The Seven Stages of Creativity
eo Tolstoy said, “Spring is the time for plans and projects.” This year, American women all over the country are making plans to remove hair that has enjoyed a hirsute hiatus during lockdown. Many of us are also starting new projects, including me. I love crafting bold new endeavors, but I don’t enjoy administering them once they have taken hold. I am what they call “a creative.” If you’re a creative or happen to know one, I’d like to share with you a spot-on meme that has been around for a few years. It perfectly encapsulates the experience of creating something from nothing: The Seven Stages of Creativity This is awesome! This is OK. This isn’t working. This is poop. I am poop. Hmmm, this isn’t so bad after all. This is awesome! Repeat… I can see this at work all over my life — relationships, writing and, especially, when it came to the theater. In the early ’70s, I started a theatrical company with friends. We were all women who had plenty of theater experience and knew how much the field was skewed toward men. The norm at that time was that most plays were written by men and featured at best two roles for the gals versus eight for the guys. Worse, our typical parts were either as madonna or whore. Sometimes a play had one of each — woo-hoo! We wanted to create a new kind of theater, a training ground for both us and the audience, reflecting women’s lives as actually lived. And so we did.
6. Hmmm, this isn’t so bad after all — We went all-out to invite everyone we knew to our company opening. The party was terrific. The Men’s Auxiliary group was stellar. People had a great time, and we raised enough money to pay everyone in the company … except management. 7. This is awesome! — When the reviews came out, we discovered that they liked us; they really, really liked us! The Los Angeles Times came to Santa Barbara to do a cover story for the Sunday Calendar section. Ms. Magazine ran a piece about our bold experiment in theater. I know not everyone is into doing big projects that involve other people like our theater did. But the Seven Stages of Creativity apply to any size project, from arts and crafts to writing a short story or a novel, or even making a movie. (Definitely making a movie!) Meanwhile, have a lovely spring and see if you can start a project of your own using this wisdom. Pass the Seven Stages on to the dreamers in your life. As the great Oscar Wilde said, “The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself.” Ellen Snortland has written “Consider This…” for a heckuva long time, and she also coaches first-time book authors! Contact her at ellen@beautybitesbeast.com.

1. This is awesome! — Theater of Process debuted in Santa Barbara with the audacity of being comprised of all women, all the time. We also debuted new works written by women. 2. This is OK — As with most projects, reality soon set in as we creatives grasped how much work it would require. We produced three plays opening within weeks of each other to rotate in repertory; just one would be a huge undertaking. And then there was having to sell tickets to everyone and their aunties. 3. This isn’t working — I was in charge of subscriptions because I had a set of highly developed “invite until I drop” muscles. The rest of the company? Not so much. To get butts in seats, I had the idea of running an ad in the Santa Barbara News-Press. It read: “Put a little play in your life! Subscribe now. 19 women nightly. Call 805555-1212.” Soon the phone started ringing off the hook from men looking for “a little play” … A week later, at a late-night rehearsal, the Santa Barbara PD vice squad burst through the doors to shut us down. We did sell more tickets. 4. This is poop — With three concurrent shows prepped by 19 people, clashes were inevitable. We broke into classic tribalism. The labor people were sure they could run things better than we could in management. Secretly, we wished they’d shut up and just mutiny already. We felt that if their back-seat driving was better than our madly careening around curves, we would happily give up the wheel. 5. I am poop — Much of the discontent was focused on me. I suspect that was because I was not very nice. I get tense and uptight when I’m scared, OK? I didn’t know how to manage my own fear; instead, I got bigger and louder. My management partners had my back, and they were happy I was the lightning rod that took some of the heat off them. I eventually apologized to everyone for getting them into this “All Women Theater” mess.

•GUEST OPINION• BY JAMES FARR
Discover your power of agency S
ummer 2016, July to be specific. Much like many I know, we were frozen watching coverage of three brothers having contact with law enforcement and trade words for bullets. I was on vacation with my wife. What should have been a few happy days in the Mile High City, I found myself in deep sadness and weeping — a deep bellowing cry. My heart sank. I was vicariously traumatized and bruised. The homicides of Delrawn Small, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were on loop for days in a world in which people would rather capture cellphone video of violence, than use their mobile device to summon for help. The string of deaths began on the Fourth of July, when Small was fatally shot by an off-duty cop in Brooklyn early Monday after a road-rage incident quickly intensified. Sterling was killed early Tuesday by Baton Rouge police officers responding to a call about an armed man. A gruesome video showing the 37-year-old Sterling pinned to the ground before he is shot by one of the two arresting officers went viral, inciting outrage on social media and sparking protests in the Louisiana capitol. Then, on Wednesday night, Castile was shot multiple times by a police officer in Falcon Heights, a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota, after the 32-year-old was pulled over in a routine traffic stop for a busted taillight. In that moment, I wasn’t thinking about how to process it. I was flat out heartbroken. As clarity set in, I realized of the hundreds of thousands of contacts that police have over the past several years... we’ve seen 20 to 30 incidents looping, constantly playing, and forwarding a narrative advancing the concept, “There are dead Black men laying in the streets and you may be next.” That’s terrifying and paralyzing to think that everyone can be the next victim. Who are these people perpetuating the loop? And what do they have to gain by looping our demise? I didn’t know what I could do or if I did, would it matter. Later, I would hear the phrase “L.O.V.E. is the answer.” I viewed the film “Walking while Black: L.O.V.E. is the Answer” and it would challenge me to open up my heart and consider reconciliation. But before I could consider its solutions, I have to take you back into my journey, that at times was filled with anxiety and anger. From Ferguson, to Baltimore, to Los Angeles, to NFL football games, the issue of police brutality and racial profiling has ignited a national debate and a grassroots movement for reform. Pasadena, where I live, is not immune to this problem. A recent incident — the unwarranted and brutal beating of Chris Ballew by two Pasadena police officers — has triggered a local campaign to address the Pasadena Police Department’s use-of-force practices and policies and to engage John Perez, the new police chief in constructive discussion. I decided to attempt to learn about him as a person. Would he, as my media colleague Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey says, give us “company speak” and “circle the wagons” to
spin narratives to serve and protect his rank and file? Would he be full of smoke? Or, would he step up and get this smoke from a community experiential lens? More about the formation of our relationship later. On a trip to D.C. visiting the MLK memorial, I came across this quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” In keeping with his prescient admonition, I am determined to create and maintain dialogues within and across communities that will promote actionable steps followed by sustainable change. In short, I am elated to have had the support of the late Rabbi Marv Gross, Pastor Lucious Smith and Adjoa Annang, along with other leaders of the local Jewish and African American communities as their example of unity has made King’s call for love, understanding, empathy, and mutuality all the more received. It is incumbent upon all of us, regardless of our particular subjectivities be they varied by ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, etc., to realize that a threat to one is a threat to all. The time for action is now and the particularity of the moment is critical. In the age of the 24/7 news cycle, where new topics trend across social media as ephemeral crisis du jour, the one consistent that has maintained has been the all-out assault on not only the Black body, but the Black psyche, both in a collective sense. After spending literal days reviewing the Ballew case, after incessant viewings, following countless interviews, the video, the imagery, the injustice has been seared into my psyche. I worry, not just for myself, but for others who occupy similar identities — like my two young children, who will inherit a community and world, in which they are born suspects. As recently as this past summer, I was stopped on the train for having fallen asleep en route to my destination. I was awoken by the jarring shoves of transit security, which after the Oscar Grant homicide, in the Bay Area, were especially troubling. Instead of choosing to de-escalate this particular officer saw fit to perceive a sleeping, Black male body as somehow inherently criminal and troublesome. Thankfully, experience and maturity were on my side, as I knew my rights. The transit officer seemed far less interested in pursuing me as an imagined threat after I began recording and told him he was accosting me for no good reason. Though I was able to de-escalate the situation, others ignorant of their rights are rarely as fortunate. At the very least, they are trafficked through the criminal (in)justice system, railroaded by innocuous offenses on their rap sheets. At worst, they don’t make it out alive to tell their stories. We cannot let the abnormal become normalized. Blackness is not a crime and to conflate the two when coupled with the callous disregard of power-tripping authority becomes a game with potentially, and too often, fatal consequences. Unfortunately, every Black man of a certain age has a police story. Seemingly with-

ADVERTISING SALES EXECUTIVE
Since 1998 Times Media Group has been a locally owned news and entertainment media company. Fast forward to today and TMG is now one of the largest print and digital media companies in the Southwest. With this level of growth and expansion we need to add to our multi-media sales team. out fail these encounters with authority are trappings of Black adulthood. Judged by our color and stripped of our humanity, these narratives become all too common, and as mentioned, the exceptionality of certain cases only lies in the fact that sometimes they are recorded on video. Without question, however, they are recorded and registered in our memories. Scarred by this psychic trauma, the rewatchings, reairings, and seemingly looped videos of wholesale executions of our Black brothers only serves to personalize perilous potentialities. “What if that had been me? That could have been me.” With my own independent journalistic efforts through The Conversation.Live, I am able to affect change through meaningful dialogue and constructive conversation. This speaks to the power of agency when located squarely within a chain of like-minded change agents. Though I never saw myself as an agent provocateur prior, it is a label which I proudly now wear. It’s more than a role, but a responsibility I bear and in which, I take tremendous pride. I once saw myself as only wearing the family man hat as a loving husband and devoted father. Others who have noticed my activism have now labeled me an independent journalist, filmmaker, author and agent provocateur. I have happily accepted the flattery and challenge my colleagues to answer the call to action similarly. We all have certain strengths, motivations and roles we can play to offset the evils of injustice. This is not a “me” thing, but a “we” thing. We are a community united and together, only acting in informed unison, in synch and in step with the mutuality of our ultimate objectives for a better tomorrow, can we expect things to change. Agency on the individual level, naturally lends itself to agency on a collective one. Famed rap artist and activist Tupac Shakur once said, “I may not be the brain that changes the world, but I will spark the one that does.” This is directly in dialogue with the aforementioned MLK Jr. quote which I used to open. Despite the apparent juxtaposition Shakur’s assiduous and intensive community-building efforts are often overshadowed in the popular imagination by his “gangster-rapper” persona. This alone is a virulent reduction of his multivalent layers, manifold. Back to Chief Perez. In our many conversations, he showed up vulnerable, open and willing to listen. At times, our discussion turned contentious, he was willing to go down the pathway of some critical and uncomfortable dialog. Often admitting, “We can do better.” Perez wrote me, “.... In today’s environment, it is clear to me there is a societal disconnect in finding a balance on critical issues such as policing in today’s world. James Farr has been very critical of policing practices across the country as well as in Pasadena. However, our community is fortunate that he has contributed his efforts in developing connection points so we can have the difficult conversation as a community. His approach to facilitating discussions has been helpful for many to believe the right questions are being asked, regardless of how difficult it is. He has ensured these questions are answered and I appreciate his willingness to be involved in a productive manner, focused on bettering our community.”

Pasadena allows movie theaters to reopen By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

F
rom providing a livelihood for his family for three generations to the first three dates with his wife, movies have played a major role for Greg Laemmle. “Some of the greatest experience of my life has revolved around movies,” said Laemmle, the president of the theater chain bearing the family name. “My wife and I saw two bad movies on our first two dates and a great movie on our third date. I think after that great movie experience, we knew we were getting married. “There are so many things that are in my life that relate, in big and small ways, to that experience of being in that environment and seeing great art. It is the great art of the 20th century and hopefully the great art of the 21st century.” Mandated by Los Angeles County, Laemmle had to close all of the theaters as the threat of the pandemic loomed over the Los Angeles area. That meant the number of employees across the eight theaters dropped from 150 to just five. Although he supported the mandate, it was still painful for Laemmle to close the doors of the family business, which has been open since World War II. “We had to make a bunch of hard decisions very quickly,” he said. “I’ll always hope that I made the right decisions.” Luckily, after being closed for a year, the theater chain made it out to the other side. As numbers of COVID-19 cases fall in Los Angeles County, moving the region to the orange tier, movie theaters like Laemmle can reopen. Effective April 5, the LA County and Pasadena Public Health Department allowed the reopening of indoor movie theaters at 50% capacity per auditorium. Laemmle announced that it will reopen six locations, including the one in Pasadena, the following Friday, April 9. Although much of the equipment has been mothballed and major maintenance must be done of the theaters, Laemmle is excited to provide the same movie-going experience that helped him find his significant other. “I’m excited. This is what we do, what we live for and I want to get back to it,” Laemmle said. “To give people that social experience to guide their week is important… We’re excited to bring it back and hopefully, our customers, whether [they’re] early adopters or not, will want it back as well.” To prepare the facilities for reopening, Laemmle rehired its longtime general managers to fix equipment, such as the all-important projectors, and to set up the appropriate equipment to provide a safe viewing experience for their guests. After a year of unemployment, general manager Geoff Waugaman has been working tirelessly to prepare the Laemmle in Pasadena for reopening. “Basically, nothing has been touched in our buildings for over a year now,” Waugaman said. “There are a million light bulbs to change, popcorn poppers to turn back on and ice machines to clean. It’s a lot of maintenance so far in the last week. (But) you can’t sit on unemployment forever and you want to get back to work, obviously.” To ensure the safety of its patrons, Laemmle is following all of the CinemaSafe protocols such as masks, reduced capacity, providing HVAC air filtration and cleaning after every screening. Masks can only be removed when they are eating or drinking. It will take some time for movie goers to feel comfortable in theaters and Laemmle knows that. “We know it will take time where people are back and they feel comfortable coming back,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll get to a place where they don’t think twice about it.”

Buchman retiring from ArtCenter College By Jered Gold Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer
A
Photo submitted
rtCenter College of Design President Dr. Lorne M. Buchman will retire from the school on June 30, 2022. “My time at the college has represented, without question, the peak of my professional life, and I will be forever grateful to this remarkable community for the opportunity to serve as its president,” Buchman said. “It has been most energizing to witness how this college has evolved over the years… I am inspired by our transformation and quite dazzled by how far we have come in our commitment to create excellence in art and design education.” Among Buchman’s goals for the next 15 months are to ensure a safe return to campus for students, faculty and staff; to engage the community in forward-looking plans for a post-pandemic ArtCenter; and to establish a two-year strategic agenda for the college — all to ensure that his successor will have a strong foundation to lead the college into the future. The college has evolved significantly during Buchman’s tenure, with sustained and noteworthy enhancements across all aspects of college life, including community building, resource development, program growth and campus expansion. Community building When Buchman took office in 2009, he engaged members of the ArtCenter community in a conversation about art and design education in the 21st century. With input from students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, donors and external partners, Buchman issued Create Change, a five-year strategic plan (2011–2016) based on the college’s conservatory-like approach to teaching and learning; a desire for rich, intercultural and transdisciplinary dialogue; and a mandate to provide students innovative learning and making spaces. Updates to the strategic plan, Create Change 2.0 (2017–2021), were driven by the question of educational value with a more specific focus on student success; diversity, equity and inclusion; curricular innovation and strategic infrastructure. A cornerstone of Buchman’s community-building efforts and strategic plan development was his continued emphasis on shared governance. “It’s still a work-in-progress, but shared governance at ArtCenter has been critical to the progress we have made,” he said. “It has helped us enormously to draw on the wisdom of this community.” As it evolved, shared governance formalized ways in which constituents across the college could inform and participate in decisions about key initiatives of the institution, including new program growth, educational and student services, acquisition of and improvements to campus facilities; and the development of technological resources. Buchman has also been a strong advocate for the value of art and design in the larger cultural context. He hosts “Change Lab: Conversations on Transformation and Creativity,” a podcast produced by ArtCenter in which Buchman conducts interviews with artists and innovators. In its eighth season, “Change Lab” is exploring how educational leaders take on rapidly shifting instructional models, investigate radical curricular change and propose new ways to learn. His advocacy for art and design is also evident in his role as chair of the board of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design, a consortium of nearly 40 similarly focused colleges across North America that collectively support and strengthen art and design education in a global context.
Dr. Lorne M. Buchman
Resource development Buchman’s passion and deep commitment to excellence in education and his care for individuals in the community have generated an enthusiastic response from alumni, foundations, and a growing donor community with unprecedented financial support. Under Buchman’s leadership, ArtCenter surpassed its $100 million fundraising campaign goal with a total of $124 million raised. Coinciding with an increase in philanthropic support, Buchman has also recruited a diverse group of distinguished leaders to the board of trustees. Since Buchman’s arrival, board giving has totaled nearly $69.5 million with significant gifts made in support of scholarships, student services, endowment and capital projects. The trustees built, beyond its main endowment, a board-designated “quasi-endowment,” which has allowed the college to address specific areas of need, including scholarships to increase the diversity of the student body and to help upper-term students persist to graduation. In the last year, Buchman worked with the trustees to extend the use of the quasi-endowment to provide $9 million in tuition reduction grants to students facing the difficult financial challenges of the pandemic. Through Buchman’s commitment to access and affordability and the robust support that followed, the college’s financial aid capacity has also grown considerably, with a 35% increase in annual donor scholarships, 115% increase in economic diversity grants, and a 12% increase in general scholarship awards. Overall, the college has seen an increase of $12.5 million in institutional scholarships; from $6.5 million in 2009 when he arrived to approximately $19 million in 2021. Buchman also raised $2 million in endowment for a presidential discretionary fund, which he has used annually to assist students who are experiencing severe economic hardship, especially with respect to food and housing insecurity. The college is in a strong financial position. Program growth During Buchman’s presidency, the college increased the number of its degree programs in keeping with industry demand and student interest. New programs include an undergraduate degree in interaction design (BS), and graduate degrees in environmental design (MS), graphic design (MS) and transportation systems and design (MS). Existing degree offerings have also been expanded, providing students an opportunity 04.08.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 9

to study animation, game design, surface design, wearables and soft goods, and typography. Additionally, ArtCenter offers minors — a first for the college — in social innovation, business, creative writing, design research and material science. Most recently, the college also launched online programs to increase access to and the affordability of nondegree courses in art and design. Looking ahead, the college is preparing to launch two new fully online Master of Design (MDes) programs in Fall 2022. As a result of this intentional program growth, the college has realized record enrollments. The Ccollege boasts an enrollment of nearly 2,200 undergraduate and graduate students — a significant increase of 32% from 1,500 students when Buchman arrived in the Fall 2009. To support ArtCenter’s growth, Buchman has expanded the services offered to students and the larger ArtCenter community, with a new or increased focus on diversity, equity and inclusion; counseling and wellness; academic advising; career and professional development; exhibitions, funds for emergency economic response; institutional research; and environmental health and safety.
COVID Count Reported cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of April 4 South Pasadena: 1,298; Alhambra: 6,767; Unincorporated - Altadena: 3,271; Arcadia: 2,660; Glendale: 19,548; Monrovia: 3,129; San Gabriel: 3,185 Total confirmed cases in Pasadena: 11,151 Total deaths in Pasadena: 335 Total confirmed cases in LA County: 1,222,114 Total deaths in LA County: 23,275 • Pasadena has expanded vaccine eligibility to residents 50 and older due to expansions in health guidelines. According to reports, 35,944 people have been completely vaccinated and more than 60,000 people have received at least one dose in the city. Pasadena continues to increase vaccination efforts in Latino and Black communities. Only 20% of the Latino population has received at least one shot while 32% of the city’s Black community has received at least one dose. The city will mainly administer second doses this week and interest forms online have been expanded to those 16 years and older for notifications when they are eligible. About 1.4 million people in Los Angeles County are now eligible for vaccine appointments and 4 million vaccine doses have been administered. • As of Friday, Huntington Hospital had no patients in the intensive care unit. Fourteen patients are being treated for the virus at the hospital, but none require additional care from the ICU. The hospital had more than 200 patients and tens of patients in the intensive care during the height of the coronavirus pandemic in January. Pasadena officials have also reported seven new infections and zero new deaths in Pasadena, the ninth day in a row without a death. Currently, there are 11,151 cases and 335 deaths in Pasadena. Los Angeles County has reported 692 new infections and 74 deaths on Friday with a total of 1,222,114 cases and 23,275 fatalities. • Pasadena loosened restrictions on April 5 as Los Angeles County moves into the orange tier. Restaurants can allow 50% capacity or 200 people based on whichever is fewer, bars can operate outdoors, retail stores can operate indoors at 75% capacity, museums and galleries can open at 50% capacity, movie theaters can operate at 50% capacity or 200 based on whichever is fewer, and fitness centers/gyms can open at 25% capacity. Although the situation is rapidly improving, Pasadena officials urge residents to be vigilant in protecting themselves against the coronavirus. Information compiled by Doyoon Kim.
Campus expansion To accommodate growth in educational programs and student services, Buchman has nearly doubled the college’s square footage by expanding its South Campus. Originally a satellite campus for the college’s public programs, South Campus has become a nexus for ArtCenter activities at the gateway to the city of Pasadena. Growth at South Campus was made possible by the acquisition and adaptive reuse of buildings adjacent to the original wind tunnel property, including a former U.S. postal distribution facility and an office building previously occupied by Jacobs Engineering; effectively adding nearly 167,000 square feet of space across five urban acres to the college’s real estate portfolio. Buchman led the effort of a substantial remodel of both buildings and, today, South Campus encompasses a variety of classroom studios, workshops, exhibition spaces and administrative services. Expansion of South Campus has also provided room to expand and enhance resources at the college’s landmark Hillside Campus with re-imagined classroom spaces, state-of-the-art auditoriums and improvements to the overall infrastructure. In 2018, the city of Pasadena approved a comprehensive master plan for ArtCenter that charts a 15-year vision for the college’s physical campuses. The plan incorporates long-term plans for enhanced facilities and establishes a framework to guide development across both ArtCenter campuses and ensure that future changes remain in service to an engaged community. During Buchman’s tenure, ArtCenter also established new satellite locations beyond Pasadena, including ArtCenter DTLA (a gallery space in downtown Los Angeles); and a working studio classroom at the Petersen Automotive Museum in West LA. Internationally, the college has continued to offer rewarding exchange and study away opportunities with an array of global partners as well as ArtCenter Berlin, a studio space situated within one of Europe’s most dynamic capital cities. More recently, he established community hubs in Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul and Shenzhen — nonacademic gathering spaces in cities where a large number of ArtCenter students continue to take classes remotely. Board statement Following Buchman’s announcement, Su Mathews Hale, chair of ArtCenter’s board of trustees, said, “The board is indebted to Lorne for his superb and compassionate leadership. His diligent work has always been in service to our students, ensuring they receive the best possible art and design education and learn skills that will benefit them and influence the world around them long into the future. “The college has changed immeasurably over the years, and the board commends Lorne for his countless successes as president,” Mathews Hale continued. “While we’re sad to learn about his departure, we’re grateful for all he has done for the school and know that he’ll continue to produce meaningful and creative work. We wish him the best in his future adventures.” Chair emeritus, Robert C. Davidson Jr., who presided as chair during much of Buchman’s tenure, added, “Lorne has been the best President that ArtCenter or any other college could have. We have benefitted immensely from Lorne’s leadership, his admiration for the ArtCenter community and his deep affinity for the creative process. It has been my pleasure to work alongside him and he will be greatly missed.” Mathews Hale and the board of trustees have already begun planning the search for a successor. Input from all constituencies within the community — including students, faculty, staff and alumni — will be a critical part of the process.

Pasadena’s Macedo finds ‘Paradise’ with new EP By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor

win sisters Michelle and Melissa Macedo had one goal for their new EP “Paradise”: to release something positive into the world. “We usually write songs that can be a little darker,” Michelle said. “While we were in quarantine, we thought we needed — and people needed — something that can be uplifting. That’s what we tried to focus on with this EP.” Under the moniker Macedo, the Pasadena sisters serve sun-soaked classic SoCal pop

with ’90s alternative rock twist. The women said their songs prior to the pandemic are darker than the recently released tracks, which were executive produced by Anna Akana. “Can’t Imagine (Without You),” for example, is a song Macedo wrote with producer Chris Chu (The Morning Bends, Pop Etc.) about sisterhood. “It ended up being very topical and something we could really relate to,” Melissa said. “We grew up to complement each other and support each other.” Michelle added, “We grew up going to an all-girls school and, because of that, we were able to be so supportive of each other. This last year has shown us how important female friendships are. That’s really a message that we want to support and send out with the EP.” For “Paradise,” the sisters also drew inspiration from the Pasadena family home — built on an old collapsed silver mine with the vestiges of ghostly energy intact. Doors opened and closed on their own as lights flickered off and on, and one particular apparition followed them. More than anything, the experience opened their minds to “respect the other side and allow a darker quality into the writing,” Melissa said. “It started our fascination with ghosts, spirits and other worlds that exist,” Melissa said. “It was scary, but then we were always together, growing up as twins. We felt we were sensitive to that.” Michelle added, “It was scary at first, like Melissa said. However, it was not a ghost from the movies who wants to kill us. It’s just a person who’s passed on. That was super interesting. Because of that, we’re very empathic and connected emotionally to that. We started writing poetry when we were young. Those experiences helped us with writing and exploring things we can’t see.” As the pandemic shut down the world, Macedo was just about to go on tour with Akana. Instead, they studied how other acts were able to stay creative, and experimented with an Instagram live show, performed a charity gig for the Starlight Children’s Foundation and a private show for their high school, the all-girls Catholic Mayfield Senior School. “We’re very lucky,” Melissa said. “We’re twins and we have each other. We were in our quarantine pod with Anna. We collaborated a lot with her and wrote a lot of songs. I do feel like the pandemic is horrible, but one upside to being at home is you are stuck, and you have to do something.” Still, Macedo saw how it affected themselves and their friends. One of their best friends works as an event coordinator at The Huntington in San Marino. “She was saying they were so busy before and then it completely shut down,” Michelle said. “Now it’s starting to come back a little bit. We live in a beautiful place and it’s a shame it shut down. We’re grateful, though, we have nature and green around us. That helped a lot, even though it was scary to go outside.” To release the EP, Macedo signed, appropriately, to Pasadena Records, which is truly a coincidence. Macedo’s management, Jon Sidel and Ian Cunningham of Gourmet Music, pitched the act to indie labels and Pasadena Records was interested. “When the label wanted to meet with us, we said we’re actually from Pasadena,” Melissa said. “They did not even know that. It’s just all Pasadena synchronicities.” The twins grew up in Pasadena with their parents, including their father who played piano and guitar. He introduced them to a variety of music from classical to modern pop. Their grandmother was a classically trained pianist in LA. Macedo began performing around the LA scene when they were 16. Michelle and Melissa learned early on to support each other and other women. It started with Chandler School and continued through Catholic Mayfield Senior School. “What was really cool about Mayfield was the focus on the arts,” Melissa said. “We were able to do theater and singing here. That was really exciting.” Michelle added, “We felt it was the most supportive community for our arts, for us to explore our creativity without worrying about if you were liked or popular. Women were valued for who they were, without any judgment of a man. We were lucky to be within a class that was super supportive.” That’s why it was important for Macedo to take a particular approach with “Paradise.” “We wanted to focus on female friendship or friendship in general,” Melissa said. “There are a lot of songs about romantic relationships. We wanted to talk about something else. We wanted to talk about how important relationships are right now.”

Better read this if you are 62 or older and still making mortgage payments. More than 1 million seniors have taken advantage of this “retirement secret.” It’s a well-known fact that for many older Americans, the home is their single biggest asset, often accounting for more than 45% of their total net worth. And with interest rates near all-time lows while home values are still high, this combination creates the perfect dynamic for getting the most

According to new statistics from the mortgage industry, senior homeowners in the U.S. are now sitting on more than 7.7 trillion dollars* of unused home equity. Not only are people living longer than ever before, but there is also greater uncertainty in the ecomony. With home prices back up again, ignoring this “hidden wealth” may prove to be short sighted when looking for the best long-term outcome. All things considered, it’s not surprising that more than a million homeowners have already used a government-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) loan to turn their home equity into extra cash for retirement. It’s a fact: no monthly mortgage
effective way for homeowners 62 and older to get the extra cash they need to enjoy retirement. Although today’s HECM loans have been improved to provide even greater financial protection for homeowners, there are still many misconceptions. For example, a lot of people mistakenly believe the home must be paid off in full in order to qualify for a HECM loan, which is not the case. In fact, one key advantage of a HECM is that the proceeds will first be used to pay off any existing liens on the property, which frees up cash flow, a huge blessing for seniors living on a fixed income. Unfortunately, many senior homeowners who might be better off with a HECM loan don’t even bother to get more information because of rumors they’ve heard. In fact, a recent survey by American Advisors Group (AAG), the nation’s
number one HECM lender, found that over 98% of their clients are satisfied with their loans. While these special loans are not for everyone, they can be a real lifesaver for senior homeowners especially in times like these. The cash from a HECM loan can be used for almost any purpose. Other common uses include making home improvements, paying off medical bills or helping other family members. Some people simply need the extra cash for everyday expenses while others are now using it as a safety net for financial emergencies.

Although these costs may be substantial, AAG does not establish an escrow account for these payments. However, a set-aside account can be set up for taxes and insurance, and in some cases may be required. Not all interest on a reverse mortgage is tax-deductible and to the extent that it is, such deduction is not available until the loan is partially or fully repaid. AAG charges an origination fee, mortgage insurance premium (where required by HUD), closing costs and servicing fees, rolled into the balance of the loan. AAG charges interest on the balance, which grows over time. When the last borrower or eligible non-borrowing spouse dies, sells the home, permanently moves out, or fails to comply with the loan terms, the loan becomes due and payable (and the property may become subject to foreclosure). When this happens, some or all of the equity in the property no longer belongs to the borrowers, who may need to sell the home or otherwise repay the loan balance. Mike Posner to climb Mount Everest in honor of his dad By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor
Mike Posner grew up in a mostly Black community in suburban Detroit. That inspired him to donate money to the Detroit Justice Center.
M
ike Posner has spent the last 11 years climbing the charts. Now, the Detroit-born singer-songwriter-producer will attempt to summit the tallest mountain on Earth — Mount Everest. But it’s about more than him, just like his six-month walk across the United States in 2019. He’s raising money for the Detroit Justice Center, a nonprofit law firm. “They’re just doing incredible criminal justice reform work in our city,” said Posner, via Zoom from a training site in Colorado in late March. He planned to leave for Nepal on April 2 for his late-May trek. The 33-year-old Grammy nominee — for his song “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” — has been training for a year and a half. He said walking through the Rocky Mountains inspired him to try to conquer Mount Everest. “I walked from the Atlantic Ocean — Asbury Park, New Jersey — to the Pacific Ocean, Venice Beach, California. When I got about two-thirds of the way through, I went up and over the Rocky Mountains. “That’s when I started to dream about Mount Everest in a real way.” He knew it would take a lot of hard work and dedication, but it didn’t scare him away. “But I told myself, ‘Look, I’m doing something really hard right now,’” he recalled about the walk. “The walk gave me the courage to dream about this.” Someone else has inspired Posner as well. Posner chose the Detroit Justice Center to honor his late father, Jon Posner, who was a criminal defense attorney in Detroit for 40 years before dying in 2017. Posner’s fundraising goal is $250,000. “After my dad passed away, I felt stuck under the weight of my own life,” Posner said on his GoFundMe page. “In 2019, I walked across America in order to find out who I was when I wasn’t ‘Mike Posner, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter.’” He added via Zoom, “My dad, rest his soul, passed four years ago. Before he died, he was a criminal defense attorney in Detroit. “I’ve had the opportunity to have Zoom calls with them, and they’re doing work that would make my dad beam with joy. It’s a way for me to raise money and honor my father as well. So, for anyone reading, please donate whatever you can to our GoFundMe page.” Posner, whose latest album is the late-2020 concept piece “Operation: Wake Up,” said he’s not necessarily putting down his music temporarily to tackle Mount Everest. “It’s never fully on hold, and I’m always tinkering and playing and listening,” he said. “Listening is a big part of my artistic journey and discovering new music. “Sometimes it’s old music, but it’s new to me, discovering stuff, and studying it and learning it. It becomes a part of where I go on my journey.” However, “I really have to sit down and do an album. I can’t really be thinking about Mount Everest in the back of my head and do music. Making an album is its own Mount Everest, man.” Posner, who has homes in Colorado and suburban Detroit, is training with Dr. Jon Kedski. “He’s basically in control of my schedule and my life,” Posner said. “He said, ‘We’re going to climb this mountain on this day and this and this and this.’ “I do other stuff in between that. Before this pandemic, it was just the two of us climbing mountains a lot. Then the pandemic hit, and we were still just outside, the two of us climbing mountains a lot. In that way, I was definitely very buffered from the pandemic.” While packing, Posner said he’s looking forward to the spiritual, physical and fundraising climb. “I was born in Detroit, but I grew up in Southfield, Michigan, which is a largely Black city,” said Posner, whose sister is a civil rights attorney in New Orleans. (“She’s way cooler than me.”) “Most of my friends who lived on my street were African American. I saw some of the unfairness and injustices. All of my buddies had at least one horror story with the police before they were 18, just being harassed on varying degrees of severity. “I certainly didn’t have a story like that. I think what drives me is what I’m passionate about.” Just the facts GoFundMe: mikeposner.com or gofundme.com/f/Everest Mike Posner Twitter/Instagram: @mikeposner Detroit Justice Center: @justcitydetroit (Twitter); @detroitjusticecenter (Instagram); on the web at detroitjustice.org

everal times, while reading neuroscientist and Pasadena Opera Creative Director Indre Viskontas’ book “How Music Can Make You Better,” I found myself nodding in agreement or stopping to consider a provocative idea. Her contention that “music isn’t music until our minds make it so” was one that caught my attention. “The point I’m trying to make is not that you need to know that particular piece of music, but that you need to recognize that the sound you’re hearing is music, almost before your brain decides that it’s music,” she elaborated during a recent phone interview. “If you say the same sentence over and over and over again, eventually it sounds as though you’re singing it. That is because of something that happens in your brain. When you’re first listening to speech, you’re kind of just parsing it for meaning of the words … Indre Viskontas says the pandemic but if it continues to be repeated, you made us realize the importance of start to hear things like the cadence live music. and the rhythm and the melody of what’s being said, and it becomes music.” The value of context is a recurring theme in Viskontas’ book, which was published by Chronicle in 2019. She cited the different reception we give to birds singing in a park, where they can be interpreted as background noise, and bird songs played in a concert hall. “The sound stimulus, the actual sound wave hitting your ears, is the same,” she explained. “What’s different is that your brain is now finding different layers of meaning in what it has labeled as music.” So for those of us who open our windows to the music of nature, it’s music because we choose to identify it as such? Yes. “Music is this whole other way of interpreting sound,” Viskontas said. Over time, we have evolved to perceive music as both storytelling and a search for meaning. In the book, she references John Cage’s infamous 1952 composition “4’33” — 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence, or rather the random shuffles and snuffles we wouldn’t normally hear. “The music is in the sounds that the listeners hear while the players are not playing. John Cage considered it his most important work,” she writes. “That piece really makes it clear that context — what is happening in addition to the actual music — is part of the music,” she said over the phone. “And you can’t separate the two.” The nexus of music, creativity and science fascinates Viskontas as both chamber musician and professor. She’s given a TED talk on the subject (https://bit.ly/3mkGQVd) and has written or co-written numerous articles, including the recent white paper “Music for Every Child” (https:// bit.ly/3cRqLU9). On April 12, she’ll discuss her book during an online event for Caltech. In its later pages, she calls music a “powerful social glue,” suggesting it “binds people together … by harnessing empathy.” In conversation, she mentions the “synchrony” that occurs at chamber and rock concerts alike, where the music causes “group stillness” or synchronized jumping or dancing. It’s what forges the connections whose absence we’ve mourned this past year, and what’s missing from livestreams. “I think we’re going to see a huge pent-up demand for live music once it seems safe,” she said. “Before the pandemic, we didn’t always realize just how important those moments were. When they got completely wiped out, that’s when people began to feel, ‘Wow, something fundamental is missing.’”

MERRY CLAYTON, “Beautiful Scars” (Motown Gospel/Capitol): HHHH
The legendary background vocalist (Rolling Stones, Ray Charles) rallies from a 2014 accident that left her wheelchairbound with this gospel-soul celebration. Reteamed with longtime friend Lou Adler, who co-produced with gospel artist Terry Young, Clayton reaches into her past with a spirit-lifting reprise of Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” which is elevated by late husband Curtis Army’s saxophone solo from Clayton’s original 1971 recording of the song. With stirring choral support, it serves as a biographical introduction (“I’ve been so many places in my life and time”) before Clayton robustly embraces Sam Cooke’s “Touch the Hem of His Garment.” Other highlights include “Love Is a Mighty River” (contributed by Young and Coldplay’s Chris Martin) and Clayton’s joyful inhabitation of the Diane Warren-composed title track: “These are beautiful scars/ I’m grateful for each one of them/ I’m who I am because of them.” merryclayton.com
CRISTINA VANE, “Nowhere Sounds Lovely” (Blue Tip): HHH½
The former Angeleno, who moved to Nashville to immerse herself in its pool of roots musicians, deftly weaves together pre–WWII-style country-blues and old-time folk with rock throughout her satisfying full-length debut. The arrangements and Vane’s silk-and-smoke vocal tones are more polished than her earlier EPs, and an intuitive backing combo and producer Cactus Moser help drive standout tracks such as “Badlands,” “Satisfied Soul” and the Appalachian-style “Prayer for the Blind” without crowding her richly evocative slide guitar and banjo playing or the compelling stories she tells. cristinavane.com
DAMON LOCKS — BLACK MONUMENT ENSEMBLE, “Now” (International Anthem): HHH
Another musically and intellectually stimulating release from the Chicago multimedia artist and his inventive ensemble. Like their worthy 2019 release “Where Future Unfolds,” this six-track EP creates a sonic mosaic of jazz instrumentation, electronic samples, natural sounds, choral harmonies and spoken word while exploring relevant sociopolitical themes. Its brevity blunts its impact, but while there’s nothing as magnetic as “The Colors That You Bring” (from “Future”), cornetist Ben LaMar Gay, clarinetist Angel Bat Dawid, drummer Dana Hall and Arif Smith’s rubbery percussion lines paint vivid pictures with sound during “Keep Your Mind Free” and 10 1/2-minute jam “The Body Is Electric.” intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/now
THE STREETWALKIN’ CHEETAHS, “One More Drink” (Dead Beat): HHH
If you’re craving a ticket back to the ’90s glory days of testosterone-driven rock, these LA veterans will be happy to punch it for you. Harmony-tattooed opener “Ain’t It Summer” and the new wave nod “We Are the Ones (We’ve Been Waiting For)” take wing with big hooks, while “Bad Vacation” wouldn’t have been out of place in a Brat Pack flick (and wrapping it with a saxophone solo is a nice touch, courtesy of Geoff Yeaton, a welcome band addition). Adolescents guitarist Rikk Agnew and Dramarama frontman John Easdale are among the guesting pals making this a lively toast to escapism. thestreetwalkincheetahs.bandcamp.com

Sandra Cruze and Sarah Hunter star in the new original web series “We’re Not Dead Yet.”
Senior actresses take on stereotypes in new show By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor
S
andra Cruze and Sarah Hunter were tired of being cast as grandmothers with cancer or Alzheimer’s patients with “one foot in the grave.” “We want to show an audience that being older, and particularly an older woman, can be fun — especially with an open mind,” Cruze says. They address this through their original web series “We’re Not Dead Yet,” which debuted on March 17. Episodes one through three are available on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, the website twoheadsarebetterproductions.com and TikTok. The episodes are released at 5 p.m. Wednesdays. “Our parents didn’t tell us what to expect when we were older,” Cruze says. “We thought we could write (stuff) better than that. We started writing these little episodes about two women doing whatever the hell they wanted.”
The episodes are less than 10 minutes, with Cruze playing “Dita” and Hunter starring as “Lilly.” The duo write and edit the scripts together. Next season “We’re Not Dead Yet” will give a little more backstory and will have a serious slant to it. “We really want to build on the idea that older women have something to say,” says Hunter, a 50-year retired teacher. “It’s never too late, and it’s real life — even in the midst of the saddest thing in the world.” Cruze and Hunter, both writer/actors, met almost 30 years ago at Ellouise, Cruze’s hair salon in Pasadena. They realized salons had the perfect atmosphere for their creative ideas, like poetry readings, music events and original plays. In summer of 1999 they launched Hunter’s original play, “Got Estrogen,” and “Unplugged and Off the Hook” with Cruze starring. In 2009, they began producing weekly poetry and music with local talent featuring Cruze’s pals from her reggae singing days in Al’s Bar in Downtown Los Angeles, as well as Hunter’s huge cache of friends. They attracted a coterie of fellow actors, musicians and writers and started producing plays of famous playwrights as well as their own, including Cruze’s original play/musical “Moonshine Mamas” and Hunter’s “Daughter of Earth” — a tribute to the late Agnes Smedley. The two have a shared history. They were in recovery, but “we’re still crazy.” “We’re different in many, many ways,” Cruze says. “There’s always a push and a pull with us, and people think it’s funny. My husband always says, ‘Are you guys rehearsing or are you really in a fight?’” Hunter recently performed in her award-winning solo show, “Dogs are Better than People.” The 70-minute show covers her bad relationships with men, her alcoholism and her sobriety, as told by her five dogs. “When you retire from a half century of teaching, many people simply retire,” she says. “I kicked off a whole new career here with Sandy. We’re very serious about it. We’re closers. We’re finishers.” Hunter began creating characters and dramas in her neighborhood backyard at the age of eight in West Lafayette, Indiana. From graduate school to her time in Los Angeles, Hunter has remained a dedicated student of classical and modern theater. Her interest in American history prompted her to write “Daughter of Earth,” Agnes Smedley’s harrowing story. She has dubbed Japanese cartoons, done voice-over work, had her original plays produced in Los Angeles and Pasadena, published a short story, adapted children’s stories for the theater, and adapted Sandra Cisneros’ “House on Mango Street” for student production. Working with Cruze has allowed her to continue writing and acting. Cruze says writing saved her life. From jotting down ideas on napkins, business cards or her computer she has gone on to write “Groundless,” a onehour TV series with Rey Deegan-Sandrey Productions, about two professional women who step over the line of the law. Cruze enjoys collaborating. She worked with Dave Brown and Rey Deegan on the musical “Moonshine Mamas.” It is now being worked into a TV limited series, “Moonshiner’s Fate.” She has produced numerous 10-minute plays, making one into a short film, “The Physics of Killing.” The brains behind Two Heads are Better Productions, Cruze and Hunter acknowledge the comparison to “Grace and Frankie,” which stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. “We’re a little more relatable,” Hunter says. “We’re not kazillionaires living on the beach. We’re normal people with normal situations. “We worry about problems without having to worry about money. We don’t live in an $8 million house on the beach. We have to finance every single thing we do. This isn’t a ‘cheap hobby.’” Hunter says she wishes Americans had the same thoughts as those overseas about older women. “Older women, grandmothers, they’re at the top of the food chain,” Hunter says. “Here, we have commercials joking about she sheds burning down, or mom living in the shed in the backyard, or a woman being locked in a closet with the Depends overnight, or with bed pans. “Neither one of us are stupid. Let’s say our series — God, please—a studio calls us in. We already know these young, 30-year-olds will look at us and say, ‘You’re both aware that you’re not going to be in it.’ We’d say of course. These actresses who have names and carry SAG cards would. We have no illusions about being stars of our own series.” They just want to see the show succeed. “We’re Not Dead Yet” twoheadsarebetterproductions.com YouTube.com sandreyproductions.com

You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-477-7869, or visit this internet Web site www.stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 85230. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code.
