Fiscal year 2019-20 operating budgets updated BY DARRELL JACKSON Glendale Star Staff Writer

With the city of Glendale continuing its economic turnaround, there were few surprises when councilmembers were recently briefed on the fiscal year 2019-20 operating budget. Among the highlights of the city’s operating budget were reaching a goal of a $50 million fund balance by 2020, increases to the debt service and Public Safety Personnel Retirement System, risk management, and workers’ compensation and health care costs. Council is expected to vote on the final budget adoption during the June 11 council meeting.
The objective of the budget, City Manager Kevin Phelps said, is to improve community experience. “We have addressed that in our budget with increased parks maintenance, Heroes Library, the Glendale Works program, the 2020 Census outreach and the centerline district, arts and culture initiatives.” Glendale Works is a program that focuses on bringing meaningful solutions to people experiencing homelessness, instilling them with a sense of dignity and self-worth, and giving neighborhoods a cleaner and safer appearance. Centerline is the re-imagining of the city’s namesake road, Glendale Avenue, which has been on the books for years.

Considered by the city to be “the essence of opportunity embraced by a community rich in history and built on the forward thinking,” Centerline aims to turn the downtown area into a destination spot. “This operating budget also anticipates selling a number of buildings and properties including the Bank of America building, potential sale of Glen Lakes Golf Course, closing the transaction of the brown lot, and the opportunity to leverage the black lot adjacent to the new parking lot (south of State Farm Stadium),” Phelps said. The budget is balanced with no increase to the primary property tax levy. Revenues are estimated to remain strong throughout SEE BUDGETS PAGE 3

A teacher who was under investigation for an inappropriate relationship with a student has been cleared of all charges after Peoria police determined there is no evidence to support a relationship ever having occurred between the two. Now, the student who made the claim could be charged. According to Peoria Police spokesman Brandon Sheffert, a 14-year-old Mountain Ridge High School student completed a police report in February claiming she had had a relationship with a teacher at the school. Neither the teacher nor the minor’s names have been released. SEE TEACHER PAGE 2

not a single piece of evidence to support the teen’s claims of a relationship with her teacher. This investigation was extremely thorough, the diligent work by detectives uncovered the truth, and the case against the teacher has been closed without any charges.” Because police have now determined there was not a single piece of evidence to support the teen’s claims, detectives submitted charges to the Maricopa County attorney’s office for false allegations. Deer Valley Unified School District’s director of communications and community engagement, Monica Allread, offered no comment. But in a letter sent to parents she said, “(an MRHS) teacher was on an approved leave of absence connected to a Peoria Police Department investigation. Police have now completed a very extensive investigation, and did not find a single piece of evidence of wrongdoing by the teacher.” The letter to parents also said, “The district cooperated fully with Peoria police on its investigation. We are unable to provide any further information.” The Maricopa County attorney’s office had no comment on if charges would be filed against the student.

the year. It includes meeting the regulatory and contractual obligations to increase the minimum wage as well as adjustments to the memorandum of understanding. Among the largest operating budgets in the city is police, which is home to 570 fulltime employees and has a budget of $100,922,311. Water services comes in at second with a budget of $52,851,870 for its 212.75 fulltime employees. Fire has the third largest operating budget – $52,493,911 and 92 fulltime employees – followed by field operations ($45,431,998 and 172 fulltime employees) and human resources and risk management ($40,662,906 and 21 fulltime employees). Among new operating budget requests for the next fiscal year is the police department, which is seeking $104,478 for stadium overtime, $410,461 for tablet replacement and $365,000 for records management, among a total of $1,640,747 for new supplemental requests. Economic development is looking for more than $166,000 for a new small business specialist along with business attraction strategies. The community services department requires an increase of nearly $400,000 for Heroes Regional Park Library staffing and operating, which includes books and materials, and other projects like Glendale Works and Centerline. Phelps’ office is looking to add a chief data and analytic officer to oversee the city balanced scorecard program. “The chief data and analytic officer will help strengthen workforce development and workforce culture, and improve our tools and technology and advance the use of data. One of my goals is to be a stat-driven organization,” Phelps said. Balanced Scorecard is a comprehensive strategy performance management tool that assists cities and companies with future thinking. The city implemented the program a couple of years ago to help it move in the proper direction and improve services. The program lists five keys to success in strategic planning including communication, execution, rewards and incentives, and celebrating success for staff and citizens. The process is designed to identify financial and non-financial measures and list targets so that when they are reviewed it is possible to determine whether they are meeting city expectations.

Council adjusts HUD grants funding requests BY DARRELL JACKSON
I don’t think it is appropriate to award federal or taxpayer money to a group home to provide them with solar.
Glendale Star Staff Writer
After a heated discussion, council directed staff on a revised recommendations for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds that are due to be submitted to the federal government. Following a public comment period, the subject will return to council on Tuesday, May 14. The city receives annual allocations of funds from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG), as well as the HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME), which the Maricopa HOME Consortium uses to address critical community needs. Staff estimates the fiscal year 201920 entitlement funding to be level with the FY 2018-19 funding allocations. Those allocations included $2,475,175 in CDBG funds, $718,852 in HOME funds and $204,382 in ESG funds. These funds total over $3.3 million and must be used for community development activities that provide quality housing and expand economic oppor-

A number of nonprofits and other organizations submitted requests for these funds. Requests were reviewed by city staff and the Community Development Advisory Committee (CDAC), which submitted the list to council. Groups applied for $2,976,698, with CDAC recommending $2,005,741 to be allocated to those groups. Among the most-discussed and -dissected issues among council were a
request from Valley Life for $47,187 and the Economic Development Visual Improvement Program (VIP) for $100,000. CDAC recommended nothing. Valley Life requested its money to install solar panels on a group home that houses severely disabled adults, claiming the panels would save $5,075 per year in energy costs. “I don’t think it is appropriate to award federal or taxpayer money to a group home to provide them with solar,” Vice Mayor Joyce Clark said. “I think there are more appropriate ways to spend that $47,187.” Councilmembers agreed with Clark, and the Valley Life request was denied. Questions were also asked as to why the VIP program had requested $100,000. “The VIP program was denied their funding request because they have a balance in the program of $187,644.95 from fiscal years 2016-17 through 2018-19,” said Charyn Eirich-Palmisano, community revitalization administrator. “They have funds still available, so CDAC thought the money could be

used elsewhere.” Though councilmembers thought the VIP should be funded because it is focused on improving businesses in the downtown area, they questioned why citizens and business owners were being told there was no money available. “I have been contacted by at least three business owners who said they were told by representatives of economic development that there were no funds available,” Barrel Councilmember Bart Turner said. City Manager Kevin Phelps said he doesn’t believe they were told there were no funds, but that the process takes numerous steps. “The primary issue is that there is a matching component when it comes to these funds,” Phelps said. “Many downtown merchants, when they see their project, they say it is not going to be cost effective to them so they do not use the VIP.” The plan identifies the city’s housing and community development needs; analyzes the housing market; establishes housing and community development priorities, goals and strategies to address the identified needs; and identifies the resources available from the numerous grants. Any program income received under these grants is also used to address those needs. Among the programs that submitted requests are A New Leaf, Glendale Works, Community Legal Services, YWCA, Boys and Girls Club, Phoenix Rescue Mission and Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity made the largest request, $425,000, with CDAC recommending they receive that amount. City of Glendale Community Housing requested $180,000 and parks and facilities requested $123,000. CDAC recommended $230,000 to Community Housing and $173,000 to parks and facilities. Council gave consensus to the acceptance of nearly $3 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development during its April 9 workshop. “HUD requires the submission of an annual plan to continue to receive these funds,” Eirich-Palmisano said. “There will now be a public comment period and we will bring this back May 14 for council final approval before submission to HUD on May 15.”

City of Glendale preparing for 2020 Census BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF The city of Glendale is working ensure every resident is counted in the next U.S. Census, which will occur on April 1, 2020. Glendale is working closely with the U.S. Census Bureau to make the process fast and easy for everyone to take part while safeguarding confidential information. The U.S. Constitution mandates that all people be counted every 10 years in a national census. An accurate count significantly impacts the city of Glendale and the quality of life for residents, making it important that everyone takes part. Census numbers will determine how almost $700 billion in federal funding will be divided between states and communities every year for the next decade. Arizona’s share is estimated at $13 billion. Sources of state funding are also divided based on population.
Combined, that’s almost $23,000 per person for the next 10 years. This funding supports vital areas such as public safety, street maintenance, Head Start, the National School Lunch Program, homebuyer programs, Section 8 housing, highway planning and construction, the supplemental nutrition assistance program and more.
The Census also makes sure residents’ voices are heard in Washington. Census numbers determine representation in Congress. Because of Arizona’s rapid growth, the state could gain another seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. At a neighborhood level an accurate count could help planners to determine where schools, roads, hospitals, childcare centers, senior centers and other essential services will be built. To make it easier to participate, the Census is changing with the times. This will be the first time the internet will be the primary response option. Individuals will now be able to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone and by mail which means everyone can decide how to respond in a way that is convenient for them. Here’s a brief overview of how the Census will work:
In March 2020, Glendale residents will receive a Census postcard in the mail. On this postcard will be a code that will lead to the online survey. Residents also have the option to call the number on the postcard and submit responses over the phone. If residents do not respond to the postcard, additional steps will be taken to ensure they are counted. These steps include mailing a paper form and a Census Bureau employee knocking on doors to offer in-person assistance. By federal law, information submitted remains only with the Census Bureau and is completely confidential. Personal information cannot be shared with any other government agencies or used for any other purpose. While the U.S. Census Bureau conducts the Census, it also requires support from local governments, businesses, nonprofits and community leaders to ensure success. Glendale residents will hear more about this endeavor in the months to come. For more information on what to expect in 2020, visit 2020census. gov.

Northwest Valley anticipates economic growth BY ANDREA ESTRADA Glendale Star Staff Writer
When Realtors and members of the community joined the Women’s Council of Realtors in mid-April to discuss developments in the West Valley, the three cities that emerged with agendas for economic growth were Glendale, Surprise and Peoria. But economic development doesn’t just magically happen, said Lori German, communications program manager for the Glendale Office of Economic Development. “There needs to be that plan so we can put in all that infrastructure and all those components that will allow (development),” German explained. And some of those plans in Glendale are right along the Loop 303 corridor, added Glendale Office of Economic Development Program Manager Randy Huggins. “If you move out to the 303, that’s our new frontier. That’s where we’re really developing a lot of infrastructure,” Huggins said. One of those developments mentioned by Huggins is a 700,000-square-foot fa-
cility Red Bull, Rauch Fruit Juices and Ball Corp. will build, per a development agreement approved by the Glendale City Council. The facility, which will be located at the southeast corner of Reems Road and Peoria Avenue, will generate more than 140 jobs, Huggins noted. Daniel Benson, economic specialist at the Glendale Office of Economic Development, said the city will also create jobs by working with local education institutes. “The ASU West campus has a new cyber security program they’re doing and also some cyber technology. So, they’re already building that workforce for us to kind of bring in some of those businesses,” Benson said. Education institutes are also spawning growth in Surprise, said Jeanine Jerkovic, Surprise’s director of economic development. “We have a lot of square footage under construction in our city center area, right near city hall, primarily because of Ottawa University,” Jerkovic said. “They will have an estimated 800 students next year. They’re building residential campus, a recreation center, city café. Great oppor-

tunities there.” Like Glendale, Surprise is also developing along the Loop 303 Freeway. Just west of the 303, Toll Brothers is building Sterling Grove, a 2,200-home luxury community, said Jerkovic, who called it a “game changer.” And at Loop 303 Freeway and Bell Road, Surprise will build its first micro hospital – Abrazo Surprise Hospital, Jerkovic said. “Health care is changing,” she said. But health care is also taking off in Peoria, said Kirsten Hall, business development coordinator of Peoria’s Economic Development Services Department. “This is something that’s happening: Maricopa Integrated Health Systems, or MIHS. It’s on Cotton Crossings and Grand Avenue,” Hall said.
And according to Hall, the 70-acre campus, slated to be complete by the fourth quarter of 2019, will bring about 300 jobs. “They’re not bringing a restaurant or a café with them. That’s good news for all the other development we want to do.” Peoria also has shovel-ready projects in the works including Stadium Point @ P83, Hall said. “We’re looking at possibly two towers, maybe 300,000 square feet of Class A office. About 100,000 square feet of retail and restaurant. This would also include the city being required to build a stacked parking garage,” she said. “We would have a corporate lifestyle center. That would absolutely change the face of P83.” Corporate office growth, health care, education and signature retail projects are captivating opportunities for the West Valley that will create a workforce, Jerkovic said. “It makes very little sense to me that (of) 1.7 million people living in the West Valley, 90% of them are leaving to go to a job in Scottsdale or Tempe or somewhere else,” she said. “We believe in our communities.”

Officers at other area police departments, including Avondale, Glendale, Goodyear, Mesa, Scottsdale and Surprise, have access to Narcan and are allowed to administer the drug. In 2018, Buckeye police used Narcan 11 times, and the drug has been used to save two lives since January. Detectives and forensic scientists are investigating the death of an 18-monthold girl who was found in a hot car at an apartment complex near Thunderbird Road and 53rd Avenue April 22. According to Officer Tiffany Ngalula, the child’s father told officers the girl was inside the car for at least “a few hours” before he found her. “The child was inside the vehicle for at least a few hours and unfortunately and tragically that baby died due to the conditions,” Ngalula said. “All child deaths are thoroughly investigated by detectives to determine if criminal violations have occurred.” Ngalula said the girl’s father found her unresponsive, and after numerous calls dispatchers told him to perform CPR. Witnesses reported seeing the father begin CPR immediately. Despite
the lifesaving measures, paramedics pronounced the toddler dead inside the vehicle. The temperatures were in the mid80s in Glendale when the child was found unresponsive. According the a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the interior of a car can reach up to 120 degrees in 30 minutes when the temperature is between 80 and 85 degrees outside. “The biggest takeaway is for everyone to check twice for loved ones that are unable to get out of vehicles,” Ngalula said. Though it has not yet been determined exactly how long the girl was in the car, an investigation is underway. “Both parents are cooperating, and we are trying to determine why the child was left in the vehicle and who was in the vehicle last,” Ngalula said.

Glendale takes first place at Hydrant Hysteria BY TAYLOR O’CONNOR Glendale Star Staff Writer
The Glendale Water Services Department won the state title in the annual Hydrant Hysteria Competition after assembling a fire hydrant in 1 minute and 21 seconds. This is the first time Glendale participated in the competition, and team members Buddy Napoles and Carlos Valenzuela, coached by Tony Lytton, trained for weeks. The team had the top time in the qualifying rounds and won both final rounds, earning first place. “Even though this was our first time, we set out knowing we could win,” Napoles said. The team beat the previous winners from Surprise and challengers from Gilbert. Hydrant Hysteria is a competition that measures a team’s skill at assembling a hydrant quickly, totally and accurately. All parts must be assembled in the proper manner and the hydrant is tested by the judges for its ability to operate correctly. The competition is sponsored by the Arizona Water Association and M&H/

How parents can ensure prom is a night to remember BY SHOMARI B. JACKSON Southwest Behavioral & Health Services Prevention Specialist
High school graduation is right around the corner for Arizona seniors, and teens are faced with a wild mix of emotions – sadness to be parting with friends and the familiarity that high school brings, stress as they push through their final assignments, and nervousness and elation as they prepare to walk across the graduation stage to move on to their next phase of life. Between all this, there is one event in particular that brings much anticipation, planning and excitement – prom! Teens spend countless hours preparing for this one special night. It’s a last hurrah where all of a teen’s friends are in one place at the same time. But as fun and as memorable as this night should be, it can quickly turn dangerous.
Each year, teens across the country engage in this so-called “rite of passage,” but many teens are also put at risk during this time. According to a report put out by AAA: • 39% of high school teens report it is likely they or their friends will be under the influence of drugs or alcohol sometime during prom or graduation season. • 87% of teens believe their peers are likely to drive impaired instead of calling their parent or guardian for help because they are afraid of getting in trouble. • 33% of teens know other teens who have been arrested for impaired driving. • 23% of teens have ridden in a car with an impaired driver. • 28% of teens have called their parents at least once to pick them up because either they or their ride was impaired. • 83% of teens would support a program that offers to tow the family vehicle
As cremation has become more popular in recent years, some providers have learned to cut corners. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a surge of national scandals that has put doubt in the minds of families that choose cremation.

home for free to avoid the risk of anyone driving impaired even when it means admitting to their parents or guardians that they’ve been drinking and/or using drugs. Not sure how to ensure your child makes prom a lasting memory with a sober and safe celebration? Here are a few tips to help: Set expectations. While helping your teen prepare for prom, discuss what you expect from them on this occasion. Just because it’s a special night doesn’t mean that all rules go out the window. Don’t assume your teen is “too good.” Talk to your teen openly and honestly about their thoughts and feelings on alcohol and drug use, as well as the dangers. What should they do if they are offered drugs or alcohol? Know the plan for the night. Know where your teen is getting ready, where they’re having dinner, what time prom starts and ends and what their plans are following the event. It also doesn’t hurt to check in with other parents to make sure they got the same itinerary. Set a curfew. Since it is a special occasion, maybe the curfew can be set later than usual, but there should still be a cutoff time for when your teen should return home. Make safe transportation arrangements. Make sure your teen has a safe way to get to and from prom, and encourage them not get in a car with a person
who has been drinking. Make it clear that if your teen feels unsafe riding with someone or driving, they can call you. Keep in touch. Throughout the night, send a text to your teen and ask that they do the same. Parents can ask how the night is going, and you can ask your teens to confirm once they’ve made it to dinner or the venue. This also provides them the opportunity to tell parents if something is going wrong. Create a contingency plan. If something does go wrong, having a safe word or phrase can alleviate any worries or even embarrassment if your teen needs you to pick them up. Don’t think you can control everything. Sure, parents may wish they could prevent their child from making any sort of dangerous mistake, but being controlling and overbearing may not be the right way to go about this. Being too controlling may distance you from your teen and prevent them from calling if they get into a bad situation. As you and your teen prepare for prom, remember that parents have the most impact on teens choosing to live a healthy lifestyle. Talk about expectations and safety so that your teen can have a fun and positive, but still safe, prom night. - Author Shomari B. Jackson is a prevention specialist with Southwest Behavioral & Health Services in the Community Youth Development Department.

Therapy dogs in action throughout West Valley BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ Glendale Star Contributing Writer
Sometimes the best helping hand is not a hand at all – it’s a paw. “Studies show animal-assisted therapy specifically helps to lower cortisol levels in the brain; reduce blood pressure and heart rate, ease anxiety, and increase endorphins and oxytocin,” said Wendy Brishke, LMSW, a child clinician at the Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) Glendale Healthcare Center who uses both 7-year-old Casanova and 2-year-old Dazzle – both golden retrievers – in her practice. Therapy dogs like Casanova and Dazzle have been used at multiple West Valley health care centers through JFCS – a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization that has provided quality behavioral health, health care and social services to children, families and adults of all ages since 2017. “People often confuse therapy dogs with service dogs and/or emotional support dogs,” said Alex Warren, an enrollment and eligibility manager at JFCS as well as a therapy dog owner and trainer. A service dog, according to Warren,

is trained to help people – generally one specific person at a time – with disabilities including visual impairments, mobility issues such as paralysis, epilepsy and more. “They are considered working animals, not pets, another important distinction,” said Warren, noting that is why if you’ve ever come across a service animal, you’ve likely been told not to pet or play with him or her. An emotional support dog, Warren said, is trained to provide its owner therapeutic benefits through companionship. “A therapy dog, however, is trained to provide support, comfort and affection to one or more individuals, or even to a group of multiple individuals,” Warren said. “You can hug them, kiss them, even cry on them.” Warren’s 3-year-old golden Therapy dogs are in use at Jewish Family & Children’s Service’s Glendale Healthcare Center, among other Valley locations.
retriever, Wrigley, is a service dog at the JFCS Michael R. Zent Healthcare Center (MRZ) in Phoenix. He works in several areas of the clinic – both with children and adults – helping to do everything from ease anxiety before blood draws to comforting support groups to even calming PTSD patients. Wrigley has even been known to work his way through obstacle courses of sorts at MRZ to help children in their sensory integration therapy programs. MRZ co-director Diane Palacios said the dogs’ impact on patients is clear. “From their facial expressions to the immediate change in their behavior, our patients physically change for the better within minutes of interaction with one of these dogs,” Palacios said. And while there are several dozen stories that come to Palacios’s mind to illustrate Wrigley’s direct impact, a recent teen patient with autism stands out. “He was here to meet with his practitioner for his meds, but he was unstable to the point where we thought he would need to be hospitalized,” Palacios said. Enter Wrigley. “By interacting with Wrigley, this teen was able to regulate, and we were
able to move forward with his service plan,” Palacios said. According to Palacios, the effect is not limited to patients. “When a staff member lost her father-in-law, she was visually upset,” Palacios said. “Wrigley sensed something was wrong and immediately instinctually went to comfort her.” Casanova’s and Dazzle’s work at the JFCS Glendale Healthcare Center is a bit more narrowly focused than Wrigley. “Casanova and Dazzle work with me in my practice to specifically help children,” Brishke said. “I use them as tools with children that have trauma as well as health and mental issues.” According to Brishke, their duties differ based on the child. “For some, the dogs are meant to be a calming presence. For others, they provide a needed distraction. And for others, they – Dazzle in particular – provide a lesson in patience,” Brishke said. Brishke often uses Dazzle to show children what a particular behavior can look like to someone else. “I will have Dazzle continuously model bad or repetitive behaviors in front of a child, until the child clearly sees the behavior as annoying or frustrating,” Brishke said. “Then, it becomes a teachable moment. I ask the child if there are any disruptive or repetitive behaviors he or she might be doing at home, in class or even in treatment. And it clicks.” For children in deep distress and those who have overcome severe trauma, Casanova and Dazzle are often able to do what humans cannot: get them to stay and listen. “We often see children who have lived through severe neglect, lived in multiple group or foster homes or have survived through more than any child should,” Brishke said. “They may be wary of any adult, even us, at first, but they are often happy to see the dogs.” And, according to Brishke, while these children may not be readily open to services from the onset, they are willing to give it a chance if it means playing with Casanova and Dazzle. Extraordinary Rides: 2019 Lexus IS350 BY C.A. HAIRE Glendale Star Contributing Writer There are plenty of small sports sedans on the market, but those seeking one with Japanese engineering and build quality should give this Lexus IS350 a test drive. The IS350 is a nice looking vehicle, especially with its Ultrasonic Blue Mica paint job. But one look under the hood proves more impressive, as this Lexus boasts a 3.5-liter V-8 that cranks 311 horsepower. It is hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The fuel economy claimed is 20/28 mpg. The IS350 we tested featured the optional F-Sport package. It includes larger alloy wheels, summer tires, special in-

smooth ride and features strong brakes. The body structure is solid and has no rattles or leaks. The fuel economy was 17 mpg in the city, with 27/29 on highway trips. The seats are comfortable, and most controls are easy to operate. The only complaint worth mentioning is the poor sun visor design. Lexus does not offer enough slide adjustment to block the sun through the side windows, which caused my face to get baked by the sun on a hot day. This is a serious oversight that needs to be corrected. But overall, the Lexus IS350 is a nice, solid car that loves to be driven hard, yet is a pussycat in daily commuting. It is a good alternative to the European competition.

Decluttering could prove to be lucrative BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Cleaning…decluttering…some people dread it. It’s not surprising that a recent study published in “Current Psychology” found a substantial link between procrastination and clutter problems in all age groups. Sometimes, though, what appears to be old junk can hold value. There’s no better time to find out than during Clear Your Clutter Day on Friday, May 3, and National Clean Your Room Day on Friday, May 10. “Don’t assume that just because something is old, ugly, tattered or missing a part that it’s worthless,” said Erik Hoyer, owner of EJ’s Auction & Appraisal. “You’d be surprised at what people collect and what they’re willing to pay for. We start our bidding at $10, but I’ve seen some items that were deemed as ‘junk’ sell for hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars.”
Hoyer shared seven examples of items that could hold value: Mid-modern furniture: Think 1950s Herman Miller Eames chairs and anything Danish modern teak…this style is popular and highly sought after depending on the designer. The better the condition, the better the value. In addition to Herman Miller, brands that do well at auction include Heywood-Wakefield, Finn Juhl and Edward Wormley. Costume jewelry: This style of vintage ornamentation that originated in the 1920s and exploded in the 1950s could be worth a lot of money depending on the workmanship and materials. Some brands that do well at auction include Weiss, Eisenberg and Lisner. Art that’s out of sight: That painting that’s been collecting dust in the closet or garage could be valuable. Check the painting for marks or signatures and check the back for sales receipts or

Addressing difficult questions we struggle with Today, let’s muse on answering those difficult “Why” questions we have from time to time. Here’s a stellar example of someone struggling at 66 years old to answer her deep questions. A friend sent this to me. “I am 66 years old and I have so many unanswered questions in my life. I still haven’t found out who let the dogs out. Remember ‘where’s the beef?’ Well, where is it? I still haven’t found out how to get to Sesame Street. Why didn’t Dorie use Google Maps to find her way home? Why do all flavors of fruit loops taste the same? Why are eggs packaged in a flimsy paper carton while batteries are secured in plastic that’s tough as nails? Consider this: Why is ‘abbreviated’ such a long word? Why is there a ‘D’ in ‘fridge’ but not in refrigerator? That has perplexed me for years. Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavoring, yet dish-washing liquid is made with real lemons? Why do they sterilize the needle before lethal injections? Why do you have to ‘put your two cents in’ but it’s only a ‘penny for your thoughts?’ Where did that extra
CHURCH COMMUNITY CONNECTION Pastor Ed Delph Glendale Star Contributing Writer
penny go? But wait, there’s more! Why did the chicken cross the road? Speaking of chickens, which came first, the chicken or the egg? That has kept me up for nights on end. And just what is Victoria’s Secret? I want to know. And why do ‘The Alphabet Song’ and ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’ have the same tune? And why did you just try to sing those two previous songs? Gotcha! Do you really think I am this witty? Let me tell you a secret. I received these thoughts from a friend who stole it from her brother’s girlfriend’s uncle’s cousin’s baby doctor who lived next door to an old classmate’s mailman. Take it from me. Keep it going and put a smile on someone’s face. And for goodness’ sake, don’t sweat the small stuff. Save your energy for
the bigger stuff.” Did you know there is a psalm in the Bible with wisdom on trying to make sense of things there seems to be no answers for? Psalm 131 was written by David to God for Israel in those questioning times. “O Lord, my heart is not proud, or my eyes haughty; nor do I involve myself in great matters, or in things too difficult for me. Surely, I have composed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child rests against his mother, my soul is like a weaned child within me. God’s people, hope in the Lord, from this time forth and forever more.” That’s great advice. Hope now and hope always because hope floats us in deflating times. Hope is the expectation of future good that brings with it future understanding. There will be times in life when nothing makes sense. “Why did this happen to me? Why did a loved one die way too early? Why are there all the problems in the world? Why… Why… Why?” I have a feeling we will be asking “Why” questions way after we are 66 years old, don’t you?
Do you see what David did here? After you have tried to make sense of it and it doesn’t make sense no matter what you do, leave it alone. It’s a God thing. Don’t judge God and everyone else. Right now, what has happened is just beyond your earthly understanding. Don’t get proud and try to play God. Don’t get frustrated, get quiet like that weaned child. Lean into God. Don’t run from God. Run to God. Be humble enough to understand you don’t have to understand right now. In some cases, there may never be an answer so let it be. Here’s your takeaway. Do you have an unanswered question in life? No. Then don’t worry. Do you have an unanswered question in life? Yes. Can you do something about it? Yes. Then don’t worry. Do you have an unanswered question in life? Yes. Can you do something about it? No. Then don’t worry. Any more questions? Fighter aims for return to title contention with Bellator BY DARRELL JACKSON Glendale Star Staff Writer
Benson Henderson may be one of the top fighters in the mixed martial arts world, but when it comes to his return to the ring April 27 he’s focused on so much more than his next fight. Marking his debut on a new six-fight contract signed in November, Henderson will face off against Adam Piccolotti at Bellator 220 in San Jose, California. “I am focused on another title run and becoming the first fighter to hold the world title in three organizations,” Henderson said. Henderson, a former UFC and World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight (146-155 pounds) champion who trains at The MMA Lab in Glendale, came to Bellator in 2016, when he unsuccessfully challenged for the promotion’s welterweight (156-170) title against then-champ Andrey Koreshkov. “I struggled when I came to Bellator and lost two of my first three fights,” Henderson said. “I don’t think I fought badly; I just had some tough outings and couldn’t pull out wins in those early fights.” A natural lightweight, Henderson dropped down to 155 pounds, scoring a TKO win over Patricio Freire before suffering a split-decision loss to Michael Chandler in a bid for Bellator’s lightweight belt. After the loss to Chandler, Henderson felt something was wrong, and discovered he needed an ACL surgery. “I would never make that an excuse, but having the surgery was a turnaround for me,” Henderson said. “I was still performing well, but it got to a point where I wasn’t getting up as fast, I wasn’t kicking as hard. At that point, I had to get surgery.” After a 10-month layoff, he returned in September 2017 and again lost a split-decision to Patricky Freire, before bouncing back with wins over Roger Huerta and Saad Awad. “I am now feeling 100% and ready to rock and roll and show the world how much better I am,” Henderson said. “I have been working on all aspects of my game and am ready to show the world

That doesn’t make sense to me.” He feels Bellator is focused on putting on the best fights possible, and matching fighters who can showcase what the company has to offer. “Bellator is doing a great job with their fighters. If you look at the cards in the past they are putting on some amazing fights. I am honored to be part of this organization,” Henderson said. “Now, I am focused on getting back to the top of the mountain and getting that title.” Henderson may not be the only fighter in his household making waves in the near future, though. His wife of 12 years, Maria, could prove to be someone to keep an eye on. “My wife is going to start fighting soon, and of course I’ll be helping her out and all that after baby No. 3 is born later this year. So maybe another six months or so after that she’ll be having her first fight, after training for a little while now,” Henderson said. “I may be biased, but I think she’s a lot better than she gives herself credit for. But because of having three kids in three years she hasn’t been able to train super consistently, so she has been dabbling at this for a while now.” A father of two, with a third on the way, Henderson said while he knows his fighting career is nearing an end – this could be his final contract – he knows where his future is headed. “In five years I will be tolling around my three little ones to their wrestling tournaments around Phoenix and all of Arizona and coaching at The MMA Lab,” Henderson said. “That, plus I will be cheering on my wife. She is going to surprise a lot of people when she steps into the cage and will be one of the most popular and dominant fighters. That is where I see myself in five years.”

Friends going step for step atop Arizona distance running BY ERIC NEWMAN
Deer Valley sophomore Randy Espinoza is the division 2 state leader in the 3,200-meter dash.
Glendale Star Staff Writer
Deer Valley sophomore Randy Espinoza and Sunrise Mountain junior Braedon Palmer have distanced themselves from the rest of Arizona’s division 2 in the 3,200-meter dash this season. Their paths have been very similar. They both played other sports for many years – Palmer played baseball throughout childhood while Espinoza was a competitive gymnast – and realized they could be special runners at the high-school level. Now, they are two of the state’s top runners, and both have years left to improve. Sunrise Mountain coach Scott Hereder said Palmer not only excels as an athlete, but has also become a leader for the Mustangs on and off the track. “He is great, and he’s one of my captains that has been really helpful this season,” Hereder said. “And you can see it, a lot of the other kids look up to him.” Deer Valley coach Kevin Riegle saw Espinoza’s potential as early as middle

school. Blessed with talent, Riegle is most impressed that the sophomore is one of few who have not rested on past success and train hard every day. “You don’t always see that. A lot of times the guys that come in with the most talent don’t always give it 100%. He’s a guy who we knew early could be really good, and he’s also worked for it,” Riegle said.
Espinoza had the top 3,200 time in division 2, according to AIA statistics, finishing at 9:19.80 at the Chandler Rotary Invitational in March. Palmer was right at his heels, clocking 9:20.82 at the same meet. While both runners are considered the favorites in May’s AIA Track and Field State Championships, their rivalry on the track has not caused a fractured relationship. In fact, Palmer and Espinoza are good friends, competing in many of the same events in the West Valley and attending the same church on Sundays. Observers can see the pair chatting and exchanging jokes at the starting line before races, and also cheering the other on when they are not directly competing. The two are aiming to capture the
state title, and know the other is standing in their way. The constant shadow of an equally talented and motivated rival has motivated both to keep improving. “He’s beaten me, like he did in Chandler, but having him there makes me a better runner, because I get to see what he’s doing and I have someone to compare to,” Palmer said. The same can be said for Espinoza, who sees Palmer right on his tail. “I know how hard he’s working, so I know I have to be doing the same or he’s going to beat me, and I don’t want to let that happen,” he said. Both runners feel they have not yet achieved their best times this season, and hope to vastly improve their times by the end of the semester. Both because of and despite their close friendship, Espinoza and Palmer have created a rivalry that would make winning a gold medal this season feel even sweeter. “It would be amazing if I can win at state and even better if I can beat him,” Palmer said. “But, I know he’s feeling the exact same.”

After winning three games last year, the Arizona Cardinals seemingly face one of the tougher schedules in their upcoming season. According to the National Football League’s recently released 2019 season schedule, the Cardinals will face four playoff teams from last season. And with their opponents totaling a combined 129-125-2 record, the Cardinals make for the 13th toughest schedule in the NFL. After missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season last year, the Cardinals will begin to rebuild their team this season when they open with a home game against the Detroit Lions on September 8. They will then travel to Baltimore, where they will battle the Ravens on September 15. The Cardinals will then play one “Thursday Night Football” game on ESPN against the San Francisco 49ers at State Farm Stadium October 31. Four of the Glendale-based team’s first six games will be at State Farm Stadium, but they will hit the road for four of the next five. After the home schedule ends with games against the Los Angeles Rams (December 1), Pittsburgh Steelers (December 8) and Cleveland Browns (December 15), the season will wrap up with back-to-back road games at the Seattle Seahawks on December 22 and the LA Rams on December 29. The latter marks the final regular season home game for the LA Rams at Memorial Coliseum, before they move into their new stadium in 2020.

Wade Cota edging toward win on ‘American Idol’ BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI Glendale Star Staff Writer
Wade Cota is determined to win “American Idol.” It’s not completely about the recording contract or the adulation for the Valley native, who has a residency at Tim Finnigan’s Irish Pub in Glendale. His mission is giving back to his family. “I just really want to take care of my family,” Cota said via telephone from Los Angeles where he was relaxing in a hot tub. “We struggled through everything our whole lives. I need to take care of my mom.” He very well may be on his way. On April 21, Cota made the top eight on “American Idol.” Judge Katy Perry called him “approachable and relatable” after he sang “You Got a Friend in Me”, a Disney song from “Toy Story.” “I think you did Randy Newman proud,” Perry said. A Moon Valley High School graduate, Cota admitted to “different passions” – anything but a 9-to-5 job. “He’s been writing music since he was 12 years old,” added his mother, Terri. “He left music for a little bit. He started acting in high school. My kid

He was also in a heavy metal band in high school and received several Valley accolades. His current project is his band SugarWater, and his bandmates traveled to Los Angeles to cheer him on. “He had a heck of a scream,” Terri said. “I feel that intense scream and that thrash metal voice he had as a kid ripped his vocal cords and now he has that raspy sound. He probably wouldn’t have had it if he wasn’t a metal singer first.”

That’s awesome. Knowing him for nine years, and watching the constant battle with music and being an artist, it’s amazing to watch what’s transpired.” Gill is also close with Cota’s family, saying they’re “salt of the earth, real people.” “The evolution of Wade Cota,” Gill continued. “The presence he now demands and commands when he’s playing now is second to none. He just has it. It’s unreal to watch. “He’s a true artist. He can just connect. People connect with him as a person and an artist. People feel comfortable when they listen to his voice. When he plays, people always ask when he’s going to be back. I could turn off the lights and play that music. That voice is really what they want. It has nothing to do with image and appearance. It’s that voice.”

Code Ninjas brings STEM, learning to Glendale BY CARRIE SNIDER
Glendale Star Contributing Writer
What began as a search for a place where his son could learn computer coding has turned into one local dad’s new business: Code Ninjas. “My son showed an interest in coding,” owner Vishal Bansal said. “I tried teaching him. I went through online courses. That lasted for a month. I looked for something else for him.” Bansal worked in the IT industry as a software engineer for 20 years, so he was no stranger to coding. But a lot of what he found to offer his son was too complex or just plain boring. He hoped he could find a curriculum where coding was not only educational, but fun. His search led him to Code Ninjas, a new and rapidly growing franchise based in Houston. Earlier this month Bansal officially opened the doors of his Glendale location at 20329 N. 59th Avenue, Suite 6A. Aimed at kids age 7 through 14, the martial-arts themed center is where instructors are called “code senseis,” and students are called “ninjas.” They go to the “dojo” where they advance from white belt to black belt as they learn. “Belts” at Code Ninjas are actually wristbands. “This is a learning center,” Bansal

said. “But our goal is for kids to have fun when they come here and learn while they are doing it.” The Code Ninjas tagline is “kids have fun, parents see results.” The results, Bansal added, are that the students learn code and build games. By the time a child finishes the program, they will have published an app in an App Store. Despite the Glendale center having

been open for a short time, Bansal already sees a lot of interest. A grand opening will be held on from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4. Parents and kids can tour of the new space and participate at various learning stations including Jimmy, snap circuits, Kamigami robots and drones as well as video game-building demonstrations. “I’m looking forward to making a

difference in someone’s life by providing them with skills and education that can help them in a future career,” Bansal said. “Bringing Code Ninjas to Glendale will give me the opportunity to introduce the valuable skills of coding and computer programming to all children in the community.” Founded in 2016, Code Ninjas already has 393 centers in 39 states. In the Phoenix area, there are locations in Scottsdale, Chandler and Ahwatukee, with more locations coming soon. Code Ninjas offers a flexible weeknight drop-in program, camps and Parents Night Out events on weekends. Code Ninjas founder and CEO David Graham is a professional software developer who previously owned a chain of coding camps for adults. After numerous inquiries from parents, Graham launched his business. “Parents want their children to learn the critical skills that they’ll need in the future, but it also has to be fun for kids,” Graham said. “Code Ninjas has found that sweet spot where kids have fun and parents see results, and we’re truly excited to bring our unique concept to Glendale and surrounding communities.” For more information, visit codeninjas.com.

In 2018, Wetherill was inducted into the Forbes Technology Council, and uBreakiFix earned a top spot on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list, ranking No. 18 overall, No. 1 in the Electronics Repair category, and No. 1 on the Top New Franchises list. “At uBreakiFix, our goal is to take the hassle of a broken device and create the most positive, convenient experience possible for our customers,”
Wetherill said. “We are a customer service company first and a tech repair company second. Business Briefcase BY CONNOR DZIAWURA Glendale Star Managing Editor
Hello, readers! This one’s sure to get off to a strong start. In fact, I have an update on something I may have left you hanging on a few weeks back. You may recall my mention of Artisan Olive, which leased a 660-squarefoot retail store in Greenway Promenade. Well, I can now confirm the store is open at its new location. More specifically, it’s at 5930 W. Greenway Road, Suite 25B, on the northwest corner of 59th Avenue and Greenway Road. It used to be at the Citadelle at Arrowhead. If you’re looking for fresh, ultra-premium extra virgin olive oils from around the world and balsamic vinegar from Modena, Italy, Artisan Olive is probably your kind of thing. And it’s open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
