Re: “Trash Attack,” March 28 We know plastic pollution is an environmental hazard. A recent change in international policies around recycling has elevated the issue, causing garbage to pile up in our communities. From this front page story in Pasadena Weekly: “... the recycling industry nationwide is struggling, in large part due to China and other Asian nations, which have set stringent guidelines for accepting used paper and plastic from markets and municipalities in the United States. These new rules have forced towns and cities across the country to either shutter recycling programs or place limits on the types of materials they receive. In many cases, the programs that have survived now face steep price increases.” California needs a clear pathway for reducing plastic pollution. We need to pass Assembly Bill 1080: https://a80.asmdc.org/…/lorenagonzalez-leads-effort-combat… ~ ASSEMBLY MEMBER LORENA GONZALEZ 80TH ASSEMBLY DISTRICT SAN DIEGO

MAJOR CHANGE NEEDED Your recent cover story (“Trash Attack: Garbage Piles Up as the Recycling Market Breaks Down,” March 28) highlights the need for major changes to our waste recycling and disposal practices. Now that sending recyclable materials like plastic to China is no longer an option for most communities, we must deal with our waste by first reducing what we produce and use, and by recycling the rest. California state legislators have proposed a set of laws, Assembly Bill 1080 and Senate Bill 54, to require that 75 percent of single-use packaging and products be reduced, recycled or composted by 2030. These bills also encourage California manufacturing to reuse recycled materials.

It’s already widely accepted by Californians that we need to protect our coast from plastic pollution to safeguard both public and environmental health. However, inland communities like Pasadena also need significant policy changes, like those in SB 54 and AB 1080, to help reduce the burden of plastic and other single-use items. All communities, both coastal and inland, need this legislation; otherwise our residents will continue to pay ever-increasing costs for garbage clean up and waste disposal, and trash will continue to plague our neighborhoods and our environment. ~ EMILY PARKER COASTAL AND MARINE SCIENTIST HEAL THE BAY

INNOVATE, NOT DEVASTATE It adds further insult to ecological injury that Roundup (glyphosate) defoliant has been, and might continue to be used, by Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Works (DPW) within Hahamongna Watershed Park’s devastated basin. The park’s name includes the word “Watershed” for a reason... It indicates that the entire basin functions as a watershed to slow the rare outflows of

freshwater from the Upper Arroyo Seco and recapture that water into an important aquifer used by surrounding communities. The black willow and other riparian trees, shrubs and wildflowers that once graced the park’s living basin — a popular pastoral destination for hikers, dog walkers and horse riders — has been bulldozed out of existence along with its resident wildlife, from butterflies to burrowing owls; from ducks to bobcats. The area will be further excavated and apparently “treated” to prevent life from returning. Spraying Roundup or Roundup “cocktails” (that contain multiple toxic defoliants), will expose remaining adjacent vegetation, visitors, and wildlife to the hazards of these chemicals... while potentially contaminating surface water when it does flow through our arid region. Shame on the county DPW for its expedited, unnecessary destruction of over 50 acres of HWP’s living basin, along with its intention to perpetuate that devastation by poisoning the parkland’s heart into the future. As plans stand, the DPW will succeed in turning a once biodiverse habitat where endangered species, such as Least Bell’s Vireo, had returned to nest, into a barren, blighted county maintenance yard into the foreseeable future. I again urge the Board of Supervisors to stop this travesty and restore the basin to its natural state. Mother Nature has been involved in “quality control” and “product development” a few million years longer than the DPW. It is time to let nature recapture clean freshwater and revegetate Hahamongna Watershed Park. Seek alternatives to the DPW’s plans outside that insular, arrogant agency; redesign the park after the beautiful bioswales and naturalized flood control basins one can see in other countries, such as France. Implement innovation, not devastation and defoliant applications. ~ LORI L. PAUL VIA EMAIL

CAPTAIN OBVIOUS

A

EVERYONE KNOWS WHEN YOU TEXT, DRIVE, ENDANGER OTHERS AND BREAK THE LAW

t night, it’s not the faint glow of the phone screen that betrays you. It’s the same thing that gives you away during the day… the loss of lane control, variable speed reductions and increases, and failure to behave appropriately at signalized intersections. It’s the head-bobbing as you look up for a second then down in your lap for up to 23 seconds, then back up for one second, continuing this deadly dance for what feels like forever as others look on in horror. I also stare at you in incredulity and utter disdain. But you … you don’t even notice that people all around you are disgusted by your selfish driving while texting and obvious disregard for their personal safety. I recently had the extreme displeasure of sharing the road with literally dozens of you at the same time. I survived the experience, but that fact should not be considered an endorsement of your asinine and highly dangerous driving habits. I had this “Captain Obvious” experience as I drove from Oakland to San Diego. The reason I was in the Bay Area was for my great nephew’s 16th birthday. Zachary Michael Cruz was not at his own birthday party, but it was very important that I be there to support his father at this milestone event. Zachary was killed in a Berkeley crosswalk by a distracted driver just over 10 years ago. Three days after his dad’s birthday, and two-weeks before his own sixth birthday. Since Zachary’s death, more than 45,000 pedestrians have died on American roadways. As if that is not a sobering enough statistic, according to Safer America, worldwide “nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, or on average 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20 to 50 million are injured or disabled.” In the US, “every day, about nine people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes involving a distracted driver.” That figure is based on people who admit to driving distracted, so I suspect this statistic is somewhat understated. So, with these verifiable facts, I am generally dumbfounded when everywhere I look, I see dumb people driving cars with their eyes glued to a “smartphone” screen. The irony is crushing! A 2016 Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) study, (“Driver Crash Risk Factors and Prevalence Evaluation Using Naturalistic Driving Data”) estimates that 36 percent of crashes could be avoided if distraction was not present. Cell phone use leads to visual-manual distraction, requiring drivers to take their eyes off the road, and cognitive distraction, requiring drivers to focus their attention on tasks not related to driving. These tasks include dialing, talking, texting, reaching for the phone and browsing. I’m not even talking about the people who use hands-free or onboard devices to communicate while driving. Asking Siri to text your mom, or give you directions to the nearest gas station is one thing. In fact, VTTI studies have found that in some circumstances talking on hands-free devices while driving can actually keep drivers more alert and help avoid drowsy-driver accidents. But taking selfies from the driver’s seat or using a handholding a phone to flag me into the lane in front of you is another thing entirely. Both of these things actually happened during my recent California road trip. I was never able to make eye contact with the selfie driver, because she never pulled her head out of her own ass long enough to look around at her surroundings. The twentysomething phone-flagger did look up and saw me. I stared at her in disbelief and mouthed “Put that effi ng thing down!” clearly referring to her cell phone, on which she had been texting madly mere seconds before using it to let me know it was “safe” for me to pull in front of her. She shook her head at me and continued texting as she passed. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, texting drivers make me really angry. If it were only their own lives they were putting at risk I’d say, “Let Darwin do his thing.” But they put the lives of everyone around them at risk — and for what? When you are driving, there is absolutely nothing more important for you to do than pay attention to the task of driving. When you are text-driving, you are breaking the law. You are NOT good at it, and you are beyond obvious. If you are lucky enough to not kill yourself or someone else, and if you decide to pull your head out of your behind and look around, you might notice people in your general vicinity looking at you like you are a self-absorbed, uncaring and unfeeling jerk. And you know what, Captain Obvious? They’d be right!

JUDGE DISMISSES SOME CLAIMS IN BALLEW LAWSUIT AGAINST CITY BUT ALLOWS RACIAL PROFILING ALLEGATION TO GO TO TRIAL BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN

federal judge refused to dismiss a claim of racial profiling against the city of Pasadena in a lawsuit stemming from the violent arrest of an Altadena motorist in late 2017. Christopher Ballew, who is African American, is suing the city of Pasadena and the Police Department for excessive force, false arrest, falsification of reports, delay or denial of medical care and excessive bail in relation to the incident. A former John Muir High School basketball standout, Ballew, 23, was arrested at a gas station in Altadena on Nov. 9, 2017 by officers Zachary Lujan and Lerry Esparza for allegedly resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer after being stopped for driving without a front license plate and excessive window tint on his late-model Mercedes sedan. In the course of the altercation, Ballew was struck on the

head several times with fists and on the legs with a metal baton. His head was also rammed into the asphalt. He suffered a broken leg bone and multiple contusions during the arrest, a portion of which was captured by a passerby on a cell phone and later posted to Facebook. After the incident had become public, Pasadena City Manager Steve Mermell released footage captured by the body cameras worn by the officers. Ballew was released on $50,000 bail. However, the LA County District Attorney’s Office later declined to charge Ballew with any crimes. “Regardless of whether the stop was lawful, if the plaintiff can show that they were subjected to unequal treatment based upon their race or ethnicity during the course of an otherwise legal

Local residents weighed in Monday with differing ideas on how best to use the historic but long-vacant former YWCA building located in the city’s Civic Center. Housing advocates called on the city to use the building — designed by Julian Morgan, California’s first licensed female architect, in 1921 and constructed in 1923 — for affordable and homeless housing, but several preservationists were against that plan. “I’m not thrilled with the idea that the YWCA would be used as homeless housing,” said local activist Jonathon Edewards. “It’s the Civic Center. It’s City Hall. I personally think this historic building in the Civic Center is not the right choice for homeless housing.” City Clerk Mark Jomsky received nearly a dozen letters in support of using the building for housing homeless women. The city spent $8 million to purchase the building through eminent domain in 2010. Since then, plans included turning the structure into a boutique hotel, but that idea fell through in 2017. “The mixed use of social enterprise and housing for women who are homeless is the perfect solution for the Pasadena YWCA,” wrote Jackie Knowles, founding program director of the Women’s Room, which serves San Gabriel Valley women who are alone and homeless, or at risk of being homeless. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property has also been designated as a historic monument by city officials. The building has been vacant since 1997. Two consultants told the City Council on Monday that it will cost more to rehabilitate the structure than projected revenues from several reuse options will support. Consultants from OLIN Partnership and Kosmont Companies were hired by the city to examine preservation, design plans and evaluate possible reuses of the property, respectively. Consultants with Kosmont concluded that reuse as a hotel is possible, but it would rely on aggressive revenue projections and offsite parking. Consultants also studied using the building to house city offices, but that would cost 20 to 50 percent more than current leasing costs per square foot and would cost the city about $23 million, assuming all off-site city offices were relocated to the building. Using the building for affordable housing would require $20 to $35 million in public funds. — André Coleman

DOCUMENTARY ON JOHN MUIR HIGH PREMIERES APRIL 26

GIVE AND TAKE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7

BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN

The award-winning documentary “Can We All Get Along? The Segregation of John Muir High School” will premiere at 7:30 p.m. on April 26 at the high school, 1905 Lincoln Ave., Pasadena. Pablo Miralles The film, which won top honors at both the Accolades Global Film Competition in San Diego and the Best Shorts Competition in La Jolla, traces the history of the school, from integration through desegregation and back to a segregated present. “It’s important for me that the film premieres at John Muir High School, because it was completely supported by the community,” said producer and director Pablo Miralles. Miralles attended John Muir from 1979 to 1982. More than six years in the making, Miralles questions what has happened to his once diverse alma mater and whether or not to send his own son to the school in the 50-minute film. Miralles also explores the history of Pasadena’s schools, including the 1970 federal court order that created the first desegregation plan west of the Mississippi. The film weaves stories from alumni, administrators and civic leaders about the school’s multicultural heritage. Miralles also illustrates the challenges and failures of California and the federal government in promoting well-funded and diverse public education. Things started coming to a head in 1963 when La Cañada Flintridge opened its own high school after African-American families began moving into Northwest Pasadena and sending their children to John Muir High. At the time, more than 800 white children were pulled out of the PUSD and placed in La Cañada High School. The district attempted to stop the white flight by building Blair High School for white families still living in Pasadena who didn’t want their kids going to Muir, which by that time was 60 percent black. Soon, Blair and Pasadena high schools were overcrowded by white children whose families did not want to send them to the “minority school.” In 1970, US District Judge Manuel Real sided with families suing the Pasadena Unified School District, who claimed the district was maintaining a racially segregated school system. Real found that the district was guilty of committing “intentional segregative acts,” and ordered busing to balance the racial makeup of each school. For more information, visit getalongfilm.com. PASADENA MAYOR TORNEK SAYS HE WILL SEEK A SECOND TERM; NAJARIAN MOVES INTO MAYOR’S SEAT IN GLENDALE BY ANDRÉ COLEMAN

Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek recently announced he has filed a candidate intention statement indicating he will seek Terry Tornek re-election in 2020. “During my term as mayor I have achieved many of the goals that I set in my 2015 campaign, but there is much more to do.” Tornek said in a prepared statement. Tornek in the November election led the campaigns for Measures I, which increased the city’s sales tax three-quarters of a cent, and Measure J, which allowed the city to share up to one-third of the revenue raised by Measure I with the Pasadena Unified School District. During Tornek’s term in office the city also increased the minimum wage, which will reach $15 on July 1, 2020, and supported plans by State Sen. Anthony Portantino, D-Pasadena, and Assemblyman Chris Holden, D-Pasadena, that put an end to the 710 Freeway extension. In his statement, Tornek said there is still work to be done. “We need to build on these successes; continue to maintain fiscal discipline, reduce the homeless population, implement the projects in the Arroyo Seco and plan for the recapture of the land in the 710 ditch. Also, having obtained a $105 million commitment to grade-separate the Gold Line at California Boulevard, we must continue to make improvements to our traffic circulation.” As he did during his first campaign, Tornek plans to walk every neighborhood in Pasadena, personally connecting with residents to listen to their concerns. “I have begun the process of speaking to residents all across the city about the things they value about Pasadena,” Tornek said. “I will always place the quality of life in our neighborhoods first.” Tornek was first elected to the City Council in 2009, and re-elected in 2013. He was elected Mayor in April, 2015 when he beat former District 1 Councilman Jacque Robinson in a runoff election. He is the city’s second elected mayor. Serious issues could loom in a second term, including laws forcing the city to build at the same rate as the state and increasing housing costs that have forced some to call for rent control. Last year, movements in Pasadena and nearby Glendale failed. In Glendale, with a five-person council in which members rotate into the mayor’s seat for one-year terms, Councilman Ara Najarian was selected by his peers to serve as mayor for a fourth time. Najarian, who was first elected in 2005, takes over the position from outgoing Mayor Zareh Sinanyan. n 8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.11.19

traffic stop, that would be sufficient to demonstrate a violation of the Equal Protection Clause,” wrote US District Judge Fernando M. Olguin. As part of the Fourteenth Amendment, the Equal Protection Clause mandates all citizens have the guaranteed right to equal protection under the law. The Fourteenth Amendment, which also grants citizenship to people born in this country or naturalized here, is one of three amendments adopted after the Civil War. The Thirteenth and Fifteenth amendments, respectively, abolished slavery and gave African Americans the right to vote. In his ruling, Olguin also refused to throw out Ballew’s claims of excessive force being used and officers filing falsified reports, a decision which will allow jurors to decide the allegations. The judge threw out Ballew’s delay in medical care claim, but left the door open for it to be reintroduced with more information. In a prepared statement, one of the city’s attorneys said the defense would press on despite the judge’s refusal to dismiss the charges. “We accept the court’s order on our motion to dismiss, which addressed the initial allegations raised by Mr. Ballew. While we disagree with some aspects of the ruling, we will continue to strongly defend the case to protect the public’s taxpayer dollars, as the matter moves forward,” said Justin Sarno, an attorney representing the city and the officers in the litigation. Esparza and Lujan were n Altadena, an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County, when the incident occurred. The Altadena Town Council was so upset by the incident that officials there sent a letter to Mayor Terry Tornek demanding that Lujan and Esparza not be allowed to patrol the area, despite decades of cooperation between the neighboring areas. “I have yet to talk to one person who has seen the video who does not believe there was excessive use of force on the part of the police officers,” Altadena Town Council Chariman Okorie Ezieme told the Pasadena Weekly. The 16-member Town Council, which meets monthly, unanimously voted to send the letter after its January 2018 session. Several local residents also provided input at that meeting. Ballew’s attorney claims the officers were using common vehicle violations to detain, search and catalogue young African-American men as gang members or associates when they stopped Ballew. “This is my neighborhood, this is where I live. I know it. Chris Ballew could be my neighbor. The Ballews are nice middle class people. Chris Ballew is not a thug or a criminal. He is a nice kid,” said civil rights attorney John Burton. According to Burton, Lujan and Esparza were looking for African-American gang members

and stopped Ballew and then became aggressive with him because he is African American and the officers assumed he was in a gang. After police stopped Ballew in the parking lot of a gas station, they made contact with him as he walked toward the cashier. A scuffle ensued after they walked Ballew back to his vehicle and attempted to handcuff him. Lujan repeatedly hurled profanities at the Altadena resident, demanding Ballew give him his “f---ing hands.” Ballew repeatedly requested the officers call their commanding officer. “Shut the f–-k up,” Lujan screamed at Ballew after pushing his face into the parking lot asphalt. Esparza also repeatedly told him to “stop acting like a dummy.” Moments later, Ballew managed to make it to his feet and was struck twice by the baton. Ballew reached for the baton and began struggling with Esparza for the weapon. As a scuffle ensued, Lujan hit Ballew and Esparza drew his service revolver while Ballew was close to his partner. Esparza did not fire and instead holstered the handgun. By then, Ballew had been knocked to the ground by Lujan and had dropped the baton. At that point, Lujan jumped on Ballew’s back and started punching him on the side of his head. After holstering his weapon, Esparza picked up the retractable metal baton and struck Ballew three times in the legs and ankles while his partner slammed Ballew’s head into the asphalt. Ballew suffered facial abrasions and a fractured fibula during the encounter. Robert Fonzi, a former San Bernardino undersheriff hired as a use-of-force expert by the city, concluded that the two Pasadena police officers used reasonable force. Lujan and Esparza are lateral transfer hires from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Bakersfield Police Department, respectively, hired by the city despite repeated problems of “maintaining internal cultures that sanction misconduct, including excessive force, false arrests and frame ups and fabricated police reports, especially directed against African Americans,” according to Burton. “They didn’t need sensitivity training. They needed discipline,” Burton told the Pasadena Weekly. After the incident, the officers remained on duty for more than three months, despite outrage expressed by local community members before then-Police Chief Phillip Sanchez reassigned them to desk duty. Sanchez left the department a week later. “You can’t just assume because somebody is black and driving in Altadena they are a gang member,” Burton said. n

' Dear Sugar’ ‘MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING’S’ NIA VARDALOS STARS IN ‘TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS’ AT THE PASADENA PLAYHOUSE BY BLISS BOWEN

hen life seemed to be disintegrating in every conceivable way and my emotional antenna were fried from loss overload, a friend recommended Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 book “Tiny Beautiful Things,” likening it to a beacon of sanity in maddening darkness. Soon enough, I became attuned to a virtual underground network of readers who’d bonded over the hilarious, heartbreaking “Dear Sugar” advice columns collected in Strayed’s book — about sexless marriages, modern dating etiquette, miscarriages, independence, faith, writing, death, abusive relatives, and much more, advice she’d dished out for the Rumpus website from 2009 through 2012 and expanded with new material in “Tiny Beautiful Things.” That community loomed large in the conscience of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” writeractress Nia Vardalos while adapting Strayed’s work into an ensemble piece for the stage, after director friend Thomas Kail suggested “Tiny Beautiful Things” could be raw material for a play. It was 2013; Vardalos was promoting her book “Instant Mom,” and Kail was still in rehearsals for “Hamilton.” Reading Sugar’s “epistolary exchanges” during a flight from New York to her Los Angeles home, Vardalos says she knew by the time she landed that she needed to adapt it. “Tiny Beautiful Things” the play, co-conceived by Vardalos, Vail and Marshall Heyman, premiered in 2017 at the Public Theater in New York. The Pasadena Playhouse’s production, directed by Sherri Eden Barber from Kail’s original direction, opens this week. Sugar leaps off the page (or computer screen) like a big sister or mentor who knocks you sideways with her compassionate, don’t-bullshit-me wisdom. From the book: “Dear Sugar, I’m getting married in a few months. Why do I feel totally aggressive and angry?” “Dear Aggressive, My guess is you’re the bride and that you feel aggressive and angry because you’re in wedding planning hell and you’re caught up in all the expectations, outdated fairy tales, overpriced products, and irrational beliefs that one adheres to when one believes it possible to flawlessly orchestrate the behaviors, conversations, drinking habits, and attire of a large group of in-laws, out-laws, friends, strangers, and co-workers while simultaneously having a meaningful and intimate exchange with your sweetheart in front of an audience. It is not. Yours, Sugar.” “I was so drawn to it,” Vardalos says. “The material terrifies me; it’s very much outside my comfort zone. Cheryl talks about subjects that are painful. I didn’t necessarily go into that darkness willingly. I just realized I had to be a grownup and try something different, and I’m so happy I did. It changed me, in ALL ways. It made me seek honesty in my friendships, in every aspect of my life.” For Vardalos, the challenge was to preserve the “humanity” of the letter writers and the tart lucidity of Strayed’s prose — the healing laughter as well as the tears — while constructing a narrative arc; she says she kept telling herself to just “woman up and do it” and not be scared of offending the beloved Sugar’s readership. After connecting via Twitter, she and Strayed met in LA after Strayed arrived from Portland to view the first cut of Reese Witherspoon’s film version of her 2012 bestseller “Wild.” “We met, shook hands over tea, hugged, and made a deal. Made a deal!” Vardalos marvels. “And I started writing that day. When I finally met Reese Witherspoon about a year later, after I went to the ‘Wild’ premiere, I said, ‘Thank you so much for treating Cheryl so well, because if you had been a Hollywood asshole, she might not have come to tea with me.’” Vardalos says she not only connected with Strayed as a fellow writer, but also as “a woman, a mom, a person from Minneapolis and I’m from Winnipeg — sister cities. We are very much sympatico. She’s that person who just makes you feel — I call her blonde Oprah.” Strayed jokes that Vardalos told her adapting the book was “the meanest thing she’s ever done because she had to say no to all these columns that she loved. But I get it. I don’t think it would have been a good idea to have the play be just like Sugar’s greatest hits. It’s not an album compilation.” During preproduction and filming of her film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” Vardalos flew back and forth to New York to revise and workshop the play. She “combined, cut, trimmed, added” and conflated passages and themes from approximately 15 “Dear Sugar” letters, “added narrative, wrote within Cheryl’s writing, and arced a story that takes place in one night. Three actors play all the letter writers, so approximately 80 characters.” She also peppered Strayed with questions: “When did you write? Where did you write? Why did CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

‘DEAR SUGAR’

you write? Why did you reveal the sexual abuse in your past? How did that feel?” “I wanted to know if she was writing anonymously because she found it was freeing, and she said no, writing anonymously was never a draw for her. She was trying to see if the words could be read without any subjectification from the reader, without any prior knowledge of who was writing; the words could just be read as a healing balm or salve,” Vardalos recalls. “That was illuminating because I realized, that’s my way into the play.” Having never written or even read many advice columns, “Dear Sugar” was “an experiment of form” for Strayed because she discarded the tradition of columnist as morally superior authority. Instead, she explains, she basically said to readers, “I’m down here with you and I’m going to use story to help illuminate your problems and I’m going to tell stories from my life,” making the column an advice-memoir-personal essay hybrid. “As a reader, books and stories and poems and essays and plays and all those literary forms have saved me, brought me out of a dark time, given me clarity, or hope when I needed it. So I know the power of story,” says Strayed, who wrapped her “Dear Sugars” podcast with Steve Almond in December, along with their “Sweet Spot” column for The New York Times, to work on individual projects (including a memoir Strayed says will be followed by a novel). “I’ve had all the rejection and all the hardships that every writer has, but I’ve also had a lot of wonderful things happen to me over the last seven years, and exciting things like going to the Oscars. But nothing, nothing, nothing compares to this experience I’ve had of meeting, at this point now, hundreds of thousands of people who’ve looked into my eyes and said, ‘Thank you, you changed my life’ [with ‘Tiny Beautiful Things’ and ‘Wild’]. That is the high mark for me when it comes to achievement. That’s what I dreamed of doing as a writer. Sometimes, sadly, people think of the arts as useless — like, ‘Oh, I could be a doctor, saving lives’ — but what I’ve really come to believe is artists are saving lives, we just do it in a different way.” Vardalos says she and Kail were keen to extend that connection with Sugar’s readers: “When the book was published, people shared it; on the Rumpus, a community shared. So our goal, our absolute goal, was to create an experience where people could sit in the dark and go through something together. When the show kept selling out, and people would come back with friends who had not seen it, that’s when I realized that the goal had been achieved.” She says they were additionally excited to realize that all of the letter writer roles were non-gender specific, enabling them to expand the play’s dimensions by casting “disregarding ethnicity, age, sexual orientation,” as Kail did with “Hamilton.’” At least 20 other productions have licensed the play across the United States, with actors of varying ethnicities portraying Sugar, and it’s being translated into Spanish for productions in Mexico and Uruguay. Vardalos is appearing in only the Pasadena Playhouse’s production, so she can stay close to home with her daughter. (Due to scheduling conflicts, she will NOT give matinee performances April 13, 20-21, 27-28, May 4 or 5; Sameerah Luqmaan-Harris will portray Sugar for matinees and May 5’s evening performance.) But Vardalos is savoring the opportunity that “Tiny Beautiful Things” presented for her to “create a role that could go on and on and on,” and to actively address “the dearth of material for women 40 and up.” “In my ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ it was the joy of my life to make 72-year-old Lainie Kazan the lead of the film,” she says with a hearty laugh. “Why not? I am constantly trying to create 1) ensemble pieces, and 2) [roles] for women where we’re not just mothers and maids and prostitutes. We can be all those things, and we’re good at all of it, but let’s be something else.” ■ “Tiny Beautiful Things” runs through May 5 at the Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena; $25. a Reader Recommended pick in both the Best Barbecue and Best Soul Food categories. Whereas both eateries serve entirely different cuisines and styles, there are a few common threads — they both offer not only delicious food but also some of the best values and lowest prices I have encountered within our city limits. Bonnie B’s is a very traditional soul food barbecue joint. It feels like a family that threw one of the best neighborhood cookouts took that idea straight to a storefront. They make their own lemonade and tea, fry up catfish on weekends, and justifiably brag about their ribs. While I was there, I had an opportunity to speak to a few employees about their recommendations in order to get the full experience. Almost as if it was rehearsed or taught in a training manual, they all at separate times shot me a smirk and without hesitation mentioned their “fall-off-the-bone” spare ribs. I took their suggestions, and for $15.99 I got five spare ribs and two-sides. One of the hardest choices I had to make was narrowing down which of the two classic soul-food sides I would try. Slim’s Mac and Cheese was a definite. When there is a dish that has a namesake next to it, you know it is going to be great. Deciding between the potato salad, candied yams, okra and tomato over rice, and baked beans was tough. But in the end, I ended up pairing my ribs with yams. The knowing glances were correct; there is a reason their ribs come so universally recommended. The meat hangs on the bone just enough and are not slathered in sauce to make up for a lack of flavor. They’re smoky, tender and taste like they were made with care. Slim’s mac was flavorful and just the type of homestyle backyard mac and cheese you would want to pair with some classic barbecue. Bonnie B’s is classic Southern barbecue, and they offer far more than just ribs. There’s also smoked chicken (half for $12.99) with two sides, smoked salmon with two sides ($15.99), and two chicken hot links, bread and two sides ($8.75). They also offer a flavorful fried chicken sandwich with homemade sauce. If you crave a Southern classic,

they also have smoked bologna ($7.75). Like Bonnie B’s, there is a lot to love about Mely’s — the traditional Salvadoran desserts, the ensalada de fruta, the breakfast options. But what really makes Mely’s stand out are the pupusas. If you have never had a pupusa, please allow me to be your guide to these beautiful, stuffed, pancake-sized orbs of heaven. Pupusas are a traditional street food in El Salvador, made with a yellow corn flour called masa harina. They are typically stuffed with a variety of meats, beans and cheeses, and usually served with a cabbage slaw known as curtido. Mely’s has 15 varieties of pupusas, and I tried a dozen of them to make it seem as if I had some semblance of self-control. That’s because, well, to be honest, a quinoa/vegetable mix did not seem the most effective use of my limited stomach space. Quick note: nearly all of the pupusas, save one or two, come stuffed with cheese. I mean when you cut into, or bite into one, the cheese comes pouring out. Which, don’t get me wrong, lots of hot, melty cheese is a great thing, but it does make the pocket of goodness a bit rich. So, to counter that richness, you are going to pile on the curtido, cabbage slaw with a vinegar brine to it that brightens each bite. While I absolutely would (and likely will) order every one of the 12 pupusas over again, for the sake of brevity, I will list off the heavy hitters. First up, the carne asada y queso ($3.25) packed the most flavor, as the tender, tasty asada, creamy cheese and masa casing all complemented one another the way a good trio should. On the vegetable side, the spinach, zucchini and cheese ($2.99) can best be compared to an improved take on a vegetable pizza — the wildcard that I did not expect to become one of my favorites. Possibly the most traditional and my honorable mention for “papusa that stole my heart,” the chicharron y frijoles ($2.75) is the perfect embodiment of Central American flavors, and what I imagine is the item that inspired readers to nominate Mely’s in the Best of Pasadena contest. So, on your next trip up North Lake, do yourself a favor and check out these two Best of Pasadena favorites. You’ll be glad you did.

WALLS OF RESISTANCE A THERAPIST MUST CONFRONT DEFENSIVE RESPONSES AGAINST EMOTIONAL INTIMACY

Dear Patti, My teenage son Gavin has been going through a rough emotional time over a relationship breakup and feeling depressed. He requested to start individual psychotherapy sessions about a month ago and this is his first time in any type of counseling. After a few sessions, the psychotherapist made requests of my son, such as asking him to take off his sunglasses, throw away his chewing gum, stop shaking his leg and foot or remove the pillow he’d picked up and placed on his lap. Gavin seems to like and trust this therapist and while I’m sure she has her reasons, could you shed some light on the therapeutic rationale? I’d appreciate it. I don’t want to interfere in any way. I just want to understand — Claudia Dear Claudia, When your son first walked into his therapist’s office, chances are he had a healthy desire to open up and pay attention to his feelings, even if painful or difficult. When patients reach out for professional counseling to help them face and resolve their problems, it’s because they realize that the cost of suppressing and avoiding hidden impulses or disowned emotions is no longer worth the adverse results they’re having — such as mood disorders, anxiety and relationship conflicts. Unfortunately, once a patient is actually in therapy, an unhealthy part of the self that is afraid to be open and is vulnerable, due to emotional trauma from the past, invariably emerges. This harmful aspect of the personality surfaces in two ways: (1) by trying to keep intense feelings pushed down due to a powerful fear of them and (2) by preventing the therapist from becoming too close because of a fear of intimacy. These two walls of resistance — the one between the patient and his feelings and the one between the therapist and patient — trigger defensive maneuvers that the therapist needs to discourage. A major role and responsibility of your son’s therapist is to challenge and push through the emotional barrier between Gavin and his buried emotions and support him to become stronger in his ability to experience feelings. One common way to ward off feelings is to discharge them before they get very strong. Your son’s therapist is confronting the defense of discharge by asking him to remove his chewing gum or by gently asking him to not shake his leg and observe what feeling is trying to come up. It’s also a professional counselor’s job to help patients overcome their fears of intimacy by confronting any emotional walls that obstruct the therapist-patient relationship. Once Gavin is able to tolerate closeness without automatically putting up these barriers, it will become easier for him to go out into the real world and create close relationships. His therapist is confronting defensive responses against emotional intimacy by pointing out that Gavin placed a physical barrier between them (the pillow) and asking her to remove her sunglasses to confront her avoidance of eye contact. A skilled and competent therapist is able to recognize and identify each patient’s particular road map of defensive maneuvers, very different from patient to patient. For example, one person might avoid feelings by clamming up and not talking. When the therapist urges the patient to be more verbal, the patient’s flow of words allows her to get in touch with deep emotions. Another patient might engage in rapid talking and, when coached to slow down and not talk so much, will start to experience emotions she was previously unaware of. A therapist might point out specific defenses by saying, “Do you notice you repeatedly look away when feelings of sadness come up?” or “Can you see how you begin to speak rapidly when discussing how, as a child, you rarely saw your father?” Verbal and nonverbal “cues” can convey a lot to a therapist. Patients, for instance, may use a lot of minimizing words when speaking (i.e., “I’m kind of angry” instead of “I’m angry” or “I guess I’m lonely” instead of “I’m lonely”). Another example of defending intense feelings is by expressing the exact opposite emotion (i.e., laughing or smiling when sad, folding hands calmly and setting them limply in one’s lap when furious). Another defense is constricting and tensing muscles (like tightly crossing arms and legs) when strong feelings arise. In summary, the therapist’s requests are designed to help Gavin face his deepest feelings, establish a comfort level when intimate with another, so as to work together — without barriers — to make his symptoms disappear. n Patti Carmalt-Vener, a faculty member with the Southern California Society for Intensive Short Term Psychotherapy, has been a psychotherapist in private practice for 23 years and has an office in Pasadena. Contact her at (626) 584-8582 or email pcarmalt@aol.com. Visit her website, patticarmalt-vener.com. 14 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.11.19

THE 10TH ANNUAL TCM CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL PAYS TRIBUTE TO CINEMATIC ROMANCE THIS WEEKEND IN HOLLYWOOD BY CARL KOZLOWSKI

T

urner Classic Movies (TCM) has proven to be a phenomenon over the past 25 years, winning the hearts of film buffs everywhere by showing countless classic movies uncut and without airing ads. For the past 10 years, they’ve added to the magic by hosting the TCM Classic Film Festival from the heart of Hollywood, bringing together an eclectic array of films with appearances by legendary actors and filmmakers. The cable network will be celebrating both anniversaries this weekend as the 2019 edition of the festival runs from Thursday through Sunday. With this year’s theme being “Follow Your Heart: Love at the Movies,” romantic dramas and comedies will compose most of the four days of cinematic classics – beginning with an epic screening of 1989’s “When Harry Met Sally,” complete with stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, and director Rob Reiner in attendance on Thursday night. “Love was a theme we hadn’t done yet in our first ten years, and ‘When Harry Met Sally’ is one of the best romantic comedies ever

made,” says Charlie Tabesh, programming director for both the network and the festival. “Other great events include a ‘Nashville’ reunion with Lily Tomlin and Jeff Goldblum as just two of the several cast members in attendance, and we’re also paying tribute to Twentieth Century Fox as it is in essence going away.” Indeed, the focus on Fox comes at a sad moment for film lovers, as Disney just recently gobbled up its competitor in a corporate merger that further solidifies its global dominance and the death of creative options in Hollywood. While numerous Fox classics will be screened, the spotlight will shine brightest on a screening of the “special edition” of “Star Wars: A New Hope” on the TCL Chinese Theatre’s IMAX screen. Other major events include a 30th anniversary screening of “Do the Right Thing” and a 70 mm screening of “The Sound of Music” hosted by the current master of musicals, director Rob Marshall of “Chicago” and “Mary Poppins Returns” fame. A screening of the classic 1941 biopic “Sergeant York” will feature two of the real-life York’s descenCONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Angie Dickinson in Ocean’s 11

LOVE IN THE DARK CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15 dants speaking about him and the film after a screening at a new yet historic venue for the fest: Legion Theatre at Post 43 of the American Legion. And 1960s-era femme fatale Angie Dickinson will appear with screenings of the original Frank Sinatra version of “Ocean’s 11” and noir classic “The Killers.” “This year we’ve added the Post as a new venue, because it’s beautiful and tucked away, with a beautiful theater and a bar,” says Tabesh. “Most people will really love it. Like the channel, the fest has sort of stayed true to its beginnings. It’s not just about the film, or the conversations. It’s almost a convention for classic movie fans to gather. People get to know each other and reconnect each year. If you come from a small town you might be the only classic movie freak and you might feel a little lonely, but if you come to this you meet like minds and people really enjoy that.” One of TCM’s top hosts, Alicia Malone, will be appearing at the festival, joining Tabesh and TCM’s main host, film critic Ben Mankiewicz, at the cinematic confab. A native of Australia, Malone moved to the US eight years ago and quickly made a mark as a film expert on CNN, “Access Hollywood,” E!, “Entertainment Tonight”, MTV, MSNBC and many other outlets before becoming host of the short-lived TCM-owned streaming platform FilmStruck and finally getting hired by TCM a year ago. “I’m real excited because I get to do intros

to two of my all-time favorites – ‘Magnificent Obsession’ and ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,’” says Malone. “’Obsession’ is one of my favorite Douglas Sirk films, and ‘Blondes’ is one of the films I saw aa a kid that led to my love and obsession for classics. Seeing Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe in all their glory led to my exploring and learning more about film.” Ultimately, Malone finds that there’s a truly special mystique in presenting classic Hollywood films right in the heart of Tinseltown itself. And just like Tabesh notes, the wonder of the weekend comes from seeing cinephiles form lasting friendships that foster the filmloving community for future generations to enjoy the hallmarks of moviedom. “The mission is still the same at TCM after all these years: invite new classic film fans in and maintain long-term ones,” says Malone. “We have a great network of kindred spirits who love these films with a passion and love hearing stories. I think it’s so special that on the closing night of the 10th film fest we’re marking the 25th anniversary of the channel. I’m looking forward to the closing night party toasting both achievements. “ n The TCM Classic Film Fest takes place from today through Sunday at various venues in Hollywood. Festival passes range from $250 to $2,149. Individual tickets for screenings are $20, with the closing-night screening of “Gone With The Wind” costing $30. Visit filmfestival.tcm.com/ attend.

This pronounced turn from the rock and soul of last year’s “Between Two Shores” combines electronica, African percussion and Middle Eastern instruments to otherworldly effect — notably during “Fools Game,” with Aida Shahghasemi’s closing vocal enveloping the song like silky balm. The cinematic build of “Good Life of Song” inspires uilleann pipe dreams, while “Brother’s Keeper” and the Celtic-flavored “Mary” recall the melodic folk storytelling of 2015’s “Didn’t He Ramble.” The theatrical orchestration of “Don’t Settle” matches Hansard’s full-throated delivery, but elsewhere the titular wildness emerges not from his trademark yowl but the ambitious, improvisation-birthed music. glenhansard.com

SERIOUS FRETWORK AND CAMARADERIE ANTICIPATED FROM SEAN WATKINS & FRIENDS, MATT THE ELECTRICIAN, AND MOTOR SALES AT YORK MANOR NEXT THURSDAY

S

ean Watkins keeps busy. His Nickel Creek bandmates, fiddle-playing sister Sara Watkins and MacArthur genius award-winning mandolinist Chris Thile, regularly garner attention for their solo projects, but Sean Watkins seems quite content juggling various projects from a support position, even though he has five solo albums and numerous tours to his credit. Add all the fiddle and bluegrass tunes he grew up hearing and playing in San Diego County, and he has a supersized song bag to pull from. It’s been a long, twisty road since Watkins reaped awards with Nickel Creek at a mid-1990s bluegrass festival at Santa Anita Race Track, and longer still since they played their first gig at a pizza parlor in San Diego when Watkins was 12. Part of his appeal is his calm, grounding presence — the kind that comes with the freedom of knowing you can basically do what you want because you’ve

already proved yourself in myriad ensembles for a few generations of audiences. Onstage, the beefy guitarist is a strong, conversationally understated player who gives his strings a workout — check out the scratches on his Gibson LG2 acoustic, a gift from Jackson Browne. (You can drop names like Browne’s in interviews, and not sound like you’re namedropping, when you’ve been performing for three decades and can play their instrument even better than they can.) Road miles and years have deepened Watkins’ voice somewhat, but he still sounds like the boy next door, assuming the boy next door can sound sweet yet earthy, high-lonesome style. Listen to the harmonic construction, instrumental sophistication and above all the engaging melodies of his songs and his youthful bluegrass foundation can still be discerned, although he isn’t constrained by genre distinctions. Guessing what he might share

with the audience at his York Manor show next Thursday is part of the night’s attraction. Nickel Creek chestnuts? A favorite by Works Progress Administration bandmate Glen Phillips? The gospel call “Tribulations” from 2016’s “What to Fear”? Something more pop-leaning from his 2006 release “Blinders On” or his Fiction Family collaborations with Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman? A free-spirited jam on a Bob Dylan classic a la Watkins Family Hour? The range of possibilities is eclectic and broad. n Kensington & the Bluegrass Situation present Sean Watkins & Friends, plus Matt the Electrician and Motor Sales at York Manor, 4908 York Blvd., Highland Park, 7-11:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18; $12 adv/$15 at thedoor. Info: (323) 543-1338. Tickets available at eventbrite.com/e/sean-watkinsfriends-matt-the-electrician-motor-salestickets-59142525887?aff=eblast&mc_ eid=7c15c03dd5&mc_cid=b626eb05a6. Guitarist Ag Kaedy and his Amanar bandmates fled their northern Mali hometown of Kidal when it was overtaken by extremist invaders in 2012; he’s since lived in exile in Bamako. Recorded last year on an eight-track cassette recorder in Portland, Oregon, these 12 solo acoustic tracks have the piercing immediacy of heartbreak, as Ag Kaedy sings (in Tuareg) and plays guitar like a man haunted, bound to hope for what he knows cannot be recovered. There’s political import in songs like the hypnotically subdued title track (“It’s become like the ruins of a civilization”), composed in Tuareg folk tradition, but the beautiful humanity of his message strives for healing. Highlights: “Imetawan,” “Tikaras,” “Azaman.” amanardekidal.bandcamp. com/album/akaline-kidal

LEE FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS, It Rains Love (Big Crown): HHH

Over five decades the veteran singer’s fine-grained rasp and passion for classic soul have remained abiding constants. Love, faith, and hard times are recurrent themes here, and he alludes to forebears (“Can I get a witness over there?”) during the fake news-decrying “Wake Up.” “Love Prisoner” and “A Promise is a Promise” dig into funkier grooves, and Fields testifies like a revival preacher over dirty drums and organ for “God is Real,” but this smooth, smartly charted set mostly sings the praises of honest romance. leefieldsandtheexpressions.com

BIBIO, Ribbons (Warp): HHH

Sixteen tracks of folk prettiness from prolific British multi-instrumentalist/producer Stephen Wilkinson, informed by 1960s-’70s British, Irish and American folk and pop. “Pretty Ribbons and Lovely Flowers,” which gives the album its title, is an odd mash of metallic chirps and disembodied vocals, while “Curls” and “Ode to a Nuthatch” evoke sweet meadows; fingerpicked guitar patterns cascading through “Erdaydidder-Erdiddar” devolve into electronic weirdness. More noteworthy: the bucolic “The Art of Living,” “Patchouli May,” the then-andnow R&B grooves of “Before” and “Old Graffiti.” bibio.co

Monster Mash MONSTERPALOOZA HORROR CONVENTION RETURNS TO PASADENA FOR THE FOURTH TIME BY CARL KOZLOWSKI Halloween may traditionally be the scariest day of the year for Americans, but local horror fans have a second chance to be terrified annually thanks to Monsterpalooza, a convention that fills the Pasadena Convention Center with three days of frightening fun. This weekend marks the fourth time the event has been staged in the Crown City, and by the looks of things, it could be its most impressive edition yet. Founded and overseen by Eliot Brodsky, a New York City-based lifelong fan of all things scary, Monsterpalooza will feature more than 200 vendors spotlighting their skills in monster makeup and character effects, alongside collectible collections from dealers, to an eager crowd of thousands of attendees. Brodsky decided to launch the convention 12 years ago, building on his extensive network of contacts he established as the owner of a movie prop house. In addition to the vendors and creature displays, Brodsky also promises over 70 cult-favorite horror actors and makeup artists signing autographs or doing classes and demonstrations, special previews of upcoming horror films and a memorabilia museum. He keeps it fresh for himself as well as his fans by telling the featured artists to bring personal works that they’ve never displayed before. “A lot of artists like to spread their wings with creations on their own time in 18 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.11.19

their home studios, and they love to show them off here,” Brodsky told the Pasadena Weekly in 2017. “My enjoyment comes from challenging myself each year to show off a whole gamut of things you don’t normally see.” Each day has major events, with Friday kicking off with a 7 to 8 p.m. talk by veteran horror-industry expert Sandy Collora, who will be discussing how horror aficionados can maximize their social media use to create successful careers selling films, art, action figures and games in the genre. Then from 8 to 9 p.m., the “Godz and Monsters” panel features four veteran creature creators discussing their latest works and the key elements used to make them. Saturday spotlights the 2018 smash hit reboot of “Halloween” by bringing in James Jude Courtney, who played the masked killer Michael Myers, as well as its makeup effects designer Christopher Nelson, from 1:15 to 2 p.m. That panel is followed by a talk featuring writer-director Michael Dougherty of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” which is expected to be the year’s most popular creature feature. Saturday night welcomes fans to enjoy the official Monsterpalooza Afterlife Party, featuring legendary effects master Tom Savini as its special guest. There will also be two bars and live music by Monte

Revolta and his Band of the Living Dead, with all the fun starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday might be the most actionpacked day of all, starting with a “40 Years of ‘Alien’” presentation from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. featuring the “untold story” of the origin of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” horror series. The talk will shine a light on how Greek and Egyptian mythologies, underground comics, the art of Francis Bacon and the dark imaginations of screenwriter Dan O’Bannon and creature designer H.R. Giger came together to craft a classic that has spawned nine films and counting. From there, Savini (“Dawn of the Dead,” “Friday the 13th” and “Creepshow”) will have a career-spanning discussion from 1:15 to 2 p.m. Cult favorite actor Bruce Campbell, of “Evil Dead,” “Ash vs. Evil Dead” and “Bubba Ho-Tep” fame, will do a fan Q&A from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, and finally the fun wraps up with “The Movies That Made Me,” featuring cult legend director Joe Dante (“Gremlins”) and “Saw” series cocreator Leigh Whannell. n Monsterpalooza runs from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E. n a cinematic world of seemingly endless sequels, superhero movies and reboots, it may seem like almost nothing emerging from Hollywood is original anymore. But the new movie “Little” is one of the most creatively clueless, utterly bankrupt ideas to come out of Tinseltown yet. Ripping off one of the most beloved childhood comedies of all time, 1988’s Tom Hanks classic “Big,” “Little” follows the story of what happens when a high-powered African-American female executive named Jordan Sanders turns back to her nerdy-looking 14-year-old self (played by Marsai Martin). Rather than becoming big after making a wish, Jordan is forced into waking up as a child after upsetting a child magician, who wishes Jordan would turn young so that she can beat her up. The movie opens with its only funny scene, a flashback to 25 years before, when the younger Jordan has an embarrassing mishap caused by a girl bully at a school talent show. Her parents cheer her up by saying that her brains will ensure she’s a winner as an adult, and Jordan vows quietly that she’ll be a bully to everyone around her. And so it is that we are introduced to adult Jordan, who runs an app creation company with a staff she terrifies with her insane fits of rage. In fact, she’s a shrill witch to everyone around her from the moment she wakes up, particularly to her assistant April (Issa Rae). She’s also engaged in an utterly stupid fling with a boytoy named Trevor (Luke James), who has no apparent purpose to his existence other than coming over to tear his clothes off nightly while dancing and flipping his way through her apartment en route to a booty call. Jordan’s high-strung, anger-fueled life is made more complicated when her top client Connor (Mikey Day) gives her just two days to come up with a new app that will wow him or lose his business entirely — a challenge made infinitely harder when she wakes up at age 14 the next morning. When Jordan’s contentious neighbor sees her younger self entering her apartment, she calls in a DCFS agent (Rachel Dratch) to see what’s going on. April pretends to be Jordan’s mom and is ordered to enroll her in school, taking her back to the middle school she suffered at as a child, while she also takes over the day-to-day operations at the app company with Jordan instructing her via phone calls and texts. In other hands, this might be a funny lark of a movie. But writer-director Tina Gordon Chism — whose prior films “Peeples” and “What Men Want” both earned solid B’s from me — has created an embarrassing train wreck here. Out of all the characters — and there are many — only 20 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.11.19

April comes off like a well-rounded, believable human being, and Issa Rae portrays her with a genuine charm that far surpasses anyone and anything else in the movie. Regina Hall’s screaming fits are totally one-note, but thankfully she disappears for most of the movie after the first half hour, leaving the utterly annoying Martin to take over in full spoiled-brat mode. Everyone else in “Little” is written and performed like utter caricatures, as if amping up their histrionics will somehow make it more, rather than less, enjoyable. Story logic is utterly lacking as well, with what seems like at least five days and nights of events occurring in the film before Connor returns a day early to see the app he’s demanded. That means Connor showed up a day later, yet multiple days of events have clearly happened in the interim. If the filmmakers can’t even get a basic thing like the timeframe of their story to make sense, why should we as viewers not feel utterly insulted and reward them with our money? But beyond the lack of logic, the annoying performances, and the unfunny dialogue and situations, there’s a gross and creepy aspect to part of “Little.” Trevor sneaks into Jordan’s apartment for one of his booty calls while unaware that the 14-year-old version and April are there instead. He obliviously strips down more than usual despite the fact he’d have to be blind not to see that two people he’s not intending to dance for are his audience. When he realizes a child is watching him, he assumes young Jordan is adult Jordan’s secret daughter and he instantly vows to be a “good daddy” and win over older Jordan so they can be a family. He keeps coming back with toys for young Jordan and their hugs — with young Jordan trying to convey romantic feelings to him by accident — creates a creepy, pseudo-pedophilic vibe that’s hard to shake. “Big” was rooted in the universal desire of children to be adults and have their way in life, and had a sympathetic loner of a kid making that leap. “Little” just has an awful person who stays awful as a child, only redeeming herself at the last possible moment for the sake of reaching an ending. You might ask, could this really be so bad? Well, I’ll leave you with this: the large audience I saw this with at a free preview screening on Monday audibly laughed maybe five times in its 109-minute runtime, and literally no one applauded at the end of the screening. That is a first in my 10 years of reviewing over 100 movies a year. You’ve been warned. n

The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust with interest thereon, as provided in said note(s), advances, under the terms of said Deed of Trust, fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $ 832,316.49. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidderís sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorderís office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
