Are these truths or lies? Editor: In 1765 Voltaire warned that “those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.” We already have seen such atrocities given birth by the falsehoods of political misinformation manifested by the acts that led to the Oklahoma City bombing and that encouraged the participants in the Jan. 6 attack on our Capitol. The general public is being inundated with misinformation in general and deliberate malicious disinformation in particular. Yet based on the reaction exhibited by the populace as a whole, people seem unable to discern misinformation for what it is. This unawareness is both dangerous and a fundamental threat to our democracy. As we saw on Jan. 6, thousands of people believed Trump’s Big Lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Blinded by his Big Lie, many of these same people subsequently stormed the nation’s center of democracy. Unless a substantial majority of the populace recognizes misinformation and outright lies when they are presented, absurdities will be perpetuated, people will be perilously misled, and atrocities will be inevitable. Our primary defense against being victimized by misinformation is the exercise of critical thinking by each individual. Don’t accept anything at face value without first thinking it through. In other words, don’t believe everything you hear. When exposed to a complex or controversial subject, always think it through — peel back the onion, so to speak, and look beneath the surface. Even simple things can be surprisingly distorted. And unless people think things through, absurdities will be perpetuated. Too many people appear to be fundamentally inept at distinguishing facts from hoaxes, a condition made even worse by so much misinformation pervading the Internet and social media. Too many of us fall victim to classic propaganda. Classic propaganda appeals directly to the emotions through processes that are intentionally designed to hide the truth and facts. Its objective is to bring about a specific action, typically by methods the propagandist does not want to have carefully scrutinized. The public needs to be enlightened on how to explicitly identify the major tenets of classic propaganda and to recognize how each principle persuades. People are fooled by misinformation because they don’t recognize it. We have all been exposed to these misinformation techniques, and all of us have occasionally fallen for them. But the situation now seems more dire than ever. The seven most common techniques used by the propagandist to intentionally mislead and misinform the public are the following: 1. Name calling is a technique appealing to our hate and fear, designed to cause one to form a judgment without examining the evidence. Bad names are assigned to brands, groups, policies and the like that the propagandist wants us to condemn and reject. The use of bad names with the purposeful omission of their implications is probably the most common of all misinformation techniques. For example, “All Democrats are socialists.” Why is it only Democrats, and what exactly is a “socialist” anyway? 2. Glittering generalities are used when the propagandist wants to appeal to the emotions of love, generosity and brotherhood. Here, the ploy is to identify his program with virtue through the use of virtue words like freedom, honor, patriotism, and the American way. All people who be-

lieve in good believe in these ideals — and hence will accept and approve this cause without examining the evidence. The “patriots” who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 to “Stop the Steal” were rallied to the cause in the name of freedom, justice and “save our nation.” They blindly accepted the Big Lie and committed criminal acts without questioning the motives of the perpetrators. 3. The transfer is a technique where the authority, sanction and prestige of a highly respected and revered institution, organization, or power is carried over to something the propagandist wants accepted. Political cartoons are some of the better examples of transfer. The inverse of this technique is also often applied. If one of the propagandist’s favored positions is seen in a bad light, he will attempt to transfer the “blame” in such a way that this bad light is actually the opponent’s position. For example, the Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol “… were not really Trump supporters. They were Black Lives Matter and Antifa supporters pretending to be Trump supporters!” Even some members of Congress are espousing this lie. 4. The testimonial is essentially an endorsement from some “credible” person, like a celebrity, to induce the populace to accept the misinformation. Negative testimonials are often employed in social, economic, and political issues to bring about their defeat. 5. The plain folks device is where the propagandist wants to appear “just like everyone else” — especially in an election year when a candidate is shown on television sitting on the front porch in some small Kansas town while holding a 4-year old on his lap. One supports these people because they are “just plain folks.” 6. Card stacking is probably the most insidious of all the misinformation techniques, as here deception is deliberately and often maliciously employed. The purpose of card stacking is to evade the truth through offering false testimony, under- or overemphasizing points to evade facts, introducing “red herrings,” letting half-truths pass for truths, making the unreal appear real, and the weak seem superhuman. Sham, hypocrisy, brazenness and outright lies are the tools of card stacking. If one does not have the information access or other means of independent verification, one is at the mercy of the card stacker. The draconian voter suppression under the guise of “assuring election integrity” that we are witnessing is an excellent example of card stacking. The “assuring election integrity” is a malicious red herring. The intended objective of this act of card stacking is to prevent the “wrong” people from voting. 7. The bandwagon technique appeals to the human social instinct to “follow the crowd” and motivates through the emotion of needing to belong. “Everyone is supporting Joe Lackluster for mayor. Why aren’t you?” In today’s world, so much misinformation is diffused among the real facts that truth has become difficult to recognize, a condition that must not continue unrectified. The commitment to the preservation of an informed public is vital to the health and well-being of our nation. Unless the general populace is properly educated in recognizing truth and in identifying malicious misinformation, a democracy can’t survive. — Philip Moynihan

hen Kathy Buckley graduated high school, she could only read at a third-grade level. “I did horrible in school,” Buckley said. “I was too busy trying to figure out what’s going on. … I was very lost at school. (I was) suicidal. I felt like I had no purpose. I was just too much work trying to keep up with everything.” As a child doctors diagnosed Buckley as mentally challenged because she struggled to respond to their instruction. The only issue was that she simply couldn’t hear them — she was deaf. When doctors and educators realized Buckley was deaf, they transferred her to public school. She struggled to learn because of the lack of resources provided to deaf children at the time. “It’s when they put me in public school is when I got lost. I got really lost in public school,” she said. “Teachers would their back to us as she would draw on the blackboard. I couldn’t see her lips.” With her hearing loss, Buckley felt alone and secluded from everyone around her, including her family. “I felt very isolated from my own family,” she said. “I hated the weekend because I had no real connection with my family. “The unfortunate thing about hearing loss is that it’s invisible. It’s an invisible challenge. You can see that somebody’s arms and legs are missing but you can’t see somebody’s hearing is missing.” As Buckley aged, she realized that she wanted to help others get through any challenge in their life. Following a near-death experience, where a Jeep ran her over on a beach in Ohio, Buckley decided to live her life to the fullest and in a spur of the moment became a comedian and now shines the light on the struggles of deafness. “I’m taking my challenges and making them more visible by finding humor in it,” Buckley said. “To find humor in your pain is a fabulous way to move forward in life. Once you laugh at something that hurts you, it can no longer hurt you.” With her newfound talent, Buckley looked for a way to help children struggling with hearing loss. In 1996, she found that opportunity with No Limits for Deaf Children and Families, a nonprofit that educates children with hearing loss. Established by Dr. Michelle Christie, No Limits celebrates its 25th anniversary on April 17. Unique from other after-school programs, No Limits began as an after-school theater program meant to help deaf children further develop their interpersonal skills. Since 1996, the program has produced 180 shows reaching over half a million people. No Limits has since expanded to provide educational services year-round for people all around the globe. In addition to providing services for their children, No Limits provides resources for their families to help them accommodate their child and establish a connection with them. The nonprofit provides all of the services to low-income families for free. Outside of No Limits, the services would cost anywhere from $75 to $100 an hour. “We are so thankful to be able to provide free resources changing deaf children’s lives for the past 25 years,” Christie said. “Our goal with this campaign is to educate and empower about the needs and triumphs of people with hearing loss.” Christie and Buckley work as a tag-team duo. With a doctorate in education and years of teaching deaf children, Christie provides the instruction while Buckley provides the emotional support. “I’ve lived the life of having a hearing loss. I know the rejection. I know the isolation. I know the feeling of trying to blend in,” Buckley said. “We try to give them a safe place to express themselves so that they can see what they’re going through is normal.” With her experience with hearing loss, Buckley hopes to instill confidence in her kids, something she lacked growing up. “I wish my parents had No Limits when I was growing up,” she said. “I think it wouldn’t have been ignored. I think it would’ve been more acceptable. They would have been better accommodations for in the house.” As a little girl, ashamed that she had to wear hearing aids, Buckley decided to take them off during a class — unaware that they would produce a high-pitched screech when

Kathy Buckley helps celebrate No Limits’ 25th anniversay April 17. covered. Annoyed and distracted by the screech, her teacher walked over to Buckley’s desk and slapped her hand. Humiliated and confused, Buckley put her hearing aids back in even more ashamed. Because of her traumatic experiences, Buckley is determined to instill a sense of confidence and self-esteem within every kid that enters No Limits. “(Having hearing loss) is just a part of who you are,” Buckley said. “Like your brown hair or your brown eyes, your hearing loss is just a part of who you are. It’s up to you if you’re going to stand out with it or if you’re going to hide from it. I don’t want my kids growing up shy and feeling broken. I want them to feel that they are perfect just the way they are.” In Buckley’s eyes, it’s almost surreal that she has made an impact on children that were just like her. She cherishes every moment she has with those children. Each child who walks through No Limits’ doors Buckley views as her own child. In her own words, she feels “like the best momma in the world.” “It’s an absolute blessing,” she said as she held back tears. “I’ve seen my kids grow up. I’ve seen them graduate college. I’ve seen them succeed in life. … When my little ones are reading books when I couldn’t read a book at their age, I’m in awe. It’s like magic seeing them succeed and move way faster than I had.” 04.15.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 5

City of Glendale adopts Hero Pay Ordinance By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor

T

he Glendale City Council recently adopted a Hero Pay Urgency Ordinance that temporarily required grocery and drug retail employers to provide an additional $5 per hour hazard pay. This goes to employees working front-line positions, as compensation for the hazards these employees face during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new ordinance took effect on March 30 and will last 120 days. Employees working for a Glendale grocery store, drug store or large retailer that sells groceries and/or drug products, and that is a publicly traded company or employs 300 or more people nationwide, may be entitled to Hero Pay under this ordinance. The full ordinance contains additional criteria employees need to meet to be entitled for Hero Pay. Employers are required to post a written notice in a conspicuous place at every store located in the city where any eligible employee works, to inform them of the Hero Pay Ordinance. For the complete ordinance, visit glendaleca.gov.

or the first time in over a year, Pasadena Unified School District reopened classrooms for in-person learning on April 13. “We’re excited to welcome students to the first day on campus and can’t wait to see them learn and grow,” Superintendent Brian McDonald said in a statement. “We’ve been working to make our schools safer and better for more than a year, and never stopped teaching and learning.” This week, about 1,980 children or over half of the students in preschool to second grade returned to 14 elementary schools. Students in grades 3-12 will return the following week on April 20. In-person learning is optional and students have the option of continuing distance learnings for the rest of the school year. All students will be on a hybrid schedule, of distance learning on Mondays and two to four days of in-person learning from Tuesday to Friday. For the most part, students with disabilities will have services on campus for four days. Operating on a hybrid schedule, in-person students will learn in the classroom at the same time as their classmates online. This will be the first time PUSD reopened its doors for students since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. Other districts like Los Angeles Unified School District also reopened this week.

Men arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor

R

esidents of Los Angeles and Irvine have been arrested and charged with counts of murder and attempted murder for shootings that occurred in the 2500 block of East Foothill Boulevard in Pasadena on March 13, according to Pasadena police. Evan Roland Bynam, 26, of Los Angeles is being held on $4 million bail, while Dante Dejuan Ward’s bail was set at $3.1 million. He is 33 of Irvine. Pasadena police arrived in the 2500 block of East Foothills Boulevard and found two victims inside a parked vehicle. A 23-year-old man was struck several times by gunfire and later died from his injuries at a hospital. The other occupant, a 19-yearold woman, sustained only minor injuries and survived. Pasadena police detectives said one or more suspects approached the vehicle and began shooting. They ran from the location immediately following the shooting. On April 2, members of the Pasadena Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Criminal Intelligence Violent Crimes Unit, along with the assistance of the Pacific Southwest Regional Task Force team, executed search warrants at various locations in Southern California. Additional items of evidentiary value were located and collected during the searches, which connected two individuals to the shooting. Both suspects were arrested. Pasadena police are urging anyone with information about this case to call the Pasadena Police Department at 626-744-4241 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, use a smartphone by downloading the “P3 Tips” mobile app on Google Play or the Apple App Store, or use the website lacrimestoppers.org.

Rose Bowl Aquatics’ new president is a familiar face By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor

J

immy Francis is settling into his job as president and executive director of the nonprofit Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. So far, he is impressed by the facility, which is in its 31st year. “The aquatic center has a long history of serving the Greater San Gabriel Valley in a very impactful way,” Francis said. “COVID put a pause on a lot of that. The energy in this building, as we see the guidelines ease and some of our programs coming back, is amazing.” Francis comes to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center from California State University Northridge, where he spent 10 years in various roles with the University Student Union. Prior to that, the Altadena resident worked for The Ohio State University for six years. He said he brings a passion for building a community centered around health and wellness and recreation. For most of Francis’ career, he has worked in that industry, primarily in higher education Francis has long been interested in facility operations and management. “I think I can bring a sense of a new perspective to the center that might allow us to look at things through a different lens,” he said. “I bring my nonprofit experience. We exist to serve. This communication exists to service the community. We understand the role we play.” Francis is a familiar face to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. He served on its board of directors from July 2019 to July 2020, leaving to compete for the executive director opportunity and coordinate the CSUN Student Union’s COVID-19 health and safety response. “We are thrilled to welcome Jimmy back to the RBAC organization in this new role,” said Robert Kamins, board of directors’ vice chairperson. “While we knew Jimmy a little before, through the search process we truly gained an understanding of his stellar abilities. He continually distinguished himself against top national talent and I know he is the right person for the role.” Pat Amsbry, the center’s board chairperson, added, “Jimmy’s recreational facility knowledge and nonprofit experience will be extremely beneficial to advance the RBAC. Jimmy understands our goals, vision and the increased connectivity we want between the RBAC and our diverse regional community. Our patrons, athletes, staff and community are in for a special future under his leadership.” Open 360 days a year, the center includes two 50-meter Olympic Pools, diving platforms, a therapy pool, two hydrotherapy spas, fitness center, conference rooms, locker rooms, café and an aquatics merchandise shop. It is home to swim, dive and water polo teams and hosts a wide variety of programs including water aerobics, warm water exercise, lap swimming, learn-to-swim lessons, adaptive aquatics, summer camp, land-based fitness and yoga. The RBAC’s staff of more than 240 provides over 100 hours of weekly programming, including partnering with the Pasadena Unified School District’s 17 elementary schools to provide all third-grade students with 15 water safety and swim lessons each year. “We have a very robust learn-to-swim program,” he said. “We offer group and private lessons. They’ve seen hundreds of thousands of PUSD students for our third grade learn-to-swim program. “They’re introduced to water at the crucial age when water safety becomes important. We pursue grants to fund that. There’s a therapy side to what we do. An aquatic environment might be better for people who are rehabilitating from an injury or looking to use therapy to better themselves if they have a disability or challenge.” The Rays Programs is geared toward a wide range of folks who have a disability to join the adaptive swim program, said Francis, who graduated from The Ohio State University. “That’s led by our staff here to get kids and adults involved, to build their confidence and to participate in a team environment.” The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center was closed from March to November, due to the pandemic. Francis said the aquatics center was able to survive, thanks to strong leadership by the staff and board of directors. “They were able to control the things under their control and to use the financial resources wisely,” Francis said. “Prior to COVID, the center built up reserves through wise financial planning.”

Jimmy Francis returns to Rose Bowl Aquatics Center as its new president and executive director.

Kids camps prepare for summer A

By Annika Tomlin Pasadena Weekly Staff Writer

s summer inches closer, one thing on many parents’ minds is what will be available for kids with COVID-19 still a factor. Thankfully, as restrictions are becoming less prevalent and COVID-19 cases are decreasing, several locations within Pasadena will be hosting summer 2021 camps for all ages. While COVID-19 restrictions will still be in place at each location, at least this summer will see a return to some normalcy for children. Check out these local camps this summer. Camp Adventurewood Established in 1947, this camp limits the number of admitted campers to offer more individualized supervision while kids are involved in a variety of activities. hef Sandra Loli Lam and Mauricio Vincenzi have known each other as colleagues and friends for 15 years. They met while working at a Peruvian restaurant in the San Fernando Valley and, for years, dreamed of partnering on a restaurant of their own. Ironically, it was the pandemic lockdown that allowed them the time and means to achieve their goal. “We saw the opportunity in the problem. A lot of friends called us crazy,” Vincenzi said. Open less than a month, the result of the pair’s dreams and schemes is Bodegon No. 69, located on Raymond Avenue in the space previously occupied by Meat District Co. Riding a local nascent wave of interest in Peruvian cuisine, the Bodegon No. 69 menu of classics affords the latest and most local opportunity to really see (and taste) what all the fuss is about. While debates between foodies can often center around issues of authenticity versus creative fusion of influence and ingredients, authentic Peruvian cuisine is inevitably a natural fusion of diverse culinary influences. Native Incan culture, Hispanic colonial trade and the generational influence of Japanese and Chinese immigrant communities meld in various dishes that exemplify Peru’s unique cuisine. “What is Peruvian food? It’s a Latin being married to an Asian,” Vincenzi said. Vincenzi grew up in Rosario, Argentina, in a family of bakers and pasta makers. He looks to his partner Lam for affirmation of his previous statement. Lam is a native of Lima and her mother is Chinese. “My grandad had a restaurant in Chinatown in Lima,” Lam said. “My aunties and my mom were very good cooks.” Vincenzi added, “Sandra’s the real deal.” Lam attended culinary school in Lima before arriving in Southern California in 2006. Vincenzi’s mother was a trained chef and he grew up working in the family bakery. “You name it, I did it,” he said. “I do thank my parents for that — (the ethic) to work hard.” Vincenzi is also a student of Peruvian history. He can explain the origins of Peru’s ethnic diversity, particularly the influx of Asian immigration, as labor was recruited in the wake of slavery’s abolition. Peru’s long-standing generational Asian community is comprised of Japanese, originally from Okinawa and Cantonese Chinese. Ceviche is Peru’s national dish. Notably, the Peruvian version tends to differ from its Latin neighbors with the presence of leche de tigre, the milky result of a longer steep of raw fish or seafood in a marinade of lime juice, salt and garlic. The presentation includes the distinctive garnish of large Peruvian corn kernels and cancha or toasted maize. At Bodegon No. 69, there are two renditions: clasico ceviche de pescado with mixed seafood ($18) or simply fresh fish ($17). The ceviche B69 ($22) comes topped with fried calamari. In a similar category that calls to Japanese sashimi is the Tiradito a la Crema ($17) with razor-thin slices of fresh raw fish basking in a yellow aji pepper sauce. Chinese influence can be found in two other Peruvian classics here: lomo saltado and arroz chaufa. Typically prepared with beef, saltado also translates to stir fry and is prepared in a wok.

Rüfüs Du Sol returns to Los Angeles on Nov. 12.

Clasico ceviche de pescado is marinated fish with leche de tigre, aji limo, julienne onion, toasted cancha and Peruvian corn (mixto, seafood and fish is $18, and traditional with fish only is $17).

The beef version ($17) is tossed with tomatoes and red and green onions and then served traditionally over a bed of french fries and rice. It’s also available with chicken ($16), shrimp ($17) or mixed seafood ($18). Vegetarian versions include saltado de hongos ($16) with mushrooms, bell pepper and tomatoes as well as saltado de vegetales ($16) with green beans, broccoli, carrots and tomatoes. Arroz chaufa is traditional Peruvian fried rice tossed with a choice of protein: beef or shrimp ($17); mixed seafood ($18) or chicken ($15). No Peruvian menu would omit papas huancaina ($11), sliced potatoes in a the spicy green huancaina sauce, which is also served with the bolitas de yucca ($10), fried croquettes yielding a center of creamy yucca filling. Both dishes are served as appetizers at Bodegon No. 69 as is the salchipapa ($12), a street food favorite of French fries tossed with sliced sausage, mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise and aji verde sauce. More substantial fare is available in the form of Milanese de carne ($16), a breaded steak cutlet with French fries and rice or bistec montado ($28), a grilled steak with potatoes and fried plantains. Four stews are also on the menu, including a traditional cau cau ($14) of tripe seasoned with aji amarillo, turmeric and yerba buena. Thirsty? A cool glass of chicha morada, brewed from purple corn, cinnamon and cloves is always available, as is the staple Peruvian soda, Inka Kola. In Latin American cultures, a bodega is a small neighborhood grocery and deli. A bodegon is the small dining operation often attached to the store. The atmosphere of Bodegon No. 69 evokes a sense of humble grace. “When we first walked in here, the décor struck me the most,” Vincenzi said. “You have the sense of a tavern. This was the perfect canvas.” Slowly, Vincenzi intends to enhance the interior to even further conjure a sense of Peru’s “Golden Age,” the historical period between 1900 and 1920, when Peru’s economy boomed with foreign investment, following World War I. Bear in mind, Bodegon No. 69 is technically still in the midst of a soft opening. “We haven’t opened officially,” Vincenzi said. “We are still in the middle of recruiting.” Menu items may change, and the décor will evolve but there’s no need to delay a visit for some fresh ceviche or saltado. The official ribbon cutting is June 28. Vincenzi reflected on his and Lam’s unique arrival on Raymond Avenue. “We saw the pandemic as a perfect sign” Vincenzi said. “The city has been very respectful and very helpful. They were willing to go the extra mile to get our permitting on time. There’s a lot of respect overall from both sides. That’s something to admire. We’ve always wanted to be a part of the Pasadena community.”

ydney, Australia, electronic trio Rüfüs Du Sol is returning to Los Angeles to headline Banc of California Stadium on Nov. 12. Rüfüs Du Sol relocated to Los Angeles in 2017 and quickly made its mark in the city by founding a record label there in 2018. The label’s moniker, Rose Avenue, is a homage to the house in Los Angeles where the band recorded its third album, “Solace.” In late 2019, the band performed for a career-record crowd of over 21,000 fans at Los Angeles State Historic Park. Its performance at Banc of California ushers in a new era for the venue, as it’s the first electronic headline set at the stadium. While it is unclear if the venue will need to account for social distancing, the stadium ordinarily seats 22,000 people, creating the potential for the band’s largest audience to date. The show will feature the band’s collaboration with Do LaB, the producers of 2019’s Lightning in a Bottle festival held in Bakersfield. Do LaB has promised “out-of-thisworld production,” and a special art installation that will debut at the show. The performance is set to be opened by the Australian electronic group Flight Facilities. Tickets are on sale at solangeles.rufusdusol.com. 04.15.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 13

Photographer Andrew Bernstein’s photo of Kobe Bryant was reproduced as a mural on a wall at 1020 Mission Street. Here he is with SPARC President Sandy Kitto, artist Jonas Never, building manager John Adamson, and building owner and Mission Tile West owner Thano Adamson. after the tragic death of he and Gigi, murals have been going up all over the country, in Southern California especially.” In 2018, Bernstein was honored by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame with the prestigious Curt Gowdy Award for Media. He has also served as team photographer for the, LA Kings, LA Clippers and LA Dodgers. In addition, Bernstein holds the position of director of photography for Staples Center and Microsoft Theater LA Live. Bernstein is a founding partner of a new media and events company called Legends of Sport that celebrates legendary athletes, teams and moments in sports. Bernstein hosts a weekly podcast called “Legends of Sport.” The podcast can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, as well as other platforms. The platform and podcast can be followed on Twitter: @legends_ofsport, Instagram: @legendsofsport and online at legendsofsport. blog. Bernstein is just happy to see his friend every day. “In my office, I have a lot of Kobe pictures up,” Bernstein said. “I look at them and remember our friendship. To see him every morning when I drive into the office and to say hi to my friend is very profound to me.”

hen Kobe Bryant died, NBA photographer Andrew Bernstein, while mourning, noticed the many murals around the world that were created based on his photos. He and Bryant were good friends, as Bernstein served as the Lakers’ official photographer. His South Pasadena office at 1020 Mission Street is peppered with photos of Bryant. He thought it would be nice to see Bryant every day when he pulled into his office. He approached his building owner, Thano Adamson of Mission Tile West, about a possible mural. Adamson was so taken with the idea that he agreed to commission it. Renowned artist, Jonas Never, painted it based on one of Bernstein’s photos, and it is co-sponsored by the South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC). “I asked Thano, ‘What if we commissioned a muralist,’” said Bernstein, who lives in San Marino. “I didn’t even have to finish the sentence. He said, ‘Let’s do it.’ Thano went the extra 10 miles and completely redid the wall and had it ready for a muralist to do their thing. “It’s incredibly generous for Thano to embrace the idea. It brings mural art into the community of South Pasadena. SPARC is all about raising awareness and promoting the arts in the area. There are very few murals in South Pasadena.” Never willingly painted the mural at a “very reasonable fee,” Bernstein said. Never painted the approximately 15-foot by 15-foot mural from a photograph Bernstein took as Bryant left the court for the last time in a Lakers uniform on April 13, 2016, following a 60-point performance. The mural is serving its purpose, Bernstein said. “Jones called me on a Saturday,” Bernstein said. “He actually heard somebody say an Uber was coming to get him and to meet him at the Kobe mural, which is so cool. “For it to be thought of as a meeting point and a central point in South Pas, is great.” The recent mural unveiling coincided with the five-year anniversary of Bryant’s final professional game. “The photo I chose was the only photo that spoke to me,” Bernstein said. “It was my last photo of Kobe in a Lakers uniform as he walked off the court after his final game. He’s waving to the crowd. It was the last frame after hundreds of thousands of photos over 20 years. It’s one of my favorite photos.” To make sure no one had created a mural from that photo, Bernstein connected with kobemural.com’s Mike Asner, whose website is a one-stop shop for Bryant murals. “To our knowledge — and Mike is the expert — no one has painted this picture as a mural,” Bernstein said. “I’m new to the mural art game, in terms of recognizing murals as an artform. Honestly, physically seeing Jonas create this mural from a blank wall is mind blowing to me, quite frankly. “People were stopping by, chatting with him and taking photos. It’s in an interesting spot. It’s not on a wall that’s screaming at you. It’s more of a discreet location under an overhang. It can’t really be seen from the street. You have to make an effort to go see it. Not to take away from these murals that we see are front and center, but I like this one because it’s a little more discreet. It’s a perfect location.” Bernstein grew up in Brooklyn but moved to the area to study at ArtCenter College of Design in 1978. He’s celebrating his 40th season with the NBA and he’s now the league’s senior photographer. Most of those four decades he spent as the Lakers team photographer. Bernstein photographed the entirety of Bryant’s 20-year, Hall of Fame career and was co-author with Bryant on the worldwide bestselling book, “The Mamba Mentality: How I Play.” “Kobe and I became very close,” he said. “Unfortunately, for the reason of the tragedy, ‘The Mamba Mentality’ became a worldwide best seller. I’ve been noticing, as we all have,

Romer’s guide to recycling arrives in time for Earth Day By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

J

ust in time for Earth Day, sustainability consultant Jennie Romer’s book “Can I Recycle This? A Guide to Better Recycling and How to Reduce Single-Use Plastics” handily mixes practical information with shots of hope. Romer, a legal associate for the Surfrider Foundation’s Plastic Pollution Initiative and an industrious advocate for the “culture of reuse,” concisely explains the U.S. recycling system before tracking more than 60 objects from curbside to recycling facility or landfill. It’s a useful approach that demonstrates how the process works, the difference between recycling and downcycling, the dangers of wishcycling, what is and isn’t recyclable — and, more importantly, why and how that intersects with U.S. laws and the global economy and environment. The largest chunk of the book is dedicated to answering its title — “Can I Recycle This?” — with a color-coded section that organizes commonly used household products into theoretic recycling tubs: “Bags and Boxes,” “Beverage Containers and Drinkware,” “Single-Use Foodware and Packaged Food Containers,” “Home Goods and Personal Items,” “Tools.” If ever there was a cogent argument for drastically reducing single-use plastic by redesigning everyday products, this is it.

Readers may perceive contact lenses, toothpaste tubes, delivery envelopes, party cups and especially plastic bottles differently after considering Romer’s prescriptions for how to handle such items. Can you recycle shampoo bottles? Yes, if they are made from HDPE No. 2 plastic. What about amber-colored prescription bottles? No. Baby food pouches? No (because they are usually made from multilayer material, Romer writes, they “have no chance of being effectively recycled”). How about aluminum foil? Yes, but with caveats (be sure to scrunch it up into a ball first so the recycling machinery can sort it). Paper egg cartons? By all means. Can you recycle mesh fruit bags? Wine corks? Lithium-ion batteries? No, no, and an emphatically all-caps no. (According to Romer, lithium-ion batteries present such a grave fire risk that recycling facilities are having difficulty obtaining insurance.) The issue of textile recycling has assumed greater urgency with the rise of fast fashion, and it would be interesting to see deeper analysis here of industry efforts to recycle fabric fibers. While Romer gives it a nod, she writes that clothing and shoes are never recyclable; she emphasizes the community benefits of donating still usable clothes and shoes to homeless shelters, charities, or consignment or vintage shops, and blankets and towels to animal shelters. Other comments illuminate in different ways how economic inequities affect people’s recycling choices. Reusable glass yogurt cups, for instance, may be an option for wealthy communities that support deposit systems for such things, but they are rare. Romer praises several programs and establishments across the country for translating responsible recycling choices into healthy business and civic practices, including Oregon’s BottleDrop Refillables bottle-deposit pilot program, Brooklyn’s BK ROT composting and youth employment project, and the El Cerrito Recycling & Environmental Resource Center north of Oakland. Christie Young’s colorful illustrations are the book’s secret weapon. Much as she did with her own “Girl Talk: Unsolicited Advice for Modern Ladies,” Young illuminates Romer’s points with wit and can-do cheer, and a vibrant color palette that helps elevate a weighty topic into something more engaging. She’s a natural fit with Romer’s conversational prose. Romer is no stranger to the threat and prevalence of plastic in our marine environment and food systems. She earned degrees in zoology and environmental studies at UC Santa Barbara before becoming a lawyer, and in 2010, she established the website PlasticBagLaws.org as an informational resource for cities and states wondering how to limit use of plastic. Several of her book’s passages about microplastic in oceans brought to mind environmental scientist Marcus Eriksen’s 2017 book “Junk Raft: An Ocean Voyage and a Rising Tide of Activism to Fight Plastic Pollution.” So, it’s not surprising when, toward the end of the book, she travels for eight days in the Atlantic with a crew from 5 Gyres Institute, the ocean conservation research nonprofit co-founded by Eriksen and his wife, Anna Cummins; the trip enables her to bear personal witness to the presence of plastic in the ocean. “Eleven million metric tons of plastic waste enter the ocean every year. Without significant action, plastic will outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050,” Romer observes, while drawing connections between consumer choices and environmental impact across the globe. Some of the most edifying chapters cover the Basel Convention and the longstanding practice of shipping U.S. trash overseas for recycling, as they highlight the humanitarian and environmental issues raised by paying other countries to deal with out-of-sight-out-of-mind problems we have created. In a book that seeks to dissolve confusion with clarity, these are the most helpful in addressing the global environmental and economic consequences of community choices. Several trash-hauling companies announced in 2020 that they would stop exporting plastic waste outside of North America — a vital step that needs to be more formally supported by governmental policy and law. Romer drives home that point with specific actions readers can take beyond buying cocktail peanuts in bulk and composting food scraps. “Only 9% of the plastic ever produced has been recycled,” she reminds readers, and global plastic production, which reached 311 million metric tons in 2014, is projected to double within 20 years. Usage of plastic bags and takeout food packaging has spiked dramatically during the pandemic, making this topic ever more timely. Per the Recycling Partnership, the average single-family U.S. household generates 768 pounds of recyclable material per year; how much of that could be avoided by changing habits? As Romer’s book takes pains to spell out, recycling is one piece of a complex chain, and the most effective answer to air and marine pollution lies in eliminating or at least drastically reducing its source. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-477-7869, or visit this internet Web site www.stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 85230. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www.STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 85230 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.
