Festival because it provides a larger area for the event to expand in future years. “It’s important to provide the Christmas lights to the Ahwatukee community with the Wine and Beer Tasting, but the community involvement is also an important part for the Festival of Lights,” said Judy Lewisohn, FOL’s treasurer. “We have two signature events where one is more of a family event and one that’s an event for the adults.” This year, the Wine and Beer

Mountain Park Community Church (MPCC) has long stood at its current location in Ahwatukee at Pecos Road and 24th Street, serving countless members of its congregation as well as the community. But now, with the planned expansion of the Loop 202 freeway, the church is being forced to move to a new location. “We’ve known that it was coming for years,” said Allan Fuller, pastor at MPCC. “We were actually relieved that a decision was finally made. We did not want to move — we love our location — but the uncertainty was holding us back.” While Fuller and members of the congregation may be sad to see the long-standing church relocate, they also have reason to be excited for the new locale and the opportunities it affords. After an expansive fundraising effort, the church broke ground on its new location at the southeast corner of 48th Street and Frye Road on April 17. The $10.7 million facility will have expanded capabilities. Funds for the project came from multiple sources including $6 mil-

Originally, the Wine and Beer Tasting Festival was hosted at the Foothills Golf Club in June, but members of the FOL committee decided to move the event to Rawhide for space accommodations. The event was also moved up to April to take advantage of cooler weather conditions. Committee members felt Rawhide was the perfect location to host the Wine and Beer Tasting

ing in families that are more rugby-centric. They also spend a significant amount of time together off the rugby field as well, hosting barbecues on Sundays that draw everyone together and bond them. “We just come down here, anyone is welcome,” Tushingham said. “Parents play, girls play…my wife comes out and plays…just trying to get people to understand the culture. We teach…it’s nice to win, it’s important to win but it’s more about the whole culture and that’s what I’m trying to get these kids to understand.” Rugby’s had a huge impact on my life both sporting wise and family wise and professionally. I’m trying to get these guys to realize that.” And some of the players are not only building their rugby family but growing into great players on the field. Students gather in a park not far from Desert Vista High School. They don’t use one of the school’s field because they aren’t yet a varsity sport; but that doesn’t mean they don’t work together or work hard. They pass and kick their oblong-shaped ball back and forth as they warm up. These players are part of the growing sport of rugby. Desert Vista has a squad which also draws students from Mountain Pointe High School. It’s all a part of the nature of the sport that’s bringing students together and building the rugby community. “These guys, they give a bit of friendly digging but the boys…it’s a great way to cross those boundaries,” said coach Roger Tushingham. As the sport continues to grow it’s not only bringing the players together, it’s also bringing their family’s together as well as drawWEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2016 | Ahwatukee Foothills News | ahwatukee.com Page 6

All-American consideration in just his first year playing the sport. “It’s a great sport, I love how it is,” he said. “(It is) very active. You’re moving a lot and you have to be very physical, too and very aggressive.” Knox acknowledges the rivalry that exists between Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe, but also said the players from both schools come together. “It’s pretty cool how two different schools — two rival schools — can come together,” Knox said. “And play as one on a team to strive for a goal that everybody wants… We come together on Sundays and play games of touch (rugby),” he said. “(The community) is more prevalent than in football. In football it’s just the players…I think it’s great because we have everybody’s family comes out and most of us have siblings so they’re coming out and watching us play and everything and they play with us, too

and learn about (rugby) at the same time.” Desert Vista’s rugby team made its first appearance in the state championship Saturday afternoon against Red Mountain, considered the top team in Arizona and a rugby powerhouse. The game didn’t go Desert Vista’s way as the Thunder lost 64-5, but even though they didn’t claim the title, their family remains unbroken, and even former players who have already graduated come back. “That’s why I came back out here,” said Jordan LeFevre, who graduated from Desert Vista last year after the game. “To be out here and put on the jersey and supporting them.” • Contact Eric Smith at 480-898-6549 or esmith@ evtrib.com. • Check us out and like the Ahwatukee Foothills News on Facebook and follow AhwatukeeFN on Twitter.

NEWS BRIEFS

Kyrene School District increases use of Blue Bird propane buses Kyrene School District, which serves Ahwatukee, now runs 85 percent of its school bus fleet on propane autogas. An on-road alternative engine fuel, propane autogas costs less than diesel, is easier to service, and reduces harmful emissions. The school district started with propane autogas in 2014 when it purchased 25 Blue Bird Vision Propane-Powered buses. This school year, Kyrene School District added 73 more. “With our Blue Bird propane autogas school bus fleet, our technicians don’t have to worry about the difficulties we encounter when servicing our diesel buses,” said Eric Nethercutt, director of transportation and facilities for Kyrene School District. “Working with propane is as easy as working on a gasoline engine.” The district’s bus drivers also have a favorable view of the propane autogas buses. “It’s a different driving experience because the bus is so quiet,” said Nethercutt. “This allows drivers to better interact and talk with students on the bus without competing with a diesel engine.” Buses fueled by propane autogas reduce noise levels by about half. Nancy Dudenhoefer, community relations

manager for the Kyrene School District, said the district is always seeking qualified bus drivers. Currently, Kyrene School District averages $1.15 per gallon for propane autogas compared with $1.50 per gallon for diesel. In addition, the school district will benefit from a 36 cents per gallon tax rebate provided by the federal government. The school district is working with its propane provider to install an onsite fuel station to further reduce the cost per gallon. Historically, propane autogas costs about 50 percent less than diesel per gallon, and a propane station costs less to install than any other fueling infrastructure.

Stanton: Phoenix is leading Arizona’s economic recovery Mayor Greg Stanton said Phoenix is “leading the way on Arizona’s economic recovery,” increasing exports to Mexico, growing the city’s bioscience and innovation sectors and creating thousands of high-paying jobs. While distracted driving touches every age group, recent data involving distraction among teen drivers have AAA and other safety advocates increasingly alarmed. Recently, AAA Arizona and Phoenix Children’s Hospital conducted focus groups of high school students and the results showed that 64 percent of drivers age 17 and older admitted to using a cell phone or texting while driving. This research emphasizes the growing concern that distracted driving among teens is a much more serious problem than previously known. Linda Gorman In a ground-breaking study, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently analyzed the six seconds leading up to a crash from nearly 1,700 crash videos of teen drivers. The results were sobering. Researchers found that distraction was a factor in nearly 6 out of 10 moderate-to-severe teen crashes, which is four times as many as previously estimated based on police reports. While these results provide evidence that teen drivers are distracted in much greater numbers than we previously realized, there are resources available to help curb these >> See SAFE DRIVING on page 9

dangers. Below are a few tips to help parents and teens navigate this journey: • Understand the role parents’ play. Studies show that crash risks are lower for teens whose parents are actively involved. Since the first 1,000 miles of unsupervised driving is the riskiest for teens, parents should be sure to stay involved during this dangerous phase. • Know the risks and set limits. State laws set requirements for teen drivers, but parents should determine driving limits and responsibilities that are right for their teens. Local MADD taking steps in right direction to curb drunk driving By Natalie Savarino AFN CONTRIBUTOR

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is taking every step in the right direction after recent statistics have shown that about two people are killed each day due to drunken driving. MADD’s Victim Services Manager Jason Frazier said DUIs can affect people in so many ways. “It breaks my heart knowing each year we have seen a trend of 200-plus fatalities, over 3,000 injuries and over 5,000 crashes due to impaired drivers.” There are consequences when someone makes a choice to drive impaired and injure or kill others on the road, Frazier said. The Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) statistics have proven that alcohol-related crashes accounted for 4.46 percent of all crashes and 33.62 percent of all fatal crashes. “MADD provides victim services and support to anyone affected by an impaired driver at no charge,” Frazier said. “These are just a few of the many reasons MADD makes a difference.” MADD was founded more than 30 years ago, and at the time more than 25,000 peo-

ple were killed in drunken driving crashes each year. Impaired driving affects everyone and it is scary to think that the two in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime, Frazier said. Arizona State University student Christie Smith said she has personally experienced losing a loved one to drunken driving. “I personally will never drive even if I have had one drink,” she said. “It’s not worth the risk, and as a result it puts too many lives in danger.” MADD also makes a difference through our many educational programs for parents, juveniles and offenders and through our wonderful victim services program, Frazier said. Since MADD was first founded, it has been able to reduce the United States’ death toll due to drunken driving in half. “This is something that can never be changed and will affect so many people because of the actions of one person and their choice,” Frazier said. According to ADOT, in 2014, children age 14 and younger accounted for 28 fatalities and 3,380 injuries in motor vehicle crashes. Tempe resident Alison Smith said she

has recently noticed more incidents due to drunk driving. “I hear of many fatal crashes due to drunk driving, especially being close to a college campus,” she said. Many ASU students have recently taken the initiative to help the community prevent DUIs. In addition, many students are joining the state’s local MADD chapter. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, every 33 minutes someone in the United States dies in an alcohol-related crash. A total of 38,252 fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes were recorded in the U.S. accounting for 42,643 fatalities. “The numbers of DUIs continue to stagger me when I review them each year,” Frazier said, adding that he feels for those who are victims of drunken driving. “We know we are winning the fight with our law enforcement partners, but one crash is too much,” Frazier said. “Any way you slice it, it is 100 percent preventable.” • Natalie Savarino is a junior at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. • Check us out and like the Ahwatukee Foothills News on Facebook and AhwatukeeFN on Twitter.

Talk1 tostyour children about prescription drugs PLACE By Allison Gilbert

BEST of Being a parent of a teen can be scary, and dramatic head2015 AFN CONTRIBUTOR

lines in the news make us feel even more worried. For example, recent media reports tell us that two teenagers handed out prescription medications at school. Thankfully, the six students who took the prescription medication are OK after being taken to the hospital, but the story could have ended very differently. Parents, children and teens need to know that taking prescription medications that aren’t prescribed to you can be very dangerous. As parents, it is so important to talk about what prescription drugs are and how a child might respond to someone who is offering prescription medications to them. Many parents don’t know how to bring this issue up to their kids, and what to say about such a serious matter. First and foremost, know that showing genuine interest in your child’s life is always the right place to start. If you don’t know how to bring up the topic, think about using the recent headline to begin the talk. Be calm and ask your child if they have heard about what happened. Explain that what happened could have been very serious and the stuAhwatukee Foothills News

dents are lucky that they will be alright. Remind your child or teen that prescription medications are only for the person to whom they are prescribed, and that only that person should take the prescribed amount. Prescription medications can hurt and even kill someone who shouldn’t take it or someone who takes it improperly. Let your child know that you are here for them, and that you want the best for them. Listen to their concerns about this issue, and praise your child for listening to you. Offer them the chance to use you as an excuse to get themselves out of a bad situation — for example, if they’re offered a prescription drug, they can say, “my mom wouldn’t let me play soccer anymore if I did that.” You might find out your child has been offered prescription medication before. If they were, and they turned it down, praise them for coming to talk to you. You can’t control how many scary headlines appear on the evening news. But you can make it clear that prescription medications can be dangerous. And, with sincere and open communication, you can prepare your child to say no. • Allison Gilbert, MPH, is injury prevention specialist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. MOM INTERRUPTED

Someday there’ll be an app for that By Elizabeth Evans AFN CONTRIBUTOR

Kids, I know you like your technology. Everywhere I go, I see you with your noses buried in a Snapchat or an Instagram or whatever it was that replaced the thing that replaced Facebook which became obsolete the day I ruined it by signing up. But kids, gather round and hear a cautionary tale about the day my gadgets ganged up on me. The day started like any other day. I used my alarm clock and blow dryer and microwave without incident. And that was the last help I got from technology that day. So I’m sitting at my desk at work, happily creating spreadsheets and databases and writing a report. I reach for a file folder behind my desk and my bra starts buzzing. It’s because the posture tracker I’ve clipped to my bra has detected that I’m slouching. Yes, I’ve invested in a doohickus that channels my ninth-grade gym teacher and reminds me not to stoop, dear. That’s not so bad, but my fitness tracker picked that second to chirp at me because it was 8:50 a.m. and I’ve asked it to channel Jillian Michaels and remind me to get up and move every hour, lest I die from my sedentary desk job. So I was walking in place at my desk when Dad, Interrupted started texting me just then

about how he’d lost the password to the thermostat and could I turn on the air conditioning at the house. From my desk. At work. So not only did the text cause my phone to sing a little song at me, it made my fitness tracker, which also displays my text messages, pitch a fit until I tapped it and told it that everything was just fine, thank you. That’s why I was able to catch the phone call telling me that the alarm system was going off at the house and could I please remember my password for the nice monitoring system lady? Even so, all that would have been manageable if my doorbell hadn’t rung at that precise instant. Say what? My doorbell? Yes. If you make like Anita Ward and ring my bell, I can answer it from anywhere in the world. So at that moment I literally had a party in, if not my pants, then the near neighborhood, what with my bra buzzing and my wrist blinking at me and my husband wanting the air conditioning on. I have a gadget that will answer a text while I’m driving, a refrigerator magnet that orders groceries, and a waffle iron. And I don’t even want to know how a waffle iron will seek its revenge. Just wait: someday there’ll be an app for that. • Ahwatukee Foothills resident Elizabeth Evans can be reached at elizabethann40@hotmail.com.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

The creative power of resilience By Kathy Brown AFN CONTRIBUTOR

deal with, however unfair that might be. • Care for and nurture ourselves. Beating up on ourselves serves no one. When we practice self-care, not selfishness, we learn to be gentle with ourselves and others. • Let go of the past. The past is now just a memory, and our focus needs to be on and in the present moment. This is where we learn to move forward in optimism and hope. • Develop support systems. Friends and family are often a good source of comfort, but include professional support when circumstances become too difficult. • Remember that everything in life changes. Both good times and bad times come and go. We can relish the joys and handle the sorrows, and accept everything else in between. Resilience is a relentlessness to never quit, never give up. And even though the difficult challenges that occur in our lives are not what we would readily choose, at least we know that we can courageously decide to grow from them, creating a better self and a better life.

No one gets through this life without challenges. We all have them. Some may seem easier or worse than others, but that is really quite subjective. Some say that if all of our problems were thrown into a pot, and we were able to select the ones we wanted, we would more than likely reclaim our own. Nevertheless, we do not have the option to pick out new ones. But we do have the option to learn how to deal with our problems and even transcend them. When we are in the midst of pain that results from the circumstances in our lives, it is often difficult to see an end to our suffering. When they don’t, we often resort to denial, defensiveness, blaming, withdrawing or any other means to make the pain stop. Ultimately, though, we know that the only way out is through. Developing the quality of resilience empowers us to move forward in our lives, even amidst our pain. When we can’t change the circumstances in our life, we can change out attitude and perception of them. Here are a few suggestions: • Accept responsibility for our circumstances, not necessarily blame. Regardless of how our problems got here, they are ours to

Phoenix Sky Harbor is an important economic engine for region, state By Greg Stanton GUEST CONTRIBUTOR

P

hoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is one of the region’s — and the state’s — most important economic engines. Over the past decade, we have invested millions of dollars to modernize its infrastructure, including building the Sky Train to connect passengers directly to light rail. To make sure visitors can get to and from the airport with ease, though, we have to do more than update our infrastructure; it’s critical that we also update our policies to reflect today’s market. That means making sure that passengers can access ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft both to and from the airport. In modernizing our policy, though, it’s essential that we make sure that these services accommodate every passenger, including those with disabilities.

That’s why our City Council and leaders in the Phoenix disability community came together to make improvements to our airport’s Ground Transportation Policy. On March 1, we approved a new policy that includes the nation’s strongest requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The updated policy allows ride-sharing services — including Uber and Lyft — to pick up passengers at the airport. It also now ensures that travelers with disabilities can arrange to be picked up at the airport with wheelchair-accessible vehicles, including from popular ride-sharing services, within 30 minutes. This improved policy will make Sky Harbor the largest airport in the country to require every transportation provider to make arrangements for those in the disability community. This isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s responsible business. Disability travel is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and mem-

bers of this community who arrive at our airport should not just be handed a list of phone numbers in hopes that they’ll somehow find transportation. Other advocates and leaders in the disability community have weighed in on the City Council’s action. Jennifer Longdon, former chair of the Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues and member of the State Independent Living Council of Arizona said, “Accessibility is critical for everyone. I logged over 75,000 air miles in the last year alone, and people with disabilities represent more than $17 billion in travel and entertainment, and we need all of that here in Phoenix. We just had a disability conference in January where we used 600 room nights at the Sheraton downtown, and it went so well that we’ve been asked to host it again. This ground transportation policy can only be good for the entire

community, and especially for people with disabilities.” Phil Pangrazio, president and CEO of Ability360, said of the proposal, “Although I think Uber, Lyft and any ride share business should be required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provide comparable accessible service to people with disabilities wherever they operate, I think requiring them to meet the needs of disabled air travelers at Sky Harbor Airport is a commendable action by the city of Phoenix.” Great cities are home to as many transportation options as possible: cars, buses, light rail, ride-share services, and someday even self-driving cars. We’re preparing now to make sure that innovations in transit are available to every Phoenix resident. • Greg Stanton was first elected mayor of Phoenix in 2011. He was relected to a second term as mayor on Aug. 25, 2015.

Following the state government spending trail online By Diane E. Brown GUEST CONTRIBUTOR

A

s taxpayers, our attention to government spending is typically peaked this time of year. The good news is that Arizona and every other state offers at least a basic website for accessing information about state government spending, and many states now provide citizens with sophisticated and user-friendly online platforms for searching through that data. The Arizona PIRG Education Fund’s annual Following the Money report highlights how states collectively present hundreds of billions of dollars of state spending in great detail online and increasingly provide information on state expenditures that occur indirectly or through “off-budget” government entities and county and municipal entities. Government spending transparency websites give citizens and government officials the ability to monitor many aspects of state spending in order to save taxpayers money, realize more efficient government administration, enjoy more competitive bidding for public projects, and spend less staff time on

information requests. Transparency websites also help citizen watchdogs and journalists ensure that government contractors and vendors deliver goods or services at a reasonable price, and allow for public scrutiny of economic development subsidies. Best practices for government spending transparency calls for websites that are comprehensive, one-stop and one-click. • Comprehensive transparency websites offer broad and detailed spending information, and help citizens answer three key questions: how much does the government spend on particular goods and services, which companies receive public funds for goods and services, and what results are achieved by specific expenditures? Topflight transparency websites empower citizens to answer questions for every major category of state spending including subsidies such as tax credits for economic development, quasi-public agencies, and leases and concessions to private companies. • With one-stop transparency, residents and public officials can access comprehensive information on direct spending, contracts, tax expenditures and other subsi-

dies from a single starting point. One-stop transparency is particularly important for public oversight of subsidies which come in a dizzying variety of forms — including direct cash transfers, loans, equity investments, contributions of property or infrastructure, reductions or deferrals of taxes or fees, guarantees of loans or leases, and preferential use of government facilities. • States that follow the best transparency standards allow residents to browse information by recipient, agency or category, to make directed keyword and field searches and to easily download and sort data with a single click of the mouse. When it comes to making the state’s spending transparent online, Arizona has made great strides. However, to keep step with providing information that can improve efficiency, save money for taxpayers and foster public confidence in government, Arizona needs to pick up the pace and provide data for economic development subsidies. While Arizona provides comprehensive information about its largest economic development subsidy, the Arizona Competes Fund, the

state doesn’t provide the same level of data for its other large subsidy programs. To learn more, please go to arizonapirgedfund.org and download “Following the Money 2016: How the 50 States Rate in Providing Online Access to Government Spending Data.” Arizona’s transparency website is openbooks.az.gov. • Diane E. Brown is executive director of the Arizona PIRG Education Fund, which conducts research and education on issues in the public interest.

oldie is estimated to be about a year old. She’s a domestic short-haired calico tabby cat who rescued herself from being a stray with no home. A jogger ran by Goldie and she followed the jogger for about a mile, not letting him get away without helping her. She was in an area where there were hiking trails but not a lot of homes. It isn’t known how she ended up being in such a remote area but she had had enough and latched on to someone she hoped would help her. The jogger brought Goldie home and is fostering her until adoption. Goldie is not a big fan of sharing her space with other animals so she’s hoping for a home where she can rule the roost and give all her love to her people. COMMUNITY

Voters: Thieves in our neighborhood Recognize your power Did you consider when you stole after midnight the morning of April 4, what to you was just a bench, that what you took from a family and a community were memories and a chronicle of lives? That bench was given to us by the city of Phoenix for the furthering of Neighborhood Block Watch and crime prevention efforts. On it there is a plaque commemorating those efforts. This bench was used by visiting neighbors, children anxiously waiting for the school bus that stops each morning, and it was the halfway point for seniors, past and present, to visit and finish their daily walk. We passed out Halloween candy from that bench, we sat with our neighbors during the annual Chili Cookoff, we sang Christmas carols from there during the Winter Solstice Celebration. Our 8-year-old granddaughter waves to people coming home from work, and through her tears she asks, “Nana, why did they take our family? Where will we sit?” Friends hugged her as she cried. Please consider the hurt you caused and return this treasured bench to us. There will be no questions asked. Perhaps, you just didn’t consider the big picture. Nelson L. Holcomb and Constance M. The Republican-led Legislature’s dislike of voter approved measures and their intent to eliminate them is nakedly visible with four bills introduced this session to reduce citizen powers. • HCR2043 would allow a Legislature to revoke a voter passed measure — exactly the reason we passed the Voter Protection Act in 2008. • HCR2023 would lower the obstacles for legislators to repeal the voters’ intent and put more hurdles in the way of voters getting their wishes on the ballot in the first place. • HCR2024 would require a super majority of voters to pass an initiative. • HCR2047 would require 25 percent of the signatures to come from rural counties. Thus it is clear that the legislators fear the voters. Call your legislators today to make it clear they work for US. CJ Briggle

SPIRITUAL SIDE

Month of mourning ends, shadow of loss remains By Rabbi Dean Shapiro AFN CONTRIBUTOR

I

got my hair cut the other day, as I have countless times. It was no big deal for the barber—just another head in the chair, No. 2 on sides and back, finger length on top. But it was significant for me. I hadn’t cut my hair since before my stepmother’s funeral. During the 30 days of mourning that followed, known as shloshim, I observed the Jewish tradition not to cut my hair. With each passing day, I saw my hair grow longer and grayer. It didn’t bother me at first. But then I grew uncomfortable with my appearance, of looking like a man who didn’t care. My external appearance came to reflect the sense of disorder within me. Each time I looked in the mirror, I was reminded that things were not as they were supposed to be: not just my hair, of course, but in my father’s life especially. His beloved companion, with whom he was supposed to travel the remainder of his days, had left him behind. We were

lost and uncertain just what to do next, out at sea without a compass. I was beginning to look like a bedraggled sailor. As I sat in the barber’s chair, I thought of all the experiences this month of mourning had brought me. I had talked about grief with our older Religious School students, and remembered their thoughtful consideration of the feelings of loss: “relief, orphaned, empty, regret, thankful, helpless, numb, unfinished, lonely, overwhelmed, heavy, closed off, confused.” I had felt all of those. I recalled officiating at another funeral, and staring at a coffin just like my stepmother’s, reeling as I contemplated the unbounded loss that the sealed box represents. I thought about the drawn-out bureaucracy of getting my name added to a safe-deposit box, and the bags of clothes we’ve hauled away. And, most poignant of all, as the clippers cut away a month’s growth, I felt myself standing once again with my father at his wife’s fresh grave, exactly 30 days after she was laid to rest. In that place, boundary of grass patch still visible, I tried to intuit what my father was feeling. I pondered

the depths of darkness in the soil below, and wondered what was happening to the memories of all we had shared, my stepmother and me. And I felt the enormousness of the truth that all roads lead here. In Biblical and Prophetic times, the Nazarite was a person who voluntarily dedicated himself or herself to God. For an amount of time they themselves determined, Nazarites would refrain from consuming grapes or wine, and from cutting their hair. I now understand better what a constant reminder their growing locks were to them. With every turn of the head, they’d remember the promise they’d made. Like the mourner, they were set apart from all others, all those who think that today is like any other day, and who live under the mistaken notion that this day is like tomorrow will be. Both the Nazarite and the mourner know that nothing lasts forever. My hair is back to normal. Our life, however, is not. • Rabbi Dean Shapiro is the spiritual leader of Temple Emanuel of Tempe. Business Team Orthodontics’ 5-star service sustains company in competitive industry By Srianthi Perera

F Av inan ai ci la ng bl e

t used to be that a dentist or orthodontist could hang out their shingle and start seeing patients without further ado. “Those days are gone, they are long gone; so you have to think a lot differently,” said Dr. Ken Danyluk, owner of Team Orthodontics in Ahwatukee Foothills and Gilbert. The industry has changed, and it’s not just with respect to more advanced treatment options. The biggest change has been in the actual business of developing the practice. “It has become much more competitive; as a result, we have to wear an additional hat of a businessman,” Danyluk said. Undaunted, the Canadian transplant – he came to the Valley from Winnipeg, Manitoba, with wife Jacquie in 2000 – began thinking out of the box. That thinking has sustained the practice he established, first in Ahwatukee Foothills in 2002 and then in Gilbert in 2007. “The biggest thing for me is continuing education,” Danyluk said, “seeking out the best in the world to try and become the best that you can be.” This led him to lingual (hidden) braces, a method to straighten teeth in an

undetectable way. The technique, which involves fitting braces behind the teeth, is much more difficult to learn, hence the paucity of orthodontists offering it and correspondingly, its relative lack of popularity, Danyluk said. Danyluk made contact with one of the most prominent practitioners of the technique, who happened to be from Tokyo, Japan. A few months ago, after two years of communicating with the Japanese orthodontist, Danyluk visited him in his clinic. “I learned more in two days than I could have sitting in a classroom trying to learn it.” Danyluk has been offering lingual orthodontics for more than a decade, and has treated about 2,000 people, representing about 15 percent of his clientele. His supplier of lingual orthodontics brackets deems Danyluk to have the largest practice for the technique in North America, he said. Because of his familiarity with it and the fact that he doesn’t spend too much more time than he would with outside braces, the cost is nearly the same, the orthodontist said. Danyluk didn’t set out to specialize in lingual or other type of orthodontics. After practicing for a number of years and start-

ing to learn more about orthodontics, he realized that it fits his personality. “It’s very analytical, yet there’s an artistic side to it,” Danyluk said. “It’s a very personable profession – you spend a lot of time speaking to people as opposed to taking care of teeth. It’s right up my alley.” Another distinctive aspect of Team Orthodontics is its “five-star” customer service. “It’s a phrase that’s thrown around,” Danyluk said. “But we’ve worked really hard over the years ensuring that every person gets individualized treatment experience, not just with what’s in their mouth but how we take care of them.” Realizing that orthodontics takes an antiquated view of customer service, Danyluk trains his 18-strong staff with no less than consultants from the hotel industry. Other attentions include a school shuttle service he began in 2003 so that working parents can still get their children transported to appointments (without an extra charge), the availability of Saturday appointments and no-interest payment plans. The company sends out regular surveys, “asking those hard questions,” to find out any holes in the practice. “So we look into the mir-

ror a lot,” Danyluk said. “We work at it constantly at a team level. I think that’s what sets us apart.” Team Orthodontics has offices in Ahwatukee Foothills and Gilbert and Danyluk sees about 1,500 patients each month. • Contact Srianthi Perera at 480-898-5613 or srianthi@timespublications.com. • Check us out and like the Ahwatukee Foothills News on Facebook and follow AhwatukeeFN on Twitter.

Gardening in Ahwatukee Foothills during late spring By Kelly Athena AFN CONTRIBUTOR

Did you know that the official Arizona state tree produces delicious beans that taste like fresh peas? The palo verde tree (genera cercidium), consisting of an entirely green-colored trunk, branches and twigs, was designated our state tree in 1954. The bean pods can be picked in early May while the beans are young and sweet. They look and taste similar to edamame. The beans consist of 32

percent protein, more than most dairy products and similar to meat protein content without the fat, cholesterol, and GMOs. After two weeks of optimum sweetness, the beans over-ripen into starchy, less sweet-tasting beans. The Pima and Papago people (Tohono O’odham) of our area relied on the desert palo verde, mesquite, and ironwood bean trees as nutritious staples for centuries up to World War II when their diet began changing to the processed American foods. At this time, about 51 percent of the Gila River Indian Community have the health challenge of Type 2 di-

abetes because of this diet change. I will be presenting “How to Harvest a Palo Verde Tree” at the Ironwood Library on Thursday, April 28, from 6-7 p.m. The public is invited to attend. I will bring steamed palo verde beans for you to try, and a lot of interesting information about the desert environment of Ahwatukee. There are two kinds of palo verde trees native to our area. The first to bloom is the Blue Palo Verde, the tall trees used by landscapers in our area. They line the streets and neighborhoods >> See GARDENING on page RE 2

HARP expires at the end of 2016. Refinancing your mortgage and locking in a lower interest rate is a great way to lower your monthly mortgage payment. However, in the past, homeowners who had little to no equity in their home were out of luck when it came to refinancing. In an attempt to make loans more affordable for these homeowners and curb the rate of foreclosures, the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) was introduced in 2009. Although the program eliminated some traditional refinancing requirements, many eligible homeowners haven’t taken advantage of this hugely beneficial program. HARP will be in place until the end of 2016, making now the perfect time to take advantage of this “free” money and refinance your mortgage. Here is some more information to help you decide if refinancing with HARP is right for you. HARP covers loans owned by Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae and caters to homeowners who are current on their payments but have a loan-to-value ratio that is equal to or greater than 80 percent. In addition, the home in question must be either a primary residence, a one-unit second home, or a one- to four-unit investment property. HARP should be the first choice for homeowners with a loan that is more than seven years old with low equity and a higher interest rate. “HARP provides premium rates to homeowners in difficult mortgage situations, who have lower credit scores, specifically for those with little or no equity at all.” While earlier versions of HARP excluded homeowners who were underwater on their mortgages (with a loan-to-value ratio of more than 125 percent), a 2012 update and the release of HARP 2.0 eliminated this exclusion. Estimates made by the Federal Housing Finance Agency are that as of June 2015, 429,379 American homeowners are still eligible for HARP. With eligibility requirements becoming increasingly watered down

since its 2009 inception, taking advantage of this program is relatively simple and too good to overlook. If you are one of the thousands of homeowners eligible for HARP, the next step is to determine how you would benefit from enrollment. Thanks to government backing, HARP offers refinancing rates that are at or below rates conventionally applied to loans with 20 percent equity, and there are no credit score requirements. HARP also allows you to add closing costs into your new loan. Both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac allow up to 4 percent of the loan balance to be added in as closing costs, and Freddie Mac also allows $5,000 (whichever amount is less). For many homeowners, this means no out-of-pocket closing costs. Some homeowners have benefited from lower payments with HARP mortgage rates; a half-percent lower than a regular refinance. For most HARP loans, the appraisals were waived and the costs were lower as well. You might also be able to save by eliminating mortgage insurance and getting a new low rate, saving hundreds each month. Another great feature is that some borrowers will not need to bring any money to closing. With housing prices on the rise and the number of underwater mortgages on the decline, the HARP program will officially stop on Dec. 31. If you want to take advantage of this program and refinance before it’s too late, here’s how to get started. Gather your loan information and determine whether you’re eligible. If you have a loan with Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac that was originated on or before May 31, 2009, and your loan-to-value ratio is greater than 80 percent, you could be a great HARP candidate. Gather up your loan documentation for the next steps. Call your mortgage company to see if they are an approved HARP lender. If they are not, you’ll need to find one who works with Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae. The HARP website has tips for how to find an approved HARP lender.

of Ahwatukee and put on a brilliant display of bright yellow flowers in March, and continuing into April, when their flowers begin to give way to flat, smooth-edged green pods. The Foothills Palo Verdes can be found everywhere in South Mountain Park. They are hardier, scrubbier trees, growing to usually only 15 feet. They are slower growing and live up to 400 years. One of their five petals is white, so the yellow foliage is not as bright and rich as the Blue Palo Verde. Their pods curve tightly around each bean, giving them a scalloped edge. The Foothills Palo Verde produces the sweetest beans by far. I have enjoyed harvesting and eating the palo verde beans for many years. I wear thick gloves and long sleeves to pick the green pods and let them fall onto a thick plastic tarp spread on the ground. One 15-foot-tall Foothills Palo Verde tree may produce more than 1,000 delicious pods. The pods should be eaten, frozen or blanched the same day they are picked to prevent moldering. The best way I have found to preserve the beans to enjoy all year is by using a food vacuum sealer that keeps in the freshness and texture of the pod.

Other spring garden information

Hula hoes are great for ridding your yard of all the little weeds that pop up after our

spring and monsoon rains. They are available for approximately $15 at our local hardware stores. It is safer, easier, cheaper and more effective than spraying weeds with poison that disturbs the whole ecosystem. Just scrape the hoe over the weed, which will remove it by its roots. Look for a demonstration video of the hula hoe at our website, ACGarden.org. • Now is the time to plant beans, corn, squash, cucumber, okra and a desert favorite: Malabar Spinach. This spinach has succulent leaves and likes to vine up sticks, poles, trellises and other plants. It can be started by tiny seeds or by a small cutting. It is a hardy and quick grower, thriving in the summer heat, and likes to grow in pots. Come by the Ahwatukee Community Garden any Sunday between 8:15 and 9:15 a.m. to get your free start of Malabar Spinach. Also take home some Blue African basil, chard and other goodies we are growing. We are located right behind the Farmer’s Market, at 4700 E. Warner Road. Park near the market and walk north through the playground to the garden. Newcomers will enjoy a tour of the garden and enjoy the thriving Farmer’s Market from 9 a.m. 1 p.m., filled with local foods and crafts. • Ahwatukee Foothills resident Kelly Athena is an Arizona University Extension Master Gardener and Ahwatukee Community Garden Project member.

Tasting Festival will sponsor both the Girls Rule Foundation, which empowers young teens through educational workshops, and YMCA’s Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors (Y OPAS), a foundation that provides free services to seniors in Ahwatukee. Lewisohn said events such as the Red, White and Boom Fireworks Festival, the Holiday Kick-Off Party, the Ahwatukee Eas-

ter Parade and the Wine and Beer Tasting Festival make Ahwatukee. “It’s kind of a cultural thing that we do here in Ahwatukee, and I think what we do is part of that,” Lewisohn said. Janyce Hazlett, president of the FOL committee, said over the years the Wine and Beer Tasting Festival has become a staple event in Ahwatukee. “It’s a way to bring the community together so they can have a really good time,” Hazlett said. The 21st annual Festival of Lights Wine and Beer Tasting Festival will occur this Saturday, April 30, from 6:30-10:30 p.m., at Rawhide, 5700 W. North Loop Road. lion from the sale of the old church, congregation members pledging $2.8 million, and the remaining amount coming in the form of a mortgage. “We had to make a shift that has really poured through the whole church that we get to move,” Fuller said. “There’s some advantages to this and we are very excited about the new design and about the opportunities that are now in front of us.” Among the new amenities, the 48,000-square-foot project will feature a full-service café along with a rooftop terrace that can be used for weddings, classes and community gatherings. “We want to take advantage of the beau-

tiful weather we have here and the beautiful views over South Mountain,” Fuller said. “About 5,000 square feet is on the third floor as an open space that will overlook the mountain that will be used for weddings, or gatherings, or yoga, different ways that we can use that.” The hope is that the new facility will overlook the city and act as a welcoming sight. “Now we will be at a place — like the sentinel is how we’re looking at it — we’re like the entrance into Ahwatukee,” said Valerie Sanders, an active member of the congregation. “It’s going to be awesome. It’s going to be a lot of the things that we wanted in the church are going to be there now.” • Contact Eric Smith at 480-898-6549 or esmith@ evtrib.com. • Check us out and like the Ahwatukee Foothills News on Facebook and follow AhwatukeeFN on Twitter.

ith aerial bartenders, craft liquors to sample and demonstrations, the 3-year-old Chandler Craft Spirits Festival is moving to Ocotillo to enhance the experience. “In previous years, we were in downtown Chandler and now we have moved the event to downtown Ocotillo and will feature an indoor/ outdoor venue with a VIP area overlooking the lake,” said Tiffany Shultz, event producer. The event, set for 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 30, celebrates

enthusiasts’ enjoyment of craft liquors, including bourbon, vodka and tequila while providing a fine mix of wine, beer and assorted cocktails. Activities range from demonstrations and seminars to aerial bartenders. “We have also invited top bartenders in the state to participate in a variety of demos,” said Shultz. There will be numerous entertainment opportunities and a designated VIP area offering guests access to perks. Patrons will also be treated to a delicious assortment of food options. “Attendees can expect a variety of food from small plates to full menus. We have food trucks and local

restaurants,” she said. “In addition, we have partnered with San Marcos hotel to offer a full experience. The San Marcos food will be featured in our VIP area.” Of course the craft liquors are at the forefront of the festival and this year’s edition offers an even greater roster of alcohol artisans. “We are so excited that we have many new local distilleries that will be involved in the event this year including: Caskworks, Hamilton, Arizona Distilling and O.H.S.O. But we have also invited boutique distilleries from across the region,” Shultz said. “We will have a judging

panel of industry people come out from 3:30 to 4 p.m. to select a winner in several categories.” Jon Lane, owner of O.H.S.O. Eatery + Brewery + Distillery, said he is excited about participating. “We are just getting started in Arizona, most (distilleries) are under 5 years old and making high quality products already,” he said. “Arizona has already done well in national competitions and soon you will see us grow dramatically in state and national. We are just beginning.” Attendance for the event is expected to be robust with about 3,000 visitors attending, according to Shultz. Patrons will be contributing to a great cause as they imbibe— Southwest Human Development, a nonprofit dedicated to early childhood development serving 135,000 children and their families. “We’re excited to be teaming up with the Chandler Craft Spirits Festival to help create greater awareness of the importance of early childhood development and raise funding for these critical programs and services in our community,” said Jake Adams, chief development officer for Southwest Human Development. “This year’s festival is going to feature so many great tastings, demonstrations, food, music and more, and we can’t think of a more fun way for the community to come together to support Arizona kids and their families.” Shultz sees exciting future for the festival. “We see the event growing and supporting more and more local distilleries as they open up,” she said. “We love to support local distilleries, breweries and our local wineries.” • Contact the editor at 480-898-5612 or christina@ timespublications.com. • Check us out and like GetOutA on Facebook and follow GetOutAZ on Twitter

Echosmith finds its own identity By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski GETOUT

E

chosmith’s song “Cool Kids” carries the message of self worth and self acceptance. But sometimes, lead singer Sydney Sierota said, it’s hard to subscribe to that belief. Her band — which includes her brothers Jamie, Noah and Graham — has toured for three years, mostly on its 2013 debut album “Talking Dreams,” and announced in the fall that it’s going on a break to record a new collection. The three years have been educational. “I think learning that having your own identity is a big deal,” Sierota said. “There are so many other artists and bands out there. It’s easy to feel like, ‘Man, maybe I should try avoiding that kind of music because that’s working. Or maybe I should look like this.’ “Naturally, in this world, you’re going to compare yourself to others. That does relate to the message of ‘Cool Kids.’ It’s funny because we’re finding that we relate to the song more so now than when we wrote it.” Sierota said she and her brothers have continued to learn self-acceptance over the last three years. “It’s important to be yourself,” she said. “That what people really fall in love with. That’s what they connect to.” But Sierota said her profession isn’t any different than others. “Every profession has its own differences and challenges,” she said. “In the end, I’m

not complaining, but everybody has their thing and their stuff they have to deal with and work through and address in their personal life and professional life. I think everyone goes through it. There are plenty [of] things that people have to deal with in this industry and a lot more maybe sometimes.” Echosmith’s profession brings it to Chipotle Mexican Grill’s free Cultivate Festival at WestWorld from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Saturday, April 30. Young the Giant and Lukas Graham are among the other acts slated to perform throughout the day. Arizona shows are meaningful for the California-based band. “I love Arizona. Plus, we have family there,

and that makes it even better — my grandparents, a few of our cousins and aunts and stuff. There are quite a few people, actually.” The family has shared in Echosmith’s success, which includes three hits — “Cool Kids,” “Let’s Love” and “Bright.” Echosmith hopes to replicate that success on a forthcoming album. “Lots has happened to us in life, and musically I hope we’ve improved,” Sierota said with a laugh. “It’ll be interesting to see what comes out.” Those experiences include being a surprise guest during two of Taylor Swift’s shows. “Taylor’s super sweet and obviously talented,” she said. “It was a great experience

both times that we did it. It was really cool. Her crowds are so excited and they scream louder than you’ve ever heard. She’s a great person and to have that opportunity is great. I’m really thankful that she wanted us to sing with her on her tour. She could have asked anybody. It’s something we’ll never forget.” Perhaps her biggest thrill was playing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” “That was a big step for us,” she said with a smile that transcended the phone line. “That was always on our bucket list. We would watch it every night. It was such a dream come true. “It’s hard to determine which are the biggest deals out of the three years of doing things. I would say playing ‘The Tonight Show’ was probably the biggest one.” But she admits to being uneasy on TV stages. “I don’t normally get nervous,” she said. “But I’m nervous for TV performances. It’s live and, well, a normal show is live, too. But you’re only playing one song. It’s not a normal concert setting. “The crowd isn’t right in your face. It’s completely different. They’re having to act cordial because they’re on TV. It’s a really interesting environment.” That hearkens back to her comments about insecurity. “Over the three years, I did need to have my own identity and try not to find it in anybody else’s opinion of you.” • Contact Christina Fuoco-Karasinski at 480-8985612 or christina@timespublications.com. • Check us out and like the GetOutAZ on Facebook and GetOutAZ on Twitter.

Can a child with 20/20 vision still struggle with homework? Surprisingly, the answer is yes. Even with 20/20 vision, a child may lack the visual skills necessary for effective close work such as reading and computer use. If your bright child seems to be struggling call us to schedule a comprehensive learning-related eye exam.

Desert Vista coach Stan Luketich has been molding ballplayers into young men for 40 years, the last 20 at Desert Vista. [David Jolkovski/AFN]

The timeless game

DV’s Luketich honored for 40 years in prep baseball By Jason P. Skoda AHWATUKEE FOOTHILLS NEWS

The interaction might have been a little awkward, but at the same time it showed a side of Stan Luketich that has been prevalent for 40 years, which was the reason for celebration in the first place. In other words, Luketich’s self-deflecting moment was when the microphone was in his hand and the spotlight was focused on his career instead of his Thunder team. Coach Luke, as he is mostly known, wanted no part of Wednesday’s postgame ceremony to celebrate his 20th year at Desert Vista and 40th overall on the diamond. And everyone understood.

Page 38

“He only wants attention to be focused on the players,” Desert Vista athletic director T.J. Snyder said. “I’ll probably get punched later for putting him in that position.” Through it all Luketich, who received a memory with inscriptions from players and coaches dating back to the first Thunder team, was appreciative of the effort put forth, the kind words said and the appearance of former player and coaches who “I knew some players were coming back,” he said. “That’s all I knew. I’ll enjoy it at some point but I am still coaching.” And Luketich has no plans on retiring anymore than he will share stories of how he coached in the Yankees system, has been

the manager for Spain, Belgian and Czech Republic national teams through the MLB Envoy program, which helps baseball organizations around the world that want help organizing and teaching baseball within their program, or the numerous awards he has won like the ABCA Ethic in Coaching Award. It leaves it up to others to speak up about what it means to work with, be coached by, or compete against the man who started out at Casa Grande Junior High in 1975. “He is such a great coach, and we’ve had so much fun over the years,” Mountain Pointe coach Brandon Buck said. “It’s been great for me to watch him and learn from him, and you don’t say that very often.”

Luketich moved on to Moon Valley where he stayed for 16 years, which included a state title in 1989, until 1993. After two years as an assistant at Red Mountain, he took over Desert Vista and had immediate success as the Thunder won state titles in 1999 and 2001. The success at the state level hasn’t been what it was in the early years, but Luketich keeps churning out young men who are prepared for whatever lies ahead. “We have a lot of good athletes who were better workers,” he said. “The kids today aren’t the same as 20 years ago, but they all wanted to work. That’s what I will remember.” One of those kids in the early days was pitcher Ryan Coffin, who was on the mound when the Thunder won the state title in 1999. “It’s pretty surreal coming back,” Coffin said. “We had the squad back then. We lived for baseball. It was great having someone like (Luketich) corralling all of us. We had a lot of pressure and we obviously couldn’t have done it without him.” Luketich’s short statement, where he essentially dropped the mike after thanking everyone from coming out on a hot day, was another teachable moment. “You heard him with his speech,” Coffin said. “There is always a lesson and a point in everything he does. He taught us to be men and he taught us how to win the right way.” The closest Luketich came to giving thanks and reflecting on all that he has accomplished — before shaking everyone’s hands and return to mending the infield dirt, where each speck of dirt seemingly has a place — was admitting how much he enjoyed seeing all the former Thunder players come back. “I’ve had great kids every year,” he said. “It’s great to see them. We have guys come back all the time to practice or a game. They just come in the dugout. “It is home and I want it to always be their home.” • Contact Jason Skoda at 480-898-7915 or jskoda@ awhwatukee.com. Net gains

Parity, momentum to define volleyball postseason By Jason P. Skoda AHWATUKEE FOOTHILLS NEWS

Ryan Tolman was either being self-depreciating or the Desert Vista boys volleyball coach is too close to the situation to realize where the Thunder rank heading into the final week of the regular season. “This is one of the first years in my 13 years where there’s not a top tier,” Tolman said. “There’s Boulder Creek and then there’s 10 teams down below there that can give you a game.” Tolman is correct that Boulder Creek is seen as the favorite — when healthy — but the Thunder are the only Arizona team to beat the Jaguars this season. The Thunder (22-7) topped Boulder Creek 3-0 on April 11, but the Jaguars were without outside hitter Liam Santa Cruz. Boulder Creek (36-2) won the other two meetings in tournament play and was dominating throughout the season. The Thunder, ranked No. 1 in the power rankings entering the final three matches, has had struggles with other teams as they have a 2-2 record against Gilbert and split matches versus Deer Valley and Sandra Day O’Connor. It validates the general sentiment that this could be the most wide open postseason in a long time, and the fact that the right seeding placement is even more vital as in being on the opposite side of Boulder Creek is crucial. Seton Catholic and Cienega seem destined to meet up in the title game with a couple of outliers like Horizon Honors and Marana Mountain View possibly being in the mix in Division II. “It’s a real strong year for the East Valley,” Mountain View coach Kevin Powell said. “Everybody plays hard. It’s going to take a lot of poise. Once you get on the bigger stage of the playoffs a bad stretch for the better team can turn into a loss quickly. Mountain View lost a hotly contested match to Corona del Sol last week that showed how much parity there is this year. It went five sets with Corona winning the final set 15-13 even though the Aztecs were fighting for a top five seed, while the Toros are expected to make the tournament as a double-digit seed. “There is so much parity it is going to be

a lot of fun this year,” Corona coach Geoff Horewitch said. “Once you are in the tournament everything gets magnified and you can turn around a match with one big point.” The regular season winds down through the first week of May before the first round on May 7 with Division I and II finals on May 14 at Mesquite. Seton Catholic, which was 25-3 through Tuesday, has taken advantage of the second division being added this year. The Sentinels won their first-round playoff match as the 17th seed last year but were swept away by No. 1 Hamilton in the second round when there was only one division. Now they are the top team behind a strong senior class as Seton Catholic attempts to finish the final week as the No. 1 seed. “From the first day this has been our goal,” second-year coach Nick Price said. “We struggled with the top 10 teams (last year), but we knew in this division we could do some damage. I told them we are going to win state and it is ours to lose.” The Sentinels haven’t done much of that this year even when they played in the Chandler Howl tournament as they won the Silver Division against some of the top Division I teams. “Winning the Chandler Howl (in early March) really opened our eyes,” senior captain Noah Williams said. “We knew we could be good. It just really showed us that we had a chance to be great.” How far Seton Catholic, or any other state qualifying team for that matter, will come down to game-changing moments that go a long way in determining the outcome. “We’ve done all we could to get to this point,” Price said. “I trust my guys, just as they have all season long, will come through in the big moments. We have a target on our backs, but so do a lot of teams. “I know my guys will be fine in the moment and hopefully we get enough of those moments to go our way.” • Contact Jason Skoda at 480-898-7915 or jskoda@ awhwatukee.com.
