Some singers may dream of competing on “American Idol” and realizing stardom. But Stapley Junior High School seventh grader Kayli Merwin is more interested in delivering a message of support through her “Tapestry” EP and her related organization. “I just wanted to write about something that mattered and make a difference,” said Kayli, who started singing at 8, and took up piano and guitar at 11. Kayli, 13, released in January the three-song “Tapestry,” which is available on iTunes. She will perform from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Chick-fil-A, 2533 S. Market St., Gilbert. Woods, Wiggles and Wags will bring pets for adoption. The title song “Tapestry” encompasses the stories of Reve Osheel, who lives with Tourette’s syndrome; Magclassifieds

gie Hope, who has Mosaic Trisomy 8 Syndrome; and Kayli’s cousin, Saylor Merwin, who suffered severe injuries in an ATV accident. Those stories are woven into a song that delivers emotion and reflection. “The girls were interviewed to get their words,” added Kayli’s mother, Kristin Merwin. Those lyrics include, “You call it a syndrome. You don’t understand. My life’s not a label, there’s more to the plan.” Emma Sophina helped Kayli write the song “Tapestry” for the EP, which was co-produced by Sophina, Michael Carlisle and Marcus Lee in April 2014 at Legaci Productions in Phoenix. Sophina has been giving Kayli voice lessons since she was 9 and continues to guide her as an artist even though she has relocated to Nashville.

Stapley Junior High student Kayli Merwin’s singing delivers a message of support and understanding. A portion of Kayli Merwin’s new EP, “Tapestry” will fund the young singer’s Tapestry Movement.

“Kayli is a natural at articulating words and we wanted to give her direction in how to put that into a melodic song structure,” Sophina said. The Tapestry Movement was a natural progression for Kayli. She wants to help children overcome adversity and to have a place to share their experiences. Through www.tapestrymovement.com, others are welcome to share their stories through written submissions or videos. “I will watch the videos or read through what they said and we’ll fea-

Diary of an Inquisitive Teen: Multicultural Household By Akash Kumar

Akash Kumar is an exchange student from India attending Mountain View High School as a senior. He will live in East Mesa until June. Here as part of a Department of State program, Akash is a student journalist in India. Read his work at www.jeevanmag.com. Email him at akashmanofsky@gmail.com.

So, the spring semester in school has started with the chilly mornings and the Mondays everyone hates. I hiked the Superstition Mountains while it was snowing and it was incredible to touch real snow for the first time in my life. Cactus and snow seem to be a paradox for most people; but everything is possible in Arizona. I just started volunteering at the i.d.e.a. museum and it’s really fun to engage with the kids and learn from them. Lochy went to school with me for a day and everyone there was blown away with the fact that a foreign exchange student was actually hosting another one. I had a hard time understanding his accent and quite often, I misunderstood his “A” for “I.” Being “Australian” and “Indian,” we shared a common interest in cricket. Cricket is Australia’s national sport. It’s India’s national pastime. The Indian Cricket Team is defending its championship title in the

Cricket World Cup, which takes place every four years, including 2015. Lochy brought me a related souvenir, the official T-shirt of the event. If you are not at all familiar with cricket, it’s a bat-and-ball game like baseball. Both have their own unique styles of playing and they share similarities as well as stark differences. Unlike the cute shape of a baseball field, which is like a slice of pie ready to be served, cricket grounds are elliptical. The bats in cricket are flat not rounded. But I’d encourage you to Google it, rather than listen to me. Ha, ha.

Veterans Issues Important to Mayor

Vehicle Show Drives into Mesa The Red Mountain Multigenerational Center is bringing back its car, truck and motorcycle show from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the facility, 7550 E. Adobe St., Mesa. Sponsored by East Valley Adult Resources, the event will host, for the first time, a Boxcar Henry Carnival, which features games and a live auction. The third annual show is open to all makes and models of cars, trucks and motorcycles. Vehicle registration is $20 before March 7; $25 at the door.

Admission to the vehicle displays, music, food, raffles and kids’ zone is free. The Boxcar Henry Road Carnival is $10 for a book of tickets. Monies raised through the festival help East Valley Adult Resources to maintain outreach programs, congregate meals, Meals While You Heal, Home Delivered Meals for the Homebound and other programs for East Valley seniors. For more information, call Peg Reed or Deaune Jacobs at (480) 218-2221.

By Jenny Ung Ending homelessness among veterans and the establishment of a veterans court are two initiatives Mayor John Giles said he hopes to accomplish within his term. “The at-risk veterans population everywhere, and Mesa included, has special challenges. It’s important that we address those unique challenges in that population,” he said during a Jan. 27 media briefing. “The City of Mesa has already decided that we are going to dedicate resources and personnel to addressing those challenges.” To further this mission, the City of Mesa opened a veterans court on Feb. 12 at the Mesa Municipal Court, with 12 cases scheduled for the day, said Paul Thomas, Mesa Municipal Court administrator.

With more than 32,000 veterans in Mesa, according to the Census Reporter, a new court will be valuable, said John Fuller from the Arizona Veterans Court Mentor Project. Veterans from surrounding cities will be able to utilize the court as well. Richard Mendoza, a veterans assistant at the East Valley Veterans Education Center, agreed that the move is important. Fuller said, however, that several challenges must be met, including ending veteran homelessness. Giles is ready to remedy the situation. “Mesa is, for a variety of reasons, well-situated to be successful in attacking the problem of veterans homelessness,” Giles said. “For many years, ... continues on page 16

Bark Avenue Celebrating 10 Years in Mesa Bark Avenue Pet Supply will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in Mesa with a month filled with specials as well as an event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 7. A slew of discounts will be offered on March 7, according to Elizabeth Pfeiffer, who is with Bark Avenue. There will be special guests as well. “We’re going to have product reps and vendors, samples and tastings,” she added. “We’ll have training people here, too, with information about classes and vendors.” Among the vendors is one that specializes in “paw-sages.” “One of our vendors has created this spray that’s good for dogs’ paws,” she said. “There are special collars, too. Basically, this is a big event where we’re getting all sorts of people beyond our normal staff here. There will be tents out front to house all of these different people.” Locally owned and operated, Bark Avenue Pet Supply has served the community since 2005, with a staff of dedicated pet owners and breeders.

They have spent time researching pet nutrition to help their own and their customers’ companion animals lead longer and healthier lives. Bark Avenue Pet Supply invites pet owners to visit the store and discuss their pets’ needs. The well-trained staff will suggest a selection of food based on the pet’s age, breed, activity level, food intolerances and health issues. In selecting food for the store, the staff looks for products without soy, corn or wheat. They reject brands that contain meat or poultry byproducts, sweeteners, grain fragments, and artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. The store carries food with highquality ingredients. The store regularly hosts guest speakers and holds frequent seminars on a variety of pet-related topics. Some of the topics discussed in the past are nutrition, valley fever and allergies. The monthly Tooth Talk shares tips on improving a pet’s dental health. The business has gained a reputation throughout the Valley as “The Place for People that Care about Their

Pets.” Bark Avenue Pet Supply is a destination for people looking for the best in healthy pet foods and supplies. The staff stresses a healthy lifestyle for pets that includes feeding a nutritious diet and plenty of exercise. A few steps away is Bark Avenue Pet Resort. Jolee-Jaffa Music Foundation Puts on Baroque Ball 2015 By Breanne DeMore For longtime Mesa resident Joanne Jolee, music isn’t simply something to fill the air as she sits in traffic. Jolee has witnessed music’s wonderful healing power herself. When she home-schooled her children, Jolee, a music teacher of more than 30 years, made sure that piano and music lessons were part of their daily curriculum. She witnessed how they helped her children concentrate and improve in their academics. Jolee and her husband, Bill Jaffa, aren’t the only people who believe in this connection either. Multiple studies have been published worldwide that link academic skills such as reading and writing fluency, creative thinking and long-term memory with music-based learning. In addition, research reveals the phenomenal benefits of playing music in adults, too. Reduced blood pressure, heart and respiration rates, plus higher HGH levels that help to reverse the signs of aging, are just a few

Page 16

of the health benefits found in adults. With this in mind, Jolee and Jaffa launched the Jolee-Jaffa Music Foundation in 2012. The nonprofit seeks to advance public awareness of the benefits for music education for people of all ages and to provide opportunities for that education where they can. The foundation will be holding its inaugural charity gala, Baroque Ball, at The Trailhead at Las Sendas Mountain on March 21. Known for its architectural beauty and stunning views of the McDowell and Usery mountains and Phoenix city lights, this venue is the perfect place for the event. Drawing from the foundation’s focus on classical music, this formal event is inspired by the Italian Baroque period, which produced some of the world’s favorite musicians and is recognized for opulence, passion and brilliance. Proceeds will go to-

ward providing music lessons and instruments to the underprivileged and to promoting the health benefits of playing music daily for people of all ages. Tickets are $50 and include a reception and silent auction, which start at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Silent auction items include a round of golf for up to four people at Eagle’s Nest Golf Course at Pebble Creek, a beautiful single strand of pearls and an hour and a half helicopter ride for two among other items. Tickets and more information about the gala and the work done by the foundation can be purchased at www.j-jmf.org.

we’ve had strong social service agencies in the city that have been working on the issue of homelessness.” The City of Mesa Housing Authority operates the HUD-VASH program, which provides rental assistance for chronically homeless veterans and their families, while the Veterans Administration in Phoenix provides case management and clinic services at its medical centers and community clinics, according to the City of Mesa’s website. The VASH voucher program mirrors Section 8 guidelines. The veterans are referred to the City of Mesa Housing Authority by the Veterans Administration (VA) in Phoenix. The City partnered with the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing several years ago to help get homeless veterans off the street. Veterans are the hardest to serve and house because of the required VA processes to enter the HUD-VASH program, said Tammy Albright, Housing and Community Development director for the City of Mesa.

Rendezvous Park looking back

Mesa residents dedicated their first city park, dubbed Rendezvous Park, in May 1938. Located at Center and Second streets, the facility featured a skating rink, tennis courts, swimming pool, bathhouse and floodlit baseball field. It was built by volunteers on the site of the former Depot Park. The 3,000-seat baseball field was built in 1920 and was the home to many semipro teams, including the Mesa Jewels and the Mesa Orphans. Professional baseball came to Rendezvous Park in 1952 when the Chicago Cubs moved in for Spring Training. The Cubs stayed until 1965, but Mesa didn’t host any spring training until 1969, when the Oakland Athletics relocated from Scottsdale to Rendezvous Park.

Rendezvous Park fell victim to the wrecking ball in November 1976 and was replaced by Hohokam Park in 1977. The A’s played in there until 1979, then departed for Scottsdale, opening the door for the return of the Cubs in 1980. In 1997, Hohokam Park was razed and replaced by a new Hohokam Park just west of the old site. The Cubs conducted spring training in Hohokam

Park until 2013, when they moved to the new Sloan Park in Mesa. The A’s returned to the recently renovated and renamed Hohoham Stadium in 2015. Rendezvous Park pool was built in the 1930s and segregated until 1953, after which Anglos and minorities used the pool on separate days. Without a filtration system, the pool was drained and refilled about every second or third day. On the nondrained day, the pool offered evening swimming. For more than eight decades, Rendezvous was the star of Mesa parks, but with the completion of Hohokam

Stadium a mile north and the demolition of the old ballpark in 1976, Rendezvous Park began disappearing— making way for the Mesa Convention and Conference Center, the Mesa Amphitheater, a library and a hotel.

For its 30th anniversary, Pioneer Title Agency, an Arizona-based, family-owned business, has partnered with the Arizona Trail Association for “Take a Hike,” the first fundraising and employee wellness challenge utilizing the Arizona National Scenic Trail. The Arizona Trail is a continuous path across Arizona. It is divided into 43 unique passages and is open to all forms of nonmotorized recreation, including hiking, running, backpacking, horseback riding and mountain biking (outside designated wilderness areas). Like Pioneer, the Arizona Trail Association also is celebrating a 30-year anniversary. Through the unique partnership, Pioneer’s team of more than 375 individuals set a goal to raise at least $30,000 this year to support the Arizona Trail. The team also will collectively hike, bike, run or ride all 800plus miles of the Arizona Trail, with local offices adopting and overseeing that each passage is completed. Families, friends, customers and associates also are invited to participate. In addition to the wellness benefits associated with time spent on the trail, the initiative hopes to encourage everyone to explore a segment of the Arizona Trail that they likely haven’t seen. In the Southeast Valley, which includes eight branches in Mesa, Tempe and Chandler, local offices signed to trek across and raise funds for the following trails: • Passage 13, an easy-to-moderate passage that covers more than eight miles across Oracle • Passage 16, a moderate passage that covers more than 25 miles across the Gila River Canyons • Passage 18, a moderate passage that covers nearly 19 miles across Reavis Canyon • Passage 19, a strenuous passage that covers nearly 30 miles across the Superstition Wilderness • Passage 21, a moderate-to-strenuous passage that covers nearly 20 March 2015

miles across Pine Mountain “This project, which many of our offices will be undertaking together, is one of many volunteer and fundraising activities happening in 2015 that our folks will be involved in,” says Keith Newlon, founder and co-owner of Pioneer Title. “In fact, our team has a statewide community relations program, Pioneer Title Agency in Action, which focuses on giving back both time and money to hundreds of local causes across Arizona.” “While our ‘Take a Hike’ Trail program is special for our 30th anniversary, giving back at the hyperlocal level is something each and every team member in all 55 branches is encouraged to do each day.” When complete, the $30,000 raised through the project will greatly assist the Arizona Trail Association in its mission to build, maintain, promote, protect and sustain the Arizona Trail as a unique encounter with the land. Perhaps not coincidentally, the concept of the Arizona Trail began about 30 years ago when Dale Shewalter sat atop Coronado Peak near the U.S./ Mexico border and shared his dream of a cross-state trail with others. The nearest town to this historic location is Sierra Vista—where the Newlon family founded Pioneer Title Agency and still operates. Shewalter was an American teacher who founded and promoted the Arizona Trail in 1985. “One of our goals for this challenge is that more Arizonans will fall in love with the natural wonders that exist along the Arizona National Scenic Trail,” says Matthew Nelson, executive director of the Arizona Trail Association. “Pioneer’s commitment to covering the entire length of the trail is admirable, and means that many individuals will get to experience some of the least traveled areas in our state.” For more information, or to make a donation to the Trail, visit www.ptaaz. com.

By Jenny Ung At his first State of the City address, Mayor John Giles urged audience members to sign the newly launched One Mesa pledge. “The importance of Mesa being a community that is well-known for respecting and welcoming everyone... is why I introduced the One Mesa pledge,” he said. The One Mesa pledge, introduced during a Jan. 6 interfaith breakfast, is not a City of Mesa initiative, but a citywide diversity campaign that Giles said should be embraced by the community. “It has to be in our churches,” Giles said. “It has to be in our schools. It has to be in our service clubs. It has to be in our families...it’s the right thing to do.” The pledge encourages citizens to talk about diversity and to celebrate the community’s melting pot, said Deanna Villanueva-Saucedo, director of public outreach for Maricopa Community Colleges. Last year, for the first time in my life, I had a successful garden. I’d like to capitalize on that success and expand my garden this year, and I’d like to do it as inexpensively as possible. Cue the opportunity to start composting, something I’ve been wanting to try for a while. My first step was to create the compost bin. I’ve seen composters in stores for as low as $45 and online as high as $150. Because the whole point of this project is to save money, I wasn’t hearsay

about to drop that much coin on something I can get for free or nearly free with just a little bit of Googling. Most Valley cities have backyard composting programs where they convert old and broken city trash cans into compost bins, which they either sell for about $5 or give to residents for free. Many will even deliver the compost bin for no added cost! Air is an essential tool to making compost and all city-created composters have holes drilled in the

sides for this purpose. The hardest part of this project was digging a hole deep enough that the top air-holes were below ground level. I used the excess dirt to fill the hole back in so the converted trash can has a snug fit. I read that putting straw in the bottom of the composter is a great way to start the process, so I went to the Pet Food Depot near my home. They said I could take any hay that was on the ground and not in a bale. I filled up one grocery bag and then spread it across the bottom of my bin. The best compost is made of plant scraps. Never, ever include pet feces, meat, fish or oil of any kind. If it comes from a plant it’s good, if it comes from an animal, except for egg shells, don’t use it.

Fresh compost material provides nitrogen and the dry material you will add provides carbon which, when combined, breaks the mixture down into the nutrient-rich soil that plants love so much. Start by placing a 6-inch layer of fresh material across the bottom of the composter, followed by a 2-inch layer of dry material. In between each layer, I sprinkled about 1 cup of compost starter, but you can also use mulch. Repeat the process until you run out of material, then water down the entire thing to the consistency of a justwrung-out sponge. I have found that,

because I placed my composter where it spends most daylight hours in the sun, that I need to wet it down every three to four days to keep the process moving. Once a week I use a shovel to turn the pile and stop it from settling. The more air that gets into the layers, the quicker the process will finish, usually 8-12 weeks depending on the temperature. In the meantime I am already working on my next batch by saving all of my vegetable and fruit scraps in an airtight container under my sink. I was very skeptical of the smell this practice would create, but they weren’t lying when they said that if you stick to plant-based refuse, it won’t stink. That lovely garbage odor that makes everyone gag is from animal-derived trash, not plant-based. What to use for fresh materials

KinderU Offers a New Look for Mesa Public Schools

LEARN FROM THE MASTER!

Leaders in Providing Opportunities The district is branding its preschool programs to help families of young learners identify Mesa Public Schools as a provider of high-quality preschool opportunities. Families can focus their energy on getting their children ready for kindergarten, and the experts can ensure they’re helping children develop the skills they need to become lifelong learners. Easy Registration Process “It means we can simplify processes for families. One name, one registration,” said Kim Freehan, early childhood specialist. “Internally, staff can identify scholarship options to fit the family, instead of the family wading through the complications of several

scholarship options before they can enroll their child. Classroom sites may have a blend of children using different types of scholarships, tuition or IEP support to attend one location.” Same Great Opportunities A variety of options are available to Mesa children and those living outside district boundaries. Existing preschool programs in Mesa include Mesa Early Learning Preschool (MELP), First Things First Preschool (FTF), Pre-K, Community Ed. Preschool, Montessori, Pre-K Plus, Special Education Preschool, PEER and Child Development Centers. “At the end of the day, preschool is the time when children develop a curiosity and desire to figure out how things work,” shared Freehan. “The more comfortable children are, the better they do with the rigors of today’s kindergarten. KinderU provides children quality experiences so they have a solid foundation for future educational success.” For more information, visit www. mpsaz.org/commed.

Mesa Public Schools’ early education is introducing a new look for its preschool opportunities. The district will house all of its existing programs under one umbrella, KinderU. The exciting new look includes a smart KinderU logo, slogan and banner. Families will begin to see the name on registration materials for the new school year and on the community education website.

YOUR CLOTHES Q : I want to wear one my favorite dress shirts for a Valentine’s Day dinner for my wife. But I noticed discoloration under the arms. Any suggestions? A: Some garments become discolored under the arm area, typically caused by perspiration and/or deodorants. Once the color is gone, normally nothing can return it to its original appearance. Underarm shields can help provide protection, and it also may help to apply deodorant several minutes before dressing.

navigating parenthood By Eva Dwight, B.A. MaEd.

Scaffolding for a Child’s Success mom section

Frequently, I hear parents complain about having to teach children things they should already know. Why can’t he just be responsible? Why do Eva Dwight I have to remind her to...(fill in the blank)? Usually, we’re talking about older children—preteens or teens. When they were little, we helped them learn to tie their shoes or ride a bike, exercising patience while they tried over and over before getting it right. As they get older, kids need that same commitment to help them learn skills of independence, responsibility and self-management. It’s easy to become impatient when they don’t master these skills as quickly as we’d like. Scaffolding can help. When we scaffold, we put in place a temporary pasta vixen

structure and then gradually take it down as our children master new skills. Scaffolding will look different for every child, but here are some basic guidelines that parents can follow: Start with close supervision. Watch your child’s current skill level and determine what strengths he has that will allow him to take the next step, as well as what gaps you notice that need to be addressed for him to be successful. Perhaps he’s really responsible about getting his homework done, but his lack of organization causes him to leave the homework in his backpack or on the kitchen table so it doesn’t get turned in. Your scaffolding will include daily backpack and work organization. Step away gradually, allowing your child the opportunity to practice

the new skill with baby steps. Once she establishes the organization habit—probably after supervised practice for several weeks—ask if she’s ready to try those steps independently. The next step might be allowing her to do it herself and show you when it’s done. Monitor the skill from time to time, to ensure that the structure is still strong. After practicing step two for several weeks, ask if he’s ready to make this his daily habit without supervision. Agree to check in after a week to examine the state of the backpack. If it’s back to the abyss, you and your child might need to back up and practice step two a few more weeks before trying again. If he’s managing the skill well, check back weekly for a while and then every two weeks, etc. to be sure the structure you built is still in place and effective.

This three-step process can be applied to any number of skill gaps, from staying home alone to spending time at the mall with friends to being trusted with the car. If we resist the urge to ask, “Why is this growing up thing taking so long?” and instead, commit to the time and the process, our children will experience success and selfconfidence, and we will experience the satisfaction of having raised responsible, independent young adults. Dwight is a parent, family and personal coach. For more information, go to www.creativecoachingconversations.com.

Chicago Artist Tom Fedro to Lead Classes at Wine and Design Renowned Chicago artist Tom Fedro will teach two classes at Wine and Design in East Mesa from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7, at the studio, 2920 N. Power Rd., Suite 104. Tickets are $40 for one class or $75 for both. To register, visit www.wineanddesign.com/mesa. For more information, call (480) 447-5446. This is an exclusive opportunity for session participants to learn from a master, and to take home their own versions of the pieces “In Tune” and “Slapping the Bass.” Wine and Design features select works from Fedro’s extensive portfolio to paint in its classes. Fedro’s art combines urban landscapes and pop art faces that focus on composition and color. His brightly colored, bold whimsical art celebrates the joy of life. He is represented by galleries throughout the United States and Europe.

Recent special projects include pieces commissioned for the Broadway show “Rent,” the 40th anniversary of “The Second City,” Too Good Wineries, Sweet Riot Candy Co. and Chicago’s “Cows on Parade.” To see his paintings, visit www.fidostudio.net. Wine and Design students will paint along with Fedro on their own 16-inch by 20-inch canvas while he instructs and paints on a larger canvas. His finished pieces will be auctioned off following the classes. Wine and Design is a franchise business founded in Raleigh, North Carolina, in early 2010 to offer patrons the chance to unleash their creative side. Wine and Design offers a range of art classes from private painting parties to kids’ summer camps, with a fun painting environment for individuals and groups. The Mesa location is Wine and Design’s first in Arizona. The two-hour painting classes are designed for beginners and experts.

Tom Fedro, who created “Slappin’ the Bass,” will appear at Wine and Design on March 6 and March 7.

A local artist guides individuals with stroke-by-stroke instructions on how to paint their chosen painting and take-home their own masterpiece. All

supplies are provided including canvas, smock, paints, brushes and a wine bar for purchase of selected vintages to enhance the painting experience.

What’s Cooking? By Jan D’Atri

Waldorf Chicken Salad “You’re the top! You’re a Waldorf salad. You’re the top! You’re a Berlin ballad.” Lyrics from Cole Porter’s “You’re the Top”

It’s just a mystery to me. How could something so simple and delicious virtually vanish from the culinary scene? After all, this is the type of recipe that everyone is looking for these days— light, healthful and with just a few ingredients that you can find at any store, any time. I’m talking about the iconic Waldorf salad, the beautiful and colorful plate of apple, celery, grapes and walnuts served on a bed of greens that was a staple on the menu at the Waldorf Hotel in New York City (before it became the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1897). This recipe is more than a century old

and has yet to make a splashy comeback in the way cupcakes and whoopee pies have. I say it’s time we give this seminal salad its due and, while we’re at it, let’s give it an update. By adding some diced chicken and lightening the dressing by substituting yogurt, honey and ginger for the mayonnaise, the classic Waldorf salad gets a hearty and healthy makeover! It’s a beautiful plate as an appetizer, side salad or light main meal and should be enjoyed as much today as it was 120 years ago. By the way, The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel also gave us the original red velvet cake. For the recipe and story of the original Waldorf-Astoria red velvet cake, visit www.jandatri.com. Search red velvet cake in the recipe box.

Modern Grove Neighborhood Eatery & Market serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Modern Grove Modern Grove Neighborhood Eatery & Market opened in February and is a fresh addition to the neighborhood near Gilbert and Brown roads. The light, bright and breezy restaurant oozes urban chic. The restaurant is casual, and customers order at a walk-up counter. The food is then delivered to patrons’ tables, whether it’s the indoor seating or an indoor/outdoor seating area near the bar. The outdoor patio has ample seating and the faux turf adds an extra pop of color to the comfortable environment. I stopped by with my son for lunch and we tried a variety of entrees. We spied an interesting item on the starters menu and ordered the mac and cheese bites ($9). They are every bit as delicious as they sound—mac and cheese rolled into balls, dipped in a panko breading, fried and served with an equally decadent bacon cheese sauce. There were six in the order and they are pretty filling, so it’s a good appetizer to share. The strawberry chicken salad ($11) was simply perfect. The generously sized salad was bursting with fresh strawberries, creamy goat cheese crumbles, a variety of greens, ovenroasted chicken and sweet candied pecans. The balsamic vinaigrette had a slight sweetness to it that did not overpower the salad. Next, I had the apple chicken salad sandwich ($10) that was accompanied by a pasta salad. The white meat ovenroasted chicken, Granny Smith apples, Page 38

dried cranberries and walnuts made for an exceptional chicken salad—one of the best I’ve had anywhere. The multigrain bread was thick and hearty. I was told when I ordered that the bacon cheddar burger is the most popular and it’s easy to see why. The 100-percent Angus beef burger ($11) was moist, delicious and topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese and thick bacon. The brioche bun was a nice touch and stood up for the duration of the meal without turning mushy. I chose the sweet potato fries and they were a tasty addition to the entrée. Burgers and sandwiches come with your choice of regular fries, sweet potato fries, regular fries and sweet fries combo, or potato, fruit or pasta salad. The Modern Grove menu includes many tempting breakfast items, appetizers, pizzas, salads, paninis and a kids’ menu. The cool restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and boasts a convenient selection of grab-and-go items, drinks, snacks and small gift items.

An Introduction to Victim’s Rights in the State of Arizona No one expects to be the victim of a crime. Regardless of the nature of the crime, victims and their family members often suffer sigMatthew S. Long nificant emotional, psychological, financial and physical trauma. Victims and their family members often deal with many unwanted, unexpected and unfamiliar things as a result of the crime. One of those unwanted, unexpected and unfamiliar things is the criminal justice system. It can be particularly difficult for child victims to understand and navigate the criminal justice system. Understanding the criminal justice system and what to expect as the victim or the loved one of a victim can reduce some of the emotional and psychological trauma that is part of being the victim of a crime. Here are a few important things to know to help navigate the criminal justice world: In Arizona, a victim has constitutional rights. Victim does not press charges. This often creates difficulty especially when the person who is accused or charged is a loved one. The prosecutor is not the victim’s attorney. Hopefully a prosecutor will have the same goals and objectives as the victim in a crime, but unfortunately this isn’t always the case. Victims are not appointed an attorney. Government agencies have great victim services offices with many resources. Each victim will be appointed a hard-working victim advocate to provide information and assistance. These advocates are employees of the biz box

government agencies and are not attorneys. As such, sometimes these advocates are limited with the assistance they can provide victims. Victims are free to hire attorneys to represent them and ensure that their rights are protected. A victim’s rights attorney can also interact with law enforcement and prosecutors to advocate the victim’s position on behalf of the victim. A victim’s rights attorney can also help the victim seek and obtain restitution and recover damages for any harm suffered by the crime. The attorneys at Rowley Chapman & Barney have prior law enforcement and prosecution experience, which makes them uniquely qualified to represent victims of crimes. This past experience includes crimes involving significant financial loss, child crimes and sexual offenses, as well as serious injuries and death. These attorneys also have significant experience assisting child victims and witnesses, and can help guide children and their family members as they navigate the unexpected, unwanted and unfamiliar world of the criminal justice system.

Readers who need help can call me at (480) 496-2094.

Golfers enjoy playing on the challenging and scenic 18-hole course at Red Mountain Ranch Country Club.

Red Mountain Ranch Country Club Features Top-Notch Golf Course classifieds

Since its opening in 1986, Red Mountain Ranch Country Club has strived to offer its members a beautiful place to play golf, as well as ample opportunities for fun and fitness. The 18-hole Pete Dye championship golf course features nearby Red Mountain as a backdrop as well as views from Scottsdale to Ahwatukee. Red Mountain Ranch Country Club also offers its members access to a fitness center and six lighted tennis courts. The Player’s Grille and Patio has a full-service public bar and restaurant. The country club, however, has become much more than a golf course for the community. The club’s management promises there is something for everyone. “We offer kids’ clinics and pretty soon we hope to offer painting classes,” said Heather De Brosse, director of membership sales and marketing for Red Mountain Ranch Country Club. A weekly farmers market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays has been exceptionally popular. Other events include pasta nights on Thursdays and Chef Table events, bridal fairs and more, De Brosse said. “A lot of people are coming to our events, and we have been attracting a lot of families.” De Brosse said the country club also places a strong emphasis on bePage 42

ing available to the community. It has several rooms that members can use to host events—everything from corporate galas and weddings to bachelorette parties. It also works with the community. For example, De Brosse said, the country club recently received approval to work with Phoenix Children’s Hospital for events. “We are extremely excited to work with them and maybe offer some type of kids’ tennis and golf event that ties into this,” she said. “We are very big on community partnerships, and we like to help local businesses. It’s like a symbiotic relationship; they appreciate the help, and so do we.” De Brosse said she especially enjoys working with the other directors at the country club, whom, she said are incredibly supportive of each other. She also likes meeting new members and answering any questions that they might have. “I really enjoy my work because I never know who I will get to talk to. Every day I wonder what will happen and how I can help people, because, in the end, it’s the people that count the most. Red Mountain Ranch Country Club is located at 6425 E. Teton Circle, in Mesa.
