“W

e watched my mother’s funeral two weeks ago, while we were not allowed too near her grave. Two days later, my sister passed away. Now, I am in the ICU section of Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran, and my father is on the other bed. It seems that these are the last hours of our lives, but the most painful part of the story is that I have been the cause of all our family members, being infected with the coronavirus.” This quote is part of a video posted on social media by a young Iranian; a video that has been shared thousands of times and watched hundreds of thousands of times. These days, the release of similar videos has become a common occurrence in Iran, the third nation to be victimized by the spread of the coronavirus, after China and Italy. In addition to tackling this major disaster, they must face bigger problems to survive. “Until three years ago, my family, friends and relatives in Iran ordered me to bring them the latest technological devices like laptops, iPods and iPads. Now it’s been months since orders have turned into basic things like medicine.” This is what Zahra, an Iranian student at UCLA, says. She is referring to the direct impact of the economic sanctions on ordinary people in Iran. The sanctions, which have been activated since the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal, have pushed Iran’s economy and trade to the brink of collapse. The United States emphasizes that these sanctions do not include food and medicine, but evidence shows that most countries prefer to avoid the risk of doing any dealings with Iran. Before the arrival of COVID-19 in Qom, a holy city near the capital, Tehran, Iran was facing a severe shortage of medicine and sanitation supplies. COVID-19 has now pushed this historic country from the emergency phase to the crisis stage. Now, in addition to stopping international trade, local small businesses have also stopped, and on the eve of Nowruz, the Persian New Year, silence and cold replaced excitement and warmth. Iranians are travelers and socializing people. Some unofficial statistics show that more than 7 million Iranians live in other countries. The same sources estimate the number of Iranians who are residents of the United States is more than 1 million. They do business in the US, studying and trying to contribute to the development of their new home. Iranians are much like Chinese, Koreans and Italian immigrants who are living throughout California and other states and have constant contact with their families, friends and relatives in their countries of origin. In other words, the world is no longer a set of high walls between nations, and the suffering of every part of the world — pain caused by such things as forced migration, global warming and the clean water crisis — has a direct impact on other countries. Based on a broad interpretation of sociology, one can upgrade their home for safety by installing cameras and a fence, but you can only be secure when your house is on a safe street in a safe neighborhood in a safe city. In other words, concepts like security are meaningful when they are collective. This is one of the foundations of security. Health is similar to security in that it consists of both individual and collective efforts. “Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.” This is a familiar warning. We see it when looking into the rearview mirrors of our vehicles. Now, with the emergence of a world crisis such as coronavirus, it seems we must again heed this warning. The bitter and painful experiences of Wuhan, Qom, and Lombardi reminds us that the deadly impacts of COVID-19, as depicted by the media, are now much closer than they appear. n Journalist and TV host Meisam Zamanabadi is a graduate student in media psychology at UC Santa Barbara who holds a master’s degree in media management from the University of Tehran. A PEOPLE’S BAILOUT

We’re facing an unprecedented health and economic crisis, but if we pull together, we can come out stronger on the other side. Right now, Congress is working on an economic relief package to address the impact of COVID-19. But too many politicians are putting the desires of wealthy corpoUSICAL rations ahead of the needs of SAMURAI everyday people. As a high school student who has been fighting for a just transition to a green economy throughout the past year, I know firsthand that we need a People’s Bailout that meets all of our needs, no exceptions, starting with the most vulnerable members of our community. I am calling on Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, as well as US Reps. Judy Chu and Adam Schiff, to ensure any bailout package includes providing financial assistance to those who most need it: workers. We cannot afford — as a planet, as people — to bail out shareholders and corporate executives again. We can’t let our response to this existential crisis fuel the fires of another crisis (namely, the climate crisis). Stimulus packages should include conditions for industries to implement high-road labor standards, workforce development, and reductions in climate emissions and toxic pollution to help us combat a crisis that can become infinitely times worse than our current health crisis. 03.26.20 | PASADENAWEEKLY.COM | GREATER PASADENA’S FREE NEWS AND ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

AS JFK MIGHT HAVE SAID

Following is a portion of a speech delivered on the floor of the House of Representatives by US Rep. Adam Schiff in support of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act: “My fellow citizens, let no one doubt that this is a difficult and dangerous effort on which we have set out. No one can foresee precisely what course it will take or what costs or casualties will be incurred. Many months of sacrifice and self-discipline lie ahead — months in which both our patience, and our will, will be tested, months in which many threats and denunciations will keep us aware of our dangers.” These were the words of John F. Kennedy during the Cu-

ban Missile Crisis. They are equally true today. We cannot see what course this virus will take, not precisely. Many months of sacrifice and selfdiscipline will lie ahead for the American people. We will be tested. And we will prevail. America will rise to meet this challenge or any other. Our health care workers already are. In this bill we give them the tools to do the job. And we give families the financial support they need to get by, until this time of trial and tribulation is over. Let us support this bill, and help put our people and our country on the road to recovery. ~US REP. ADAM SCHIFF 28th CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

worker dissed it because that worker was convinced it was just a way to lock someone up as a 5150 (a danger to self and others). Sad. I also spoke to Parking Director Jon Hamblen who told me his overnight parking enforcement people, When they find someone sleeping in their car, they do not cite them but notifies the HOPE team to offer assistance. HELP ALL AMERICANS EXCELLENT PROGRAM

I finally have time to comment about the Pasadena Police Department HOPE program. I am responsible for almost 300 rental apartments in Pasadena. Several years ago, a resident contacted me about a homeless trespasser sleeping in the resident’s assigned parking. I suggested the resident call the police. A PD car drove by and didn’t stop. After getting this call I reached out to then Police Chief Phil Sanchez. A HOPE car was sent on the call and unfortunately the trespasser was gone. The next day, Lt. Mark Goodman contacted me and at a later date came to a meeting of some of our residents. The program is excellent, although a social

Dear Mr. President, I urge you not to withhold either federal government medical aid or economic aid from states whose governors you don’t like. Not only is that against the law and the Constitution, killing people just because you don’t like their state’s chief executive, it is extremely detrimental to your presidency and to your campaign. The lives of all people are precious, even those of people who don’t support or agree with you. That’s just a moral reality. You are responsible for ALL of our lives, even those of us whom you don’t like. That’s a constitutional and legal fact. Now, please help ALL Americans. Thank you. ~PHILIP ALAN LEFCOURT PASADENA

CHRISTIANNA ROGERS AND FRIENDS MAKE AND DONATE PROTECTIVE MASKS TO NURSES AND FIRST RESPONDERS BATTLING COVID-19 STORY BY MATT RODRIGUEZ | PHOTOS BY LUIS CHAVEZ

S

he just thought it was the right thing to do. “I know how to sew and not a lot of people do, and they need masks very badly,” says Christianna Rogers. “It feels like factory work, but it’s important… It’s a lot of work for a couple of weeks until we can get some relief and get some real medical supplies. It’s worth it.” Rogers, a former costume designer turned real estate agent, converted the kitchen of her modest Sierra Madre home into a mask-making assembly line where she works close to nine hours a day making masks. She started making masks around the time the shelter-in-place order was enacted. The idea was sown into her mind after seeing a few Facebook posts asking for homemade masks. “I had played with the idea [and thought] maybe I should make some [masks]. I know how to sew,” says Rogers. Cramped into her kitchen, with her fabrics and elastics set atop her dining table in one corner, an ironing board pressed against her fridge, and the sewing machine that she’s owned since she was 16 in the corner with multicolored spools of string above, Rogers is able to make around 35 masks a day. The most she’s made in one day was 42 masks. At the time, she was working on an order of 500 masks for the Riverside Police Department, 200 of which were due a few days later. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shifts it’s tone on the use of masks in public, many hospitals and health care professionals still lack adequate personal protection equipment, with many nurses and doctors forced to use a single mask a day. Coming together All across America, communities are banding together to provide masks to hospitals that are in desperate need of supplies. Rogers is part of a group of volunteers in Sierra Madre and Monrovia making and delivering masks to help the local health care workers and first responders. “Our first responders should not have to worry about this at this time — this is a gift,” says Laura Tartaglione, a retired police officer. “It’s a gift from the community — a thank you from the community. We want to keep them healthy.” While Rogers sews the masks together, Tartaglione handles the distribution of the masks, packing them into her GMC Denali and delivering them to local hospitals. Tartaglione whose daughter is an emergency room nurse and son is a 4 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.09.20

firefighter paramedic felt responsible to help the many other frontline workers like her children. “This is near and dear to my heart,” says Tartaglione. “I was passionate about it when I started the program. I didn’t realize I was going to get so many people interested and so many people offering help and donations.” Since many of the fabric stores in the United States have been deemed nonessential and have been closed during the shelter-in-place orders, Tartaglione has received an outpouring of help from others donating fabric needed to make these masks. She was also able to procure 100 percent breathable cotton from a vendor in South Carolina for well under the market price at 40 cents a yard. According to Rogers, a yard of cotton typically goes for $5 at a wholesale price and upwards of $10 at retail price. “It’s just a community coming together — this is what Americans do,” says Tartaglione. “We’ll do it as long as we can, but we are running out of material.” As the demand for masks rises with the recent CDC guideline urging people to wear masks, many sellers have increased their prices as supplies run short. “There are people that are selling masks to nurses for $9 a pop,” says Rogers. “On Etsy,” she said of the website focused on selling handmade or vintage items and craft supplies,” you can buy them for up to $20 apiece. We absolutely would never do that. We’re donating [the masks] to them. They’ve already got enough on their plate working all day.” Tartaglione echoes the same sentiments, even turning away people offering to buy masks. “I don’t charge a penny for anything,” says Tartaglione. “It’s a community effort we’re shooting down people who are wanting to buy them because that’s not what we’re doing. This is a project for our frontline people, so they can continue to be productive and save lives.” The masks that the group sews and delivers are comparable to the surgical masks. While the homemade masks are made out of cotton and the surgical masks are made of polypropylene, they are both meant to filter and protect. Originally, many hospitals denied the masks delivered by Tartaglione. However, recently, as supplies dwindled, she has received requests from staff at the hospital for more homemade masks. While the two have lost track of how many masks they have made and delivered in the last two weeks, they estimate they have made and delivered hundreds of masks.

PREPARING FOR THE WORST A UNITED CITY COUNCIL DESIGNATES PASADENA CENTER AN AUXILIARY HOSPITAL, VOTES TO HELP SHELTER THE HOMELESS, AND PUTS UNDERGROUND UTILITY SURTAX TO USE SUPPORTING RESIDENTS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES BY KEVIN UHRICH

n three separate unanimous votes, the Pasadena City Council on Monday agreed to temporarily turn Pasadena Center into an auxiliary hospital able to treat up to 250 victims of the COVID-19 pandemic, use state funds to help get more people experiencing homelessness into protective shelters, and suspend collection of underground utility surtaxes and issue millions of dollars in rebates in an effort to pump new economic life into the city. In a related development Monday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Department of Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services unveiled a $500,000 fund to help area businesses. City News Service reported that $10,000 grants will be doled out to 150 businesses on a first-come, firs-served basis. “The coronavirus pandemic has impacted residents and businesses throughout Los Angeles County,”the local wire service quotes Supervisor Kathryn Barger, whose district includes unincorporated Altadena. “It is vitally important that we pursue every resource available to support local business and help maintain good job opportunities throughout the region.” In order to qualify for a grant, businesses must: be a for-profit corporation, partnership, or nonprofit with a for-profit activity in Los Angeles County; have between two and 50 full-time employees; have less than $2 million in gross receipts or annual revenue; have been established on or before Dec. 4; be able to produce tax returns; and demonstrate significant economic hardship as a result of COVID-19. Businesses that have demonstrated evidence of a loss of revenue of at least 20 percent will have met this burden. Businesses can use the money to: pay mortgages, rent or utilities; cover working capital costs; pay for inventory; bridge funding to other lenders, such as Small Business Administration Payroll Protection; and pay down other debt incurred before the covered period. The grants may not be used to pay outstanding taxes, legal judgments, employee payroll or benefits, or for lobbying. At its meeting Monday afternoon, the Pasadena City Council approved plans to transform Pasadena Center into a 250-bed auxiliary hospital, a process which is likely to occur within a matter of days. This did not sit well with one resident who wrote of his concerns about safety. Saying the South Marengo Avenue side of the facility will be used for bringing in equipment and patients, as well as taking out people who have died, “We do not feel it can be safe,” the resident wrote in a letter to the council. However, two other residents of the area said they agreed with the decision, City Clerk Mark Jomsky said during the meeting, with council members meeting for a second week via video and only staff members actually attending the afternoon session at City Hall. The initial cost of establishing the temporary medical facility is $250,000 for the first month and $180,000 for each month thereafter. “Based on current projections it is anticipated that the facility may needed for 60 to 90 days, with the total cost

I

ranging between $430,000 and $610,000,” states a staff report on the project. The council agreed with a staff request to approve a contract with Redrock Entertainment Services, which specializes in providing such services for concerts, festivals and other large events, “not to exceed $700,000 to allow for up to 90 days of operation and/or any adjustment to service levels such as an increase in beds,” according to the report. Medical staff and equipment, as well as liability, would be covered by Huntington Hospital, according to Huntington President and CEO Lori J. Morgan. Although city officials looked at long-shuttered St. Luke Hospital in East Pasadena and a number of local school sites, the Pasadena Center, according to the report, was chosen because it has 97,000 square feet of flexible space that can be configured as needed, a subterranean loading dock, full food service and is located approximately one mile from the hospital. On the homeless front, last month Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 89, which was approved unanimously by the Legislature and authorized a total appropriation of up to $1 billion to provide assistance to California counties, Continuum of Care (CoCs) communities, and the state’s 13 largest cities to help fight the spread of COVID-19 among people experiencing homelessness. Newsom allocated $100 million in emergency funding from SB 89 to local governments to help reduce the spread of the virus by safely getting individuals into shelters and providing immediate housing options. The city, which is a continuum of care community, was awarded $105,625 for emergency homelessness funding. And in a move that staff called “the responsible thing to do” while not impacting the city’s general fund, the council voted to suspend $2 million in utility fees for six months and approved $11.4 million in rebates from the city’s underground utility surtax for more than 67,000 Pasadena Water and Power Department business and residential customers. Pasadena Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Paul Little, in an email to the council, called the move “a step in the right direction,” but wrote “absent meaningful financial support from the city of Pasadena, many of the local small businesses you are assisting with this modest financial contribution will not be able to reopen once the COVID-19 crisis passes.” As explained in the city staff report, the amount of money in the surtax fund has “greatly exceeded the amount necessary to complete identified projects.” So, the report states, “Rather than hold these funds and continue to collect the surtax, given the unprecedented financial challenges facing many of the city’s electric rate-payers whether they be individuals or businesses, staff is proposing to suspend collection of the sSurtax for a period of six months and to rebate to existing and qualifying former electric customers, amounts collected over the past 24 months.” n

‘It’s OK to be tired’ With the deadline for the new masks quickly approaching, Rogers stays up late working on these masks, sometimes working for 12 hours straight. Even with her experience of sewing since she was 10 years old, Rogers admits that it’s difficult work for only one person. To help with her upcoming order of 500 masks for Riverside police, Rogers enlisted the help of her boyfriend Greg Rifkin. “I didn’t realize how much freaking work it is, it’s so much work,” Rifkin says as he irons more fabric on Rogers pink ironing board. “I wouldn’t be able to get these done by Monday if he wasn’t helping me,” Rogers says as she takes her turn ironing. “I was having a lovely quarantine until you employed me,” Rifkin jokingly replies. “I’m exhausted after two days. She’s been doing this for three weeks.” The two continued to joke around before getting back to work. To help push through the monotony of ironing and sewing hundreds of

masks, Rogers listens to music through her red JBL BlueTooth speaker. Recently, the music has shifted to more heavy metal music with Metallica as she gave the honor of music choice to Rifkin. “The Beatles dominates this place,” Rogers says. “But since he was helping, I let him play Metallica. I usually just put it on and let it run. My favorite is ‘Octopus’s Garden.’” Even with the help of Rifkin and the music playing in the background, the work still gets tiring. However, Rogers keeps persevering through hoping to make a difference. “You get tired making hundreds of these, but it’s really important,” says Rogers as she continues to iron dozens of more masks. “It’s a lot of work for a couple of weeks and it’s going to make a difference. It’s OK to be tired right now. Everybody at the hospital is tired right now, the nurses are tired right now. I think it’s OK for some of us to be tired right now too, don’t you think?” n 04.09.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

TAKING NO CHANCES AMERICANS DISAGREE ON HOW RISKY THE CORONAVIRUS IS, BUT MOST ARE CHANGING THEIR BEHAVIOR ANYWAY

BY WÄNDI BRUINE DE BRUIN, ANYA SAMEK AND DANIEL BENNETT

6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.09.20

A

s the coronavirus began to spread in the United States, people faced an unknown risk and evolving health recommendations. Policy measures to curb the coronavirus epidemic have turned the world upside down, and the true impact of this global pandemic is yet to be seen. Researchers are still learning more about the virus every day, but how do members of the general public perceive the risks associated with COVID-19? Do these beliefs affect what people have been doing to protect themselves? As social scientists, we’re interested in understanding how people’s beliefs and behaviors evolved in the face of this novel threat. We launched a survey through the University of Southern California’s Understanding America Study to find out. Running from March 10 through March 16, the survey covered a period of time when the information available to the public and the situation on the ground were both rapidly changing. We were able to see how people’s perceptions of risk and their actions were changing from day to day. As this crisis continues, it is important to understand what people think about the risks and how they are behaving. If, for example, people are seeing low risks and not implementing recommended actions, then public health communications may need to address that. Do people think they’ll get COVID-19? Theories of health behavior suggest that people who think that a risk is higher are more likely to implement protective behaviors. Because SARS-CoV-2 is a new virus, the risks are still not fully understood by experts, much less the general public. Perhaps as a result, most of our survey respondents initially believed that their chance of getting the coronavirus was relatively low. But over the course of our weeklong survey, reported coronavirus cases in the US rose from 937 to 4,226. Additionally, halfway through our survey, the government imposed multiple travel bans, barring most travelers from Europe. As people in the US learned of these events, their perceived risk of getting the coronavirus increased. To measure this, we asked people what they thought their chances were for getting the coronavirus over the next three months.

The median belief on March 10, at the beginning of our survey, was 10 percent — meaning half of those surveyed thought their chances were less than 10 percent and half thought their chances were greater. When we closed out the survey on March 16, the median prediction had gone up to 15 percent. The increase suggests that people were updating their beliefs as the virus started to spread across the United States day by day. They were perhaps starting to realize that they may be more vulnerable than they’d initially thought. When we dug deeper into our survey data, we found that not everyone was convinced that they would be getting infected with the coronavirus. The distribution was skewed to the left, with its peak at the low end of the scale. Across all of our respondents, nearly a quarter thought they had a zero or near-zero chance of getting coronavirus in the next three months. Yet, a not-insignificant number of people thought they had a very high chance of getting it. Perhaps that explains why some people were still out partying over the weekend of March 14-15 while others stayed home and committed to social distancing. Time will tell which of these risk perceptions is correct. However, it may be overly positive to think that the chances will be zero. Psychologists have suggested that people have a tendency to underestimate their personal risks of experiencing negative events to help cope with an uncertain and scary world. This idea that “it can’t happen to me” is called unrealistic optimism and could explain the large number of people who think they face almost no risk getting the coronavirus. This group worried us. Because risk perceptions tend to inform behaviors, people who see low risks of getting sick may not feel the need to follow recommended health behaviors like hand-washing and social distancing. Unexpectedly, this is not what we found. What are people doing? In our survey, we asked people whether they had engaged in behaviors to keep safe

from the coronavirus, like hand-washing, canceling travel or social distancing. And to our surprise, most people said that they had already started doing these things – even if they saw relatively low chances of getting sick. By the end of the week, on March 16, nearly 89 percent of respondents said they were practicing social distancing, 32 percent higher than on the first day of the survey. So why this seeming contradiction between belief and behavior? We think one reason could be that people felt safer as a result of implementing those actions. Doing something may have given them a feeling of control and a sense of security. Another reason for stepping up protective actions could be that people wanted to respond to the messages to “flatten the curve” and to protect others — especially those who are older or have underlying health conditions. Even in regular flu seasons, some people may be motivated to take protective actions to help others. Such altruistic motives may make people feel good about themselves, while also supporting the optimistic view that they themselves were not at risk. Engaging in those actions together with others in the community may also have further contributed to this positive outlook. Our survey captured an interesting time of rapid change during the early days of this pandemic. It showed that there is large variation in how likely people think they are to get the coronavirus. But we also found that the vast majority of people are stepping up their protective actions — even among those that didn’t expect to get sick themselves. These findings suggest that people seem to be responding to calls to change their behavior, no matter how vulnerable — or invulnerable — they think they are. n Wändi Bruine de Bruin is the Provost Professor of Public Policy, Psychology, and Behavioral Science, University of Southern California. he sky is gray. It’s Thursday and I’m at the shuttered back entrance of Vroman’s picking up my hard copy of PW, as usual. I’m wearing cheap vinyl work gloves that I found at CVS. They’re white with lime green palms and fingers and look ridiculous. From the parking lot, a woman is audibly sobbing. She’s behind the wheel of her car with the window cracked open. I approach her and ask if she’s OK? Does she need help? She sees me, stops crying, seems to smile (it’s gotta be the gloves) shakes her head and waves me away. I turn back to my car and in a breath, I hear her sobbing again. What’s left of my hale good humor and waspy sunny-side-of-the-street optimism evaporate. This is the keening of grief and it lofts over the spare, once ever bustling parking lot like the sad echo of its own lost time.

Now I really need coffee. When I say “need” it’s not just the immediate reflex to soothe my existential malaise with a comforting hot beverage. It’s a need like clothing or shelter. I drink coffee all day long. (Black. Room? I said Black.) “Tall drip” pretty much sums me up. Lattes? Pour-overs? Cold brew? I said Black. I’m standing in front of Rosebud Coffee on East Colorado, just west of Sierra Madre Boulevard. The front door is open but blocked with the eponymous pushcart that launched the business and now serves as the order and take-out counter for the expansive and once buzzing café. My erstwhile colleague and esteemed predecessor in these pages — Erica Wayne — covered the opening of Rosebud Coffee in November 2017. I had taken particular note at the time because Rosebud Coffee

is a nonprofit cafe that trains and employs disadvantaged and homeless youth. It also just might point the way to the future… I’m on the sidewalk chatting with the manager and now lone staff member Jackie Seah from behind the counter. The café typically deploys a rotating paid staff of nine employees, all of whom have now been furloughed, including Chef Josh who prepared the short list of sandwiches, salads, and wraps. The menu is now limited to all of the espresso machine, pour-over, cold brew exoticism that one expects from a sophisticated, top-tier coffee bar including a selection of house-made syrups. The daily menu includes a list of particularly exotic specials that are concocted and calibrated by Seah himself. This week the special theme is The Beatles with five drinks named after each of the Fab Four, plus Yoko. Seah explains that the café’s business has been down by nearly 65 percent since the current lock down ensued. The business has been sustained by a stream of loyal regulars, many of whom would spend all day working in the roomy, sunlit space. He also explains that they are under a new sublease with Wild Parrot Brewing, whose plans to install a working local craft brewery there have been indefinitely stalled. (More info, visit wildparrotbrewing.com) Oh, and there’s a craft chocolatier working on-site as well. I notice the display of bars on the counter, as Haris Car approaches with a sample of his unusual 60 percent cacao milk chocolate made with fair trade beans sourced from Tanzania. His Car & Sons label launched this year out of the café and offers four different bars, with three dark varieties in addition to the milk, made with beans sourced from small independent growers in Peru, Madagascar and the Dominican Republic. (carandsons.com) On Haris’ sage suggestion, I order a Paul McCartney — a latte involving Lychee syrup ($4.95) and a 70 percent cacao dark chocolate bar from Peru ($10). Welcome to lunch in the apocalypse at Rosebud! The founder of Rosebud Coffee is Dan Davidson, who is also the Lead Pastor of Rose City Church on East Del Mar Boulevard (rosecitychurch.org). When he started the church in 2011, he became aware of a group of homeless teens in the

neighborhood. Looking for a way to activate the church’s social justice mission and ministry, he began a barista training program for “Transitional Aged Youth” (TAY) from the pushcart dubbed Rosebud that now serves as the café’s take-out counter. Teaming with local nonprofit partners, who provided candidates and helped subsidize their compensation, the program began to grow. “I had interns from Fuller (Seminary) interested in the intersection between faith and work… In the initial round of training, 75 percent finished the program and of that segment 90 percent were employed… We were having great success.” Davidson is speaking by phone from his father’s almond farm in the Central Valley, south of Fresno, where he is weathering the current storm with his wife Samantha — a first grade teacher at Garfield Elementary in Alhambra and associate pastor at Rose City — and their three children, ages 4,6, and 8. By 2016, the program was outgrowing the coffee cart and Davidson started writing a business plan for the café. “We needed to find new economic streams beyond tithes and donations… I went to the Small Business Development Center at PCC. I wrote a business plan. I took it to the church. It took me about a year to get it seeded. We have a social justice ministry that now pays for itself.” We talk about the current crisis for bars and restaurants and the possibility of reshaping the economy through social enterprise. “Food is easy entry. it’s one of the best ways to do that… it’s social.” He also notes the positive economic effect on local businesses, when the café opened on the formerly sleepy block, just west of Sierra Madre. It seems Dan Davidson and the community at Rosebud Coffee provide a viable and sustainable model for the uncertain conditions that will persist for bars and restaurants as we all move forward together into the unknown. I’m back at the cart’s counter with Jackie Seah, as I pay for my steaming Paul McCartney and my Car & Sons chocolate bar. “We’re trying to be here for the community,” Seah says. “They need coffee. We want to provide it. Some of our regulars were here from when we open to when we close… That’s why we’re here.” Community, cooperation, social enterprise. The way of the future. I thank Jackie and walk back to my car. The sky is still gray but I’m beginning to see the light.

LONGTIME PASADENA RESIDENT BILL BRUMMEL’S DOCUMENTARY EXPLORES THE HEALING POSSIBILITIES OF COMMUNAL SINGING BY BLISS BOWEN

10 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.09.20

A testament to the physical and spiritual benefits of communal singing and social connection, the film affirms Williams’ “eclectic sense” of music: “It comes from the soul … that’s what people really hear.” Unexpectedly humorous interviews with relatives provide uplift, as do a support group session and concert interludes. In other scenes, choir members speak frankly about adjusting to life with a stoma, the hole in the neck through which they breathe, and how the choir helped them recover their courage. “The concept is something new; it’s almost a defiance,” Andrew Beaumont says. “Which is what people need — is to be defiant.” Brummel, an avid fan of singer-songwriters such as Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, John Prine, and Leonard Cohen, likens the sound of laryngectomees’ voices to the gravelly timbre of Cohen or Tom Waits. “Invariably,” he notes, “the crowds attending Shout at Cancer concerts salute the performers with standing ovations, a recognition of [their] refusal to be defeated by the very real obstacles they face daily.” A film screening initially scheduled for late March at USC was postponed by the coronavirus pandemic; Brummel says it will be rescheduled once conditions are safe enough to do so. For now, he is researching international and streaming distribution options, and entering film festivals. Brummel frames his personal experience as a laryngectomee as a portal of insight into the life struggles of others. That fits with the theme of resilience pulsing through “Can You Hear My Voice?” Despite the challenges and scary adjustments, it is possible to live a “fulfilling and productive life without a voicebox,” he asserts; the quality of his life now is “more resonant” than it was before his surgery. “I hope this film helps people get to the point where they value what we have to say, no matter how slow we speak or how hard it is to understand us. That’s true not only of people who’ve had laryngectomy; it’s probably true of disabled folks in general,” he observes. “I no longer hate this mechanical-sounding voice. I view this disability as a battle scar, an invisible and audible sign of where I can go and what I was able to overcome. “My struggle is different from somebody else, but even if it’s not visible, I’ll walk down the street and point to somebody and you can bet that that person has a struggle — physical, emotional, psychological — that they’re dealing with. The insight I’ve gained is that I’m much more attuned, and much more respectful, and have much more empathy for the struggles of everyone.” n To learn more about “Can You Hear My Voice?” visit facebook.com/CanYouHearMyVoice1. ivil rights and social justice have been an abiding theme in the work of longtime Pasadena resident Bill Brummel, a Peabody- and International Documentary Award-winning and Emmy-nominated filmmaker whose subjects have included blood diamonds, genocide in Rwanda and Auschwitz, and the Ku Klux Klan. His newest documentary, “Can You Hear My Voice?,” follows a choir’s preparations for a sold-out concert at London’s historic Tabernacle Theatre. The Shout at Cancer choir is not just any singing group; all its members are laryngectomees who require a voice prosthesis. “Can You Hear My Voice?” is the first film made by Brummel, a 23-year tonsil cancer survivor, since his own laryngectomy in 2016, the result of long-term damage from radiation treatment. The human voice is a uniquely intimate muscle, one that facilitates our daily communications and significantly defines us as we interact with the world. As choir member Sara Bowden-Evans confides during a particularly vulnerable moment in the film, “I thought I’d never be me again because they would have taken part of my personality, which was me, my voice. Then when I came around [from surgery], I couldn’t call for help, and that was so frightening.” Post-laryngectomy, profound ancillary changes impact swallowing, eating, and the ability to laugh. Daily routines must be adjusted to allow 15 minutes or so to clean the stoma and voice prosthesis. Internalized anger, grief and self-doubt often lead to serious depression. Losing the voice is like an amputation that is invisible to others — until it is necessary to speak. Our voice is part of our identity, and that inevitably complicates recovery. “It’s a treacherous process to try and gain that back,” Brummel observes, “and it doesn’t happen overnight.” His own physical recovery required him to not speak for three months, partly because of radiation damage. “It was just dreadful not being able to say a word and during that time my son graduated from USC … I could write a card, but I couldn’t give a speech or tell him how proud I was of him.” His “holistic” recovery process included stretching and deep breathing exercises, support group meetings, changing to a healthier diet, and a daily walking regimen that eventually led to daily four- and five-mile hikes. “Slowly,” he says, “I began to regain some confidence and realized my life was not over. It was just changed.” About a year later, his physician, Dr. Uttam Sinha at Keck Medicine of USC Caruso Department of Otolaryngology, encouraged him to “make a documentary about the psycho-social aspects of recovering from a laryngectomy,” Brummel recalls. “I thought that was actually a good idea, but it was a topic, not a story. So I went in search of a story. I went home and got on the computer.” Within an hour, he discovered the nonprofit Shout at Cancer choir in London, which helps laryngectomees with breath control, vocal pitch and strength — and thus their self-image. “We’re very limited in what we can do vocally,” Brummel says. “But there’s a window of range where laryngectomees can, with practice, improve our pitch and range. I think that’s one of the genius aspects of Dr. Thomas Moors, the founder of Shout at Cancer, was to use these singing techniques to help us improve our speaking voice.” Making the film became part of Brummel’s own process of healing. Onscreen, laryngectomees are empathetically coached by opera singer LaVerne Williams, and accompanied by a Belgian saxophone quartet and the Peter Edwards Jazz trio as they practice and arrange the Louis Armstrong standard “What a Wonderful World,” Nina Simone’s medley of “Ain’t Got No/I Got Life,” and Tears for Fears’ “Shout.” The choir members’ lack of previous performance experience heightens the impact of the amiable Pug Halliday’s nostalgic poem “Epiphany,” and Bowden-Evans’ delivery of “Can You Hear My Silence?,” which shares her darkest fears and lessons over Edwards’ graceful piano melody. Following a particularly arduous recovery, she sounds like a three-pack-a-day smoker; other laryngectomees sound wheezy or robotically processed.

ELIZA GILKYSON, 2020 (Red House): HHHH

In case the title’s too subtle, the Pasadena-raised, Austin-based singer-songwriter positions herself in protest folk tradition with covers of Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie (adapting the latter’s 1952 letter excoriating landlord Fred Trump’s racist policies into the deceptively sweet “Beach Haven”). But it’s Gilkyson’s unifying anthems “We Are Not Alone” (composed with Robert McPeek) and “Promises to Keep” that achieve transcendence. “There is comfort in our voices/ Reminding us of all that we hold dear/ We are not alone,” she vows over Mike Hardwick’s fiery guitar and a swelling choir. #NoSin2BPoor PI JACOBS CROWD-SOURCES PHONE VIDEOS AND PHOTOS FROM FANS AND FRIENDS FOR NEW VIDEO SHARING DANCE MOVES, COVID STORIES AND HOPE

N

ecessity is the mother of invention, among other things, and local artists are putting that maxim into action. La Tuna Canyon resident Pi Jacobs had planned to be on the road this month, promoting her new album “Two Truths and a Lie.” Instead she’s minding Safer at Home strictures at home with her husband. So she’s inviting fans, friends and listeners to contribute to a crowd-sourced DIY video for her ebullient single “No Sin to Be Poor” with a phone video or photo of them dancing to the song, which will be edited into a final video. Jacobs is also requesting personal Covid stories, for either the video or another creative project. “Everything that gets submitted, we’re going to use in one way or another,” she says. “This song is all about suffering and community and relying on other people, which is a lot of what’s going on right now. I said we need to get other people involved in this, and make it a project about how this quarantine is affecting you, how are you doing. The song is recognizing something difficult, but it’s also a really joyful kind of a song.” With its invocations of a hard-working waitress juggling “three jobs and a couple of babies” and “takin’ no guff from some kid livin’ up on a trust” before “dancin’ in the dollar store,” “No Sin to Be Poor” is a good-natured take on the rent-paying grind. Jacobs built the song around a character named Mary, but wrote it partly from childhood experience as the daughter of a single mom in Northern California.

“We were on different kinds of public assistance at different times,” she recalls. “What I was remembering when I wrote the song was standing in a line with my mom, waiting for food commodities, and having people walk by and sneer at us and say really horrible things. … The good news is that she’s a total American success story. She’s the first person in our family to go to college; she became an educator; she taught third grade and bilingual reading for 40 years and retired. So she’s an example of how someone might need a little help, but if they get that help, that person can go on to become a great contributor to our society.” All submissions are welcome — especially those showing someone demonstrating their “moves” with abandon. (One laugh-inspiring video received shows a man dancing barefoot with his dog in the snow.) Participants are asked to share videos or photos to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #NoSin2BPoor (or tag them on Facebook with @ NoSin2BPoor) by Monday, April 13. Per Jacobs, the hashtag direct-feeds to the website her husband designed for the project, nosin2bpoor.com. Their plan is to “create a little hub” of connection and community where people can see how others are coping. “The thing about ‘No Sin to Be Poor’ is these people are defiant — they’re dancing in the dollar store. They’re like, ‘You can’t put me down.’ I just wanted to do something positive. It felt like this was a good way to do it.” n

Stephen Bruner’s loss-informed fourth Thundercat album arrives as society’s fumbling toward acceptance of massive uncertainty. Thus funk confections “Black Qualls” (featuring Slave drummer Steve Arrington and Childish Gambino) and “How Sway” translate as bass-popping prescriptions for relief from grief and isolation, and the silky R&B crooning of “Dragonball Durag” impresses more as trippy, balm-like dream than romance. Everything feels surreal (notably “Interstellar Love,” achieving liftoff via Kamasi Washington’s sax solo). The guitar-centered title track (“So many things I wanna say”) allows space for genuine emotion Bruner mostly evades; more such focus is needed. thundercat.bandcamp.com/ album/it-is-what-it-is

JAMES ELKINGTON, Ever-Roving Eye (Paradise of Bachelors): HHH½

If you’re a Bert Jansch/Richard Thompson fan, bend an ear Elkington’s way. Long based in Chicago, the veteran British guitarist expands beyond the fingerpicking of 2017’s “Wintres Woma” for his second foray as frontman; standouts “Nowhere Time,” “Sleeping Me Awake,” and the psychedelic title track benefit from bassist Nick Macri and drummer Spencer Tweedy’s rhythmic drive and guest string and woodwind players. Elkington’s guitar notes sparkle in clean arrangements, and he compensates for his limited baritone by doing more with less vocally. His guitar’s the thing; its expressive tones feel pensive and timely. jameselkington.com

WILL SEXTON, Don’t Walk With the Darkness (Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum): HHH

Veteran sideman for the likes of Roky Erickson, Doug Sahm and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Texas guitarist swapped Austin dust for Memphis grease, a geographic shift musically reflected in his material and backing players. Venerated New Orleans roots-rockers the Iguanas comfortably navigate Sexton’s country-R&B-gospel mix, given luster by harmonies from Memphis soul queen Susan Marshall and the Barnes Brothers. The music ingratiates with earthy, heartfelt familiarity; imagine a road-seasoned bar band invoking ’60s blues- and psych-rock with the title track, or dancing cheek-to-cheek as “Witness” and the horn- and steel-gilded “Fell in Straight View” spiral up from a jukebox. biglegalmessrecords.com
