A Seder for the ages
ews flash: The Easter Bunny is a girl… and is not a bunny! Now that I have your attention, many of us who were raised as Christians forget the biblical Last Supper was actually a Seder. Anti-Semites conveniently suppress that Jesus, Mary and Joseph were Jewish. Easter and Passover are always together because they are both moveable feasts. Who knew? For a long time, I didn’t. Raised in South Dakota, the only Jewish person I was familiar with was Anne Frank. And, of course, Jesus. The third Jewish person I knew, I married in 1977. His family was mortified and had to muster every “tolerance” molecule they had to accept his choice of me as his fiancée. I soon was referred to as “the shiksa,” a quasi-derogatory term for a non-Jewish woman. Oy vey! My Norwegian American, ultra-Lutheran grandmother morphed her own religious bigotry into bittersweet acceptance. Grandma walked up to my handsome new groom at our wedding reception. She peered up at him and yelled as only slightly deaf people can bellow: “Your people killed my savior… but you seem like a nice boy!” Uff da! (Norwegian for “oy vey.”) Being the quintessential good sport, I offered to convert. My new husband, petrified at the idea of me becoming Jewish, envisioned my conversion and gently talked me out of it. He was clearly familiar with my meshuggah approach to life. (Slightly nuts, but with zeal!) He realized if I converted, next, I would undoubtedly become a rabbi. I would remodel the kitchen to accommodate kosher requirements, and he would spend his adult life like his childhood: going to the temple all the time and wearing things on his head. (My new hubby was a bareheaded-type guy.) Imagine his chagrin when I announced, “I’m creating a Seder!” I loved the idea of Seder, the ritual at Passover, which is a commemoration of the Jews’ Exodus from Egypt at the hands of Pharaoh. Of course, we all have Pharaohs we need deliverance from, whether that Pharaoh literally enslaves a whole race or is a newly elected QAnon supporter who wants to overthrow the government. Seder is a beloved holiday for everyone, Jew and shiksa alike. A theater producer at the time, I roped in every theater friend I could find and created a Seder production team. We decided our Seder would be a feminist one and we would include — hold on to your yarmulkes — women! Being an ardent women’s rights advocate, I was taken aback by some of the customs my husband had grown up with. His mom had dairy dishes, meat dishes, Passover dairy dishes and Passover meat dishes. I’m thinking, “Geez, women did not make up these rules.” The patriarchs dared to create
ritual texts for the Seder (called a Haggadah) with no mention of women during the flight from Egypt. They were saying, “Let my people go… except we’re going to keep our women serving us like slaves.” How about you let US go! Let’s see: We were supposed to gather manna, milk the goats, clean the tents, bake the unleavened bread — quickly! — keep the kids quiet, separate the meat and dairy dishes plus the separate set of Passover dishes, clear the dwelling of anything non-Kosher, prepare the table and cook the special Passover meal, then smile at relatives we don’t really like… all while chafing at our historical contributions being ignored as we wait on you? Not at our table! My first shiksa Passover finally came to pass, excuse the expression, and was a sit-down Seder for 60 people. As custom dictates, we set a place for the wandering prophet Elijah, just in case he decided to return. (As it turns out, Elijah probably did more to wipe out matriarchal goddess cultures than any of the other prophets, but that’s another column.) In any event, we set a place for Miriam, too, just in case she wanted to drop by. After all, if it hadn’t been for Miriam and that ancient shiksa Princess Bisyah, Pharaoh’s daughter, Moses would have had a very different fate than leading the Jews — males and females — out of Egypt. Throughout history, there have always been women and girls, making everyone’s history possible. This year, my shiksa Seder Zoom will include having each guest reflect on: 1. Current oppression in their lives: “I feel enslaved by the addiction to please everyone all the time,” “I think I have a drinking problem” or “I have a compulsion to customize holidays to my personal feminist liking”; 2. Actions to take in the coming year to sever those self-designed ropes of said enslavement; 3. Five things they are grateful for. Sadly, my marriage to my first husband ended, but I’ll always be grateful to him for being a mensch and introducing me to a rich heritage I continue to celebrate. Happy Easter, and may Patty the Easter Platypus bring you your heart’s desire!

Pasadena should educate its residents on waste
Editor: There is progress being made toward improving our city’s waste management problem. Recently, the city’s plastic bag ban has been reinstated after being withdrawn during the pandemic. On March 25, The Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act of 2021 was officially introduced to Congress. On Jan. 1, the city of Pasadena will begin allowing residents to compost food waste in yard waste bins. These are all good things, but will Pasadena residents know how to implement these changes? I often see odd things sticking out of people’s blue bins: lawn chairs, umbrellas, polystyrene packing materials, plastic bags, diapers, old clothes, and all types of plastic that cannot be recycled. I saw a neighbor throwing plastic bags full of dirt into her yard waste bin today. The list of what is recyclable/compostable and what is not is on the city of Pasadena website, but finding it requires time that most of us don’t have. By leaving an uneducated public, we put the burden of sorting out unwanted items and items that can destroy equipment to the MRFs and composting facilities. If every city passes the buck to sorting facilities outside their city limits, then these fixes to our waste stream can never truly be implemented. These days we are inundated with emails, fliers, and junkmail, most of which we ignore. We need a strong community based social marketing campaign to educate our residents on the correct ways to recycle and compost, and to garner commitments from them to participate. This can only happen with one-on-one contact, which the city claims they can’t afford. What we can’t afford is for our waste to continue unabated for years to come. Let’s put money down now to educate our residents and invest in the future. Jay Whittaker

Retired nurse Joan Banks, 90, receives her second dose of the vaccine.
NAACP transforms its office into a vaccine clinic By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
E
ven on a Saturday, NAACP Pasadena branch President Allen Edson comes into the office to help answer the phones. As he speaks to a constituent on the phone, Edson sits down in his ordinary office chair with his eggshell white NAACP bomber jacket draped over it. Around the room are reminders of why Edson continues to work for the NAACP. Across the room is a mural of the black power fist. In front of it, pinned to a room divider is a silhouette target Edson used when he went to the range with some Pasadena police officers. Tucked in between the two is a nurse and patient receiving their final dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. For the past several weeks, Edson and the NAACP transformed their office space into a pop-up vaccine clinic to have members vaccinated. With doses provided by Pasadena Public Health and nurses from Huntington Hospital, the pop-up clinic has vaccinated
close to 300 people with at least one dose, with 54 people receiving their second dose March 27. “It’s about getting the African American community vaccinated,” Edson said on why he organized the clinics. The idea of the pop-up clinics first came to Edson while working with the Huntington Hospital in the winter. “Allen requested it. He said he wanted to be part of the effort to vaccinate the African American community,” added manager of community outreach Ruth Pichaj. However, the NAACP’s clinic is not unique. In underserved communities across Pasadena, Pichaj, Huntington Hospital and other community organizations such as the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, have organized vaccination sites in Pasadena Community Job Center, Villa Parke and Harambee Ministries. Clinics like these have helped fill the racial disparity amongst vaccinations in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention only know the race/ethnicity data for about 53% of people who have received at least one dose. According to that data, 66% of the group were white, 9% were Latino, and 5% were Black. One reason why some African Americans are hesitant to get the vaccine is systemic racism in the health care system, particularly the Tuskegee Study. In a study conducted by Kaiser and The Undefeated Black participants cited the infamous government-backed Tuskegee Syphilis Study. In 1932, without informed consent, the U.S. government performed studies on 600 Black men, 399 of whom had syphilis. They were told they were receiving free medical care, however, the goal of the study was to track the damage the disease does to the human body. “The health care system has not been historically nice to African Americans,” said Melissa Lee, a volunteer at the clinic. “When you talk to the elders in the community, they have experienced unfriendly medical treatment. The idea of trusting the government with something so momentous like taking the vaccine comes with skepticism.” While there has been hesitancy seen across the country, healthcare workers at the NAACP clinic have said that for the most part people are excited to get the vaccine. “How many people got to die...Your loved ones, your neighbors your friends, how could you be hesitant [to get the vaccine]” said Judy Dunn, who came with her disabled brother to get vaccinated. She said she looked forward to getting vaccinated. The lack of hesitancy seen at the clinics could be partially credited to Edson and his campaign to inform the community. While Edson himself was skeptical about the vaccines, he knew that it would save lives. He helped organize outreach campaigns and invited doctors to host info sessions, to educate those who had fears of the vaccine. Even with his fears, Edson received the vaccine to lead by example. “You have to represent as a leader,” Edson said. “I thought it was important.” Edson thought of sending out fliers before the first pop-up clinic, but he was told that fliers would attract people trying to crash the vaccination site. He then got the word out the old fashion way, calling people and sending emails to the members of the NAACP branch. “We have an incredible network of members,” said Edson. “Once we got the word out after our first clinic, word of mouth just spread. We have to turn away people now.” Even though he has to turn away the occasional person trying to get the vaccine without an appointment, Edson is glad that he’s able to provide this service to the community. “It’s one of the most rewarding things,” Edson said about providing vaccines. “We’re saving lives.”

Film depicts the history of police brutality in Pasadena B
By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
orn and raised in Pasadena, Dennis Haywood, 53, knows better than to call the police if he needs help, especially in Northwest. “I know people in this community don’t call the police about stuff like that because they know that the police come up here and kill. I wouldn’t call the police for help,” Haywood said. “If I had a problem, I would call the fire department because they’re not going to come with guns.” For years, Haywood’s view of the police has become more and more jaded. His distrust of the police, specifically the Pasadena Police Department, grew from decades of seeing police abuse Black men in his neighborhood. “I saw the Pasadena police shoot [a man] in 1986,” Haywood said. “I saw the Pasadena police shoot him and he was harmless… I grew up in Northwest Pasadena and I never had a good relationship with [the police].” Throughout the United States, videos of police abusing protesters, minorities and their community have dominated the national conversation. Haywood claimed that the same brutality seen on TV screens has been happening in Pasadena. Spurred by the death of George Floyd, Haywood decided to make a documentary called “Thorns on the Rose: Black Abuse, Corruption and the Pasadena Police.” The film depicts decades of abuse by the Pasadena Police Department, including the beating of Christopher Bellew and the killings of Kendrec McDade and more recently Anthony McClain. Haywood’s film uses footage from cellphones and body cameras to depict the incidents of police brutality. While editing the film, he watched the brutal beating of Bellew and the deaths of McDade and McClain repeatedly. The images and voices toiled with his emotions. At times Haywood found himself crying while editing the footage. “I cried doing this,” Haywood said. “Looking at the footage over and over and hearing the pain, especially when you get to Anthony McClain… it’s just hard to listen to over and over and over again.” For Haywood, the goal of his film is to spur change in the police department, beginning with the termination of Police Chief John Perez and ending with a full revamp of the police department. “Sometimes you got to destroy to rebuild,” Haywood said. “I just think that we have to tear this down.” He specifically cited the McClain case and claimed Perez was a liar. “He is a police (officer) and the police protect each other,” Haywood said. “Perez is a liar. He will lie to your face to protect his men.” The McClain case garnered the attention of attorney Ben Crump, whose name has become synonymous with civil rights cases after overseeing the George Floyd, Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin lawsuits. “We’re here to proclaim that America should also be saying Anthony McClain’s name,” Crump said during a press conference on March 22. “His video is just as shocking as Jacob Blake Jr., and it underscores the fact that there seems to be a propensity for police in America to shoot Black men in the back — disproportionately to anything we’ve seen them do to our white brothers and sisters.” Crump found similarities in the McClain and Blake cases where both men were shot in the back by police, both incidents happened days apart. Blake survived but was partially paralyzed. Crump and Haywood both claim that McClain was unarmed but the police department disputes that. After Crump’s March 22 press conference, the city released a statement on the McClain Case. “The incident that took place last year that resulted in the tragic death of Anthony McClain continues to be reviewed by multiple agencies, including the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office’s review of the shooting, as well as the OIR Group, which has been retained by the city to conduct an independent review of the incident. “The recent loss of Mr. McClain’s beloved grandmother has only added to the family’s pain and our thoughts are with them. As there is ongoing litigation regarding the matter, we are unable to comment publicly on the claims made earlier today by at-

Gun access and violence is a far broader problem than this incident, and we all need to address it as a society, no matter where we stand on other issues. We look forward to sharing facts and findings of the incident, as developed within the legal proceedings.” “Thorns on the Rose: Black Abuse, Corruption and the Pasadena Police” will be released on Thursday, April 8. 04.01.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

Pauline Field fights for the rights of women By Rohit Lakshman Pasadena Weekly Staff Writer
P
auline Field has seen her fair share of sexism and harassment. She recalled being invited to travel for work, but the reasons were less than noble. “The only reason my supervisor took me was because he thought he could take advantage of me,” Field said. “He came knocking at my hotel door that evening. When I got back to New York, I thought, ‘Well, he’s going to fire me because I wasn’t doing what he wanted, so why don’t I resign before that happens?’” Field spearheads 50/50 Leadership, an organization that works to create a level playing field for all genders working toward leadership positions. The 50/50 Leadership programs offers courses in two major areas: leadership, with Pauline Field spearheads 50/50 events such as women’s roundtables and youth Leadership, which will host a leadership programs, and financial literacy, with summit in August. two free courses on investment and financial management. “Our main program of financial literacy is so important because we can’t do much without money, and if we don’t have a good relationship with money, and we don’t know how to manage it to our benefit, then we don’t have as much agency in the world,” Field said. While serving as an executive at International Fieldwork Inc., a management consulting agency, Field was often the only woman at business events, consultations and meetings. One of the few women in leadership positions, Field heard crass jokes and was interrupted. There was no shortage of microaggressions in such a male-dominated space. “I didn’t necessarily have to wave the banner at work, you know, ‘I’m a woman, I’m a feminist,’” Field said. “When I started 50/50 Leadership, I really wanted to let people know about the problems. It’s one thing to see women portrayed by the media as ‘the first one of this, the first one of that,’ but it doesn’t really say what we had to go through.” 50/50 Leadership took shape after Field passed and funded the city of Glendale Commission on the Status of Women, and served as commissioner on this board. After dealing in politics for a few years following the commission, Field wanted a way to give more back to the community. From her experiences prior at International Fieldwork Inc., it was clear what the next step was: an advocacy group for not just equality, but equity between men and women in leadership positions. However, simply bringing women into leadership positions in corporations and companies is not enough. Field argued that the values of many corporations must change to benefit all of their employees, including their females. “I have heard men proudly talk about how they make these multibillion-dollar deals and then wave it off with a ‘then the attorneys get to work it out,’” she said. “There is never a thought about the impact to the employees, to their contractors, to the environment, to the greater community in which they operate. None of that.” Women often address these problems as they come, Field said. With more women in leadership positions at corporations, men and women can learn how to be more compassionate executives. As in her bio on 5050leadership.org states, “just as mothers would walk in front of a bus to save their child, so we each can find a similar passion and commitment that pushes us onward, removing fear and doubt so we simply do what we know to be right.” Field elaborated on that intuitive feeling of “rightness,” which comes with motherhood. “The last couple of generations have been saying, ‘We can’t just rape and pillage our way through to success,’” she said. “There has to be something for the greater good, so if we’re going to do that, then the vision, the mission, the values of a corporation should shift from ‘let’s just make as much money as we can make for our shareholders.’” Field said she believes this new generation of workers has made huge strides in gender equality and equity, and that while corporations have a long way to go if they want to be a truly level playing field, that dream of 50/50 leadership that began 16 years ago may not be very far away. As for the future of 50/50 Leadership, the organization has many plans for 2021. From summits in August to constant updates from the group’s newsletter, there is always more to learn from the leaders at 50/50 Leadership. Field said she wants women and girls to feel confident about themselves. “[Women] should know that they are worthy. They have every right to be at whatever table they want to be at.” Photo courtesy of Pauline Field

Altadena march draws attention to Asian hate crimes By Christopher Nyerges Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

ue to the rise in Asian hate crimes, about 70 people marched against the attacks, starting at Loma Alta Park in Altadena, on March 28. Dena United, a coalition of social justice organizations within Altadena, organized the event. Coming together for the organization are My Tribe Rise, Soul Force Project and SURJ Altadena. After an inspirational talk by Pastor Steven Wong, the group peacefully walked down Lincoln Avenue to Charles White Park. There, speakers shared their thoughts on the problem and what can be done about it. Altadenan and musical teacher Alma Cielo performed a spiritual piece on her violin. She Heavenly Hughes of My Tribe talked about growing up Filipino and yet had no Rise speaks during a march connection to her roots. She left Yale and moved against Asian hate crimes. to the Philippines to study and learn about her heritage. Other speakers shared their stories of personal identity, racism and the fear of speaking out because of cultural assumptions. “This must stop,” said Casty Fortich, who is Filipino American. “We need to stop this racism. If we’re kind to each other, maybe we can put an end to this.” Altadena Councilmember Dorothy Wong shared her challenges of finding her identity, especially after moving to LA from Hawaii. “As in the natural world, we are stronger together,” said Wong, who added children are the future. “Our society is divided, and we must be mindful of each other. We can make a difference if we work together. Now is the time for opportunity and change.”

Health officials are working to get enough people vaccinated to make sure variants of the virus won’t create another surge. Infection rates over a seven-day average have hovered between 5.28 and 8.28 cases per day during the past three weeks. Dr. Ying-Ying Goh, Pasadena’s public health director, said although having a case rate of zero would be the best possible scenario, it’s not going to happen because of the various reopenings of business sectors in Pasadena. Pasadena reported its first case of the B117 variant a week ago, and socialization puts people at risk because of the more infectious variants. There are two other California strains, but they have not been reported in Pasadena. • Every adult will be eligible to get a vaccine on April 15. Beginning April 1, every adult over the age of 50 will be eligible. Vaccine supply has been a major issue recently, but if the city’s supply doesn’t increase, patients can get doses through local pharmacies and health care providers. Currently, 42.4% of Pasadena city residents have received at least one dose, while 24.2% are fully vaccinated. White and Asian residents are still more likely to receive the vaccine than Latinos or Black people, although all four demographics are seeing proportional increases every week. In California, more than 13 million doses have been administered and about 35% have received at least one dose while about 18% of the population is fully vaccinated. • Hospitalizations at Huntington Hospital were stagnant this week, with 16 patients in the coronavirus unit with only one patient in the intensive care unit. There were more than 200 hospitalized patients at Huntington Hospital during the pandemic’s peak. Pasadena has reported 11,132 infections with 335 total deaths. mdr. Emily Royse, an amphibious warfare (AMW) warfare tactics instructor (WTI) from South Pasadena, became the first female WTI to command at-sea, when she assumed command of the Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship USS Rushmore (LSD 47) Feb. 4. Royse fleeted-up from her position as Rushmore’s executive officer, after being relieved by Lt. Cmdr. Tammi Ballinger, from Berea, Kentucky; a fellow female graduate from the same October 2017 AMW WTI course. “I am extremely proud to continue leading the crew of Rushmore to tactical excellence,” Royse said. “Building the tactical proficiency and warfighting Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship USS Rushskills of our sailors is critical to more is led by Amphibious Warfare Tactics Instrucmaintaining the peak operational tors (WTIs) Lt. Cmdr. Tammi Ballinger, left, and readiness required of all warships Cmdr. Emily Royse, both graduates of the same in support of the high-end fight.” October 2017 Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Naval Surface and Mine Development Center (SMWDC) WTI course. Royse is Warfighting Development Center a South Pasadena native. (SMWDC) accepts applications from top-talented junior surface warfare officers and develops them into expert tacticians in four surface warfare areas — AMW, Integrated Air and Missile Defense, Mine Warfare, and Anti-Surface Warfare/Surface Warfare. “After completing the warfighting curriculum, we are assigned to WTI production tours where we hone our skills in billets at-sea or ashore,” Ballinger said. “During production tours we bring our skills to bear by providing advanced tactical training, developing tactics and doctrine, providing operational support, and crafting capability assessments.” WTI candidates complete instructor and tactics training and 14 to 33 weeks of warfighting tactics training (dependent upon the warfare area). The 15-week AMW WTI course of instruction is focused on all aspects of AMW. Students apply amphibious doctrine and tactics, techniques, and procedures during the course through student-led briefings, practical applications, and open forum discussions. Students exercise tactics in synthetic training evolutions conducted at the Center for Surface Combat Systems’ Ship Self-Defense Systems trainer onboard Wallops Island, and one-on-one immersion training with Marine Corps personnel from each element of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force on board Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The immersive experience teaches students to plan and execute missions across the range of military operations with their Marine Corps counterparts — a crucial element of AMW mission success. Royse completed her production tour at SMWDC headquarters in San Diego where she planned and executed the first Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) Surface Warfare Advanced Tactical Training (SWATT) exercise aboard USS Essex (LHD 2). Ballinger completed her production tour at Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) at Quantico, Virginia, where she facilitated the seven-week capstone tabletop exercise in Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) operations — utilizing the Marine Corps Planning Process to the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Navy students attending the 41-week EWS resident professional military education. Royse noted the road to success varies, but that it’s important to keep charging toward goals no matter what they are, and if something interests you, pursue it with a passion. Maintain professional curiosity and do things outside of your comfort zone — and volunteer for every opportunity to broaden your expertise. “All of the successful men and women I know in these positions [CO, XO, CMC] are passionate about their jobs and are intensely driven to succeed in both their personal and professional lives,” Royse said. “But they also realize it takes friendship, mentorship and a strong support network to succeed. You can’t do it alone; leverage the experience around you; ask questions, be bold, and don’t let a fear of failure hold you back from trying.” Ballinger spoke about the importance of working hard, learning from your mistakes, and seeking guidance when needed. “My advice would be to seek out a successful mentor who is on a similar career path in the Navy as to what you wish to pursue,” said Ballinger. “Set professional goals for yourself, seek constructive feedback, and keep doing your best for the Navy in the billets you are assigned. Some day you could find yourself the next CMC, executive officer, and/or commanding officers of a United States warship.” SWOs interested in professional growth and development with opportunities to increase the fleet’s readiness and lethality can email the WTI program managers at SWO_WTI@navy.mil. SMWDC is in California and Virginia and is focused on each of the four core-WTI surface warfare areas. Photo by Ensign Heather Brown/released

CHAASTE FAMILY MARKET
296 Allen Avenue, Suite 3, Pasadena 626-796-1527, chaastefamily.com
The staff at Chaaste Family Market includes, from left, Payomi Haser, Gabriel Esteban, Susan Esteban, Christian Esteban, Abraham Esteban and Ariel Shindledecker.
F
ive years ago, Christian Esteban worked in the Philippines as the on-camera host of a popular travel and destination show for a major Filipino TV network. His mother, Susan, called him from the family’s Pasadena home and implored Christian to return home. His father, the family patriarch — Arturo “Art” Esteban, an aerospace engineer recently retired from J.P.L. — was diagnosed with dementia and the family’s longstanding business, Chaaste Family Market, was struggling to survive. The oldest of three brothers, Christian, now 38, returned to Pasadena and rallied his two younger siblings Abraham, 33, and Gabriel, 30, to assist at the store. Soon enough, the small Filipino market and restaurant corrected its course. The experience proved useful over the past year of pandemic pivots. Operating hours were adjusted, and the dining area was cleared and narrowed to accommodate take out customers only. Chaaste Family Market has occupied the corner store of a modest strip mall on Allen Avenue and Corson Street, since its opening in 1987. At the time, the mall represented a prominent beachhead for local business, in Pasadena’s small Filipino community. This included George’s Hot Grill, opened by another family member. It represented the first Filipino restaurant in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley. As Christian suggested, every Filipino family is an extended family and the Estebans were among the very first Filipino families to settle in Pasadena, following the end of World War II. “My grandfather arrived here in 1949.” A former Filipino scout for the U.S. Army, Gregorio Esteban survived the notorious Bataan death march. “He received the Purple Heart,” Christian said. “He was an agriculturalist. He knew what to eat to survive. We lived in a tropical area. We’re farmers.” A family friend, Paul Ordinario, helped bring the rest of the family from the Philippines to Pasadena. His insurance agency is still next door to the market. “They’re a unique generation,” Christian said. “They don’t talk about the racism, but it did exist.” Originally, Susan Esteban intended to open the market elsewhere, as Christian explained. “They had an influx of Filipinos in Eagle Rock,” Christian said. “Real estate was less expensive. My mom was supposed to open (the store) in Eagle Rock.” Art Esteban insisted on Pasadena and the present location, where the city’s small-but-burgeoning Filipino community was firmly taking root. Art served in the U.S. military before matriculating from Cal State LA and working in the aerospace industry, the last 22 years of which were spent at J.P.L. He died from complications of dementia in December. “There was nothing he couldn’t do,” Christian said. “He was a jack-of-all-trades. He could do anything.” Art was instrumental in preparing the store’s space in advance of opening the market. In the meantime, Susan was in the midst of a major career transition. “My mom, prior to this, she was one of the first three Asian women employees at Warner Bros. Records,” Christian said. Susan was the original chef for the “Turo Turo” steam table delicacies that anchor the

Mama Sans Turon. restaurant portion of the business. Although the formats and inventories of Chaaste Family Market continue to evolve, half the space is devoted to a variety of items imported from the Philippines. The other half is devoted to freshly prepared food. “Turo Turo” literally translates to “point point,” referring to the manner by which a guest indicates selected preferences from the array of dishes, served cafeteria style, from the steam table. It’s a common format in Filipino markets. When the Esteban brothers transformed the family business’ fortunes five years ago, menu changes were discussed. However, ultimately Susan’s sensibility and instincts prevailed. “We keep it traditional,” Christian said. “My mom is not doing fusion.” These days, the youngest Esteban brother, Gabriel, claims the title of chef. Classically trained in continental cuisine and methods at culinary school in the Philippines, his move into the kitchen at the family market wasn’t intuitive. At culinary school, Gabriel learned to cook European dishes. He was mentored by his mother in Filipino, home-style cooking. “It’s in our blood,” Gabriel said. And mom hasn’t left the kitchen entirely. “Gabriel is the chef, but my mom always has the final say,” Christian said. “My mom checks the food. She has to taste it.” Lunchtime regulars still arrive at the steam table with the query, “Hey, what did mama cook today?” Today? The options at the Turo Turo counter will vary, though staples like pancit noodles, chicken adobo, barbecued pork tocino, lechon pork belly and lumpia rolls are reliably available—if they’re not sold out. The menu layout is displayed on a board, priced at large, medium and small portions as follows: meat ($8.99/$6.99/$5.75); vegetable ($6.75/$5.25/$4.25) and pancit, the fine, curling rice noodles ($5.25/$4.25/$3.25). There are typically a dozen options, half of them stalwarts and half rotating out. Fish dishes have been featured lately during Lent. Questions? Ask whichever friendly family member is serving at the counter. Chaaste Family Market is also known for their sweets. Turon, or a banana fritter, is more of a thin, crisp fried egg roll wrapper encasing a thick banana custard. Here, they come in exotic flavors including very berry, cookies and cream and pumpkin pie. The newest flavor is Art’s Guava. The turon is priced at $1.75 and $1.95 a piece; there’s a minimum three-piece order. There’s also Halo Halo ($9), featuring shaved ice and ube ice cream. By the way, the name of the market is an acronym of family names: Christian (CH); Arturo (A); Abraham (A); Susan (S); Torres (T, Susan’s maiden name) and Esteban (E). It is otherwise pronounced as and signifies the word “chaste” suggesting abstinent purity. A devout Catholic family, the Esteban brothers all attended St. Francis High School in Pasadena. The brothers were sent to the Philippines for their college and university educations, attending the best schools in Manila, on mom’s orders. “She wanted us to experience our culture,” said Christian, who, like his brothers, earned a master’s degree. The extended Esteban family continues to extend into the next generation. In September, Christian married Cayla Johnson, who’s fluent in Tagalog, having been raised in the Philippines. She met Christian at the Turo Turo counter at the store. The couple are expecting their first child in June. Meanwhile, Abraham’s fianceé Ariel Shindledecker is mastering mom’s turon and flan recipes. Another extended family member — Taiomi Haser — assists Gabriel in the kitchen. There is a lovely, benign bustle of activity in the store, and everybody actually seems to be having fun. “It’s always been family,” Christian said. “Now it’s immediate family. We’re getting intimate with the store. We’re trying to keep the culture alive. Food is the universal language of the Philippines. Food and dancing. Good vibes all around.”

Jeremy Tash makes healthful kombucha, pickled foods By Christopher Nyerges Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer
S
ince 2019, Jeremiah Tash, 39, has been selling his array of pickled foods and kombucha at farmers markets, and directly to the public. “We make kombucha, and we also ferment various vegetables, including dishes like kimchi, sauerkrauts and everything else from carrots to beets to snap peas,” Tash said. “One thing that separates us is that I have about six to seven rotating sauerkraut flavors, so we have a plethora of offerings.” Not everyone has heard of “kombucha,” Tash explains. Kombucha starts with an organic green tea base. Bacteria and yeast are introduced so it ferments into a kombucha. The flavor is smoother than black tea and has more antioxidants. “Kombucha is a powerful source of probiotics, which strengthen your microbiome, particularly in your stomach,” Tash said. “We are learning that most of your body’s hormones are secreted and regulated in your stomach, so this is important stuff. Low probiotic levels have been linked with issues like depression, anxiety and sleep-disorders. The benefits of kombucha are myriad, but we are careful to design each flavor as a gourmet product: there’s no reason you can’t enjoy something that’s also beneficial.” His sales table also contains bottled vegetables. Tash further explained his vegetables are lacto-fermented, which simply means that it is a salt-based process. “People sometimes think ‘lacto’ means there’s lactose involved, but it’s short for lactobacillus, a probiotic bacterium that thrives in a high-salt environment,” he said. “All our veggies are fermented in the jar we sell them in, which means they are alive and full of probiotics when you open them. Also, fermenting veggies breaks
down their enzymes and increases bioavailability, so fermented veggies are better for you than raw ones.” Tash had been drinking kombucha for about a decade and had no clue how it was produced. Then someone gave him SCOBY (which means, symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, which is the bacteria and yeast needed to ferment tea into kombucha). “I found it easy and fun to produce, and I quickly considered the business aspects,” he explained. Tash found a website that gave details for the cultivation, and, with a few books, he was in business. He started his business, Jarring, in November 2018, to produce superior food products. He made sauerkrauts and kimchi, and kombucha. He began selling at the Echo Park Farmers Market and since has sold at the farmers markets at Altadena, Atwater Village, Hollywood, and Highland Park. Currently, he sells at Highland Park, Echo Park, Altadena, North Hollywood, Atwater Village and Hollywood farmers markets. “People often want to know how much of my products they should eat and what to eat the foods with,” he said. “But I’m more of a chef than a doctor, so I am more comfortable telling people how to eat, not how much.” Having worked in and managed restaurants, Tash has some understanding of the food scene in LA. His favorite hobby is traveling, and he gravitates toward countries with strong food cultures, because he’s always looking to try new cuisines. He lives in Elysian Valley with his Australian Cattle Dog mutt and his four kittens. Tash can be reached at jarringfoods.com or on Instagram @jarringfooods.

• ARTS & CULTURE • Paul Stanley shows a little soul on his new album By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor

L
ong before Paul Stanley found success with Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Kiss, he was checking out the heavy hitters like Otis Redding in concert. The experience was eye-opening, he said via Zoom. “It really showed me that greatness has no color, has no ethnicity, has no shape, has no size,” Stanley said. “You are aware when you’re in the presence of greatness, and it’s not something that’s easily defined there. “There have been moments like that in my life where I have been very lucky, and Otis was certainly one of them.” Stanley took experiences like that and rolled it into the band Soul Station, which just released its first full-length album, “Now and Then,” which covers the Temptations, the Delfonics, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Five original tracks fit snugly with the covers. Soul Station, Stanley’s 15-piece ensemble group, has toured the United States and Japan, but it wasn’t until recently that it could enter the studio together and record “Now and Then.” To help Stanley create the sound, he recruited the likes of Rafael “Hoffa” Moreira (guitar and backing vocals), Sean Hurley (bass), Alex Alessandroni (musical director, keyboards), Ely Rise (keyboards), Eric Singer (drums and backing vocals), Ray Yslas (percussion), Gavyn Rhone (backing vocals), Crystal Starr (backing vocals), Laurhan Beato (backing vocals) and Jon Pappenbrook (lead trumpet). “We have such a ball,” he said. “We’ve been doing this for years now. We’re not a band that got together in the studio and wants to go play live. We’re a live band that’s gone into the studio, which comes across. “We get along so great. We’re constantly texting each other or calling. It shows how exciting friendships can be when you’re not all bringing the same thing to the table. If you watch the videos, there is a lot of smiling because we have a ball.” Stanley said the group found it satisfying to take on classic hits like “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” “Ooo Baby Baby,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)” and “The Tracks of My Tears.” “I’ve loved the songs since they came out,” he said. “I grew up with all this music, and I’ve always sung these songs at home. “I’m not Eddie Kendricks, and I’m not Al Green. I’m not Levi Stubbs. I’m me. I believe that if you understand a song, if you can get into the intent of the song and the emotion behind it, you should be able to sing it — if you’re a singer.” Stanley wanted to focus on and respect the melodies, so he didn’t change much when he recorded the songs. “I also didn’t want to do paint by numbers,” Stanley said. “This wasn’t impersonations. This was me singing those songs, and from the response I’ve gotten from people who I look up to, mission accomplished.” Songs like “Just My Imagination” proved to be challenging, but the mission was definitely accomplished, based on a conversation had with Otis Williams. “Subtle songs can be like threading a needle,” he said. “There’s not a lot of leeway on either side. ‘Just My Imagination’ is a beautiful, beautiful song. It’s eloquent. Otis Williams is the keeper of the flame for the Temptations. He said to me, ‘I’ve listened to your version over and over, and it’s as good as ours is.’ “You have to put that into perspective. I certainly do. Our reverence, our respect and our dedication to performing these songs come across. If Otis says that, then I would say that the defense rests.” He hopes Kiss fans will love the music as much as he does. “I hope they can be shown that there’s only two types of music — that’s good and bad,” he said. “If you only listen to one kind of music, it’s like eating one kind of food over and over and over. “There’s a lot of great music out there, and it doesn’t necessarily all fall into the same category.”
Paul Stanley is paying homage to his heroes on Soul Station’s debut fulllength album, “Now and Then.” It showcases his originals (“Now”) and covers (“Then”). 04.01.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 15

Locals wordsmiths have plans for National Poetry Month By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer
“P
oetry leaves room for silence. And poetry makes room for questions that are unanswerable and for them to sit there.” —Richard Blanco April is National Poetry Month — an annual event created 25 years ago by the Academy of American Poets that has grown into an annual celebration for poets, poetry lovers, schools, libraries and their communities. To celebrate poetry is to foster discovery and engagement in that form, with its simultaneous compression and expansion of language. It’s a form uniquely suited to moments of contemplation as well as crisis. LA-raised poet Amanda Gorman, the former National Youth Poet Laureate who electrified the world with her presidential inauguration poem “The Hill We Climb,” recently tweeted, “Poetry is the language of power & the language of the people … creatives bring vision to change not yet accomplished and words to dreams not yet named.” South Pasadena Poet Laureate Ron Koertge (ronkoertge.com) was inspired by Gorman’s poem as well as National Public Radio’s Poet-in-Residence Kwame Alexander’s crowd-sourced “This Is Our Dream” to compose a similarly community-themed poem with input from local residents. The South Pasadena Public Library plans to publish “Beginnings” this month. One of the goals of National Poetry Month is to motivate poetry lovers to write a poem a day throughout April. Descanso Gardens is encouraging people to slow down, tune into their natural surroundings, and create their own haiku — the ancient three-line form of Japanese poetry (descansogardens.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Haiku-instructions.pdf). Da Poetry Lounge has taken its open mic nights online during the pandemic; consult its calendar (dapoetrylounge.com) for details. Alternatively, listen to or read poetry. Scroll through Da Poetry Lounge’s ample library of soul-gripping poetry performances (youtube.com/c/DaPoetryLounge/videos) as well as Poetry.LA’s video gallery of Southern California poets (poetry.la). Hear readings of selections from “Altadena Literary Review 2020” (and also stop by last year’s Poetry & Cookies virtual gathering) at Altadena Library’s YouTube channel (https://bit.ly/3deMMuV). Consider signing up for Poem-a-Day (poets.org/poem-a-day), or seek out anthologies of local and regional poets. Pasadena Rose Poets’ “Poetry Collection 2019” (subtitled “Reflection. Resistance. Reckoning. Resurrection.”) gathers pieces from local artists Teresa Mei Chuc, Mel Donalson, Kate Gale, Damian Gonzalez, Hazel Clayton Harrison, Gerda Govine Ituarte, Shahé Mankerian, Toni Mosley, Carla Sameth and Annette Wong (shabdapress.com). The Altadena Poetry Review publishes poets from Altadena, Pasadena and LA County with a mission to “encourage and uplift submissions from historically underrepresented voices;” find information about past print anthologies and read new works by Altadena Poets Laureate Jessica Abughattas and Khadija Anderson, among others, at altadenapoetryreview.com. Also check out “When the Virus Came Calling: COVID-19 Strikes America,” edited by Pasadena poet Thelma T. Reyna, which bears witness to the pandemic through essays, fiction and poetry. It features local poets such as Khadija Anderson, Don Kingfisher Campbell, and members of the Pasadena Rose Poets (goldenfoothillspress.com). Explore the masterful cross-section of classic and contemporary, regional and national poets (including Octavia E. Butler, Wanda Coleman, Classic Slam Alumna Amanda Gorman, Kendrick Lamar, and newly appointed L.A. Poet Laureate Lynne Thompson) in the Get Lit Anthology (getlitanthology.org). The 2015 collection “Wide Awake: Poets of Los Angeles and Beyond,” edited by LA literary doyenne Suzanne Lummis, is a generous sampler of work by area poets, including Dorothy Barresi, Luís Campos, Alexis Rhone Fancher, former L.A. Poet Laureate Luis J. Rodriguez, and Mike Sonksen (beyondbaroque.org). Follow poetry releases from small Southland publishers; there are too many to mention here, but a good starting place would be Pasadena’s Red Hen Press (redhenpress.
org), Sylmar’s Luis Rodriguez-launched Tia Chucha Press (tiachucha.org/tia_chucha_press), and the Venice-based Beyond Baroque’s Pacific Coast Poetry Series (beyondbaroque.org/ bbbooks_pcps.html). Save the dates for LitFest Pasadena’s May 15 and May 16 festival, which will include poetry readings from “unusual” locations (litfestpasadena.org). Krista Tippett’s “On Being” radio show and podcast calls poetry “a necessary art.” U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, in a 2019 interview with American Poets, said, “Without poetry, we lose our way.” While we await the return of live poetry readings and literary, take part in National Poetry Month with these virtual events: • Pasadena Central Library hosts a reading on Zoom by Thelma T. Reyna, former poet laureate of Altadena, from “Dearest Papa: A Memoir in Poems,” inspired by the unexpected death of her husband of 50 years. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction.
