STRANDED IN U.S., GRANDMOTHER FROM CHINA LEARNS SHE HAS CANCER BY MAXINE NUNES
I
n December 2019, full of joyful expectation, Yuyuan Lin and her husband flew from China to California to spend three months with their daughter, Yi Luo, and their two young grandchildren, who live in Bradbury. Three weeks before they were to return home, Lin discovered a swelling under her arm. “I thought it was just inflammation,” she said, speaking in Mandarin, with Luo translating. “And we had no insurance here, so I wanted to wait until I went back to China to get it checked out.” Then the unexpected blindsided them. The COVID-19 pandemic suddenly transformed the world as we know it. Flights to China were canceled, and the couple was stranded here. As spring turned into summer, the lump began to grow. By late August, it was so big it could no longer be ignored. Luo drove her mother to urgent care. A mammogram and scan, followed by a biopsy, confirmed the worst. Lin had Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer — an aggressive form of the disease — and it had spread to her lymph nodes. “I felt lost,” said Lin. “I needed medical help, but didn’t know how I could get it.” Luo contacted the Chinese consulate to see if there was a way for her parents to return to China — but they would have to quarantine when they arrived and would not be able to see a doctor for two weeks. The consulate advised seeking treatment here. The problem was, without U.S. health insurance, the family did not know how they could pay the medical costs. Luo was a single mom who worked part time for a nonprofit organization. “I remember that afternoon I was sitting in my car, and I didn’t know what to do,” Luo said. “But I had heard that City of Hope, with all their research and advanced technology, was the best place for cancer. So, I called them.” She was connected with their Center for International Medicine (CIM). CIM referred the family to an agent familiar with the kind of insurance they needed and arranged a consultation with Mina Sedrak, M.D., M.S., who specializes in both breast and geriatric oncology. “COVID is such a difficult and challenging time for everyone, but especially for immigrants and the underserved,” said Sedrak, whose family emigrated from Egypt. “On top of that, add a diagnosis of advanced cancer in a country where you

don’t know the language — and I understand what she was going through.” Chemotherapy started once Lin’s health insurance took effect in late September. The side effects sometimes exhaust her or cause a fever, but on her last visit, there was great news. “The tumor is shrinking,” said Sedrak. “That’s the goal, so that she can be taken to surgery and have it removed.” Lin has also found that medical care here is quite different from China. “I told my friends that City of Hope sent me a holiday present, and they also have classes teaching you how to exercise,” she said. “My friends didn’t believe me, and I can’t believe it, either.”

“A
Fighting ageist bigotry
ging is not for sissies” is an overused cliché; however, consider that clichés exist because there is a common-sense truth to them. In the United States, there’s much that requires bravery as we all deal with growing older. Who thought aging itself would be a courageous act? And I just noticed that the word “age” is inside the word “courageous.” I consider ageism to be a completely ridiculous “ism” because many of us will face it — if we’re lucky. The exceptions are people who die young, such as Janis Joplin, James Dean, Tupac Shakur and Billie Holiday. Although they had struggles of their own during their shortened lives, they didn’t have to face age discrimination. This leads to my main point: The time to take on age bigotry is when people are young. Ripe people, aka seniors, are less apt to have influential, wide-reaching spheres of influence due to a few factors: not keeping up with technology, exhaustion, and not being listened to seriously. I can attest to experiencing all three of those factors. • Technology: Embarrassed at my inability to deal with ever-changing social media platforms, I continue to avoid Instagram, Twitter and TikTok. Besides, unless you’re a famous model in her 60s, who cares what older women have to say? That said, I do have contemporaries who are facile with these services. I keep trying to justify not taking the time to learn them with, “Not one more GD thing! I’ve got enough to do — what a time suck!” Meanwhile, I feel guilty and left behind. • Exhaustion: After having a career of on-camera and behind-the-camera positions thwarted by blatant misogyny, it’s difficult for me to rev up the energy to fight ageism in addition to sexism. I am already doing whatever I can to thwart these things, OK? Can’t an older woman catch a break? I thought a lot of this biased crap would be handled by now. We were so hopeful in the 60s and 70s, but backlashes were in store for us all. The backlash for people over a certain age is tricky because we either get erased, ignored or caricatured. I think about how “Saturday Night Live” responded in 2013 when Kenan Thompson said he wasn’t going to play one more Black woman in drag. He threw his wigs down like a gauntlet, and within weeks they hired stellar Black comic actors Leslie Jones, Sasheer Zamata and now Ego Nwodim. That was great! Now I’d like to see cast members refuse to do one more
senior citizen gag. Their annoying and insulting mimicry of old people is not that funny and is a form of minstrelsy. Come on, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon and the other women in the show — the future careers you could be saving are your own! Throw down your support hose and walkers and say, “Hire some actual older people for this cast!” • Skepticism: Skepticism is sometimes called for but can morph into cynicism. I have to manage my cynicism almost every day. Trying to get “diversity” and “inclusion” advocates to include aging on their diversity agenda is like trying to diaper a rattlesnake. Worse, I don’t see many older people being inclusive of their own contemporaries when they put together panels, announce speaker lineups, or cast projects. You are complicit in ageism if you don’t even notice that older people are missing. All that said, I can’t be shaking my finger all the time. I have ageism baked into my bones, just like everyone else. We are brainwashed to believe that “newer and younger” is better. We have basically created a culture of planned obsolescence when it comes to honoring years of experience. Countering that, we have lots of people who are actively extolling the virtues of aging, especially online. And our president, Joe Biden, is undoubtedly a standard-bearer here. Even though he is still the butt of ageist jokes, one reason he won while Hillary Clinton lost is that numerous studies have shown that people generally trust older men more than older women. That’s easy to understand when we see older, primarily white men in leadership positions while older women seemingly vanish into thin air, replaced by a younger version. It’s disconcerting to have people relate to me differently now that I’m over 65. I have been spoken to more slowly, more loudly, have had assumptions made about me, and been young-splained to. (I just made that term up.) No wonder there’s the cliché about crabby “get off my lawn”-type elderly people. They’re just sick of being talked down to. If you’re a younger person, do the right thing and call out ageism now before you become too old to stand up effectively for yourself and be heard. Don’t be a sissy! $12B investment benefits local community colleges

lthough just a small part of President Biden’s budget proposal for 2022, the $12 billion that has been proposed for community college infrastructure is impressive. Considered by many economists, business leaders and other experts to be the engine that drives the economy, community colleges are the main source of job training programs in the United States. Given the rapidly changing technology of the 21st century workplace, state-of-the-art skills require state-of-the-art training and the facilities and the technological infrastructure to support it. As the nation struggles to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, this investment in the nation’s community colleges is well timed. More than investment in the physical elements of reskilling and upskilling, the proposed national funding is also an investment in American lives and futures. Think good-paying jobs in health occupations, automotive technology, public works, heating and air conditioning, office technology, fire science, computer science and a great many more. Much of what we have learned about distance learning, telecommuting and the workplace of the future has been pioneered and perfected by the nation’s community colleges. Community colleges are low cost and open access. They offer flexible classes, career counseling, tutoring, financial aid and a host of other services that help students succeed. Studies show that students who earn a degree or certificate from a California community college nearly double their earnings within three
years. And those who transfer to state colleges and universities obtain GPAs equal to or better than students entering these institutions as freshmen. These and other factors make community colleges a tremendous investment for taxpayers. Citrus College, founded in 1915, was the first community college in Los Angeles County and the fifth in California. I have been honored to serve as a governing board member for the college many years, in addition to being a faculty member at Pasadena City College. This lifelong commitment to community college education has allowed me to witness the transformation of thousands of lives made possible by community colleges, and it inspires my continued commitment each day. April is Community College Month, recognizing and celebrating what these quintessentially American institutions have contributed to the nation, local communities and the quality of life for their students. While the nation will honor their importance for a month, community college alumni will experience their impact for a lifetime. Dr. Edward C. Ortell is professor emeritus at Pasadena City College and a community college textbook author. He has served as the executive director of the Pasadena Education Association and as a member of the California Community College Trustees (CCCT) state board of directors.

Pasadena fitness studios celebrate reopenings By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor

hroughout all of the financial hardships from last year, owner Maria Jimenez-Tierney had invested too much into Pilates of Pasadena to shutter the doors forever. “I know I was not going to give up the studio — no matter what,” said Jimenez-Tierney. “I put too much money into it. I put too much time and love and I couldn’t just (give it up).” As her family’s breadwinner, the pressure of keeping her business alive took an emotional toll on Jimenez-Tierney. “There were a lot of down days,” she said. “We didn’t create this and we’re all going through it together, but I still can’t help but feel sad, nervous and worried.” Unlike restaurants, gyms and fitness studios have been closed for most of the pandemic, only conducting classes on Zoom or in small groups outdoors. After a year of countless zoom classes and private sessions in client’s yards, Jimenez-Tierney rejoiced after she received the news that she could reopen her studio. With COVID-19 cases declining from the winter surge and the county moving into the orange tier, city officials allowed fitness studios to reopen indoor spaces at 25% capacity. For the first time in almost a year, fitness facilities, gyms, yoga and dance studios are once again open in Pasadena. These facilities are still required to adhere to social distancing protocols and cleanliness. Masks and temperature checks are still required. Studios and gyms are encouraged to prioritize outdoor space because transmission is less likely in those settings. All weights, machines and other commonly touched areas must be cleaned throughout the day. “Knock on wood, nobody has gotten anything from our studio, and we want to keep it that way,” said Jimenez-Tierney. Gov. Gavin Newsom said California is also set for a full reopening of the economy on June 15. “I’m thrilled. I’m super, super happy,” said Jimenez-Tierney. “Our clients are really happy to be back. … I hope it stays this way.” Other gym owners and trainers are excited to reopen their businesses to help people get back in shape. “The story of so many people is that you were inside the whole time and you were either in isolation from everyone or you gained a bunch of weight,” said Marcus McDuffie owner of Aion Training. Unlike, Pilates of Pasadena, Aion Training stayed open with training classes in its parking lot. Following a relatively successful 2020, McDuffie hopes to continue training people to make their fitness goals. “One of our biggest things is we call ourselves the Aion Family because I want no one to feel alone on their journey,” said McDuffie. Aion Training’s target demographic are people aged 40 to 75, some of whom are at high risk for serious symptoms from COVID-19. Fearing his patrons getting sick and hoping to avoid another shutdown, the staff and McDuffie strictly follow the health protocols. “We have people with masks on at all times, if you want to get water or air, you have to go outside to get it,” he said. “At the end of every workout, we spray down everything with some hospital-grade disinfectant.”

UCLA study highlights PPD overtime By Matthew Rodriguez Pasadena Weekly Deputy Editor
R
esearchers from the UCLA School of Law’s Criminal Justice Program published a study breaking down the Pasadena Police Department budget and its use of overtime pay. The study analyzed the publicly available financial records of the PPD from 2015 to
2019. The five-page infographic is the second in the series of studies. The first analyzed the spending habits of the Culver City Police Department. “This is the second in our series and we’re continuing to put out these briefs,” said Alicia Virani, director of the CJP at UCLA. Virani and her team felt obligated to study the spending habits of law enforcement following the Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020. Virani hopes that the study brings transparency and attention to information people want to know. “There was this real clarion call around the country for people to reconsider all of the various ways in which police intervene in public life. Those calls were to defund the police, shift resources and shrink the impact of policing in communities.” The city denounced the study calling it a “superficial analysis” and said it does not account for the overtime associated with the many events at the Rose Bowl. “The study did not seek dialog, comment or clarification from the Pasadena Police Department which any independent academic study should do to validate its findings,” city spokesperson Lisa Derderian wrote in a statement. The city provided a list of disputed claims in the study. “We are not targeting any particular law enforcement agency,” said Virani. “Our impetus was the groundswell of requests for us to fundamentally reconsider the role of law enforcement. There are police agencies across the country that are making hugely significant cuts in their police department budgets and reallocating those dollars to things like services.” One of the key findings of the study is the use of overtime pay by PPD. In 2019 PPD spent $8,937,198 on overtime alone almost a quarter of the budget for salaries and almost 10% of the overall budget. “I don’t disagree that overtime will happen, but what we really want to look at is ‘Are the overtime expenditures similar across law enforcement departments?’” Virani said. “If they’re not, why is that the case?” The study claims the PPD spends more on overtime pay than the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department and the Los Angeles Police Department. It also argues that if Pasadena reduced its overtime budget to the same level as the LAPD, the city would save $4.6 million. The city disputed the claim saying that it uses overtime to maintain service levels since there are many department vacancies. It also claims overtime is cheaper than hiring new officers when considering “pension and other overhead costs.” “We attempt to stay away from overtime,” said Lt. Bill Grisafe. “However, we also understand that police work doesn’t work on eight, 10 (nor) 12 1/2-hour shifts. We understand that
there is going to be overtime as a part of this job. It would be naive to think that we’re not going to incur overtime because we know it’s part of the job.” There are four categories for overtime pay: emergency, court, holiday and outside overtime. The two most common and expensive types are emergency and outside. According to the study, Pasadena spent $2 million on emergency overtime and was reimbursed for $2.5 million in outside overtime. Emergency overtime is when an employee has to work past their clock out time or when they have to work on their day off. Outside overtime is contracted work for events such as UCLA games at the Rose Bowl and movie security jobs. Grisafe said both are common claiming that oftentimes officers make a late arrest or conduct investigations past their clock out time and the events at the Rose Bowl or anything else require police officers present. The study also highlighted five unnamed officers who received the most overtime pay. All but one made more in overtime pay than their base salary. The top earner was a police corporal with a little over $159,000 overtime pay compared to his base salary of about $107,500. The department tries to spread the overtime pay around through a rotational basis, by ranking officers with the least amount of overtime hours and providing the assignments to the officer if they sign up for the assignment. “It’s basically done on how many hours you have, if you have the fewest hours, you’ll be receiving that overtime position if you sign up for it,” Grisafe said. Grisafe claimed that while the department tries to spread the overtime pay around on a rotational basis, there are a group of officers who want to work overtime and typically do get the overtime shifts. “The study indicated there are people on that list who made a lot more in overtime than others,” he said. “Those are the ones who like working overtime… If they continue to sign up and nobody else signs up, then there’ll be the ones who are issued it. Generally, there is a cache of officers who love working overtime, and they’ll work the overtime.” The study concluded with the researchers comparing the salary of Pasadena Unified School District teachers and the police. The city characterized the comparison as “misleading” and that the teachers were free to “negotiate wages, salaries and terms of employment with the school district.” However, Virani claims the comparison was added to provide context on the priorities of our society as a whole. She questions why police officers are offered overtime pay but not teachers. “The purpose is to really show, as a society, where our priorities are,” she said. “It’s really to generate a set of questions about what our priorities have been in this country for a long time. It’s not to say that the city of Pasadena derelict in not giving their teachers overtime.”
COVID Count Reported cases in Pasadena and surrounding areas as of April 18: South Pasadena: 1,309; Alhambra: 6,804; Unincorporated - Altadena: 3,290; Arcadia: 2,684; Glendale: 19,768; Monrovia: 3,155; San Gabriel: 3,214 Total confirmed cases in Pasadena: 11,190 Total deaths in Pasadena: 340 Total confirmed cases in LA County: 1,228,997 Total deaths in LA County: 23,623 • Pasadena reported four new cases of COVID-19 but no additional deaths on April 16. It has been more than three weeks since a daily infection count surpassed single digits for the city. Pasadena has a total of 11,190 COVID-19 cases with the death toll at 340. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also reported a record low rate of new infections with a daily test positivity rate of 1%. The test positivity rate peaked over 20% in December during the coronavirus surge. There are 1,228,997 known cases of the virus with 23,623 deaths in Los Angeles County. As of April 16, the county represented 34% of California’s infected population and 40% of the state’s deaths. • Pasadena health officials will be holding onto 500 Johnson & Johnson vaccines, following national guidelines on pausing administration until there is more information about
the rare blood clotting disorder affecting six patients so far. Out of 7 million recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, six women between the ages of 18 and 48 have developed blood clots. Pasadena officials were originally planning to use the 500 Johnson & Johnson doses in community clinics to reach residents hit hardest by the pandemic and the city’s homeless population because it only requires one dose. Clinics this week will be switching to the Moderna vaccine, which requires two doses. Vaccine administration may be significantly slowed because of the switch. The city saw big gains in vaccinations in primarily two age groups: 45- to 64-year-olds and 18- to 44-year-olds, who received 3,500 and 4,000 vaccine doses respectively. 48.8% of 18- to 44-year-olds and 72.7% of 45- to 64-year-olds have received at least one dose. • Pasadena public health officials are planning to release an updated health order regarding indoor live events, as well as social gatherings. There will be instructions for buildings’ ventilation systems and indoor social distancing according to Dr. Ying-Ying Goh, the city’s health director, and medical officer. Indoor live events could return at the earliest on June 15. The guidance that will be released soon will require a worker testing program and indoor dining spaces will be the only place that is allowed for people to take their masks off. Pasadena city’s infection rate has been steady this week with a slight decline and Goh’s team is talking with local venues and helping them figure out how to get back up and running during the summer. lant-based burgers are not a trend likely to go away anytime soon and if Kiran Raina succeeds with his current scheme, Cowless, Pasadena will soon have its own vegan burger joint. For now, the results of Kiran’s vegan burger experiments can be sampled in South Pasadena, where Cowless recently opened as a pop-up operating out of Aro Latin on Mission Street. Raina’s father, Karan, owns Aro and his Indian restaurant Radhika is just down the block. The two restaurants reflect the Raina family’s ethnic background. Karan is Indian and Hindu while his wife, Cindy Garcia, is Mexican. It’s an impressive and successful family empire that is about to spawn a new generation of activity. Kiran, 24, grew up in the family business. “I was 12 years old, when I first started working or volunteering,” Kiran said. “I started with washing dishes. I did that for a year and a busboy for four or five years. When I turned 17, I was allowed to take tables. When I was turning 18, I was old enough to have my own opinion. So, my dad and I obviously started clashing a lot because we’re the exact same person. We butt heads. The best thing that ever happened was that he opened Aro and I was transplanted over here.” For the last two and half years, he’s been serving as the restaurant’s vice president of operations. That said, since the advent of the pandemic, he’s been running a vegan burger lab out of Aro’s kitchen. Although, the Raina family observed the Hindu prohibition on eating beef, the otherwise omnivorous restaurant family was not vegetarian. Kiran explained his personal vegan journey. “About six years ago — my last year in high school — I had suffered with a lot of injuries throughout my life, ankle injuries,” he said. “I was putting on weight at the time. (I said,) ‘I’m done. I’ve got to start taking care of my body.’ So, I became pescatarian. After becoming pescatarian for two months, I was like, ‘This is easy. Let me just become vegetarian.’ I went to vegetarian for like 30 days and I went to vegan straight away, cold turkey for three years of straight vegan.” The results of his change in habits were dramatic. “My dad jokes about it,” Kiran said. “I used to eat seven pork tacos every night after work. No lie, actually seven tacos. I ended up losing 100 pounds after going vegan — in eight months. I went from 264 to 162 in eight months. I never felt better in my life.” His younger sister, Chandnee, 22, followed her brother’s vegan lead with similar success. “Something’s going on here. My sister is still eating Hot Cheetos and drinking Dr. Pepper and she lost 30 pounds. She looks amazing.” As plant-based burgers began to proliferate, Kiran took note as he sampled the available options. His father also provided a goad to his son’s vegan ambitions. “Cowless became a thing because I was eating vegan burgers a lot,” he said. “My dad would always joke, ‘We own restaurants. We can make a better version ourselves. You’ve been cooking. It’s not rocket science. You’re already good at what you do. I’m sure you can make a better version of the burger.’ We joked about it and a

year went by.” The pandemic lockdown arrived just as Kiran returned from a trip to India. His vegan burger lab launched in earnest. “COVID happened,” Kiran said. “I started R&D just to pass time. Everybody was sad. No money was coming in. The kitchen wasn’t being used. We were getting two orders a day, if we were lucky. It was just me and my chef back there.” The trip to India revealed fresh approaches and inspiration. “(In India) I was eating, more frequently than not, their version of fast food,” Kiran said. “Because they’re predominantly vegetarian, their McDonald’s have something called paneer tikki or aloo tikki, which is a fried potato patty.” Kiran credited his Aro’s two chefs — Kelvin Romero and Javier Estrella — for collaborating with him on the project. “Javier is classically trained and Kelvin worked in a French bistro, so they’re both very talented,” Kiran said. “They have more of a refined approach to cooking. I have a great palate but I’m like a tornado in the kitchen.” While R&D continues on a fresh formula, the vegan burgers served at Cowless are Beyond Meat patties. “We did some research,” Kiran said. “Beyond Meat and Impossible are the biggest ones in the space. We ended up choosing Beyond Meat. It’s easier to get and for me it tastes better than Impossible. And most of our competitors use Impossible. I want to be different.” Although the menu at Cowless is sparse, the burgers have been designed to maximize tastiness and satisfaction. That said, the sampled side dishes all complemented the burgers admirably and provided further proof that these guys are serious. There are two burgers, a single ($11) and a double ($14). Each is served with a housemade spread, caramelized onions tossed in a chipotle aioli, topped with vegan cheddar cheese, tomatoes and pickles, served on a bun glazed with avocado oil. In a nod to his mother’s Latin background, Kiran devised his take on asada fries ($14) that incorporates an asada-seasoned patty crumbled over fries or tots with melted vegan cheddar, sour cream and pico de gallo. In addition to fresh guacamole ($9) and a requisite kale salad ($14), there are brussels sprouts ($9), flash fried with onions, vinegar and lemon juice as well as roasted cauliflower ($9) seared with coconut milk, bell peppers, onions and tossed in a house pesto. All are superb. Kiran expects to maintain the pop-up at Aro for the next several months, while he looks to find a permanent location for the concept. “The goal is that by the time we move out, we have a solid customer base,” Kiran said. “With R&D, right now it’s still heavy. We’re still messing with the paneer. We’re still messing with aloo tikki. Before we move out, we want to have another staple second burger.” He sees opportunity in Pasadena. “There isn’t a vegan burger joint in Pasadena,” Kiran said. “Who is giving that homestyle experience at a decent price? I’m not the only fool eating vegan food here. They exist. You don’t have to be vegan to enjoy my burger. We do things differently. We want it to feel soulful.” 04.22.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 11

Stoney Point: The legend lives By Frier McCollister Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

n Saturdays at Stoney Point, a gourmand picking up a takeout dinner order may be met by a trim, distinguished gentleman in a dapper suit gamely offering to caddy one’s bags to the waiting car. That gentleman is Amedeo Costantino, the 87-year-old owner of Stoney Point and a local living legend in Pasadena’s fine dining history. “I started Old Town,” said Amedeo in a loud stage whisper. Joined by his daughter Roberta, who serves as the ostensible general manager of the enterprise, Amedeo recalled his storied forays in the local restaurant scene. The Costantinos took over Stoney Point in 1994 but the opening represented the culmination of a journey that started in Naples. “He worked as a busboy in Naples at the age of 12,” Roberta said. Working for a large restaurant that employed over 160 people, he eventually became a bartender with his own operation. “I used to have a bar in Naples, then I moved up north to the Riviera,” Amedeo said. Amedeo opened his first restaurants independently on the Italian Riviera, the second in the seaside town of Varazze. Meanwhile, an older brother settled in Southern California and began bringing the remaining five siblings over. Amedeo and his wife, Antonietta, arrived in 1972 but didn’t join the brother. As Roberta said, “Thank God we didn’t go there. He was in South Gate.” Instead, the Costantinos settled in Pasadena. Amedeo initially consulted for Anthony’s Deli in Arcadia, before establishing Primo Gourmet, on South Lake in 1976. “In 1981, I opened the Italian Fisherman. It was the very first restaurant in Old Town,” Amedeo said. Roberta added, “When Old Town was like, you had to be walked out to your car. It was terrible.” At the vanguard of Pasadena’s redevelopment of its decrepit former downtown center, Costantino qualified for a $30,000 grant from the city to open the restaurant. Occupying the main floor of the historic Braley Building on Raymond Avenue — now the home of the Scientology center — the Italian Fisherman soon became a local fine dining fixture and provided a critical spur for the revival of Old Town. “It was gorgeous,” Roberta said. With seating for 160 guests in its main dining room, recollections of The Italian Fisherman are still evoked by former patrons of that era. “I want to go break a wall there,” Roberta said. “We had all the exposed brick with beautiful paintings like frescoes done and then they covered them up with drywall.”

Meanwhile, by the mid-1990s, the venerable Stoney Point’s previous owners abandoned the restaurant. “Stoney Point was shut down for tax evasion. These brothers — Adolfo and Alfonso Mares — they persuaded my father to open this place.” The Mares brothers were working with Amadeo and now, more than 25 years later, they can still be found supervising the Stoney Point’s front-of-house bustle. Loyalty is a theme here. During this time, the Costantino family empire continued to expand. Roberta opened Bella Sera on Myrtle Avenue in Monrovia, while the family matriarch Antonietta launched Café Sole, which still operates under new owners in nearby La Canada. Speaking of her mother, Roberta noted, “She’s in the kitchen now. She busts his (Amadeo’s) chops.” Peeking through the kitchen door, Antonietta was seen through a plume of steam wafting from a huge pot of boiling pasta. When the pandemic lockdown arrived last March, the Stoney Point pivoted quickly. The restaurant closed for two weeks and the staff was paid. By the first week of April, the operation was back up and running for delivery and takeout. The Stoney Point’s customer base rallied to the cause. As Roberta recalled, “I can’t tell you, it brings me tears. The customer support was amazing.” Amadeo interjected, “We have very, very loyal customers.” Roberta continued to elaborate, “One of our good customers made color fliers and stuffed them in every single mailbox in this area. One man would walk by once a week and say, ‘Charge me $100.’ He wouldn’t even get anything. ‘Charge me $100.’ Amazing.” When outdoor dining was permitted, the lovely, tented pavilion that seats 40 patrons was swiftly constructed. “We jumped on it (but) we paid through the nose,” Roberta said. “Do you know how hard it was to find tents and stuff?” Their landlord charged extra for the outdoor lot space as well. The outdoor accommodations added $3,000 to their monthly exposure. “You’re making less, and you have to support more,” Roberta added. The Stoney Point’s menu has not changed much over the years and that’s the point. The ferocious loyalty of the restaurant’s following is grounded on a confidence in the experience’s reliable consistency. Ask Amadeo for menu favorites and he will point to the lamb chops ($33.95) with a Dijon mustard sauce and minced Kalamata olives, or the rigatoni Bolognese ($19.95). Roberta noted the sand dabs ($26.95) with a lemon caper sauce and the endive salad ($15.95) with crumbled blue cheese, walnuts and grapes. She describes it as being “off the charts” with the regulars. In the old days, the Stoney Point experience included lively activity at the bar on Saturday evenings. With a baby grand piano at its far end, the Stoney Point’s bar hosted talented amateur singers, often dressed in gowns and black tie. With the pianist playing from sheet music supplied by the singers, the scene brought new meaning to the idea of karaoke. There was a raucous elegance to the sonorous commotion at the bar. It didn’t always land well with diners seeking a slightly more placid dining room, but it was only happening at the Stoney Point. The Stoney Point is not so much a step back in time, as a step outside time. It exists of itself, for itself and delivers its blend of casual continental sophistication and neighborhood affability with flawless consistency. And that guy in the suit with the takeout bags? He started Old Town.

Alison Koontz portrays marine biologist Nora in Amy Berryman’s “The New Galileos.”
Charmii Lee portrays soil scientist Beth in Amy Berryman’s “The New Galileos.”
‘The New Galileos’ asks timely questions hat are we going to do when it’s too late to turn things around? That’s the question playwright Amy Berryman was asking herself in 2017 as she began writing “The New Galileos,” a thriller about three female climatologists held hostage by government officials. A semi-finalist in the 2019 Mach 33 Caltech Pasadena Playhouse Festival of New Science-Driven Plays, “The New Galileos” is being presented online by Caltech Thursday, April 22, to Saturday, April 24. At the time Berryman was shaping her script, Donald Trump was still president, the United States had just withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement, and the EPA was setting land speed records for rolling back environmental protections. “Part of my motivation for writing is having questions about the world that I don’t have the answer to, attempting to explore them through my work,” explained Berryman (amy-berryman.com), who Zoomed in for an interview from London, where she is preparing for the West End premiere of her new play “Walden.” “One big question I have is, what are we going to do when we can’t turn things around? ‘The New Galileos’ and ‘Walden’ are both different imaginings of an answer to that question. I’m really interested in how do we engage with the climate issue when it’s such a big issue that no one really wants to deal with or think about. I’m also so interested in human relationships, human choices that are impossible and putting characters in impossible situations. How do we marry all of those things?” Brian Brophy, the director of Theater Arts at Caltech (TACIT), said he was drawn to Berryman’s lead characters: Nora, a twentysomething marine biologist and children’s book author (portrayed by Alison Koontz, G5 biology graduate student researcher); Elaine, a Nobel Prize-winning glaciologist in her 50s (Monique Thomas, CIT program coordinator at Caltech Center for Inclusion & Diversity); and Beth, a
well-known, middle-aged soil scientist (Charmii Lee, enterprise systems analyst at JPL). “JPL and Caltech have a long history of white male leadership,” he said. “For Amy to write a play that has three women was very powerful … The public has an image of the white shirt and the black tie, male and white, but there’s more abundance of female scientists. These are serious scientists who happen to be women. For me it’s really important to model that, for little girls growing up (to see) that they can be scientists, too.” When the story opens, mystery shrouds Nora, Elaine and Beth, as an interrogator questions them. It gradually emerges that they are being pressured to recant their science because it threatens the government’s ideological support of geoengineering. “It is definitely political. It’s a dangerous play, in many ways,” Brophy said. “So many big things are happening — you get overwhelmed with what’s happening in Myanmar, for example, or you get overwhelmed with what’s happening at the border,” he continued. “The play allows us to understand the relationship between the earth and science; in this case, female scientists who are really connected to the natural world.” A story about female climatologists is inherently timely, given the number of respected women now leading the climate movement — scientists such as Drs. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, Kate Marvel, Leah Stokes and Katharine Wilkinson. But it was Berryman’s cousin, a marine biologist, who seeded her original idea. “She and I have had a lot of conversations about the climate crisis, her work with octopuses, and invertebrates,” Berryman said. “She was a lot of the inspiration for Nora, and her frustration in not being able to speak as easily as she wanted to about climate, learning about people trying to get grants being told not to use the words ‘climate change.’” CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Last State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to CA residents
California residents get first dibs on last remaining Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the $39 minimum set for state residents - non state residents must pay $118 per coin if any remain after 2-day deadline
STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 State Restricted Bank Rolls per CA resident has been imposed CALIFORNIA - “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of California Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties are actually being handed over to California residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of California you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the private National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because all other residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “Recently National Mint spoke with a retired Treasurer of the United States of America who said ‘In all my years as Treasurer I’ve only ever seen a handful of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls still in pristine condition is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of California Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of California state residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of California Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what California residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. The only thing California residents need to do is call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Walking Liberty Half
Dollars are now worth $115 - $825 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “So just imagine how much these last remaining, unsearched State of California Restricted Bank Rolls could be worth someday. Remember, these are not ordinary coins – these rarely seen coins date clear back to the early 1900’s. In fact, these coins have been forever retired by the U.S. Gov’t, and you can only get them rolled this way directly from the National Mint and Treasury because these are the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist,” said Lynne. “We’re guessing thousands of California residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all operators are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all,” Lynne said. “That’s why the private National Mint and Treasury set up the State Toll-Free Hotlines in order to make sure California residents get the State Restricted Bank Rolls before they’re all gone,” she said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of California and call the State Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. ■
JACKPOT: Imagine finding the 1919-D Silver Walking Liberty shown above worth thousands of dollars in collector value in one of these unsearched Bank Rolls. There are never any guarantees, but State residents who get their hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls will be the really lucky ones because even more common coins are still worth up to $115 - $825 in collector value.
VALUABLE: It’s like a treasure hunt - there’s no telling what you’ll find. That’s because the dates and mint marks of the fifteen U.S. Gov’t issued coins sealed away inside these State Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. All we know is some of the coins are worth up to 100 times their face value.
IMPORTANT: The dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties sealed away inside the State Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. Coin values always fluctuate and they are never any guarantees, but any of the scarce coins shown below, regardless of their value that residents may find inside the sealed Bank Rolls are theirs to keep.

Readings for the play began in early 2020, until the pandemic paused everything. After one reading last spring, Berryman was inspired to make revisions based on feedback from Caltech scientists such as geochemistry professor Jess Adkins and Paul Wennberg of the Linde Center for Global Environmental Science. “I was demonizing geoengineering in a pretty intense way, and (their notes) helped me make the conflict in the play more nuanced,” Berryman recalled. “And I love that. I love pulling apart a conflict, and a political idea, so that it becomes more nuanced and complex, and you don’t really know who to agree with. It’s been really cool to work with scientists at Caltech who are so engaged in this work.” That fit with Brophy’s stated mission for the program he runs: “making sure that the science is good, making sure that the science is researchable, making sure that the science makes sense for an audience too. I want to be able to demystify the science that’s in the plays we do for the Mach 33 Play Festival so it engages the public.” Beyond a rewrite, the pandemic mandated a creative production approach. Brophy calls it a “Zoom film” because they are not performing it on a stage. He has been using the video platform to direct the six-person cast, each of whom was provided with a satellite five-foot green screen, two sets of ring lights, and earbuds. “All of this is being shot on their cellphones, with green screen and earbuds, in their apartments or little houses,” he said. “There are a couple of things done on location … actors were in the same scene but they were not together.” The process of splicing together various cellphone videos via Open Broadcast Software and the Discord platform has proved “monumentally challenging,” Brophy acknowledges with a laugh, but also artistically intriguing. “Most of the actors had very little room to work in,” he observed. “It lends the play an intensity. It’s a COVID period of time and beyond Covid too, because we all are inside our little cells now. … You don’t lose any of the drama — in fact, a lot of the drama is heightened.” The story’s questions remain relevant, even as the Biden administration reaffirms the role and essential value of science in policy making. “I wasn’t sure how the play would land in a post-Trump world,” Berryman said. “But it’s such a science-denial world that it definitely still packs a punch.” “The New Galileos” WHEN: 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22, to Saturday, April 24 WHERE: Zoom COST: Free, reservations required INFO: tacit.caltech.edu Earth Week Panel with Amy Berryman and Caltech researchers Jess Adkins, Lenka Novak and Paul Wennberg, plus moderator Arden Thomas WHEN: 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 23 WHERE: Zoom COST: Free, reservations required INFO: https://bit.ly/3aiHuhp

nown for lighting up red carpets with his fashion style, 15-yearold actor and musician Isaiah Crews is following in the footsteps of his father, Terry Crews, as he shares his comedic chops on Nickelodeon’s “Side Hustle.” Airing at 8:30 p.m. Saturdays, the popular teen series was written by Dave Malkoff (“Sam & Cat,” “Victorious”) and John Beck and Ron Hart (“Fuller House,” “Liv and Maddie”). When Isaiah heard about their participation, he was sold on the role of Munchy. “I watched John and Ron’s shows growing up, like ‘Liv and Maddie,’” Isaiah said. “I was very excited to work with them.” Isaiah Crews stars in “Side Hustle” “Side Hustle” stars social media with Annie LeBlanc and Jayden sensations and real-life best friends Bartels. Annie LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels. The show follows Lex (LeBlanc) and Presley (Bartels) along with their quirky friend, Munchy, after they find themselves in a sticky situation after an accidental mishap destroys the police vehicle belonging to Munchy’s dad. Forced to come up with creative ways to earn money to pay for the damages, the best friends enlist the help of Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother, Fisher (Mitchell Berg), to create an app called “Kid-DING” to connect with people looking for help with small jobs. With Munchy’s bossy older brother Jaget (Jacques Chevelle) making sure they keep up with the payments, the three friends must do any jobs that come their way — no matter how crazy they are. Isaiah’s character has been compared to Steve Urkel of “Family Matters” and Screech of “Saved by the Bell.” A Pasadena resident, Isaiah said he sees similarities between himself and Munchy. But there are differences as well. “I’m not as goofy as Munchy,” he said. “I just want to make people laugh, though. That’s my only goal. That’s what I have my heart set on. It’s cool that people from all over the world have the chance to watch us. I also like being someone I’m not. It’s all in good fun.” A fixture on TV sets around the country since he was 5 years old on the BET reality series “The Family Crews,” Isaiah starred in national ad campaigns and appeared at the Gamer Awards in 2018. When he is not on set, Isaiah plays the drums and bass and sings. He’s also an accomplished dancer, and he studies coding. An avid gamer, he built a PC from scratch with his dad that went viral. “I started taking music seriously last year,” said Isaiah, who looks up to Tyler, the Creator; Sarah, the Illstrumentalist; and Jaden Smith. “It was around the same time we started filming ‘Side Hustle.’ It’s very hard to make music. That’s why I have so much respect for other artists. I’m going to try to keep doing music, though.” A self-described perfectionist, Isaiah melds his music tastes with fashion. He hopes to create his own clothing someday, “if I get popular enough,” he said with a laugh. Fans direct message him frequently on Instagram, and most of them compliment him on his clothing. Others, Isaiah adds, are mean, but he just ignores it. “I never thought I would make it this far, honestly,” he said about his career. “It just took so long. It took four years to book this role. I’m glad I did it. I just love how goofy Munchy is. I like doing goofy stuff. It lifts people’s spirits, and we need that these days.”

Rebecca Crews overcomes hurdles to restart music career
R
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Pasadena Weekly Executive Editor
ebecca King Crews has spent many evenings wondering when her husband, actor Terry Crews, was going to be home. She has phoned to say dinner is ready and she’s prepared for a romantic night. Still, Terry is busy at work. The story rings true to many couples, so Rebecca wrote a song about it. “What You Wanna Do?” is an adult contemporary track that speaks from the heart of a woman waiting for her man to come home. “As wives, we value certain things,” said Rebecca, who lives in Pasadena with Terry and their children. “For me it’s family dinner. My husband has worked really late hours. Plenty of times I’m calling him saying, ‘When are you getting home? I’m trying to have dinner together.’ Then 6 o’clock comes round and he’s not home. I can’t get him on the phone and I’m (mad).” The theme resonates with couples and families around the world, she said. “I felt it was a very universal cry for women,” Rebecca said. “Men are all about their work. It’s a big part of their DNA to provide for the family. “In our generation, most wives are working full time, too. For me, the song is emotional and heartfelt, like, ‘Hey, we’re waiting. Where are you?’ Of course, if you tease him, he’s going to get home faster.” Since 2018, Rebecca has released music under the pseudonym Regina Madre because she wanted an honest opinion of her music. She has two radio singles: “(I Keep) Holding On” and “Destiny.” Although she never stopped writing songs, Rebecca has taken several breaks from her career to support her family’s activities. Rebecca believes in putting family first and the rest will follow.

Troubling times Rebecca also took a break from music to battle breast cancer. Then 54, Rebecca was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer at the end of January 2020 and was staring at operating room lights on March 3. She had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. The timing couldn’t have been worse: Her son, Isaiah, was just cast in the Nickelodeon show “Side Hustle.” (See related story.) “The day after he was cast, I got a call from the breast center,” she recalls. “I said, ‘OK, what are we going to do?’ I just had this strong sense that I should be very radical.” Rather than just removing the lump, she authorized a mastectomy. “I’m a big believer in divine guidance,” she said. “Twelve years ago, I had a small lump that was not cancer. They said it was scar tissue and it should be removed and to keep an eye on my girls.” She had an ultrasound and mammogram each year, and in 2020, they found a suspicious lump. Rebecca — who didn’t feel a lump herself or have other symptoms — decided to “be very radical, cut it off and rebuild.” She didn’t want to “play around.” “It was a very peaceful feeling,” she said about the decision to have a mastectomy. “I wasn’t afraid.” She recently had her one-year anniversary of being cancer free. “I’m very thankful that it was caught early,” she said. “There was no spread to my lymph nodes. There was no need for radiation or chemo. I’m just monitoring with an oncologist every three to four months. I have to do that for the next five years at least.” The anatomy of a HIT Rebecca said some dreams just won’t die when she’s asked about music. She started playing piano and writing songs at age 9. She sang in the church choir, in theater and with live bands in college. The last project she did before she married Terry was “Dreamgirls.” Once she married, she kept her music within the church walls. Rebecca had an epiphany, though, during an awards show. She saw herself sitting in the front row, in a white dress and her back to the television. “It was like a vision,” she adds. “I looked my husband and said, ‘I’m going to win a Grammy.’ He said, ‘That’s great, honey.’ That day something was born inside my heart.” She started writing, producing and creating again. Rebecca built a home studio, and in between having babies and washing dishes, she said, she wrote songs. In 2015, she put out an inspirational jazzy gospel song that was called “too sexy” for gospel. “It had this tropical, Latin, bossa nova Sade vibe to it,” she said. “I had some conversations with gospel labels and didn’t have any luck. I’ll still write Christian. I’m a devout believer. I wrote lots of love songs, ‘you broke my heart’ songs.” She finally found the right producer and a favorable genre so she could be “definable.” “You need to be definable,” she said. “They have to know where to send your music. I’m opera trained. I write country, pop , R&B and all styles. It doesn’t mean I can sing all of them. “I started to narrow down who I was as a singer. What I felt was a good combination of my personality and style. It doesn’t make me feel like I’m trying to sound like someone else.” Music has been a fun form of therapy for Rebecca. “What You Wanna Do” is her third single. She intends to release an album featuring her singles and other new tracks. Her promotional team told her it’s the “era of the single,” so they’re testing the waters with her music. “They’re dropping singles to see how they do one at a time,” she said. “We’re introducing the public to my sound. We’re dropping another one that’s R&B, and we’ll see if we want to make each song a single or release them as an album.” Crews said “What You Wanna Do” deserves to be successful. For one, the hook is catchy. “This is one thing I always say — as a songwriter, if you can’t sing along by the second chorus, you don’t have a hit,” she said. “If your song is so complicated that nobody can sing along, it’s not going to be a pop hit. “I write for the church and gospel music, too. If it has too many runs or a complicated melody, they can’t pop in with you. I read this book years ago about the music industry. You have to have a HIT — hook, idea and title. That stuck with me.” Telling their story Terry and Rebecca will release their new book “Stronger Together” on April 15 exclusively through Audible. “We’re really excited about it,” Rebecca said. “The book is a great story. It was my lifelong dream to be an author. As crazy as we are, we stayed together. If two people like Becky and Terry can make it, so can you.” Rebecca said “Stronger Together” will cover how they met, their journey together through Terry’s NFL career, and the Hollywood years. “We’ve had some ups and downs along the way,” she said. “We went through some tragedies. We’ve had great triumphs, too. We look back over the 32 years and talk about how we survived it. We’re old fogies now.” 04.22.21 | PASADENA WEEKLY 17
