Mom, so much has happened

ear mom, It’s hard to believe you’ve been dead since 2003; that’s 18 years now. I think you would have loved your memorial. We held it at the Stave Kirke in Rapid City, South Dakota. Honoring your love of needlework, we hung the Norwegian bunad you meticulously made by hand. Like the tradition of the riderless horse, we had the womanless dress. I don’t even know where to start to catch you up on everything. You always told me time gets faster as we age, and I now see you were right. Let’s see… I am mortified that I can’t remember the year Ann died, although I’ll never forget that it was on June 9. You’d think that the year my only niece — your only grandchild — died would be emblazoned on my brain. It hurt so much, I can still barely think about it. Alane couldn’t ever talk about it with me. I told her once that she could say anything she needed to about Ann. Alane turned icy cold and said, “No. I don’t like to process like you do.” It was more important to let her know I was open to hearing about one of the more contentious mother/ daughter relationships I had ever experienced. They were often both too generous with their mean streaks. Alane did tell me once that she believed her pregnancy with Ann, being unplanned and unwanted, was possibly the cause of Ann’s cancer. Imagine my sister carrying that burden around: the guilt, the self-recrimination. I’m so grateful that you and I had the heart-to-heart talk about “unwanted” that we did. When I asked if you had wanted me, I was sure you’d be honest. And you were, when you told me “no.” I’d be a hypocrite if I asked and then got angry for hearing the truth. And I would not be a good daughter and feminist activist for reproductive choice if I resented you for feeling that you had no choice. We got closer after that talk, and for that, I’m forever thankful. Now for the latest family news: Alane herself died last year on July 27 of a rare blood disorder. Remember cousin Torvald in Bergen? He suffers from “Viking disease,” which is a form of overly iron-rich blood. I’m curious if I have any propensity toward it. Anyway, Alane soldiered through a lot of the indignities of aging and would not stop. I was incredibly proud of her for taking what she knew would be the last trip to visit her beloved grandson, Nico, and his new wife, Randi. Mikey was able to come, too, and I came up for a few days. It was as close to a

family reunion that we had gotten in years. Alane proved to be a doting grandmother, and both boys and Randi adored her. A significant part of my life is that I got married for the third time in 2008. Yep, the third time appears to be the charm, although I’m proudly still good friends with both my ex-husbands. I married Ken Gruberman in the first Buddhist wedding I’d ever attended — my own! We love each other, but even better, we enjoy each other’s company. We both work from home, and if you had told me I’d be working and living around the clock with a spouse, I’d say you were nuts. That could only end in a murder, and I’d be in prison for life. As it turns out, we love being together. That particular relationship asset has paid off, since we’ve been in a quarantine situation for more than a year thanks to a global pandemic. I regret not asking you more questions. I also regret the questions you never asked me. I suspect you may have been a tad leery of hearing my answers, given my wildness in comparison to the nice, quiet Norwegian girl I never turned out to be. I am forever grateful to you for so many things. You never gave me a discouraging word even when my plans and dreams were so outrageous that you were no doubt stunned when you heard them. I am particularly indebted to you for turning me on to Eleanor Roosevelt, who was living proof that a woman could write a column. I don’t know if there’s an afterlife or not. If there is, I wonder if you’ve been keeping track of me. If so, I hope I make you proud. Love, Ellen P.S. I wrote a one-woman show about you and have performed it all over the world. It’s called “Now That She’s Gone: Unraveling the Mystery of My Mother.” I think I finally figured you out after you passed away. • Ellen Snortland and the Rev. PUSD statement on budget outlook

I

By Board of Education President Scott Phelps and Superintendent Brian McDonald, Ed.D.

n what has been one of the most challenging years for our country, the teachers, staff and administrators of Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) demonstrated their unflagging commitment to our students and their families. As the COVID-19 pandemic diminishes, we are planning and budgeting for the 2021-2022 school year with the expectation that PUSD will fully reopen our schools for in-person learning. As we move forward with our budgeting for the future, our goals are twofold: to develop our budget strategically to meet the needs of our students and to make the budget development process transparent and accessible to our constituents. To make PUSD more competitive with other districts when it comes to salaries and benefits, we are committed to improving employee compensation so that we can retain and recruit the remarkable and innovative educators and employees that make such a difference in our students’ lives. We know that accomplishing this will take some strategic prioritizing — and hard choices in the near future. Like many districts around us, PUSD cannot increase salaries in the 2020-2021 school year. However, with the state proposing to provide the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for schools in 2021-2022, PUSD has offered our labor partners a onetime bonus for employees in the current year, which can then be placed on the salary schedule as an ongoing raise once the state COLA is funded in the 2021-2022 school year that begins on July 1. Every year, PUSD creates a budget based on how much money we expect the district to receive in state and federal funding. We track revenue and expenses to ensure the district maintains a balanced budget. Nearly 85% of PUSD’s budget is invested in teachers, administrators, and classified staff who work hard to provide excellent educational opportunities for our students. Our largest cost increases every year come from built-in salary increases (which occur with added years of service and completion of increased education and professional development), mandatory rising district contributions to state pensions, and rising health care costs for employees. PUSD maintains a general fund reserve, much like a

savings account, in case we need to dip into it to cover unexpected costs in textbooks, materials, and facilities. The state requires school districts to maintain a minimum amount in the reserve fund. To keep up with inflation and these increasing costs, PUSD needs a revenue increase of at least 5% every year if our enrollment remains stable. Therefore, in most years, the state of California provides an increase in ongoing revenue called the COLA. This leads to improved compensation for our hardworking employees (although with enrollment declines, we would need additional funds or budget reductions to cover the loss of revenue associated with losing students). However, last June, because of the pandemic’s effect on the economy and tax revenues, the state of California did not provide a COLA to school districts for the 2020-2021 school year. The COLA was zeroed out for 2020-2021. PUSD has received state and federal COVID-19 relief funds to help mitigate the substantial costs of transitioning to remote learning and making classrooms safe for students and staff to return to campus. These one-time funds are restricted, which means that they must be spent on extending learning time, mental health services and supports, and facilities upgrades such as hospital-grade air purifiers and air conditioner filter upgrades as well as inspection and repair of all air conditioning units. Funds must be spent by Sept. 30, 2024, at the latest. As one-time funds, these dollars cannot be used for salary increases since salary raises are ongoing and must have an ongoing source of funds. We are moving forward with a strategic budgeting approach that commits and allocates our resources to meet our district’s goals, examines the results of programs and initiatives we have invested in, and makes adjustments to optimize our students’ educational experiences. During the pandemic, PUSD teachers, administrators, and classified employees never stopped working to make our schools better and safer for our students. They had to master new technologies and adjust to ever-changing conditions. We are profoundly grateful for their hard work for the students and families of our district..

uilding bridges, breaking bread and spreading peace. Those are the goals of Heavenly Hughes and Victor Hodgeson of My Tribe Rise. “We understand that the ministry of breaking bread is a way of connecting with one another,” Hughes said. “Breaking bread brings a sense of peace and connection, even with tribe members.” Hughes and Hodgeson created their grassroots activism organization, My Tribe Rise, in 2019 with the broad goal of creating peace in their neighborhood, targeting the warring gangs, the Bloods and the Cripps. Instead of using the term “gang members,” the couple prefers to use the term “tribe members.” “If you identify someone as a gang member that automatically puts a stigma on the individual — a very bad, negative stigma,” said Hodgeson. “If you look up ‘tribe’ in the dictionary, it’s a group of individuals that have similar interests. We want to replace the name ‘gang member’ and call them a ‘tribe member’ because tribe members have changed and they are doing more positive things.” Their experiences with the gangs in Altadena prepared them to be advocates for peace in their neighborhood and the Greater Los Angeles area. “The thing that stood out to me was their genuine love for that group of people,” said Minister Tony Muhammed from the Nation of Islam and a gang-intervention activist. “You have to have an extraordinary amount of love of gang members who have gone wrong and want to be criminals.” In the lifestyle At the age of 10, searching for a place to belong, Hodgeson joined the Altadena Blocc Cripps. “It was a like a complete freedom by joining them,” said Hodgeson. “It’s like a fraternity [or] a brotherhood. We don’t look at each other as gang members. We look at each other as a family.” While Hodgeson felt free as a member of Altadena Blocc Cripps, his entire family, especially his mother, grew more and more stressed the longer he was in the gang. “It puts stress on the whole entire family,” said Hodgeson. “A mother will always be worried about their child being in that lifestyle. It put a lot of stress on her worrying about me.” In 1986, the life of being a gang member caught up with Hodgeson when he was found guilty of possession of a firearm. As a teenager, he was sent to California Youth Authority for three years. The survival-of-the-fittest type environment forced him to reconsider his lifestyle. “It taught me to respect the next man,” said Hodgeson. “It also made me want to do something different in life. Sitting in jail, you have a lot of time to think. One of the things I thought of is there has to be a better way to live. This cannot be it.” While in CYA, Hodgeson began to turn his life around, earning his GED. After CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

There are 11,224 total cases in the city with 346 total deaths, according to public health records. During the past week, there was an average daily infection rate of 2.6 in Pasadena. Los Angeles County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer stated the county is on track to move into the yellow tier. If the county continues to meet the required criteria when new figures are released, an official order loosening restrictions on businesses will be issued May 5, which will take effect on May 6. The yellow tier is the least restrictive; the tier allows larger capacity for most businesses, gatherings and indoors and outdoors events. • Los Angeles County is working to revise

its health order to include the changes in mask-wearing guidelines for fully vaccinated people as suggested by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new order states that surveillance COVID-19 testing is no longer recommended for people who are fully vaccinated. The only exception being individuals at skilled nursing facilities or at other high-risk settings. The county is also looking to allow water parks to reopen during the summer. There are 1,233,772 total COVID-19 cases with 23,915 deaths in the county. There are 420 people hospitalized with 98 in the intensive care unit. Los Angeles County accounts for 34% of California COVID-19 cases and 40% of deaths. • Pasadena public schools recently welcomed back third to 12th graders to city campuses. The city is pushing for more young people to get vaccine doses. The city worked with the Pasadena Unified School District and Huntington Hospital to recently open a vaccination clinic at a park to cater to high school students. While 75% of people who live and work in Pasadena have received at least one dose of the vaccine, only 1,233 16- to 17-year-olds have gotten at least one shot. The city has a lot of catching up to do on the younger demographic for vaccine administration. Information compiled by staff writer Doyoon Kim.

he was released, he left the gang and pursued other careers. In 2014, he received his associate’s degree from the University of Phoenix. ‘I don’t feel protected’ As a teenager in the early 1990s, after a string of robberies at the Altadena Supermarket, Hughes lobbied the owners to hire more Black employees. “Having a black face, having someone that people can relate to and identify with brings more comfort and respect,” she said. “They did hire me at 15 years old. I recall being able to even use the skills of understanding to deescalate when it came to someone coming to steal items in the store.” Many of the people entering the store were part of the Altadena Blocc Cripps, who lived right across the street. Hughes recalls that she was able to limit the “negative interactions” at the store just by talking to them. She soon gained the respect of the Cripps to the point where they protected her during a time of an uptick of gang violence. “It was pretty scary, and I remember my parents were very scared for us to even be outside during that time,” she said. “But it came a time when it kind of switched where I was being protected by gang members...I felt like I knew how to connect and communicate with them.” However, the feeling of protection soon faded, and the fear of violence rose after her brother joined the rival gang Pasadena Denver Lane, a set of Bloods. “I began to feel like our family was a target because we’re right here in Altadena where it’s all Cripps living in the area and my brother made the choice to become a blood,” said Hughes. “I was definitely nervous for my brother. There were times when he would be approached in stores with my parents and even my dad was so fearful of some type of violence coming into our household.” She felt that she had a target on her back. “Although he told us that we’re protected, I always told him ‘I don’t feel protected,’” said Hughes. “I feel like we’re a target now.”

A tribe of activism With their experiences with gangs, the two decided to end the circle of violence in Altadena by hosting get-togethers and showing rival gangs that they could coexist peacefully. “I already came from that culture,” said Hodgeson. “It was easy to connect with them but now we want to steer them in a more positive direction.” “Tribe members are people just like the rest of us,” Hughes added. “We all need some molding, leadership and mentoring to be able to see the light or be able to walk down a path that’s productive and positive for ourselves and for those around us.” My Tribe Rise has expanded its purview to bringing peace in their community whether it’s gang violence, police brutality or homelessness. “Our mission specifically is to bring peace into our community,” said Hughes. “Law enforcement is part of the community. Tribes are a part of the community. Clergy and residents are all part of the community.” My Tribe Rise will host its monthly Brothers Connecting with Brothers retreat at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8. Those interested can contact My Tribe Rise to reserve a spot. The website is mytriberise.com. 6 PASADENA WEEKLY | 05.06.21

ssential workers had two choices during the pandemic: stay at home and not get paid or expose themselves to COVID-19 to make ends meet. “If they stay home, then they wouldn’t be able to eat, pay rent, buy medicine, etc.,” said Pablo Alvardo, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. “The only choice they had was to go out to work.” Without essential workers, the grocery stores wouldn’t be stocked, the lights wouldn’t have stayed on and our packages wouldn’t be delivered. Because of their constant contact with others, many essential workers had a higher chance of death after contracting COVID-19. According to a study by researchers at UCSF, food and agriculture workers faced the highest increase in mortality at 39%, compared to 22% for working-age adults. “Our organization lost at least 500 members across the country,” Alvarado said. “For many people, it’s just numbers, but for us, they’re our friends, brothers, sisters [and] spouses. Recently, on Workers Memorial Day, the network staked 600 crosses in Villa Parke to honor the nearly 600,000 people, including essential workers, who died during the pandemic. Each of the crosses bore a name of an essential worker who died during the pandemic. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

“We should all come together to honor their legacy and what they did for all of us,” Alvarado said. Gordofredo Rivera, 69 Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, Gordofredo Rivera’s father repaired musical instruments. At age 10, he learned how to play the many instruments that surrounded him. “He played 12 instruments to perfection,” said Alvarado, who was in the band, Los Jornaleros del Norte, with Rivera. The name translates to the Day Laborers of the North. “He’s been a member of the band for about 15 years. He was the only one who knew how to read and write music.” Rivera came to America after losing his job in 1994. He worked as a day laborer before he was hired at a dry cleaner, working in the back cleaning clothes. “He worked Monday through Saturday,” said Rivera’s grandson, Irving Garcia. “He would wake up at 4 a.m. [and] get home at 6 [or] 7 p.m. [He’d work] in extreme heat all the time. Sometimes he’d come back with burns on his hands.” Without his father in his life, Garcia turned to his grandfather for a father figure. “He was the world to me,” said Garcia. “He was my inspiration. He was my father figure.” When the pandemic arrived in the United States, Rivera didn’t have the luxury of working from home and returned to the dry cleaners. Like the many people stocking grocery shelves or picking crops in the fields, Rivera had to choose between his health or livelihood. With a grandson going to college, Rivera continued to work. “I wouldn’t be going to college without, he paid for a lot of things,” said Garcia. During the winter surge in January, Rivera and his family contracted COVID-19. At first, the family didn’t realize they contracted with the novel coronavirus. They thought it was food poisoning. When Rivera’s breathing shallowed and his oxygen saturation level dropped to 59%, the family realized it was far worse than food poisoning. Rivera spent three weeks in the ICU before dying. “It hurts knowing that it wasn’t supposed to happen. It could’ve been avoided,” said Garcia as he held tears back. “It didn’t have to happen. I’m heartbroken. It hurts.” Antonio Bernabe, 60 By all accounts, Antonio “Tony” Bernabe was one of the kindest people. “He’s truly one of the kindest people that I’ve ever known,” said the network’s general counsel, Chris Newman. “Among the thousands of people that he worked with you will never find someone who would speak a bad word about Tony.” As a former day laborer, Bernabe fought for immigrant rights for more than two decades. As the director of organizing for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, he created and worked with the network. “He was always ready to help others,” said national project coordinator Loyda Alvarado. “As an immigrant himself, I feel that he understood the struggles of our undocumented brothers and sisters. It’s a shame that he died without getting his documents.” After immigrating from Guanajuato, Mexico, in 1990, Bernabe soon learned of the struggles many day laborers experienced. He began to advocate for his fellow workers by joining the coalition where he met Alvarado. “He helped workers collect unpaid wages. He helped families prevent deportations,” said Alvarado. “There wasn’t anything he could not fix, [whether it] was conflicts between workers, conflicts with employers [or] conflicts with police officers, the man could do everything.” After a long battle with COVID-19, Bernabe died on Jan. 20. “He really was one of a kind,” Newman said. “You don’t meet people like Tony very often in life.” Survivor’s guilt After contracting COVID-19 in the winter, Alvarado thought he was going to die. His entire brain was swollen, he could barely breathe, let alone sleep. Against all odds, he survived. While his brain was still swollen, he was grateful he was alive. “I’m grateful that I made it,” said Alvarado. “Every day, I feel the pain that comes back. It always comes back… I get these headaches every day, they are subsiding little by little, but every day is a reminder that I made it.” After months of recovery, he still couldn’t shake the feeling of guilt that he survived, while so many others, including his dear friends, Rivera and Bernabe, didn’t. “There is not a day I don’t think of them,” Alvarado said as he cried on a park bench within earshot of the crosses of Rivera and Bernabe. “Sometimes I ask, why them? [Why] am I a survivor? There is not a day that I don’t remember Tony and Don Gordofredo.”

Rose Bowl Institute awards inaugural ROSI award By Pasadena Weekly Staff

T

he Rose Bowl Institute awarded its first Rose Bowl Sportsmanship Initiative (ROSI) award, at the annual Turkey Tussle, a match-up against local Pasadena cross town rival football teams, John Muir and Pasadena high schools. The first recipient was Ahmad Jolley, from Pasadena High School, for displaying outstanding sportsmanship during the game on April 16. Jolley was selected for the award for exemplifying what it means to be a good sport and what it means to enjoy the game with a respect for others. The award is the first in the history of the institute, which launched in August 2020 and has grown to reach thousands with its programming on a local, national and international scale. “For 73 years, we recognize that student athletes from John Muir and Pasadena high schools have left it all on the field physically and emotionally at the annual Turkey Tussle, inside the Rose Bowl Stadium,” said Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo. “Thank you to the Rose Bowl Institute for starting a new tradition and recognizing the importance of sportsmanship.” As the Rose Bowl Institute looks to continue its programming and expand awards recognizing key sports values, it presented the inaugural certificate of merit in sportsmanship at the local rivalry game under the lights at America’s Stadium last month. The sportsmanship values recognized and encouraged within the award included appreciation for the game, commitment to the team, respect for others (particularly opponents and referees), playing by the rules, and personal integrity. Jolley exemplified these values from beginning to end of the game. “This was a great opportunity for the Rose Bowl Institute to apply our sportsmanship award to an important local sporting event at the Rose Bowl Stadium,” added Charlie Firestone, president of the Rose Bowl Institute A committee worked together prior to and during the game to review the student-athletes and to select which player would be awarded the certificate of merit. Committee members included Gordo, City Councilmember Tyron Hampton, City Councilmember Gene Masuda, Institute Advisory Board Member Dr. Jen Welter and Rose Bowl Stadium Staff Representative Brian Brantley. “We are very proud of the Rose Bowl Institute and presenting the inaugural sportsmanship award during one of Pasadena’s greatest high school football traditions is a special pairing,” said Darryl Dunn, CEO and general manager of the Rose Bowl Stadium. The Rose Bowl Institute’s mission is to “champion sportsmanship and leverage the power of sports to unite people everywhere.” Its three pillars — sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship — were reflected in the recipient of this award at the Turkey Tussle.

That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Treasurer for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of California Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver JFK’s are actually being handed over to California residents who call the National Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publica-

tion. “I recently spoke with a retired Treasurer of the United States of America who said, ‘In all my years as Treasurer I’ve only ever seen a handful of these rarely seen Silver JFK’s issued by the U.S. Gov’t over 50 years ago. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls still in pristine condition is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Cali-

fornia Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of California residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 6 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver clad JFK Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of California Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that these coins date back to the mid 1900’s and some are worth up to 60 times their face value, so there is no

telling what California residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of California you cover only the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s twenty rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver clad JFK half dollars worth up to 60 times their face value for just $380 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $57 per coin which totals $1,140 if any coins reR1031R-1

main after the 2-day deadline. The only thing California residents need to do is call the National Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver JFK Half Dollars have nearly doubled in collector value in just the last several years,” Lynne said. “So just imagine how much these last remaining, unsearched State of California Restricted Bank Rolls could be worth someday. Remember, these are not ordinary coins – these rarely seen coins are at least 50 years old. In fact, these coins have been forever retired by the U.S. Gov’t, and you can’t get them rolled this way anywhere because these are the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist,” said Lynne. “We’re guessing thousands of California residents will be taking the maximum limit of 6 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline

Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30 am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all,” Lynne said. “That’s why the National Mint and Treasury set up the National Toll-Free Hotlines in order to make sure California residents get the State Restricted Bank Rolls before they’re all gone,” she said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of California and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. ■

What you need to know about the last State Restricted JFK Silver Bank Rolls If you are a California State Resident call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am : 1-800-958-0006 EXT: RJN1045 Are these silver JFKs better than other JFKs: Yes. These Silver JFKs were minted over 50 years ago and they are among the first JFKs to be produced by the U.S. Gov’t. The vast majority of current JFKs have no silver content at all and these Silver clad JFKs have 5 of the top 8 collector values of any JFKs ever minted, so there is no telling how much their collector value could be someday. How much are State Restricted JFK Silver Bank Rolls worth: It’s impossible to say, but the collector value of many of these Silver clad JFKs has nearly doubled in the past few years and there are 20 in each Bank Roll. It’s important to remember that collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only California State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and JFK was a President beloved by people of all walks of life so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling what the actual collector value could one day be worth. Why are so many California residents claiming them: Because they are the only State Restricted JFK Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 20 Silver JFKs dating back to the mid 1900’s. Best of all California residents are guaranteed to get them for the State Minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $19 per Silver JFK for the next two days. How do I get the State Restricted JFK Silver Bank Rolls: California residents are claiming the limit of 6 State Restricted JFK Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800958-0006 Ext. RJN1045 starting at precisely 8:30 this morning. When they do they are getting the only State Restricted JFK Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 20 Silver JFKs from over 50 years ago with some of the highest collector values on record, but it’s essential that they call immediately. Non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,140 for each California State Restricted JFK Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

Eaton Canyon

Locals list the best hikes in Pasadena By Amanda Coscarelli

W

hen warm weather springs, there are two things Southern Californians do best: relax on the beach and embark on a hike. Though Pasadena isn’t known for its white sand or salty air, the city is home to a number of trails that draw in hikers from all over Los Angeles. And if the weather is right, a seagull just might be flying in to escape the marine layer. Besides the occasional beach bird, there are many reasons for hikers to venture to Pasadena’s trails. Former Arcadia resident Faith Hawthorne, 20, says, “I like to hike to explore nature. I’m motivated to get to the top of the mountain, take a picture of the sunrise or sunset, and say we did it. Hiking is not only a good sweat, but it also helps build long-lasting friendships.” Compiled by local hikers, this list includes the best of Pasadena and surrounding cities’ trails. 1. Eaton Canyon (easy) The Eaton Canyon trail, recommended by Altadena resident Vanessa Prata, 21, sits inside of Eaton Canyon Nature Center. This is a beginner’s-level trail, and it’s often busy with families, dog walkers and horse riders. Prata explains it’s a good trail for people of all ages and experience levels and a good starting point for anyone wanting to pick up hiking as a hobby. This is a shaded trail with various stopping points along the way and, often, encounters with wild animals. It’s a good idea to brush up on snake protocol in the museum and nature center before starting the hike. Prata also notes that, after it rains, enough water builds up at the falls for a quick, cold swim.

Mount Wilson Trail

2. Enchanted Forest via Sam Merill (easy) The Enchanted Forest trail is recommended by San Gabriel resident Michael Morales, 20. He discovered the hike by taking a wrong turn. This hike begins at the top of Lake Avenue in Altadena, past foreboding front gates. Upon entering the gates, hikers will travel on broken asphalt that once served as a driveway for the Cobb Estate. The fork is only a short walk ahead, and there’s a sign that points hikers toward Echo Mountain to the right. The other trail is to the left toward the estate. It’s another quick walk to the ruins of the old house, and many trailgoers stop there. However, Morales noted that several difficult trails are hidden beyond this point, but trail blazers will have to proceed at their own risk. 3. Hermit Falls (moderate) The Hermit Falls trail is part of the Chantry Flat recreation area in the mountains of Sierra Madre. Tucked in the Angeles National Forest, this trail has plenty of trees and provides lots of shade. Though it’s a moderate trail, it’s still popular among dog walkers and families. Past the parking lot and at the head of the trail, there’s a sign that points hikers in the direction of different trails. Hawthorne recommends Hermit Falls because of the oasis near the end. Though it’s not the easiest trail, it leads tired hikers to a waterfall and pond that doubles as a picture op and a cooldown before heading back. 4. First Water via Mount Wilson Trail (moderate) This trail is one of a few that branch off from the Mount Wilson trailhead in Sierra Madre. It is recommended by Sierra Madre resident Will Cosso, 21, for its historical significance to the region. He notes, “It’s beautiful, I can walk to it from my house, and it’s super historical.” According to Cosso, this was originally a Native American trail that was widened by the first mayor of Los Angeles, Benjamin Wilson, in 1864. In the late 1800s, the canyon and summit had “rustic resorts” for campers and hikers. Though the campgrounds are long gone, the trail’s accessibility makes it possible for history buffs and hikers alike to bask in its heritage. And if that isn’t enough to ponder on the trek, Cosso includes that at the top of the mountain, visible from the trail, is the Mount Wilson Observatory, where Edwin Hubble realized that the Milky Way galaxy is one of millions in an expanding universe. 5. Bailey Canyon Trail (hard) On the topic of Sierra Madre hikes, Cosso also recommends the Bailey Canyon Trail. In fact, it connects with part of the Mount Wilson Trail loop. This one is for the hardcore hikers who don’t mind getting on the ground to climb. It’s uphill through Bailey Canyon for the beginning of the trip and then across the ridge for the next leg. Hikers will need to scramble up to reach the Mount Wilson road, though after that there’s a section of downhill. As this is the longest hike on the list, at 11.1 miles, trailgoers should expect to take many breaks and should prepare with multiple bottles of water.

U Street Pizza: ‘Feel like a kid again’

t’s no wonder that pizza has emerged as perhaps the top comfort food during the year-long pandemic. COVID-19 proved nearly every type of cuisine can be packaged into takeout boxes and delivered, but pizza has maintained its place of prominence for providing simple pleasures. U Street Pizza opened April 14, and is the latest player on the now-crowded dining field of Union Street between Raymond Avenue and Fair Oaks. The strip is lined with good options — from Chakra’s South Indian dosas to the sophisticated provincial French cuisine of Perle or the custom spring rolls at Paper Rice to the bacon-wrapped hot dogs at Dirt Dog. Now add pizza — and not just any pizza. It’s no coincidence that U Street Pizza resides next door to Union restaurant, a tiny mecca of Northern Italian cuisine and one of Pasadena’s first chef-driven avanthaute cuisine destinations. The inspiration for U Street Pizza was not driven by the pandemic pizza pandemonium. Union’s purveyor, Marie Petulla, and her chef, Chris Keyser, had been plotting their pizza campaign well before the lockdown. “I feel Chris understands Union in a way that I never imagined could happen,” Petulla said. In fact, Petulla signed the lease on the space next door — previously occupied by the champagne and dessert bar Pop!—in November 2019. “We had been talking about (opening the pizzeria) for a long time now,” Keyser said. “We have a love for pizza. What is pizza to us? The more we talked about it, the more we realized we had the same idea of what pizza should be, what is comforting to us, what we grew up with.” Petulla was born in Chicago and grew up in Wausau, Wisconsin. “I grew up with my dad making pizza,” Petulla said. “It was just a part of family life. Any day he made bread, he’d make pizza.” Chicago is known for its regional taste in pizza. “When people say ‘Chicago-style’ pizza, they think of stuffed pizza,” Petulla said. “We know it’s not the only style of pizza in Chicago. (Here) its’s our own take on New York style. What we’re doing is very unique and very special.” Keyser added, “We talked about developing a restaurant that would be New York-style pizza that would have an Italian-American flair. It would be fun and simple but doing it the same way we do it at Union. Keeping it fresh, keeping it local. Also, it would be a great addition to the neighborhood.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

The lockdown spurred a series of delays in opening the shop, but it also allowed Keyser time to further perfect his canny renditions of New York-style pizza. Some people consider New York-style pizza as thin, floppy slices painted lightly with bland tomato sauce, topped with molten shreds of generic mozzarella and sold — in the old days — at $1 a slice. For Keyser, the challenge became, “How do we elevate what everyone thinks is the (New York) dollar slice?” “(The crust) should be thinner, it should be crispy,” Keyser said. “It should have a crack to it, when you slice into it. It also should have a pull to it, when you eat it. New York-style is a little bit chewier. It’s a little tougher.” He researched flour mills on the West Coast, landing on Cairnspring Mills in Burlington, Washington. “It’s arguably the best mill in the country,” Keyser said. “They mill a variety of wheats. We’ve tested them all. What makes them so special is not just the flavor of the wheat but the digestibility of it as well.” Keyser decided on two flours from the mill: Glacier Peak and Organic Skagit. “We do a blend with those two,” Keyser said. “The Glacier Peak has the color and the flavor of really good bread. It chars very well. The Skagit is a lower-protein flour that makes (the crust) crispier but much lighter as well. You still get that great texture. You get a good balance of chew, lightness and bread. It starts with the wheat and you go from there.” At U Street Pizza, the dough is fermented for two days, before being shaped and baked. Keyser uses a state-of-the-art Pizza Master electric triple-deck oven with four stones per deck. Unlike Napolitano-style pies, which barely get a turn in a very hot wood-burning oven — typically calibrated between 700 and 800 degrees — Keyser’s pizzas sit for 8 to 10 minutes at 550 degrees. “Pizza is all about dialing in the dough, the oven and the shaping,” Keyser said. No $1 slices here. At U Street Pizza, the pies are all 14-inch diameter, the crust has body and bite, and the fresh topping combinations are engineered to maximize tastiness and satisfaction. On the menu, there are eight varieties of house pies, starting with a simple cheese pie ($19) with red sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil. More exotic combinations include the vodka pepperoni ($25) with vodka sauce, ezzo pepperoni, provolone and mozzarella; the Petaluma ($25) with organic Petaluma mozzarella, “grandma sauce” and pecorino romano; and the clam ($26) — really a take on New Haven-style —with little neck clams, fiscalini cheddar, mozzarella, fresh garlic, parsley and lemon. Custom pies are the white pie ($20) and red pie ($17) onto which additional ingredients may be added. There are three salads, including a Caesar ($16) and a chopped ($17). Featured starters are crispy cauliflower ($16) and Japanese eggplant ($14). Don’t skip dessert. U Street Pizza also boasts artisanal soft-serve ice cream ($5). For Keyser, it’s an important part of the experience. “Pizzerias, for me, always had soft-serve, growing up,” Keyser said. “I wanted to take that concept but elevate it, just like we do over at Union. We decided to have our own soft-serve program but instead of buying it or purchasing flavors, we wanted to take the (seasonal) fruit at the market and turn that into soft-serve. It took me about a year to really perfect it. I worked really hard on it and I’m really proud of it. We’re going to have some really fun flavors.” Within the next month or so, the pizzeria’s liquor license should be secured and a full bar menu will be offered as well. Looking to the summer, lunch service is likely to start, as the elegant outdoor dining area allotted for Union is engaged for the pizzeria as well. “It’s been great,” Petulla said. “More people create new introductions to the restaurant. It’s more foot traffic. It’s more excitement. It’s everything you want in an area. (The city of) Pasadena has really worked with us. In my opinion they’ve made it very easy to transition to these opportunities that they’ve made available. I think the community loves it. The city of Pasadena will listen and will continue with the al fresco dining, hopefully for a very long time.” Keyser has one simple suggestion for the community, “Come in and eat pizza. Feel like a kid again.”

• ARTS & CULTURE • PBS doc traces Chinese American link to Mississippi Delta By Jana J. Monji Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

P

Larissa Lam recently directed “Far East Deep South,” a documentary on PBS. relic of the past. Pre-pandemic lockdown, Baldwin and Lam were at a Pasadena bowling alley, and, Lam related, “Someone made a racist comment to us when we were walking out, for no reason. Totally unprovoked.” Their daughter was with them. “I don’t think she understood why he was saying it, so I turned around and looked at them and educator-like, asked ‘Excuse me, what did you say?’” Baldwin said. “He basically made a comment about how we would not understand what they were talking about anyway, because we wouldn’t be able to understand.” Instead of getting into a shouting match, Baldwin said, “I gave him a little history lesson of our family and how long we’ve been in this country.” Personally, Lam and Baldwin know someone who was spat on (New York) and another who was chased down by a motorcycle (Pasadena). The anti-Asian racism seems to cast Asian Americans as forever foreigners. “I would like for people to think of Asian American history as just an American history,” Baldwin said. “I think it’s important to have Asian American history, but for it to be segregated by itself, sometimes it still seems like we’re not a part of (American) history and we really are. This film really shows how we are.” Learning history, including personal histories like that of his family is important. “We’ve heard people say, ‘Chinese people or Asian people don’t really understand discrimination.’ We’ve been discriminated against for a long time.” “Far East Deep South” touchingly ties together China, San Francisco and the Jim Crow South. It helps one reconsider both the human landscape of the Mississippi Delta and race relations in the United States. Pasadena Emmy Award-winning Nathan Wang composed the music. “Far East Deep South” will be available to stream on worldchannel.org, pbs.org and the PBS Video app throughout May for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

asadena residents Larissa Lam, Baldwin Chiu and his father, Charles Chiu, traveled from California to Mississippi, to find the grave of Charles’ father, K.C. Lou. By chatting with locals and historian, the Chinese American family discovered the family’s important role in the Mississippi Delta. They also learned about the symbiotic relationship between the Black and Chinese communities during the Jim Crow era. They share their story through the documentary “Far East Deep South,” which is available on PBS SoCal World Channel. Directed by Lam and produced by Chiu, the 76-minute “Far East Deep South” is part of the documentary series “American ReFramed.” Check local listings. Also known as hip-hop artist Only Won, Baldwin Chiu was born in San Francisco, graduated from Cal State Sacramento and is also a licensed mechanical engineer. His 2010 LP was aptly titled “The Lyrical Engineer.” Lam is an entertainer in her own right. She is an award-winning singer and songwriter who has released four critically acclaimed solo albums, including her most recent, “Love and Discovery.” Her song, “I Feel Alive” won the Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Dance Song and was the theme song for a national suicide prevention campaign. Lam began her career as the chief financial officer of NSOUL Records and has written and produced music for TV (“The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Dr. Oz,” E!, TLC), film (“Zulu”, “Gone”) and video games (Konami, Square Enix). Asking them how they met yields a “he-said, she-said” story. “She stalked me,” Baldwin said in a recent Zoom interview. “It was not true,” Lam insisted. “We both have a background in music and were working as music artists and I just checked out his website (MySpace).” Lam sent an email. “But it was completely professional.” A UCLA grad, Lam grew up in Diamond Bar. Lam and Baldwin had a NorCal-SoCal long-distance relationship before tying the knot and moving to Pasadena over a decade ago. Under normal circumstances, Lam and Baldwin hopped from film festival to film festival. However, because of COVID-19, most festivals went virtual. Baldwin noted a pandemic silver lining. “It made it easier for some schools to actually license our film and to watch the film at home,” Baldwin said. “The students then meet for discussion.” That’s an important step because Lam and Baldwin had AP history, but neither recalls learning anything about Asians in America and their contributions. That’s disturbing considering the impact of the Chinese in California and the virulent racism that resulted in Los Angeles Chinese Massacre in 1871 and violent mobs trying to drive the Chinese out of Pasadena in 1885. Lam recalled learning about the Gold Rush and the Transcontinental railroad, “and I think that was relegated to two sentences in the textbook.” The Japanese incarceration during World War II was given one paragraph, she said. Nothing was mentioned about the influx of Chinese to the Mississippi Delta. “Our history doesn’t reflect the vast geography that Asians have covered, or are still located in,” Lam said. Looming large in the documentary is the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which directly impacted Chiu’s family. Chiu’s grandfather served a predominately Black clientele and the documentary visits with Chinese American families who remained and some Black families who remember the store. Their stories of friendship and alliances contrast the Asian-Black conflicts of the Los Angeles Riots in 1992. With the rise of anti-Asian incidents in the United States, Lam and Baldwin said they feel their documentary is even more important. They know that anti-Asian hate is not a

Dustbowl Revival’s music has evolved since it was founded.

Dustbowl Revival streams two concerts from Hot Shot Muffler By Bliss Bowen Pasadena Weekly Contributing Writer

E

ven after all pandemic restrictions have been lifted and live concerts and tours resume, the livestreams and virtual performances that served as a lifeline between artists and audiences over the past year will remain a vital aspect of working musicians’ lives. And quite a few are scheduled for the coming weeks, including two shows by Dustbowl Revival (dustbowlrevival.com) streaming from Hot Shot Muffler in Highland Park on successive Thursdays, May 6 and 13. Each of the shows, which bandleader Zach Lupetin is promoting as a “double virtual concert experience,” will have a specific focus. On May 6, Dustbowl Revival will perform its 2020 album “Is It You, Is It Me” in its entirety; the May 13 performance is billed as “Dustbowl Revived: Favorite Songs & Stories” (a mix of fan favorites, new material and possibly one or two cover tunes). Dustbowl Revival’s sound has evolved considerably since the band leaped into the vanguard of LA’s string-band renaissance 13 years ago, back when they could be seen playing Westside dive bars and Eastside concerts at the Coffee Gallery Backstage and Levitt Pavilion. Lupetin, who migrated from Chicago to Los Angeles in part to launch a “roots orchestra,” has not deviated from American roots music; rather, Dustbowl draws from a broader range of sources that includes not just bluegrass, old-time folk and gospel but also early 20th century jazz, blues and spirit-lifting New Orleans grooves. As the music has broadened and elevated its songwriting focus, the elastic lineup has tightened from a freewheeling 13 members to a horn-swinging octet and now, depending on the occasion, a sextet or septet. The band’s also developed a reputation for delivering knockout performances onstage and a fan base that includes Keb’ Mo’ and Dick Van Dyke. In recent weeks dynamo vocalist Liz Beebe (lizbeebe.com) announced on social media her “emotional and difficult” decision to leave after eight years, citing the time and energy demanded by touring life. The creative chemistry between Beebe and Lupetin helped shape 2017’s “Dustbowl Revival,” the most cohesive album of the band’s career, as well as “Is It You, Is It Me,” which weaves Laurel Canyon-style harmonies into Dustbowl’s sonic tapestry. At the upcoming concerts, Lashon Halley will be joining Lupetin at the mic. She’s an inspired choice. When Halley steps forward for a slinky performance of one of the funkier songs from “Is It You, Is It Me,” “Ghost” (youtube.com/watch?v=8o6kuP-C87Y), she imprints the song with her formidable vocals and attitude. It’s one more instance of how Dustbowl Revival thrives on change.

Punchy funk jams and hopeful messages from bandleader Ivan Neville and his New Orleans crew. “Justice 2020” is a hardcharging reprise of their 2017 single that swaps out Trombone Shorty’s horn for Chali 2na’s righteous rap, while the title track, “Do You” and “Let’s Get at It” note towering challenges of the day with clear sight and conviction rooted in history and irresistible grooves. Infectious opener “United Nation Stomp” sets the tone: “Everybody clap your hands/ Everybody stomp your feet/ Everybody move around/ Everybody sing with me.” dumpastapunk.com

MAIA SHARP, “Mercy Rising” (Crooked Crown): HHH½

The former Angeleno’s first album since 2015’s “Dash Between the Dates” transcends specific events yet speaks to this general moment of healing and starting over. Textured with subtle grooves and atmospheric guitar lines, standouts such as “You’ll Know Who Knows You,” the brooding title track and “Whatever We Are” offer studies in contrast between Sharp’s smoky vocals and smart, polished melodies. Sharp’s songs have been recorded by Dixie Chicks and Bonnie Raitt, among numerous others; it will be no surprise if other artists also fatten their repertoires with “Things to Fix” and “When the World Doesn’t End” (“4-3-2-1/ And no Armageddon/ There’s still a moon, still a sun/ And we’re still breathin’”). maiasharp.com

WEST OF TEXAS, “Heartache, Hangovers & Honky Tonks” (Pleasant Valley Ranch): HHH

Frontman Jerry Zinn, producer Rich McCulley and a cadre of veteran Southland roots musicians capture the upbeat swing and sparkle of Bakersfield country classics throughout this ingratiating set. It’s easy to imagine Zinn and the band playing these to a crowd of two-steppers, and their performances and the cheery retro appeal combine to make this a heart-lifting reminder that live shows are on the near horizon. Highlights: the hooky “Foolin’,” “12 Steps to Drinkin’” (co-written by Zinn and Grant Langston), “Dead End Job Blues.” westoftexas.com

MARIANNE FAITHFULL WITH WARREN ELLIS, She Walks in Beauty (BMG): HHHH

Faithfull’s magnificently weathered voice embodies rock ‘n’ roll survival, and there’s symmetry to her resurrection of romantic poets who sketched a libertine template seized by 20th century icons, such as the Rolling Stones. Her readings tap into the inherent musicality of Byron, Keats (a sublime “To Autumn”), Shelley, Tennyson and Wordsworth (a Celtic-tinged, elegiac “Surprised by Joy”), as Bad Seeds multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis complements her speech with ambient settings layered with natural sounds and contributions from Nick Cave, Brian Eno and cellist Vincent Ségal. But it’s Faithfull’s gritty inhabitation of the language that makes it move and sing. mariannefaithfull.org.uk
