroneously as the “Spanish flu.” Misconceptions about it may be fueling unfounded fears about COVID-19, and now is an especially good time to correct them. In the pandemic of 1918, between 50 and 100 million people are thought to have died, representing as much as 5 percent of the world’s population. Half a billion people were infected. Especially remarkable was the 1918 flu’s predilection for taking the lives of otherwise healthy young adults, as opposed to children and the elderly, who usually suffer most. Some have called it the greatest pandemic in history. The 1918 flu pandemic has been a regular subject of speculation over the last century. Historians and scientists have advanced numerous hypotheses regarding its origin, spread and consequences. As a result, many harbor misconceptions about it. By correcting these 10 misconceptions, everyone can better understand what actually happened and help mitigate COVID-19’s toll. 1. The pandemic originated in Spain No one believes the so-called “Spanish flu” originated in Spain. The pandemic likely acquired this nickname because of World War I, which was in full swing at the time. The major countries involved in the war were keen to avoid encouraging their enemies, so reports of the extent of the flu were suppressed in Germany, Austria, France, the United Kingdom and the US. By contrast, neutral Spain had no need to keep the flu under wraps. That created the false impression that Spain was bearing the brunt of the disease. In fact, the geographic origin of the flu is debated to this day, though hypotheses have suggested East Asia, Europe and even Kansas. 2. The pandemic was the result of a “super-virus” The 1918 flu spread rapidly, killing 25 million people in just the first six months. This led some to fear the end of mankind, and has long fueled the supposition that the strain of influenza was particularly lethal. However, more recent study suggests that the virus itself, though more lethal than other strains, was not fundamentally different from those that caused epidemics in other years. Much of the high death rate can be attributed to crowding in military camps and urban environments, as well as poor nutrition and sanitation, which suffered during wartime. It’s now thought that many of the deaths were due to the development of bacterial pneumonias in lungs weakened by influenza. 3. The first wave of the pandemic was most lethal Actually, the initial wave of deaths from the pandemic in the first half of 1918 was relatively low. It was in the second wave, from October through December of that year, that the highest death rates were observed. A third wave in spring of 1919 was more lethal than the first but less so than the second. Scientists now believe that the marked increase in deaths in the second wave was caused by conditions that favored the spread of a deadlier strain. People with mild cases stayed home, but those with severe cases were often crowded together in hospitals and camps, increasing transmission of a more lethal form of the virus. 4. The virus killed most people who were infected with it In fact, the vast majority of the people who contracted the 1918 flu survived. National death rates among the infected generally did not exceed 20 percent. However, death rates varied among different groups. In the US, deaths were particularly high among Native American populations, perhaps due to lower rates of exposure to past strains of influenza. In some cases, entire Native communities were wiped out. Of course, even a 20 percent death rate vastly exceeds a typical flu, which kills less than 1 percent of those infected.
5. Therapies of the day had little impact on the disease No specific anti-viral therapies were available during the 1918 flu. That’s still largely true today, where most medical care for the flu aims to support patients, rather than cure them. One hypothesis suggests that many flu deaths could actually be attributed to aspirin poisoning. Medical authorities at the time recommended large doses of aspirin of up to 30 grams per day. Today, about four grams would be considered the maximum safe daily dose. Large doses of aspirin can lead to many of the pandemic’s symptoms, including bleeding. However, death rates seem to have been equally high in some places in the world where aspirin was not so readily available, so the debate continues. 6. The pandemic dominated the day’s news Public health officials, law enforcement officers and politicians had reasons to underplay the severity of the 1918 flu, which resulted in less coverage in the press. In addition to the fear that full disclosure might embolden enemies during wartime, they wanted to preserve public order and avoid panic. However, officials did respond. At the height of the pandemic, quarantines were instituted in many cities. Some were forced to restrict essential services, including police and fire. 7. The pandemic changed the course of World War I It’s unlikely that the flu changed the outcome of World War I, because combatants on both sides of the battlefield were relatively equally affected. However, there is little doubt that the war profoundly influenced the course of the pandemic. Concentrating millions of troops created ideal circumstances for the development of more aggressive strains of the virus and its spread around the globe. 8. Widespread immunization ended the pandemic Immunization against the flu was not practiced in 1918, and thus played no role in ending the pandemic. Exposure to prior strains of the flu may have offered some protection. For example, soldiers who had served in the military for years suffered lower rates of death than new recruits. In addition, the rapidly mutating virus likely evolved over time into less lethal strains. This is predicted by models of natural selection. Because highly lethal strains kill their host rapidly, they cannot spread as easily as less lethal strains. 9. The genes of the virus have never been sequenced In 2005, researchers announced that they had successfully determined the gene sequence of the 1918 influenza virus. The virus was recovered from the body of a flu victim buried in the permafrost of Alaska, as well as from samples of American soldiers who fell ill at the time. Two years later, monkeys infected with the virus were found to exhibit the symptoms observed during the pandemic. Studies suggest that the monkeys died when their immune systems overreacted to the virus, a so-called “cytokine storm.” Scientists now believe that a similar immune system overreaction contributed to high death rates among otherwise healthy young adults in 1918. 10. The world is no better prepared today than it was in 1918 Severe epidemics tend to occur every few decades, and the latest one is upon us. Today scientists know more about how to isolate and handle large numbers of ill and dying patients, and physicians can prescribe antibiotics, not available in 1918, to combat secondary bacterial infections. To such common-sense practices as social distancing and hand-washing, contemporary medicine can add the creation of vaccinations and anti-viral drugs. For the foreseeable future, viral epidemics will remain a regular feature of human life. As a society, we can only hope that we have learned the great pandemic’s lessons sufficiently well to quell the current COVID-19 challenge. n This is an updated version of a story that originally ran in The Conversation on Jan. 11, 2018. 'TIP OF THE ICEBERG'
CALTECH TRUSTEE DAVID HO SAYS SOLUTION COULD BE TWO YEARS AWAY; CALLS LACK OF COVID-19 TESTING 'EMBARRASSING' AND 'AN OUTRIGHT FAILURE IN LEADERSHIP'
BY LORI DAJOSE
A
s of March 23, more than 15,374 people worldwide had died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Caltech trustee David Ho (BS '74) of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, Columbia University, says that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Ho, an expert on viral epidemics, has spent decades researching HIV/AIDS, having begun his career in Los Angeles, "ground zero" of the first outbreak, in the early 1980s. On March 18, Ho sat down with members of the Caltech community to discuss the novel coronavirus and the future of our society in the light of this global pandemic. Walk us through the spread of the virus in the United States. What does the country look like right now? Let me just give you a picture of what I see here in New York. About two weeks ago, we had our initial case, and now in New York City newly diagnosed confirmed cases are tripling every two days. In our New York Presbyterian Hospital, approximately 25 percent of the swab samples that are submitted for testing are positive. In the suburban communities outside of New York, approximately 10 percent of the swabs submitted are positive. So, the virus is everywhere. And in New York, we know that we are in the exponential growth phase of the epidemic. Looking back at what has transpired throughout the world, we saw the first wave hit China; the second wave hit South Korea, Italy, and Iran; and then, trailed by only about a week or so, France, Germany, Spain, and the US. We all know that China went through a period of great devastation. It has over 80,000 cases. Italy is rapidly catching up, with over 31,000 cases. We suspect that in the US this will rapidly sweep from the coastal regions and it will hit middle America. It is already there, but we will see exponential growth very, very soon. Then of course we are all worried about what would happen when this epidemic strikes places like Africa and India where the health care system is less developed. Can you tell us about the pathology of the disease? COVID-19 typically causes fever and a dry cough. One may have aches in the body — the muscles — and if it's severe enough, there would be shortness of breath due to pneumonia. Gastrointestinal symptoms can occur and are an indication of more severe disease. It's not very common to have a runny nose or the sniffles, and a sore throat is not common either. The incubation period from exposure to onset of symptoms is between four and six days; and if you want to cover 95–98 percent of the cases it is between three and 10 days. It's pretty rare to have an incubation period outside of that range. What in particular makes this virus so dangerous? What is disturbing is that virus shedding, as detected in the mouth or nose, is very, very common and could be there prior to onset of symptoms. That's why transmission could occur from asymptomatic individuals. And virus shedding could continue for days up to three weeks after a person recovers. That is extremely worrisome for the spread of this virus. Furthermore, the stability of 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.26.20
this virus is worrisome as well. If you put it in aerosol form and keep it in the air, the half-life is several hours; if you drop it on surfaces of copper or cardboard, it could survive about a day. But if it's on steel or plastic surfaces, you could still detect infectious virus after 72 hours, although the infectivity decreases with time. What do we know about the biology of the virus? The virus is highly related to another coronavirus called SARS coronavirus. That was another outbreak that occurred worldwide 17-18 years ago, and largely in China and Asia. The two viruses are about 80 percent identical. We know the origin of SARS was from a bat through an intermediary animal called the civet cat. Another virus called Middle Eastern Respiratory Virus, MERS, also originated in bats and infected camels, and camels passed it to humans. For COVID-19, we believe the original host must be a bat species, because that animal carries a virus that's 97 percent identical to what we're seeing now. Because of the SARS outbreak and the MERS outbreak, and research done on those two pathogens, we actually know quite a bit about coronaviruses. The outbreak began in China; how have they been dealing with the virus? This epidemic was first identified in a few cases with pneumonia in December 2019. In retrospect, there were scattered cases in November, according to Chinese officials. I would say that initially there were missteps and lack of transparency that contributed to the explosive outbreak in the city of Wuhan in the central province of Hubei. That epidemic in central China accounts for 85 percent of the confirmed cases in China. It led Beijing officials to quarantine the entire province of 50 million people. The epidemic peaked in early February with 4,000 newly diagnosed cases each day. But since the lockdown and the various draconian measures applied, the number of new cases each day has been declining by half every week, and remarkably it's now down to about 20 per day. The rest of China's other provinces also applied very harsh measures and they indeed successfully flattened the curve outside of Hubei province. We know what they've done is not sustainable and the question is: What is China going to do now if it relaxes the infection control measures? Some of the recovered patients are still shedding virus and now China is surrounded by sick neighbors. Surely if they open up their borders, infection will come in the same way it came into the US. The world is waiting to see what China is going to do. Now in terms of the US, we obviously are undergoing exponential growth. The 10,400 confirmed cases is a gross underestimate. The lack of testing is embarrassing. It's an outright failure in leadership. What are the tests we need to detect coronavirus infection? Everybody's talking about testing and that's actually referring to PCR [polymerase chain reaction] testing, looking for viral RNA to determine whether a person is infected. But there's still no talk of antibody testing to determine which people have had it and are immune, and that is another crucial tool we need to combat this epidemic. Many research labs throughout the country — I'm sure at Caltech too — could be running antibody tests right now to survey the population
and tell us what the real penetrance of this pathogen is in our communities. We are, on a research basis, embarking on that to understand the degree of infection in New York City and outside of New York City. How long before the US sees test availability similar to what South Korea has implemented? The PCR testing, which is the one that's approved, is now ramping up very, very rapidly in state and local labs as well as in academic medical centers and in the commercial sector. Their production will grow tremendously. Roche has a machine that will run 1,000 samples at a time. If you go to a commercial lab, they take a swab, they package it, they quite often send it to another facility somewhere else. The turnaround time is typically 72 hours. In that period, it's very, very hard to manage patients and their contacts. It's a nightmare for the health care worker. We need point-of-care tests. Those kinds of tests are available for HIV and for many other diseases; you use a finger stick, drop the blood on a small device, and have a readout in 15 minutes. These tests measure antibody response to the virus and are extremely useful. Yet we don't have a single test licensed in the U.S. In China, in South Korea, and in Europe, those tests are used. The manufacturer for this rapid test is producing a million a day. It's there. But in the name of protecting the public, the FDA has moved very, very slowly. That delay, in my view, has caused more harm than good. Can you elaborate on point-of-care testing? It's almost like a home pregnancy test or home HIV test. These tests have been around for a long time. The test that I'm specifically referring to, coming out of China, South Korea, and approved in Europe, is an antibody test. You put a drop of blood on a plastic slide, add another drop of the buffer that comes with the test, and you let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, you look at the bands. You're negative if you have just one band, or you're positive if you have more than one band. The test also tells you type of antibody. There's a type of antibody called IgG [immunoglobulin G] and another type called IgM [immunoglobulin M]. Typically, when a person is infected, the IgM response is earlier and the IgG response is later. The two bands indicate the course of the infection. This kind of test is available all over the world for HIV. The technology is there, the tests are there. But they're not FDA approved. While I think they are fairly close to being approved, we have let several weeks go by and to me that's tragic. Will this coronavirus be seasonal? Everyone is asking whether this virus is here to stay. Initially, just based on what China did with SARS long ago, there was hope that warmer weather and more sunlight would help kill the virus in our environment and therefore lower the probability of transmission. But now this virus has gained such a strong foothold in the human population. It's already 25 times larger than SARS and it's already embedded in the Southern hemisphere. If you look at Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, there are cases there already, and community transmission is occurring. As the weather changes, perhaps the Northern hemisphere will gain an advantage. But the epidemic in the Southern hemisphere is going to accelerate. The long-term outcome may resemble influenza so that we have seasonal bouts, with the virus bouncing back and forth between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. This is of course just speculation, but that's what we see with influenza. Why does COVID-19 have less impact on children and more impact on the elderly? Well, the latter part is easy. Older people generally do less well with all sorts of respiratory infections, including influenza and SARS. So that's just the typical scenario we see. The children, however, are a mystery. As you know, children typically get flu or other respiratory viruses very quickly and bring them home to infect the parents. But in this particular case, the number of children infected in China, after extensive studies, don't seem to indicate that this is the case for this coronavirus. Some people seem to show mild symptoms while others have a more severe experience. Has the virus already mutated? RNA viruses all replicate with low fidelity. Mutations occur at pretty similar rates and these viruses typically don't have proofreading functions. In contrast, we replicate our DNA with high fidelity and we have a proofreading function to fix the errors. So, every time they replicate, there's a fixed rate of mutation. This virus is mutating but it has mutated very little so far. There are differences but probably they are functionally not important, so that's not the explanation for
why you see different disease courses among the infected. For HIV it's the same thing: 10 people could be infected by the same strain but you have very different outcomes. With HIV, genetics and environmental factors play a role. Some of the genetics has been worked out; we know that there are certain tissue types that would protect and others that would harm. I suspect it's the same here. Once you become infected with the virus, can you get it again? There are a few anecdotes from China about re-infection but, if you look at those reports carefully, they're not well-documented. It could be that folks just continued to shed virus from the initial infection. Only one study was formally done and it is not a human study. It's a macaque study. They infected macaques with this virus, then waited until the monkeys recovered and tried to re-infect them. They could not. This just came out in the past few days. That bodes well for human immunity. We have now looked at a lot of serum from convalescent individuals and those serum samples have antibodies against the so-called spike protein of the virus. That's the protein that sits on the surface of the virus particle. By tightly binding, the antibody could neutralize the virus. Once an infected person develops antibodies, there should be protective immunity for quite some time. That's why we need to buy time for immunity to develop in the population. After a person recovers from the virus, how long are they still contagious? That's a very important question. We're not sure; one individual in China was shown to have persistent virus shedding for over a month. But typically, we're looking at a three-week period from onset of symptoms. What should we be doing to limit the spread of this epidemic? The social distancing and good hygiene strategies have been successfully applied, in South Korea for example, to bring their epidemic down. They're the only other country that has flattened the curve — slowed down the number of new infections to not overwhelm the health care system — and gradually brought this epidemic under control. There are many places that have done a pretty good job of not allowing the epidemic to explode, such as Taiwan and Hong Kong. These are places that had quite a bit of experience in fighting SARS, 17 years ago. Are you optimistic that these measures combined with research will be enough to combat the coronavirus? I personally believe we will blunt this epidemic, but I think we wasted a good four to six weeks largely because of lack of testing and lack of a certain preparedness. But I think we could still make a difference and bring it under control with very harsh measures. But again, are these measures sustainable? We've got to expect that businesses must reopen and schools must teach again. Whether it's travel or sports or live entertainment, we're going to have to return to some semblance of normalcy. But what are the measures that are effective and sustainable? That's a question we as a society have to deal with. We need to buy time so that gradually the population will have a degree of immunity. Most importantly, we need to buy time to allow science to deliver solutions. We're going to have to develop drugs, antibodies, and vaccines. I think the mobilization by the scientific community, from my perspective, is amazing. So many people have mobilized and jumped on this and are contributing, from discovering small-molecule drugs that could block various enzymes of this virus to coming up with antibodies that could neutralize the virus. Researchers have already come up with a few promising chemicals that could be a good start to drug development. There are already a few neutralizing antibodies isolated from infected individuals; my own group is in the midst of doing all that. And, of course, people are working on vaccines. A lot of companies are working on vaccines and those vaccines are at various stages. A couple are within weeks of entering human testing and that's quite, quite remarkable. There is one thing about vaccines, though: Some of the experiments previously done on SARS suggested that when animals developed antibodies and then were given the virus, they had greater lung injury due to the presence of the antibodies. The scientific community would have to resolve that issue quickly and its resolution would either halt the current approaches or unleash them to move full speed ahead. We certainly will take a part in doing that. I think we have the real possibility that COVID-19 may become a fact of life until science comes through as it has done for past epidemics. This is going to take some time. But I'm very confident that the science will rise to the task and provide a solution. But it's not going to be a few months as our president suggests. It's going to be much longer than that. I would say 18 months, or 24 months. I think we are all facing tough challenges ahead. n 03.26.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 9

The New Normal (Part 1) TAKE-OUT QUALITY VARIES WIDELY

STORY BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ
s we should all know, as of March 15 — in the effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus locally — all bars and restaurants in Los Angeles County are closed to public gathering, limiting the businesses to take-out and delivery only. “It blind-sided all of us… and now we’re scrambling.” Chef Onil Chibas of Deluxe 1717 is ruminating over the present reality and the future prospects for his erstwhile thriving catering business. Having just canceled a lucrative contract with the Colburn School for an event in April, he muses on the future. “I think that catering is going to be dead for a while, so I need to think what would be next…” For restaurant operators, quickly pivoting to delivery and take-out was the only way to maintain staff and use perishable inventory. How sustainable this option is for any individual operation will depend on nimble decision-making, a loyal base of patrons, and actual quality and value. [As a food writer, I don’t regard myself as a “critic.” When writing about restaurants, and chefs particularly, I always focus on people and establishments that I believe deserve positive attention and popular encouragement. I have no interest in broadcasting negative attention to anyone’s business. Particularly in this time — when the very foundation of the restaurant business at large is under direct threat — 10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 03.26.20
patronage and support of local restaurants by the general public is understandably being actively encouraged. That said, this period will inevitably elicit a major “correction” to the industry in how it conducts business, once dining rooms again open. Likewise, not every establishment has managed the current quick transition to take-out and delivery effectively or elegantly.] For the benefit and enlightenment of our Pasadena Weekly readers, I will relate my recent experience of “Take-out.” Hungry and with no dinner plan, I chose a place in my neighborhood that notably also offered wine as part of its take-out options. I might have given up, when my 6:15 p.m. phone call to order went to voicemail. Instead, I left my phone number on the message and hopped into my car for the fiveminute drive east. A cheery young gentleman greeted me from six feet away at the reception desk and apologized profusely for the missed call. After asking, he offered me the menu (but not the wine list.) Yes, wine list. Ostensibly a “fine dining” restaurant — I had already dined here several times before, frankly with quite mixed experiences — I was curious how they were adapting to the new altered landscape and ordered without prejudice or expectation (despite my dismayed girlfriend’s stated misgivings.) From the weekly “Safer-at-Home” menu, I chose: Gumbo with chicken, andouille and rice ($16); Crab cakes ($18); and

“Irish coddle pork loin stew” ($26). I figured these items could be prepped quickly and might travel well. I was told the wait would be 20 minutes. Several other folks came in to pick up phone orders — one with a bottle of wine — as I waited. Thankfully, my wait was more like 10 minutes when a paper bag was handed to me and I signed off on a tab of $66.15, plus a $12 tip, for a total of $78.15. (No, I do not have an expense account.) But, my mind was still open and my stomach empty, when I unpacked the bag to face a small cardboard box and two plastic quart containers of murky liquid. No problem! Let’s eat! The two small crab cakes had more or less dissolved into their bed of overdressed coleslaw. (Still I’m always happy to eat crab and breadcrumbs in whatever format.) The quart containers were unmarked and I opened the one that was less than full thinking it might be the “soup” portion of gumbo rather than the “stew” entrée. Oddly swimming with chunks of carrot, this was the pork “stew” except it had the consistency of a thin pea soup and not a trace of pork. The “gumbo” only revealed itself with the desultory spoonful of rice at the bottom of the container. Equally thin and lifeless with only a vague hint of spice, this was barely “soup” let alone gumbo. No hint of roux, okra, or file powder. After enduring eight hours or so of the anxious tedium that comes with our new “shelter-in-place” lifestyle, getting baldly ripped off by a local eatery leaves one feeling, well, HANGRY! (My girlfriend’s reaction is unprintable.) We woke up hangry the next morning, determined to try something else. The new version of Fox’s on North Lake in Altadena had become our go-to local bistro for breakfast and lunch, as well as dinner when they began serving in the evenings, complete with a very brief and very affordable list of wines available by the glass or bottle. Hosted by the affable and ebullient
Armando Ortiz, Fox’s always provided a reliably cozy, comforting and modestly priced supper for those nights when we were otherwise incapable of assembling a meal at home. I quickly discovered they had now closed indefinitely. Not to be discouraged, I recalled that the owners/chefs of Fox’s — Paul Rosenbluh and Monique King — also owned and operated Cindy’s Diner in Eagle Rock, which they rehabbed prior to taking over Fox’s. Indeed, Cindy’s Diner was open for pickup only and I placed our order: Chicken Gumbo ($7.95); Smoked Mushroom Salad ($13.95); Reuben Sandwich ($13.25); Catfish Po-boy sandwich ($14.75); Side of Mac & Cheese ($4.75); and I swapped in fries for greens with the Po-boy ($2). The short hop to Eagle Rock was about eight minutes and soon I was chatting with Monique and Paul (from a safe distance) as they packed up my order. They are both accomplished chefs and have a successful local history together. The couple originally met at Chicago’s famed Soul Kitchen, where LA-native Monique had moved, after an extended stint with Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Millikan at City Kitchen. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Paul graduated from California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and worked at Coyote Café in Austin, Texas, before landing in Chicago and Soul Kitchen. Now a couple, they moved to LA to be closer to Monique’s family. Monique again returned to the Feniger/ Millikan camp at both locations of Border Grill and Paul settled in at Bayou Bar & Grill in Alhambra. Inspired to combine efforts with a place of their own, they opened the beloved Firefly Bistro in South Pasadena, which they ran successfully for 14 years. I was among the satisfied regulars at Firefly and was glum at its closing. Meanwhile, I had heard about the sale and “hipster” rehab of Cindy’s, along with favorable reviews. When Fox’s
opened in my neighborhood — allegedly with the Cindy’s team — I was an enthusiastic early adopter. An idle tableside chat with host Armando revealed the fact that Firefly’s King and Rosenbluh were the actual masterminds behind both places. Cozily unpretentious with reliably tasty food, both venues quickly garnered loyal fans. Needless to say, the couple have figured something out. This includes how they have managed to quickly adapt to the sudden conditions of the pandemic’s arrival here. Paul explained, “I had been anticipating a recession for the last two years…” Accordingly, he and Monique had devised a plan to weather just such a downturn. They closed Fox’s immediately and furloughed most of their employees and concentrated their operation at Cindy’s. Bills were taken off auto-pay and minimum payments go to credit balances. Monique estimated that the extended family of their affected employees number at least 80 people. Still, there is an inspired sense of determination here that suggests eventual victory over the present miseries. Back home, in the resulting splay of unpacked containers, boxes and bags, we thoroughly enjoyed a generous and satisfying lunch. The tab? Again with a 20 percent tip, the bill totaled $73.54. Roughly the same as the previous evening’s misfire but with twice the food and no residual “hanger.” Oh, and the gumbo yielded a pleasingly robust spicy heft, while the Reuben’s impressive volume sustained another lunch the next day. In all, the meal was a welcome bright spot in an otherwise typically tedious day. A boon, a balm and a blessing, a simple lunch paid for itself in comfort and satiation. Go to Cindy’s. But I miss Armando! Try to support your local favorite restaurants in any way you can. The culture is at grave threat. Chef Dave Chang has coined the truism: “Restaurants are too small to fail.” At the least, please register at saverestaurants.com. BI-CULTURAL GUITARIST GOH KUROSAWA SWINGS A MEAN AXE BY CHRISTOPHER NYERGES
V
irtuoso guitarist Goh Kurosawa has traveled the world equipped with original songs and stunning arrangements of universally beloved melodies. “Keep it simple, believe, and live every day,” says Kurosawa, who hails from Japan and has come to be known as a “musical wakonyosai,” or bi-cultural musical samurai. Ever humble, Kurosawa views himself as a world citizen who currently lives in Highland Park. Throughout his life, Kurosawa has been sharing stories and life expressions though his music, which is possibly best described as a one-man show, using his guitar, also known as Honey Bear, and voice accompanied by traditional techniques an.d modern electric pedals — broadcast to audiences from a self-contained battery-powered studio-quality public address system (powerful enough for a 2,000 square feet space in both outdoor and indoor settings). It’s quite original; a combination of electronica, world jazz, classical, reggae, and rock. The sound is so intriguing that following a recent performance at a local farmers’ market, audience members couldn’t help talking about the music, mostly trying to define it. When asked what type of music Kurosawa was playing, listeners replied with a number of different answers; acoustic, rock, jazz, dance, sit-down, tap-slap, Brazilian bossa nova, Spanish flamenco, hip-hop beats, Latin grooves, Balkan rhythms, electronica-sound-effects, prog-rock, metal, experimental, classical, and “Yamato soul,” the ancient name for his homeland. Kurosawa himself calls it simply acoustic rock jazz. Born in Maebashi, Japan, Kurosawa traveled to St. Louis at an early age to live for a few years. Though he attended several music schools, Goh says “Much of my music is inspired by traveling through countries and cultures. There is no better teacher than experience though real life world education; meeting and living with the people is the best.” With such a broad perspective it’s no wonder his musical favorites include a diverse range of artists that includes Johann Sebastian Bach (classical), Astor Piazzolla (new tango), Paco De Lucia (flamenco), Miles Davis (jazz), Jeff Buckley (mostly known for Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”), Eva Cassidy (known for “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”), Brazilian music, and Balkan music. He also includes Bruce Lee as one of his influences. But, he says, “Life’s journey is the biggest influence. Live and enjoy each moment.” Kurosawa is currently on a mission to play in one new country every year for the next three years. “I performed Myanmar in 2017 for a village school,” he says. “I was in Cuba in 2018, helped by the Japanese embassy in Havana, and in Okinawa in 2019. Awareness is everything, and flexibility and mobility is key. I realize that country borderlines were created by people mostly before our time, so my goal should be a fun and flexible one. Next year, I have plans to go to Hungary to play for the Japanese ambassador (during) the cherry blossom festival. It may or may not happen... as long as the big picture is clear, anything goes and I am happy.” Watching Kurosawa perform, you will see him embrace a single guitar to create an orchestra with drum beats, percussive grooves, bass lines, and memorable melodies. As an electric “pedalist,” he tweaks, bends and twists soundscapes. He puts on high-energy modern rock performances along with traditional elegantly powerful acoustic and classical chamber gestures. He is both quiet and loud, and

everyone seems to experience his performance in different ways, with each new sound evoking a new mood. His sets can include Bob Marley’s “No Women No Cry,” My Family My Friends” (original), a Japanese folk song, Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (which he sings) and other original compositions and arrangements. Though Kurosawa attended several music schools, he states that “Much of my music is inspired from traveling through countries and cultures. There is no better teacher than experience though real life world education; meeting and living with the people is the best.” n Christopher Nyerges is the author of many books, including “Extreme Simplicity: Homesteading in the City,” “Foraging California,” and “How to Survive Anywhere.” He leads regular field trips to learn about natural flora. It’s About ‘Time’ THEIR TOUR’S CANCELED BUT MUSTANGS OF THE WEST CELEBRATE NEW ALBUM ANYWAY
A
s if it wasn’t logistically challenging enough coordinating schedules between five artists who live in different regions and juggle myriad musical projects and jobs, Mustangs of the West (mustangsofthewest.com) confronted another obstacle as they began promoting their new album, “Time”: the national shutdown of tours. Resilience is in this band’s DNA. If it isn’t feasible for everyone to gather in person and co-write songs, pull material from the lead singer’s back catalog. If they can’t all be present in the studio at the same time, overdub. If a tour (including an album release show at the Coffee Gallery Backstage) gets canceled, put the album out anyway; Blue Élan releases “Time” this Friday. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, they’re brainstorming alternative promotional strategies. Guided in the studio by Bob Dylan/Lucinda Williams producer Mark Howard, much of “Time” sports a ’90s country feel (an impression reinforced by a steel-gilded cover of Tish Hinojosa’s 1992 single “In the Real West”). That’s not surprising considering the original Mustangs played LA-area venues such as the Palomino from the late 1980s into the mid-1990s. The original lineup, called the Mustangs, included electric guitarist Sherry Rayn Barnett, lead vocalist Suzanna Spring and bassist Holly Montgomery; in the new incarnation rounded up by Barnett in 2017, Mustangs of the West, they’re joined by drummer Suzanne Morissette and fiddler Aubrey Richmond. “Up until the very last minute, we were really pushing to keep this tour together,” Barnett says. “This band really perseveres.” Richmond, who also plays fiddle for Shooter
Jennings, could only be in the studio with the other Mustangs for about half the time due to touring commitments. She cites bittersweet anthem “This is Me Leaving,” an early Mustangs holdover, as an example of how Howard helped re-imagine arrangements while retaining the integrity of songs. “Mark was all about experimentation — ‘Let’s try this, let’s try that,’” Richmond recalls. “Since I wasn’t on one of the essential instruments, I said, ‘I’ll play whatever you want me to play.’ So he was throwing me on ukulele and B3 and I was finding my way around; it added this cool texture. He kept a lot of that. We were sitting around in a circle playing all these different percussion instruments, and then having it loop and be the bed for that song.” With a few exceptions, including Randy Sharp’s blues-tinged “I Blame Love,” the songs were primarily written or co-written by Spring; future recordings would presumably feature more collaborations within the band. Per Richmond, they chose songs that reflect “a certain perspective in life and the place where we’re coming from as adult, empowered women.” Barnett concurs, crediting Howard with giving them “a new sound” and sharpening focus on lyrics. The music “might have a vibe, but not an age.” That belief extends to making “Time” the title track. “It’s like, ‘Hey, it’s about time.’ This is where we’re at now. We’re a more grownup version of the original band, and have different points of view now. It’s not a message album by any means. … If anything, it’s a story of a band, a story of survival.” n
The soul-jazz stylist fashions a story about herself while reinterpreting gems from the songbooks of iconic inspirations such as Ella Fitzgerald, Lauryn Hill, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. Reteamed with producer Larry Klein, Springs’ elastic tones smolder during spare, intimate readings of Sade’s “Pearls,” the Bonnie Raitt-popularized “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” and a smoky duet of pop standard “Angel Eyes” with Norah Jones (another influence). An embrace of Duke Ellington’s “Solitude” faces down its singular state of being (with eloquent backing from saxophonist Chris Potter) and almost — almost — makes peace with it. Kandacesprings.com
BRIAN FALLON, Local Honey (Lesser Known/Thirty Tigers): HHHH
The Gaslight Anthem frontman pares down to essentials for eight introspective songs as intense in their way as anything he recorded with the full band. Melancholy is juxtaposed with gratitude; the resigned despair of murder ballad “Vincent” is followed by the sweetly melodic “I Don’t Mind (If I’m With You)” and hopeful dreams of “Horses” (“In our love we find forgiveness/ And in our fear we learn to see”) as Fallon celebrates moments of connection, love, and endurance. An album that stays with you like a true friend. RIYL Jason Isbell, Michael McDermott, Bruce Springsteen. TheBrianFallon. tumblr.com

The highlight’s a duet with Lizz Wright, “Take Me Home,” steamy with blues, gospel, and yearning. rainbowblonderecords.com/artists/ jose

Notice To Potential Bidders: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Notice To Property Owner: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
