A POLITICAL VIRUS
It appears to me that in the United States, COVID-19 is a political virus. Because of the THROUGH many missteps from the White House, closure of the water system (to some) in Detroit and the diminishing role of the CDC, the citizens of this health-care-forJOHN GRULA THE NEW NORMAL APART BUT STILL profit nation are at 1952-2020 (PART 4) TOGETHER great risk. ALL IN IT TOGETHER
Help! That is the cry from our local business community. We’re all impacted by the Coronavirus outbreak. Hunkering down in our houses. Fretting over what the grocery store may have in stock when we go. Keeping our social distance. Why care now about the businesses that have been shut down by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Safer at Home orders? Local small businesses really are the backbone of our community. The owners, managers and workers live in our neighborhoods. They employ our friends and relatives. They supply us with clothes, food, necessary services and more. They also donate millions in goods, services, volunteer hours and cash to support our local non-profits. They are the fabric that makes our communities unique. Is Pasadena without Vroman’s, El Portal, Lavender and Honey, Pie ‘n Burger, Kathleen’s and Bryan’s Cleaners the same city we appreciate today? What is Eagle Rock without
Colombo’s? Altadena without the Town and Country Club? The COVID-19 outbreak could permanently close any (or many) of these local institutions. Many are closed already to help prevent the spread of the virus, and others are operating with minimal staffing and revenues that are off by as much as 90%. Most are holding on hoping for a miracle from either the Federal Government or from entities closer to home. The stimulus package approved by Congress and the president is some help, but may not arrive in time to prevent closures. We’ve already seen the unemployment numbers. Increased benefits and cash in people’s pockets will help alleviate some of the immediate impact on those individuals. But, will they have jobs to return to? In Europe, France and other countries are providing benefits directly to employers so they can keep operating and maintain their payrolls through the pandemic so those businesses can reopen quickly and return to full capacity almost immediately. And, it is not only large employers, they are supporting everyone from the local bakery to the auto manufacturer in the same way. In the US, and here in the Pasadena area, this is not going to be a quick recovery, absent dramatic, meaningful and speedy solutions from those who can contribute NOW. The feds are offering $350 billion to help businesses maintain payroll and pay the rent. With more than
30 million small businesses in the country, that money will not go very far. We have proposed solutions locally that are being considered by the Pasadena City Council. Will they provide a meaningful financial boost to maintain the businesses that are our character? That remains to be seen. What is not in question is the need for immediate support. We also need to do our part. Order take-out from your favorite places. Buy gift cards even if the stores are closed. Book hotel stays now for people who may be visiting after the virus has subsided. Revenue now may well mean your favorite places can reopen once the Safer at Home orders are lifted. One more thing, you can let elected officials locally, on the state and federal level know how important these places are to Pasadena and to you. We really are all in this together. And I hope we all come out of it safe, healthy and able to resume the lives we have appreciated. Hope all is well. ~PAUL LITTLE PRESIDENT AND CEO PASADENA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

‘BACK UP!’
FEAR OF DEATH BY VIRUS GIVES WOMEN A SOCIALLY SANCTIONED RIGHT TO A SAFE PLACE
A
recent Zoom meeting with a longtime gal pal. Friend: How are you? Me: Practicing “Back up, you’re too close!” Preparing to shop. Friend: Hey, I want to practice “Back up!” Me: OK. With me… 1, 2, 3, “Back up!” Friend: Otherwise? Me: I’m watching COVID-19 reshape gender behaviors we once thought were intractable. Friend: Like what? Me: No outside pressure to wear makeup, pantyhose, or foot-maiming heels. Oh, and just try to grope someone on ZOOM! Friend: Tough to be handsy on a Zoom meeting. Me: To prep for a business meeting all we have to do now is a quick comb, brush our teeth, check for boogers, and we’re ready. Just like the “boys” … or whoever identifies that way. Friend: I am seeing women on Zoom who pre-COVID wouldn’t be caught dead without their “face” on… Me: I got the memo regarding the consumer makeup con in high school, and learned to go “natural” and like it, early. Friend: I didn’t get that memo. I feel embarrassed if I don’t at least have eyeliner and lipstick on. Don’t judge me. Wait. I’ve seen you with makeup on. Me: Sure, and I don’t judge women who wear makeup. It’s not a personal flaw to be embarrassed about how we look, or more accurately, how we don’t look. American commerce depends on our insecurities. I relate to makeup like “drag.” Like a lot of women, I was also raised to be passive, decorative, and inconsequential. Friend: Hmm. Inconsequential… Me: I know, right? And my parents didn’t intentionally “effeminate” me… they didn’t want me to be ostracized or be deemed too masculine. Friend: What? “Effeminate?” A verb? Me: You know how we learn to not “emasculate” men? (Poor guys have impossible gender roles, too.) Girls get “effiminated.” Friend: OK, yes, and…? Me: If a guy displays “feminine” he’s insulted as “effeminate.” Women and girls are “effeminated.” Not girly enough? Sorry! Forget it if we aren’t white, young, straight, petite, submissive... I shaved, plucked and starved myself, and yet, I was not quite perfect, ever, although I worked quite a bit on-camera. Then boom! We become even
more invisible if we’re past 40. Friend: It’s hard to let gender customs go. Me: Over the years we’ve been warned to never “let yourself go.” Friend: Sure… Isn’t it odd how “letting yourself go” can have a positive spin, like not being so uptight? Then there’s the appearance side of “letting yourself go.” As in no makeup, and not dealing with hair! I do not miss shaving my legs. But I don’t think I’ll ever like those foot-long chin hairs. Unison: EWW!! Friend: And no nostril or ear hair either! Unison: EWWWW!!! Me: I think some new lyrics to “Let it Go” from “Frozen” are perfect now: Snow white hair, snow glows on my head tonight, Not a hair dye to be seen. An order of isolation, and it looks like I’m the queen! Let it go, let it go. Dah, dah, dah… it’s not done. Friend: Not so much. Me: I’m Norwegian, like Elsa. I’m built to last and store fat like a whale, so I can get our people across the Atlantic to the New World without starving. Friend: It’s sick that we think all women should be skinny. It used to be that plump women were a sign of wealth. (sighs) Me: Yup. I stopped entering small-ass contests a long time ago… I meant to ask you if you noticed one of my favorite parts in “Beauty Bites Beast,” the documentary not the book. Friend: And that would be… ? Me: Yudit Sidikman demonstrates some “no touch” self-defense in one of her classes in Israel, teaching Orthodox women who are not allowed to touch men. Friend: How do you do that? Me: She spits in her hands, then fakes going after their faces with her saliva-loaded hands! Unison: EWWWWWW! Me: Who wouldn’t back off? Then, she demonstrates blowing forcefully into the predator’s eyes! Friend: More tools! Me: And with masks, we don’t even need to smile when we say, “Back up, you’re too close.” Friend: “Back up, you’re too close.” Wow. That felt good. Me: Too bad it took the fear of death by a virus to have a socially sanctioned right and responsibility to have a personal and safe space as females. n Ellen Snortland has written Consider This… for the Pasadena Weekly for decades. CITY OPENS 250-BED AUXILIARY HOSPITAL FOR COVID-19 PATIENTS AT PASADENA CONVENTION CENTER BY KEVIN UHRICH
I
n a move aimed at stopping a potential crisis before it starts, a room used for exhibitions at the Pasadena Convention Center was converted into an auxiliary hospital in the event beds are not available at Huntington Hospital. “It’s outfitted for 250 beds right now, and if we needed to add more, we certainly could. As you see, we have plenty of space,” said City Manager Steve Mermell, who was joined at a press briefing last week at the center by City Councilman Tyron Hampton, city Health Officer Dr. Ying-Ying Goh, Police Chief John Perez, Acting Fire Chief Bryan Frieders and various personnel from those two agencies. “We’re set up to run effectively indefinitely, but we assume right now it will be a three-month period for planning purposes,” Mermell said. “My hope is we won’t need this facility at all, but should we peak and the hospital is overrun, it’s insurance. “Ideally, all the patients who need to be in the hospital are in the hospital, but if for some reason they can’t accommodate them, we’ve talked about two types of patients; low acuity but requiring some sort of medical attention, and at the other extreme are people who can only be comforted.” Mermell stressed that the beds, or really cots separated by tarp-like material in a unit containing a lamp and a chair, would not be for non-COVID-19 patients, as was originally the intent of using the Navy hospital ships Comfort and Mercy in New York and Los Angeles, respectively. As Mermell said, “They would only move people over from the hospital if the hospital was out of space.” On April 6, the council voted unanimously to approve a contract with Redrock Entertainment Services, which specializes in providing similar health care services at concerts, festivals and other large events, “not to exceed $700,000 to allow for up to 90 days of operation and/or any adjustment to service levels such as an increase in beds,” according to the report. Medical staff and equipment, as well as liability, would be covered by Huntington Hospital, officials have said.
The center was chosen because it has 97,000 square feet of flexible space that can be configured as needed, a subterranean loading dock, full food service and is located approximately one mile from Huntington Hospital. As of April 20, Pasadena reported 249 COVID-19-related cases and 20 virusrelated deaths. All decedents were between ages 49 and 96, were associated with long-term care facilities (residents or employees), and had underlying health conditions, according to the city’s website. “We would be most happy if we didn’t use a single one of them because that would mean the measures that you are following at home, and whatever our mitigation measures look like in the future, that those are working sufficiently, that we would not surpass what the hospital can handle, and we want to keep the care at the hospital, because that is where all the staff are,” said Dr. Goh. “I think when you are seeing people dying in New York City and their overflow situation … I think this is the right thing to do,” she said. “I believe it is necessary that we have to be prepared for a worst-case scenario,” said Hampton. “I think Pasadena residents and San Gabriel Valley residents are doing a fantastic job by staying at home and flattening this curve overall, but if anything happens we don’t want to be caught off guard. Preparation is better than no game plan at all.” n For more information, visit cityofpasadena.net/public-health/news-announcements/ information-on-covid-19/.
FINAL EDITION LA TIMES CLOSES FORMER PW NEWS PARTNERS BY KEVIN UHRICH
I
n what could be viewed as part of an obituary for the nation’s ailing newspaper industry, the Los Angeles Times last week reported that its parent company, California Times, was closing the Glendale News-Press, the Burbank Leader and the La Canada Valley Sun, two of the three papers formerly sister publications of the Pasadena Weekly. The story of the closure of the award-winning local newspapers was given two treatments by the Times, one appearing on April 17 as part of a broader look at the financial decimation wrought by the novel coronavirus on the long-struggling print media industry in general — daily, weekly, monthly and alternative publications. On Thursday, April 16, the Times published a separate story focusing on the three local publications. Both stories were penned by Times staff writer Meg James. That day 14 staff members at the three closed newspaper papers were notified that they were being laid off with severance pay, James reported. The final editions of the News-Press, which started publishing in 1905, and the Leader, which started in 1985 as a successor to the Burbank Daily Review, founded in 1908, were published Saturday. The two newspapers were purchased by the Times in 1993. The Valley Sun, which started in 1946 and became part of the Times Community News division (TCN) in 2005, will be published for the last time today, April 23. The Pasadena Weekly, which is currently owned by Arizona-based Times 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.23.20
Media Group (no relation to the LA Times), started publishing in 1984, was sold by former owner Jim Laris in mid-1998 to the LA Times and added to the paper’s TCN division. Shortly after the sale of the Times to Tribune Co. of Chicago in 2000, PW was sold again, this time to Sylmar-based Southland Publishing, which already owned the VC Reporter in Ventura. Over the following two decades, Southland either purchased or created numerous other weekly newspapers and monthly lifestyle magazines. Newspapers included San Diego CityBeat, which was recently shuttered, Los Angeles CityBeat, which started in 2003 and folded in 2009, the IE (Inland Empire) Weekly, The Argonaut, covering LA’s West Side, and the Downtown News. Magazines included Arroyo, Verdugo, Ventana and Playa Vista, among others. “I have read these papers for decades and had the privilege of working with many of their reporters and editors,” US Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), whose district includes Glendale and Pasadena, said in a statement on last week’s closures. “And while I’m sure I took issue with some of their articles from time to time — as it should be — I never once doubted their skill and professionalism, or their passion for serving our community,” Schiff said. “Whether it was uncovering wrongdoing or profiling one of our amazing residents or documenting our community coming together, you could be certain these papers would be there.” n

SQUATTERS WHO ‘RECLAIM’ VACANT CALTRANS HOMES CALL INTO QUESTION STATE AGENCY’S PROPERTY MANAGEMENT ABILITIES BY MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ
A
fter occupying vacant homes owned by Caltrans in the Los Angeles neighborhood of El Sereno, some families have run into problems ranging from unhappy neighbors telling them to stop squatting to having their water shut off. One of these “reclaimers,” as they have come to be called, is Sandra Saucedo, who said she was excited when she first moved into her new “home” on March 18, glad to no longer be living in her car. “It’s been really good to be off the streets,” said Saucedo who is currently living in a onceempty house on Sheffield Avenue with her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend. “I was getting really sick of having to sleep in my car.” However, some longtime residents of this working class neighborhood bordering Alhambra are not happy with decisions made by Saucedo and a number of others to simply “move in” to empty homes in the area. One is Marie Salas, a 20-year Caltrans renter in El Sereno. “These people are illegally squatting. They are breaking into homes,” said Salas. “They feel they are entitled to these homes. They have just taken advantage of the coronavirus situation.” While Salas thinks her new neighbors need help, she believes that squatting in these homes creates problems for the community at large. “I do not believe that people should be thrown out like old rags,” said Salas. “I believe they should be evicted but given resources for shelter. They should not be rewarded for illegal breakins and assume they are going to get a home.” Roberto Flores, a member of United Caltrans Tenants, said he sympathizes with “reclaimers” like Saucedo, who had her water turned off earlier this month. But it’s more of a problem concerning poor stewardship on the part of Caltrans, which seized more than 500 hundred homes in El Sereno, South Pasadena and Pasadena decades ago in order to build a road through those properties to connect the 710 and 210 Freeways, a project which has since been scuttled. As a result, over the past few years Caltrans has been in the process of selling those homes, 163 of which remain vacant. “The water has been shut off by the city [of Los Angeles] because of a Caltrans block. Caltrans is blocking water from coming into [this home],” said Flores. “This is a special circumstance that requires people to shelter in place… We’re trying our best to get the governor’s office, the city, the legislators the senators to help us out with running water,” Flores said. With shelter in place orders in effect, aimed at protecting people from COVID-19, “reclaimers” decided to occupy some of these vacant houses to protect themselves and their families from the killer virus. The movement was inspired by homeless Oakland mothers who took over empty homes in that city late last year. “[Caltrans] spends hundreds of dollars boarding up these houses,” said Flores. “They should have just spent the money making the quick fixes that they needed and rented them out at the affordable rate. But Caltrans would rather have empty houses than tenants who will push them to do the right thing.”
Saucedo said she is hoping to have her two sons move in with her. She was living in her car while her sons stayed with their aunt and her daughter stayed with her grandparents. She has been living in the vacant house for a month, which is now without water, saying police blocked an LA Department of Water and Power technician from turning it on. She has called and emailed Caltrans representatives for close to three weeks but has not received a response. “I hate it. It’s terrible,” said Saucedo. “It really sucks because I can’t shower, there’s no running water so I have to use a bucket for everything. It’s really frustrating. In the beginning, I was really excited to be in a home and have shelter. I have to go a few houses down and fill the bucket so that I can flush the toilet and have water to wash my face, to do my dishes and do everything.” While her spirit has wavered a bit, Saucedo still tries to stay positive so her children can have a home. “There were times I became discouraged,” said Saucedo. “These were not the conditions I wanted to live in. This is a beautiful home but no utilities is not going to work at all. But I’m not discouraged because eventually, it will happen.” Some “reclaimers,” such as Ruby Gordillo, were lucky enough to have water and other utilities left on in the home she is occupying. “I have had no troubles with utilities,” said Gordillo. “My family and I moved in on March 18 and nothing has been disconnected since. All of the utilities are under my name.” Gordillo made national news after hanging a white bedsheet on her front porch with “Shelter in the Storm” written on it in black sharpie. She has since removed the sheet in order to keep the peace with her neighbors. “The majority of our neighbors support us either explicitly or by not saying anything,” said Gordillo. Those who say nothing are afraid of retaliation from Caltrans, she said. However, just a few doors down from Gordillo’s new home, draped over Salas’ fences were several signs that read “Squatting is not the Answer” and “Squatters are Opportunists.” Aside from the few neighbors such as Salas, who express their discontent with the situation every now and then, Gordillo said that living in her new home has been pretty uneventful. “It’s been really nice living here,” said Gordillo as her children laughed and played inside. “We’re homebodies so we don’t mind staying inside. It’s been therapeutic.” With the help of donations from strangers Gordillo has been able to furnish her home and stock her fridge. Even as the country sees people hoarding supplies, Gordillo fights the urge and only takes what she needs and passes it on to the next home. “We’re building a community within,” Gordillo said referring to others who have reclaimed homes. “We are sharing supplies and everything. I take what I need and [give] it to the next people.” Salas believes this kind of behavior sends the wrong message. “It’s not fair for homeowners and renters who have signed applications and did it the right way. How would you feel if your parents’ home was taken by someone else? That is stealing.” n 04.23.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

FARMERS' MARKETS, CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL BUSINESSES, ADOPT MEASURES TO THWART COVID-19 AND MAINTAIN THE FARM-TO-TABLE FOOD CHAIN
BY REBECCA WAER
W
hile small walk-in businesses have been turning to the web for sales and restaurants who can longer seat diners are surviving by virtue of take-out and delivery service, normally bustling farmers' markets in Pasadena, South Pasadena, Alhambra and other cities around Los Angeles County are also open for business, and, much like the other businesses, not as usual. Several new protocols to help thwart the spread of COVID-19 are now in place at farmers' markets across the Southland to promote safe shopping. Gretchen Sterling, manager of Pasadena Certified Farmers' Market at Victory Park in East Pasadena, says these new protocols help everyone. “Because [it's] important to keep these markets open, new health guidelines are in place to make sure they stay open,” Sterling says. Social distancing is key, she says, so controlling the flow is important. “There is now a single entry, with two exits — marked and staffed,” she points out. Sterling says for now, its best to designate one shopper and leave the rest of your crew home. "We're trying to encourage one person per family along to shop for now, so everyone can get in and get out safe.” And bring a list. “Know what you need. Use a paper list, so you can get in and get out.” The city of Pasadena, one of only four cities around the state to have its own health departments, is following its own health directives which are in line with LA County and other markets across the state of California – including Long Beach, Vernon and Berkeley. These directives are taking farmers' markets back to their roots, in a word. For now, it’s food-only at farmers' markets. “Non-food vendors and entertainment activities have been temporarily suspended,” says Rachel Janbek, environmental health division manager with Pasadena's Public Health Department. Disinfection is key, and Janbek says hand sanitizer is available. “High touch” surfaces at the market and in restrooms are receiving extra disinfection. Michelle Vega with LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s office says this is all done with the greater good in mind. “Supervisor Barger supports farmers' markets, those who sell products and those who need them,” says Vega. “This is to flatten the curve and slow the spread.” Other farmers' markets, including the one in South Pasadena, are governed by the LA County Department of Health, which, like Pasadena, also recently put extra measures in place to help increase health safety for patrons. Laurie Wheeler, president and CEO of the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, says because the Los Angeles Department of Public Health has determined that certi8 PASADENA WEEKLY | 04.23.20
fied outdoor farmers markets are essential businesses and may remain open, the South Pasadena Farmers Market is adhering to all measures.” Wheeler says these measures include, “Posting signs reminding folks of social distancing, staying home if sick, don’t touch produce you won’t purchase, wash produce before consuming, and no hot foods or cooking on site or prepackaged foods, are allowed. This allows more space between booths.” Wheeler reminds patrons to cover their faces. “Face coverings are a must right now for all — farmers, employees, and visitors alike,” she says, and washing sinks are also available to customers at all farmers markets. Says Wheeler, “The farmers’ market has loyal customers who prefer to purchase produce … directly from the producers. All the benefits of a farmers’ market are still in place during this pandemic, plus the farmers are monitoring who is actually touching the produce.” Wheeler adds outdoor shopping brings peace of mind to some shoppers. “Farmers' markets are outdoors, which some people feel is a safer environment than an enclosed grocery store.” Sterling says that so far, patrons have complied. “We don't have a problem convincing people to do the right thing,” she says. Other markets like Alhambra, Arcadia, Monrovia, Glendale, and Burbank have put these same measures in place to promote safe shopping and keep markets open. One thing all agree upon is supporting farmers, who are exempt from collecting unemployment insurance during this difficult time. According to Sterling, “Farmers don't get unemployment insurance. They are still farming, doing what they've always done, hoping there’ s someone to buy. Farmers' Market is their direct buyer — we are their first person-to-person sale.” Jose Jaime, owner of JF Organics, sells at both Pasadena and South Pasadena farmers' markets and supplied produce to top restaurants across Los Angeles before COVID-19 closures. “Business is plummeting,” says Jaime. Without farmers' markets, Jaime says his family’s 35-year-old farm might not make it. “If they shut down the farmers' markets we'll lose our only source of income. There’s no way farmers can survive without farmers' markets. Even a little bit to pay the bills to pay farm workers — we need them to stay open.” “We hope customers will stay safe, and will continue to eat really good, fresh food,” says Sterling. n For more detailed information about new health guidelines at farmers' markets across Los Angeles, visit http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/coronavirus/GuidanceFarmersMarkets.pdf

THE NEW NORMAL (PART 5) RESET, RETHINK AND REIMAGINE WITH THE URBAN HOMESTEAD BY FRIER MCCOLLISTER
“I
n our society, growing food yourself has become the most radical of acts. It is truly the only effective protest.” — Jules Dervaes. OK, I can’t help it: Braised lamb shoulder with rosemary and thyme; roasted baby potatoes with lavender; creamed Swiss chard with bacon and onion; English peas sauteed with celery and dill; marinated asparagus with cucumber, radish and smoked almonds; carrot salad with golden raisins with ginger yogurt dressing. All of this from a paper bag left on my front porch on Easter Sunday. Yes, the Easter Bunny exists in our neighborhood, and his name is Chef Onil Chibas, our generous and talented friend who lives up the block. Now a “series regular” in these pages, you may remember Chef Onil as the owner of Deluxe 1717 on Washington Boulevard (chibasevents.com), where he often staged weekends of elaborate coursed meals, served family style at a single long table in the small dining room. He also featured occasional guest chefs while managing a busy catering business. These days — like an angel of mercy — he cooks for his home bound, less talented friends in the neighborhood. All of which is to say, these are the only deliveries coming to my door these days. Like many of us, I’m effectively unemployed and am most certainly not ordering delivery from my favorite restaurants, much as I might like to support them (and write about them, for that matter). Notably, Chef Onil’s stunning Easter feast was composed in part by vegetables grown in handsome raised garden beds in the backyard of his home. Gardening. Everybody’s doing it these days, or dreaming about doing it. There’s nothing like a plague to
inspire thoughts of growing your own food. As I stare wistfully into my own overgrown, literally gone-to-seed, scraggly backyard, my girlfriend reminds me, “You grow things!... On your face!” It’s true, my quarantine beard is the most bountiful crop of my season so far. Onil recently mentioned that he had joined the board of directors of The Urban Homestead Institute, the newly formed nonprofit, educational initiative of The Urban Homestead. If you live in Pasadena and don’t know about The Urban Homestead, now might be the perfect time to get acquainted. A truly fascinating, impressive and successful experiment in urban self-sufficiency and sustainability, The Urban Homestead is a flourishing and productive urban farm engineered largely from the backyard of a simple bungalow on Cypress Avenue, near the 210 Freeway, in Northwest Pasadena. Farm? Really? Seven-thousand pounds of fresh produce per year. Yes. Farm. Really. Did we mention that the operation is entirely solar-powered and they use less water than an average residential household? Trust me. There’s a story here. “Backyards are the most underutilized land in America…” I’m chatting on the phone with Anais Dervaes, who with her siblings Justin and Jordanne now operates the farm, in the wake of the untimely passing of their father Jules Dervaes at 69 in 2016. It was Jules whose vision and energy was responsible for what is now a thriving and fully self-sufficient urban farm. Starting in 1985, with the purchase of the small house on Cypress Avenue, the Dervaes family moved to Pasadena from a

10-acre farm Jules had homesteaded outside Tampa, Florida. Jules was attending Ambassador College to study theology, but his love of agriculture soon took over as he began to plot out and plant the backyard farm. “We started growing the front yard in 1989 and by 1992 we started selling our stuff to caterers and restaurants,” says Anais. After the GMO food controversy erupted in 2000, “We could protest or we could do a living protest,” Anais says, and they began “homesteading to the community,” opening a productive dialogue with the city government over their practices and techniques and eventually programming tours and public events to introduce the general public to the farm. The Homestead has regularly programmed everything from back-porch hootenannies to community dinners, as well as seminars on jammaking, fermentation and water conservation, among others. A regular podcast is also produced and available via their website. However, in this odd time when suddenly the mission of The Urban Homestead seems most urgently relevant, their public activity is limited to the Farm Box Program, a weekly subscription of fresh produce. Boxes come in two sizes and can be somewhat tailored to diet and taste and can be supplemented with duck or chicken eggs or organic honey, also produced on the farm. They have partnered with two other small urban farms in the area, Alma Farm and notably Avenue 33 Farm in Highland Park (ave33farm.com), as well as “a bread lady.” “We’ve created our own micro-economy. We’re a multi-farm CSA (Community Supported
Agriculture). We’re at 150 boxes a week,” says Anais. Orders are placed online for pick-up at the Homestead each week on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. A large “family size” box is $35 and a Small Box, intended for two people is $25. Although they are nearly subscribed to capacity, there is also a waiting list. The Urban Homestead Institute was founded last year as a 501c3 nonprofit organization with an explicit educational mission, enabling the Dervaes' to educate the general public at a wider scope on the principles of self-sufficiency, sustainability and urban agriculture. Good timing and luck for Pasadena! In reflecting on the current blight and the uncertain outcome to follow, Anais suggests, “(Everybody is) taking stock of what is essential now: cooking at home, walking, it’s all a possible reset button. Reset, rethink and reimagine what could come out of this and hopefully it’s positive!” On that note, as we look to the future, let’s close with a thought from the late great Jules Dervaes. “By the process of directly working in harmony with nature, we do the one thing most essential to change the world: we change ourselves,” Jules said. With the Dervaes family and The Urban Homestead in the neighborhood, I’m feeling better about the prospects of my own backyard. But I’m not shaving the beard… yet.
in the footsteps of many distilleries around the country in shifting their production to meet the need for hand sanitizers to battle the deadly novel coronavirus. “It’s a recipe developed by the World Health Organization,” says Karen. “Most people are used to 70 percent isopropyl hand sanitizer. This is 80 percent ethyl alcohol sanitizer. It’s pretty strong on the skin, but it’s certainly a hand sanitizer.” This was possible after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) loosened restrictions and allowed distilleries to use their stocks of alcohol rather than the denatured alcohol typically used in the making of hand sanitizer. The difference between the two is that denatured alcohol has chemicals added to it that
make it unpalatable for human consumption. Companies using denatured alcohol would not have to pay the alcohol beverage tax. But since late March, the TTB has expanded this tax break to include distilleries producing hand sanitizer. The couple first donated a batch to the Altadena Sheriff’s Station, then sold their first barrel to the city of Pasadena. While the two could have made a large profit selling the hand sanitizer, they decided to sell it at a discount. “First responders are important to everyone,” Greg says of why they decided to sell at a lower price. “The most important thing is to keep the people who are handling and being confronted by people with the virus as safe as possible.” “It’s a mindset that if people need help, you give them help,” says Karen.

wenty-nine years ago Greg Stark first showed his thengirlfriend Karen Robinson-Stark how to make beer. “He made fabulous beer,” Karen fondly recalled in a recent interview. Not long after that, the two married and since then have continued satisfying their passion for making alcoholic drinks. In December 2014, the couple sold their first bottle of spirits, marking the start of their Altadena-based micro-distillery Stark Spirits, which has received great praise and won numerous industry awards. “Beer is the little brother of whiskey,” says Karen. “I trusted that he would make great whiskey because he made great beer.” However, just as with many businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, their business dwindled as the country shut down. In order to make money and support themselves, the Starks decided to shift their focus from making whiskey, rum and gins to manufacturing hand sanitizer. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
