PEMF mats have a wealth of benefits BY SUMMIT MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS
As more people focus on improving health and wellness, a number of new devices are in the market that are claiming to do everything from boosting energy to curing diseases. While in the past people relied solely on their doctor’s information and education, today’s consumers hold the power of the internet to educate themselves and access beneficial information outside of their doctors’ scope of knowledge. Health-focused consumers now have the ability to empower themselves with accurate, up-to-date information so they can determine which health devices are worthwhile and helpful, and which ones are expensive wastes of money and time. One health device in particular that is clearly worthwhile and helpful is a pulsed electromagnetic field mat, more commonly known as a PEMF mat. A PEMF mat is a portable mat that produces pulsed electromagnetic fields around an individual’s body. This field then delivers healing energy to the body by producing negative ions and far infrared waves. Specifically, negative ions directly change cellular signaling and open cell channels, which improve cellular functionality (i.e., more nutrients enter, more waste is removed). Far infrared waves stimulate and strengthen the body’s nervous, endocrine, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Widely used in Europe, and growing in popularity across North America, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy has been used for decades by doctors, chiropractors, naturopaths and veterinarians. In the past, PEMF devices were large and pro-

hibitively expensive for most of the general public. Today, however, PEMF devices are used in many homes, and costs have fallen considerably. In terms of specific health benefits, to date, PEMF therapy has been used to: • Decrease pain • Improve post-surgery healing • Treat psychological disorders • Improve sleep • Improve blood circulation • Provide chronic pain relief • Regenerate nerves • Improve wound healing • Improve immunity • Increase bone density • Improve energy and vitality • Enable relaxation and reduce stress • Eliminate bodily toxins
• Help burn calories, improve muscle tone and control weight • Reduce stress and fatigue • Relieve anxiety and promote relaxation New studies also point to the possibility that PEMF therapy can help diseases, positively affect cartilage homeostasis and even increase nitric oxide activity, which is linked to a number of benefits such as improved memory, stronger immune system, reduced inflammation, increased endurance and strength, improved gastric motility and more. Put PEMF therapy to the test at the Summit Medical Weight Loss Clinics and discover how it heals and restores the mind and body to good health. Facing your mortality: debunking some hospice myths BY HOSPICE OF THE VALLEY
We wouldn’t think of buying a car or house without doing months of homework to make an informed decision. Yet two-thirds of us fail to plan for a dignified end-of-life journey. The word “hospice” can be scary, but nothing is more frightening than the unknown. So let’s dispel some common myths. Do I lose my doctor? Not at all. Hospice teams work alongside your trusted primary-care physician to develop the best plan of care for you. Is hospice expensive? Medicare covers the cost, including medical equipment and medications. If you don’t have Medicare or insurance, not-for-profit Hospice of the Valley turns no one away – we will care for you. What if I change my mind? Patients come on and sign off hospice whenever they choose. They’re free to pursue additional treatments or try a new therapy, then return to hospice when they’re ready. Does hospice hasten death? No. Hospice care can even extend life because

once patients stop curative treatments and start receiving specialized care and support, quality of life actually improves. Are all hospices the same? No. Hospices vary in their level of experience
and expertise. Medicare allows you to choose your own hospice, but if you don’t make a choice, someone – a hospital, a doctor, a facility – will choose for you.
When is the right time for hospice? It’s different for everyone, but start with your doctor or call us with your questions, anytime, at 602-530-6900 or visit hov.org.

Wellness is all the rage in senior living these days and it is usually promoted via photos of beautiful gymnasiums filled with exercise equipment. The Glencroft Center for Modern Aging executives have spent the last two years speaking with industry professionals about successful aging and have realized that wellness needs to involve the whole person. For 50 years in Glendale, Glencroft Center for Modern Aging has stressed a full life includes a healthy diet, good exercise, continued learning, strong purpose, social vibrancy and deep spirituality. This is whole-person wellness, they call it ZOE-Life, and their goal is to enable full and rewarding lives for their residents. Baby Boomers want to maximize their quality of life successfully,
and that involves staying active and continuing to learn. The Center for Modern Aging offers comprehensive programming to help residents build wellness in each aspect of life. Early results show increased mobility, better balance, reduced fall-risk and improved diet and weight control. Residents also enjoy increased social interaction from group activity in the performance center, ZOE-Life dining options, and lectures that address the Boomer demographic. University-style lectures cover topics like diet, depression and infection control. Reservations are suggested, but walk-ins are admitted if space is available. Research supports the idea that satisfying and happy lives are full lives, and the Center for Modern Aging offers comprehensive wellness programming for its residents.

Patients: CBD truly helps with pain BY GARY S. MILLER Contributing Writer
There will never be a cure for pain and discomfort. Patients will either have to live with it or manage it. Prescription opioids have been the go-to choice, especially for constant or throbbing pain. However, they are highly addictive, have awful side effects and can be very deadly. Enter CBD. Thousands of people have found CBD to truly help with little or no side effects. Patients can never overdose from CBD. Folks are afraid to try CBD because they think it will get them “stoned.” That is absolutely not the case, since there is no THC in most CBD products. THC is
the psychoactive chemical compound of the cannabis/hemp plant that gets you high, but you can’t get high from something that’s not in there. CBD can be taken orally or inhaled, for those who like to smoke. It is also applied topically to afflicted areas where you have specific pain, such as arthritic hands, back and knees. CBD should be taken orally and applied on the source of the pain if the threshold is a seven or higher. The directions are varied, as everyone’s endocrine system and physiology is different. CBD is so new in the marketplace that prescribers experiment to figure out what works. It’s important to research products and read reviews before purchasing – preferably locally. The worldwide consensus is CBD alleviates, controls and manages pain well. Gary S. Miller is the owner of bioactivellc.com and can be reached at 602-282-4123 or info@bioactivellc.com.

Prosthetic training teaches patients how to safely use new prosthetic devices and adaptive equipment. Dietitians develop a nutrition plan that will meet the individual patient’s health needs. Wound care coordinators educate patients on proper wound care and limb management. Emphasis is also placed on skin inspection and prevention of wounds to the residual limb and the unaffected limb. In addition, support groups are offered through various clinical settings. Talking with experts and others who have experienced similar issues and returned to their favorite activities allows patients to build a sense of confidence and a social network. Myths about whole body donation By Heather F. Smith, Ph.D.
There is quite a bit of confusion and many myths about body donation. Here are answers to the most common misunderstandings about whole body donation for medical education. Myth 1: People with diseases such as cancer are ineligible for body donation. At Midwestern University, our medical and health care students benefit from learning through a variety of body donors, including those with serious health conditions. Direct observation of the effect of pathology on the body is an important part of our students’ medical education, and helps shape them into informed and compassionate doctors and health care providers. Myth 2: Being a body donor means that your cremains (ashes) cannot be returned to your family. Midwestern University Body Donation Program offers the option for donors to have their cremains re-
turned to their families if requested. After the period of study, approximately two years, body donors are cremated. At the request of the donor or their family, the donor’s cremains may then be returned to the family. Midwestern University assumes all costs associated with cremation and the return of cremains within the United States. Myth 3: There are hidden costs associated with body donation. At Midwestern University Body Donation Program, if the death occurs within Maricopa County, there is no cost associated with donation for the donor, family or estate. The program assumes all costs, including transportation, cremation, and mailing of cremains within the United States (if requested). Heather Smith, Ph.D., is the director of the Midwestern University Body Donation Program. For more information, please call 623-8067990 or visit midwestern.edu/bodydonation.

BY BURNS DENTISTRY
Most people who have lost teeth are candidates for dental implants. It is important to be in good health since there are conditions and diseases that can affect whether dental implants are right. Dental implants must be able to fuse to the jawbone, so patients who have uncontrolled diabetes or cancer may not have the bone density for that fusion to take place. Other factors that could affect bone fusion are smoking, alcoholism and uncontrolled periodontal (gum) disease. It is important for patients to inform their dentist about their medi-
cal history and whether or not they’re taking medication. Where and how these implants are placed requires a detailed assessment of your overall teeth function. To plan where the dental implants can be placed, the dentist will compile records that include study models of the mouth and bite along with 3D CT scans. For more information, prospective patients can schedule a free consultation or come to one of the free monthly implant seminars at the Sun City and Sun City West offices. To schedule a consultation, call 623-207-1749 or visit burnsdentistry.com.

La Siena encourages retirement Hypnotherapy not a quick fix living as a conversation topic Yes, occasionally I have had BY F. MICHAEL ADKINS
La Siena offers accredited independent living and assisted living programs. (Submitted photo)
BY LA SIENA
Experts at La Siena encourage older adults to engage in open, honest discussions about their well-being and future care needs with their adult children and whether a retirement community setting is an option. According to Jonathan Burningham, executive director of La Siena, no matter how independent, vibrant and self-sufficient someone may be today, the question of “what if” lingers. The financial responsibility and possible care needs of a loved one can take a toll on the family. “With planning and the knowledge of all available resources, the family can find peace of mind,” Burningham said. “The subject may not be an easy one to broach, but we can help families tackle this complex subject, allowing folks to make better informed decisions.” Burningham suggested previewing retirement communities with family
members can jump-start difficult conversations about future needs. Scheduling visits to learn more about the lifestyle and services offered within senior living environments can provide family members with insight into a senior’s preferences. It also educates the entire family about the various housing and care options available. La Siena, for example, offers accredited independent living and assisted living programs. Third-party accreditation from an independent organization such as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) indicates that a community has achieved an elevated standard of excellence, akin to a five-star rating in the hospitality industry. When exploring retirement living options, it is an important seal of approval seniors and their families should look for. Learn more about La Siena, schedule a tour by calling 602-635-6968 or visiting lasienaseniorliving.com.

How do you keep yourself inspired during retirement? BY INSPIRA ARROWHEAD
Hint: Move to a community that puts inspiration at the center of life. Staying inspired during retirement can be challenging. While burdens of career and family life have dissolved, so have many of the roles that filled our life with meaning. While we’re free to pursue happiness, that pursuit itself can leave us feeling unfulfilled. One answer to this can be found in Vik-
tor Frankl’s book “Man’s Search for Meaning.” He writes “Happiness, cannot be pursued. It ensues from living a meaningful life.” While Frankl believed this is a question each of us has to answer for ourselves, living in a community of like-minded “searchers” is a great place to start. One such community in Glendale is intentional in placing inspiration and meaning at the center of
life. Aptly named Inspira Arrowhead, this community embraces all spheres of life – body, mind and spirit. When it comes to the body, Inspira promotes a synergetic approach to wellness that includes diet, exercise, 11 acres of beautiful walking paths and a heated pool. For the mind, Inspira offers intellectual programming covering a wide variety of subjects, including holistic health, book clubs and brain fitness. For the spirit, Inspira hosts activities to explore and grow, such as a
travel club, meditation, yoga, prayer groups and volunteering opportunities. The on-site creative arts room doubles as a personal art studio for creative pursuits, such as crafting, painting, writing or storytelling. Inspira offers studios and one- and two-bedroom apartment homes including independent and assisted living or memory care at 20240 N. 78th Avenue, Glendale. To learn more, visit inspiraarrowhead.com or call 623-235-6400.

People’s lives can change in a split second, and those who work in public safety professions face that reality every day. Blood donors are heroes to people like Phoenix Police Officer Rob Sitek, who required 148 lifesaving blood transfusions when he was shot in the line of duty and lost the equivalent of all the blood in his body five times. Sitek is thankful for the talented surgeons and blood donors who saved his life. “I applaud people who give blood regularly because their donations were available to my doctors when I was severely
injured and needed it most,” Sitek said. Vitalant, formerly known as United Blood Services, is Arizona’s largest nonprofit community blood provider. More than 500 blood donors are needed every day to meet the transfusion needs of patients in 62 hospitals statewide. In Arizona, Vitalant has also been established as one of the approximately half-dozen national hubs to supplement military blood supplies in the event of an emergency. Volunteering benefits the volunteer
BY BENEVILLA
Some may find it tough to find the extra time to do the volunteer work they’d like to do. However, there are easy ways to add volunteering to daily activities. Volunteering isn’t just an investment in the community, it’s an investment in yourself. Here are five ways volunteering helps the self and others. 1. Research shows volunteering leads to better health and a better outlook on life. Volunteering has been shown to lower rates of mortality and depression, while improving physical and mental health. 2. Volunteering strengthens social bonds and builds friendships. By engaging the community, volunteers protect themselves from social isolation. It’s common for volunteers, by giving just a few hours a week, to establish lifetime friendships with those they help. 3. Volunteering allows folks to try new activities and helps them build work

and life experience. Volunteering in a different vocation helps develop new job skills. Working for a nonprofit or community support organization is an excellent way to develop new talents to advance a career. Skilled volunteer work makes job applicants look more appealing to a hiring manager. 4. Volunteers almost always experience personal growth, change and enrichment of their lives. Whether working with children learning to read or helping adults with cognitive issues, volunteers experience a new view of life. Microneedling, also collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin. Don’t worry, a topical numbing cream is applied prior to the treatment so you won’t feel the needles. Results have been shown to improve texture and firmness by encouraging the skin to create new collagen and elastin, helping your skin look plump, smooth, supple and healthy. In addition to improving skin tone, microneedling can reduce the appearance of scars, pore size, stretch marks, age spots, sun damage and acne scars. Radio? Talk radio gives people the power and the visibility to walk through doors, to befriend anyone, to give life to concerns or needs, to get hard-to-find answers, to make important connections and stand out with authority. There are numerous integrated media and marketing choices, all of which have benefits and returns on investment. Friendship Retirement Corporation’s best game plan has been to find the right mix of platforms and complementing them with other marketing efforts. The organization analyzed the marketing efforts of its competitors and created promotions that were as different as possible. This led it to radio. Two years ago, Friendship Retirement Corporation was given the opportunity to sponsor a radio show. For a senior living corporation this was a step outside of the normal marketing platform. Several senior staff members collaborated to create “Successful Aging,” a show that appeals to children of seniors as well as the current aging population. “Successful Aging” is live at 11 a.m. Tuesdays at Facebook.com/KFNXHeadlines/. For more information, search for “Successful Aging Sponsored by Friendship Retirement Corporation” on Facebook. The goal is to become the voice of living well as we age. The branded tagline

is “Winning Strategies for Living Well and Loving Life.” Quickly, Friendship Retirement Corporation learned content is the king, queen and prince of serving listeners with information. Creating and delivering consistent—quality content—to a focused target audience was one of the best ways to grow its shows’ credibility. The guests are doctors, lawyers, first responders, police officers, chiropractors, physical therapists and others who are experts in their fields. They are insightful and demonstrate the message and passion for successful aging. Key leaders have showcased their success with the aging population. The attorney general talks about scams.
